Get out of here with that garbage hot take.

“Iowa, on both sides of the ball, knew exactly who the Buckeyes were and how to stop them. The Buckeyes had no idea who there (sic) were. So let's get to it. Has Mayer (sic) lost his edge?”

-Doug Lesmerises, cleveland.com

As blasphemous as it might seem when looking at the totality of Meyer’s time in Columbus, this blazing hot take has been scorching up the interwebs since Ohio State’s historic, embarrassing 55-24 drubbing by the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday.

However, before you chug your Skip Bayless Haterade™, remember that Meyer is less than three seasons removed from winning a national title, and that his overall record as the Buckeye head man is still 68-8 (.895%).

There is no doubt that things are a little rocky right now for the Buckeyes, and that the team hasn’t consistently looked the same since the dream 2014 season, but to say that Meyer is degrading as a coach because he is now “a 53-year-old grandfather,” and that he is moving to the hands-off, CEO model of coaching is antithetical to what is actually going on, and to the thesis of Lesmerises’ article as a whole.

In his piece, Lesmerises says that Meyer is a “culture coach,” and that he mostly leaves the Xs and Os to his assistants. But, that isn’t something that is new, Meyer has always been the big picture guy who was great at getting the most out of his players. Therefore, how does that lead to the softening of his “edge”?

If the problem is with the coaches who are directly working with the players, perhaps you could say that Meyer missed on some coaching hires, but again, given the individual coaches’ resumes, that seems like a stretch (although, Lesmerises did expand on this idea in another article, specifically pointing a finger at former NFL defensive coordinator and OSU’s new linebacker coach Bill Davis).

Could it be that it has taken longer for the program’s new coaches and players to gel than was originally anticipated? Absolutely. But, to say that this is somehow indicative of Meyer losing his edge, even temporarily, is extremely short-sighted and solely of the moment.

In fact, in addition to the admitted truth that the coaching staff still has not found its footing as a cohesive unit, I would argue that Meyer’s “edge” might actually be the thing that is leading to the recent rash of disappointing results for the Buckeyes.

As Lesmerises says, Meyer can just about get any recruit that he wants to come to Columbus, meaning that it is incumbent upon him to go and get the best players for his team, whether they be from Pickerington, Miami, Dallas, or San Diego. The down side to getting the best talent from around the country is that they don’t have the inherent buy-in to the distinct, Ohio State culture and tradition that most of the team’s fans do. Eventually that can have an impact, especially on a team that is lacking in experience.

And that is where the other side of Meyer’s dangerous success comes into play. The Buckeyes have had 19 players drafted into the NFL in the last two seasons alone, not to mention a handful of other players signed as undrafted free agents, many of them leaving before exhausting their collegiate eligibility. At some point, competing with an inexperienced, albeit talented, roster is going to lead to some roadbumps, but I think most people would prefer those roadbumps to the ones suffered by teams who are excited to have one or two players drafted every year.

The point is that the Ohio State football team is nowhere near functioning at its max potential right now, and laying that at the feet of the head coach is perfectly acceptable, given that the buck stops at the top. But, to question if Urban Meyer, a man who has won nearly 90% of his games in Columbus, has all of a sudden lost his ability to coach, or even manage, his team is ludicrous, even in this age of click-bait sports commentary.

“Momentum is building in Ohio for a college basketball event similar to Indiana’s Crossroads Classic.”

-David Jablonski, Dayton Daily News

For years under Thad Matta, and long before, it was the stance of the Ohio State men’s basketball team to avoid scheduling games against other in-state, DI programs. As the state’s flagship school, and the only one in a major college conference, that was certainly in OSU’s prerogative.

The thought was that no matter the result of the game, there was no upside for the Buckeyes. If they beat Dayton, or Xavier, or Cincinnati, then it was expected for the big dog to dominate. However, if say Dayton was to beat OSU 60-59, like in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, it would be seen as a black eye for the Buckeyes, letting one of their “little brothers” beat them up.

However, it appears that those concerns are now all but being ignored as new Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann has openly discussed the idea of putting together an Ohio version of the Crossroads Classic held in Indiana every year. Remember that Holtmann comes to Columbus from Indiana’s fourth(?) biggest basketball program in Butler.

According to Jablonski’s article, discussions have already begun. Ohio State previously announced that they will open up each of the next two seasons with a home-and-home against the Bearcats. While it likely won’t happen any time in the next few seasons, these are promising developments in a state whose basketball prowess shouldn’t have to take a backseat to anyone.

“The upsets in the Big Ten East were the biggest playoff plotlines from Week 10, as the stock of the entire conference dropped as a result.”

-Heather Dinich, ESPN.com

I’m not telling you anything that you don’t already know, but things ain’t looking good for the Big Ten to get a team into the College Football Playoff. With both Ohio State and Penn State losing their second games of the season this past weekend, unless all holy-hell breaks loose, they aren’t getting in. Meaning that the B1G’s best option might be the still undefeated Wisconsin Badgers, who, as of the first playoff rankings, were sitting at ninth.

Now, certainly, they will move up a spot or two with their conference brethren taking a tumble, but there is also the potential for an undefeated No. 10 Miami to jump the Badgers after a decisive win against No. 13 Virginia Tech.

So, even if Wisconsin moves up to No. 8 this week, they still would have two SEC teams, two Big XII teams, two ACC teams (assuming Miami move up), and independent Notre Dame ahead of them. Because there is a likelihood that the conference foes will eventually meet up, if they do, only one is likely to drop out of contention with a loss, leaving at least three teams and the Irish ahead of Wisconsin, who still has no guarantee to remain undefeated.

So, if you are banking on the B1G continuing its streak of playoff participants, you might want to start rooting for 2007 levels of chaos.

Our latest podcast picks up the pieces after the Buckeyes’ embarrassing loss at Iowa.

Excluding the bowl-banned 2012 season, Ohio State has entered the final week of the regular season with a legitimate shot at playing for the national championship in every season of the Urban Meyer era. Well, every season until now.

After Saturday’s blowout loss to Iowa, Ohio State is almost certainly out of the playoff hunt, and faces the very real possibility of things going off the rails with both Michigan State and Michigan left on the schedule.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holy Land, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn wonder if Ohio State can rebound and finish the season strong, and recap everything that went wrong on Saturday versus the Hawkeyes, including:

  • J.T. Barrett’s ominous Pick-6 to open the game, and why he was uncharacteristically forcing throws, even when the game was still close.
  • Why this game felt doomed from the beginning, and a discussion on the coaching staff looking completely unprepared for what Iowa was doing.
  • The littany of defensive mistakes, and how an unlikely bad game from the defensive line led to the linebackers and secondary getting exposed.
  • Lamenting the lack of touches for J.K. Dobbins, wondering why Mike Weber was returning kicks, and more.

After breaking down the game, the guys call for a youth movement, wonder whether the Buckeyes can avoid a four-loss season, and discuss what a successful year at this point would be.

You can find the podcast on our iTunes page, and we encourage reviews, comments, criticisms, etc. to help us deliver the best possible audio product. The coach discusses what it will take for the Buckeyes to rebound against Sparty.

Well, there’s no way around it, Saturday’s 55-24 beatdown at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes has certainly changed everything about the season for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Instead of practically controlling their own destiny when it comes to the College Football Playoff, now their only shot to make the final four would be for unforeseen, unmitigated chaos to happen at the top of the rankings.

However, Urban Meyer and his team do not have any time to wallow in their situation, as they will host the suddenly resurgent Michigan State Spartans who are riding high, following a 27-24 victory over Penn State. The winner of Saturday’s OSU-MSU matchup will essentially have a two-game lead on the Eastern division pack, due to head-to-head victories, with Ohio State’s regular season-ending battle with Michigan still to come.

On Monday, Urban Meyer talked to the media about the team’s failures on Saturday, and what would need to change for them to beat Michigan State for the first time in Columbus since 2007.

Iowa Recap

  • Meyer admitted that there were a number of “devastating” penalties that kept drives alive for Iowa, and they have been addressed, but in games against good teams, you can’t have things like that happen.
  • The coach said that Nick Bosa told him that there was no intent to head-butt Iowa QB Nate Stanley. He just lunged at him and helmets collided.
  • He also mentioned that the disparity between J.T. Barrett’s performance against PSU and Iowa was surprising, and he thought that Barrett especially tried to force it before the end of the first half.
  • Meyer said that the disappointing performance on Saturday was a combination of Iowa playing very well, and his team not.
  • He added that Iowa executed their gameplan remarkably well, and after a few three-and-outs by the OSU offense, they began to panic, which played into Iowa’s hands.
  • Meyer said that whenever something goes as badly as it did on Saturday, you don’t want to just blame it on miscues, you want to address why those things happen, and not just how.
Michigan State Preview

  • Meyer said that there shouldn’t need to be any extra motivation to get the team ready to play the Spartans. Since he got to Columbus, he noted that the games between the teams have been “prize fights.”
  • He said that the team will need to fix the offensive turnover issues against MSU to be successful.
  • Meyer also mentioned that MSU has added in a stronger passing attack this season. Even though some of the yards were due to multiple overtime periods, gone are the days when the Spartans were 70% power run.
Depth Chart

  • Meyer discussed that internally there have been discussions about how much J.K. Dobbins gets the ball. He said that the starting running back should have more than six carries, but because they got behind by so much, there weren’t as many opportunities to run.
  • He also said that if the defense is forcing the QB to keep the ball on zone reads, they need to figure out ways to get the ball to the tailback.
  • Meyer also admitted that the depth on the offensive line is “not even close” to where he would like it to be.
Miscellaneous

  • Before the press conference began, Ohio State announced that tickets were still available for Saturday’s game against Michigan State.
  • Meyer says that the way you keep a team motivated after a national championship is almost certainly out of the question is to build an environment of a team that cares about each other from Day 1. It won’t be dependent on just one speech from the head coach.
  • The coach acknowledged that having the quarterback have more attempts rushing than the leading rusher is not ideal, but when the team is down, that is occasionally a “get out of jail free card.”
  • Meyer said that when you have as many players leave early for the NFL that’s part of “life in the big city.” He said that it is a difficult numbers game that you have to manage, and it occupies a lot of time for the staff.
  • He added that you have to watch that players don’t come to Ohio State focused on using the school and program as a stepping stone to the next level.
  • Meyer admitted that the coaching staff has discussed the fact that they have been moving away from the power-running team that they were in the past. At its height, they were 65-70% run, and now it is down to 45-50%.

The Buckeyes will look to rebound from the devastating loss to Iowa this coming Saturday at 12 p.m. ET. Ohio State will play host to the Michigan State Spartans, who are looking to seize control on the Big Ten East race. The game will be broadcast on FOX.

The Buckeyes are looking for another piece to their class of 2018.

Chris Holtmann and the Ohio State basketball coaching staff are just days away from signing four top notch prospects, but that doesn’t mean they are done trying to add another piece or two to their already-talented class of 2018.

According to Adam Zagoria, Holtmann and crew are actively pursuing senior point guard Courtney Ramey, a former Louisville pledge, who recently decommitted from the Cardinals.

The Buckeyes aren’t the only program trying to add the four-star talent to their roster for next season. Joining Ohio State in the pursuit for Ramey are programs such as Villanova, Oklahoma State, and Texas, per Zagoria’s report.

Villanova, Oklahoma st, Texas and Ohio State all met recently with 2018 PG Courtney Ramey, his dad tells me.

— Adam Zagoria (@AdamZagoria) November 4, 2017

While they find themselves up against some stiff competition, the 6’3 Ramey would fit perfectly in with what the new look Buckeyes are wanting to build in Columbus.

Wanting to secure another lead guard to a class that already consists of combo guards Luther Muhammad and Duane Washington Jr, the Saint Louis, Missouri native has shown he’s more than capable of running a offense while attending Webster Groves.

One of the most polished players in the Midwest, Ramey accounted for 20 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and two steals per game last season.

Before he can suit up in the Scarlet and Gray, Courtney needs to make his way to Columbus. Pegged as a spring signee, the next step for the Buckeyes would be trying to get Ramey on campus for an official visit.

Will the top 50 talent end up in a Buckeye uniform? Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest in the world of Ohio State recruiting.

2019 PG visits OSU

Before visiting with the Butler basketball program on Saturday, class of 2019 point guard Tyrell Terry of De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, MN, made the trek to Columbus on Friday to see what the Ohio State Buckeyes have to offer on and off the court.

2019 PG @tyterry05 is on an unofficial visit with @OhioStateHoops today and with @ButlerMBB tomorrow. #IslanderPride

— DeLaSalle Basketball (@DeLaSalleMBB) November 3, 2017

“My visit was great, I really liked everything I saw. A few things that stood out to me were the campus and the athletic facilities,” Terry told Land-Grant Holy Land.

While Ohio State hasn’t offered him, the Buckeyes shared with the 5’11, 160-pound guard that they plan on keeping a very close eye on him.

“I had a chance to speak with all the coaches at some point in the day. The main thing they told me was that they are looking for a point guard in my class and that I will be a priority to them moving forward.”

Terry has yet to earn a scholarship offer from Holtmann and crew, but has landed numerous college opportunities during the recruiting process so far. Picking up five scholarship offers, Iowa, Nebraska, and Drake are among the programs to throw their hat in the race for Terry early.

Starting to pay closer attention to where he wants to take his talents, Ohio State is one program Terry would like to hear more from.

“An offer from OSU would be huge for my recruitment. I was really impressed with what I saw today so receiving an offer and allowing me the chance to have the option and opportunity to play there someday would mean a lot. When I think of OSU basketball, I think of tradition. This school has a huge tradition and that tradition is well known around the country and that stood out to me,” Terry said.

As a sophomore last season at De La Salle, Terry, the 22nd ranked class of 2019 point guard, per 247Sports, averaged nearly 10 points a contest for the Islanders, who finished the year off with a final record of 29-3 and a sixth-straight Minnesota Class 3A basketball championship.

OSU->CMH Postgame

has anyone ever attempted to catch a flight directly after a football game? I know traffic around campus is bad, however I’m not sure it would take longer than an hour to get to CMH. Thoughts?

I'll say it will depend on 2 things:

1. When everybody starts to leave the stadium. If the game is close and everyone waits and leaves at once after the game is actually over it can get more hectic.

2. Parking, i.e. how far you park from the stadium and how long it takes you to get out of the lot/garage.

Once you get away from the campus area it is only about 15 to 20 minutes to the airport. I suggest parking on the east side with a definite route to I-71 south then connecting to I-670 east. The best spot to park would be in the stadium lot, quickly get to your car, exit on Woodruff to High St, right (south) on High, etc. However, that lot requires a special pass and is not open to the general public.

Just sayin": I live very close to the airport, I park in the garage beside (closest to) the student union (enter off of College Rd), exit the garage and go south on High St*, lately I've been going south on High St. and turning left on Fifth Ave., continue to you get to the I-71 ramp, etc. You could Google map it.

* High St has some construction and a closed lane past 11th. I know which lane I want to be in to more easily get through it, however, you might want to turn left at 11th, which also connects with I-71 south.

Anyway, I usually get home in under an hour.

Former Buckeyes continue to make noise, both good and bad, in the NFL this week.

Well, folks. Saturday was not a great day for Ohio State football, but there were still several alumni who made Buckeye Nation proud on Sunday. Week 9 in the NFL featured a few rookies in the headlines, Ted Ginn Jr. continuing to be a deep threat, and a dance party by Darron Lee and the Jets’ defense.

El Guapo gets ejected

Under new head coach Kyle Shanahan, even despite injuries, Carlos Hyde is on pace for a career-high season. On Sunday, he continued this campaign with over 100 yards of total offense -- 12 carries for 41 yards and nine receptions for 84 additional yards. His day was cut short though, when the running back was ejected with just over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter for defending his quarterback during a melee broke out against the Cardinals.

— Endzone Brasil (@Endzone_Brasil) November 6, 2017

After going through three coaches in his first four years in the league, Carlos Hyde is finally getting some help offensively that could create potential for a long career with San Francisco. The 49ers brought in former New England backup Jimmy Garoppolo ahead of the trade deadline, and finally gave the team a chance to succeed with a good option at quarterback.

Already seeing an increased role with the addition of Shanahan, one would expect Hyde to continue to be a big part of the game plan as Garoppolo finds his footing with his new team, and creates chemistry with his receivers.

Hyde is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season (the last of his rookie contract) and is definitely creating a market for himself. The Niners have been on the upswing, despite their winless record, losing by three or fewer points in five games this season. With the potential of Garoppolo running the offense, Hyde might consider staying on the West Coast next year — if the Niners extend an offer for him to stay, that is.

Things get chippy for Lattimore

The New Orleans Saints boast one of the best defensive rookies in the NFL. Former Buckeye stud Marshon Lattimore has worked his way into Defensive Rookie of the Year conversations and has already become an issue for opposing quarterbacks. That fact bore out in Week 9 against the Bucs.

During a game in which Lattimore had one pass breakup and four total tackles, he was jawing near the sideline with an injured Jameis Winston, when the QB poked Lattimore’s helmet and the Buckeye answered with a little shove. Bucs wideout Mike Evans came from behind laying Lattimore out with a cheap shot in the back, leading to an all-out scuffle on the Tampa Bay sideline.

(At least he wasn’t alone. Later in the video, you can see teammate De'Vante Harris come flying in to get Evans off of Lattimore before he could lay a punch.)

The NFL’s trade deadline came and went earlier in the week, and the Panthers decided to send their No. 1 receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, to the Bills for a couple of draft picks. The move, while potentially dangerous for the Carolina offense, should open up more opportunities for former Buckeye rookie Curtis Samuel.

Used as the H-back at Ohio State, he’s been lining up with the wideouts since he was drafted to the Panthers earlier this year. Following a string of injuries that kept him out during some of training camp and preseason, Samuel is finally in a position to make an impact.

In his first taste of additional game time, Samuel finished Week 9 with three catches for 23 yards and one rushing attempt for 14 yards. He has yet to have a breakout game, but if he’s going to do so, it has to be in the second-half of the season — if not, he might relegate himself to a full-time backup role.

Zeke still not suspended

If you’re trying to keep up with the Ezekiel Elliott suspension saga, our friend Jeanna Thomas is doing excellent work over at SB Nation to keep you up to date. Elliott spent most of the week expecting to miss Week 9, in what would be his first game served of the six-game suspension that was originally handed down ahead of the 2017 NFL season. Then, on Friday, the NFLPA won yet another temporary stay on the suspension, leaving the running back eligible to play on Sunday.

In what may, or may not, be one of Zeke’s last games of the season, he put work in on the ground, rushing for 93 yards on 27 carries and one score. Another Buckeye rusher for Dallas, Rod Smith, is expected to take some of Elliott’s carries, should the latter be forced to serve his suspension at some point this year.

Plays of the Week

Ted Ginn Jr.

In his 11th year in the league, and Buckeye legend Ted Ginn Jr. is still an incredible deep threat. The receiver made four catches for 59 yards in Week 9, with a 36-yard touchdown. Despite an up and down career, Ginn looks like he is in good enough shape to play forever.

Darron Lee and the Jets

This week’s edition of Thursday Night Football was between the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, but the real headline was the Jets defense taking a little dance break during the matchup. Former Buckeye LB Darron Lee had a great game with eight total tackles and his second sack of the season, but he also had some fun with his teammates leading to the best Twitter hashtag search results of the weekend: #JetsDanceToAnything. (You’re welcome.)

I have a few of these in the works, but the #JetsDanceToAnything may be my favorite trending hashtag of all-time. @NYJets #JetUp #Jets pic.twitter.com/WCYu0Wnec6

Other Notes

  • This week’s Monday Night Football matchup features just one Buckeye, when the Green Bay Packers (Corey Linsley) play host to the Detroit Lions.
  • After dealing with an injury for a few weeks, Panthers safety Kurt Coleman is back healthy, and had a season-high 10 total tackles in Sunday’s win over the Falcons.
  • Safety Vonn Bell had a nice day on Sunday for the Saints, with five total tackles (three solo) and a forced fumble against the Falcons.
  • Giants LB Curtis Grant had his second six-tackle game in a row, continuing to prove that New York activating him from the practice squad was a good decision — one of very, very few for the team this season.
  • Buckeye kicking legend Mike Nugent has been able to put his poor 2016 to rest with his resurgence in Dallas. He finished Sunday’s afternoon game 4-for-4 on extra point attempts.
  • It still seems like Washington is trying to phase Terrelle Pryor Sr. out of the offense, and in Week 9 against the Seahawks, the former Buckeye quarterback snagged only two catches for 17 yards.
Injury Report and Inactives

  • Week 3 was the last time rookie Gareon Conley has taken the field for the Raiders, after a blistering start to the season. With expectations running high, the Buckeye has been dealing with a lingering shin injury that continues to keep him sidelined.
  • The Colts have fewer Buckeyes active on game days as the weeks go on; this week John Simon was inactive with a lingering neck injury, and second-year linebacker Joshua Perry is still looking for a way to get a spot in the lineup.
  • After having only 10 offensive snaps the past two weeks, the Houston Texans set WR Braxton Miller as inactive for Week 9. Cowboys’ rookie Noah Brown was another healthy scratch on Sunday, having yet to notch a spot in the lineup.
