MONTREAL, QC – JANUARY 04: Colin White #18 of Team United States celebrates his second period goal during the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship semifinal game against Team Russia at the Bell Centre on January 4, 2017 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. (Photo by Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images)

If you’ve been reading Bruce Garrioch’s work over the past number of days, you have assuredly seen some of his writing detailing how Senators blue-chip prospect Colin White’s NCAA career may be nearing an end.

Even though the Senators’ second first round pick from 2015 (21st overall) is close to completing his sophomore year and is eligible to play two more seasons at Boston College, speculation persists that White will forego his final two years so that he can pursue a professional playing career.

Boston College’s season could end this weekend when the Eagles take on Vermont in best of three Hockey East quarterfinals.

The lingering question is whether he will join the Senators this season or when the team breaks training camp next fall.

Pointing to the additions of players like Tommy Wingels, Viktor Stalberg, Alexandre Burrows and yes, even Chris DiDomenico, Garrioch believes that these acquisitions and the return of a Bobby Ryan or Chris Neil from their respective injuries may congest the Senators’ roster to the point where there may be no room for White. Combined with the fact that the Senators are playing must-win games and that if White plays in more than nine regular season and/or playoff games, he will lose one year of eligibility off of his entry-level contract, Garrioch reasoned that these factors are convincing enough to believe that the Senators may be better off holding back White.

Although Ryan’s return will inevitably push someone off the third line with Jean-Gabriel Pageau, it’s not like the bar is set very high for White to play on the fourth line where they could use his blend of speed and hockey IQ. He certainly should offer the Senators some offensive upside over the aforementioned Wingels or Chris Kelly, but Guy Boucher may be loathe to scratch Kelly considering how he leads Senators forwards in shorthanded ice time per game.

General manager Pierre Dorion improved the team’s depth without giving up any rosterable players (sorry, Curtis Lazar), but it remains to be seen how the fourth line will look once everyone’s healthy.

To this point in the season, the performance of the fourth line has left something to be desired and conceivably, if we’re looking at White trying to provide something more than what a Kelly or Wingels is offering, it’s not like the bar is set particularly high. Most importantly, it’s not as though the Senators are some dominant powerhouse team that can shun a potential upgrade simply on account of giving preferential treatment to its vets.

This team needs to play its best available talents and if that includes White, so be it.

Even if it means burning a year on his entry-level contract, I don’t know how much it will rear its head. It’s not like I expect him to produce enough offence where it adversely puts the Senators behind the eight-ball when his ELC expires. Perhaps most importantly, White will fall well short of the 40-game threshold that would “count as an accrued year of service counting towards the seven years required to become an unrestricted free agent“.

Tough Schedule Down the Stretch

It’s a good thing the Senators are picking up points against division rivals and building themselves a cushion to work with.

As some fans have noted, once the Senators return from their three-game road trip to Dallas, Arizona and Colorado, the team faces an incredibly difficult stretch of hockey to close out the month.

Fortunately, the Senators’ margin for error is a little bit bigger than it could have been.

The Buckeyes have several key areas in need of work to make it back to the highest stage in college football.

“The passing attack clearly is the Buckeyes’ top priority this spring, and there really isn’t a close second.”

- Austin Ward, ESPN

Spring practice has begun, and that means football is back - at least, for the time being. Still, football in Columbus always means high expectations, and Urban Meyer is well aware of the task that lies ahead for Ohio State. The Buckeyes open the season against Indiana this fall and there’s plenty to be done before then for Ohio State to be ready. Returning starting quarterback J.T. Barrett means the Buckeyes are sure to be one of the top ranked teams in the country at the start of the season. And despite losing some stellar talent to the NFL draft, Ohio State is in the same position each season.

Some of the things that will be question marks this spring and during the early fall will be about the passing attack, how the Buckeyes can replace their defensive secondary stars, and even about some special teams in terms of kicking and punting. Last season downfield passing was a large part of the offensive struggle, and will need to be much improved in 2017. In the secondary, there will be three fresh faces to start the season as only Damon Webb returns from last season. Malik Hooker, Gareon Conley, and Marshon Lattimore headed to the NFL and are all likely to be taken higher in the first round of the draft. As for the kicking, if Sean Nuernberger can get healthy, he seems to be the obvious choice for placekicking. Losing Cameron Johnston will no doubt hurt though, and it’s up to Meyer to find a suitable replacement.

“The hole in the middle of the unit appears it will be filled by a familiar face. Chris Worley was working as the middle linebacker on the first day of spring drills.”

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

The spring practice opening for Ohio State means the depth chart has already begun to take shape early on. Bill Landis of Cleveland.com broke down what he saw on defense and who looks to be the starters. On the defensive line it was no surprise that Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis were the starters on the ends, while Dre’Mont Jones and Michael Hill anchor the middle. The biggest change at linebacker was the move to put Chris Worley at middle linebacker (he was outside last season), with Jerome Baker and Dante Booker returning to the lineup after missing much of 2016 due to injury.

The secondary showed the most significant change, for obvious reasons. At the cornerbacks Damon Arnette and Denzel Ward were on the first team with Erick Smith and Damon Webb at the safety spots. Some notable backups on defense included Nick Bosa, stuck behind two great defensive ends. Still expect to see plenty of Bosa during the season as there is usually quite a bit of rotation. Jalyn Holmes is also a backup on the line, while Justin Hilliard is the backup middle linebacker.

“[Biggest strengths on each Big Ten team] Ohio State - The pass rush.”

- Ari Wasserman, Cleveland.com

Continuing the breakdown of what appeared to be the depth chart, the offense looked much the same from previous seasons. J.T. Barrett is the unquestioned starter but the battle for backup quarterback continues. As of now, it appears Joe Burrow has it locked down with Dwayne Haskins and freshman Tate Martell fighting for the spot as well. Mike Weber returns after a 1,000-yard rushing season at running back and according to Wasserman, Demario McCall got some work at running back but also caught some passes and believes McCall is the favorite to replace Curtis Samuel at H-back, which makes sense given his explosiveness which he displayed in mop-up duties last season.

Some familiar faces returned at wide receiver with Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin, and K.J. Hill getting the most work. From left to right on the offensive line, it went Jamarco Jones, Michael Jordan, Billy Price, Demetrius Knox, and Isaiah Prince. It will be interesting to see if Binjimen Victor can make a push for a starting spot this fall at wide receiver. He showed flashes last season in limited opportunities and has a great skill set and frame for the position.

Ohio State’s Thad Matta says an opposing team told a recruit he was going to die

usa_today_9878265.0.jpg

That’s one way to negative recruit.

Like it or not, Ohio State’s Thad Matta is going to be the Buckeyes’ head basketball coach for the 2017-2018. The Buckeyes are coming off two extremely disappointing seasons consecutively and a string of seemingly more misses than hits on the recruiting trail.

While the 2018 recruiting class seems to be something to write home about and with some much needed depth on the way, it’s hard to imagine how things could get any worse for men’s basketball. One possible reason for those struggles, according to Matta, is some especially irresponsible speculation on the recruiting trail.

Matta’s back issues have been well documented. And even in the aforementioned Yahoo! Sports’ report, they stated the only chance of Matta not returning would be the result of those health frustrations and not any on the court ones. But apparently at least one coach has been taking Matta’s back problems to near inconceivable lengths.

"It's been used for probably the last eight years to be honest to you. Somebody told a recruit I was dying. Not that my foot didn't lift but that I was going to die. Tough business I'm in here,” Matta said in a video captured by Buckeye Grove.

"It was funny because the kid was going to have a press conference and the father said they were going to delay it. I said 'I understand. Why?' 'Health issues'. I said, 'What's going on?' 'Well, it's your health. They told us you're going to die.'"

Matta reiterated that he’s never missed a day of work in his nearly 30 year coaching career and that he’s never even been hampered on the recruiting trail as a result of his back problems.

If Matta’s going to be the one to get the basketball program back on track, his odds of doing so probably won’t be limited because he’s on his death bed. At least not any more than any of the rest of us are.

All may be fair in love, war, and recruiting. But telling kids that an opposing coach is going to die? That’s crossing a line, in our opinion.

Meyer_3.7.17.0.jpeg

“The Journey 2017” has begun.

Coaches had their whistles ready and players were prepared to sweat when the Ohio State football program put in Day 1 of spring practice on Tuesday. Following the return to indoor practice, head coach Urban Meyer spoke to the media about a few of the recent player departures and what he hopes to see out of the incoming freshman.

The Buckeyes welcomed back 15 starters — eight on offense and seven on defense -- and 43 Letterman when they opened the doors to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. This marks the 16th set of spring drills Meyer will oversee -- his sixth in Columbus — and once again coaches are looking for the next man up following six early departures for the NFL.

Meyer also welcomed a few new coaches to campus on Tuesday (in addition to players), offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Kevin Wilson, quarterbacks coach Ryan Day, and linebackers coach Bill Davis. And while he’s not new to the staff, Greg Schiano will take on a new role as the team’s sole defensive coordinator -- although Meyer took a step back from the announcement during his presser, saying that isn’t definitive.

  • Meyer opened by talking about his 10 new players in the class of 2017, “They seem to seem to be everything we thought when we recruited them and then some."
  • Normally Meyer likes to give guys who took a lot of snaps in the fall some rest during the spring, but he clarified that he does that more for guys who take a lot of contact, like the guys on the offense line, not guys like J.T. Barrett. He expects the quarterback to get a ton of reps this spring with some new things they are doing on offense.
  • Meyer is specifically looking for Barrett to improve his accuracy. He noted that, “running the football is complicated, throwing the football is even more complicated, and it’s all tied to pass protection [...] obviously it that wasn’t a strength.”
  • With the addition of Kevin Wilson, even though Meyer had said that Ohio State will continue to play like Ohio State, he admitted today that the route concepts and schemes will be updated with the new offensive coordinator. Meyer said “the key word is mesh, if it fits in conceptually” the team was open to “enhancing” what they do. The head coach doubled down saying the Buckeyes are “not changing, we’re enhancing”.
  • The head coach was asked about how the team plans on filling the right guard spot. Meyer noted that Demetrious Knox is a guy who will be very involved — although he wouldn’t go as far to say he was the favorite for the starting role — and also noted Matt Burrell and Malcolm Pridgeon.
  • Also on the move, Chris Worley is now at middle linebacker, Booker is back at the SAM and Jerome Backer at the WILL. Meyer did say that it’s just Day 1 though, and all that could change again. He specifically wants to make sure Worley’s body can hang at the linebacker spot.
  • Meyer was also asked about Kyle Trout announcing his plan to transfer from Ohio State, yet still participating in spring practice. The head coach considered this situation a win-win, with Trout unable to transfer until he graduates, giving him a few more months with the program.
  • He was also asked about Tyler Gerald leaving the program, to which Meyer succinctly replied, “He just quit” and that he wasn’t involved in that departure.
  • When asked about young Buckeye Brendon White (currently getting reps at wide receiver), Meyer said he loves guys like that. White was a quarterback in high school, is fast enough to fill in at receiver and is learning to tackle on defense. His first impact will be on special teams, but Meyer expects to have to make a decision closer to the season about his role on offense or defense.
  • Ohio State put together a leadership program with a growing group of upper classman. Meyer wasn’t ready to disclose the members of this committee just yet, but noted they have a “good solid group of older players”.

Several Buckeyes could be heading to new teams as free agency gets in full swing.

Just a few months have passed since the end of the 2016 NFL season, and players have already started getting cut, traded and re-signed. Several former Ohio State stars are looking for new deals as they head into spring training, and it all starts with the opening of free agency.

A few big name former Buckeyes are looking for new big-money, longterm contracts and others are looking for one more roster spot on their way to retirement. There are a couple notable veterans, like James Laurinaitis and Mike Nugent, who will consider retiring after they both were released before the end of the 2016 season. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them both follow A.J. Hawk’s lead and hang up their cleats.

Terrelle Pryor: Coming off his first 1,000-yard season as a receiver, Pryor is now in a spot to make big money. He has openly expressed interest in staying with the Cleveland Browns, but also suggested he’d let his agents take care of the business side of things. Despite his inexperience at the wide receiver position, his size has been a big factor in his success on the outside. Being able to physically dominate in coverage can make up for inconsistent route-running every now and then.

Johnathan Hankins: After establishing himself as one of the better interior defenders in the league, the Buckeye is now ready for a paycheck to match. The Giants have a tough financial situation, and the team’s decision to use the franchise tag on Jason Pierre-Paul meant even less available funds to resign Hankins. The lineman is young enough to draw a big payday from a team looking to fill a gap in their run defense.

John Simon: The edge rusher has improved over the last two seasons in Houston, in large part thanks to the direction of newly appointed defensive coordinator -- and Buckeye — Mike Vrabel. Simon was able to step up when starter J.J. Watt was sidelined for the entire season. Despite having several career-highs in 2016, Simon ended up missing significant time with a chest injury. He rehabbed 12 hours a day to get back before the end of the season, and he did — officially foregoing the IR designation.

Nick Mangold: The 11-year veteran was released by the team that drafted him back in the 2006. The Jets were facing a cap hit of over $9 million if they kept Mangold on the roster, and decided to part ways with the seven-time Pro Bowler. He doesn’t intend to retire just yet — despite finishing 2016 on IR due to an ankle injury — and could be a good fall gap option for a team focused on short term success.
