Next season’s title race may feel a lot like 2016’s.

The early advanced stats projections have Ohio State and (surprise) Alabama leading the race for the 2017 playoff. Bill’s S&P+ projections has Ohio State at second and ESPN’s FPI puts the Buckeyes on top.

Earlier we looked at exactly what went in to Ohio State’s S&P+ projections — now we’ll look at why that ranking is justified both within the Big Ten and compared to the other top playoff contenders.

The Big Ten overall

Four teams have clearly separated themselves from the rest — Wisconsin, Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State rank in the top-11 of the Projected S&P+, while six teams rank between 37th and 48th, and then the bottom rung of Maryland, Illinois, Purdue, and Rutgers all rank 72nd or worse.

The Big Ten is incredibly stratified, with clear delineations between the tiers. The top tier averages 8th, the second tier averages 43rd, and the bottom tier averages 84th.

But within the top tier, the S&P+ margins (the far-right column) show how much higher Ohio State’s projected rating is than the others in the top tier. At 26th, the difference between Ohio State and eighth-ranked Penn State (2nd in the Big Ten) is 4.2, which is more than the difference between Penn State and Wisconsin (2.8).

Ohio State’s Big Ten schedule includes four mid-tier teams, three lower-tier teams, and two top-tier teams in Penn State and Michigan.

2017 B1G Race

B1G_Proj_2017.png

So the Big Ten race is likely between the four teams in the chart above. I created separate bars for the three variables that go in to the projected S&P+ ratings — weighted 5-year S&P+, returning production (measured by returning starters x last year’s S&P+ performance on both sides of the ball), and a rolling recruiting measure. This allows you to see the relative strengths and weaknesses of each team heading in to the 2017 season (and obviously, since these are ratings, it’s better to have shorter bars!).

Ohio State ranks in the top-3 in the country in all three categories, which justifies their second-overall 2017 projected S&P+ ranking.

The other three teams all have one category they’re particularly strong in, then two others were they are just solid. For Penn State, they bring extremely high returning production and then decent recruiting. It’s hard to imagine the Nittany Lions performing much worse than they did last year, with Trace McSorley and Saquon Barkley both returning.

Michigan is strongest in recruiting, which should help offset some of their personnel losses. The Michigan defense, their inarguable strength in 2016, loses most of their secondary and key pieces along the defensive line. They also lose experienced wide receivers and their starting running back. Ohio State was able to weather incredible personnel losses last year because of the talent they have stockpiled. It’s unclear whether Jim Harbaugh has accumulated enough talent in Ann Arbor to do the same.

Finally, Wisconsin continues to defy expectations. Their recruiting puts them squarely in the Big Ten’s mid-tier, but their on-field performance and returning experience should ensure there’s not much of a dropoff from 2016. Ohio State misses the Badgers during the regular season, so it will take a Big Ten title game matchup for the Buckeyes to worry too much about the Badgers.

Despite a comeback effort, Ohio State baseball dropped a close one.

Ohio State baseball could have given up on Saturday night against Utah. After getting blasted 12-0 by the Utes on Thursday, the Buckeyes found themselves in a deep hole once again on Saturday night at the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge in Surprise, Arizona.

Though they didn’t ultimately pull off the comeback, falling 6-4, head coach Greg Beals saw more fight from his team in this one than perhaps any other game thus far in the young season.

With one game remaining in the weekend, Ohio State now stands 3-4 on the year.

The Utes sent sophomore Riley Ottesen to the mound, and he was as good as advertised. A draft-eligible righty with a fastball that can touch the mid-90s on the radar gun, Ottesen went six innings, allowing just an unearned run on three hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Freshman catcher Alex Isola was one of six Utah hitters with a multi-hit game, driving in a pair of runs in the winning effort.

For the second straight start, sophomore Ryan Feltner had his difficulties for the Buckeyes. The right-hander allowed five runs, four of them earned, on eight hits in lasting just 4.2 innings. Feltner struck out one batter, walked two, and had a wild pitch, the fourth he’s uncorked in 10.1 innings of work in 2017 thus far.

Kyle Michalik continued his lights-out start to the season out of the bullpen, though, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. The side-winding redshirt junior righty has now gone three appearances without allowing a run.

The offensive bright spots for Ohio State were few and far between, but junior center fielder and leadoff man Tre’ Gantt continued a solid start to the 2017 campaign. The Fishers, Indiana native went 2-for-5 at the plate, doubling, scoring a run, and stealing a base. Redshirt senior designated hitter Zach Ratcliff also contributed a pair of hits.

Just as was the case in Thursday’s game, defensive sloppiness from Ohio State led to an early deficit. DaShawn Keirsey reached on a throwing error by third baseman Brady Cherry to lead off Utah’s first inning. After a fielder’s choice moved him to second, Dallas Carroll singled him home, and when the throw went to the plate, ended up on second base. As a result, Carroll came around to score when Hunter Simmons followed with a single, making it a 2-0 game.

Unlike Thursday, though, the Buckeyes responded. Gantt led off with a single, stole second base, and advanced to third when the throw from Isola went awry. Jalen Washington sent a fly ball to right field to bring Gantt plateward and cut the deficit in half.

Utah continued its assault on Ohio State pitching in the fourth, though, plating two more runs off Feltner. Chandler Anderson and Isola doubled back-to-back for the first of them, and after advancing to third on the Buckeyes’ third error of the game, Isola came home on a Keirsey single.

The Utes put another run on the board in the fifth, when a leadoff walk to Josh Rose paid dividends. After Feltner retired a pair, Isola notched a single to score Rose from second. A double by Ellis Kelly put two runners in scoring position with two outs and ended Feltner’s night after 92 pitches. Joe Stoll relieved, and the lefty got out of the jam with a Keirsey fly out to center.

Ottesen meanwhile was on a roll. After Gantt’s single to lead off the in the first, the Highland, Utah native set down 11 in a row and 15 of 17 in getting through five innings in 74 pitches.

Gantt put an end to that string by doubling down the line in left to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and Washington worked a walk to give Ohio State two on with nobody out. Noah McGowan followed with a grounder to second that resulted in a fielder’s choice and runners on the corners with one down, but Ottesen came back and beared down to strike out Tyler Cowles and Bo Coolen to end the threat unscathed.

Stoll got through 1.1 scoreless innings before running into trouble of his own in the seventh. Connor McNally singled to lead things off and Anderson walked, spelling the end of Stoll’s outing. He was relieved by freshman Jake Vance, and after a sacrifice bunt by Isola, Anderson singled in the sixth run of the game for Utah. Vance rolled a double play ball to end the inning two pitches later.

Junior Trenton Stoltz relieved Ottesen to start the seventh, and he abruptly gave up a run. Ratcliff led off with a double going the other way, and he went to third when Stoltz let loose a wild pitch. Isola made an attempt at throwing Ratcliff out at third and it got away, giving the Buckeyes their second run of the ballgame.

Chase Bauerle took over for the Utes in the eighth, and the freshman right-hander couldn’t finish the inning. Washington reached on an error with one out, stole second, and advanced to third on an error. The Ohio State co-captain came around to score three batter later when Coolen delivered an RBI single.

One batter later, Ratcliff singled home Dominic Canzone, who had walked and forced the Utes to turn to closer Dylan Drachler, closing the deficit to 6-4.

The Buckeyes got nothing more from there despite never conceding a thing.

Ohio State will round out its time in the desert with the final contest of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge on a quick turnaround on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET, with redshirt senior Jake Post making his second start of the season for the scarlet and gray. The Buckeyes dropped the No. 5 Badgers by a score of 6-1 on Friday.

The Buckeyes close their homestand in Columbus with a blowout win over the Dolphins.

The 20th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team finished their four-game homestand with a 16-8 win over the Jacksonville Dolphins Saturday in Columbus. With the win, the Buckeyes move to 4-0 on the season and are part of a collective 21-0 overall record by Big Ten lacrosse teams thus far this season.

It was a slow start for the Buckeyes, who went the entire first quarter without scoring, despite leading in overall shots by an 11-9 margin. Jacksonville found the back of the net with 4:28 left in the opening quarter to take a 1-0 lead into the second.

The Dolphins opened up the second quarter with a quick goal on a man-up opportunity, but the Buckeyes answered with two quick goals by senior attackman Eric Fannell and junior attackman Colin Chell to tie things back up early. Ohio State then took control of the game with another goal by Chell 31 seconds later, assisted by Fannell, in a man-up situation for the Buckeyes. Senior midfielders Johnny Pearson and J.T. Blubaugh both found the back of the net before Chell scored his third goal of the quarter. Senior midfielder capped off scoring for the half with 1:27 remaining in the quarter to give the Buckeyes a 7-2 advantage heading into the break.

Jacksonville narrowed Ohio State’s lead with a goal just under three minutes into the second half, but the Buckeyes answered with Chell’s fourth goal of the game. Fannell added two goals in 28 seconds midway through the quarter to put Ohio State up by seven. Senior attackman Austin Shanks scored with 2:33 remaining in the third before freshman attackman Lukas Buckley hit two quick shots to give the Buckeyes a 13-3 advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

Junior midfielder Trevor Hodgins added a Buckeye goal just over a minute into the fourth. Jacksonville scored quickly, but freshman attackman Nick Musci kept the lead at 11 with a goal of his own. Ohio State allowed two more goals before scoring their final goal of the game on a shot by freshman midfielder Colin O’Hare with 4:51 remaining in the fourth.

After scoring just one goal through three games, Chell led the Buckeyes with four goals on the day. Fannell had three goals and three assists, while Buckley added two goals. Overall, 10 players scored for Ohio State--the most of any game so far this season.

Despite losing the opening faceoff, senior specialist Jake Withers won 13-of-15 attempts on the day. Freshman specialist Christian Feliziani took over the job midway through the third quarter after the Buckeyes had built a sizeable lead over the Dolphins. Ohio State led faceoffs overall by a 17-9 margin. The Buckeyes also won the groundball battle, winning 30-48 attempts, with Withers leading the team with six groundball pickups.

Senior goalie Tom Carey had eight saves through three quarters, with fellow senior Nick Doyle relieving him in the fourth. Jacksonville recorded 10 saves to the Buckeyes’ eight, but shots on goal were 26-16 in favor of Ohio State.

Jacksonville now falls to 0-4 on the season and is scheduled to face Hartford next week. Ohio State, meanwhile, remains undefeated on the season, and heads to Milwaukee for their first away game of the season against No. 19 Marquette.

The team’s center was the latest cap casualty with a $9 million price tag.

In a move that will hurt some fans, the New York Jets have decided to cut starting center Nick Mangold in an effort to both free up cap space and start over with a new, younger regime. The 33 year old out of Ohio State was set to earn over $9 million in 2017, and will now have to look at other options:

pic.twitter.com/OfMuZ6wnkP

— Nick Mangold (@nickmangold) February 25, 2017

After being drafted by the Jets in 2006 — in the first round, at No. 29 overall — Mangold has been a consistent presence for the team. That was until last season. In his first eight years in the NFL, the center had only missed two games (in 2011). He went on to miss only one game per season in 2014 and 2015, before missing half the 2016 season with a lingering ankle injury. It was the most time Mangold has missed, and was fairly representative of where the Buckeye is in his career.

Mangold’s final deal in New York was worth $54 million over seven seasons. The deal made him the third highest paid center in the league and the fourth highest paid player for the Jets.

Mangold was voted to seven Pro Bowls and was voted All-Pro twice in his 11-year career. Teammates, coaches and fans alike will be sad to see Mangold go — he was loved just as much for what he did in the community, as he was for his on-field effort.

Fact: Matta got Final Four banners. Banners, (Good) Beats, Battlestar Galactica.

This has been a trying time in Ohio State basketball. For the first time in his career, Buckeye head coach Thad Matta is on the verge of not winning at least 20 games in a season. Because of that, and because of decline in the quality of Buckeye basketball over the past two seasons, Matta has been placed on the hot seat by the people of Twitter and parts of the OSU sports community.

In sports, and certainly in life, you will get criticism that is deserved and undeserved—on the flip side, you will probably get praise that is warranted and unwarranted.

As the public opinion trial of The People with Sports Hot Takes v. Thad Matta goes on, Matta did something to help his case to stay as the head man in charge of the Bucks: he coached a squad that picked apart the No.16 Wisconsin Badgers. That evanescence of good feeling — that the Buckeye program could win tough conference matchups under the microscope of national television — brought up an equally good question: What were some other moments Thad Matta brought to the Ohio State program that made you smile, rejoice and believe that, yes, this program’s potential was only limited to that of the sky?

Here are a few moments that come to mind that Thad Matta made the Buckeye fanbase feel good.

Two to tie, three to win...

The first year of the Matta era in 2004-2005 could be considered a trial run. The Buckeyes were ineligible to play in the postseason, and Matta had a year to iron out the kinks.

Entering the regular season finale against then-No. 1 Illinois, the Buckeyes were riding a three game losing streak. While the losses wouldn’t hurt the Buckeyes’ chance of making the tournament, the three losses were oh so close—two of them were by two points.

With the regular season finale being at home, Matta had to coach up a show. What came of the game against Illinois sparked a legendary moment. With seconds left to play, and down 64-62, junior forward Matt Sylvester launched a three from the far side wing.

CBS Sports broadcaster Gus Johnson was on the call for the instant classic and uttered, “two to tie, three to win it. Sylvester, for three!”

What followed was pandemonium, as Sylvester buried the shot to give the Buckeyes the go-ahead lead. Illinois inbounded the ball at halfcourt and put up a desperation three. The shot was off the mark, the fans rushed the court and Thad Matta had a signature win in his first year at Ohio State.

Lewis keeps hope alive

The 2007 road to the Final Four looked good for Ohio State. After all, the Buckeyes ended the regular season on a 14-game win streak—and seemed to be peaking at just the right time to make a run in the NCAA Tournament.

Matta and the crew toppled Wisconsin in the Big Ten tournament and cruised past Central Connecticut State in the first round of the big dance. All didn’t seem well; all was well.

Nothing seemed to get in the No.1-seed Buckeyes’ way. When OSU faced Xavier in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the company from Columbus learned something: Xavier was, in fact, going to be a problem.

Xavier, who made it to the 2004 Elite Eight with Matta as the conductor, was about to send the No.1-seed Bucks packing early. The only thing missing from Xavier’s bid to upset the near invincible Greg Oden led squad was Matta whispering, “Eu Tu, Xavier?”

The upset was in the bag for the No.9-seed Musketeers. Except, Ron Lewis was playing for the Buckeyes. With under 10 seconds left to play in the second half and down 59-62, OSU rebounded a missed Xavier free throw and marched down the court. Mike Conley Jr. had possession of the ball at the top of the key and dished it to Ron Lewis. Lewis stepped into the three point shot and had a clear look at the basket — courtesy of a screen by Conley Jr.

Just like that, the game was tied. OSU dominated in overtime, and pulled out a 78-71 win in Rupp Arena. The Buckeyes win streak reached 22 games, but was snapped in the championship game by the Florida Gators.

Without Lewis, though, that 2007 Final Four banner isn’t hanging inside the Schottenstein Center.

The march to New Orleans

Jim Boeheim and his Syracuse Orange squad were on the cusp of making it back to the Final Four in 2012. For Boeheim, he was overlooking a career precipice that included two Final Four trips to New Orleans. The 1987 trip ended with a last-second lost to the hands of Keith Smart and the Indiana Hoosiers; the 2003 trip ended on a higher note, thanks to Carmelo Anthony leading the way in the Orange’s title victory over a Roy Williams coached Kansas squad.

Syracuse entered the tournament as the No. 1-seed in the East region, while the Buckeyes were the No.2-seed. On the year, ‘Cuse suffered only two losses, and seemed destined to make it to the Final Four. However, Matta and the Buckeyes happened.

Inside the TD Bank Garden in Boston, four Buckeyes scored double figures in the Elite 8 matchup against the Orange. Jared Sullinger, who would eventually play for the Boston Celtics in the same arena, led OSU with 19 points. Lenzelle Smith Jr. delivered on three shots from downtown en route to picking up 18 points in the win.

The Buckeyes beat the Orange on the rebounding front (decisively on the offensive and defensive sides) and held their top scorer of the game, Brandon Triche, to 15 points.

For Matta, the win punched his ticket to his second Final Four appearance—and first to take place in New Orleans.

You can’t win the national championship every year. In fact, just getting to the Final Four takes a little bit of luck on top of the skill.

On the TV show The Office, Ed Helm’s character, Andy Bernard, had an epiphany in the series finale, “I wish there was a way to know you're in the good old days before you've actually left them.”

Unlike The Office, the story of Matta and the Buckeyes hasn’t ended. Who knows, maybe a few more ‘good old days’ are around the corner.

The Buckeyes extend their win streak to three with the victory over That Team Up North.

If Ohio State played as well as they did tonight every night, they’d be unquestioned Big Ten favorites. They dominated throughout and and took down an inferior team just as they should. They didn’t shy away and fall into a shell just because they had a lead.

And because of all that, the No. 12 Ohio State mens hockey team came away with a 4-2 victory over Michigan. The Wolverines led throughout most of the first, but a late first period goal from the Buckeyes turned the momentum heading into the dressing room, and Ohio State wouldn’t give it back.

Evan Allen was the one who put Michigan up 1-0 12:12 into the first, for what would turn out to be Michigan’s only lead of the night. Joseph Cecconi went off with an interference call with 1:40 left in the first, and the Buckeyes would find a way to capitalize with just one second left in the first.

David Gust scored on the ensuing powerplay at 19:59, with assists going to Dakota Joshua and Mason Jobst. All of a sudden, despite Michigan having the lead for the last eight-plus minutes, Ohio State took it to the dressing room tied at one apiece.

In the second, the Millers took over.

At 2:41, Kevin Miller scored with the sole assist going to Matt Miller, and Kevin would strike again at 9:50, with the assists going Dakota Joshua and Gust. Ohio State turned momentum in the first and bombed Michigan back to the Stone Age in the second.

Allen cut the lead to one with his second of the night at 15:06, but Nick Schilkey decided a one goal lead wasn’t enough, and put Ohio State up 4-2 with just seven seconds left in the period. His 24th of the year put the game out of reach for Michigan and gave the game the score it would go home with.

OSU completely dominated in that second period, scoring three times, having a Christian Lampasso goal waved off for goalie interference and outshooting UM 14-9, following outshooting Michigan 20-11 in the first.
