Between the Chatfield commitment and new offers, the Buckeyes are ramping up their recruiting efforts.

It’s exciting times for Ohio State football fans. With the releases of the television times for the Buckeyes upcoming games, it feels as if football is coming sooner rather than later. On top of that, the Bucks secured a big-time commitment from Andrew Chatfield late Thursday evening.

While a lot of preparation has to be done still by the coaching staff to get the 2017 team ready for another potential playoff season, recruiting still takes a major priority for the staff. With the way Meyer and his gang have been recruiting since they’ve been in Columbus, Ohio, the Scarlet and Gray are primed and loaded for continuous shots at a national championship.

Sunshine state remains loaded

If there’s one state that Urban Meyer may know better than the rest, it’s Florida. With two national championships at the helm of the Florida Gators program, Meyer knows exactly what kind of talent is available in the Sunshine State. That remains true to this day as Meyer and his staff have plucked top talents from Florida each recruiting class— and this year seems to be no different.

Yesterday, the trend continued as Ohio State sent an offer out to Lakeland, Fla. native Brendan Gant. A four-star safety from the 2019 class, Gant has the length to be a superior coverage safety, but also has the frame to become a potential run-stopping threat. At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Gant is currently a high school sophomore, meaning there’s plenty of time to add size to his already impressive frame.

Blessed to receive and offer from Ohio State University ⭕⭕pic.twitter.com/7EcrdWPa2d

— BG3️⃣ 3️⃣ (@TheReal_BGant) June 1, 2017

Currently, Gant holds just over 10 offers, but Florida State is the school many are pegging him to even though it is fairly early in the game. Other notable offers come from the likes of Florida, Kentucky, Arizona and Miami. With the Buckeyes being the latest to the fold, Gant has to see the success Ohio State is having with their defensive secondary as they are pumping out top NFL Draft picks each year now. Time will tell if Meyer and the Buckeyes will become a true threat, but maybe this becomes yet another epic Florida State-Ohio State recruiting battle.

Bobby Brown gets an offer

Fresh off the offer to Florida prospect Gant, the Buckeyes went after another top recruiting state: Texas.

Four-star defensive end Bobby Brown (Arlington, TX / Lamar) secured the OSU offer and now runs his total offer count to 17. Brown, a member of the 2019 class, let the world know via Twitter that the Buckeyes came calling.

I've just received a offer from the Ohio State Buckeyes‼️‼️‼️ pic.twitter.com/n7iCcEIk3I

— I hate OL's (@tre_brown8700) June 1, 2017

Among those 17 institutions are some football powerhouses; Ohio State joins the likes of Red River rivals, Oklahoma and Texas, in the pursuit of Brown. Right now, Brown stacks up amongst the best in Texas, picking up a top 20 spot in the 247sports recruiting grade.

If more develops in Brown’s recruitment to Columbus, we’ll have you covered.

OSU continues to make the top schools list

Almost each day that passes, a recruit is taking to social media to announce his final schools or list of top schools he will be considering before making a final decision on the college of his choice. With that comes the constant presence of Ohio State, as the Bucks repeatedly are finding themselves in the race for many of the nation’s top overall prospects in the 2018 class.

Yesterday, there was no change at all when another top talent listed the Buckeyes in his top six schools. Four-star defensive end/defensive tackle Greg Emerson (Jackson, TN / North Side) announced a list that included Ohio State, Tennessee, Oregon, Alabama, Clemson and Ole Miss as the final schools.

Top 6 pic.twitter.com/RaMr68dkMU

— Greg Emerson/G.mamba (@sneakerhad_greg) June 1, 2017

Ranked as the sixth best at his position in the 2018 class and the second best overall prospect in Tennessee, each of the following schools would love to add this 6-foot-3, 300-pound stud to their class.

Most associated with the home state Tennessee Volunteers, Meyer and staff know this region well enough to believe they have more than a fighting chance to secure his pledge. However, time will only tell which way Emerson decides, and his announcement could come sooner than many may have originally expected.

Quick Hits:

  • Three-star ATH Dashon Bussell, a former teammate of current Ohio State WR Austin Mack, will camp at Ohio State on June 13.
  • Stay tuned today to LGHL as five-star LB Teradja Mitchell announces between Florida State and Ohio State this evening at 7 p.m.

The Buckeyes pick up another defensive BOOOOOOM!

Ohio State is already loaded at the defensive line. And now, thanks to a new commitment, they’re about to be even deeper and stronger.

Per his Twitter account, 2018 DE Andrew Chatfield of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., announced his commitment to Ohio State.

My Commitment.... pic.twitter.com/wphIpCZx99

— Andrew Chatfield™ ⛽️ (@Drew_Chatfield) June 2, 2017

The 6’2, 221-pound Chatfield is listed as a four-star recruit in the 247Sports Composite. He’s the 291st ranked prospect nationally, the 15th-ranked defensive end and the 49th-ranked player in the state of Florida. He’s a product of American Heritage high school, a state power that also produced former Ohio State Buckeye Torrance Gibson.

Chatfield picked the Buckeyes over LSU, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and a slew of other high profile programs. Chatfield is the 11th current commitment in the class of 2018, a class where every single player is in the top 300 prospects nationally. That’s nuts.

Ohio State is hitting defensive line recruiting hard in this class, as Chatfield joins five-star defensive tackle Taron Vincent and five-star defensive end Brenton Cox.

You can check Chatfield out in action here.

LGHL Urban Meyer’s recent wide receiver recruits at Ohio State have a common thread

There is no doubt that the head coach is targeting taller wide receivers.

“Everybody wants Julio Jones. They don’t come around very often.”

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer via Ben Axelrod, Land Of 10

There has been a common thread among many of the Ohio State wide receivers Urban Meyer has been recruiting recently. Height. In the 2017 recruiting class, all four of the receivers that Ohio State got commitments from measure at 6-foot-2 or taller. At 6-foot-5, Jaylen Harris stands out as Ohio State’s tallest receiver signee this year. 2017 isn’t the first year Ohio State has targeted taller receivers, but the trend of bigger receivers is becoming more apparent.

During Meyer’s time in Columbus, his most successful receiver has been Michael Thomas, who measured in at 6-3. Thomas excelled at Ohio State, and put together a tremendous rookie season in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. Last year, Noah Brown, who is 6-2, was Ohio State’s leading receiver with seven touchdown catches. Now, Meyer is hoping receivers like Binjimen Victor, who is listed at 6-3, and Austin Mack, who is 6-2, will be the next in the line of recent taller wide receivers who will be able to make a name for themselves and not only contribute to Ohio State’s success, but work their way to the NFL.

“At first it was pretty tough getting used to it because we had to get up so early, go to practice and then we had school stuff until whenever you pretty much got your stuff done. But I think it helped a little bit having some online classes because then you could get your stuff done on time.”

Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell via Patrick Murphy, Bucknuts

Tate Martell already has a semester under his belt at Ohio State, and while it did take a little time to adjust to life in Columbus, the freshman is starting to find his way. Martell and nine other Buckeye recruits enrolled early to try and get a leg up on the 2017 season, but there isn’t really anything that can prepare a football player for life at Ohio State. Not only did the quarterback have Ohio State’s playbook to wrap his head around, he also had to deal with the likes of defensive linemen Jalyn Holmes and Sam Hubbard trying to get at him in practice.

Luckily for Martell, not quite so much is expected from him this year, as fifth-year senior J.T. Barrett has a hold on the starting quarterback position. Even though Barrett will be the starter this year for Ohio State, Martell is still trying to make a name for himself and set himself up to make some noise next year, when Ohio State will be forced to have a new quarterback take the reigns after Barrett exhausts his eligibility. There’s no question that Martell has the confidence to succeed at Ohio State, now he just has to show it on the field, and early indications are that he is off to a good start.

“It’s the knowledge he brings to the table as a former player, but you can also tell how much research he puts in.”

Major League Gaming announcer Chris Puckett on Kirk Herbstreit via Andrew Bucholtz, Awful Announcing

Major League Broadcasting announcer Chris Puckett grew up in Columbus and is a huge Ohio State Buckeyes fan. Puckett’s love for the Buckeyes though isn’t a reason he credits Kirk Herbstreit as his favorite analyst. Herbstreit’s announcing style is why Puckett admires Herbstreit’s work so much. Puckett can tell the research that Herbstreit puts in when preparing for games he is slated to call, and Herbstreit also adds a lot to the broadcast.

Over the last few years eSports have really taken off in this country, and Major League Gaming might have their own Herbstreit with Puckett. There are differences though between calling football and calling eSports. The pace of the game makes it so announcers at times have to quickly change their focus. Also, with calling different games, there are different strategies that will be used in the way announcers call the games. Puckett says that because of the career he has carved out in announcing, it changes the way he watches other sports. As Major League Gaming continues to grow, there is no doubt that Puckett has done Columbus proud.

With 75 of the best in college football history on this year’s Hall of Fame ballot, there’s certainly some steep competition, but 3 all-time Ohio State greats were named to Hall’s 2018 ballot on Thursday. The results will be announced January 8, 2018 in the lead up to the 2018 College Football Playoff Championship Game. With a cap of just three nominees per school for the national ballot, the three who made the cut for OSU this time are running backs Keith Byars and Jim Otis and tackle Chris Ward.

It’s practically a crime Byars isn’t already inducted. The seventh all-time leading rusher at OSU was a unanimous All-American and famously finished as the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 1984. He still holds a school all-purpose yards record of 2,441 today.

Otis might be less familiar to younger readers but was a key cog on the great 1968 national championship team. He too was a consensus All-American and is one of only four Buckeyes to lead his teams in rushing three different seasons.

Ward helped lift OSU to four straight Big Ten titles helping Archie Griffin become a two-time Heisman Trophy winner in the process. The tackle was also a two-time All-American.

Given that the voting results seem almost at random each year, it’s tough to predict how the vote will break. Should any Buckeyes reach the necessary threshold, they’d join 25 other Ohio State all-time greats in the College Football Hall of Fame.

The Buckeyes are trying to plant even more flags in the Lone Star State.

Wease hauls in Buckeye offer

Make no mistake, Ohio State has a primary focus on this year’s recruiting class. However, the Buckeyes are also on the prowl for their first addition in next year’s cycle. On Wednesday, the Scarlet and Gray pinpointed a prospect from the Lone Star State as one they would love to have in Columbus, Ohio when he has to put ink to the paper.

That guy is '19 wide receiver Theo Wease from Allen (TX).

Blessed beyond measures to say I have received an offer from The Ohio State University!!! #GoBuckeyes ⭕pic.twitter.com/PzEarkOkGx

— Theo Wease Jr (@weasejr_) May 31, 2017

Wease is a 6-foot-3, 189-pounder that makes his plays for Allen (TX) and has already reeled in 30 offers because of it. The early grade on Wease via 247Sports pegs him as a current four-star prospect. To add to that, 247Sports also lists Wease as the nation’s 32nd best player in the entire class and just two spots below '19 WR Jashawn Sheffield, who is another Buckeye target, as the seventh best pass catcher.

As for what the Ohio State offer means to Wease, he didn't hold back when he sat down with 247Sports' Bill Kurelic.

"I’m excited about it,” Wease said. “Ohio State has always been one of my dream schools. I’m very excited about this one. “I really like coach Meyer as a person, their tradition of winning and the atmosphere" - Theo Wease to Bill Kurelic

The good news didn't stop their. Wease would go on to tell Kurelic that he's planning on checking out Ohio State in July and also take in the Buckeyes matchup against Oklahoma, another top competitor for his services, early in the season.

Lastly, after picking up this latest offer from Ohio State, their was some movement on Wease's 247Sports Crystal Ball. Coming into Wednesday, it was the Sooners who were the projected landing spot for the talented receiver from Texas. But before the night concluded, it was the Buckeyes who grabbed three new predictions in this battle and as of today, they are the new favorite.

More OSU targets heading to Beaverton

Ohio State already has a host of commits set to participate in the annual "The Opening" event in Oregon. Buckeye commits Sevyn Banks, Brenton Cox, Jaelen Gill, Josh Proctor, Taron Vincent and Jaiden Woodbey are the names for the time being set to showcase their talents on the gridiron.

Not to be forgotten, major Ohio State targets like cornerback Tyson Campbell, offensive tackle Jackson Carman, cornerback Anthony Cook, cornerback Houston Griffith, defensive end KJ Henry, linebacker Teradja Mitchell, defensive end Micah Parsons, tight end Jeremy Ruckert and defensive end Tyreke Smith are also slated to be at “The Opening.”

However, on Wednesday, we learned that some new names will be added to the bunch. But this time around, it’s of the underclassmen variety.

Of the six newest additions to the event, the names that should stand out to Ohio State recruiting followers would be DT Jowon Briggs of Walnut Hills (OH), OT Devontae Dobbs of Belleville (MI); and Ohio State's top target in the 2019 class, defensive end Zach Harrison of Olentangy (OH).

We’ll see what these star-studded recruits can do at the end of June.
