Ohio State continues the chase up to National Signing Day (and beyond).

With National Signing Day 2017 fast approaching, the Ohio State staff hasn’t wasted any of their time. Whether it being on the road to see current 2017 commits, making their pitches to anyone and everyone, or pulling out all the stops during in-home visits with five-stars yet to be decided on their college of choice, it’s easy to see the time is ticking downward fast until the 2017 class is all but cemented and it’s off to 2018 and 2019. Speaking of future classes, while being on the road for immediate incoming players, the staff has also been able to leave a Scarlet and Gray trail as they continue offering some the younger top talent in the country. 2017 may be getting closer to the finish line, but for Ohio State, that just means a head start to 2018 and beyond.

Eagles’ wings headed for Zone 6?

Ohio State has been able to hold fort in the Lone Star State with their pick-ups in the 2017 class. Their presence in Texas has been easily the best outside of any Texas school and Urban Meyer sure looks to keep it that way. With so much talent available, who could blame him? As recent as Wednesday, that Texas to Ohio connection may have struck another chord as the Buckeyes handed out another offer.

Making a stop in Houston, Ohio State took their time in meeting and offering Brennan Eagles. A 2018 four-star receiver prospect, Eagles boasts 18 current scholarship offers. With his 6-foot-4, 200-pound frame, it’s no surprise to see schools such as Georgia, Auburn, USC, Texas and Oklahoma throw their hat into the ring for Brennan.

This is crazy man!!, just received my 3rd Big 10 offer and offer #18 from THE Ohio State University ⚪⚫️ ️ . #Zone6 #WRU pic.twitter.com/qFLTBONdOv

— Brennan Eagles (@_BrennanEagles_) January 26, 2017

Ranking as No. 16 receiver in the 2018 class and the No. 11 best prospect overall in Texas, Eagles will certainly be one to keep an eye on as even more top programs begin to hover around the Houston native. There may be no clear leader at the time for Eagles, but with Ohio State in the mix and their recent track record of sending receivers to the NFL, Eagles will certainly give the Buckeyes his full attention.

Hall receives OSU offer

As much success as the Buckeyes have had at sending talent to the NFL recently, no position has done better at that then the defensive backs unit. The talent and development that is taking place in the Silver Bullets secondary is truly amazing. Part of that is recruiting to find the next pieces to the successful puzzle and yesterday could have been another link in that chain.

Truly Blessed and honored to receive a(n) offer from Ohio State University pic.twitter.com/S4uU7gsEsv

— Gurvan Hall (@gurvanhall6) January 26, 2017

Gurvan Hall (West Palm Beach, FL / Palm Beach Lakes) is a four-star safety prospect and is the latest recipient of an Ohio State offer. At 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, Hall has the size Ohio State loves in their defensive backfield. A 2018 prospect, Hall is currently ranked as the No. 21 best safety in the country and No. 43 overall prospect in the Sunshine State.

While his ranking may not be as high as some may think, Hall’s offer list speaks for itself, as he currently holds 26 offers from the likes of Alabama, Clemson, Miami, Tennessee, Michigan and Florida. With that resume, it’s pretty convincing that the next 247sports ranking update may see a serious shift upwards for Gurvan Hall.

The Buckeyes may have a little later timing than other programs after Hall, but with their track record of sending defensive backs to the NFL at a record pace, Hall will certainly be listening to what Ohio State has to say.

Big time visitor headed to Columbus

Speaking of the safety position, Ohio State brings in loads of talent for 2017 and 2018 may just keep up with the trend. This weekend, Ohio State is set to host easily one of their top overall targets for 2018 in Jaiden Woodbey. Woodbey, a four-star out of St. John Bosco (Calif.) has been linked to the Buckeyes ever since he received his offer last June, but since then, it’s been a roller-coaster of events trying to get him on campus for a visit.

However, a visit from Coach Studrawa last week looks to have been successful as Jaiden took to Twitter to let everyone know he was headed to Columbus this weekend for an unofficial visit with the Buckeyes. A huge visit nonetheless, Woodbey is currently ranked as the No. 3 safety in the 2018 class and the No. 4 overall player in a talent-rich California.

‼️PSA ‼️
Unofficial to Ohio State this week ‼️ #Zone6

— I AM JAIDEN WOODBEY™ (@JaidenWoodbey6) January 26, 2017

Ohio State may not be the clear-cut favorite to land Woodbey, but they are more than certainly in the mix for the four-star, as Woodbey himself placed the Buckeyes in his final four schools he is considering. Coach Meyer and Ohio State may have a little ground to make up on the home team, USC, but this weekend will certainly play a big role in things on the Woodbey front moving forward.

Top tight-end set to see Ohio State

As Ohio State is set to host one of their bigger recruiting dates in this short year already, the Buckeyes received good news again yesterday that their top tight end target, Jeremy Ruckert, would be in town for the Ohio State Junior Day weekend when he made the announcement via his Twitter account.

I'll be back in Columbus this weekend.. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/xSGOWW1ykv

— Jeremy Ruckert (@Jeremy_Ruckert1) January 26, 2017

Ruckert is no new name to Ohio State recruiting, but he is currently ranked as the No. 3 TE in the country for the 2018 class and is also the second best prospect at any position in New York. Standing at just under 6-foot-6, 230 pounds, Ruckert not only has the size to be a great blocking tight end, but has demonstrated time and time again that he also possesses the key abilities in being a superior pass-catching tight end at the next level.

As thing sit currently, the Buckeyes own every prediction on the 247sports crystal ball, but there’s still some time before a final decision is made. Luckily, this weekend will once again be a chance for Ohio State to deepen their relationship, but may also be a chance to solidify their place as Ruckert’s current leader.

A visit to Utah

While the Buckeyes were sending out offers, they were also on the road trying to get offerees to sign on the dotted line. Big-time Utah target Jay Tufele (South Jordan, UT / Bingham) got the in-home visit treatment by Meyer and Larry Johnson.

It was an honor to have @OSUCoachMeyer and @R2X_Rushmen1 over to the house!! #GOBUCKS #greatness pic.twitter.com/K3sbfforn9

— Jay Tufele (@tufele123) January 27, 2017

The coaches have good reason to make the trip to Utah, as Tufele is considered the No. 3 DT in the country and No. 1 player in Utah for the 2017 class, according to 247sports. Also, Ohio State is running into stiff competition for Tufele; name brand institutions Michigan, BYU, USC and Utah are in Tufele’s top five.

As the clock ticks closer to signing day, we get closer to finding out where Tufele will end up going. Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land, as we’ll update you on Tufele watch.

The Buckeyes won their fourth game in a row thanks to excellent execution down the stretch.

Ohio State women’s basketball claimed its fourth victory in a row, outlasting Minnesota 88-76 at the Barn in Minneapolis to run its conference record to 8-1.

Junior All-American Kelsey Mitchell led the 15th-ranked Buckeyes with 25 points, while Shayla Cooper came alive with 18 of her own, and Stephanie Mavunga turned in a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds.

In the losing effort, the Gophers’ Carlie Wagner scored a game-high 34 points, as her team fell to 2-6 in Big Ten play.

This one had an ugly start to it, with Ohio State making just two of its first seven shots and Minnesota having a scoring drought of over three minutes. By the midway point in the first quarter, the Buckeyes held a slim 7-6 lead.

Ohio State shot 6-for-15 total in the period, and failed to connect on any of its five three-point attempts. The Buckeyes also turned the ball over six times. The Gophers, meanwhile, turned it over five times and went 0-for-3 from beyond the arc, but with four points apiece from Jessie Edwards and Wagner, claimed a 14-13 lead after ten minutes of play.

The two sides put their sluggish starts behind them to open the second quarter, with 15 combined points scored in the first 2:15. Ohio State made seven of its first nine shots in the frame, jumping out to a 29-24 lead, and after Mitchell hit her second triple, that lead grew to 32-24 and prompted a Minnesota timeout.

A furious pace continued throughout the quarter, with both teams getting up and down the court. Another scoring drought for the Gophers, this one lasting two and a half minutes, allowed the Buckeyes to claim their largest lead to that point at 37-29.

The advantage for the scarlet and gray would remain at eight heading into the locker room, 39-31. That number could have been much larger were it not for a field goal drought covering the final three minutes of the half for Ohio State.

Mitchell had nine of her 11 first half points in the second quarter, and led all scorers through twenty minutes of play. Wagner led Minnesota with 10 points of her own, though she shot 0-for-5 from three-point range.

The icy shooting of the first quarter returned to start the third, as the Buckeyes and Gophers combined to miss their first seven shots. A jumper by Gadiva Hubbard of Minnesota finally put an end to the streak, and after Wagner connected on a pair of free throws and a jumper, the lead had been cut to 41-37.

The free throws seemed to ignite Wagner, who by the midway point in the period had already scored eight, keeping the home team in close contact, down 47-43. Cooper found a rhythm of her own, scoring six points in quick succession, and after a pair of free throw makes by Kiara Lewis, Ohio State had pushed the lead back out to eight at 51-43.

Both teams heated up down the third quarter stretch, combining to hit seven of the final ten shots attempted, and making their way to the fourth quarter with the Buckeyes in front 62-56. Wagner almost singlehandedly kept it that close, scoring 13 in the quarter for the Gophers.

A Wagner three in the early going of the fourth pulled Minnesota to within three points at 64-61, but Mitchell found her stroke from the outside, hitting a jumper and a pair of three-pointers as Ohio State took a 76-66 lead with just over five minutes remaining.

The Buckeyes made six straight field goals, executing during crunch time the way a team needs to in order to earn a road win, but Wagner would not go down without a fight. The junior hit a pair of threes to draw her squad to within 78-72 with four and a half minutes to go, but a field goal drought of better than four minutes would ultimately seal the Gophers’ fate and give Ohio State the victory.

Up next, the Buckeyes return to Columbus to host Nebraska on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.

I'm just waiting for the day we can talk Bob Uecker, Mike Lange or Tom Hamilton (or heck, Gus Johnson) into being the Buckeyes' play-by-play man. I've never liked Paul Keels, though I understand I'm in the minority there.

And yes, I know that Uecker, Lange and Hammy probably don't know the first thing about football. They're just entertaining as all get-out.

As Mike Lange would say, on Saturday the Buckeyes beat NMSU like a rented mule.

LGHL Former Ohio State OL Chase Farris helps prepare Patriots for the Super Bowl

Former Ohio State OL Chase Farris helps prepare Patriots for the Super Bowl

Farris is the only Buckeye rookie that is headed to Houston for the Super Bowl as a Patriots practice squad player.

“To be at the highest level of football and be able to be a part of it on the highest stage of any football is a surreal feeling.”

- Chase Farris, New England Patriots practice squad offensive lineman via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Fifteen first-year players from Ohio State were in the NFL this year, but the one who will be involved in someway in the Super Bowl might surprise a lot of people. While Chase Farris won’t be on the field playing next Sunday in Houston, he is still making an impact in a way. The former Ohio State offensive lineman is a member of the New England Patriots’ practice squad, doing what he can to make sure his teammates are ready for the big game against the Atlanta Falcons. Leading up to the Super Bowl, Farris will be tasked with helping run some of Atlanta’s plays so the New England defense can try and get a handle on their opponents’ defense.

This is actually Farris’ second stint with the Patriots this year. After going undrafted, Farris first signed with Detroit before being released in August. The Lions signed Farris to their practice squad before eventually releasing him again. Farris then worked out with Jacksonville and Buffalo before the Patriots signed him to their practice squad. New England released Farris but ended up resigning him three weeks later. Even though Farris isn’t on the main roster, he knows it is a step in the right direction as he tries to release his dream of playing in the NFL. Who knows, he might even be able to earn a Super Bowl ring even before stepping on the field as a part of an active roster.

“It was fun. I learned a lot (in 2016) but at the same time, I’ve felt like I’ve been ready to play if my number has been called. It’s been kind of tough and sit back when you think you’re ready to play, but that’s my role and I embraced it.”

- Ohio State quarterback Joe Burrow via Ari Wasserman, Cleveland.com

Following the shutout loss in the Fiesta Bowl to Clemson, quarterback has been a bit of a hot-button topic for Ohio State fans. In reality it’s hard to not want a player with 100 career touchdowns back, but there were parts of the Buckeye fanbase who were ready to move on from J.T. Barrett. While Barrett has announced his intention to return for his senior season, there was a bit of brief chatter that backup Joe Burrow would be transferring. Burrow quickly shot down those rumors, but he is going to face a battle on the depth chart heading into this season.

Burrow is the only of the three quarterbacks who will vie for Barrett’s spot once he graduates who has seen the field for the Buckeyes. Dwayne Haskins gained some notoriety for the way he performed for Ohio State’s scout team this year, and it will be hard for Ohio State to keep the combination of his arm and athleticism on the bench. The wildcard could be Tate Martell, who has drawn comparisons to Johnny Manziel with his size and ability. Martell will likely take a redshirt this year, so he’ll only be a redshirt freshman heading into next season. The Buckeyes don’t have to rush Martell along, unless he forces his way into the quarterback conversation. Even though Ohio State faces questions at quarterback after Barrett, all three of these signal callers are only going to get better moving forward.

“Obviously how can I not think of what happened (at Wisconsin). To win a national title, to be a national title to be a two-time captain and play with the guys I played with. Those memories are forever. At this point for me, it’s all about Ohio State every day, and there’s no place I’d rather be right now. I’m here just to carry on the tradition.”

- Ohio State men’s hockey coach Steve Rohlik via Miles McQuinn, The Lantern

Any time Ohio State men’s hockey coach Steve Rohlik faces off with Wisconsin, it is a big deal. Rohlik was a part of Wisconsin’s 1990 national championship team. Tonight’s meeting has even more intrigue behind it, as he’ll be squaring off with Wisconsin head coach Mark Osiecki. On Wisconsin’s national title team, Rohlik was the captain, while Osiecki was one of the alternate captains. Along with Rohlik, Ohio State assistant coach Mark Strobel also played at Wisconsin, as he was captain for his junior and senior seasons, and was a part of the Wisconsin team that made the 1992 NCAA Tournament final.

The connections between Rohlik and Osiecki aren’t just limited to their time on the ice at Wisconsin. After 10 seasons as an assistant coach with Minnesota-Duluth, Rohlik joined Osiecki at Ohio State as an assistant coach. After the final game of the 2013 season, Osiecki was fired by Ohio State, and Rohlik was tabbed as his replacement. Tonight’s matchup marks the first time the two have met as opposing coaches since Rohlik took over for Osiecki in Columbus. Wisconsin already has 11 wins this season after just 12 victories the last two years, so whatever Osiecki has done in his first year in Madison is working. The Badgers will have their work cutout for them though, as they’ll face an Ohio State team that is ranked eighth in the country, their highest ranking since they were ranked sixth in January 2012.

“I feel like it takes time to jell any team in general. Once we switch the lineups, it’s different because we’re playing with different lineups, different personnel, so it takes a little while.”

- Ohio State guard Sierra Calhoun via Andrew Erickson, The Columbus Dispatch

Lately Ohio State’s women’s basketball team has been doing their best to keep their opponents on their toes by switching up the lineups. It remains to be seen if Ohio State will roll out a fourth different starting lineup in four games against Minnesota tonight, as head coach Kevin McGuff hadn’t decided who would start when asked earlier in the week.

Last week against Wisconsin, Ohio State used 10 different lineups in the first half. One downside to the tremendous depth Ohio State has, is when switching up the lineups so frequently, it might take those on the floor time to get comfortable with each other. Even with the shuffling Ohio State has done, they are still earning victories, winning eight of nine since their loss to UConn in December. Currently the Buckeyes sit just a half-game behind Maryland in the Big Ten standings, and look to be setting themselves up for another run in March on the shoulders of Kelsey Mitchell.

The Buckeyes face Duke in Durham Saturday to open their 2017 campaign.

The Ohio State men’s lacrosse season opens next week as the Buckeyes face 7th-ranked Duke in Durham. Ohio State enters the season ranked 17th in the USILA Preseason Coaches poll after finishing 2016 unranked following a disappointing 7-8 season in which they did not make the NCAA Tournament.

This season, Ohio State follows up its tough opener with four home games versus unranked, non-conference opponents before getting into the meat of their schedule, which includes road games against No. 17 Marquette, No. 12 Towson and No. 4 Notre Dame and a home matchup with No. 3 Denver in Columbus. The Buckeyes are scheduled to open conference play against No. 15 Penn State April 2 in Happy Valley.

The Big Ten as a conference is well-represented in the USILA’s preseason poll, with five teams ranked in the top 20 (there are six teams competing in league play--Michigan is the only outsider), including No. 2 Maryland, No. 8 Johns Hopkins, No. 16 Rutgers, Ohio State and Penn State. The Buckeyes are at an advantage, with their conference matchups against Maryland and Johns Hopkins, at least, being played at home. Ohio State will host the Big Ten men’s lacrosse tournament this post-season in Columbus.

The Buckeyes return nearly all of last season’s starters on attack and midfield, but will miss last season’s leading scorer on attack in Carter Brown, who was taken with the 56th pick in last year’s Major League Lacrosse Draft by the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Senior attackmen Austin Shanks, who led Ohio State in points last year with 15 goals and 16 assists, and Eric Fannell, who had 15 goals and nine assists of his own, started for most of last season and will provide much-needed scoring options from down low.

The Buckeyes also return attackmen J.T. Blubaugh and Colin Chell, who had 15 and 14 goals, respectively, on the season last year. Last year’s breakout freshman Jack Jasinski, who wound up starting a total of five games last year, will also provide some offensive firepower for the Buckeyes.

Fortunately, midfielder Johnny Pearson, who tied Brown in scoring with 20 goals on the season in 2016, is also coming back for his senior season. Along with Pearson, Tyler Pfister, who is a 2017 team captain, returns to the midfeld. Senior faceoff specialist Jake Withers is also coming back in 2017. Last year, the midfielder won nearly 61 percent of his faceoffs on his way to earning Big Ten Specialist of the Year honors. Along with Pfister, Withers was also selected as a captain for the 2017 campaign.

Ohio State will also have significant rebuilding to do on defense with the loss of Robby Haus, who was taken in the fourth round of the MLL Draft, and Chris Mahoney to graduation. Key for the unit will be senior defenseman Erik Evans--the lone returning starter on defense. Junior defenseman Freddy Friebot and sophomore Matt Borges, who played in all 15 games last year, are the likely candidates to replace the departed Haus and Mahoney.

Goalie Tom Carey returns for his senior season, having played in all but four minutes of game time last season. Carey saved 141 goals last season--nearly 51 percent of attempts.

The Buckeyes are also welcoming to campus an outstanding freshman class. Four incoming freshmen were picked as top 100 freshman to watch according to Inside Lacrosse, including Christian Feliziani (#27, faceoff specialist), Tre LeClaire (#29, midfielder), Dan Rooney (No. 46, attackman) and Josh Kirson (#60, goalie).

Feliziani, along with Borges and head coach Nick Myers, were part of the team that defeated Canada 13-12 in the U19 World Championships in July (they defeated LeClaire and defenseman Jeff Henrick, who played for the Canadian squad).

While the Buckeyes face a tough schedule, their core returning power and strong group of incoming freshman could make them a surprise both in the Big Ten and on the national stage this season.

Jean Levac/Postmedia Network: Eugene Melnyk announced that Tom Anselmi (R) is the new CEO and President of the Ottawa Senators, January 25, 2017.

Less than 24 hours after Ottawa’s exceptional win over the Eastern Conference leading Washington Capitals, the Senators called a press conference for 11 am yesterday to announce a major shakeup within the organization’s hierarchy.

Gone is one of the team’s founding fathers.

After spending 25 years with the organization, not including the years spent pre-ll, Cyril Leeder stepped down immediately as the team’s president.

Leeder had been with the organization for each of its 25 years and his involvement goes back years earlier when Bruce Firestone approached Randy Sexton and Cyril Leeder to help spearhead his efforts to bring an NHL hockey team back to the nation’s capital.

Not only did Leeder outlast his founding contemporaries with the Senators, but amidst the chaos of Eugene Melnyk’s absentee ownership, Leeder was the face of the franchise. A man whose connections and understanding of this community not only helped pacify this fan base, but helped grow the sport and strengthen this franchise’s roots within Ottawa. Firestone credits Leeder for saving this franchise on three separate occasions.

Postmedia’s Wayne Scanlan eloquently outlined all of Leeder’s triumphs and accomplishments before rightly asserting that Leeder deserved a better send off than this.

Replacing Leeder is former MLSE executive Tom Anselmi, who has been appointed as the hockey club’s new president and chief executive officer.

Speaking from today’s press conference, Senators owner Eugene Melnyk admitted that once the Senators’ RendezVous at LeBreton proposal was named as the NCCs’s preferred bid last April, the idea of hiring a new team president donned on him. Seven months later, he sent feelers out to Anselmi in early December to gauge his interest in the position.

Despite these kinds of timelines, Leeder found out he was being replaced this past Tuesday – just one day before yesterday’s press conference.

Thanks for your time and years of service, Cyril. You can pack your belongings in this cardboard box, but leave those Senators pens on your desk for the next guy.”

It hasn’t been all unicorns and blow jobs under Leeder’s watch however.

Attendance this season is down and not only is the organization’s brand stale, their disregard and unwillingness to embrace tradition or their small market status permeates this organization.

From the continued use of their home and away sweaters, to the advertisements and marketing campaigns designed to spur interest in this franchise feels minor league.

The sad reality is that this organization has beautiful original designs and fan-created alternate sweaters that it could easily just roll with, but for whatever reason, the organization has doubled-down on their uninspiring current design. At the time, it seemed a bit petty to ridicule the organization’s decision to redo the team’s commemorative Stanley Cup banners from the early 1900’s, but their remodeling or even the inclusion of the current logo on Daniel Alfredsson’s jersey banner are simply microcosms of the disdain that Senators fans have for the team’s logo and brand.

It is also hard to ignore the apathy that exists within this fan base.

Since their 2007 Stanley Cup Finals appearance, the Senators have won playoff round in the past 10 years.

When the window of contention closed, the organization’s willful blindness to that occurrence and their reckless pursuit of their short-term interests set the team back.

Coupled with ownership’s dwindling resources and inability or unwillingness to invest as much capital into his roster and hockey operations department, the dream of seeing this organization go from a have-not to a have was dead.

Despite the return to their small market reality, the organization repeatedly erred in its allocation of resources, preferring to continue its investment in short-term results. The problem was that the Senators never got any which helped create a pattern of taking one-step forward and two back, the Senators have failed to eclipse or move beyond a state in which the team struggles to move past its playoff contender status.

Yesterday Melnyk spoke to the organization’s pressing need to transform its brand and to bring someone into the fold who could bring significant land development experience to the Senators’ LeBreton Flats arena project.

On that front, it’s important to realize that Alsemi played a prominent role in the development of sports venues like the Rogers Centre (then Sky Dome), Rogers Arena in Vancouver and the Air Canada Centre. With his connections and experience as an engineer and landscape architect, maybe he is better suited to help lead this large-scale LeBreton Flats project.

I think Tom will go cross-country to get people to join us in Ottawa and there’s talent in Ottawa but just the kind of construction projects that they have in Toronto, Montreal and New York are humongous,” Melnyk said from yesterday’s press conference. “That’s what you need.”

Anselmi also has experience being in “charge of broadcast media, ticket sales, marketing and sports brands, corporate sales and partnerships, communications, Internet activities, community development, human resources and Leafs alumni.”

Anselmi had the background that Melnyk sought, but it’s not like his record is unblemished either.

It’s hard to ignore how the Maple Leafs, TFC and Raptors properties have all excelled in the years following Anselmi’s departure.

In particular, it was Anselmi’s stewardship of the TFC property that ultimately cost him his opportunity at filling the MLSE chief operating officer position that Richard Peddie vacated.

Upon Anselmi’s resignation from MLSE, Jeff Blair painted an interesting picture of Anselmi’s shortcomings:

Anselmi remained the personification of the lost hope that is TFC. Despite the sizable amount of currency he had among MLSE employees, whispers were he had no chance of being the permanent successor to Peddie. Anselmi, it was thought, was an okay technician but not a big-picture guy.

History will not be entirely fair to Anselmi, just as it won’t be fair to Peddie: They had a hand in building MLSE into an economic powerhouse, replete with real estate properties, and made fistfuls of money for the owners – but that matters naught to fans interested in championships and banners.”

It’s going to be challenging for Anselmi to make fistfuls of money in Ottawa, but that he has a reputation for doing so probably appeals to Melnyk.

For me, it feels like this changing of the guard is a decision that is not only fueled by ticket sales, but because Melnyk wanted a more experienced hand for the negotiations with the NCC because the process and negotiations aren’t unfolding as quickly as he would like.

Since being announced as the preferred LeBreton Flats proposal, the intent was for shovels to be in the ground soon and have the arena be ready for play in 2021. Whether those timelines remain intact is unknown, but it’s not like the NCC is renowned for its timely and efficient operations.

As exciting as a shakeup of this magnitude can be and what Anselmi could mean or do for this organization in terms of branding and the ushering in a new era at LeBreton Flats, there’s a part of me that views this through a cynical prism that focuses on ownership.

Eugene Melnyk is still present in this scenario and as Wayne Scanlan mentioned in his aforementioned article, “three different chief financial officers have worked under Melnyk in the past two years, and Peter O’Leary, marketing and ticket VP, a former Citizen executive, was fired recently.”

Cyril Leeder was someone who put out a lot of Melnyk’s fires and Anselmi doesn’t have much of a working relationship with Melnyk. As an owner who refuses to accept or admit responsibility for this organization’s situation, the pressure is going to be on Anselmi to have the skills and patience to work under Melnyk and fulfill his boss’ mandate. If he’s incapable or doesn’t have the patience, how long will he last when Melnyk’s looking for someone else to take the fall for this organization’s misfortunes?

Leeder was the one constant under Melnyk in an organization where front office stability ceases to exist.

Where they go from here is uncharted territory: it’s equal parts terrifying and exciting.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have never won in Iowa City under Tom Ryan. Is that about to change?

The wrestling season has been in full swing for months now, but this week we are finally getting to the meat of the Ohio State schedule with consecutive duals against #1 Penn State and #3 Iowa. The first of these two duals takes place Friday night at 8:00 p.m. when the Buckeyes travel to Iowa City for a showdown with the Hawkeyes.

The Buckeyes haven’t won in Iowa City in well over half a century, but this could be the year it all changes. To help break down the dual, we reached out to Ben Watson and Brandon Olinger of The Inside Trip podcast (@theinsidetrip1). These two have a wealth of wrestling experience and the ability to break things down on an incredibly technical level while still making it fun. You can check out their podcast on iTunes and most other podcast apps.

If the Buckeyes are to pull off the win on Friday they’re going to have to do it without Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder. The reigning heavyweight champ will be in Russia competing in a freestyle tournament this weekend. Still, the matchups are there and so is the opportunity. If things break the right way, the Buckeyes have a very real chance to earn their first victory in Iowa since before man had landed on the moon.

Now let’s get down to business.

Intermat has Iowa as its #3 ranked dual meet team (OSU is #4), but despite the high ranking, the Hawkeyes have resounding losses to the #1 and #2-ranked teams (Oklahoma State and PSU respectively). What is your take on this year’s Iowa squad? Is it really the third best team in the country?

Brandon: Prior to losing 8th ranked heavyweight, Sam Stoll, an argument could have been made that Iowa was the third-best dual team in the country. They return five All-Americans this year, including three finalists, and have a fantastic freshman currently ranked #2 in the country at 157lbs. Losing Stoll hurts them badly as a dual team but they still have a chance to score a lot of points at the national tournament. With that said, I am of the opinion Ohio State is the 3rd best team in the country right now. The Buckeyes feature a lineup that includes 6 wrestlers ranked in the top 10, including three wrestlers ranked at the top of their weight class. Oh yeah, they also have three guys who have won a national title.

Ben: Brandon is absolutely right that before losing Stoll, a strong argument could be made that Iowa was the third best team in the country. He was ranked 8th by Intermat and had a respectable shot at finding a spot on the podium come March. His loss probably affects Iowa’s total team score by around 5-6 points at nationals. The rest of the lineup, sans 165 and 197, is more than respectable boasting a number of returning All-Americans and a freshman phenom at 157. Still, the loss of Stoll takes Iowa out of the title hunt and places them in a fight for a trophy with the likes of Virginia Tech and Ohio State.

Give Ohio State fans one wrestler on the Iowa squad to keep an eye on?

Brandon: Watch out for Hawkeye junior Sammy Brooks. The #5-ranked 184 pound wrestler is an absolute character. He’s coming off an embarrassing loss last weekend in the dual against Penn State where he was pinned in 38 seconds by Bo Nickal. I have a feeling he isn’t going to be very happy about that and it may show in his wrestling.

You may remember him and his interview after winning the B1G10 wrestling tournament last year in which he said:

“I gain trust every time my hair grows a little more and a little more. I trust in myself and my mullet. It’s a process, you know. You can’t grow a great mullet in a day, (and) you can’t win a Big Ten title in a day.”

Ben: Hawkeye Junior 141-pounder, Topher Carton has quietly put together a solid year in his first season as a starter. Nevertheless, he has defeated only one ranked opponent (Javier Gasca from Michigan State University – currently ranked 19th). He had a chance to knock off 12th ranked Jimmy Guilibon from Penn State last weekend but allowed his early lead to evaporate late in the match giving up 4 takedowns (off the same move). Topher is a nice sized 141lbs and his matchup with Luke Pletcher shouldn’t disappoint. I’ll take Pletcher by a takedown or two.

KEY MATCHUPS

We asked our experts to take give us their takes on four of the most highly-anticipated matchups of the meet.

133

#1 Nathan Tomasello v. #3 Cory Clark

Ben: Nathan Tomasello, undefeated on the year and currently ranked #1 in the country, seems to have found yet another level this year making the weight jump up to 133lbs. He appears to be wrestling with a chip on his shoulder. He laid beatings on Jayden Eierman (ranked #9 at 141) and returning All-American and #6-ranked Zain Richards. He has been wrestling to punish his opponents. Two time NCAA finalist Clark has seen limited action this year. He has a nice but controversial win over #4 ranked Stevan Micic of Michigan but took a loss to freshman phenom and #2-ranked Kaid Brock from OKST. He’s seen little action this year due to an injury and has been wearing a large brace on his shoulder during his matches.

I think NATO’s pace and tenacity is too much for Clark as he still rounds into form. Give me NATO by a few.

Brandon: I also like Tomasello in this match. I find it interesting that if there ever was an “Iowa style” of wrestling, Tomasello is probably the one guy in the country who most embodies it. He relentlessly pressures his opponents, wearing them down, allowing him to get to his offense at ease. Clark has missed a chunk of the season dealing with an injury and you can tell he is still hampered by it. I have a feeling this won’t be the only time we see them face each other this year.

149

#5 Micah Jordan v. #3 Brandon Sorensen

Ben: The move up to 149lbs for Jordan has paid off. Jordan, a freshman last year, entered the 2016 NCAA tournament seeded 6th at 141lbs. Unfortunately, he fell in the round of 12, narrowly missing All-American honors. I do not see the same fate this year to the currently undefeated Jordan. This match against#3-ranked Sorenson will give us a glimpse at Jordan’s progress. Sorenson, a returning national finalist has two losses on the year. But, most recently he took 1st ranked Zain Retherford of Penn State to the wire before losing in the final overtime (many stamp Zain as unbeatable this year). Jordan and Sorensen do have a common opponent – returning All-American Justin Oliver of Central Michigan University. Jordan has beaten Oliver twice this year, once by major decision. Sorenson needed overtime to finish off Oliver. Give me Micah by a takedown.

Brandon: I’m not going to make many friends with this one, but give me Sorensen. First off, let me say that Micah is fantastic and now that he’s at an appropriate weight class, is wrestling great. I have no doubt that we will see him on the podium this year, maybe even the finals. With that said, I don’t think people truly appreciate how good Sorensen is and is often overshadowed by the more vocal characters on the Iowa team. As a junior, he’s already placed 4th and 2nd at the national tournament but is coming off 2 consecutive losses. I look for him to get back on track with the difference being his ability to wrestle well in all 3 positions and the fact that it’s in Carver Hawkeye Arena.

174

#1 Bo Jordan v. #13 Alex Meyer

Ben: I really hope we see big brother Bo Jordan wrestle in this dual. He is currently ranked 1st in the country but has only wrestled 8 matches, none of which were against elite completion. Give me Bo without hesitation if healthy with time to train for this match. I’m not sure that’s the case. Returning All-American Myer has been extremely inconsistent this year and up until last weekend had lost 4 of his last 6 matches. Then, he shocked me by beating super recruit and Junior World Gold Medalist Mark Hall of Penn State to an eruption of the crowd at Carver Hawkeye.

Myer has shown he’s got the goods to go with almost anyone at this weight. Give me Myer in a close one (I see it different come B1Gs).

Brandon: Assuming Bo wrestles, and I think he will, I like Bo in this match. Bo is obviously the more dominant wrestler, but we haven’t had much of a chance to see it with his limited mat time this season. Even if Bo wrestles, don’t expect it to be a blowout as Meyer has a knack for keeping matches close due to his wrestling style….which, if I may add, is pretty boring to watch. Meyer is also coming off a big win over super frosh, Mark Hall, in the dual against Penn State. However, I like Bo to control the tempo, get to his shots, and put a good ride on Meyer.

184

#10 Myles Martin v. #5 Sammy Brooks

Ben: The clash in styles makes this match an absolute delight. Returning national champion Martin is up a weight this year and has wrestled very well. He has three losses on the year (4 if you count his loss to Gabe Dean from Cornell at the All Star match), but all have been to very sound wrestlers. Martin, who is extremely fast and slick on his feet, has shown he can put up points in bunches against solid competition. He is also an above average rider. Returning All-American Sammy Brooks, most famously known for his renowned mullet interview after winning the B1G title last year, is doing a yeomen’s job this year. He has impressive wins over ranked opponents (see his win over Boyd 13-3). Although, most recently, he was made to look silly by Bo Nickal from Penn State while getting caught in a spladle early in the first period. Brooks is a banger and will look to impose his will on Martin. I like Martin to get to his offense and win this match by two takedowns.

Brandon: What a match this will be…or at least should be. Their styles couldn’t be any more different but if I’m picking a winner, I’ll gladly take Martin in this match. Call it hunch, call it a guess, but I think that we may be seeing Martin turn the corner this year as his confidence grows along with his body at the new weight class. After a disappointing Midlands, he has come on strong in his last couple of matches and this is the perfect match to make statement that he is still one of the contenders in the deep 184 weight class.

Aside from the four matches listed above, what’s another contest that you’re looking forward to catching?

Ben: I want to see how Ohio State’s 165lbs Cody Burcher fairs against Iowa’s Joey Gunther. Neither of these wrestlers are ranked, but Burcher has some nice wins and close losses to very good competition. I get the sense that this is the type of match we see in a consolation round of the B1Gs with the winner punching his ticket to the national tournament.

Brandon: Honestly, I’m looking forward to the heavyweight match. Both teams will be without their regular starters with Stoll done for the year due to injury and Snyder competing overseas. What that leaves us with is a match featuring Josh Fox and Steven Holloway, 2 unheralded and undersized backups getting to do battle. I think this dual has a chance to be close and come down to the wire and I would love to see Josh Fox get to be the hero. How awesome would that be for a career backup getting a chance to win the dual for his team, on the road in Carver!!

Historically, Ohio State almost never wins in Carver Hawkeye Arena. What needs to happen for the Buckeyes to break through and record a road win against Iowa?

Ben: Bo Jordan has to wrestle, and he has to win. tOSU has to avoid giving up big bonus points at 125lbs and 157lbs. This is going to be a great dual. Go Bucks!

Brandon: Getting a win in Carver Hawkeye Arena is not an easy task. As a wrestling fan, I’d have to say it is without a doubt the greatest wrestling atmosphere in all of college wrestling. When breaking down this dual, I see each team favored in 2 matches (Iowa-125/157 & tOSU-174/197) which leaves 6 swing matches. The Buckeyes need to limit bonus points in the matches they are not favored and win 4 out of the 6 swing matches. If they can do that, which is a great possibility, then they should leave Carver Hawkeye Arena with the win.

So there you have it. Thanks again to Brandon and Ben from The Inside Trip for helping out this week. Be sure to follow them on Twitter (@theinsidetrip1). They’ll have a new podcast out early next week recapping all of the action.
