Two defensive linemen and a running back made the top-50 list.

“With new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson in the fold, expectations are sky high for Weber this year.”

-ESPN Staff

There are currently an estimated 15,000 college football players spread among 128 Division I programs. Of those, just over 250 are selected each year in the NFL Draft. With so many players on so many teams, it is difficult to gage talent across the board, but some players make such an outstanding impact for their teams that there is little doubt of them being counted among the best college players of the season. ESPN, partnering with Microsoft Research and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, conducted a poll which pitted players at different positions directly against one another in order to determine the “official” rankings. The list reflected includes rankings for No. 26-50, with the top-25 coming out tomorrow.

Given Ohio State’s position as a top-five team in both the polls and in recruiting, it is unsurprising to see several Buckeyes listed among the nation’s top players heading into 2017. Coming in at No. 46, running back Mike Weber is the lowest of the ranked Ohio State players. The rising sophomore earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors last season after rushing for more than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. Weber was all the more impressive given that his performance came on the heels of the departure of first-round pick and Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Next on the list for Ohio State are a pair of defensive ends in Tyquan Lewis (No. 36) and Sam Hubbard (No. 31). Both bring versatility to a loaded defensive line, which is expected to be one of (if not the) best units in the nation. While Lewis’s size and strength make him an excellent run-stopper, Hubbard, who played safety in high school in Cincinnati, brings the ability to both rush the quarterback or to drop back in coverage.

“Right now, the guy who performed like a starter is Damon Webb. He had his best stretch of football that I’ve ever seen in him...He’s going to come back and have a great senior year.”

-Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

The loss of three first-round picks in the Ohio State secondary means that rebuilding will, naturally, be a tall order for that particular position group. What makes the replacement especially troublesome is the loss of safety Malik Hooker to the NFL after just one season as a starter--and what a season it was. Hooker was a unanimous first-team All-American with seven picks on the season, three of which he returned for touchdowns, and he made plays unequalled by any other safety in the country. He was part of a crew that finished third nationally in pass efficiency defense. With both starting cornerbacks also departing in Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley, the lone returning starter in the secondary is safety Damon Webb, a former four-star recruit from Michigan. An honorable mention All-Big Ten safety last season, Webb is entering his senior season and second year as a starter in Columbus. Defensive coordinator Greg Schiano had high praise for Webb in the spring, acknowledging that he has entered into his “best stretch of football,” and expressed optimism for his senior season.

While it seems unlikely that Webb can match Hooker’s feats on his own, he’ll have some assistance in fellow senior Erick Smith, who has earned accolades from former Ohio State safety Tyvis Powell before the 2015 season. One of the more experienced safeties remaining on the roster, Smith has played extensively as a backup at Ohio State. Even so, sophomore Jordan Fuller and incoming freshman Isaiah Pryor are still in the running for the starting role. Smith, Fuller and Pryor all have outstanding talent, but the question remains as to their ability to mesh with Webb opposite them, as well as the rest of the secondary. With the combined talents of the group, the secondary might be able to reach the level of the 2016 unit.

“The Buckeyes are an interesting combination of experience and youth. At key positions...Ohio State has plenty of proven talent. At others, they simply have plenty of unproven talent.”

-Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State’s season opener against Indiana is just a month away, with fall camp starting this week. And while many of the positions and units would seem to be well-oiled machines by this point (e.g., the defensive line), others have a number of questions remaining that will need to be resolved before August 31.

For starters is the wealth of young talent in the 2016 and 2017 recruiting classes. Last season, Urban Meyer was not shy about putting freshmen in the game, playing 11 true freshmen from the 2016 class. This change of heart came just a year after Meyer redshirted 21 of 25 freshmen in the 2015 class. All told, the Buckeyes had a whopping 44 freshmen on the roster last season, with nearly 30 seeing the field. With more highly-touted prospects coming in this season, several could see the field and some could even compete for starting roles.

While senior J.T. Barrett had the quarterback job on lockdown, his primary receivers remain a question, especially under Kevin Wilson’s new offensive scheme. Terry McLaurin, K.J. Hill and Johnnie Dixon all had good spring practices. Interestingly, all three have been with the program for at least three seasons, Hill as a redshirt sophomore and McLaurin and Dixon as juniors, but none have yet made the impact expected of three former four-star recruits. Binjimen Victor and Parris Campbell, after showing flashes of greatness last season, are expected to contribute more heading into the fall, with Campbell the supposed replacement for Curtis Samuel at H-back.

One of the other key positions to be filled is Billy Price’s vacated spot at right guard. And Meyer says there are still seven possible candidates for the job.Fortunately, the rest of the line remains stable, with Price at center, Jamarco Jones at left tackle, Michael Jordan at left guard and Isaiah Prince at right tackle.

Taking a look at how the Buckeyes are doing at their first training camp in the league.

We are just a few weeks away from the regular season kick-off of the 2017 NFL season, and there are quite a few former Ohio State stars looking forward to their professional debut.

The Buckeyes had another impressive draft class, with seven rookies picked in the seven rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft, and one other signed as an undrafted free agent — it was almost four, but Dontre Wilson never landed a contract with the Chargers due to medical concerns with his foot. Craig Fada was invited to the Houston Texans minicamp, but didn’t come away with a contract, and the same for wideout Corey Smith who tried out for the Cincinnati Bengals but didn’t sign a deal (h/t Rebecca Toback, CincyJungle).

As they get ready for their first Big Time game against, and with, players they’ve watched and idolized for years, they first need to find their place on a roster, as teams are now reporting for training camp.

Noah Brown

The wide receiver was one of the first rookies to report to training camp this fall, with the Cowboys suiting up for the Hall of Fame game this Thursday. The Cowboys will face the Cardinals in Canton, Ohio for the annual event, with Brown expected to see his first bit of playing time at the next level.

Gareon Conley

At the start of training camp, Conley still needed to sign on the dotted line, but it didn’t take long before the rookie had finalized his first NFL contract with the Oakland Raiders. However, it can’t all be good news, Conley opened camp on the Raiders PUP list.

Pat Elflein

Originally slated as a guy who could move all over the line, Elflein is staring down the starting center job for the Minnesota Vikings. He’s gotten some reps with the first team early on in camp, and is competing with Nick Easton for the role. If he’s anything like the Buckeye centers to come before him — Nick Mangold and Corey Linsley — Elflein will be the longterm solution for the team at the center position.

Malik Hooker

After spending most of the offseason and spring on the sidelines, Hooker was excited to get to work for the Colts. Alongside four of his fellow Buckeyes, he was looking to join Tyvis Powell in the defensive backfield and make contributions for the team right away.

That goal was short lived after tweaking his hamstring early-on in training camp. He was placed on the Colts PUP list for a few days, but was removed over the weekend. Hopefully, the injury wasn’t more than a flair-up and Hooker can get back on the field as soon as possible.

Cameron Johnston (UDFA)

The Buckeye punter is still hanging in there at Philadelphia Eagles training camp. The team already has a solid starter in Donnie Jones, but the 37-year old veteran could be hanging up his cleats soon, and if so.... enter Aussie-punter extraordinaire Cam Johnston.

While some aren’t expecting Johnston to make the final 53-man roster, or even make the practice squad, I’m a bit more optimistic. Despite Jones saying he’s got about four more years in the league, they wont necessarily be with the Eagles. And with the organization turning to younger talent at several positions, they’d be smart to keep their next No. 1 connected with the team.

— BGN Radio (@BGN_Radio) July 29, 2017
Marshon Lattimore

One of the Buckeye rookies expected to make the starting lineup right away, Lattimore is already impressing the New Orleans Saints. With the team quickly filling up with former Scarlet and Gray players, Lattimore joins Vonn Bell on the defensive side of the ball, with the rookie switching his jersey from No. 34 to No. 23 — Lattimore wore No. 2 at Ohio State.

Our friends at Canal Street Chronicles took in some of Lattimore’s training camp performance.

Marshon Lattimore had some good moments in practice again, forcing a fumble on Daniel Lasco, and he had a couple of good plays setting the edge. In some coverages, he was playing a good 9 yards off the receiver, but that didn’t seem to be an issue at all.

There was some concern during camp on Monday, when Lattimore went back to the locker room with the training staff. He did not return to practice, however head coach Sean Payton didn’t mention a specific injury, just that it might’ve been a hydration issue, but he wasn’t sure.

Raekwon McMillan

The linebacker is already taking reps with the first team, and despite being the new guy on the block, is already calling out plays when it’s his turn in the middle linebacker rotation. No one from Buckeye Nation should be surprised to hear that McMillan is the likely “Next Man Up” to represent #LBU, but the time he commits off the field to learning the playbook and improving his craft, could make him one of the best to come out of Ohio State.

Raekwon McMillan on adjustment to NFL from college pic.twitter.com/3y90m5GqRw

— Chris Perkins (@chrisperk) July 31, 2017

He’s had to make a lot of adjustments, and admits the tempo has increased immensely, but McMillan was always been solid mentally, and that foundation will help him ease into his new role as NFL linebacker.

Curtis Samuel

The Carolina Panthers may have had one of the best draft classes of any team this year. Not only did they snag Ohio State H-back Curtis Samuel, but they also snagged running back Christian McCaffrey to boost their offense. Quarterback Cam Newton will have no shortage of targets this fall, with Samuel lining up predominantly at receiver.

Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) still being held out of practice.

— Steve Reed (@SteveReedAP) July 29, 2017

Samuel has been held out of the past few days of practice, but hasn’t been added to the team’s PUP list, yet. With the Panther’s trading or not re-signing both Buckeye receivers Ted Ginn Jr. and Corey “Philly” Brown this offseason, they’ll definitely need Samuel’s versatility to fill some of the offensive holes.

Our 2017 Opponent Preview Series Podcasts continue with a preview of the Rebels

As far as Ohio State is concerned, the most important football played in Las Vegas happens to be at the high school level, rather than in college. UNLV Head Coach Tony Sanchez is looking to change that.

When Sanchez took the job in December 2014, he was leaving behind a high school football powerhouse at Bishop Gorman, and taking over a program that had been to just four bowl games in its history. While they haven’t been able to get to the postseason yet, the Rebels are on the rise heading into 2017.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holyland, Colton Denning is joined by Ray Brewer of the Las Vegas Sun, and gets his insights on why Sanchez has the program on the upswing, and the surprising depth of good head coaches currently in the Mountain West Conference.

Ray breaks down why 2017 could be the year UNLV gets back to a bowl, and everything you need to know about the team, including:

  • The hype surrounding redshirt freshman quarterback Armani Rogers.
  • Why the Rebels will have an explosive run game again this season.
  • Getting key contributors back at wide receiver.
  • Needing new faces to step up on defense.
  • Building for 2018, sharing a stadium with the Raiders, and more!

The Buckeyes will have to wait to land a top 2018 defensive end.

Despite rumors that he would commit in the coming weeks, one of the Ohio State Buckeyes' top remaining class of 2018 prospects will hold off on announcing his college commitment for now.

With many believing he would select between either Ohio State, Notre Dame, or Penn State soon, four-star defensive end Jayson Oweh will now wait to pick his college destination until the Under Armour All-American game.

My family and I have come to the decision that I'll be committing to a school at The Under Armour All-American Game.#IWILL @DemetricDWarren

— Clout J (@JaysonOweh) July 28, 2017

Oweh, who suits up at Blair Academy in Blairstown, NJ, had made visits to all three programs this month. Pushing back his pledge helps other programs move in and try to pursue the 6'5, 236-pounder, making guesses his college plans even harder.

Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes already hold verbal commitments from Brenton Cox and Andrew Chatfield, but that isn’t keeping them from trying to secure other pass rushing threats in their 2018 class.

Other than Oweh, Ohio State is also actively recruiting linemen such as Micah Parsons and Tyreke Smith.

Who will end up in the Scarlet and Gray? I guess we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out. Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

Buckeyes dish out new offers

Out on the recruiting trail checking in on most of their top targets on the AAU circuit, newly hired Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann and his group of assistant coaches offered a pair of the top hoopers in the state of Ohio over the weekend.

Watching his recruitment starting to take off after flying under the radar, Jaxson Hayes, a 6'10 power forward out of Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, added Ohio State to growing list of scholarship offers on Friday.

Now holding offers from not just Ohio State, but also programs such as Texas, Xavier, Illinois, Purdue, TCU, and New Mexico, the 2018 big man is starting to be a hot commodity on the recruiting scene.

— Jaxson Hayes™ (@hayes_jaxson) July 29, 2017

Though he's starting to set up college visits, Hayes has yet to schedule a trip to Columbus, but has plans to make trips to Butler, Xavier, and Texas soon.

While he might not be a 2018 prospect, 2019 Cleveland Villa Angela St. Joseph small forward Alonzo Gaffney also locked in an offer from Holtmann and company on Friday.

OBC Alonzo Gaffney received the offer from Ohio State @sonnyjohnson32 pic.twitter.com/U5TX7BGPxY

— Reggie Lewis (@ReggieLewis_12) July 28, 2017

Like Hayes, the 6'8 Gaffney has his fair share of college opportunities currently on the table. With offers from programs spread out across the country, OSU, Florida, Kansas, Louisville, and Penn State are just a few of the schools trying to add the Cleveland native to their roster at the moment.

Considered the 39th small forward and 121st-overall prospect in the 2019 class, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Gaffney was a key reason why Villa Angela St. Joseph walked away with a state title last season. As a sophomore leader for the Vikings, the standout averaged 14 points and six rebounds a contest.

Quick Hits

  • 2018 Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins won’t be heading to Columbus to play his college ball. Announcing his final two on Saturday, the four-star-rated Hawkins, an early Ohio State lean, is now down to Cincinnati and Penn State.
  • Theo Wease, a five-star-rated 2019 wide receiver, released his top 14 yesterday. Still fighting out for a pledge from the 6'3, 190-pounder are Ohio State, Arizona State, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, TCU, Texas, Utah, and Washington.
  • Five-star class of 2018 defensive end KJ Henry will reportedly cut his list from well over 25 potential landing spots down to five this evening. Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and Virginia Tech are just a few of the programs to offer the Clemmons, NC native a scholarship throughout the recruiting process.

Four head coaches in four years did little to help ‘El Guapo’ succeed.

“A talented and extremely elusive runner, Hyde has one year left on a contract signed three head coaches ago.”

-Gregg Rosenthal, Around the NFL

There has been some early talk about whether or not former Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde will make it through the 49ers training camp and onto their final 53-man roster. While he still has one year left on his rookie contract — seriously, it feels like he’s been in the NFL forever — he’s playing for his fourth head coach in as many years in the league.

All that turnover, coupled with his long history of injuries — nine, including two concussions and a late-season MCL tear in 2016 —, creates some doubt moving forward with the running back. Hyde will be looking for a longterm deal after the year, but will need to have consistent results throughout the season to garner any sort of big money interest.

So far, it looks like Hyde is impressing early in the fall, but the final roster cuts have yet to be made. The 49ers traded up during the 2017 NFL Draft to snag rookie rusher Joe Williams, which created a bit of urgency for Hyde heading into camp.

John Lynch with praise for #49ers RB Carlos Hyde:

"Carlos Hyde looks tremendous. He's really dedicated himself."

— Joe Fann (@Joe_Fann) July 27, 2017

There’s still a lot of mileage left in Hyde, having only seen snaps in 34 games over the past three seasons, but he’ll need to stay healthy if he has any shot of extending his career.

"When the Bills brought Cardale Jones in to tell him he was traded to the Chargers, he began crying. He began crying tears of joy"

-Adam Schefter, via Mike & Mike, ESPN Radio

Old 12-gauge spent his rookie season in the NFL as the third-string option for the Buffalo Bills behind Tyrod Taylor and E.J. Manuel. Despite his ranking, he had a good rapport with head coach Rex Ryan and was still considered a future option for the team.

Then, the Bills decided to part ways with Ryan and ended up drafting another rookie quarterback during the 2017 NFL Draft. With another QB competition getting ready to heat up, Jones was called into the front office and told that he was traded — for a conditional draft pick -- to the Los Angeles Chargers.

From feet of snow to sand-filled beaches, the move to the West Coast apparently made the Buckeye very happy. Not only would he be joining former teammates Joey Bosa and Joshua Perry in Los Angeles, but he’d have a chance to be the automatic No. 2 guy behind Philip Rivers.

“With the Bills set to start training camp this week, defensive tackle Adolphus Washington took care of some legal business on Monday.”

-Josh Alper, ProFootball Talk

Earlier in July, Buckeye Adolphus Washington was cited with improperly carrying a concealed weapon after a scary encounter with Cincinnati police.

A police report cited above by ProFootball Talk, says Washington “reached for and displayed a gun while sitting inside his vehicle, just feet away from officers.” Video of encounter was later released, showing the police officer telling the Buckeye how lucky he was that the situation didn’t escalate after seeing his firearm.

“I believe the charges are factually and legally inappropriate,” Washington’s attorney Clyde Bennett told Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “I don’t believe that Mr. Washington committed any crimes. That is why we have filed a motion to dismiss. Our intent and plan is to have the charges against him dismissed.”

Washington has a pre-trial hearing set for August 1, after pleading not guilty to the misdemeanor charge earlier this week.

Hooker was expected to play a big role in the Colts secondary right away, but this might have put a wrench in that plan.

Colts first-round pick Malik Hooker tweaked his hamstring during conditioning test and has been placed on PUP.
