Banks comes to to OSU from the Indianapolis Colts.

Today, Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann announced the hiring of Quadrian Banks as the program’s new strength and conditioning coach.

Banks most recently worked for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, but previously served as the director of athletic performance at Gardner Webb University, were Holtmann coached before moving to Butler.

Of the hire, Holtmann said, “I am very excited about the addition of Quadrian. He is an elite strength coach and has extensive experience working with athletes at the highest level... He is high-energy, knowledgeable, committed and thrilled about being a part of The Ohio State University.”

Banks has previously worked with four other NCAA men’s basketball programs, beginning with Texas’ 2003 Final Four team. Throughout his career, Banks has also worked at the Universities of Richmond and Mississippi, as well as with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Banks said, “My family and I are extremely grateful and excited for the opportunity to join the Buckeye family. I look forward to getting to work."

Considering that OSU’s basketball roster is currently on the disturbingly thin side, Banks will have his work cut out for him to get the team’s nine players ready to physically withstand the increased minutes in the traditionally bruising Big Ten.

Multiple OSU hockey graduates have signed AHL contracts while others are at NHL development camps.

In case you forgot, the Ohio State men’s hockey team went on a run and snuck into the NCAA Tournament last season. But with the success of a veteran-laden team, came graduations and NHL interest. And Ohio State has not lacked either so far in this offseason.

First the graduates. Nick Schilkey, the team’s captain and second leading scorer, has signed with the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. The Checkers’ home arena is called the Bojangles Coliseum so I am now a fan of theirs. Schilkey should score well in the league being over-age, as he turns 23 in 2017, and hopefully gain a look from the parent club.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) July 5, 2017

Matt Tomkins, one of the starters in the goaltending tandem last season, has latched on with the AHL’s Rockford Icehogs, the AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks, the team that drafted Tomkins in the seventh round in 2012.

David Gust, a late bloomer who came on in his junior and senior seasons, signed with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors back in May. The Condors are the AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks. Congrats to David on getting to live in the O.C.; I hope he doesn’t get beaten up on a beach during his first night there like in the pilot episode of The O.C.

He’s also apparently going by Dave now, since he’s gotten too cool for us already out there.

Welcome aboard! Chad Butcher, Evan Polei, and Dave Gust have signed #AHL deals for this season #Condorstown >> https://t.co/OpLakxPMfJ pic.twitter.com/FJ8nWbkD2p

— Bakersfield Condors (@Condors) May 2, 2017

Josh Healey signed, unsurprisingly, with the truculence loving Flames and Brian Burke. Someone who was suspended for shots to the head should not be saying things like this, but at least he found the right team if this is what he’s going for:

#Flames D prospect Josh Healey on his love of hitting: "Some guys want to score goals or make a sick play, I just want to blow some kid up."

— Darren Haynes (@DarrenWHaynes) July 4, 2017

In more surprising news than Josh Healey wanting to maim other players, Mason Jobst was in attendance at Pittsburgh Penguins development camp. The team’s leading scorer could be a candidate for the Hobey Baker trophy next season if he continues his upward scoring trend against younger players -- but hey, if you can find a way to team with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin up the middle, you do it.

Two of @NCAAIceHockey's top guns at #Pens development camp: Zach Aston-Reese (Northeastern), Mason Jobst (Ohio State) pic.twitter.com/G9QgepqevN

— Matt Gajtka (@MattGajtka) June 28, 2017

Unsurprisingly, Dakota Joshua is attending Leafs development camp as he is a former fifth round pick of the team. Tanner Laczynski is going to Flyers camp this week as a former sixth rounder last year. Miguel Fidler was expected to attend Panthers development camp but is recovering from injury.

If any other OSU players turn up at NHL team camps or are signed any time soon, Land-Grant Holy Land will be there to give you the news, as well as any news of a field trip to Bojangles Coliseum to protest in favor of Raising Cane’s.

It’s never too soon to start stocking up for the future. That’s why the Buckeyes are starting their efforts now for the No. 1 OLB in 2019.

Today marks being only 55 days from the kickoff to Ohio State’s 2017 football season. With a little bit of a bitter taste from the end of the 2016 season, it’s not too surprising to see the Ohio State coaching staff and players amped up for the highly anticipated 2017 season. With this season’s lofty expectations, just like every season in Columbus, Urban Meyer knows the rest of this summer and into fall camp has to be clicking on all cylinders for his team to be fully prepared. One thing that seemingly never stops clicking on all of those cylinders is the efforts Ohio State is placing into recruiting. With each and everyday a new type of success story in some way, it’s a great time to be a Buckeye fan.

It’s never too soon

Let’s be real clear: the first and foremost priority for Urban Meyer and his staff in recruiting is looking at the present class of 2018. However, when you’re Ohio State, and seeing the type of success that you are, it’d be silly not to entertain the class of 2019 if there’s a genuine interest in one of the nation’s top young prospects.

Owen Pappoe (Grayson/Loganville, GA) is that 2019 prospect the Buckeyes are interested in. Yesterday, Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts wrote a piece on Pappoe and his current relationship with Ohio State and what is next on the recruiting circuit for him and the Buckeyes. With two Georgia natives currently already committed to Ohio State in the 2018 class with Emory Jones and Brenton Cox, the Peach State has a rich tradition being linked to Ohio State and these two are hoping it continues after they’re already well into their Buckeye careers with a guy such as Pappoe in the mix for 2019.

Urban Meyer is receiving help in his efforts to bring country's No. 1 class of 2019 OLB @opfreak15 to #OhioState https://t.co/DifyBLx2zu

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) July 6, 2017

The 6-foot, 210-pound monster is only 16 years of age, but boasts a high four-star ranking that will surely be a five-star title when all is said and done. Listed as the top overall outside linebacker in the 2019 class, Pappoe is also the top prospect in the talent-rich state of Georgia. With 40 offers already, it’s easy to see why Owen is the top at his position and, according to Bill Kurelic, Owen has every intention of visiting Columbus, Ohio, again in the near future to check-in on the Buckeyes.

As things stand right now, the early favorites on the 247sports crystal ball predictions have Florida State and Clemson as the leaders in this recruitment—but Pappoe has made no secret of his interest in Ohio State. With Urban Meyer’s track record in Georgia and historic recruiting success, it may just be a matter of time before Ohio State joins the fold as a serious threat to land another top prospect.

Bucks make the cut for 4-star

Ohio State’s incredible 2018 class already has commitments from two offensive linemen in Max Wray and Matthew Jones. With the ever so popular recruiting sage of in-state Ohio top prospect Jackson Carman, the top offensive tackle in the 2018 class, Ohio State is hoping to keep the best at home if they can fend off Clemson and USC as the top threats. That alone would be a triple threat for any recruiting class, but when Meyer and his staff are doing this well with their recruiting efforts, more are sure to be interested in joining the fold.

Yesterday, four-star offensive tackle prospect Darrell Simpson (Northwest/Justin, TX) released his top eight schools via his Twitter account and let it be known that a commitment date will soon follow. The 6-foot-7, 340-pound monster of a tackle has over 20 offers, and that’s no surprise as he grades out as a top 15 tackle in the country for 2018.

Now there is 8, but commitment date coming soon...and then there will be 1... pic.twitter.com/u3zwjJWjfM

— Darrell Simpson™ (@king_simpson34) July 7, 2017

Making the cut included TCU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. As stated earlier, the Buckeyes have quite the package deal with their two commitments and look to land another so the “is there room” scenario may be tricky when it comes to Simpson. However, with every indication currently pointing to Oklahoma as the landing spot for Darrell, that may not be a factor after all. Time will tell, but Simpson doesn’t currently seem to be leaning towards Ohio State.

The turmoil in the program over the last few months has already cost the Buckeyes two of the top four Ohio recruits in the 2018 class.

It looks like the cost of Ohio State basketball's June coaching change could be a great 2018 Ohio recruiting class https://t.co/QOFc7Omb6r

— Bill Landis (@BillLandis25) July 6, 2017

What a difference just a few months can make. After Ohio State’s 2016-17 season ended in March with a loss to Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament, there were plenty of questions surrounding Thad Matta and the program, but the future looked bright with a number of top Ohio recruits in the fold. Then the dominoes started to fall in April when Darius Bazley, the top recruit from Ohio in the 2018 recruiting class, decommitted from Ohio State. The on-court and recruiting issues of the Buckeyes were just too much for Bazley to ignore, and earlier this week he committed to Syracuse.

After Ohio State and Thad Matta parted ways last month, Dane Goodwin, the fourth-ranked recruit in Ohio in the 2018 recruiting class, decided to explore his options and decommitted from Ohio State. While Goodwin did give new head coach Chris Holtmann a chance to state the case for him to recommit to the Buckeyes, the Upper Arlington native decided to commit to Notre Dame, instead.

All is not lost for Ohio State when it comes to the 2018 recruiting class, though. It is likely that the Buckeyes will be a part of 4-star guard Dwayne Cohill’s Top 10 list on Friday. Cohill already has a bit of a relationship with Holtmann, who was recruiting Cohill when he was still the head coach at Butler. Four-star wing Jerome Hunter is considering Ohio State as well. There might be some early growing pains with Holtmann in Columbus as he tries to assemble his team, but if Ohio State is able to hit on these recruits, momentum could shift in the favor of the Buckeyes quickly.

“Raekwon [McMillan] was one of my favorite players in this class.”

-Luke Easterling, Editor of Draft Wire via Antwan Staley, Dolphins Wire

Former Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan hasn’t even made it to training camp with the Miami Dolphins yet, but the expectations are already high for the former Buckeye. McMillan has impressed during Miami’s organized team activities and team minicamp so far, as he’s gotten plenty of reps with linebacker Koa Misi still recovering from offseason neck surgery. With Misi on the sidelines for now, McMillan has been training at every linebacker position, including middle linebacker.

While it is projected that Lawrence Timmons will start at middle linebacker for the Dolphins, it is looking more and more likely that McMillan is in line to win one of the outside linebacker starting positions, opposite Kiko Alonso. This likely won’t come as much of a surprise to those who watched McMillan during his time at Ohio State, as the linebacker was the Buckeye’s top tackler the past two seasons. Even though there will likely be some adjustment to the speed of the NFL, McMillan’s football IQ should help him transition quicker than most, and he should be able to make a name for himself early on in his NFL career.

Counting down the Top 100 Big Ten football players: The Top 10 https://t.co/h4T9KPvnB3 pic.twitter.com/t9Kc33Kmmc

— Land Of 10 (@landof10) July 5, 2017

The fine folks over at Land of 10 recently ranked the Top 100 Big Ten football players ever, and on Wednesday they capped off their list with the Top 10. To the surprise of no one, Ohio State is featured prominently in the Top 10, with Buckeyes taking home three of those spots. The first Buckeye in the Top 10 is Howard “Hopalong” Cassady, who was ranked as the ninth best Big Ten player in history. Cassady won the Heisman Trophy in 1955, and at the time, his margin of victory was the largest in history.

Coming in at sixth on the list was offensive lineman Orlando Pace. It was evident early on that Pace would make quite an impact in Columbus when he became just the second true freshman ever to start for Ohio State in the season opener. Pace not only won the Lombardi Award in 1995 and 1996, but he also took home the Outland Trophy in 1996. During the 1996 season, Pace finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting, marking the highest finish for an offensive or defensive lineman since Hugh Green finished second in 1980.

Topping the list of the best players in Big Ten history is the only player to win the Heisman Trophy twice, running back Archie Griffin. During Griffin’s time with Ohio State, the Buckeyes never dropped below ninth in the rankings, and won the Big Ten in each of Griffin’s four years. Griffin rushed for at least 100 yards in 31 straight games, a record which still stands. Griffin amassed 5,589 rushing yards as a Buckeye, a school record that likely will never be broken.

Taking a look at the most important Buckeyes for the 2017 season, beginning with number 10.

When looking at the 2017 depth chart compared to the 2016 depth chart, there are noticeable holes, but the team is in a much better place now than it was entering the 2016 season after a mass exodus of NFL departures and graduation. Using key departures, spotlighting players at important positions, leadership qualities and recognizing the depth at each position, we came up with the 10 most important players on the team. They may not be the most heralded players, or even the best players, but they will be vital to this team’s on-field success.

No. 10: Sean Nuernberger

Position: Place kicker

2016 stats: After winning place kicking duties on the National Championship team as a true freshman in 2014, Nuernberger lost the job in 2015 to graduate transfer Jack Willoughby and then again in 2016 to Tyler Durbin, a former soccer player from James Madison.

Why he’s No. 10: After Nuernberger lost the 2016 kicking duties to Durbin, the former soccer player started his lone starting season by hitting his first 16 field goals, until the Michigan game where he went 1-for-3, before finishing the season 0-for-2 against Clemson. As we have learned throughout Urban Meyer’s tenure, there won’t be very many high-pressured kicks, but they always have one-or-two games that will come down to a field goal, and Buckeye fans will not forget the last two games of last season. Nuernberger has been perfect on extra points (106-of-106), but he has struggled from distance, going 16-for-24 on field goals.

From a non-place kicking point of view, it’s clear that he does not have the leg strength for kickoffs, however he could win the job with accuracy for coffin corner kickoffs — which have been the staple of Ohio State’s special teams. With Nuernberger being the only experienced specialist on the depth chart, it’s possible he could get the call there.

Most importantly, will Nuernberger have his confidence restored for 2017, or was his confidence shattered from losing his job in back-to-back years? With the uber-talented true-freshman Blake Haubeil breathing on his neck, it’s time for Nuernberger to win the job and not let go of it. The highly touted kicker will be counted on to hit every extra point, while connecting on just about every field goal attempt. Depending on the timing of the missed kicks, if the Kentucky native can replicate Durbin’s 17-of-22 (77-percent) season, he will have lived up to expectations for this season.

Check back next week for No. 9 and No. 8

Discussing a big weekend for Ohio State recruiting on this week’s podcast.

The Opening Finals is one of the premier college football recruiting events each year, and future Ohio State Buckeyes are oftentimes the center of attention. This past weekend was no different. Eight Ohio State commits were present in Beaverton, Ore. as over 160 of the nation’s best recruits took to the field to showcase their skills in the highly competitive environment.

On this edition of The Hangout in the Holyland, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn discuss why they think the event does a good job identifying prospects (3:08), what impressed them most from the Ohio State group —including the standout performances by all-purpose back Jaelen Gill and defensive tackle Taron Vincent— (7:46), uncommitted prospects at the event on Ohio State’s radar (13:37), and where the Buckeyes’ class stands two weeks before the annual Friday Night Lights showcase in Columbus.

They also discuss SB Nation’s All-Opening team (16:10), if the 2018 class is starting to have a noticeable theme (17:52), and Patrick’s predictions for the rest of the recruiting cycle (20:45).

You can find the podcast on our iTunes page, and we strongly encourage reviews, comments, criticisms, etc. to help us deliver the best possible audio product.
