The Trojans and Fighting Irish battle in South Bend to stay in the College Football Playoff picture

Last week ATS: 5-6-1 (2-4 National, 3-2-1 B1G)

Season ATS: 52-44-2 (20-17 National, 32-27-2 B1G)

Last week could have been better, but it also could have been worse. After the first few games of the week I figured a terrible week was in order after losses from Washington State, Kansas State, Illinois, and a tie against the spread in the Michigan-Indiana game. Thankfully a stronger finish helped to keep MC&J from losing much of the early season progress.

National games:

No. 10 Oklahoma State (-7) v. Texas - 12:00 PM EST - ABC

Oklahoma State is hoping to continue working their way back into the College Football Playoff picture when they head to Austin for Saturday’s contest with the Longhorns. Last week the Cowboys put up 747 total yards of offense in a 59-16 win over Baylor. The offensive outburst moved Oklahoma State into the top spot offensively among FBS teams.

Heading into last week’s action the nation’s top offensive team was Oklahoma, who handed Texas a 29-24 win in the Red River Showdown. While the Longhorns have had success slowing opponents on the ground, they have had issues defending the pass. Sam Darnold threw for nearly 400 yards against Texas earlier in the year, while Baker Mayfield threw for 302 last week.

How much does Texas have in the tank for this game? Two weeks ago the Longhorns went to double overtime against Kansas State, and last week’s close loss in a rivalry game against the Sooners had to take a lot out of them. Mason Rudolph will put up big numbers as the Cowboys win their fifth straight in Austin.

Oklahoma State 38, Texas 28

Syracuse v. No. 8 Miami (FL) (-16) - 3:30 PM EST - ESPN

At some point Miami’s luck has to run out, right? RIGHT?? After scoring with six seconds to go two weeks ago to beat Florida State, last week the Hurricanes kicked a field goal with four seconds left to deny Georgia Tech’s upset attempt.

Malik Rosier looks like the real deal at quarterback for the Hurricanes, with the junior having thrown 12 touchdowns and only three interceptions through five games. Last week Travis Homer stepped in for an injured Mark Walton and rushed for 170 against the Yellow Jackets.

This isn’t the Syracuse team you have become accustomed to. Dino Babers has the Orange full of confidence right now. Junior quarterback Eric Dungey has lit up the stat sheet so far this year, accounting for 20 touchdowns.

For the way Syracuse is playing right now, I think Miami is laying too many points. Maybe the Hurricanes put everything together and blow the Orange out, but I don’t see that happening. The Orange played LSU and NC State tough on the road earlier this year. Dungey makes enough plays to keep this within double-digits.

Miami 34, Syracuse 27

No. 20 UCF (-7) v. Navy - 3:30 PM EST - CBS Sports Network

This very well could be the best game of the week that barely anybody will see. Central Florida is thriving under Scott Frost, who is in his second year as head coach. The Golden Knights have scored at least 38 points in every game this season, as they angle for the Group of Five spot in the New Year’s Six.

Five turnovers were too much for the Midshipmen to overcome last week, as Memphis was able to hand Navy their first loss of the season. Even with the loss, Navy is still averaging nearly 400 yards per game on the ground.

At least if Central Florida is going to slow down Navy’s option attack, they have Frost running scout team quarterback. Even with Frost’s expertise in game-planning on how to stop the option, Central Florida won’t win by more than a touchdown in Annapolis. The Midshipmen play a lot cleaner than they did a week ago, and give the Golden Knights their first true contest of the season.

UCF 31, Navy 27

No. 9 Oklahoma (-14) v. Kansas State - 4:00 PM EST - FOX

Last week I rode with Kansas State and it was a huge mistake. TCU came into “The Little Apple” and had little trouble with the Wildcats. Quarterback Jesse Ertz missed the game after getting injured the previous week against Texas, and backup Alex Delton found little success against the Horned Frogs.

Oklahoma was able to bounce back from a loss to Iowa State with a win last week in Dallas over Texas. Baker Mayfield remains one of the front runners for the Heisman Trophy, having thrown for 17 touchdowns and just one interception so far this year.

Kansas State is reeling right now, and I just have no confidence in the Wildcats in this spot. Ertz might be back, but even if he does play, he won’t be able to match with Mayfield. The Sooners have planted their flag in Manhattan since 2000, winning the last six times they’ve come to town; scoring at least 41 points in each of the last four contests against the Wildcats.

Oklahoma 44, Kansas State 21

No. 11 USC v. No. 13 Notre Dame (-4) - 7:30 PM EST - NBC

The USC-Notre Dame rivalry could actually be fun again. This year marks the first time since 2009 that both teams are ranked heading into the Battle for the Jeweled Shillelagh. Saturday night’s matchup in South Bend has plenty at stake, with the loser surely being out of the College Football Playoff picture.

Last week needed second half heroics from Sam Darnold and Ronald Jones II to erase a 21-7 halftime deficit to Utah. More often than not this year, USC hasn’t played all that well. If the Trojans are able to get by Notre Dame on Saturday night, they’ll have four very winnable games to close out the year, followed by the Pac-12 title game to state their case for the CFP.

After finishing the 2016 season with a 4-8 record, Notre Dame has put all the jokes to bed in 2017. Aside from the Georgia game (which they lost by a point), Notre Dame has had little trouble in their other five games. The Fighting Irish are fifth in the country at running the football, averaging over 300 yards per game on the ground. Junior running back Josh Adams is averaging nine yards per carry so far this year.

The Trojans have a lot of injuries on defense right now, and that spells trouble against a Notre Dame offense that has been rolling so far this year. I’m also getting tired of siding with USC only to have them fail to cover. USC has bit me in the Texas, Washington State, and Utah games so far this year, so I’m spitefully taking the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame 33, USC 24

QB Rod Gerald (Official Thread)

CATCHING UP WITH ROD GERALD.

57da3206cf737.image%2B%25281%2529.jpg

Former Ohio State quarterback Rod Gerald recently sat down with esteemed 12th Warrior GoBucks2204 to discuss his legacy in Columbus and quest for redemption.

The Rod Gerald Story: Finding Redemption, Part 1
http://www.howfirmthyfriendship.com/2017/10/the-rod-gerald-story-finding-redemption.html

Gerald just underwent his third back surgery on Oct. 12th. If you enjoyed watching him play and are in the position to donate, you can help the old Buckeye with medical bills.
http://akickincrowd.com/projects/rod-gerald1

Entire article: https://www.elevenwarriors.com/skul...io-state-buckeyes-football-penn-state-big-nut

For those that don't remember Rod Gerald, he is mostly remembered for 2 things:

1. having a drug problem....Ohio State lost the 1978 Sugar Bowl 35-6 to Alabama since Gerald couldn't get his "cocaine fix" before the game

Former Ohio State quarterback Rod Gerald opened up to David Briggs of The Toledo Blade in an excellent story that starts with his worst nightmare from facing Alabama in the 1977 Sugar Bowl: running out of cocaine.

Struggling with a bum back and a small fracture in his leg, [former OSU quarterback Rod Gerald] remembers popping three pills of Tylenol with codeine that January night in 1978. But Gerald felt lost without the countering effects of cocaine. By then, he said he needed the stimulant to perform.

He snorted until his nose bled during a trip to Southern Methodist University, then kept the drug in his wristband during the Michigan game. The withdrawal was a nightmare.

“Going to New Orleans, I probably would have taken an eight ball,” Gerald said, using the street name for three and a half grams of cocaine. “I’d have to use it in practice, use it to go in the meetings, use it to go to functions, use it to go to dinner. From morning to night, I would have to use cocaine. Not having it, going down there without it, it was like ... I [remember] just being frightened, afraid that I had nothing.”

Ohio State got waxed in that game, 35-6, by the way.

2. The next season Gerald willingly switched positions from QB to WR so a freshman named Art Schlichter could start at QB

Big Ten basketball is moving to a 20 game conference schedule. Here’s what that means for Ohio State

It’s both good news and bad news

Big changes are coming to Ohio State’s basketball schedules.

The Big Ten announced today that starting next season, the league will move to a 20 game league schedule, instead of the 18 game slate league teams are currently playing. The conference will “protect” three rivalries, Michigan-Michigan State, Indiana-Purdue and Illinois-Northwestern, which will be played twice a season. Other teams will play seven teams twice and six teams once a season.

The league also said they would prioritize “regional” opponents in setting up future schedules. Over a six year period, a team can expect to play a “regional” opponent 10 times, as opposed to nine for any other opponent. What constitutes a “regional” opponent wasn’t specifically spelled out, but for Ohio State fans, I think we can assume that will at least include Michigan.

So, what does this mean for Ohio State? It’s good news and bad news, in my humble opinion.

What’s the good news?

  • This almost certainly will help future RPI and strength of schedule metrics. Over a six year period, those two extra Big Ten games will almost always be better opponents than who Ohio State might schedule out of conference, and the Buckeyes will get an extra opportunity to pick up a quality road win. Trading two low-major games for say, dates with Iowa and Illinois is a win for fans and metrics.
  • This makes Big Ten basketball schedules a little more fair. With such a huge league, an 18 game schedule led to some pretty significant variances in schedule difficulty. If you happened to get home and homes with Nebraska and Rutgers, and missed a road trip to a place like Madison, you’d be at a big advantage, standings-wise, over another potential opponent. A larger schedule levels out those imbalances a little bit.

What’s the bad news?

  • This probably makes it harder to schedule more difficult out of conference games. New Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann has not been shy about wanting to play an aggressive schedule, but he also told the Columbus Dispatch that hey, “You can’t play 30 high-major games...That’s not fair to your team.” Next season, Ohio State already has a date with Cincinnati, an ACC/Big Ten Challenge game, and probably a Gavvitt game against a Big East opponent. If you know you now have two more Big Ten caliber opponents, is there an incentive to go find another KenPom top-75 program? Maybe not. Think of this as trading some potentially interesting games in November for ones in January.
  • In the event that one or two Big Ten teams really suck, like Rutgers did in 2016 (KenPom ranking: 279), additional games run the risk of actually diluting Ohio State’s metrics. That horrible Rutgers team might have cost multiple Big Ten squads a seed line in the NCAA Tournament. It’s unlikely a Big Ten team gets that bad again, but hey, you never know.

Overall, it’s probably a good thing for Buckeye fans. The schedules are going to get better, NCAA Tournament resumes may improve, and you get two more games against teams you’re more likely to care about.

It’s not a sure thing, but hey, what is?

A top prospect will likely be on hand to watch the Buckeyes battle the Nittany Lions.

Dobbs back in Columbus soon

Next Saturday, Ohio State will walk into The ‘Shoe with a large contingent of Buckeye faithful hoping to see their team get revenge on Penn State. After last year’s deflating 24-21 loss against the Nittany Lions, this contest will be one to watch, with potential playoff implications on the line. That’s a big reason why many top recruits from all across the country will be roaming the sidelines to take in the action as well.

One of the big names that is now likely to be in Columbus for the highly anticipated Big Ten conference tilt is ‘19 OT Devontae Dobbs of Belleville (MI), according to 247Sports’ Bill Kurelic, who briefly spoke with Tigers head coach Jermain Crowell.

"We'll probably be at the Ohio State-Penn State game," Crowell told Kurelic.

If indeed this does happen to come to fruition, there is no underestimating how big of a deal it is for the Buckeyes and their chances with the star lineman. Dobbs, the eighth-best player in his class, has already been at Ohio State a handful of times, and obviously, the more times he is on campus, the more comfortable the 6'4, 270-pounder will be.

For now, the 247Sports Crystal Ball points towards the in-state Spartans as the favorite for the very best offensive tackle in the country and the very best player from the state of Michigan. But Ohio State should definitely not be counted out in this recruitment.

Also, as you can see in the link above, Crowell also revealed that Dobbs would be joined by a few teammates, if the visit does indeed happen. The biggest name of the bunch was ‘19 CB Julian Barnett, a four-star prospect and Top 75 prospect in his class. At this time, the Buckeyes have not yet offered Barnett, but I would imagine one coming eventually.

Miller previews upcoming visit

Another big-time visitor that is expected in the 614 next weekend comes in the form of ‘20 QB Jack Miller of Chaparral (AZ) — likely one of the best QBs that will be in his class.

Miller, a pro-style quarterback, has already landed an offer from Ohio State and that in it’s own right should show just how good the Scottsdale native is and can continue to be. However, if that isn’t enough, consider the other offers he holds under his belt: Arizona, Arizona State, Florida State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and UCLA. Yeah, not bad at all.

Miller, who stands at 6'4 and 210 pounds, was most recently in Columbus back in June. However, that stop at Ohio State was to participate in a summer camp that the Buckeyes held. This time, Miller will be able to take in a game day atmosphere in Ohio Stadium, and make no mistake, it will be an atmosphere for the ages and one that Miller is looking forward to taking in, as he stated to Rivals.com’s Adam Gorney in an interview on Wednesday.

"It’s very big and I’m looking at the atmosphere on game day and if I can see myself going to school there,” Miller told Gorney.

Taking a look at Miller’s 247Sports Crystal Ball shows that the Buckeyes are the lone program to garner a prediction for the highly-touted signal caller. With that being said, this will be marathon and not a race, as Miller has plenty of time to play the recruiting game and figure out what is best for himself.

247Sports' early ranking on the Arizona standout prospect has him as the 47th best player in his class for now. Furthermore, the well-respected recruiting service pencils him in as the very best pro-style passer in the country and the highest-ranked player from the Grand Canyon state.

Also, J.T. Barrett is charging up the Heisman odds table.

Week 7 of the college football season saw four upsets to teams in the AP Poll Top 10. Those upsets led to a shakeup in the gambling world, as Ohio State took Clemson’s spot as the team with the second best odds to win the College Football Playoff National Championship.

As of Wednesday evening, the Buckeyes’ odds are 5-to-1, an improvement from last week’s evaluation of 15-to-2. Clemson’s surprising loss to the Syracuse Orange in the Carrier Dome dropped their odds to only third; the Tigers now have 9-to-1 odds of winning it all.

Once again, though, the Alabama Crimson Tide are the favorite. After laying waste to the Arkansas Razorbacks in a 41-9 victory, the Tide improved their odds from 5-to-4 last week, to 10-to-11.

Of the upsets, Washington State had the biggest blow to their odds. On the same night that Clemson fell (Friday the 13th), the Cougars were overpowered by California, 37-3. The blowout dropped Wazzu from a 50-to-1 longshot, all the way to 300-to-1. Apple Cup rival Washington dropped to 40-to-1 odds, while Auburn dropped to 75-to-1.

Below are the ten teams with the best odds heading into Week 8.

In the Heisman odds, it’s another week with Saquon Barkley at the top. The Penn State Nittany Lions running back saw a drop in his odds this week, but he’s still the favorite at 7-to-5.

However, the top spot isn’t just for Barkley—he’s sharing it. Stanford running back Bryce Love, who had 4-to-1 odds last week, now has the same odds as Barkley.

Behind those two RBs are two quarterbacks: Baker Mayfield and...J.T. Barrett. Mayfield has 11-to-2 odds, while Barrett has charged up the odds table. After five dazzling performances since the Oklahoma loss, Barrett now has 9-to-1 odds to win the Heisman Trophy. Last week, his chances were posted at 28-to-1.

The QB has bounced back from calls for his job to being one of the best in the country.

“You may have been sleeping on Ohio State since the Buckeyes lost to Oklahoma, and if you have, you've missed some epic Barrett performances.”

-Brady Quinn, CBS Sports

After weeks of calling for Dwayne Haskins to take over under center, Buckeye fans are slowly getting accustomed to the fact that fifth-year senior signal-caller J.T. Barrett might have finally completed his complete revolution back to the confident, consistent passer that he was before breaking his ankle against Michigan in 2014.

As the Dublin-native Quinn mentions in his breakdown, in the five games since the 31-16 loss to Oklahoma, Barrett has thrown for 1,351 yards and 18 touchdowns, bringing his season total to 21 passing scores to just one interception.

Now, we understand that the last five games have not exactly been against the stiffest of competition, and that Barrett struggled mightily against the Sooners, however, it is clear that his progress has been more than just playing against porous defenses.

Against Nebraska, Barrett was insanely consistent. He went 27-of-33 for 325 yards and five passing touchdowns, and did so by sitting in the pocket and waiting for routes to develop, throwing into tight windows, and trusting his receivers to make plays downfield.

While the offensive line likely won’t be able to give him the same kind of time against the quality teams in the second half of the season, nor will WRs be able to make the same athletically dominant plays, there is no doubt that new offensive gurus Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day have not only fine-tuned the QB’s mechanics, but figured out how to rewire his in-play process as well.

If Barrett is able to maintain anything approaching the level of comfort in, and command of, the offense through the end of the regular season, there is no doubt that the Buckeyes will be in the College Football Playoff, and Barrett will be in New York for the Heisman Ceremony.

“Also, Ohio State’s been passing the ball really well (and 37 times a game so far), especially for a team that couldn’t throw a ball in a lake successfully last year.”

-Spencer Hall, SBNation

Today, SBNation’s own Spencer Hall dives into the biggest “nightmare” scenarios for the College Football Playoffs that are also still possible. Most of Hall’s Final Fours are framed around some humorous conceit, like “The ‘God Don’t Like Ugly; He Loves It’ Plan” which features Michigan State, Stanford, Alabama, and NC State.

The Buckeyes find themselves in three of the nine scenarios, and while none of them seem all that likely in total, in two of them, Hall’s premise is that Ohio State not only passes a lot, but does so increasingly well.

Silly situations aside, sitting at No. 6 in the most recent AP Poll bodes well for OSU’s playoff chances. While that number has no bearing on the College Football Playoff, it does tend to indicate the level of respect that the college football community has for the one-loss Buckeyes.

If Ohio State remains at or around that spot when the first official rankings come out on Halloween night (which would require defeating Penn State on Oct. 28), it will all but control its own destiny.

Our Gary Danielson thinks you should remember the power of @OhioStateFB. pic.twitter.com/uEi1W04nib

— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) October 18, 2017

While I am loathe to ever refer to former Purdue quarterback turned CBS “analyst” Gary Danielson as an expert on anything, I do think that his analysis of the Buckeyes being the team most likely to compete with Alabama is correct.

Ohio State and Alabama are the only two teams to be in the top-11 of both scoring offense and scoring defense, and as Wilson and Day have gotten more comfortable with the players, the reigns have seemingly been loosened for them to call plays that more fit their offensive philosophies than Urban Meyer’s.

When it comes to recruiting, arguably no school has had the success over the past five years that ‘Bama or OSU have, so to see the teams in a rematch of the 2014 semifinals would be the ideal way to cap off the season. Now, there is a long way to go before either team can confirm their postseason plans, but at this point, I think that this is the matchup that many people across the country are rooting for.

Buckeye Baseball 2017 Schedule (Fire Beals)

Baseball: Scarlet and Gray World Series gives Buckeyes first glimpse of touted recruiting class

DSC_0355-16isc62-530x355.jpg

Ohio State’s baseball team brought in one of its best recruiting classes in team history, landing the top prospect in Ohio — and the highest-ranked recruit signed by a Big Ten school — in freshman starting pitcher Seth Lonsway.

Overall, Baseball America listed this as one of the best recruiting classes in the conference, citing Lonsway as the clear headliner, but also highlighting touted freshmen like catcher Dillon Dingler and Jake Ruby as potential impact players for the Buckeyes next season.

Though the Scarlet and Gray World Series was just a scrimmage for the team, the performances of some of the younger players could lay the groundwork for upcoming position battles in the 2018 season.

Nearly all of Ohio State’s top recruits had a chance to play in Tuesday’s game, with the star of the class — Lonsway — opening the game on the mound.

Here are some thoughts on the performances of the younger players:

LHP Seth Lonsway

To find any faults with the starting pitcher for the Scarlet team would be to knitpick. Lonsway entered the game with the loftiest expectations of any newcomer in the class. He was regarded as the No. 148 prospect on MLB Pipeline’s 2017 Top 200 Draft Prospects and was drafted 557th overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the MLB draft.

The southpaw fanned six batters in the outing and allowed just one run on three hits and two walks over four innings of work.

It is clear why the Buckeyes are excited about his potential. Lonsway immediately flashed his dynamic stuff, spotting a low-90s fastball (it touched 94 a couple times) with plenty of life that he located effectively. If he ever fell behind in the count, he found he could come back to that pitch and help put himself back in the count. It is the most electric left-handed fastball to come out of an Ohio State arm in a long time, and it kept hitters off balance all day.

“It was working inside, working outside. At times, I left it up a few times out of the stretch, which I’ve been working on quite a bit,” Lonsway said.

The secondary offerings were about as steady as would be expected. His changeup was spotty at times, and it was clear the pitch is a work in-progress. When he had the pitch working, it kept both right- and left-handed hitters off balance, but often he lost his touch with it and bounced it in the dirt. The second-best pitch in his repertoire was his curveball. He located the pitch well — though he occasionally lost the grip on it — and it always seemed to keep hitters off balance.

Lonsway is far from perfect, but head coach Greg Beals knows he could be a star player for the Buckeyes. It took him a few moments to ponder what Lonsway needed to improve on before citing the inconsistency in the southpaw’s secondary pitches as the key to improving.

“He’s got a good changeup to go with his breaking ball, just a little bit better command of his offspeed stuff to go with the explosive fastball that he has,” Beals said. “That’s his next evolution is just the command part of his game and getting that intact because he’s got all the tools necessary to be a great pitcher at this level.”

C Dillon Dingler

Lonsway’s battery mate did not have quite the same impact on the game the starter had, but his tools jumped out. The swing was easy and fluid, and built to make plenty of contact. He combined that swing with a patient approach at the plate and a good eye. And though he was never a great power hitter in high school, his 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame gives him space to develop some pop in his bat.

What stood out the most about Dingler was his defense. He is athletic for someone of his size, and his above-average speed and athleticism helped him block pitches in the dirt and serve as an effective receiver for his pitchers. He possesses a missile for an arm, though the accuracy wavers at times. Base-runners will have a tough time running on him once he is able to harness the power in his arm.

Lonsway said he feels comfortable with Dingler catching behind the dish, and said the freshmen tandem could be a dynamic pairing for the Buckeyes.

“He’s got a great arm behind the plate, just very smooth and very fundamentally sound,” Lonsway said. “I have a lot of confidence when I’m on the mound and he’s behind the plate. I love throwing to him. He’s caught me quite a few times this fall, so it’s been a pretty good duo for us.”
