The Bucks will try to shake off a close loss with a win against the Gophers.

After narrowly defeating Nebraska a week ago, the Ohio State Buckeyes played another close contest Sunday, this time against Northwestern. However this time around, the Buckeyes were on the wrong side of a 74-72 game at home.

It was a disappointing loss after the Buckeyes knocked off Michigan State, and put together another win against the Huskers. But the Bucks fell flat, and it was the Wildcats’ first win in Columbus for the first time in 40 years.

We saw the same inconsistency that’s plagued the Buckeyes for at least the past year and a half. Early on they shot the ball well, but those pesky turnovers just wouldn’t stay away, and it’s what kept Northwestern in the game early. Not to mention the Wildcats crashing the offensive glass. At this point, the Buckeyes are what they are. That’s fine, we’re still going to tune in because we don’t know when we’re going to get treat to that big Marc Loving game (which, to be fair, he’s played fine anyway), or a JaQuan Lyle passing clinic, or a Kam Williams hot streak. Those are fun.

Wednesday, Minnesota will be trying to prevent any of the aforementioned events from happening. The Golden Gophers have lost three in a row coming into the game against the Bucks, with losses on the road to Michigan State and Penn State, and a 78-76 nail-biter against Wisconsin. They’re 15-5 on the year after starting off 13-2 with their only losses to Florida State on the road, and at home against Michigan State.

They’re similar to the Buckeyes when it comes to scoring distribution. Three players are averaging at least 11 points per game, and two more are averaging nine. While they initially looked like they might be a force in the Big Ten earlier this season, the recent slide has brought Richard Pitino’s team back down to Earth. That doesn’t mean the Buckeyes will have an easy time with them, and it’s almost a great time for them to break their skid, despite being on the road.

Numbers to know

11

Ohio State has 11 regular season games left. At 12-8, the Buckeyes seemingly almost have to win out to at least have a shot at the NCAA Tournament. It’s also going to be pretty difficult to keep Thad Matta’s streak of 20-win seasons alive. He’s at 12 right now, and Ohio State went 21-14 last season. The Buckeyes could do it, but things don’t look great right now.

9.3

That’s how many rebounds Trevor Thompson is averaging per game. Thompson has looked better this season, and his 9.3 boards per game are second in the Big Ten, only behind player of the year candidate Caleb Swanigan. If he’s able to give the Buckeyes second chances and prevent those of Minnesota, that will be key in whether or not the Bucks come away with the win.

3.1

That’s the number of blocks per game Reggie Lynch averages. It’s good for the best in the Big Ten and 4th in the nation. The 6’10 center is the anchor of the Minnesota defense, and could create problems for the Buckeyes that could be too great to overcome. The Ohio State bigs are going to have to step up in a huge way to prevent Lynch from dominating the rim.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Marc Loving

The Buckeyes have won this season when Loving is on his game. They’re going to need that Wednesday, and for the remainder of the season if they hope to keep Thad Matta’s streak of 20-win seasons alive and the (slim) chance at an NCAA Tournament berth. He played well in their two most recent wins, but it’s tough when things aren’t flowing well around him. He can get a lot of help, starting with our other Buckeye of note here...

JaQuan Lyle

Lyle’s ability to distribute the rock — like the rest of the team — is hot and cold. When he was in high school, and first came to Ohio State, he had to dial down some of the passes, because they were so great that his teammates couldn’t handle them. Now, it’s not a given anymore. Yet when he’s in a groove, he’s arguably one of the best passing guards in the Big Ten. He sees things out on the floor that others don’t. But it starts with cutting down turnovers and getting teammates involved. Once they get going, they’re hard to stop.

Minnesota

Nate Mason

Mason’s one of the more experienced players on Minnesota’s team as a junior. He’s seen the floor since he was a freshman, appearing in every single game, and even starting eight of them. Now, he’s the Gophers’ leading scorer and passer, averaging 13.7 points and 5.6 assists per game, which is best in the Big Ten. He’ll serve as a great challenge for the Buckeye guards, who tend to have good defensive streaks. Wednesday night will have to be one of them if they hope to slow down Mason.

Jordan Murphy

Murphy was a Big Ten All-Freshman team honoree last season, and started 20 games for the Gophers. This year he’s leading the team in rebounds with 7.7. The Gophers don’t lean on him for points, but he’s still fourth on the team averaging 9.9 per game. The Buckeyes match up fine with him, but if there’s going to be somebody grabbing offensive boards to our frustration, it’s going to be Murphy.

The Buckeyes are trying to sway the best defensive tackle in the 2017 class.

A house call

Urban Meyer and his coaching staff will reportedly be using an in-home visit on Marvin Wilson tonight. Meyer has put the full-court press on Wilson over the last few months and with National Signing Day on the horizon, the Buckeyes are in a position to strike. In the past, Meyer has been notorious during these visits that take place late in the process and he’ll try and pull the five-star defensive tackle away from LSU—who seem like the favorite as of now.

A commitment from Wilson would be huge for the Buckeyes, and though Ohio State returns their entire defensive line in 2017, Wilson would still have a chance to challenge for playing time.

@ChaseBurcher Wednesday I believe.

— Jeremy Birmingham (@Birm) January 24, 2017
California dreamin’

There is news worth noting that 2018 wide receiver Jalen Hall has been hearing a lot from Ohio State. Hall is a unanimous five-star prospect from Los Angeles. With Ohio State’s struggles this past season in the passing game, Urban Meyer has made it a point to upgrade offensive skill positions across the board. Trevon Grimes, Brendon White and Jaylen Harris were huge gets for 2017, and it looks as if the Buckeyes have zeroed in on Hall. Winning this battle won’t be easy. Ohio State doesn’t go into California too often to grab the best player in the state.

— Adam Gorney (@adamgorney) January 24, 2017

Couple that in with what looks like a resurgence from USC, and it only complicates this process more. Still, Zach Smith has proven to be an ace recruiter and his best efforts will surely be needed in this one. The Buckeyes need to get Hall on campus sometime this spring/summer to have a legitimate shot in this one.

A hometown visit

According to reports, 2018 linebacker Brian Asamoah will be on campus on Saturday for Ohio State’s Junior Day. The trip isn’t too far for Asamoah, as he’s a standout at St. Francis DeSales in Columbus. Though he’s is a bit undersized for a prototypical linebacker—6-foot-0, 205 pounds—Asamoah is extremely productive. Right now, Asamoah does not hold an offer from Ohio State, but he was able to gain some traction on the recruiting trail throughout his junior season; he does hold offers from Michigan, UCLA, Penn State, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Asamoah has not yet been evaluated by the major recruiting sites, but that should not take away with how people view the 2018 prospect. Asamoah is one of the best in Ohio in his class and the Buckeyes will continue to evaluate him over the next several months.

With players like Ezekiel Elliott and Joey Bosa leading the way, the Buckeyes have starred at the professional level.

“At the very least, it's safe to say that the Ohio State Buckeyes just sent one of the best draft classes the league has ever seen into the NFL.”

- Bill Barnwell, ESPN

When you stack up this most recent draft class of rookies from Ohio State, it’s hard to pick a better group of rookies in the NFL, ever. That might be lofty praise, but in reality, it’s hard to match what the former Buckeyes have done on the football field this past season. Just to start things off at the top of the list, you have Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott, who just had one of the best seasons by a rookie running back in NFL history and Joey Bosa, who is an obvious choice for Defensive Rookie of the Year. From there, you have Taylor Decker, who started at left tackle all season for a Detroit Lions team that made it to the playoffs and Michael Thomas who played with the New Orleans Saints (and where he hauled in 92 receptions, the second-most ever from a rookie receiver) where he had 1,137 receiving yards on the year.

It doesn’t stop there, and even that alone may have been enough to determine this class as the best ever. When you throw in guys like Eli Apple, who was an impact corner for the New York Giants, and defenders Vonn Bell, Darron Lee, and Adolphus Washington, who all had solid individual seasons on subpar teams, the case gets even stronger. Cardale Jones didn’t have much of an impact but Braxton Miller did start in six games for the Houston Texans this season.

“We had talked about it together. But we actually didn’t all expect to have the exact same room as we did last year. Nobody really expected that because that rarely happens. Obviously we love playing with each other and the fact that we all wanted to come back, we’re all happy. Now that it has happened, we’ve got a lot to prove and a lot of responsibility to perform like one of the best units on the team.”

- Sam Hubbard via Austin Ward, ESPN

There was surely a slight sigh of relief for Urban Meyer and the rest of the Ohio State coaching staff when several key defensive linemen decided they wanted to come back for another season with the Buckeyes. After all, Tyquan Lewis - the Big Ten defensive lineman of the year - could have easily jumped to the NFL. The same could really be said for the physical freak that is Sam Hubbard who will help provide a pass rush on the other end of the defensive line. Another junior that could have potentially gone on to the NFL was Jalyn Holmes, who returns for another season.

When you stop to consider the talent around those three already coming back, the potential for Ohio State’s defensive line in 2017 is scary high. Nick Bosa, Dre’Mont Jones, and even someone like Tracy Sprinkle who suffered a season-ending injury in the first game against Bowling Green, could see a lot of time and make a large impact next year. The Buckeyes have been fortunate to have some of the better defensive lines in the country the past several years and 2017 is shaping up to be no different as the unit will likely anchor a defense that is losing quite a bit of talent in the secondary.

“[Ezekiel Elliott] is the first Cowboys player to win SN's award since Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett in 1977, and the third overall. The other winner also was a running back, Calvin Hill, in 1969.”

- Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News

Despite his team being knocked out in the playoffs, Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was named Sporting News’ Rookie of the Year for 2016. The former Buckeye was simply sensational in his first year in the NFL, rushing for 1,631 yards and 16 touchdowns and only fell short of Eric Dickerson’s rookie numbers as a running back. He also helped the Cowboys enter the playoffs as the top seed with a 13-3 record on the season. It’s also worth noting that Elliott only played in 13 games, none of those games missed from injury, but rather his team making sure he stayed rested for the postseason.

As the article above points out, what’s impressive about Elliott’s numbers are not just in the stats themselves but rather that he’s not in a league that relies on workhorse running backs anymore. If anything, it’s a quarterback’s league and the MVP voting shows that, as Elliott was joined by players such as Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Matt Ryan.

Michigan is headed to Rome, and the Buckeyes need to keep pace.

On Monday, news broke that Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh plans to take his team to Rome for three of their 15 spring practices. It’s an interesting choice, to be sure, although it does give the players a great chance to absorb some culture and see some of history’s most notable sites.

Harbaugh’s move left us wondering: Where should Ohio State go this spring to keep pace with its rival?

Hoth

lxcYzO05.jpg

Most coaches like to host preseason practices in the blazing hot sun. But that’s almost heretical to true Big Ten aficionados, fans of a conference whose reputation is staked on gutting out 9-6 wins in blinding snowstorms.

Where better to train for the Big Ten’s most inhospitable environments than the galaxy’s most fearsome ice moon? A place whose snow almost got the best of Luke Skywalker seems like the perfect proving ground for a team looking to reconquer its conference.

(Downside: the “SEC teams don’t want no smoke, they’re not tough enough to play up north!!!” takes would reach a level of fervor heretofore unknown if this actually somehow happened.)

Rome, NY

Universities like Ohio State and Michigan tend to have the nicest of everything, but it’s worth noting that college football is also a massive, unwieldy beast made of unsustainable debt. Programs need to start thinking about fiscal responsibility to survive in these tumultuous times. So why not replicate the Harbaugh experience...on a budget?

Rome, NY is a charming city of 34,000 in Oneida County. It’s the former home of people from basketball legend Pat Riley to Roots’ Alex Haley. Worried that the Wolverines might get more history than the Buckeyes on their trip to the lesser Rome? Fear not. Rome, NY is not only the birthplace of the Erie Canal, it’s also the home of America’s first cheese factory. Take that, Italy.

R’lyeh

gV1_ETWa.jpg

Unfamiliar with Ohio State’s newest spring practice location? Allow author H.P. Lovecraft to enlighten you:

The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.

But enough about the NCAA, am I right?

Seriously, though: it’s a great location, and it’s fertile recruiting ground for a team that’s never said no to bringing in vast shapes (be they loathsome or otherwise). You have to be creative in this business to get a leg up on the next guy, and given how often Urban Meyer has been accused of dark wizardry, this feels like a logical next step.

San Marino

Look, if Jim Harbaugh was brazen enough to host a satellite camp in Warren, Ohio, there’s no more high ground for him to take if Urban Meyer wants to bring his players down the road from the Wolverines this spring.

San Marino, besides sounding like the name a former Miami Dolphins QB would give the cops if he got busted at a house party, is the fifth-smallest country in the world, enclaved entirely within the nation of Italy. Named after Marinus, a Roman stonemason who rebuilt the walls of a city after its destruction by pirates, it’s a place built on #grit and #grind.

(Here’s hoping neither team’s players hear the last words of Marinus and decide to abdicate, though: Relinquo vos liberos ab utroque homine translates to “I leave you free from both men.”)

The Buckeyes continue to ensure a bright future by recruiting the best players in the country.

With less than two weeks until National Signing Day 2017, this year’s recruiting class is coming to a close. While the coaches have a few targets they are working in hopes of adding to an already historic class, they are also looking forward to the future.

On Monday, Urban Meyer and the Ohio State football program offered two of the best recruits in the 2018 class. The first came with an offer for four-star safety target Myles Sims (Atlanta, GA / Westlake).

Sims is an incredible athlete and is building an impressive offer sheet. With recent offers from Tennessee, LSU, West Virginia and Oregon just this month, the Buckeyes will have their hands full competing with some of the top programs in the country for Sims.

Listed at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, the Georgia native is built to be a successful defensive back. Sims also comes in as the No. 210 overall prospect in the 2018 class and No. 20 prospect from the state of Georgia, according to 247sports.

Sims said on Twitter that he is “honored” to receive the offer — and expect the Buckeyes to continue to pursue him.

— Spider™ (@simsmyles) January 23, 2017

The Ohio State coaching staff wasn’t finished, as another offer was announced Monday afternoon. This time it was elite wide receiver recruit Jacob Copeland (Pensacola, Fl / Pine Forest).

Copeland is seen as a four-star WR in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He is seen as the No. 11 WR in the class and is listed as the country’s No. 79 overall prospect.

The big-bodied WR is listed at 6-foot-1, 188 pounds and has already racked up an impressive list of offers. While he has received offers from schools like Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, LSU, USC and Michigan, hometown schools Florida State, Florida and Miami appear to be the favorites.

However, it is still early in the 2018 recruiting class and if Copeland has the senior season he is expected to have, expect Ohio State to continue to target him next year. With Urban Meyer leading this program, the Buckeyes are contenders to land most recruits they target.
