The 2017 class is getting some badly needed late reinforcements.

If you’re looking for a reason to feel a little better about Ohio State’s roster situation for this season, you’ve got one, as the Buckeyes just added a big time recruit late in the process.

Four-star 2017 forward Kyle Young originally picked Butler over Ohio State, along with other offers. But now that the Buckeyes have hired Chris Holtmann away from the Bulldogs, Young has decided to join him in Columbus.

— Kyle Young (@kyleyoung_35) June 19, 2017

The 6-7 Young out of Massillon, Ohio was a consensus four-star recruit, and was the #2 player in the state of Ohio, per the 247 Sports Composite. He picked Butler over Ohio State, Illinois, Florida, Michigan State, and other power programs. He averaged 19.3 points per game as Massillon Jackson.

Young may not play a huge role right away, but he provides critical depth for a roster that lacks it at virtually every position. He can run and space the floor, finish in traffic, and work as an undersized four, or a three, depending on who else is on the floor.

Former Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier has some updates for the next NFL collective bargaining agreement

The fourth-year linebacker thinks the current CBA needs some serious rethinking.

“Sometimes guys have to wait five years. Other guys don’t. But that’s what they agreed on in the past. Next time we’ve just got to do a better job of structuring what we want to do. At the end of the day, if you play at a high level, things should pan out for you.”

-Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier, via Nick Shook, NFL.com

Former Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier has been looking out for his fellow first-round picks this offseason, arguing for a new collective bargaining agreement that would provide more leeway on rookie contracts for first-round selections. Shazier is entering his fourth season in the league after the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him with the 15th-overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. The Steelers picked up the fifth-year option on Shazier’s contract back in April, despite Shazier missing 14 games over the course of his first three seasons due to injury. Shazier made his first Pro Bowl last year after finishing the regular season with 87 tackles and three picks.

Currently, according to the collective bargaining agreement, the league uses a slotting system for rookie salaries, standardized across the league. All first-round draft picks have a four-year contract, with a team option in the fifth year. First-round selections are also limited in that they cannot negotiate a new deal until after their third year of play. Second-round picks can work for new deals after three years, a fact which has proven to be beneficial for the RaidersDerek Carr and, despite the drama, for the Raiders, as they can secure what turned out to be their franchise quarterback a year before they could with first-round picks.

The GiantsOdell Beckham Jr. and the RamsAaron Donald have found themselves in the same boat as Shazier, having also been selected in the first round of the 2014 draft. Neither will become a free agent until 2019 and, despite being among the league’s best young talent, are limited in their options to earn more money on their current teams. Both are attempting to restructure their contracts to be more in line with other players at the top of their respective positions, but such changes have been rare.

“Very few times in our profession do you get to transition with a boss that you know and understand how he wants things to be done--then to have the opportunity as a complete staff. Mike, Terry and I work really well together. We take a lot of pride in that.”

-Ohio State assistant basketball coach Ryan Pedon, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

It is not a new thing for head coaches to bring along assistants when they move to new positions with new teams. However, Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann opted to bring all three of his assistants over from Butler when he was named head coach in Columbus. Last season, in their only year as an intact coaching staff, the group earned a second-place finish in the Big East and made it all the way to the Sweet 16 before falling to North Carolina, the eventual tournament champions. Ryan Pedon, Mike Schrage and Terry Johnson have already arrived on campus and gotten to work after signing contracts which will collectively pay more than $1 million annually.

Johnson was at Butler for 10 years before moving to Columbus, and was part of both of the Bulldog’s runs to the national title game in 2010 and 2011. And while he couldn’t quite get Butler all the way to a title during those two seasons, he did gain valuable experience travelling deep into the NCAA Tournament--something that he can bring and translate in Columbus.

Pedon himself is from Bexley. While at Butler, he was Holtmann’s top recruiter, even bringing several players from Ohio across the border to play in Indianapolis. He has also had assistant coaching roles at Toledo and Miami (Ohio), giving him significant knowledge of the recruiting landscape in his home state, which should prove a valuable asset for Ohio State.

Schrage, meanwhile, has worked for the best during his career, starting out as a student manager under Bob Knight at Indiana before moving to a series of administrative roles at Duke under Coach K himself. Prior to joining Butler’s staff, Schrage worked as an assistant coach at Stanford. Though he only worked with Holtmann for a year in Indianapolis, he brings significant experience from top programs with him in his new role.

“As for men’s basketball, the coach must be able to deal with the pressure that comes with being at Ohio State, a program that has good history, while also recognizing that his group will always be second fiddle to the king in town, the football program.”

-Patrick Murphy, Bucknuts

Few schools are able to financially support major football and basketball programs simultaneously. Florida managed such a feat just a decade ago, earning national titles in both sports in 2006. However, many schools must ultimately choose which program will be their flagship between the two sports.

But Ohio State is in a unique position, bringing historical success in both programs and an athletic department capable of funding both to a high degree. Urban Meyer is the third-highest paid football coach in the NCAA, and Chris Holtmann’s expected $3.1 million salary is also close to the top among Division I basketball coaches.

Along with the high salaries, however, come high expectations for both sports’ fan bases. Football’s success is familiar, as the team has made the College Football Playoff in two-of-three years since its inception and earned a national championship in recent memory. Fans demand similar success year in and year out, and Meyer has proven capable of handling the pressure of being a consistent top-five team.

Basketball, however, is somewhat removed. The team has struggled in the last two seasons, failing to make the NCAA Tournament in either and this year even being snubbed an invitation to the NIT. And while fans don’t have to go too far back to remember successful basketball teams in Columbus (the program made it to the Sweet 16 for four-straight years from 2010-2013), it has been easy to forget in the past couple seasons that Thad Matta was Ohio State basketball’s winningest coach.

Hence comes the pressure that faces Holtmann, not only to right-track the basketball program, but also to do so while living in the shadow of the football program. Meyer has acknowledged that he and Matta always had a great relationship, and says that he looks “forward to working with” Holtmann--a sentiment echoed by the new coach.

Mike Conley continues to lead on and off the court.

Mike Conley is back in Columbus and putting down roots. The 29-year-old star Memphis Grizzlies point guard recently bought a house in Columbus and returns to where he earned All-American status at Ohio State in 2007, and was recently named to the 2017 class of the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame. On top of moving back to Columbus, Conley is dedicated to a new project fighting sickle cell disease.

For Conley, the disease is personal. Two of his cousins suffer from the disease, and it’s become his mission to increase awareness for it, and for the potential cure that could be available. For sickle cell disease, bone marrow donations from matching donors is an exceedingly successful cure.

The Buckeye has partnered with Be The Match, an organization that collects cheek swabs to build a bone marrow donor database. They then look through the database to match a donor with a person in need, generally someone who has been struggling with sickle cell disease or a blood cancer.

On his partnership with Be The Match, Conley told me in a recent interview, “I heard about all the good work they [Be The Match] were doing and I really wanted to be involved with it because I’m really engraved in the sickle cell fight down in Memphis and across the world. I saw the work they did to fight those kinds of diseases [sickle cell], and blood cancer and things like that and I just wanted to be involved in it the best I could.”

He talked a lot about how his work with Be The Match is for the community as a whole and such an important way for him to raise awareness and give back, saying, “It’s not just about my cousins, that’s the reason why I’m here but it’s about everybody.”

His involvement in raising awareness about sickle cell and blood disorder cures is largely through Be The Match’s new Heritage Holds the Cure campaign, targeting the African American community, who have a disproportionately lower bone marrow donor sign-up rate. The lower rate is significant since African Americans, and Hispanics, both have the highest incidence rates of sickle cell disease. The campaign, headlined by Conley, seeks to highlight this and try to reverse the trend within the communities.

Conley is committed to working with Be The Match on the new campaign and doing what he can do to give back to his community and his family. Conley is also heavily involved in the Grizzlies foundation, being named an NBA Cares Award Finalist for his efforts.

“It’s been great to be an NBA Cares Award Finalist and that all the work I do in Memphis and around different cities is paying off slowly but surely, and every year you see the progress. I’m just proud to represent my team and to represent Memphis as a city,” the Buckeye said about his passion for giving back.

In addition to his off the court work, Conley is still focused on basketball, which showed this past season in what was a career-best year. After signing one of the largest contracts in NBA history, Conley put up career best numbers averaging roughly 20 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 assists per game.

Conley explained the reasoning behind last year’s success, “I think if anything changed it was just my role. With a new coaching staff and offensive scheme, it allowed me to really show what I can do offensively and allow me to show what I’ve been working on the past few years. I think my game didn’t necessarily improve just the opportunity was there to show different things.”

The Buckeye also doesn’t shy away from being a positive role model on the court; he’s a 2-time NBA Sportsmanship Award winner. For Conley, “Being a sportsmen of the year means you don’t yell a lot, being a role model, don’t get a technical. Currently I don’t have a technical. You take pride in that kind of work, it doesn’t just show who you are but who your family is.”

His Grizzlies this last season lost 4-2 in the first round of the playoffs but things are looking up for one of the youngest teams in the NBA. Asked what they need to get to the next level Conley explained, “I think number one, we have to continue to develop our young talent. I think we have some great guys we have drafted over the years that haven’t gotten the chance to play yet, so once they get the opportunity they have to be ready to go. With injuries that happen every season no matter what team you’re a part of, your team has to be ready to play. Hopefully over the summer we can get our young guys to the point where they’re contributing and really helping our team.”

Despite his success in Memphis, Buckeye fans know Conley mostly for his standout career as a Buckeye. Despite only playing in college for one year, his work as an All-American point guard for Ohio State in 2006-2007 is what stands out. Leading a team as a freshman that included Greg Oden, Daequan Cook, and Jamar Butler, among others, to a NCAA finals appearance was an incredible achievement.

Riding the high of the incredible year Conley left for the NBA, he told me about his one-and-done decision, “It was very hard, it took a lot of thought and because I loved school and the college environment and the campus was very electric that year. It was a fun year to be in Columbus, I probably thought in my mind that’s what it was going to be like every year. It was hard to weigh my options leaving that behind to chase my dreams in the NBA. It has worked out for sure.” The move clearly paid off for him as the additional development time in the NBA helped him reach where he is now.

Conley still has a connection to the OSU Basketball program, he keeps in touch with Oden, and teammates Mark Titus and Matt Twillinger regularly, but also had his own thoughts on the highly-publicized state of the program.

Conley said on the past few years of Buckeye basketball, “I’ve been following them and unfortunately it’s been a rough few seasons. It’s tough, you have guys who transfer, and guys who leave after one year like D’Angelo, similar to what I did. You recruit these guys to help and hopefully stay but they’re so talented they end up leaving and you’re left with a void and if you can’t fill that quick enough you’re left with seasons like the Buckeyes have had over the past few years.”

This interview was conducted before the Thad Matta firing but Conley revered Matta saying, “Thad’s a great guy, a great coach, he’s one of the best (coaches) in the game, and you just hope that players still want to come to the school and the value of playing under a guy like Thad.”

For Conley, basketball also isn’t the end all be all, he wants to go back to school when he’s done, as teammate Greg Oden did. Outside of that one of his biggest passions is his golf game, which he works on at his backyard putting green and his trips to the course. Along those lines, he told me not to rule out him becoming a professional golfer after he’s done on the hardwood. With a handicap of 7 that would be a tall order but Conley is used to exceeding challenges and expectations.

Be the Match has launched their Heritage Holds the Cure Campaign to get more people tested and registered in the fight against Sickle Cell disease and blood disorders, to learn more and see how you can get a quick and easy test kit visit heritageholdsthecure.org.

MATTARITAVILLE FOUNDERS WANT TO SEE CAMPING RETURN TO THE SCHOTTENSTEIN CENTER'S SIDEWALKS

83014_h.png,qitok=02FFMdtA.pagespeed.ce.pEyu4R1ZCP.png

Not long ago, a driver passing by the Schottenstein Center on Lane Ave. on the eve of a big Buckeye basketball game would be treated to the sight of a small village of brightly colored nylon inhabiting the sidewalks outside Ohio State's home arena.

Rain, sleet, snow or shine, students would pitch tents in Mattaritaville — named affectionately after the now-former Ohio State head coach — for what was sometimes multiple nights before a game to ensure themselves front-row, courtside tickets in the NutHouse student section.

The tents first arrived during the 2011-12 season when the Buckeyes hosted Duke. A few students camped on the sidewalk outside of the Schottenstein Center the night before the game to get front row tickets to the blockbuster battle. The tradition grew over the next few years and at one during the 2012-13 season, Mattaritaville had 135 residents in 35 tents the night before Ohio State took on Indiana, with the first tents arriving nearly a week in advance.

The tent town got so big, a few of the students decided to make it an official student organization. With the right paperwork and the help of one Mattaritaville's founders, Cody Crowther, who a student employee in the Schottenstein Event Services Department at the time, the tent town took off.

Crowther worked with his supervisors at the Schottenstein Center to make sure students had access to power outlets and bathrooms inside the building and used the Twitter account to help coordinate food deliveries to campers and spread information.

For a few years, Mattaritaville was popping. Students would wait outside gates of the Schottenstein Center for days, essentially holding a multi-day tailgate. There was cornhole, beer, music, "Mattaritas," and almost always some sort of food item being delivered by someone wishing to show their support — the alumni association, the coaching staff, former associate athletic director Ben Jay or even the school's head IT guy. A few coaches and players would even make appearances to show their support to the students who often camped in sub-zero temperatures.

That's all changed, though. The past few years, Mattaritaville has been a ghost town. The Buckeyes haven't made the NCAA Tournament in two seasons, finished in the bottom half of the Big Ten and haven't really had a quality home win or a true star player since D'Angelo Russell. Students aren't even filling the student section, much less are they camping in sub-freezing temperatures for good seats.

With the hiring of Chris Holtmann, though, there's a renewed sense of optimism for the Buckeye basketball program. For the first time in years, it feels like Ohio State has felt a boost in recruiting and has a bright future ahead of it. Buckeye basketball fans hope Holtmann is the guy to bring Ohio State back to national prominence, and when that happens, the veterans of Mattaritaville hope the tents come back to the Schott.

"I would like to hope that Mattaritaville will be back with a vengeance once the team picks back up again," said Jake Johnson, the first official president of Mattaritaville. "I’m incredibly optimistic of our team’s future under Coach Holtmann, and with that success, I think we will see the demand for those prime front-row seats grow once again."

While the front-row seats undoubtedly provide a great view of the action, it also gives students a unique opportunity to interact with opposing players, coaches and referees, which led to some great memories.

Rob Barbush, a Mattaritaville veteran, recalled times when Tom Izzo admitted to him that he should have taken the Cleveland Cavaliers coaching job and audibly cursed to himself when he and his friends brought up his Werner Ladder dance. He also remembered a time when Mark Turgeon handed him his clipboard to draw up a play and another when he stole Tom Crean's diet coke from the table in front of him.

Ohio State made some offers over the weekend

Rashawn.0.jpg

The Buckeyes sent out offers to football and basketball prospects.

To say it’s been busy in Columbus, Ohio as of late would be more than an understatement. With camp season fully underway on campus for the football program and a newly hired staff starting their tenure for the men’s basketball team, there’s been little downtime. As this weekend brought a slew of top prospects to Ohio State’s football facility and the basketball program wasting no time in their recruiting efforts, there’s more than enough going on in the Ohio State athletics world.

Invading enemy territory

It’s no secret that Ohio State makes it a priority to recruit in-state Ohio players and the South especially for its football needs. However, when there is a top prospect in Michigan (behind enemy lines), Urban Meyer and Kerry Coombs have made it clear they’re going to do what it takes to fend off the Wolverines and Spartans. Fortunately, those two together have had a great deal of success up north.

This weekend, Ohio State hosted a one-day positional camp on Saturday that brought hundreds of prospects from Ohio and around the country to campus. With a whole celebrity style list of top prospects on hand, it’s always a great chance for Meyer and his staff to show off, easily, one of the top premier programs in the country.

Of the many visitors, Rashawn Williams (Detroit, MI / Martin Luther King) made the trek south to Columbus to camp for the Buckeyes and prove his talents are more than worth seeing. His trip to Columbus didn’t return void either as he took to Twitter to announce that his performance at camp was enough to land him his latest offer — and a big one at that from the Buckeyes.

Blessed to receive an offer from The Ohio State University #Buckeyes @CoachZachSmith pic.twitter.com/4rhNP4jRL9

— Rashawn Williams (@troule19) June 17, 2017

A current high school freshman, Williams only has one year of prep football under his belt, but his abilities are much more mature than his experience. A 6-foot-1, 185-pound receiver, Williams already has impressive size. With six current offers, Ohio State joins Kentucky, Syracuse, Central Michigan and Bowling Green, but with an OSU offer now in his pocket, it’s only a matter of time before more top programs come knocking at his door.

Bucks make the cut for 2019 DE

If it seems that Ohio State is making the cut on recruits top schools lists on the daily, it’s no coincidence; they are doing just that. As many of the top guys in the country announce their final list of schools before making their college choice, Ohio State’s football program almost always makes the cut.

Yesterday, the same was true when 2019 defensive end Stephen Herron Jr. (Louisville, KY / Trinity) trimmed his top schools list to 10. That list included Ohio State, along with Michigan, Stanford, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Texas and Alabama.

According to the 247sports crystal ball predictions, Ohio State leads the way with Michigan as the only other school with any votes.

TOP 10... pic.twitter.com/r4AOxOrKsw

— Stephen Herron, Jr (@stephenherron_) June 18, 2017

Ranked early as the top overall player in Kentucky for the 2019 class, Herron Jr. also checks in as a top 40 prospect at any position and the fourth best defensive end in the country. A composite four-star, Jr. will certainly be a huge “get” for whatever school he decides on, but luckily for Ohio State, things are sitting pretty well. Will Larry Johnson and his incredible reputation for defensive line recruiting continue? We will surely find out.

Another list, another success

In keeping with the trend, Ohio State made the cut yet again over the weekend when 2018 safety prospect, Isheem Young of Philadelphia, Penn. took to Twitter to announce his final six schools he will be deciding between when he commits on July 18.

July 18th i will be commiting to one of these schools.. ️eyond ️lessed!!

S T A Y T U N E D pic.twitter.com/BY8qixlfce

— 3k (@Isheemyoung) June 17, 2017

Ranked No. 12 at the safety position and the fourth best player in all of Pennsylvania for the 2018 class, Young, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound stud has the ability to be a great coverage safety, but can also come down hill and be a serious run-stopper. With nearly 30 offers, making a list of six is a high compliment for the Buckeyes. Also making the cut included, Penn State, Maryland, Alabama, Clemson and West Virginia.

While Young may have listed Ohio State, it’s important to note that the Buckeyes currently hold commitments from two stars at the position: Jaiden Woodbey and Josh Proctor. Both ranked in the top 10 in the country at the safety position, that may be the writing on the wall that Young heads elsewhere. As things sit now, Penn State is running away with the odds of landing their in-state prospect when it comes to the 247sports crystal ball predictions.

Time will tell, but anything is possible in the ever changing world of recruiting.

New staff wastes no time

Chris Holtmann hasn’t been at the helm of the Buckeye men’s basketball program for more than two weeks, but in Division 1 basketball, there’s little time to waste when it comes to getting a team in order. After bringing his Butler staff to Columbus with him, Holtmann and his gang have hit the ground running in their recruiting efforts as they begin to make this the start of what hopefully will be a positive tenure for both parties.

Over the weekend, Holtmann got right on track as he sent out two new offers to Georgia’s Will Richardson and Michigan’s Marcus Bingham Jr. With some ground to make up, this new Buckeye basketball staff has the excitement and drive to do whatever it takes to jump-start this program, and it looks as if the momentum has just started.

With prospects like Richardson and Bingham Jr., it’s easy to see that talent is going to be the priority as Richardson is currently ranked as the No. 8 best point guard in the country – easily showing his four-star status. Bingham Jr. himself is no slouch either, as his is currently a top 100 player in the country at any position and his the third best player from a very talent-rich state of Michigan.

Time will certainly tell how the Buckeyes favor with the likes of these two stars, but as Holtmann and staff have only touched the surface of their recruiting, it could be a very exciting time to follow Ohio State hoops.

LGHL Could the Big Ten add Utah in lacrosse?

Could the Big Ten add Utah in lacrosse?

One report stays the two sides are at least talking about it.

Nothing knives through the dead period of the offseason like some good ol’ fashioned conference realignment speculation, right? Now, at least one report has the Big Ten at least talking about adding another member.

Relax. We’re just talking about lacrosse. But still.

Recently, the University of Utah decided to take the plunge and become the westernmost program to play D1 lacrosse, joining Denver and Air Force as the only programs west of the Mississippi.

That’s cool news for Utah fans and for student-athletes, but it also means Utah is going to need to find a conference home, since the Pac-12 doesn’t sponsor the sport. And according to the Salt Lake Tribune, Utah is in “early talks with the ACC, Big Ten and Big East to join a conference.”

Yes, we know that Utah is in Salt Lake City, about 1,700 miles away from Columbus. But this isn’t a crazy thought.

The Big Ten is no longer a stranger to affiliate memberships to strengthen other sports. After all, Big Ten lacrosse includes Johns Hopkins, who does not participate in any other league sport. Big Ten hockey also recently added Notre Dame, and reportedly at least kicked the tires on Arizona State.

Utah isn’t in the AAU, but it is a big state flagship research university which, institutionally, isn’t that different from several other Big Ten schools. Forget TV markets... Utah isn’t a Big Ten expansion candidate generally, and the TV market for lacrosse is so small that adding a team outside the footprint doesn’t appreciably change anything for BTN, but the league could decide that adding a program in a growing city, giving their league schools another pathway towards recruiting the West, and balancing out the league a bit could be a good idea.

I personally think Utah is probably a better fit in the Big East or the ACC though, for whatever that’s worth.

The ACC, while full of historically excellent programs, only has five teams at the moment. While they’re not in danger of not sending squads to the NCAA Tournament, adding a team would give them the Tournament auto-bid that they lack at the moment.

The Big East has the closest thing to a geographic rival to Utah (Denver, who also happens to be a powerhouse), and has conference games that might be a little closer to Utah’s competitive level, at least to start, in teams like Georgetown or St. John’s. College Crosse, our lacrosse blog, agrees.

The Big Ten, on the other hand, may be the pound for pound best lacrosse league in the country, at least at the moment. Maryland is the defending national champ. Ohio State was the national runner-up, and looks poised to become a lasting power in the sport. Rutgers has been a Top-15 mainstay recently, Penn State has become excellent, and Hopkins is Hopkins. The only bad program in the conference has been Michigan... a school that isn’t exactly lacking for resources and could turn things around quickly.

Utah is going to face a stiff learning curve jumping to D1 no matter what, but a move to the Big Ten probably means a fair amount of Ls going Utah’s way in the short term.

As for the long term? There’s also the possibility that Utah could just join the Pac-12, should other schools follow their lead. From the Tribune, again:

{Utah Athletic Director Chris} Hill said he thinks several Pac-12 programs may be "on the edge" of adding men's lacrosse (five Pac-12 schools have women's teams), but by being first to the table, the Utes could force their Western competitors to play catch-up.

That’s the other factor to consider. Utah is probably a few years away from contending for NCAA bids. In that time, other Western schools could decide to enter the fray, and give Utah a geographical partner, just like Arizona State would like for hockey. I’m not sure the Big Ten, Big East or ACC should look at Utah as a school that’s likely to stick around for decades to come.

Would Utah be a weird geographic fit? Yeah, but that happens in lacrosse. Ohio State used to play with Denver and Air Force, after all. But hey, maybe the Big Ten eventually becomes like the British Empire, where the sun never sets. Would they have a tough road in the short term? Probably, yeah.

But it might be fun. And Salt Lake is a cool city, no matter what you read on the internet.

And if nothing else, these conversations show the Big Ten is willing to think outside the box to help out their other sports. And that’s a positive thing, in my humble opinion.
