The Tide may have got the nod based on success in previous seasons.

“Past success and Nick Saban, that’s why Alabama is in.”

-David Pollack, via Brad Crawford, 247Sports

Ohio State is set to play the USC Trojans in the Cotton Bowl Classic on Dec. 29. It’s a major bowl that most teams in the country would be clamoring to get into, but is a bit of a letdown for the Buckeyes, who had been hoping for a playoff spot. Instead, the Alabama Crimson Tide managed to make it into the No. 4 spot in the playoff, behind Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia. By accepting Bama into the fold, the playoff committee omitted two conferences--the Big Ten and Pac-12--from contention in the College Football Playoff. Those conferences’ champions, Ohio State and USC, both won an additional conference matchup against a highly ranked opponent to earn their bids, while Alabama did not make its conference title game.

According to ESPN analyst David Pollack, the committee selected Alabama over Ohio State based on past success, rather than what the Crimson Tide demonstrated on the field this season. Pollack cited that the Bama defense, which has been one of the best in the nation in recent years, has taken a step back this year. While some of this erosion can be attributed to injury (including some serious problems at linebacker), Pollack called the unit “the most vulnerable defense at Alabama in a long time.”

Despite Pollack’s words, Bama still ranks second nationally in total defense, and has given up just 138 points on the season. The Tide opened as a one-point favorite over Clemson in the CFP semifinal--a rematch of last season’s championship game which the Tigers won. This year will be the third-straight season that the two teams have met in the playoff.

While the same “past success” argument could be made for why the committee selected Ohio State last season, the group still forewent choosing two teams from the same conference, thereby shutting out an additional conference from the final four.

“He’s a firecracker. So I was just telling him like relax, we’re going to be in a good position, we’re going to be in a good game. And we’re going to go against a great team.”

-Ohio State linebacker Chris Worley, via Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

Several of the potential College Football Playoff contenders had watch parties together Sunday afternoon as they awaited the reveal of the top-four from the playoff committee. Ohio State did not. The team returned home early Sunday morning after a thrilling, six-point win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game, with Urban Meyer admitting that he didn’t get to bed until about 4:30 a.m. Instead of gathering together just a few hours later, Meyer gave his players the chance to process the news, for better or worse, in their own ways.

Senior linebacker Chris Worley took things well, remarking that it was a blessing to be in the position that they are, while Meyer reflected on how he has grown over the years in his response. He continuously referred to his senior players in the room with him at the press conference, who kept him on track with the bigger picture. While he used to take things hard, “where I couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep,” he has attempted to move towards reflection and appreciation in tune with what Worley has expressed.

Meyer emphasized the bigger picture of what his team had accomplished, even pointing out the spot in the facility where the recognition of this year’s Big Ten Championship would go. His senior quarterback echoed that sentiment, stating that “what we achieved last night in the locker room and what we achieved last night being Big Ten champs; no one can take that from us.”

While Meyer acknowledged that his team was likely devastated at being left out of the playoff--J.T. Barrett admitted that he was “hurt by us not getting in”--but that the team is handling it like a family. The coach said he loves his team and that they have done everything right up to this point, and that they are going to now focus their work on beating yet another great team.

“The reality is, the beauty of arthroscopy is that it involves three incisions of less than 1 cm, a minimally invasive procedure and quick recovery.”

-Dr. David Chao, San Diego Tribune

J.T. Barrett knows what it’s like to miss a game due to injury. Even worse, he knows what it is like to get injured against Michigan and be sidelined for the postseason while the backup takes over and wins the game for his team. Getting knocked out against the Wolverines last month must have been terrible deja vu for the senior quarterback, as he indicated Saturday: “Last time I got us to the party, but I wasn’t let in.”

Credit Barrett’s toughness for making a comeback from arthroscopic knee surgery in less than a week to take his team to their first Big Ten title in three years. And while Barrett certainly deserves the credit he’s received, the reality is that, from a medical perspective, there was minimal risk to Barrett in playing Saturday. Such dangers might include swelling, pain and the possibility of infection.

Some, like all-pro left tackle Joe Thomas, questioned the wisdom of Barrett coming back so soon, especially if he was not given the opportunity for a second opinion from another physician. Thomas, who himself has had significant knee surgeries, indicated that such practice is standard in the NFL. He also acknowledged his feelings regarding the coaching staff having too much control in these situations.

Given what is known about the injury, it would seem that Barrett’s surgery was done to trim a torn meniscus, which is minimally invasive and which does not require extended recovery. The bigger danger, however, is the fact that Barrett may have been playing on the injury for the duration of the season, which could have led to greater risk down the road.

Nonetheless, Barrett was ready for Saturday, and was able to manage his recovery to get back on the field within six days of his surgery to lead his team to a title.

Plus, we recap the Buckeyes’ Big Ten Championship win, and preview their Cotton Bowl matchup versus USC.

Let’s get this out of the way: It sucks that Ohio State didn’t make the College Football Playoff.

The Buckeyes were mostly incredible all season, and it’s a shame that they won’t have the opportunity to play for a national championship after Saturday’s Big Ten Championship win over Wisconsin. That being said, it isn’t the playoff committee’s fault that they aren’t in their third playoff in four seasons. It really only comes down to one thing:

Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa Don't lose by 31 to Iowa

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) December 3, 2017

When they got blown out by Iowa last month, Ohio State left itself no benefit of the doubt come selection time, and it ultimately cost them a shot at returning to the playoff.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holy Land, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn discuss the committee’s decision, why they think the criteria to make it is so different from year to year, and how Ohio State’s inconsistency all season didn’t earn them many favors.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, as the guys also break down everything that happened in the Big Ten title game, including:

  • J.T. Barrett’s up-and-down performance, and whether it was right for the coaching staff to play him after knee surgery.
  • The monster games from Nick Bosa and J.K. Dobbins.
  • Recognizing how dominant the Buckeyes were on both the offensive and defensive lines against a stout Wisconsin front.
  • Being happy with a season that ends in a Big Ten title, looking ahead to the Cotton Bowl versus USC, and more!

The Buckeyes look to move to 2-0 in the Big Ten tonight against Michigan.

Ohio State had a big day over Wisconsin Saturday--both on the field and the hardcourt. The Buckeyes handed the Badgers their worst loss ever on the road at the Kohl Center, an 83-58 victory, to open their Big Ten slate. It was an important bounce back for Ohio State, which had dropped its last two games against Butler and Clemson after blowing second-half leads, and a big win as they move to 1-0 in conference play. Now, Holtmann’s squad heads home to Columbus to face the Michigan Wolverines in their second Big Ten game of the season.

The Big Ten season began early this year to account for the Big Ten Tournament in Madison Square Garden, which is scheduled a week earlier than normal. After tonight, Ohio State has five nonconference matchups remaining, including one with No. 13 North Carolina, before getting back into Big Ten play. Ohio State has struggled in conference play recently, going 7-11 last year. The Buckeyes last won the Big Ten Tournament in 2013, and earned at least a share of the regular season title the previous two seasons. Last season, in perhaps the most embarrassing exit possible, Rutgers knocked Ohio State out in the play-in round of the conference tournament.

There is a lot to improve on in conference play this year, and Chris Holtmann has his team off to a great start. Against Wisconsin, freshman forward Kaleb Wesson led the team in scoring with 19 points, while junior forward Keita Bates-Diop added yet another double-double on the young season. Senior Jae’Sean Tate moved over to point guard as Holtmann shook up the starting lineup once again with excellent results. Ohio State had their best shooting day of the season, while holding Wisconsin under 40 percent from the field.

Michigan, meanwhile, opened up conference play with a 14-point win over Indiana Saturday. Previously, they had lost to North Carolina 86-71 n the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Wolverines are averaging just under 77 points per game on their way to a 7-2 record. The Wolverines lost their top two scorers of last season in Derek Walton, Jr. and Zach Irvin, but return three of last year’s starters in junior forward Moritz Wagner, senior guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman and senior guard Duncan Robinson. Wagner has already proven to be a leader on the team early in this season, averaging just under 16 points per game to lead the team.

Head coach John Beilein took the helm of the Wolverines in 2007, and has amassed a 222-137 record in the decade since. He’s also had recent success in the conference. After finishing fifth in the regular season conference standings last year, Michigan won the Big Ten Tournament and earned a berth in the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament.

Ohio State leads the all-time series with their rival 96-76, with the Buckeyes winning three of their last four, including their most recent matchup last season which Ohio State won 70-66. The Buckeyes own an 803-713 record all time against the Big Ten.

Numbers to know

78.3%

The Buckeyes were prolific shooters Saturday against Wisconsin, especially in the first half. The team connected on nearly 80 percent of their shots from the field in the first 20 minutes and finished the entire game shooting 66 percent. Even more impressive is that the Buckeyes shot 54 percent from behind the arc. Junior point guard C.J. Jackson, coming off the bench, led the long-range effort, hitting three of the Buckeyes’ seven shots from three-point range--all in the first half. Tate was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field in the first half, finishing the game hitting seven of his eight total shots.

1.76

Michigan has averaged just nine turnovers per game on their way to the fourth-best assist-to-turnover ratio in the country. That mark is way better than Ohio State’s ratio, which is under one. The Buckeyes have had serious issues protecting the ball this season. In games like Saturday’s versus Wisconsin, the team made up for it with outstanding shooting. In other matchups, turnovers prove to be a killer. They will need to be especially cognizant of protecting the ball against a team which so rarely coughs it up on their own.

62.4

Per the usual, Michigan is a defensive powerhouse on the floor, allowing just 62.4 points per game. That mark is good for second in the Big Ten and 29th in the NCAA. While the Wolverines allow their opponents to shoot 43.5 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from three-point range, middle-of-the-road marks nationally, their slow pace of play keeps games relatively low-scoring in nature. In fact, they are 341st in the country in possessions per game, averaging just 66.8.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

If you haven’t heard, the redshirt junior is the lifeblood of Ohio State basketball at the moment. Bates-Diop is averaging 17.3 points per game--one of four Buckeyes averaging double-digit scoring--and 10 rebounds per game. He has also recorded a double-double in all but three games this season. Against Wisconsin, Bates-Diop recorded a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with 17 points. He’s shooting 51 percent from the field, including 43.5 percent from three-point range. The forward is in his fourth year with the program and has proven to be a powerhouse under Chris Holtmann’s system. He has been the most consistent player on the court this season for the Buckeyes, and his leadership and experience will be needed especially as Ohio State moves into conference play.

Musa Jallow

The freshman guard from Bloomington (IN) started in the Buckeyes’ last outing Saturday and, though only scoring two points on the day, still made a positive impact on the court, adding three assists and four rebounds. On the season, Jallow has not been a prolific scorer--he is averaging just 5.3 points per game--to go along with three rebounds per outing. However, the 17-year old has demonstrated a lot of potential while playing with an experienced Ohio State team and can continue to improve throughout the season. He will certainly make some mistakes, especially as we are still early in the season, but he has already brought energy to the court and to his squad.

Michigan

Moritz Wagner

The 6-foot-11 forward is living up to the preseason hype, where he was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten team and to the Wooden Award watch list. The junior from Berlin, Germany leads his team in scoring and rebounding with 15.6 points and 8.4 rebounds, respectively, as one of three returning starters from last season’s squad. He had 13 points in Michigan’s last outing versus Indiana in 28 minutes on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Ohio State will need to rely on the 6-foot-9 Kaleb Wesson to defend Wagner.

Jordan Poole

The guard replaced Charles Matthews, who had been Michigan’s leading scorer heading into the matchup, just 14 seconds into the Wolverines’ matchup with Indiana Saturday. Poole finished the outing with a team-high 19 points and demonstrates the confidence that John Beilein has in his bench players. Even more impressive, the freshman had five three-point shots in his best scoring game of the season, with 11 of his points coming in the first half. After staying on the bench for the Wolverines first few games of the year, Poole has seen more playing time in the past couple of weeks, and he has scored in double figures in three of his last five games.

There’s gonna be a lot of eyes on this game.

The Ohio State Buckeyes may have missed out on a College Football Playoff berth, but they get a pretty good postseason matchup with the USC Trojans. Back in the day, bragging rights—as well as the occasional national title—were on the line when these two storied programs met in the Rose Bowl.

While the playoff system didn’t give the ‘Grandaddy of Them All’ the Pac-12/Big Ten matchup this season, the Cotton Bowl has been called in to suffice. On Dec. 29, these teams will meet at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas to determine who this year's Cotton Bowl champion will be.

In the rankings, it’s a matchup of the No. 5 Buckeyes and No. 8 Trojans. It’s one of the better New Year’s Six bowl matchups, and is one that pits two schools with big recruiting profiles against one another. With that being said, a few high-profile recruits tweeted out their reaction to this bowl announcement.

You better believe I will be in attendance for the Ohio State vs. USC game

⚡️THOR ⚡️ (@JaidenWoodbey) December 3, 2017

Four-star safety Jaiden Woodbey (Fontana, CA/St. John Bosco) is an Ohio State commit that currently resides in enemy territory. Even though he’s in Cali, his tweet points to him making the trek to Arlington for the game.

After putting up sensational numbers at St. John Bosco, over 29 schools have come with offers for Woodbey to attend their respective school. At one point, the 247sports crystal ball had three schools—OSU, Oklahoma, and USC—as the likely landing spots for the safety. On Feb. 7, Woodbey made his commitment to the Buckeyes.

He’s the fourth-best player in the state of California for the 2018 class, according to the 247sports composite, and is considered the No. 2 safety and No. 29 player in the entire class.

Stacking up with the rest of Ohio State’s 2018 class, Woodbey has the sixth-highest overall grade, coming in with a .9826. (Note: we’re using 247sports’ grade.)

I will most definitely have my eyes on this game https://t.co/LvepR6Trne

— T H E J I A N T (@Jackthejiant) December 3, 2017

The No. 1 offensive lineman for the 2018 class also made a tweet about the OSU-USC announcement. Jackson Carman (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) has over 40 offers, but it’s being predicted that he’ll end up at Ohio State when all is said and done.

On top of being the best lineman, Carman is the best player in Ohio, and is graded as the seventh-best overall player in the class.

But, recruiting is a wild and twisty road—and anything is possible.

Of the offers he has, Clemson and USC have shown interest. Could this game play a role in his final decision? Only he knows that.

If Buckeye fans felt nervous about him not committing to the Scarlet and Gray just yet, there might be a good sign from one of his retweets from Woodbey.

Go to the game with me bro https://t.co/7DsyPug4Si

⚡️THOR ⚡️ (@JaidenWoodbey) December 3, 2017

A Buckeye commit possibly attending a game with an Ohio product could bode well for Urban Meyer and his Bucks.

Also, Braxton Miller and Adolphus Washington had career-high games.

As the end of the 2017 NFL season draws near, injuries have sidelined a good portion of the former Ohio State players in the league, while others continue to best their former career-highs. One Buckeye was a surprise inactive due to “violating team rules” while another stepped up in place of a suspended teammate.

Several Buckeyes participated in the “My Cause My Cleats” campaign, and sported some pretty great footwear to draw attention to various causes, issues, and charities.

Your weekly reminder; Fan voting is open through Dec. 14th for the 2018 Pro Bowl, and there are 20 Buckeyes you can vote for on the ballot.

Here’s how Buckeyes in the NFL fared in Week 13:

Roby back in the spotlight

Despite not being a starter, Bradley Roby has seen plenty of minutes for the Denver Broncos over the past few seasons. The Broncos had (formerly) touted the best secondary group in the league, and Roby steadily contributed to that with the occasional pick and pass break-up.

This has been a tough year for Denver, and last week proved to make things worse with Aqib Talib being ejected and subsequently suspended for a full-on fight with Raiders WR Michael Crabtree. With Talib being out, Roby saw more minutes on Sunday and had a great day with four total tackles, a forced fumble and recovery, along with three big pass breakups.

Looks like @BradRoby_1 still knows how to change a game. Jay Cutler passes to Kenny Stills who goes for extra yards. Roby meets Stills with a fist to the ball and ensures a turnover when he recovers the ball himself.

Buckeyes flock to Injured Reserve

It seems like every week there’s another former Ohio State player being sidelined for a long stretch. Before the season even started, second-year Taylor Decker was given the IR designation while he underwent surgery. About 10 weeks later, Decker was activated off PUP and was able to make it back on the field for the second-half of the season.

Not everyone is so lucky though. This week alone, two more Buckeyes joined their breatheren on the sideline, as LB Curtis Grant (Giants) and ST Nate Ebner (Patriots) saw their seasons come to an end thanks to injuries sustained last weekend. The list of Buckeyes on IR now stands at 10, which is about 25% of the former Ohio State players suiting up in the NFL.

More career-high performances from Buckeyes

This week’s Sunday Night Football matchup featured the Philadelphia Eagles (Malcolm Jenkins) and Seattle Seahawks (Nick Vannett). From the start, second-year tight end Nick Vannett was part of the gameplan with two grabs for 19 total yards in the first half, and finished the day with a big 21-yard catch (tying his career-long) in the fourth quarter. Just a week after his first career touchdown, Vannett finished Week 13 with a career-high 40 receiving yards.

After being named the starter for the Bills, DE Adolphus Washington had a career day against the Patriots (of all teams). The Buckeye not only claimed his first sack of the 2017 season, but it was on the oft-coveted, Michigan alum, target, Tom Brady. Despite the final score (23-3), Washington had a career-high game with six total tackles.

Second-year receiver for the Texans, Braxton Miller, also had a career game on Sunday. Against the Titans, the Buckeye put up a career-high 71 yards receiving, including a career-long 57-yard reception (missing the endzone by a yard).

On his way to finally making an impact, after an up-and-down career thus far — and littered with injuries — Miller was once again bitten by the injury bug and missed most of the second-half with a concussion.

Plays of the Week

Michael Thomas

Despite having a hell of a second season in the NFL, wideout Michael Thomas scored just his second touchdown of the year on Sunday. He continues to prove why “you can’t guard Mike” and displayed an incredible awareness of his feet in order to secure the score. He finished the day with 70 yards and one touchdown.

Joey Bosa

One of the best DE’s in the NFL, Joey Bosa got back to sacking quarterbacks a week after breaking his streak of doing so. On Sunday against the Browns, the Buckeye recorded a career-high seven solo tackles. He also had a huge hit for a strip sack against QB Deshon Kizer.

Other Notables

  • This week’s Monday Night Football matchup is an AFC North showdown between the Pittsburgh Steelers (Cameron Heyward, Ryan Shazier) and the Cincinnati Bengals. Shazier is questionable heading into the matchup, having missed Thursday’s practice with an ankle injury.
  • After getting a second chance to extend his NFL career, kicker Mike Nugent was released by the Dallas Cowboys as their franchise kicker (Dan Bailey) is back from an injury. This might have been the veteran’s curtain call on a 12-year career.
  • Speaking of the Cowboys, running back Rod Smith is getting plenty of carries now that Ezekiel Elliott is suspended. A week after recording his first NFL touchdown, Smith made his way back into the endzone for the second score of his career — this time on Thursday Night Football — finishing the day with 10 carries and 27 yards. His brother (and teammate) Jaylon Smith was super hyped for Rod’s success.

Injury Report and Inactives

  • Giants CB Eli Apple is once again inactive this week, this time due to a hip injury — he’s coming off two weeks missed to tend to his Mom, Annie Apple, after brain surgery.
  • Rookie sensation Marshon Lattimore was inactive on Sunday for the Saints, with the team taking things slowly and not rushing his return from an ankle injury.

  • Starting linebacker for the Jets, Darron Lee, was a surprise addition to this week’s inactive list. No reason was given ahead of the game, only that it was a coaching decision, but Lee told reporters his benching was due to “violating team rule”.
  • As has become the norm, QB Cardale Jones was a healthy scratch in Week 13, as he holds firm to the No. 3 quarterback spot for the Chargers.
