usa_today_9885995.0.jpg

Let’s take a look.

Okay, let’s start out with an absolutely explosive and controversial take: Ohio State basketball is not very good right now.

We can rehash the hows and the whys later, but whether it’s because of injuries, or coaching, or development, or roster construction, or something else, this team isn’t going anywhere. Maybe they make the NIT and get an extra game or two. Maybe they miss it entirely. But it would be very unlikely for anything to happen this year that would make Ohio State fans consider this season to be anything other than a serious disappointment.

Even if Ohio State fans would like some dramatic changes with the program, right now, that doesn’t seem likely. Thad Matta is the best basketball coach Ohio State has ever had, and even with the program declining over the last four years, there haven’t been any reports to think he’s lost so much political capital with Gene Smith that he’d be forced out, even if the Buckeyes miss the NIT.

But coaching changes or not, Ohio State’s roster is going to look different next year. Maybe a lot different. Is it good enough to end Ohio State’s skid and get back to the NCAAs? Is it worth getting excited about?

Let’s take a closer look.

Point Guard:

JaQuan Lyle (Junior)

C.J Jackson (Junior)

Braxton Beverly (Freshman)

Even with a disappointing season, there’s a non-trivial chance that JaQuan Lyle could be playing somewhere other than Columbus next season. He’s a bit old for his age, and if he wanted to pursue a professional basketball career, either in the NBA G-League or overseas, he may want to do that sooner rather than later. Lyle almost certainly wasn’t recruited to be a four-year type player anyway. The fact that Ohio State is issuing offers to other 2017 point guards right now could be a sign that they expect an opening at this position group as well.

If Lyle leaves, this is probably the biggest question mark on the roster. Jackson’s three point shooting has cratered this season (based on his JUCO performances, he can’t shoot under 25% from three again, right?), and with Beverly, the Buckeyes would be unproven, and also small, at the position. Beverly has been a prolific high school scorer, but likely will need seasoning before he’s ready to contribute big minutes for Ohio State.

Off Guard:

Kam Williams (RS Senior)

There are plenty of other guys who may see time on the wing, as the Buckeyes may use some of their “forwards” at this spot interchangeably, but in terms of a pure off-ball guard, it’s basically Williams. As it stands, Williams will be the returning player that’s averaged the most minutes per game, and is probably the team’s best three point shooter. He’s been a bit streaky, but when he’s on, he can be a microwave. Whether he’s coming off the bench or starting, he’ll be an important piece of the puzzle next year.

Wing:

Keita Bates-Diop (Senior)

Andre Wesson (Sophomore)

It isn’t 100% clear if Bates-Diop will get a medical redshirt or not (Ohio State will seek one), so he might have a year of eligibility after next season. His ability to not only stretch the floor, but defend multiple positions, will be critical for the Buckeyes, and if they’re going to return to the NCAAs, they’ll need his rangy self at full health.

There’s some potential young talent here as well. Wesson hasn’t seen much time this season, but has showed his ability to be a defensive playmaker, and as he gets more comfortable with his shot, may help stretch the floor as well.

Forward:

Jae’Sean Tate (Senior)

Derek Funderburk (RS Freshman)

Tate will slide around depending on how the lineups are structured, but he’ll be back to fight for rebounds, hustle plays, and bulldog his way around the court. Tate may be a bit of a limited player because of his size and shooting, but as a contributing player, he’s been more than solid.

Funderburk was actually the highest ranked recruit of the 2016 class, but his positional fit isn’t exactly clear. If he’s able to be a significant contributor for next year, Ohio State’s bench will get substantially more athletic and dangerous.

Center:

Trevor Thompson (RS Senior)

Micah Potter (Sophomore)

Kaleb Wesson (Freshman)

David Bell (RS Senior)

This is another potentially interesting group. Thompson went through the NBA Draft process last year, and after a strong season, he also may decide to pursue a professional basketball career. Getting him back would be huge for Ohio State, as it would certainly give them great depth with the bigs.

Potter was a surprise starter this year, and brings shooting that the rest of this group lacks. He’s shown that he needs to get stronger and improve his defensive awareness this season, but that’s true of basically non-elite center prospect.

He’ll be joined by the top 2017 recruit Kaleb Wesson, who may also see time at center. Wesson has had an outstanding high school senior season, and could give Ohio State something they’ve lacked for a few years, an ability to manufacture baskets inside in the paint on a regular basis. It just might not happen immediately. Dave Bell rounds out the group, and he’s shown solid energy, but doesn’t look to be a likely big minutes contributor.

Can Potter, Wesson and Thompson potentially play together? If they’re all back and healthy, Ohio State could go super big and just bully teams down low. If Thompson leaves, the Buckeyes will be young, but will have options down low.

Is this good enough for a dramatic improvement? If either Lyle or Thompson leaves, perhaps Ohio State will pursue a graduate transfer (maybe at point guard) to help plug some roster holes. The Buckeyes look to have a very solid 2018 recruiting class, headlined by some of the best in Ohio, but if they struggle badly next season, that could call the future into question a little bit.

You can talk yourself into some improvement in the frontcourt, and if the Buckeyes can stay healthy and get something from Andre Wesson and Funderburk, there’s something there.

But it’s a harder sell than the past few years, especially since big jumps from players like Tate, Bates-Diop and Williams aren’t likely. Plus, the Buckeyes will need to replace Marc Loving’s production.

One thing is clear: Ending this season on a positive note would make the transition to next year a little bit easier.

LGHL Ohio State offers 4-star Notre Dame commit

The Buckeyes sent out a scholarship off to a blue-chip Fighting Irish commit.

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes continue to show their determination in making next year’s recruiting class as strong as this year’s. Starting the week off with a bang, the Buckeyes sent out a scholarship offer to an elite defensive tackle committed to Notre Dame yesterday.

Jayson Ademilola (Jersey City, NJ / St. Peters Prep) is a four-star defensive tackle and is the country’s No. 242 overall recruit, the No. 21 best DT and is the fifth best recruit in from New Jersey, all according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The 6-foot-3 and 283-pounder committed to Notre Dame in June 2016 along with his twin brother, Justin Ademilola. While Justin has yet to receive an offer, it would be surprising to see the Buckeyes offer just one, as the two are an assumed packaged deal.

Received an offer from The Ohio State University!! pic.twitter.com/a182OUmvJy

— Jayson k. Ademilola (@jaysonademilola) February 20, 2017

The brothers received a visit from Buckeye coaches in January during a two-day visit and the program is expecting to receive a visit from both this coming season.

Along with Notre Dame, Ohio State will be competing with some of the most highly respected programs in the country including Clemson, Michigan, Alabama, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oregon, Penn State and plenty of others.

Ohio State offers 4-star PG

The Ohio State football program isn’t the only one on campus hard at work on the recruiting trail, as Thad Matta is still trying to build on his 2017 recruiting class. Matta did so over the weekend when four-star point guard Mark Smith (Edwardsville, IL / Edwardsville).

Smith is the country’s No. 107 overall recruit in this year’s class and is the No. 25 PG, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The Buckeyes have two commits already in the class in center Kaleb Wesson and point guard Braxton Beverly. However, there is some concern that current Buckeye PG JaQuan Lyle will leave to play professionally. If that were to happen, the team would be in need of a third PG for depth, at the least, to go along with Beverly and CJ Jackson.

Currently, Northwestern is seen as the favorite to land Smith, but the Ohio State offer appears to have excited Smith. The PG spoke with Alex Gleitman of Rivals.com and said he had been waiting on the offer and has reason to believe he could receive ample playing time.

While it is uncertain when Smith will officially decide, the Buckeyes definitely are in play. Expect Smith to wait until the signing period in April before making a decision.

The Buckeyes ran away with a win against the No. 2 team in the country on senior night.

In a battle for supremacy in the Big Ten conference, the Ohio State women’s basketball team claimed its most complete win of the season against Maryland, the second-ranked team in the country, 98-87 on Monday night at Value City Arena in Columbus.

The Buckeyes are now in the driver’s seat for the conference regular season title, tied with the Terrapins at 14-1 in Big Ten play. The scarlet and gray also ran their winning streak to 10 games while breaking Maryland’s 14-game streak. The Terps had not lost in 2017 until this one.

Kelsey Mitchell notched her ninth consecutive game with at least 20 points, filling it up to the tune of 31 to go along with four rebounds and six assists in the biggest game of the year for Ohio State. Alexa Hart, Sierra Calhoun, and Linnae Harper were also in double figures.

On top of being such a crucial game to the conference picture, it was also senior night for the scarlet and gray. The squad’s lone senior, Shayla Cooper, was honored before the game and then turned in a memorable performance, scoring 20 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and dishing out five dimes.

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Brionna Jones led the Terps, scoring 29 and 21, respectively. Destiny Slocum added 15 as well.

Both sides came out with nerves, combining to commit a handful of turnovers in the game’s first three minutes. Maryland got Jones and Walker-Kimbrough going, with the pair scoring the Terps’ first 16 points. Ohio State’s Cooper had the hot hand as well, scoring seven in the early going to keep the Buckeyes in contact, trailing 16-14 at the midway point in the first quarter.

Ohio State used 77.8 percent shooting (14-for-18) and Mitchell’s ability to get out in transition to make a 20-5 run. After her third layup on the run and her second make from beyond the arc in the frame, Maryland was forced to call a timeout suddenly trailing 30-19.

The Buckeyes made 12 straight shots from the field, with Mitchell and Cooper combining to score 25 points, and took a 35-22 lead after the a frenetic first ten minutes. Jones and Walker-Kimbrough scored 19 of the Terrapins’ points.

As scorching as Ohio State finished the first, though, it struggled to start the second. The Buckeyes turned the ball over on four consecutive possessions and committed four fouls in the first couple minutes of play.

Walker-Kimbrough knocked down her third triple of the game, and Kristen Confroy hit her first, but threes by Sierra Calhoun and Kiara Lewis kept the advantage at 45-32.

The frenetic pace continued, but both teams went cold, each experiencing a three-minute field goal drought. Ohio State turned the ball over seven times in the period, but Maryland coughed it up five, and the Buckeyes took a 49-40 lead into halftime.

Mitchell led all scorers with 15 points, but all of those came in the first quarter. Cooper added 12 of her own, and a team-high four rebounds. Both Jones and Walker-Kimbrough scored 13 for Maryland. Jones also led the Terps with five boards and three assists.

Out of the locker room, Maryland made four straight shots, punctuated by a driving layup from Destiny Slocum. But Ohio State withstood the attack, as Calhoun and Cooper both popped threes and Mitchell got to the rim for a layup. At the midway point of the third quarter, an Alexa Hart bucket gave the Buckeyes a 64-50 lead.

It was inevitable that the Terps would continue to make runs, and after the media timeout, they went on a 14-0 run that cut the deficit to 68-66. Slocum hit a pair of threes, Walker-Kimbrough completed an and-one, Confroy made a triple of her own, and Walker-Kimbrough got a driving layup, putting Ohio State back on its heels. The Buckeyes went scoreless for the last 3:38 of the quarter.

A layup by Lewis to start the fourth put an end to the drought, and the teams spent the first four minutes trading hoops. Maryland’s dominance on the glass was evident, though. Led by Jones, the Terrapins won the second chance points battle 29-5 and on the offensive boards 20-4 for the game.

With five minutes remaining in the game, Ohio State’s lead was still four points, 80-76, but a quick 6-0 burst pushed the lead back out to double digits with three minutes to play. The run was punctuated by a Hart fall away jumper as the shot clock expired that had head coach Kevin McGuff halfway out onto the court.

The Terps employed the “Hack-A-Hart” strategy, fouling the Buckeye junior intentionally with the score 90-84. Hart calmly knocked down both shots from the charity stripe, then went to the other end and swatted a shot. Free throws down the stretch iced the victory, running Ohio State’s regular season winning streak against Maryland to three games dating back to last season.

The Buckeyes will conclude the regular season schedule on Sunday in Piscataway, taking on Rutgers at 3:00 p.m. ET. The game will air live on ESPN2 against a Scarlet Knights squad that finds itself near the Big Ten cellar.

Still developed here.

“With two first-round picks this year, the Titans can be big movers to acquire more assets. Moving down a few picks in the top 10 could allow the Titans to get either the first wide receiver or cornerback, or go after an elite coverage safety like [Malik] Hooker.”

-Dan Kadar, SB Nation

It’s no secret that Urban Meyer and Ohio State football have turned having monster NFL Draft classes into a regular occurrence. An arguably bigger recruiting tool than even winning a national championship, OSU should be well on track to render all kinds of fire-emoji-worthy social media “edits” (think flyers) this upcoming late April.

SBNation.com’s Dan Kadar likes the Buckeyes to sport two top 10 picks this year with superstud safety Malik Hooker potentially going No. 8 overall and secondary mate corner Marshon Lattimore pegged to go two spots after.

Fellow corner Gareon Conley, who some teams reportedly have higher on their draft boards than Lattimore, is also projected to go in the first round by Kadar. Fifth place in the Heisman Trophy voting Michigan linebacker/safety Jabrill Peppers is pegged to go No. 19 in Kadar’s latest.

Just because Ohio State men’s basketball’s turned into a near hopeless product doesn’t mean there isn’t a men’s team in Columbus worth emotionally investing in.

The men’s lacrosse team’s off to a hot start at 3-0, having outlasted UMass, 8-7, over the weekend.

No. 20 for the second straight week, the men’s lax Bucks have Jacksonville in Columbus this coming Saturday before traveling to Milwaukee to face Marquette the following Friday.

It’ll be hard for Nick Myers’ Buckeyes to not look too far ahead; they’ve got a date with No. 1 Denver set for Saturday, March 19.

Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett’s Heisman odds went from 6/1 less than a month ago to 12/1 today because ... ?

It’s hard to get too excited either way, given that his previous odds were mostly predicated on the idea that new QB coach Ryan Day (he of saving Colin Kaepernick’s career fame) and co-offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson represented a possible late-in-college-career renaissance for the quarterback who struggled to maintain much consistency passing the past two seasons.

Though you’d have to be of a particularly pessimistic predisposition to not think Wilson’s offense won’t breath new life into an OSU offensive depth chart that desperately needs it, it’s hard to know for certain how that specifically impacts Barrett’s star.

Given that Barrett finished in the same place in voting the aforementioned Peppers did three short years ago, it’s not hard to imagine a return to form if everything goes according to plan. Whether or not it’s Heisman good, we’ll have to wait and see.
