Who’s going to cover this athletic freak?!

Ohio State had their chance back in 2014 to snag 247’s No. 1 tight end prospect in the country, Mike Gesicki, and recruiting experts even tilted their Crystal Ball predictions to an 88-percent chance that Urban Meyer would be able to sign him, but things just didn’t workout that way. Gesicki committed to Penn State, while the Buckeyes missed out entirely on the tight end position in their star-studded 2014 class. But it’s safe to say the nation’s best collegiate tight end has no qualms about signing with James Franklin’s Nittany Lions.

Mike Gesicki says he never second-guessed decision to commit to #PSU over #OhioState, even as Buckeyes won title. Been at peace with choice.

— Tyler Donohue (@TDsTake) October 25, 2017

I spoke with Gesicki in October 2013, days after his #PSU commitment. Said hardest part of recruitment was telling Urban Meyer his decision. https://t.co/XHszXDox36

— Tyler Donohue (@TDsTake) October 25, 2017

Standing at 6’6, 252 lbs with a 40-inch vertical (measured back in 2014), the Penn State tight end is the definition of a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses and is built to be a force on Sundays.

Over the last two seasons, Gesicki has racked up 72 receptions for 907 yards and nine touchdowns. Of those 72 receptions, 37 have moved the chains and 21 have gone for 15-plus yards. He comes down with jump ball after jump ball, and is borderline impossible to defend one-on-one. It also doesn’t hurt that Trace McSorley has the utmost confidence in his tight end, even when blanketed by multiple defensive backs.

What makes him so tough to defend is his size, his long arms and his hops that would have you confused with a Division I basketball player. Speaking of basketball, Gesicki was one of New Jersey’s top forwards, and actually sat down with Coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke while on a recruiting visit to talk about potentially double dipping in both football and hoops.

His basketball attributes show up on the football field, as he has the ability to box out the defender and snatch the ball at its high point like he’s going up for a rebound in traffic.

Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, they haven’t fared well against the limited big receiving options that they’ve squared off against this season. In the opener, 6’4 receiver Simmie Cobbs Jr. put on a jump ball clinic against the 5’10 Denzel Ward — the only receiver to win his individual matchup against Ward this season. Ward was caught consistently with his back facing the football, which allowed Cobbs to track the ball and make the catch over the smaller cornerback. The defensive backs have since done a better job to get their bodies turned around and find the ball, but they haven’t really had to face any physically imposing receivers or tight ends — other than Oklahoma’s 6’5 tight end Mark Andrews who was forced out due to injury early in the contest.

So how will the Ohio State defense try to limit Gesicki? He’s too big for a defensive back and he’s too athletic and too good of a route runner for a linebacker. It might be a variation of physicality off the line of scrimmage and a mix of defensive backs who possess different skill-sets. Jam him up at the line of scrimmage to tire his legs out and throw off timing to give the better cover guys in the secondary a slight advantage.

“[Gesicki’s] about 6-foot-7,” Greg Schiano said. “We’ve just got to have different ways to try to get people on him.”

10_26_2017_10_52_36_AM.jpg

Ohio State’s Swiss-Army Knife Jerome Baker has a different idea to limit the tight end.

“Don’t allow it to be a jump ball,” Baker said. “Be physical on him before he even gets the chance to jump like that. When it’s that high, he’s going to be a tough one. Just got to play through his hands and some way, some how get it out.”

That seems much easier said than done.

Podcasting about Penn State, the alternate uniforms, and times that video games pissed us off.

You’re definitely already aware of this, but it’s worth a reminder:

Saquon Barkley is very good.

You know it. I know it. The Ohio State coaching staff damn sure knows it.

Barkley is a transcendent talent that has the ability to put his team —or, quite literally, the other team— on his back, and is the main reason Penn State is one of the best teams in the country.

Penn State’s opponents have used a variety of strategies against Barkley this season, to various degrees of success. Iowa chose to let him run wild and clamp down on the rest of the Penn State offense. Northwestern and Indiana made it a point to try and limit his damage, and force other players to beat them. Meanwhile, Michigan tried to put a 6’4”, 242 linebacker in coverage against him. (Spoiler: It didn’t work out well.)

So which route will Ohio State take on Saturday?

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holy Land, Matt Brown and Colton Denning preview Ohio State/Penn State, and discuss how the Buckeyes might defend Barkley. The guys also break down other key matchups and more from the game, including:

  • This being the moment where the passing game can finally prove that its turned the corner against a strong defense.
  • Why the run game will flourish if J.T. Barrett and his receivers can connect early.
  • Making the most of big plays against a Penn State defense that doesn’t give up many.
  • What the guys think of the all-gray alternate uniforms, and more!

They also talk about times video games made them angry, and preview the rest of Week 9’s loaded slate of games!

The Buckeyes could seal the deal with a few top prospects if they can stave off the Nittany Lions.

Maryland, Florida standouts heading to the 614

We are just a few days away from Ohio State's contest against Penn State on Saturday, one with serious playoff implications. As expected, the list of recruits planning to be on hand for the battle with the Nittany Lions was already borderline ridiculous and on Wednesday, that tally got even more impressive.

Class of '20 defensive end Bryan Bresee of Damascus (MD) revealed on Twitter that he will be making the trip up from Maryland to take in the game inside raucous Ohio Stadium.

Making my way up to Ohio State on Saturday #Buckeyes

— Bryan Bresee (@bryan_bresee) October 25, 2017

While Bresee has plenty of time before he ultimately has to figure out where he wants to play at the next level, getting the 6'4, 260-pounder on campus is a major deal. Bresee is undoubtedly headed towards being one of, if not the very best player in his class.

Bresee has already acquired 20 offers to date and the programs included are definitely major ones. Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Penn State, and the Buckeyes are just a few programs who have already offered and begun their respective pursuits of the highly skilled defensive end.

Also expected, according to Andrew Lind of Eleven Warriors, is '18 safety Tyreke Johnson of Trinity Christian Academy (FL). Obviously, this is a name that Ohio State has long pursued but hasn't gained much traction thus far despite the Buckeyes having a former teammate in Shaun Wade already in the program.

It will be interesting to see what the weekend visit does for the two parties. Johnson is a fringe five-star prospect and one thing is for sure, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer likes those.

Johnson, the 38th overall player in the class, will be making his first stop to the campus since June of 2016, where he participated in one of the Buckeyes' camps.

As of now, Georgia is the projected landing spot for Johnson. However, the Clemson Tigers seemed to have the momentum in this race for highly-touted safety. We will see if the Buckeyes have the time to make up some ground and put themselves squarely in the mix for the 6'1, 191-pounder from the Sunshine State.

Gant, Nester returning to Ohio State

As far as current commits go, Ohio State will host a good amount of them on Saturday. On Wednesday, we got news that two current Buckeye pledges will also make the stop to take in the Big Ten contest.

For this year's class, '18 linebacker Dallas Gant of St. John's Jesuit (OH) will be making the short trip down to Columbus. The last reported visit that Gant made to Ohio State was in July. However, it wouldn't be farfetched to say that Gant could have made more recent stops with how close he lives to the campus.

Switching gears to next year's class, '19 offensive tackle Doug Nester of Spring Valley (WV) is also expected to be roaming the sidelines of Ohio Stadium on Saturday. Nester, who has been committed to the Buckeyes since August, will be back for the first time since his July stop, when he participated in the annual Friday Night Lights extravaganza.

For Ohio State, having prospects already in the fold on campus this Saturday is a major deal. It will allow those commits to make pitches to the uncommitted talent that will also be on hand.

Also, how much money are Big Ten championships worth?

“These are aruably (sic) the two best teams in the Big Ten, as the Nittany Lions are No. 2 in the nation, while the Buckeyes are No. 6. The winner will be in the driver’s seat to win the Big Ten East and advance to the league title game, where a shot to earn a playoff bid probably will be on the line.”

- Tom Dienhart, BTN.com

In his article, Dienhart lays out the four keys to this Saturday’s matchup between No. 2 Penn State and No. 6 Ohio State. While he discusses things like PSU’s linebackers vs. quarterback J.T. Barrett, running back Saquon Barkley vs. OSU’s LBs, and the Buckeye secondary vs. the PSU wideouts, the matchup that he leads with is the one between the Ohio State defensive line and the Penn State offensive line.

Ohio State’s unit has been hailed as the best defensive front in college football, not only because of the breadth of talent on the line, but because of the depth as well. D-line coach Larry Johnson has assembled a room that can rotate in anywhere from six to 10 players without a significant drop in productivity.

Sophomore Nick Bosa leads the way for the Buckeyes with 10 tackles for loss, also the best in the conference, but Tyquan Lewis, Tracy Sprinkle, Dre’mont Jones, Sam Hubbard, and Jalyn Holmes are also capable of disrupting any play at any time.

With the creativity that Penn State head coach James Franklin and offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead have used in getting the ball to Heisman frontrunner Barkley, the Buckeye defensive line will need to win the battle in the trenches to be able to keep Barkley under control. If Bosa, Lewis, et al. can win the battle up front and free up the linebackers to make plays, it should give OSU some breathing room against the country’s best scoring defense.

Also, the unit’s ability to stay fresh against a fast-paced, creative, and bruising offense could pay huge dividends if the game is close late.

It also wouldn’t hurt the Ohio State cause if Barrett could make a few plays around the goal-line like this one from the 2012 contest.

Best 1-yard TD run you've ever seen?

Discuss!@OhioStateFB legend @BraxtonMiller5 still amazes us. pic.twitter.com/SkFsj43rLN

— Ohio State on BTN (@OhioStateOnBTN) October 25, 2017
“(Urban) Meyer makes more money than all but three of his peers. Two of them - (Nick) Saban and (Dabo) Swinney - are the only coaches who have won national titles more recently than Meyer. The third, (Jim) Harbaugh, is still looking for his first win against Ohio State.”

- Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

Today, USA Today published its annual look at the state of college football coaches’ salaries. After looking at the list, the obvious joke is that in the top four “one of these things just doesn’t belong here,” as Saban, Swinney, and Meyer have all won national championships (and in the case of Saban and Meyer, multiple), while Jim Harbaugh has yet to win a collegiate conference title since the 2006 Pioneer Football League.

The coach did get his Stanford Cardinal teams to runner-up positions in the Pac-10 in 2009 and 2010, before taking his San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl and another conference championship game in the NFL.

However, Harbaugh bashing aside, it is interesting that with Michigan and Ohio State at third and fourth, the next Big Ten teams on the list are Penn State and Iowa at 12th and 13th. The SEC leads the way with nine schools in the top-25 on the list, while the B1G is tied with the Pac-12 with five apiece.

One of the explanations for why the Big Ten has gone from also-ran to arguably the best conference in football for each of the last two years is because Meyer has forced the conference’s other coaches (and athletic directors) to up their game. As the rich get richer in the B1G, will other schools on the outside of the championship race start ponying up the cash to try and be competitive?

“We’re still showing 10 teams with more than a 20 percent chance to make the playoff, the same 10 we had last week: Alabama and Ohio State as more likely than not, then TCU, Clemson, Washington, Penn State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Miami and Georgia tightly bunched between 20 and 30 percent.”

- Cade Massey and Rufus Peabody, The Washington Post

Whether it’s Bill James, Billy Beane, Daryl Morey, Five Thirty-Eight, or your fantasy sports obsessed co-worker, everybody is trying to use data and analytics to predict what will happen in sports.

Over at The Washington Post, Massey and Peabody have published their latest forecast, and they currently have Ohio State projected to win the Big Ten, and advance to the College Football Playoff. They have the Buckeyes as a 54 percent favorite to make the final four.

In fact, only the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide (76 percent) has a better shot at making it to the playoff than the Buckeyes. ‘Bama and OSU are also the only teams with better than 50/50 odds to do so.

If you dive into their analysis, Penn State comes in as the sixth most likely team to make the CFP (tied with Wisconsin), but at 26 percent, they are less than half as likely than the Buckeyes to get that playoff berth.

Massey and Peabody estimate less than half of a loss for OSU through the end of the regular season, while the Nittany Lions are estimated to lose 1.1 games. So, despite PSU’s undefeated record, and last year’s upset in Happy Valley, apparently, the smart money is on the Buckeyes.

LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Earlier this week, a hype trailer was released for the alternate uniforms the Ohio State Buckeyes will be wearing against Penn State. Now, another trailer has been released.

The new hype trailer for the Nittany Lions game opens with a close-up of a wolf’s face, before cutting straight into a video clip of the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions at the line of scrimmage—with a wolf’s low growl being heard.

A little later in the video, the phrase ‘Defend Your House’ leads into an aerial shot of The Horseshoe. At the end of the video, J.T. Barrett is heard hyping up the team as highlights from the season flow one after another.

The whole trailer gets you amped, and is definitely worth watching.

Ohio State takes on Penn State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Fox will broadcast the game, with Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt and Jenny Taft on the call.

The Nittany Lions have very few weaknesses. Stopping the run might be one of them.

The author Jim Harrison died last year at the age of 78. He was as august a personage as will likely ever emerge from the state of Michigan, the kind of person who smoked life to the filter and told of its joys in fiction and non-, in poems and in cookbooks. He was, it feels safe to say, one of the last century's truest experts in the wondrous things life has to offer us.

Harrison once wrote that "humans are ill-prepared for the miraculous. It's too much of a jolt and the human soul is not spacious enough to deal with it. What happens when we sense and see the eternal in the ordinary present?"

A fair question, to be sure. And one made all the more difficult to stomach knowing that it's watching Saquon Barkley run with a football that occasionally makes me feel that way, like I'm witnessing something of the eternal. He is a transcendent talent, and rooting against him really sucks, is what I'm saying.

Barkley is a terrifyingly skilled runner, receiver, and returner. Ohio State has the unenviable task of trying to contain him and outscore him this coming weekend. How in the world are they going to do that?

The stats

Name: J.K. Dobbins

Number: 2

Position: RB

Year: Freshman

Height/Weight: 5'10, 208 lbs.

Line: 100 carries, 775 yards, 5 TDs; 7 receptions, 65 receiving yards

Dobbins is obviously a tremendous talent himself, and the great news is that he doesn't remotely have to try to do things alone—his nominal backup, Mike Weber, was a 1,000-plus yard back last season, and J.T. Barrett is as capable a runner as you'll find at the QB position.

Opposition research

That loaded backfield is really going to matter when the Nittany Lions come into Columbus hoping to take a second consecutive game from the Buckeyes. Despite steamrolling their way to the No. 2 spot in the AP and Coaches' polls, James Franklin's team has actually been relatively pedestrian when it comes to defending the run: 47th in rushing defense by S&P+, 30th in preventing explosive run plays, and 89th in power success rate (which gauges a team's ability to stop runs from short yardage on 3rd and 4th down).

Given that Penn State has faced just one rushing attack that could even be considered "pretty good" (Michigan, No. 26 by S&P+), that doesn't bode well for the Nittany Lions. The Buckeyes boast the fourth-best ground game in the country, and containing the three-headed monster of Dobbins, Weber, and Barrett will be a tall task for Franklin's squad.

Still, the Nittany Lions are loaded with talent on D. Linebacker Koa Farmer and defensive end Shareef Miller have combined for 14 run stuffs and 10 tackles for loss this season, while safety Marcus Allen has four run stuffs of his own to go with his two forced fumbles. It'll be the toughest defensive battle the Buckeyes have faced so far in 2017.

What to watch for

While the Nittany Lions are middling against the run, they've been outstanding against the pass all season. It'll prove to be a stiff test for J.T. Barrett, who seems to have found his passing rhythm anew in the Buckeyes' last five games against overmatched opponents.
