Possibly our best TE ever. Or certainly, our best blocking TE ever. Not sure if he ever caught a pass though as a Buckeye. Archie won two Heisman trophies running behind this guy. I can still remember when he moved prior to the snap on third down inside the one yard line against USC in the Rose Bowl and pushed us back 5 yards. Woody blew up and had a "megaton" on the sidelines right in front of the cameras.

Ohio State put together a near-flawless performance in taking down one of the top teams in the country.

After Ohio State baseball was assaulted by Utah in game one of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge in Surprise, Arizona on Thursday, head coach Greg Beals said the Buckeyes “didn’t have the proper energy, the proper approach, or the proper readiness on game day.” On Friday afternoon against an Oregon State squad ranked fifth in the nation according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, the scarlet and gray responded with their best performance of the young season, earning a 6-1 victory.

Redshirt junior Yianni Pavlopoulos bounced back from getting roughed up in his first start of the season with a six shutouts innings. The team’s closer a season ago, Pavlopoulos scattered just three hits, walked three, and struck out four against what is considered the most lethal lineup in the Pac-12.

Seth Kinker came out of the bullpen and tossed three innings for the save, allowing a run on two hits, walking one and striking out one.

Brady Cherry hit his second home run of the season and drove in a pair as part of a 2-for-4 day, while Tre Gantt, Noah McGowan, Tyler Cowles, Zach Ratcliff, and Jacob Barnwell all had multi-hit games as well.

The Beavers sent sophomore Bryce Fehmel to the mound coming off a solid first start of the season a week ago. The right-hander lasted five innings in this one, allowing three runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking one in taking the loss.

Ohio State got on the board in the top of the first thanks to leadoff man Gantt’s double, a single by McGowan, and an errant pickoff attempt by Fehmel. As the throw got away at first, Gantt trotted home for an early 1-0 lead.

Pavlopoulos and Fehmel kept things pretty quiet for the next few innings, but the Buckeyes extended their lead in the top of the fifth. Ratcliff managed an infield single off Fehmel’s glove to lead things off and Cherry hit the first pitch of his at-bat out of the yard to left. The team that had looked so mightily overmatched the night before now had a 3-0 lead against one of the top teams in the country.

Another run was tacked on in the seventh against Oregon State relievers Tommy Paul and Brandon Eisert. Shea Murray led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Barnwell. After Gantt struck out, both Jalen Washington and McGowan were hit by pitches by Paul to load the bases. For Washington, it already marked the fifth HBP of the season, causing the Buckeye baseball twitter account to reminisce about last year’s co-captain Nick Sergakis.

After the Beavers went to Eisert, an infield hit by Cowles brought Murray plateward and gave the Buckeyes a 4-0 advantage.

Oregon State fought back, though, just as would be expected from a team with aspirations of Omaha. In the bottom of the seventh, Kinker relieved Pavlopoulos after 85 pitches, and after one quick out, gave up a single and a double to allow the Beavers onto the scoreboard. The Ohio State relief ace didn’t break, though, rolling a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning and limit the damage.

The Buckeyes got that run back and one more in the top of the ninth, adding a little extra insurance. Barnwell singled up the middle to lead off and advanced to second on a Gantt sacrifice bunt. After Washington was hit by yet another pitch, McGowan sent a bouncing ball to short that seemed a tailor-made double play, but the throw from Christian Donahue at second went awry and Barnwell scored.

Cowles stepped up and delivered his second run-scoring single of the game, pushing the lead to a much more comfortable 6-1.

Kinker took it from there, finishing out what was one of the team’s biggest upset victories in the Beals era.

Ohio State will get a rematch with Utah on Saturday night. The game is scheduled to get underway at 9:30 p.m. ET, and will feature Ryan Feltner on the bump for the Buckeyes against the Utes’ Riley Ottesen.

Ohio State volleyball has taken the country by storm. Last year, they took down UCLA and BYU en route to national championship. This year, the Buckeyes have maintained the momentum and are riding a 38-match win streak.

This weekend the No.1 Buckeyes travel to Phoenix to take on Grand Canyon University. The trip to the desert will be a twofer, as the Bucks play the Antelopes on Friday and Sunday. More importantly, OSU has a chance to pull away in the MIVA (conference) standings. Buckeye head coach Pete Hanson has led the defending national champions to a 6-0 mark in the conference, however, the ‘Lopes are sitting at 5-1 in the MIVA—and can take control of the conference with a series sweep.

While it may seem doable on paper, beating the Buckeyes is a tall task to ask. The last time Ohio State dropped a match was on Feb. 6, 2016, and since then, the Bucks have taken 84 percent of sets. Against GCU, OSU has an all-time record of 13-2, including a 5-1 record on the Antelopes home court. If the Buckeyes can win both games in Phoenix, then they would become just the sixth team in Div I-II to have a win streak crossover the 40-win plateau.

As we creep closer and closer to the NFL Draft, the realization that some of the talent on Ohio State’s playoff team last year will, in fact, not be coming back. On the receiving end, Curtis Samuel, Dontre Wilson and Noah Brown have declared their entrance in the pursuit of being the next professional football star. That means there will need to be new stars rise up for the Buckeyes offense for 2017.

That call may be answered by Austin Mack and Binjimen Victor. Ari Wasserman of cleveland.com wrote about the burning question that is Ohio State’s depth at WR.

For Mack, he came to OSU in 2016 after being graded as a four-star wide out in high school. As a freshman, Mack received a bevy of compliments from the coaching staff, which in turned create some noise for him to potentially break into a starting WR role, according to the article from Wasserman. Victor, while not getting the same kind of attention as Mack in the early going, began to pick things up as the season progressed. The culmination for Victor last season was breaking off a 21-yard reception against Clemson in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.

While the Buckeyes have established receivers in Parris Campbell, K.J. Hill and Terry McLaurin, it wouldn’t hurt to have a breakout sensation in either Mack or Victor for the 2017 campaign.

Again, we focus on OSU football. Tom Dienhart at BTN wrote a preview on Meyer’s machine in Columbus, Ohio, and concluded three things the Buckeyes need to watch out for in the spring.

First, Dienhart pinpointed on the receiving core. Already, in Wasserman’s piece in cleveland.com, the topic of Buckeye pass catchers were talked about. However, Dienhart touched on two more, equally important topics: the secondary and chemistry.

Once again, the OSU secondary has been purged by the lures of the NFL Draft. While the leap is made (and stars are born), the Buckeyes are left having to refill the cupboard with A1 talent. So far, that hasn’t been a problem, but filling shoes of Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker and Gareon Conley isn’t an easy task.

On chemistry, Dienhart made a good point that the coaching staff is going to need to be on the same page, considering Tim Beck and Ed Warriner have departed the program. The new additions of Bill Davis and Ryan Day bring an NFL mindset to an elite college program, but adjustments, like always, will need to be made in order to make the OSU football program a fine-tuned machine.

The first peak at the state of the football team will be at the spring game on April 15.

The defensive line is loaded. But don’t forget about Bosa.

Nick Bosa came to Columbus with more hype than any other Buckeyes defensive end in recent memory. Sure, his older brother Joey was plenty hyped himself as a four-star recruit, but Nick had to deal with both a five-star distinction and the fact that his brother was the best defensive player on Ohio State’s national championship team.

As it turned out, Nick wouldn’t disappoint. He played immediately and became a vital part of this season’s edition of the rushmen package. Nick didn’t quite put up the same numbers as his brother did as a freshman, but he made plenty of big plays along the way. He recorded sacks against Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan on his way to being named a first-team ESPN Freshman All-American.

All the key contributors from the defensive line will return in 2017, but it’s hard to imagine that Bosa won’t find his way onto the field more often. Players often mature quickly between their freshman and sophomore seasons, as they have an entire off-season with elite-level coaching and conditioning. It’s rare that a player of Bosa’s talent could potentially not start, but one look at his freshman year production compared to six of Ohio State’s finest defensive linemen during their first season (denoted by a player recording at least 10 tackles in a season) shows just how special Bosa could be:



Of the six comparables, only Bosa, Johnathan Hankins, Cameron Heyward and Will Smith were able to make a significant impact as a true freshman. While Nick is behind Joey in all three categories, he’s actually ahead of the average stat-line produced by this star-studded pack. Nick’s five sacks are particularly encouraging, as they’re two more than any of the comparables that have a different Mom and Dad than he does.

If we took the average increase of production from this player group and applied it to Nick, we would expect him to record 50 tackles, 12 TFLs and eight sacks as a sophomore. Obviously it’s a tough to assume Nick will follow in the footsteps as six top-three round NFL draft picks, but his ability to both impact the run game and rush the passer makes him a rare specimen who will find a way to wreck havoc this fall.

Meyer was referring to Bosa’s performance during the Buckeyes’ win over Indiana. He’d played well against Bowling Green, Oklahoma and Rutgers, but he truly started making some impact plays against new-Buckeye Offensive Coordinator Kevin Wilson’s offense.

With a quick first step and the type of hand power that can prove to be very destructive, Bosa is very tough to run the ball away from. He has a constant motor and is always willing to chase down plays to the other side of the field. Bosa proved against Indiana that failing to account for him in the run game is a fool’s task:


While it may seem strange, some of the nation’s top-defensive players are at their worst when team’s run the ball directly at them. Sometimes player’s reliance on speed and quickness enables them to thrive as they run down plays from the weak side, but they struggle when teams play physical football and force the player to stand up to direct blocking.

Bosa’s contributions this season varied, but he was always on the field for obvious third-down passes, as well as tough short-yardage runs. Essentially a “3 and D” defensive lineman, Bosa proved against Indiana that he is more than capable of holding his own at the point of attack:


The ability to simply drive a linemen straight back into the opponent’s backfield is invaluable. Bosa’s ability use his brute strength is only possible thanks to his great technique, as he consistently gets his hands inside of his opponent and is always driving his feet.

“I didn’t really listen to the hype too much...Coach J made it really easy for me to transition. He knew that there was going to be some pressure, but I just worked with him and kept getting better and my teammates helped me get acclimated.” - Nick Bosa


Part of what made Joey Bosa so good was his ability to impact games from both defensive tackle and defensive end. Ohio State’s third-best pass rusher in 2015 was Sam Hubbard, so Bosa’s ability to bump inside to defensive tackle enabled the Buckeyes to debut their rushmen package and really get after the quarterback.

It didn’t take long for the Buckeyes to display a similar strategy with Nick:


Bosa once again displays great technique, as he is able to work his hands free and rip past the guard into the quarterback. He has the ability to bull rush offensive lineman straight back when necessary, but deploying moves like he did in the above video is what makes him such a versatile and disruptive pass rusher.

At 6’4 260 lbs, Bosa is a defensive end who can play defensive tackle, not the other way around. His strength enables him to produce against the interior of an offensive line, but the same strength allows him to dominate against overmatched tackles and tight ends on the outside. Like his brother, Bosa doesn’t necessarily have the type of elite bend that will make scouts gush, but he makes up for it with his technique and more than enough quickness to give plenty of offensive tackles fits:


Keep in mind that Ohio State hasn’t blitzed in any of the above videos. The Buckeyes secondary members may get all the press, but the Ohio State defense line’s ability to generate pressure with just three or four rushers is what made last year’s defense so special. Offenses can only keep so many players in to block, so what happens when all four defensive lineman are good enough to demand double teams on every play? Of course not every Ohio State player demands the same level of attention, but Nick Bosa is one of them.

For Bosa to start next season will require either reigning Big Ten defensive lineman of the year Tyquan Lewis or Sam Hubbard to sit. The coaches could decide to move Bosa to defensive tackle in place of Michael Hill or Tracy Sprinkle, but it really doesn’t matter if he eventually snags a starting position or not. Now a more than a full season removed from tearing his ACL as a high school senior, Nick Bosa has the ability and opportunity to take games over as a Sophomore. Don’t expect him to give the coaches much of a reason to take plays off.

In the coming days, will there be another 2018 commit for the Buckeyes?

Ohio State is only two months into the 2017 calendar, that meaning they’re truly about a month into their sole focus being on the 2018 and 2019 recruiting classes. However, the Buckeye coaching staff has been setting record pace on the recruiting trail. Offering one to two prospects each day that passes, or so it seems, Urban Meyer and the rest of his staff have made it crystal clear that the 2018 class has to keep pace with the incredible talent that has been brought to Columbus, Ohio year in and year out in Meyer’s short tenure as the head coach.

Gill ready to announce


Ohio State’s 2018 class may be “small” in size for right now, but the commits in the class prove that quality over quantity is truly something the Buckeyes believe in. However, with a smaller 2017 class, Meyer and Ohio State may be able to stockpile in 2018—to an extent.

Last night, one target that the Buckeyes are hard after, local product Jaelen Gill announced via his Twitter that his recruitment would be coming to an end, as he is set to announce his college decision on March 1 at his high school, Westerville South.


Ranked as Ohio’s second best prospect and the third best all-purpose back in the 2018 class, Gill is a high four-star, according to 247sports, and is very deserving of more than his 30 scholarship offers. The 6-foot-, 185-pound athlete is just over a week away from his big decision and the Buckeyes are hoping that they are the ones winning his pledge. Time will tell, but the Buckeyes may be well on their way to their fourth commit in the 2018 class, but more importantly, solidifying the all around Ohio’s borders.

Auburn legacy earns OSU offer


When it comes to the quarterback position for the Buckeyes, it’s no secret at all that they are absolutely loaded. With J.T. Barrett, Joe Burrow, Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell already in Columbus, and 2018 Georgia QB prospect Emory Jones currently committed to Ohio State, it’s easy to believe that the Buckeyes are set with their signal callers for years to come.

As we know with the Buckeyes, when one signs, the next potential guy for the job is being searched for on the daily. On Wednesday night, the latest QB prospect to see an offer from Ohio State is Alabama native, Bo Nix. A 6-foot-1, 180-pounder, Nix currently holds ten scholarship offers from the likes of Florida State, Auburn, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Ole Miss and Tennessee.


While it’s still very early in the recruiting process for Nix, this recruitment for many is over before it even starts. Why? Nix is the son of former Auburn quarterback, Patrick Nix. An Auburn legacy, it seems almost certain that Bo would follow in his father’s footsteps especially when it’s at the same position. There’s a long one to go in the recruitment, but will it really matter? As always: Time will only tell.

An update on a little delay


While 2018 receivers are a story of themselves as it is, 2019 is also seeing some serious attention from the Buckeyes for the receiver position. One of the prospects hearing the most from receivers coach Zach Smith and Meyer is Ellenwood, Ga. prospect, Jadon Haselwood.

The 6-foot-3 190-pound deep threat has been a hot topic in Ohio State recruiting as of late and fortunately for the Buckeyes, he’ll be in Columbus, Ohio next weekend. Originally, Jadon was scheduled to visit Ohio State tomorrow and for the remainder of the weekend, but made a quick change of plans Wednesday night as he announced via his Twitter account that he would in fact be visiting Alabama instead.


Reasoning behind the change in visit plans for Jadon is due to Meyer being out of town this weekend. Fortunately, Meyer will be back in town soon and Haselwood will then make the trip north to Ohio. The home state Georgia Bulldogs and Ohio State are the only two schools on the 247sports crystal ball predictions, but the 2019 star is sure to draw attention from nearly every top program in the counter with his abilities.

Michigan WR wants to hear from OSU


As mentioned earlier, the 2018 class is sure to see some incredible talent at receiver. With in-state Ohio players being some of the top guys in the nation and the Buckeyes being a national presence, the Buckeyes and Zach Smith are going to have their pick at some of the best.

One receiver that would love to hear from Ohio State is Michigan native, Justin Thomas. Thomas, a current high school junior that attends Walled Lake Western high school, competed in Michigan’s division 2 state championship game against Detroit King in 2016. Detroit King is a place OSU knows well, as they actively recruited Donnie Corley from there in 2016.

For Justin, standing at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, he has not only the size, but the skill as well to line up out wide and in the slot.


As a junior, Thomas showed that he was a true deep threat, as he played both offense and defense for the Warriors; as a pass-catcher, Thomas reeled in 37 passes for 640 yards and 7 touchdowns. Currently, Thomas is seeing interest from multiple MAC Conference schools such as Western Michigan and Toledo to name a few, but if Ohio State were to come knocking at the door, it would be the one he’s been waiting for.

Thomas had this to say to Land-Grant Holy Land about the Buckeyes football program, “I’ve always dreamed of playing for Ohio State and I want to win a National Championship. Ohio State has [sic] rich tradition with the best coaches and players, and I want to be a part of that culture.”

With a successful senior season, the sky’s the limit for one of Michigan’s top receivers.

Ohio State snapped a three-game losing streak with the upset over Wisconsin at Value City Arena.

Ohio State came out of the gates strong, using a 9-0 run midway through the first half to open up a 22-12 lead. Early on C.J. Jackson and Jae’Sean Tate did most of the damage for the Buckeyes, with Jackson scoring nine of Ohio State’s first 22 points, and Tate racking up seven points and eight rebounds in the first 12 minutes of the half.

Both Ohio State and Wisconsin saw their shots fall from distance early, but the big difference which allowed the Buckeyes to open up an early lead is they were able to make their shots from inside the arc. Wisconsin finished the first half with nine field goals, seven of them coming from three-point range. On the other side, Ohio State shot 50% from the field, and went into the half with a 44-31 lead.

Jae’Sean Tate was the star of the first half for Ohio State, finishing the first 20 minutes with 13 points and 10 rebounds. C.J. Jackson had nine early points for the Buckeyes, while dishing out three assists and adding three steals. Micah Potter added five points and four rebounds off the bench for Ohio State.

Had it not been for Bronson Koenig, Wisconsin might have found themselves facing a bigger deficit at halftime. The senior hit four three-pointers in the first half, finishing with 14 points. Vitto Brown was the second-leading scorer for Wisconsin in the first half, scoring six points. Along with their poor shooting from the field, Wisconsin was dominated on the boards, as Ohio State outrebounded the Badgers 23-12 in the first half.

Wisconsin looked like they might have a little something for Ohio State in the middle of the second half, cutting the lead to nine, mostly behind some more hot shooting from Koenig. But Ohio State put an end to that threat behind three-pointers from JaQuan Lyle and Jackson to restore the lead to 15 points.

Even a technical foul on Jae’Sean Tate, which gave the junior four fouls with about eight minutes to go couldn’t slow Ohio State’s momentum. Not only did Jackson’s hot shooting from the first half roll over to the second half, but Ohio State continued to get strong contributions from their bench in the final 20 minutes. After Potter set the tone with his performance in the first half of the bench, JaQuan Lyle started to fill up the stat sheet in the second half. Lyle recorded his highest scoring output of the month, finishing with 17 points. Lyle did most of his damage at the foul line, hitting all 10 of his free throw attempts.

Wisconsin got some late buckets to make the final score look a little closer than the game actually was. Koenig finished with 27 points, while D’Mitrik Trice was the only other Badger in double-figures, scoring 14 points off the bench. Ohio State did a tremendous job of keeping Ethan Happ in check, limiting the sophomore to four points and six rebounds.

C.J. Jackson finished as Ohio State’s leading scoring, hitting nine points in each half to finish with 18 points. After a big first half, Jae’Sean Tate was pretty quiet in the second half, finishing with 15 points and 12 rebounds. A week after Tate became the 26th Buckeye to rack up 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, Marc Loving became the 27th Ohio State player to hit those milestones, with the senior recording 10 points and five rebounds in the victory.

After hitting 50% of their field goal attempts in tonight’s victory, Ohio State will hope their hot shooting will carry over to Tuesday night, when the Buckeyes hit the road to take on Penn State. Following Tuesday’s matchup against the Nittany Lions, Ohio State will close out the regular season at home next Sunday against Indiana.

3 things we learned:


1. When his career is over, Jae’Sean Tate will likely go down as one of the most underappreciated players in the history of Ohio State basketball. Sure, Tate has plenty of fanfare now, but imagine if he played on some of Ohio State’s more successful teams. Last week Tate became the 26th Buckeye to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds, and all he did tonight was register a double-double in the first half.

The junior from Pickerington to help this Ohio State team be successful, but some things are just out of Tate’s control. His strong play has been overshadowed by things like transfers, other players underachieving, and the Buckeyes struggling to find wins over the last few years. While many will try and forget this season of Ohio State basketball, at least the play of Tate will be one area that will be worth remembering. Luckily for Buckeye fans one thing to be optimistic for next season about is that Tate should be back for his senior season, where he can finish off a very strong career.

2. This season will be remembered as a season of “what ifs” for the Buckeyes. What if Keita Bates-Diop hadn’t been lost for the year earlier in the season? What if the Buckeyes hadn’t lost so many close games? What if the Buckeyes got more consistent play from some of their key players? Things would be a lot different right now, and there might not be rumblings that Thad Matta’s time in Columbus might end sooner rather than later.

Ohio State has lost seven games by six points or less this year. Even if Ohio State wins three or four of those games, the Buckeyes still might be on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Who knows how the team would have responded if Ohio State could have won big games against Virginia, Purdue, and Northwestern this year. Even with the win tonight, Ohio State is going to have to be perfect the rest of the year if they want to insert themselves in the NCAA Tournament conversation. Instead Ohio State is looking at a second straight trip to the NIT.

3. Ohio State has to be glad they won’t see Bronson Koenig again. At least this is the last scheduled time the Buckeyes will see Koenig, but it is possible the two teams could meet up in the Big Ten Tournament. In the first meeting with Ohio State, Koenig hit five three-pointers and finished with 21 points in Wisconsin’s blowout win last month over the Buckeyes in Madison.

With his effort tonight, Koenig has scored at least 13 points in each of the last four meetings with Ohio State. Koenig not only became Wisconsin’s all-time leader in three-pointers made, but with his effort tonight from long range against the Buckeyes, the senior has now hit at least a trio of three-pointers in each of Wisconsin’s last four games against Ohio State. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Koenig single-handedly win Wisconsin a game or two in March with his ability to hit the three-pointer, at least it likely won’t come at the expense of Ohio State.

Ohio State ran into a freight train in game one of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge.

The beginning of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge was not kind to the Ohio State baseball team, as the Buckeyes took a 12-0 whooping from Utah on Thursday night in Surprise, Arizona.

Ohio State now stands 2-3 on the young season, and has three games left in the desert.

As a team, the Buckeyes managed just five hits, with Jalen Washington notching two for his third multi-hit game of 2017. Meanwhile, the Utes banged out 16 hits, six of which went for extra bases, as they moved to 3-1 on the year.

Starting pitching Adam Niemeyer had his struggles, which were compounded by faulty defense. In four innings of work, the redshirt junior righty allowed eight runs, but just four of them were earned thanks to three errors committed behind him.

Sophomore left-hander Connor Curlis made his 2017 debut in relief and didn’t fare much better. The Findlay, Ohio native allowed four runs on seven hits in his four innings pitched, striking out three and walking one.

Utah freshman lefty Jacob Rebar made his first collegiate start and was brilliant, tossing 5.2 shutout innings, yielding just three hits, striking out three, and walking one.

Oliver Dunn drove in four runs for the defending Pac-12 champs, while Dallas Carroll, Josh Rose, and Kyle Hoffman each had a pair of RBIs.

In the top of the first, both Tre Gantt and Washington singled at the top of the order, but Gantt was thrown out attempting to steal second and Washington was picked off at first. Utah then capitalized on another Ohio State mistake in the bottom half of the inning to score the game’s first run.

Leadoff man DaShawn Keirsey singled off Niemeyer and then advanced to second on a throwing error by catcher Jacob Barnwell. Two groundouts later, he crossed the plate.

In the bottom of the second, the Utes took advantage of another miscue. Chandler Anderson reached on an error by Washington at short, stole second, and after a base hit by Zack Moeller, scored on a single by Hoffman for a 2-0 lead.

Utah wasn’t done, either, scoring four more times in the frame. With Moeller and Hoffman on, Keirsey to load the bases and Dunn doubled down the line in left, clearing the bases. A single two batters later by Hunter Simmons brought Dunn plateward and extended the lead to six.

Niemeyer managed to escape a bases loaded jam without damage in the third, but the Buckeye bats were held silent by Rebar, who set down 14 batters in a row after issuing a first inning walk to Tyler Cowles.

Sloppy play bit Ohio State once again in the bottom of the fourth. After two quick outs, Washington committed his second error of the game, which allowed Simmons to reach base and extend the inning. Rose followed that up by launching a home run over the fence in right field, pushing the advantage to 8-0.

Curlis relieved Niemeyer in the fifth, but the Utes didn’t seem to notice and just kept up the onslaught. Anderson singled to lead things off, Moeller walked, and Hoffman doubled into the gap in left-center to bring Anderson around. Dunn executed a squeeze bunt to score Moeller and send Hoffman to third, which was followed by a Carroll RBI double to left-center, making it 11-0.

A Barnwell double down the left field line with one out in the top of the sixth was the first base runner for the Buckeyes since that Cowles walk in the first. It was Barnwell’s first hit of the season after starting out 0-for-9 at the plate. He advanced to third on a Gantt groundout, but was stranded there.

In the bottom half, Utah tacked on another to take a 12-0 lead. With two outs, Anderson legged out an infield hit, then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Curlis. Moeller drove him in with a double to center.

Noah McGowan led off the seventh for Ohio State with a single. After Cowles and Bo Coolen struck out, freshman Connor Pohl walked in his first collegiate plate appearance, and Brady Cherry walked as well to load the bases. Once again, though, the Buckeyes couldn’t cash in, as Shea Murray struck out to leave them loaded.

Ohio State wouldn’t threaten again, as Chase Bauerle, Trenton Stoltz, and Hunter Rodriguez combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The scarlet and gray will take the field again on Friday, this time matching up with Oregon State, the fifth-ranked team in the country. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET at Surprise Stadium.
