First Half

Maryland won the toss at the beginning of the game and they deferred to give the Buckeyes the opening possession of the game. J.T. Barrett took the Buckeyes 70 yards on just 9 plays on 4 for 5 attempts before running it in from the 2-yard line to put the Buckeyes up 7-0.

On the first Maryland possession, it only lasted 3 plays and 1:31 minutes long. The Buckeye defense pressured Bortenschlager and Nick Bosa blew by the Terps linemen for a strip sack that led to the Buckeyes first defensive touchdown of the season courtesy of Jerome Baker.

The Special Teams play, Urban Meyer’s baby constantly hurts the Buckeyes. Ty Johnson swung the momentum in their favor as he took it to the house from 100 yards out to cut the Buckeye lead in half.

Barrett gets the Buckeyes back on track as he completes a swing pass to Mike Weber that ended at the Maryland 12-yard line before hitting Binjimen Victor on a skinny post in traffic for another touchdown, but unfortunately, due to a fumbled snap on the extra point attempt, the Buckeyes couldn’t extend the lead much more. The Buckeyes still lead 20-7.

Ohio State was the victim of the much-hated targeting penalty that earned Denzel Ward a trip to the Buckeyes locker room. Appearing much worse than it was, Ward appeared to be well within the target zone, but to no avail. A missed opportunity and a bad call that cost the Buckeyes another turnover and a starter on defense, but they have more talent waiting in the wings for their opportunity to show their worth.

Another starter, this time starting RG Brandon Bowen suffered a lower leg injury during an offensive play, which seemed to kill the momentum and the rhythm. It had ill effects on the Buckeyes as it resulted in another Special Teams gaffe as Munford and Pridgeon let a defender through for the block.

Once again, the Buckeyes stand up and defend their home turf as they turn away the Maryland offense once again, this time it was on a 4th and 5 attempt. On the next Buckeye possession, J.K. Dobbins uncharacteristically coughed the ball up as Chandler Burkett rocked him on his rushing attempt. Like clockwork, Ohio States defense does their job once again to force another punt.

The momentum not in the Buckeyes favor as they are forced to punt for the first time, but Chrisman shanked it inside of their 50 yard line to give Maryland possession in Buckeye territory, but Big Play Baker showed up to the party and sacked Bortenschlager on 4th down to stop the Terps offense

J.T. Barrett drove the ball down the field with his stable of running backs before finding Marcus Baugh tip-toeing on the sideline for a 10-yard touchdown to put the Buckeyes up 27-7.

The Buckeyes with some trickery after forcing another Maryland punt as they hand the ball off to Dobbins before he did the same for Campbell as he took it for 24-yards on the reverse to extend the Buckeye lead to 34-7., for a 24 rushing score to extend the Buckeyes lead to 34-7.

The Buckeye defense stiffened up and gave Barrett the ball on the 50-yard line. Hill actually returned it for a touchdown but a block in the back by Riep cost them. Barrett drove 50 yards to add another score when he found Austin Mack with 10 seconds left to extend the halftime lead to 41-7.

The defense has been the star of the game so far and going into halftime, the smothering defense held the Terps to 26 total yards, which is so far, a good sign for this team looking ahead.

Second Half

The second half picked up where the first left off as Ohio State started with a kickoff out of bounds, another Special Teams penalty. In obvious distress over the error, Urban looks to the ground in disbelief. Tyquan Lewis shuts down Bortenschlager as he sacks him on 3rd and long, which is their fourth sack of the day.

Barrett takes the opening second-half possession and takes the first play 35 yards to the Maryland 22 yard line, but Nuerenberger missed the easy field goal for another miss on Special Teams.

The Maryland offense couldn’t muster up any points as they forfeit the ball on another punt. Barrett and Weber punished the Terps on an 11 play drive that went for 65 yards before Weber punched in his fourth touchdown of the season.11 plays 65 yard drive that resulted in another Buckeye touchdown.

Maryland seemed to be clicking but Chase Young got the strip sack on Bortenschalger, then Cornell recovered the ball. Dobbins took the first touch for 14-yards to the Maryland 13 before juking a Terp before punching it in for more Buckeye points–Buckeyes lead 55-7.

Another Buckeyes was ejected by another targeting penalty, so next week at Nebraska Damon Arnette will be out for the first half of the game.

Maryland back-up running back Leake punched it in on 4th and short to cut into the insurmountable lead, but the Buckeyes still lead 62-14. The game ends with the same result, but there are still a few improvements that need to be made.

Next week they visit Nebraska which will be another opportunity to show how much they have grown. With Arnette being unavailable in the first half, the players after him need to be ready, and Special Teams needs to be on point. Enjoy the win, Go Bucks!

OSU’s offense and defense were near perfect. Special teams? Not so much.

The No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0) wrapped up the first half of their 2017 season with a dominating 62-14 victory in The Horseshoe over the Maryland Terrapins (3-2, 1-1) on a celebratory Homecoming Weekend. Two of the three OSU units were near perfect, while the third will likely draw the ire of head coach Urban Meyer throughout the upcoming week.

In Meyer’s 200th game as a collegiate head coach, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett put on a clinic, and should have finally quieted the doubters as he showed impressive arm strength, touch, patience and anticipation, as the Buckeyes’ first team defense held the Terps to 26 total yards in the first half. Unfortunately, OSU’s special teams had what might have been their worst day in the Meyer era.

On the day, OSU out-gained Maryland by 518 yards (584 to 66), and held the Terp passing game to just 16 yards. The Silver Bullets also recorded 12 tackles for loss and five sacks, including a pair of strip-sacks.

The first drive was an example of Buckeye dominance as Barrett led the offense 70 yards down the field in nine plays. The QB kept the ball on a designed run from the two to get the Buckeyes on the board, 7-0.

Other than the touchdown run, the highlight of the opening drive was a laser of a throw from Barrett to wide receiver Johnnie Dixon. As the QB released the ball, it looked like the pass was destined to be a pick-six for Maryland’s safety, but the ball came out hotter than anticipated and snuck past the crossing DB and into Dixon’s waiting hands, and the speedy junior turned upfield to pick up 35 and get OSU inside Maryland’s 10-yard line.

The pass was an early example of the fact that the tentative Barrett that Buckeye fans have begrudgingly gotten used to over the last two seasons might finally have been coached out of him.

On Maryland’s very first play from scrimmage, linebacker Dante Booker got the day’s first sack as Maryland attempted a flea-flicker. However, the coverage downfield and the immediate pressure barely gave Terp quarterback Max Bortenschlager enough time to get the ball back.

Two plays later, defensive end Nick Bosa came around the outside, practically untouched, and picked up the strip-sack on Bortenschlager. As the ball trickled towards the sideline, linebacker Jerome Baker scooped it up and raced into the endzone to put the Buckeyes up 14-0.

In recent weeks, Meyer has been praising his team’s kickoff coverage, however, early in the game, the Terps were able to take advantage of miscues. On the first Ohio State kickoff, Maryland advanced the ball to OSU’s 35, before the Baker scoop-and-score. On the subsequent kick, Maryland running back Ty Johnson caught the ball at the goal line in the middle of the field, and out-raced the Buckeye coverage unit to the left side of the field and scampered all 100 yards into the endzone to move the score to 14-7.

On the Buckeyes’ second offensive possession, Mike Weber was in at running back, and on his second play, Barrett hit the sophomore on a wheel route to the right for a 53-yard gain. Three plays later, Barrett again rifled the ball to a wide receiver who made a great play on the ball.

With a defender draped on him, Binjimen Victor got his feet down in the back of the endzone to put the Buckeyes up 20-7. However on the point after attempt, the snap was mishandled, and OSU’s special teams problems continued.

On the next drive, Bortenschlager attempted a pass to Taivon Jacobs. It appeared that he had caught the ball and turned upfield only to be met by Ohio State’s best cornerback, Denzel Ward. Despite the fact that replay seemed to show Ward hitting Jacobs in the chest with his shoulder, and there helmets touching after the fact, the future first-rounder was ejected for targeting. The disqualification opened up more playing time for sophomore Kendall Sheffield and true-freshman Jeffrey Okudah.

Following a Maryland punt, the Buckeyes were driving, but offensive guard Brandon Bowen was injured and had to be carted off of the field. Bowen was taken to OSU Medical Center where it was determined that he had fractures in both his left tibia and fibula.

The drive ended with a 47-yard field goal attempt, but freshman Thayer Munford was beat on the inside as Maryland’s Chandler Burkett blocked the kick to keep the Buckeye lead at 13. Nearly all of the Terps’ big plays in the first quarter came courtesy of OSU special teams mishaps.

That was exemplified by the fact that the Buckeyes led 187 to 1 in the yardage department following the game’s first 15 minutes. Barrett finished the quarter 10-12 passing for 162 yards, with a score in the air and on the ground. Despite the consensus that OSU is a running team with a stable of two top backs, the running game has been neutralized in recent weeks. That’s seemed to be due to offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson’s insistence on getting the passing game up to snuff, and opposing defenses selling out to stop the run. That has allowed Barrett the mojo he has been missing since his first year as a starter.

On their first possession of the second quarter, running back J.K. Dobbins appeared to be juking his way to another first down, only to have the ball knocked free as he attempted to cut to the inside. The turnover put the Terps in possession at their own 48-yard line. Despite the good field position, the Buckeye defense was able to force a punt.

The following drive featured a Barrett double-pump on a screen pass that ended up in a loss, two overthrows of wide open WRs, and a Weber loss of six. However, perhaps the worst play of the drive was the 21-yard punt from Drue Chrisman that set the Terps up with possession at the 36, and continued to add special teams frustration in what otherwise was a completely dominant performance by the Buckeyes.

For the second time in the game, Maryland went for it on fourth down in Ohio State territory. The first time was unsuccessful, and on the second attempt, Baker came around the edge untouched to get a sack and forced a fumble that was recovered by Bortenschlager.

On the next offensive drive, the Buckeyes turned to Dobbins to move the ball down the field. With the pace cranked up to 11, the freshman running back picked up 40 yards on the drive before Barrett found tight end Marcus Baugh for a 10-yard touchdown reception that included a hurdle over a Terp defender.

With 4:38 left in the first half, Bortenschlager completed his first pass of the game to set up a third and 1, on which Sam Hubbard shed his blocker to tackle Johnson for a seven-yard loss and force a punt.

After the Buckeyes moved the ball from mid-field to just outside the redzone on the next drive, Barrett pitched the ball to Dobbins moving to the left, who subsequently tossed it to H-back Parris Campbell, who followed a seal block by Barrett and showed his elite-level speed racing into the endzone to increase OSU’s lead to 34-7.

Towards the end of the first half, Amir Riep was flagged for an unnecessary block in the back that brought back a K.J. Hill return that would have set the Buckeyes up in the Maryland redzone. With 15 seconds left in the half, and the Buckeyes on five, Barrett threw a strike to Austin Mack in the front corner of the endzone to end the first half with the Buckeyes up 41-7.

In the first 30 minutes, Barrett went 17-25 for 252 yards and three passing TDs, plus his rushing score. He completed passes to seven receivers, and the Buckeyes dominated total yardage 361-26. Dobbins finished the first half with 68 yards on 10 carries. The first half performance was even more impressive when combined with last year’s Maryland game.

Following back-to-back losses on the first drive after halftime, Tyquan Lewis broke through the Maryland O-line untouched to record OSU’s fourth sack of the game and force yet another punt.

On the next drive, Barrett broke free from a defender in the backfield and raced up the field for a 35-yard gain, his biggest pickup on the ground on the day. Despite getting into the redzone, Sean Nuernberger missed a 29-yard field goal attempt to add to the day’s special teams problems. He was also flagged for a kickoff out-of-bounds in the game.

Later in the third quarter, Weber picked up 35 yards on a drive that was capped with the running back picking up his first TD of the game, extending the lead to 48-7, and wrapping up the first team’s afternoon.

With the second-string defense on the field, true-freshman linebacker Baron Browning dropped back into a spy position on Bortenschlager, and then rushed into the backfield to force the second strip-sack of the game. Sophomore defensive tackle Jashon Cornell recovered the fumble for the Buckeyes.

With backup quarterback Dwayne Haskins operating with a short field, Dobbins turned what could have been a tackle for loss into his first touchdown of the game, and OSU took a 55-7 lead with 2:08 left in the third quarter.

On the subsequent drive, Bortenschlager rushed on third down and slide short of the first down marker, but DB Damon Arnette hit him in the head, and after review the Buckeye was charged with targeting and ejected. On the game he had a pair of pass breakups and a tackle, but will have to miss the first half against Nebraska next week. Bortenschlager had to be attended to on the field, and did not return to the game.

In the fourth quarter, Antonio Williams became the fifth Buckeye to record a rushing touchdown, as he took the ball to paydirt from the 8-yard line, moving the OSU lead to 62-7.

The Maryland offense finally got on the board following a botched option read between Haskins and Williams resulted in a turnover. Terp running back Javon Leake took a handoff from the 20 and cut through the OSU defense to move the score to 62-14.

Ohio State will be back on the gridiron next Saturday in Lincoln, Neb. as the Buckeyes take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 7:30 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

The Buckeye right guard is set to undergo surgery.

After sustaining an apparent leg injury in the first half against the Maryland Terrapins, it’s now been announced that right guard Branden Bowen has a fractured fibula and tibia, per his mother on Twitter.

So hard as a mom to be across the country with my son hurt! He will have surgery to fix the tibia and fibula fractures. ❤️❤️@BrandenBowen

— Natalie Bowen (@NatalieOSUmom) October 7, 2017

As mentioned in the tweet, Bowen will have surgery to fix the fractures. While recovery time for a fractured fibula/tibia can vary, it seems that Bowen’s season is more than likely finished.

A third-year member of the team with sophomore eligibility, Bowen has started in every game this season for the Ohio State Buckeyes. His first career start was in the season opener against the Indiana Hoosiers—a game where he helped pave the way for 292 rushing yards.

We wish Bowen the best, and hope for a speedy recovery.

Mason Jobst is good, folks

Going on the road to beat a ranked conference rival is a pretty swell start to the season, no? I’d certainly think so as the No. 19 Ohio State mens hockey team went into Madison on opening night and took down No. 12 Wisconsin. It wasn’t the 2014 Big Ten Title game of massacres over the Badgers or anything, just a close win and the perfect start to the season for OSU.

A team breaking in a goalie with little experience — and having freshmen at the bottom of the lineup playing — probably didn’t particularly enjoy playing at a conference rival on opening night; but hey, if it works out? This must be the Big Ten’s new scheduling strategy for some reason, similar to how the football team played at Indiana to start.

Either way, Sean Romeo was solid if unspectacular in goal as he saved 18/20 shots for a .900 save percentage. If he can give you that, OSU is going to win on most nights against most teams.

The most encouraging part to me, the hockey nerd, is that OSU only allowed 20 shots on goal versus the No. 12 team in the nation on the road. Ohio State was outshot on aggregate last season and had some problems with a lack of shot suppression. If they have either altered the strategies or brought in enough new talent to more effectively suppress shot attempts against them, this team could be in for a bigger year than expected.

It was a relatively low event game in total, as OSU only had 24 shots on goal on Wisconsin goalie Kyle Hayton. But just outshooting a ranked opponent on the road, even with the team trailing two different times (for less than 15 game minutes total, it should be said), is something to take from the game on top of the win.

The game didn’t start out as positively for Ohio State, as they held Wisconsin to only four shots on goal in the first period and yet couldn’t capitalize on any of their eight. The Bucks had two powerplays but couldn’t generate a single shot on goal in the frame.

In the second, Trent Frederick scored UW’s first goal of the year, at 7:38, to put Wisconsin up 1-0, but that lead would only last for less than seven minutes.

OSU captain, and best player, 23-year-old college junior Mason Jobst scored his first of the year as he fought through the UW defense and scored on his backhand from his knees to tie the game at one apiece. Freddy Gerard had the lone assist.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) October 7, 2017

Just beautiful.

In the third, Ohio State would fall behind after causing a penalty shot for Tarek Baker, who converted his chance.

But that’d be the last goal Romeo gave up and Ohio State would find a way.

At 15:00 exactly of the third period, Sam McCormick channeled his brother Max and found John Wiitala in front to knot the game at two apiece. Wiitala was streaking toward the net as he found his way behind the defense and deked Hayton out of his skates once McCormick somehow slithered a pass through the defense.

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) October 7, 2017

The game sure seemed like it was heading for overtime.

Mason Jobst disagreed.

After his highlight reel goal to tie the game at one in the second, he wanted another, less flashy goal to earn OSU at least a split in the series.

Jobst left the puck for Gerard at the top of the zone and Freddy went down into the right faceoff circle and hit Mason in front, as he put it past Hayton to give Ohio State the 3-2 lead that would eventually be the final score.

Gamewinner!

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) October 7, 2017

Wisconsin would be held to eight shots total in that third period and couldn’t get another one by Romeo.

On a night where the Blue Jackets shut out the Islanders in their season opener and the Indians were allowed a win by Joe Girardi’s managerial incompetence (I’m posting through it as a Yankees fan, don’t worry about me. Never stop posting), OSU hockey did their part to stand out on the Columbus sports scene with a win at No. 12 Wisconsin.

The two teams will faceoff yet again on Saturday in Madison at 6pm ET. Go Bucks.

The Buckeyes look to bring home a huge win for Homecoming.

The Ohio State Buckeyes put together a solid performance on both sides of the ball against Rutgers last week to silence many of their naysayers. Now, the Buckeyes come back home to face the Maryland Terrapins. While Ohio State is a 31-point favorite over Maryland, don’t discount the visitors so readily. The Terps traveled to Texas Week 1 as 19-point underdogs, and managed to pull out a 10-point victory.

The offense looks to be running on all cylinders now, with sophomore running back Mike Weber back in the lineup as a compliment to freshman J.K. Dobbins. J.T. Barrett has found his rhythm in the pocket, and his receivers have finally seemed to sync with him. The defense remains relentless, pitching a shutout last week against the Scarlet Knights. With a strong defensive line, opposing offenses have little hope of rushing effectively or consistently.

The Buckeyes are 3-0 all-time against these newcomers to the Big Ten, and last year laid a 62-3 beatdown against D.J. Durkin--a former assistant under Urban Meyer--and company in College Park. This weekend is homecoming for Ohio State, and the Buckeyes don’t look like they’re going to let off the gas anytime soon.

When is the game and how can I watch?

Game Date/Time: Saturday, Oct. 7, 4 p.m.

Where is GameDay today?

The crew is headed to Fort Worth ahead of No. 8 TCU’s matchup with No. 23 West Virginia. TCU got the college football world’s attention when the Horned Frogs traveled to Stillwater and delivered a beatdown to then-No. 6 Oklahoma State two weeks ago. Now, TCU gets the Mountaineers at home in the only matchup of ranked teams on the day. It’s the first Big 12 matchup featured on GameDay this season, and the show’s first visit to TCU since 2009.

What’s the rest of the Big Ten up to this weekend?

In a pair of noon games, No. 4 Penn State travels to Northwestern on ABC, while Iowa gets Illinois in Kinnick on BTN. At 3:30 p.m., Purdue faces Minnesota in West Lafayette (ESPN2) and, in a late-season out-of-conference matchup, Indiana plays Charleston Southern (BTN). Michigan State heads to Ann Arbor to face No. 7 Michigan in a primetime, nationally televised matchup at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. Finally, No. 9 Wisconsin travels to Nebraska at 8 p.m. on BTN to close out the day’s slate.

Game day is almost upon us, and in this weeks game, Ohio State will host a scrappy Maryland Terrapins team. They shocked the world as they went into Austin and defeated the host team, they blew out an overmatched Towson team and they held on to beat Minnesota, again as the visiting team. Two impressive road wins, and now they find themselves in the same situation as they will once again be the visiting team.

What To Watch For:

Third Stringer Magic?

Max Bortenschlager is Maryland’s current starting quarterback after the previous two starters both suffered season-ending injuries to put him in this very position. He will make his second start, but this time he will start in the Shoe, one of the most electric and loud environments. He will try to shake the nerves as he enters his first true road game environment.

So far this year Bortenschlager has been decent so far for the Terrapins, throwing for 290 yards, 3 touchdowns against 2 interceptions and rushing for 34 yards and 2 more scores on the ground.

Bortenschlager will have to be on top of his game against Ohio State, he will need to take care of the football and he will have to lead his team without any mistakes or else the Ohio State defense will make them pay dearly.

The Return of Big Play Barrett?

J.T. Barrett, courtesy of Bucknuts, is irritated with the constant criticism that has plagued him this season, the deep ball struggles. Ever since the dreadful Oklahoma game, Barrett has been the ire of a lot of criticism from everyone from former Buckeyes, fans and even by top-tier high school recruits and targets.

Barrett actually did pretty well against a depleted Rutgers secondary that was missing its best cornerback, but that is not an excuse because the next two up had enough experience and were upperclassmen to the program. Barrett was 4 for 4 on deep passing attempts, even though one was called back due to an offensive pass interference call against Dixon, but none the less, he showed improvement.

The Rutgers game was mostly a tuneup game, but it contained a well-deserved opportunity to rebound and to regain confidence, and they achieved that after putting 56 on the board. Not only has Barrett gained confidence, his receivers are starting to break open, and the progress is there, the execution is not there, but they are close. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Buckeyes put up big numbers in this game.

D.J. Moore/Ty Johnson versus the Back Seven:

DJ Moore will be another test for Arnette and Sheffield because he hasn’t been stopped yet this season. He has found the end zone in all four games, he has had at least 8 catches averaging a shade over 100 yards per game, and he has 5 touchdowns so far this season.

He will be accompanied by Ty Johnson, who also has the ability that Moore has, with his ability to score and give defense fits. In three of the four games, he was well over 120 yards, and the only team to shut him off was UCF, as they held him scoreless and to only 25 yards. The Linebackers and the Defensive Backs will have their hands full this game, but they will lean on their Rushmen package to confuse Bortenschlager and force turnovers. Will they be up to the challenge?

Prediction: This game is another home game before traveling on the road to visit the Cornhuskers. This is a trap game that will have that slow burn effect before the Buckeyes impose their will and their talent will be the difference. Maryland is an upcoming team that will keep it close. D.J. Moore scores during the game, but Johnson gets shut down as Baker leads the second half defensive charge. It will be a sack party, with at least 3 and 2 huge turnovers to salt the game away (1 pick/fumble). J.T. will have a huge day and Haskins makes an appearance to remind them of what they lost out on.

Here’s the full slate of college football games this weekend.

The Ohio State Buckeyes don’t kickoff until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, but there are a few key conference matchups throughout the day to keep you busy before, and after, the Scarlet and Gray take the field.

There’s only one ranked vs. ranked matchup on Saturday, West Virginia (No. 23) at TCU (No. 8), but there are some Big Ten competitions that could have bowl season implications.

  • Penn State (No. 4) kicks off at noon against Northwestern and shouldn’t have any trouble keeping their top spot in the conference.
  • Michigan (No. 7) plays host to “little brother” Michigan State for a night game that could drive a stake in the Wolverines momentum.
  • The only other Big Ten team ranked higher than the Buckeyes is Wisconsin (No. 9) who faces an unranked Nebraska on Saturday night.

Here’s the full slate of college football games in Week 6:

LGHL Denzel Ward is the clear No. 1 corner for Ohio State

Will the Buckeyes have another CB drafted to the NFL in Round 1? Probably.

“Much can be said about Ward’s coverage skills as he has slid into the starting role in Columbus this season, but his run stopping skills have also been a bright spot for the Buckeyes defense.”

-Cam Mellor, ProFootball Focus

With Ohio State pumping out first-round NFL talent at the CB position year-after-year, you’d figure that they’d have to run out of it at some point, right? Wrong. The Buckeyes have a seemingly endless amount of starting corners waiting in the wings, even if they got off to a little bit of a slow start this season.

According to PFF, Denzel Ward has a 4.9 run stop percentage and has made five stops in run defense so far in 2017. These stats are enough for him to tie for ninth among all Power-5 CBs (PFF defines a ‘stop’ as a ‘win’ for the defense).

The Buckeye’s nine passes defended ranks him No. 1 in all of college football through Week 5. Ward is also just one solo tackle away from tying his career-high (12) from 2016. He’s also claimed 2.0 tackles for loss and one interception thus far this season.

The position group as a whole for the Buckeyes has been a little inferior to last year’s, but as Ward gains more confidence as the team’s No. 1 corner, he should finish the 2017 season with career-high stats across the board — and probably snag himself a top ranking among NFL prospects, too.

“According to a team spokesman, former Ohio State quarterback Torrance Gibson ‘is no longer on the team.’ The quarterback is still enrolled in classes, however, he said.”

-Patrick Ochs, Sun Herald

Less then a year after former QB turned receiver Torrance Gibson left the Ohio State program, amidst rumors that he’d be following Luke Fickell to Cincinnati, he enrolled at the JUCO level instead, at Gulf Coast. Gibson’s original plan was to play for the Bulldogs for one season and then make the jump back into Division I ball.

Instead, it looks like Gibson won’t be finishing out the 2017 season in any capacity. In five games, the former Buckeye was having success both through the air (542 yards and four TDs) and on the ground (321 rushing yards and four TDs), so his departure was a bit of a surprise.

Gibson made his feelings known earlier this season about the Buckeyes switching him to receiver, and gave some insight into why it wasn’t successful.

“When I play receiver, it’s like I was just out there. I wasn’t enjoying the game. At quarterback, I enjoy the game and love the game. This is all I know and what I do.”

No more information has been released about why Gibson is no longer on the Gulf Coast team, but this might be his final chance to keep his dream of playing football — both in college and beyond -- alive.

“Special delivery for Urban Meyer: Your recruiting push into Tennessee is paying off.”

-Bill Landis, cleveland.com

Since Urban Meyer took over at Ohio State, the recruiting trail has been extended throughout SEC country and even into the great state of Texas. As Meyer and staff continued planting flags across states like Georgia and Virginia, they’ve also slowly started to create a pipeline from Tennessee.

Ohio State already has commitments from 4-star Max Wray (2018 OT) and his younger brother Jake (2020 OL), who is also a top prospect at his position, as well as RB Master Teague. The Buckeyes hosted three other 4-star players from the state at their annual Friday Night Lights camp in July: DEs Joseph Anderson and Ani Izuchukwu and WR Lance Wilhoite for the 2019 class.

The coaches weren’t willing to openly admit it in Landis’ piece, but part of Ohio State’s success down south can certainly be attributed to the University of Tennessee not exactly being a big draw to local recruits as of late (Helloooo Butch Jones). Regardless, the Buckeyes are finding success after casting a wider recruiting net thus far in the Meyer era.
