OTTAWA, ON – APRIL 5: Andrew Hammond #30 of the Ottawa Senators makes a save against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Canadian Tire Centre on April 5, 2016 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Jana Chytilova/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images)

When the Senators acquired Mike Condon from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2017 fifth round pick on November 2, it was sold as a move that was necessary because the Senators’ goaltending situation was in a state of flux.

Not only did the Anderson family come forward and reveal that Nicholle Anderson was diagnosed with cancer, but Andrew Hammond suffered a lower-body injury shortly thereafter that necessitated a stint on IR.

Rather than roll the dice and rely on the uncertainty facing Craig Anderson’s availability or hope that a young goaltending combination of Chris Driedger or Matt O’Connor could stem the tide, the Senators sought NHL experience to help shelter their goaltending prospects and help keep their playoff aspirations alive.

Through his first two games, Mike Condon played well. He apparently played well enough to play Andrew Hammond off of the roster.

With a couple of teams looking at goaltending help, hearing OTT is testing the market on Andrew Hammond. We’ll see what evolves.

— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) November 14, 2016

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

It’s not really clear what kind of return the Senators are looking for, but given Hammond’s performance this season, maybe the Senators won’t be asking for much…

Given the fact Hammond’s name has surfaced on the trade market you have to think waivers are an option if he can’t be dealt. #Sens

— Bruce Garrioch (@SunGarrioch) November 15, 2016

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Or you know, maybe they’re asking for nothing at all.

On the surface, it’s hard to believe that the Senators would be so willing to make this kind of call at this juncture of the season given we’re talking about two goaltenders who have combined to play in four games: two by Condon and two for Hammond.

Sure, Hammond hasn’t been great, but his track record certainly looks better on paper than that of Condon. Even if we look past his historical 2014-15 season in which he riddled off a 20-1-2 record with a 1.79 GAA and a .941 save percentage, his numbers last year were better than anything Mike Condon’s thrown together over the course of a large sample size.

2015-16 GP Record GAA Sv% SO
Hammond 24 7-11-4 2.65 .914 1
Condon 55 21-25-6 2.71 .903 1

Rob Vollman’s quality start metric measures whether a goaltender gave his team a chance to win. In order to record a quality start, a starting goalie must either stop a greater percentage of shots than the league average save percentage or at least play as well as a replacement-level goalie when allowing two goals or fewer.

According to this metric which is available on Hockey-Reference.com, Hammond’s recorded a 61.9-percent quality start rate last season. Not only did he finish ahead of Craig Anderson’s 51.7-percent mark, he was miles ahead of Condon’s 47.1-percent rate.

Digging a little deeper using Corsica.Hockey’s data, I looked into the variety of five-on-five save percentages from the start of the 2015-16 season to now. Not surprisingly, Hammond comes out way ahead in five-on-five save percentage, five-on-five save percentage on high danger scoring chances and five-on-five medium danger scoring chances.

5v5 SV% HDSV% MDSV%
Hammond 93.62 85.38 94.54
Condon 91.63 80.67 88.98

Keep in mind, this is only looking at Hammond’s numbers after his ridiculous 2014-15 season. If you include that run, the disparity in the numbers only gets bigger.

So why are the Senators so quick to send Hammond packing if they have a choice between the two goaltenders?

It’s a great question.

I’d hate to think that this is another instance where the Senators are falling into a small sample size trap, but maybe there are legitimate reasons to consider seeing what could be fetched in return for Hammond.

If the organization believes that it needs help (and it does) and that Hammond can be used as a chip to address a need, then maybe it’s prudent to gauge the market and see what’s available if other organizations are suffering through goaltender injuries and inadequate performance.

Conversely, this could be an instance where the Senators flipped a fifth rounder for Condon and believe that they could fetch a higher pick for Hammond which could then be used to draft a prospect or flipped in a separate deal to help fill a need later on.

Or maybe this is simply an instance where the Senators believe that the performance drop isn’t sizable enough and they just want to dump Hammond’s salary so that the organization can save itself some money because they’re pressed up against their own internal budget.

By absorbing Condon’s $575,000 one-year contract on waivers and dumping Hammond’s $1.35-million salary – assuming the Senators don’t take on salary in return – the team could save itself $775,000 this season.

It’s not a ton of money, but if there’s a silver lining in this scenario, it’s that the decision to slash payroll could possibly create financial flexibility for the Senators to make another move at some point later this season.

The fear is that the Senators might very well be close to dumping the better goaltender not only because of a small sample size of games but because they are also looking to save some money. Given the cost cutting that has gone on elsewhere within the organization, it’s hard to shake this nagging feeling that money is what’s principally driving the Senators’ decision to explore the Hammond market.

Now maybe the Senators truly believe that Condon’s the better goalie relative to the cost involved, but for a team that lives on the margins, the Senators need to get moves like this one right. If Anderson is felled by injury or has to miss a number of games down the road as his wife receives treatment for cancer, there’s going to be substantial pressure on Condon to carry the load and win meaningful games.

If I had to put on the GM hat and make that call, I’d have a hard time backing Condon. Not only am I not confident in his ability to be the better goaltender going forward, he’s also an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season while Hammond has one more year at $1.5-million in real dollars left on his deal – meaning, that barring a Condon extension, the Senators will need to fill this void next offseason.

I don't like the scoresway site. Too much fancy html stuff. And you're right, I didn't find historical records.

This is a great off-season project. I won't be able to get to it until January, unfortunately.

The night-game and overtime information isn't available on cfbdatawarehouse. ESPN has that information, but not on the same page, and they have way too much fancy html and javascript on their source to be useful anyway. And ESPN only has records dating to 2002 anyways.

My friend mentioned that there are some command line tools like wget and curl that work with pure text websites. I have to look into this. And there is apparently this neat Python based web page parser called Beautiful Soup. I'll take a look once I am done moving and get settled in.

The head coach is laser focused on Michigan State.

Ohio State’s head coach took to the podium for the last time before the Buckeyes travel to East Lansing to take on one of their last two regular season challenges. Facing Michigan State has postseason implications, but the head coach has been hesitant to breach the topic with his team for weeks.

  • Meyer said he hasn’t yet talked about the College Football Playoff implications with his team, but acknowledged Ohio State moving up to No. 2 saying, “people respect our work and we move on".
  • Kicker Tyler Durbin made a 45-yard field goal in last week’s win -- the longest made kick since the 2014 season. Meyer was asked at what range they felt comfortable using Durbin, specifically at 50 yards, and while touting the kicker’s ability, Meyer noted it depends on the elements and wind.
  • “Toughness” was the biggest thing Meyer saw in Curtis Samuel during spring practice. The head coach joked that guys at skill positions aren’t always tough, but those that are, are the ones who succeed longterm.
  • On the development of running back Demario McCall, Meyer said the team is headed into a rough stretch of games, and having some depth in case people get hurt is a good thing.
  • Meyer admitted he was concerned heading into the season with the defensive line, but with the great coaching staff, they’ve stepped up. Though when asked when he felt comfortable with their skill level, Meyer quipped, “not yet”.

He’s a good athlete to admire.

“[Curtis] Samuel has emerged as Meyer's best hybrid receiver-running back since Harvin, and in the process, Samuel is inspiring kids in the New York projects to love football.”

- Jon Solomon, CBS Sports

Ohio State’s most exciting player is Curtis Samuel. A lack of touches just a few weeks ago struck an angry nerve in all Buckeye fans. Since then, the Buckeyes have strung together a pair of blowout wins, and are now back to looking like their early-season dominant form. But football is just a part of Curtis Samuel, the man. Samuel, who is from New York, has been an inspiration for those back in his hometown of Brooklyn. Danny Landberg, who coahed Samuel in high school said, "I always felt like he was 'the one' and kids from Brooklyn need their own Jackie Robinson, so to speak, to look up and see anything is possible.”

That’s a lot to ask of Samuel to live up to, but he’s having one heck of a year, and for a place like Brooklyn that doesn’t produce a lot of football talent, he’s a superstar. This happened in part because Landberg made sure he was seen. "Most kids from New York City don't get seen because they don't go anywhere," Landberg said. "We flipped the bill to go out there and meet them and let them know this was real." At first Meyer was skeptical, but we can all agree he’s worked out pretty well.

“Ohio State's three top outside receivers? They contributed five catches for 56 yards - and Urban Meyer loved how they played.”

- Doug Lesmerises, Northeast Ohio Media Group

Ohio State has scored 62 points in both of their past two games. While that is awesome for all of us who watch Ohio State football, the receivers haven’t gotten in on much of the scoring. In fact, according to Lesmerises, the Bucks top three receivers have contributed just five receptions for 56 yards. The best part of that? Urban Meyer is totally fine with it. Meyer said, "Their blocking two weeks in a row was outstanding." He added that the receivers had played their best games back-to-back. And hey, if the Buckeyes keep winning by 59 points, there probably won’t be too many complaints.

The receivers in question are Noah Brown, Parris Campbell, and Terry McLaurin. Curtis Samuel, Dontre Wilson, and K.J. Hill have been putting in work. Probably the greatest thing we’ve seen in the past two weeks in Samuel getting his hands on the ball, and making fans of opposing teams hold their breath. As long as Samuel keeps producing the way he is, coupled with the bruising runs of Mike Weber, the Ohio State offense is just fine. Especially with the cushion they’ve been letting the defense play with.

“It would have been a weird twist of karma had Urban Meyer and Ohio State lost Jamarco Jones.”

- Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

There’s always good recruiting stories, or at least interesting to hear ones regarding good players in college football. Jamarco Jones was one player that Urban Meyer wanted a lot. In 2014, Jones took a visit to Michigan State a few days before National Signing Day, and had Meyer pretty nervous. "I probably talked to his mom over the weekend 60 times, because she was all Buckeye," Meyer told Landis. "I had her on speed-dial nonstop until they gave the, 'Everything is OK.'"

And while Meyer would rather recruits not take other visits, he understands that it’s what is best for them, and what they need to do in deciding on their future. “There's really only one person that matters in this whole equation and that's the player,” Meyer said. “If he ultimately decided that was a better place, that would have been a hard pill to swallow, but so be it." Since being at Ohio State, Jones has been mentored by the likes of now Detroit Lion Taylor Decker, and Billy Price. So when it came to this season, his first as a starter, he was ready.

The Westerville South big man is officially a Buckeye.

The papers are in. Westerville South big man Kaleb Wesson is officially a Buckeye after signing his national letter of intent with Ohio State.

Proud to announce @Elite_Hooper99 as an official Buckeye signee! Will join us next season #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/GY4rxK1TIq

— OSU BASKETBALL (@OhioStateHoops) November 16, 2016

Following in the footsteps of not only his father Keith Wesson, who suited up for the Buckeyes in the 1980s, but also his older brother Andre, a current freshman on the Ohio State roster. The younger Wesson verbally committed to OSU during the summer of 2015 over programs such as Iowa, and Xavier.

The Buckeyes are starting to once again stockpile big man talent. Assuming no departures, Wesson will join upperclassmen Trevor Thompson, Dave Bell, Micah Potter, and Derek Funderburk on the Ohio State roster for the 2017-2018 season. While Thad Matta and crew might have more true post players than normal, Wesson should have no problem seeing the court early on during his career at OSU.

Wesson has been a force down low throughout his time with Westerville South. During his three seasons on the court he’s accounted for 723 points, 518 rebounds, 166 blocked shots, and 99 assists. Averaging 14 points and 9 rebounds a contest last year as a junior, Kaleb led the Wildcats to their first state championship title in program history.

Not only one of the top players in the state of Ohio, but the entire country, Wesson is considered the seventh best center and 78th overall rated prospect in the class of 2017, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Scouting Report

“A burly 6-foot-10 post committed to Ohio State, Wesson is the area's most dominant low-post player, helping lead Westerville South to its first-ever state championship in 2015-16. With soft touch, soft hands, and an ability to not only bang inside and score, but knock down shots from mid-range and three-point range, Wesson is a classic big man with skill.” - 270Hoops.com

The Buckeyes could blow the doors off the Spartans on Saturday.

In recent years, the Ohio State-Michigan State matchup has been one of prestige, the kind of game that plays in primetime on national television and evokes both pride and pain for fans of both teams. Braxton Miller, not Carlos Hyde, on fourth-and-short. J.T. Barrett’s coming-out party. Oh sweet Jesus why aren’t they feeding Zeke. You know, things of that nature.

But if you’ve followed college football even a little bit this season, you’re probably aware of a good many things. One of those things is that the Ohio State-Michigan State game this weekend will almost certainly be lopsided, and it will almost certainly not hinge upon the defensive performance of a single player. The Buckeyes are 9-1, with playoff hopes still burgeoning; the Spartans are 3-7, with losses to (among others) Wisconsin, Indiana, Northwestern, and Maryland. Ohio State beat all four of those teams already, including a 62-3 shellacking of Maryland that showed the full extent of the Buckeye Death Star’s power.

All of this is to say that this profile is not one of the man who is going to single-handedly clinch victory for Ohio State on Saturday. But it does offer us a look at one of the only marquee positional matchups we might see in East Lansing this weekend.

The stats

Name: Marshon Lattimore

Number: 2

Position: Cornerback

Year: Sophomore

Height: 6’0

Weight: 192 lbs.

Line: 26.5 tackles, 4 interceptions, 9 passes broken up

Marshon Lattimore has been one of the most consistently effective playmakers on Ohio State’s defense in 2016. He’s a fast, physical corner with excellent coverage skills and a nose for getting his hands on the ball. As my colleague Ian Hartitz has pointed out:

We often see questionable pass interference calls down the field because the cornerback never attempted to make a play on the ball. Fortunately for Ohio State, their entire secondary thinks any pass thrown in their general proximity is theirs, so refs have allowed them to be more physical at the point of the catch since they’re often going for the ball. Few in the country have done this better than Lattimore this season.

Given his physicality and his ability to break passes up with the best of them, Lattimore’s skill set is an invaluable one. That’s good news for the Buckeyes, because this weekend’s opponent features at least one pass-catcher who can make defenses pay for their mistakes.

Opposition research

It’s been an ugly season for Michigan State as a whole, but senior wide receiver R.J. Shelton hasn’t suffered much. He’s put together a tidy stat line, racking up five touchdowns on 47 catches, good for 710 yards overall. His catch rate is 67.1% (about one point better than Noah Brown’s); his success rate, meanwhile, is an even 50%. (Success is here defined as gaining 50% of needed yardage on 1st down, 70% on 2nd down, and 100% on 3rd and 4th downs.)

That’s a good numerical profile for a player who’s dealing with a program in chaos and a stable of injured and ineffective QBs who have rotated all season. Shelton’s been the offense’s most reliable contributor, a mover-of-chains who’s good for the occasional explosive downfield play. If recent history is any indicator, the Buckeyes might struggle to keep the ball out of his hands, especially on first-half drives.

One other name to know: tight end Josiah Price. Price has hauled in 30 of his 38 targets this season, scoring touchdowns on five of those plays. His success rate is also higher than Shelton’s (though his targets aren’t comparable, as Shelton’s seen 70). If you can bring yourself to relive the Penn State game or the Wisconsin game, you’ll recall that the Buckeyes struggled mightily to contain tight ends leaking out into the second level for solid yardage. Containing Price will fall more on the Buckeye linebackers and safeties than on Lattimore, but it’s a threat that bears watching.

What to watch for

It’s hard to find an awful lot of fault with the total body of work of Ohio State’s pass defense this season. One thing that does stand out is that the Buckeyes get measurably worse on 3rd downs: dropping from 6th and 2nd nationally on 1st and 2nd downs, respectively, to 25th on 3rd down. That lines up with one of the only other troubling statistics to be found on the Buckeyes’ résumé: their No. 105 national ranking in explosive pass plays allowed. Greg Schiano’s pass defense bends and bends and almost never breaks, but on the rare occasions that it does, it does so in the oh-my-god-the-dam-ruptured-and-the-whole-town-is-drowning kind of way.

Still, there’s obviously a lot to love about the Buckeye secondary, and Lattimore in particular. Look at how beautifully and precisely he gets up to defend what would’ve been another of those explosive downfield pass plays against Penn State here:

Like we’ve said, Lattimore’s ball skills are great; if he ends up without safety help over the top against Shelton (or No. 2 wideout Donnie Corley), you’ve got to like his odds to make a play on it.

You shouldn’t sleep on Lattimore and the other members of the Buckeye secondary when it comes to run support, either. Their superior speed allows them the chance to adjust quickly defend the pass or the run, whether they’re in their preferred press-quarters scheme or otherwise. At the bottom of the video box, you’ll see Lattimore a step behind DE Sam Hubbard, in perfect position to make a play on the ball should the running back escape. (As it happened, LB Chris Worley—no slouch himself—didn’t need any help to wreck the play in the backfield.)

Run or pass, Marshon Lattimore is becoming a force to be reckoned with in college football. The Buckeyes need to take care of business for the next two weeks to have a prayer at the college football playoff. If they get there, Lattimore will be no small part of the reason why.

The Big Ten might fail to send it’s best team to the playoff, thanks, in part, to Maryland and Rutgers.

This should be a banner year for the Big Ten.

After being the butt of everyone’s jokes for at least half a decade, the league now has two teams in the College Football Playoff rankings, with just two regular season weeks to go. The conference has four teams in the top ten, one of the strongest paths to being the first conference to get two teams in the playoff, and a legitimate, credible argument for being the best conference in America this season. In football. It’s true!

And yet, once again, the league might accidentally screw up a good thing.

You’ve probably heard, at this point, how the Big Ten east tiebreakers go. The team that actually controls it’s own destiny at this point isn’t No. 2 ranked Ohio State, or No. 3 Michigan, but No. 8 Penn State, who only needs to beat Rutgers and Michigan State to clinch a division championship.

Penn State is a good football team, maybe even a very good one, but by just about every metric, they aren’t as good as Ohio State or Michigan, OSU-PSU final score not withstanding. Michigan is second in S&P+, Ohio State is third, and Penn State is 12th. Both Ohio State and Michigan have superior wins to Penn State, whose best non-Ohio State win is probably Temple. And it would be very difficult to argue that Penn State would have a better shot at making a run in the playoff, against a team like Alabama or Clemson, than Ohio State or Michigan.

But the Nittany Lions hold the tiebreaker over the Buckeyes, fair and square. They blocked the kicks, they beat the Buckeyes, and if Ohio State wins out and knocks off Michigan, and if Penn State takes care of business against two bad football teams, they’re off to the Big Ten championship game, and potentially, the playoff, even over Ohio State.

A major reason for this? Maryland and Rutgers. They’ve messed this up again.

The Big Ten conference schedule expanded to nine games this season, but that still only gives each Big Ten East team three crossover games with the West. Penn State has avoided arguably the three best teams in the West this season, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Northwestern, and they got Iowa, their best crossover opponent, at home.

Meanwhile, Ohio State faced nearly the hardest Big Ten schedule possible, drawing Wisconsin, Nebraska and Northwestern, beating them all. Their Big Ten achievements are in no way equal. But the rules are the rules, and because Penn State lost the correct game and won the correct one, they might advance.

This happened last year too, as an Iowa team that almost everybody suspected wasn’t actually as good as their record, advanced to the Big Ten championship game without ever playing Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State or Penn State. They lost a close game to a weakened Michigan State team in the final, and then got summarily blasted to the moon by Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

Next year, that team might be Michigan State, as they skip Wisconsin and Nebraska next season (and get Iowa at home). Sometimes the pendulum swings the other way. In 2018, the Michigan Wolverines draw both, and in a year when they must play Michigan State and Ohio State on the road.

These aren’t balanced at all. And if one team gets to play two or three fewer games against high quality opposition than the other, they’re going to be at a significant advantage.

This hasn’t just been a problem in football. Last year, the games with Rutgers dragged down the RPI, and probably the NCAA seed line, of multiple Big Ten basketball programs. The disparities in league schedule quality will surely become a factor come March for this season as well.

It’s one thing to goof on Maryland and Rutgers football being bad. Watching another 50-point blowout isn’t the worst thing in the world, and if it wasn’t Rutgers, maybe it’s Purdue or Illinois serving up a similar result.

But the required annual games against both teams also creates an opportunity cost: every game against a punchless Terp squad is a game your team isn’t playing against Iowa, or Nebraska, or Wisconsin. And that not only can weaken your strength of schedule ranking, it might help serve up a division title to somebody else.

The Big Ten conference schedule is set through 2019. Here’s hoping that in the future, a better source of balance might be built in place, where a potential division title contender can’t miss every single probable strong team from the other division while their peers grab all of them.

Maybe Penn State loses in the next two weeks. Maybe Michigan wins out and renders this conversation moot. But the way the league is structured, this could happen again very soon, and it sucks for players, coaches, and fans, not to mention the league.

Otherwise, we could be looking at a scenario where the Big Ten squanders its best playoff positioning it’s likely to get in years.

Hope the New York and DC TV markets were worth it.
