LGHL Ohio State’s offense is (slowly) getting back on track

Ohio State’s offense is (slowly) getting back on track

They got back to basics Saturday. Now we’ll see if the Buckeyes can build on it.

“We got back to what Ohio State’s offense is: Playing fast, getting the ball in space and making plays.”

-Ohio State receiver Parris Campbell, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

J.T. Barrett’s success in downfield passing against Army did not do much to quell naysayers disappointed in a lack of vertical passing. In several cases, he was inaccurate, and he often relied on short, quick tosses rather than waiting for the long throw. Despite finishing with a QBR of 88.3, completing 25 of 33 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns (with no picks), Barrett’s longest completion was for just 31 yards to tight end Marcus Baugh in the third quarter. These factors beg the question: Can the offense be successful when it comes to the vertical passing game?

The fact is that the offense was exposed against Oklahoma. The more the unit forced the downfield threat, the less successful it became as it shifted from a balanced run-pass attack to a pass-heavy game plan. The Buckeyes’ natural success is in the run game. With freshman J.K. Dobbins and sophomore Mike Weber at tailback, and Barrett running the option, the threat on the ground is hard to contain for many opposing defenses. Building from the run game, Barrett has always found success with short passes, often because he has not had the personnel to go downfield to. On Saturday, 15 of Barrett’s 25 completion were at or behind the line of scrimmage. Eventually, in tandem, success in these areas helps to open up the rest of the field, keeping opposing defenses on their toes.

There is no doubt that the Buckeyes need to work on their downfield passing, but key to success is remembering where the offense’s strengths lie, and that begins on the ground. Against Oklahoma, the Buckeyes relied too heavily on an area that was not their strength, and abandoned their bread-and-butter on offense. Those high-flying components on offense will come eventually, but Ohio State has a few weeks to work out the kinks before facing tough competition.

“I think the ceiling is higher for the Ohio State offense with Dwayne Haskins or Joe Burrow at the controls, but the floor is lower, too. Which one is more preferable?”

-Marcus Hartman, Dayton Daily News

Despite Ohio State’s win over Army Saturday, it was a rough weekend overall for football in Ohio, especially for quarterbacks. As Cincinnati and Cleveland both fell to 0-2 on the young NFL season, Andy Dalton and DeShone Kizer faced criticism and questions surrounding their role in the team’s failings. Dalton, the seasoned veteran, was outplayed by rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson, who had his first NFL start for the Texans. Kizer, meanwhile, was sidelined in his second start for Cleveland with a migraine, but still managed to throw three picks and a fumble in the direction of the Ravens.

J.T. Barrett, by comparison, had a great weekend, as he led the Buckeyes to a decisive win over Army in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The senior quarterback passed for two touchdowns and rushed for one more as he led what turned out to be a much more balanced attack than fans saw against Oklahoma last week. Still, questions remain as to whether Barrett has peaked, and if his performances against Oklahoma this season and Clemson last year are representative of what will happen when he is at the helm against the highest competition. Urban Meyer has not wavered in his loyalty to the fifth-year senior, and the offense, under Kevin Wilson, needs to adjust accordingly to Barrett’s skillset.

Freshman quarterback Dwayne Haskins was 4-for-4 for 46 yards when he came in the game for the final 10 offensive snaps Saturday, with Ohio State well in control against Army. While he may be the quarterback of the future after this season, many are looking for him to play a bigger role now. Haskins certainly has a lot of potential, but the fact remains that Barrett has an extremely high ceiling--even if he has already reached it--and it will be a challenge for any newcomer to be able to match that level of success.

“The biggest change came on defense, where the Buckeyes lined up in a 4-2-5 formation with three safeties on the field for all but their final defensive series of Saturday’s game.”

-Dan Hope, Eleven Warriors

The Ohio State defense looked a lot different Saturday than it has so far this season, due to injuries on the Buckeyes’ side and Army’s triple-option offense. After imposing a domineering “Rushmen” package the first two games of the season with five defensive linemen on the field, the Buckeyes pulled back against the Black Knights to load up on safeties. This new lineup also meant that senior defensive tackle Tracy Sprinkle, who missed most of the 2016 season due to injury, got his first start of 2017.

Senior safety Erick Smith was the main change in this new arrangement. He played the previous two games as the third safety in the Buckeyes’ rotation, but totalled 66 defensive snaps--a team high--against Army as one of three safeties on the field. Smith also continued his role on special teams on the kickoff unit. Fellow safeties Damon Webb and Jordan Fuller each played 62 defensive snaps leading up to the final defensive series of the game.

At linebacker, freshman Tuf Borland got his first defensive snaps as a Buckeye after Chris Worley left the game with a foot injury. He finished the game with 41 snaps, which was second on the unit behind Jerome Baker’s 60. Dante Booker came in for cleanup duty later in the game, relieving Baker for the final six defensive plays.

On the offensive side of the ball, seven different wide receivers saw action on offense, led by redshirt junior Terry McLaurin, who got into the game after an injury to Johnnie Dixon. True freshman Trevon Grimes also saw his first action as a Buckeye, getting in for 14 plays at wide out. Six other players saw the field for the first time at Ohio State Saturday, including freshman quarterback Dwayne Haskins, and a season-high 66 players got at least one snap.

Wrestling at Ohio State has become a family affair, as Rocky Jordan, the youngest brother of Buckeye wrestlers Bo and Micah Jordan, has committed to Ohio State. Rocky is ranked as the No. 12 recruit in the 170-pound weight class, and is No. 52 in the nation overall among high school seniors. He is already a two-time Ohio state champion as he enters his senior season.

Bo himself was a four-time champion at the state level in high school, amassing a 182-1 overall record before moving on to Ohio State. During his time in Columbus, Bo was a three-time All-American and one-time NCAA finalist in 2017. He was also part of Ohio State’s 2015 national championship team. Heading into his redshirt senior season, Bo is ranked second nationally in the 174-pound weight class.

Micah, meanwhile, was an All-American and Big Ten finalist last season. Entering his redshirt junior season, Micah is the No. 4 wrestler at the 149-pound weight class. Both brothers have also been named Academic All-Big Ten during their time at Ohio State.

The trio’s father, Jeff, was a wrestler at Wisconsin, and coached the boys at St. Paris Graham High School in Ohio. Their uncle, Jim, was a two-time national champion at Wisconsin, and their cousin, Isaac, was a two-time conference champion for the Badgers (Bo lost to Isaac in the Big Ten finals in 2015).

Two electrifying performances this season has Dobbins on the Heisman odds board.

With Week 3 of college football in the books, the sportsbooks have issued new odds going into the fourth week of the season. Bovada, one of the more popular online sportsbook, released their updated odds—and, again, the Ohio State Buckeyes lost ground.

Entering the Army West Point contest, Urban Meyer’s squad carried odds that hovered around 8/1. Even though the Buckeyes defeated the Black Knights convincingly, 38-7, the oddsmaker pushed OSU back slightly to 17/2 odds of winning the title.

Good news, though, for the Scarlet and Gray: freshman running back J.K. Dobbins has now shown up on the Heisman odds list for the first time this season. Dobbins has the 12th best odds right now, sitting as a 40/1 longshot.

While Dobbins continues to shine, the Buckeyes have some ground to make up against other college football powers. Leading the national championship odds table are the defending runner-ups, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Nick Saban’s crew holds 2/1 odds to win it all. Right behind the Tide is the team that defeated them in last season’s College Football Playoff National Championship, the Clemson Tigers.

After a blowout win against Louisville on the road, the Tigers saw one of the bigger leaps in the odds this week. Dabo Swinney’s program had 14/1 odds before playing the Cardinals; now, those odds are at 11/2.

Below is a table of the top 10 teams with the best odds. (Remember: odds are fluid, meaning, they can fluctuate at any given time. These odds were gathered at 2:50 p.m. ET on Sept. 18).

On the Heisman odds, Louisville’s quarterback Lamar Jackson no longer holds the top spot. That belongs to the Oklahoma Sooners’ QB Baker Mayfield. Mayfield currently holds 7/4 odds of taking home the Heisman Trophy.

J.T. Barrett, who began the season with odds around 10/1, now has slid all the way to 33/1. Before playing Army, Barrett had Heisman odds at 25/1. After running for a touchdown and throwing for two more against the Black Knights, the three-time OSU captain passed Drew Brees’ on the Big Ten conference list for most TDs responsible for.

Would you like to watch Ohio State at night again? Good news!

If you’re a fan of Ohio State and night games, well, my friend, we’ve got some good news for you.

Ohio State just announced that the Buck’s trip to Rutgers on September 30 will start at 7:30 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

Ohio State has already played two night games this season, winning at Indiana, and losing at home to Oklahoma. They aren’t currently scheduled to play in another one, but there’s plenty of time for that to change, as four of their conference games do not currently have a time set.

If you’re worried about what other game you may be missing while you’re watching Ohio State, that isn’t clear yet either, as most of Week 5’s TV schedule hasn’t been finalized. Right now, it’s just a bunch of Sun Belt and Conference USA games, and we’re assuming you won’t be too upset over not being able to watch Florida International that night.

Rutgers is currently 1-2, with losses to Washington and Eastern Michigan.

Another week, another conference honor for the true freshman who is already a favorite of Buckeye Nation.

Ohio State’s Week 3 win over Army wasn’t enough to keep the team from sliding in the polls, but it was enough to earn some conference recognition. Phenom J.K. Dobbins was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.

Dobbins finished Saturday with 172 yards and two touchdowns -- including an incredible drive that saw the Buckeye break away for 52-yards and a score.

It only took three games for Buckeye Nation to be won over by a true freshman running back, and with moves that could kill, Dobbins is on his way to a potentially historic career at Ohio State. The rusher made school history in his collegiate debut (with 181 yards on 29 carries), scored his first touchdown in Week 2, and continues to collect conference awards.

Dobbins will have a lot of competition for best running back in the conference -- even for best freshman running back over the next few months. Not only is he competing with junior stud Saquon Barley (of Penn State), but also with freshman Jonathan Taylor out of Wisconsin. Taylor rushed for 223 yards for the Badgers in his first career start last week and took home two Big Ten honors as a result.

We’re back again to get you caught up on the news, notes, and notable bits from Columbus and beyond.

Mmmmm. Smell that Buckeye fans?

That’s the smell of victory (I love a good cliché).

Ohio State got back on track against Army, coming away with a much-needed 38-7 victory. They’re now 2-1 on the season and while OSU still has major problems with their passing game, J.T. Barrett and Co. took a step in the right direction on Saturday.

The Buckeyes won’t face a good ranked opponent until Penn State comes to town at the end of October, so there’s plenty of time to build some chemistry and improve weaker areas.

Outside of Columbus, Nebraska and Illinois were the only Big Ten teams to lose over the weekend, Lamar Jackson might’ve killed his chances at another Heisman Trophy, and Texas v. USC had us thinking it was 2006 again.

I’m talking too much. Let’s just go ahead and get started.

Review: Army

Coming off a 31-16 drubbing by Oklahoma, OSU got it going again on home turf.

Like I said last week, the Black Knights indeed gave the boys in Scarlet and Gray a little scare heading into halftime only up 17-7. But the Buckeyes put their foot on the gas almost as soon as the third quarter began. OSU outscored Army 21-0 in the second half and soundly beat the Cadets 38-7.

J.T Barrett was as efficient as we’ve seen in recent memory, completing 25 of 33 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns, adding an extra 32 yards and another six points on the ground. He also finally broke Drew Brees’ career Big Ten touchdown mark with a nice throw to Austin Mack.

Here's the record breaker for J.T. Barrett number 107 of his career and the first of Austin Mack's. Congrats @JT_theQB4th #GoBucks #Buckeyes pic.twitter.com/HowshduILY

— Tino Bovenzi (@TinoBovenzi) September 16, 2017

The Buckeyes defense was sound and watched redshirt freshman Tuf Borland steal the show, after filling in for an injured Chris Worley at linebacker. Borland – the latest member of the family to play football at OSU – racked up 12 tackles and a tackle for loss in his collegiate debut. I’d expect to see more of him going forward.

A second freshman dazzled on Saturday. J.K. Dobbins proved to be the go-to running back for the Buckeyes, gashing the Black Knights for 172 and two touchdowns on just 13 carries.

The UNLV Rebels are next on the docket for OSU.

Play of the Game

It was only a matter of time before Dobbins busted one on Army.

With the Buckeyes leading 17-7 in the third quarter, Dobbins took the handoff from Barrett and sliced through the Black Knights defense on his way to a 52-yard touchdown run.

J.K. Dobbins on that drive: Two carries, 74 yards, one touchdown, MANY BROKEN ANKLES. pic.twitter.com/WU74F49r4c

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) September 16, 2017

That’s some serious finishing speed, folks.

Looking Ahead: UNLV Rebels

OSU gets their first cupcake opponent of the season in the UNLV Rebels (1-1).

The Rebels were the laughing stock of the nation Week One, losing as a 45-point favorite to Howard. They rebounded against Idaho, stunning the Vandals 44-16 on the road.

UNLV will be fresh off a Bye Week, but that won’t stop a rout from happening on Saturday in The Shoe.

State of the Big Ten

The Big Ten was thiiiiis close to pulling off a perfect Week Three.

A couple teams from Illinois ruined that dream, though, with Illinois dropping one to USF Friday night and Nebraska getting upset in Lincoln by Northern Illinois a day later.

Besides those two losses, the conference was flawless. Northwestern, Minnesota and Purdue all scored big wins. Michigan grounded Air Force, Wisconsin rocked BYU, and Iowa tuned-up North Texas.

Penn State and Rutgers each enjoyed shutout victories, as well.

Play of the Week

Okay, there are way too many choices from this wild weekend of college football.

And it truly was wild.

We begin with the ridiculousness that Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks uncorked to Tyrie Cleveland.

I already can’t wait for these two to meet again.

Heisman Watch

Last week, Lamar Jackson reigned supreme here.

After getting blasted by Clemson at home, it’s unlikely Jackson will ever get his hands on a second Heisman Trophy.

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield now takes center stage. He put on a show versus Tulane, tossing for 331 yards and four touchdowns. Mayfield has yet to throw an interception and has 10 touchdowns with more than 1,000 passing yards.

With the stats and a major win on the road in hand, Mayfield is firmly in the Heisman driver’s seat.

Keep your eye on Saquon Barkley, too. That man will stay in this conversation until the Nittany Lions lose.

Game of the Week: Penn State v. Iowa

We get a sneak peak of a potential conference title matchup when Penn State (3-0) heads west to square off with Iowa (3-0).

Led by Trace McSorley and the aforementioned Saquon Barkley, the Nittany Lions sport the top backfield in the Big Ten, if not the entire country. They’ve steamrolled through to Week Four and haven’t looked back.

The Hawkeyes are talented. They are. Can they return to the conference championship? The short answer is yes. Iowa has playmakers on both sides of the ball and have a coach that knows a thing or two about winning games. Playing in the Big Ten West also helps.

This will be a huge test for Penn State and Iowa, as each fight to separate themselves from the rest of the B1G.

Monday Morning #HotTakez

  • Do you care that Mike Weber and Demario McCall have barely seen the field? Can’t say that I do. The problem with this offense has nothing to do with the Buckeyes’ running backs. Weber should come in handy in those gritty conference matchups, though.
  • Is pro football honestly that much worse right now than college football? Unless you’re a CFB homer, I don’t think so. The quarterback play isn’t noticeably better in college. There are good games and bad games at both levels. And maybe a handful of teams have a legitimate shot at making the CFB Playoff. As for the NFL? This is the most wide open the league has been in a while.
  • Urban Meyer can’t touch Nick Saban as a coach. Why? Saban doesn’t care about any decision he makes as long as it benefits Alabama in his mind. Just ask Cooper Bateman and Blake Barnett.
  • Watching a great defensive game is better than watching a great offensive game. Always.
  • I rewatched a little of Vacation (2015) the other day. It’s funnier than National Lampoon's Vacation. Don’t @me, bro.
Oh, the Interweb

Buckeyes Bits

Land-Grant Holy Land has you covered on everything that is OSU. Win or lose, we’ve got your back.

Final Thoughts

The Buckeyes looked good against Army and play UNLV, Rutgers, Maryland, and Nebraska before facing Penn State on October 28.

In other words, they have time.

Time to get better. Time to figure out what’s working and what’s not. Time to build confidence.

That time is key if any fan wants to see this team actually improve.

So chill out with these random takes and crazy long articles on what’s up with J.T. Barrett and OSU. Let Urbz and his coaching staff work it out as they sprint through the easy part of their schedule because it’s nearly impossible to know what’s exactly wrong at this point.

A cakewalk awaits the Buckeyes for the next month or so.

Enjoy it.

The Buckeyes played host to some of the top sophomore prospects in the country on Saturday.

Unlike for the matchup with Oklahoma, Urban Meyer and crew might not have had a long list of prospects on campus for their game against Army, but Ohio State still played host to some talented recruits on Saturday.

Taking in the Buckeyes' runaway victory over Army, class of 2020 wide receiver Michael Wyman had a visit he’ll remember for quite some time.

“It was a great experience,” Wyman, a four-star recruit from Dudley High School in Greensboro, NC told Land-Grant Holy Land soon after his visit to OSU.

“I met most of the staff, and I got to see how the players get prepared for the game...(I also got) lots of academic information on my intended major (math and science). The fans are supportive of the program. I appreciate how the staff makes you feel at home.”

Having a chance to watch K.J. Hill, Austin Mack, and others bounce back, Wyman walked away from Columbus very impressed with the Buckeyes not just off the field, but also on it.

“The receivers and corners stood out...(They had) great speed, route running, hand and eye coordination,” he said.

With an offer from the Tar Heels of North Carolina on the table, and interest coming in from programs across the country for the 6’5, 190-pounder, Wyman definitely wouldn’t take a scholarship from the Buckeyes lightly.

“I can't wait for my next level of success. I would be honored to receive an offer from Ohio State,” the standout WR said.

Considered one of the top sophomore prospects in the country, Wyman is currently pegged as the 20th wide receiver and 83rd overall recruit in the class of 2020, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

2020 DE recaps visit

Wyman wasn’t the only highly-sought-after 2020 prospect to invade Columbus. Also making it to the Ohio State campus for the game were four-star defensive end Chantz Williams, and his Orange Park Oakleaf (FL) teammate, four-star offensive tackle Jalen Rivers.

Visiting the likes of Florida State and Miami in the past, the 6’4, 212-pound Williams left the OSU campus with a new respect for the program as a whole.

“I thought the visit really stood out from the rest of the visits I've been on. I really thought the campus was beautiful. (Some of the) things I got to see were the dorms and locker rooms and where some classes were,” said Williams.

“I got to speak with coach Alford, the running backs coach; and coach Johnson, the defensive line coach. They told me that they want to get to know me better and that they're going to stay in contact with me,” he added regarding his time with the OSU coaching staff.

Yet to pick up an offer from the Buckeyes, Williams has locked in scholarships from nearly a dozen college programs. Still more than two years away from signing with a college, Alabama, Florida State, Florida, Miami, Georgia, and Louisville are just some of the schools trying to add the pass rushing threat to their roster at the moment.

The sixth weak-side defensive end and 63rd-overall prospect in his class, Williams has backed up his off-field accolades while on it. Through three games this season, the sophomore has accounted for 12 tackles and two sacks, after locking in 30 total tackles and four sacks as a freshman at Oakleaf.

NFL rookies out of Ohio State continue to impress in Week 2

It was a big week for Buckeyes in the NFL, including Gareon Conley’s debut and Malik Hooker’s first career interception.

There were a lot less injuries in Week 2 for former Ohio State players, with one Buckeye rookie finally making his NFL debut, another rookie making his first catch and yet another snagging his first interception. The first-year players are living up to the hype, despite setbacks for many of them ahead of the regular season.

Watching the NFL was a bit more enjoyable this week following an Ohio State win over Army on Saturday, and the Buckeye did their part to represent the university at the next level.

Gareon Conley makes his rookie debut

After missing most of training camp and preseason —not to mention Week 1 of the regular season — with a pretty nasty shin injury, the Buckeye finally saw the field for the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The rookie cornerback proved his value early on, adding to an already much-improved Raiders team from yesteryear. On Conley’s first snap in the NFL, he had a pass breakup that almost resulted in a turnover.

Concerns in Carolina

Rookie receiver Curtis Samuel was expected to be a big factor in the Cam Newton-led Panthers offense this season. Few expected Carolina to struggle heading into the season with so many young playmakers added to the roster. Despite seeing the field in Week 1, Samuel didn’t get any touches until this week, snagging two catches for 7 yards — one for eight, and one for a loss.

Hyde has a 100-yard day

The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of issues, but their three-down back Carlos Hyde isn’t one of them. The powerhouse running back snagged his first 100-plus yard game of the 2017 season on Sunday, finishing the day with 124 rushing yards on 15 carries, along with 19 receiving yards. He hasn’t gotten into the endzone yet this year, but it’s just a matter of time — to be fair no one on Niners has seen the endzone yet this season, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Saints (and 4 Buckeyes) fall to the Patriots

It was going to be a long day for former Ohio State studs Vonn Bell and rookie Marshon Lattimore, who were tasked with secondary duty against Tom Brady in Week 2. Bell was fine with five total tackles (three solo), but Lattimore looked good, claiming seven total tackles (six solo) and two pass breakups.

Bell and Lattimore collided early in the fourth quarter sidelining both of them (seriously), but the rookie was sent back to the locker room and finished the game in concussion protocol. Two Buckeyes running into each other would be one of the more stupid reasons one of them was forced to miss a game — hopefully Lattimore is back and healthy quickly, the Saints could clearly use his help.

On offense, wideout Michael Thomas and veteran Ted Ginn Jr. did their best to contribute, but fell short against New England’s defense. Thomas continued building on his record-setting rookie season with five receptions for 89 yards Sunday, averaging 17.8 yards a catch. Ginn on the other hand had three receptions for 24 yards, and has yet to get into the endzone for New Orleans.

‘Monday Night Football’ matchup

The Detroit Lions are heading to New Jersey to face the New York Giants for some Monday night action. The Lions are still forced to wait idly by while Taylor Decker recovers from surgery on IR, but the Giants will see CB Eli Apple back in the starting lineup. Apple struggled with some injuries throughout training camp and the preseason, but was back in Week 1 with seven total tackles and one pass defended.

Plays of the Week

Malik Hooker’s first NFL career INT

The rookie set Buckeye standards sky-high as a turnover-magnet, and he isn’t disappointing his new fans in the NFL. The Colts gave Hooker his first career start in Week 2, and he followed it up by proving his worth -- with only one year of college experience — for his high draft pick. Hooker made his first NFL career interception and ran it back for 32 yards.

John Simon continues to represent #LBU

The Buckeye linebacker just keeps getting better, and continues to build off of an impressive preseason for the Colts. Signed during free agency, Simon has already been one of the most impactful players acquired this offseason. He kept the Cardinals at bay Sunday, snagging three total tackles and a big sack on Carson Palmer.

Injury Report

  • Nate Ebner (shoulder) was inactive again for Week 2, having yet to make his 2017 debut for the Patriots.
