Idaho’s top DT is officially a Buckeye!

After committing to the Buckeyes somewhat out of nowhere on December 12, the Idaho native Tommy Togiai is now officially an Ohio State Buckeye.

The country’s ninth best defensive tackle according to 247Sports brings incredible depth to the defensive line haul for the Buckeyes in 2018. As one of the three elite defensive tackles to become Buckeyes, Tommy gives Ohio State their first Idaho pledge and a serious pat on the back for going into enemy territory and holding off schools such as USC, Washington, and Utah who were all serious threats to land the four-star.

At 6-foot-3, 290 pounds, Togiai brings a veteran-style body that will only continue to improve once he gets to Columbus under the tutelage of Micky Marotti and the rest of the strength and conditioning staff. With his incredible abilities, Larry Johnson has to be excited about what is heading to campus with the rest of the 2018 haul. Having put in serious work to land Togiai, the signature itself makes all of the hours more than worth it.

A 2018 U.S. Army All-American, Tommy will be able to showcase why he is a top 130 player in the country and just how fortunate the Buckeyes are for signing this elite prospect to help bolster the defensive line and continue the trend of unstoppable rush-men. The thought that Ohio State couldn’t land the elite defensive tackle prospect has officially come to an end and Togiai is a major reason why.

Scouting Report

Togiai didn’t face the country’s best competition at Highland high school in Pocatello, Idaho, but the 6’3” 290-pound tackle shouldn’t be discredited for routinely being a man among boys on the field. His first step and ability to gain leverage is apparent, and Togiai fits the mold of an elite run stuffer thanks to his ability to control and shed blocks at the line of scrimmage.

He demonstrated excellent awareness in reading screens and trap blocks, but could struggle to find the field as a three-down linemen until he develops some consistent pass-rush moves. Given the Buckeyes’ perennially loaded front, don’t be surprised if Togiai works his way into the lineup after a redshirt year as an early-down defensive tackle.

Despite a strong push by Oklahoma, Proctor kept his commitment to Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

Since Urban Meyer and Kerry Coombs arrived in Columbus, Ohio State has turned into a secondary factory, routinely turning out NFL-caliber defensive backs at an alarming rate. The next player to join the B.I.A. position group is Owasso, Okla.’s Josh Proctor, who just faxed in his National Letter of Intent.

The recruiting process for the No. 8 ranked safety in the country has been an interesting one, starting with a surprise commitment in April, to rumors of a potential flip, but in the days leading up to the Early Signing Period, the four-star Proctor made his intentions clear, and he made good on his commitment today.

The second ranked player in the state of Oklahoma, the 6’2, 190-pound safety comes to Columbus as the nation’s 76th ranked player according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Defensive coordinator Greg Schiano led the recruiting on Proctor, who also held offers from Oklahoma, Michigan, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Michigan, Texas, and more.

While it’s become normal for OSU DBs to wait their turn to get regular playing time, Proctor just might have the talent to see the field early and often for the Buckeyes.

Scouting Report

Proctor is one of the best prospects Oklahoma had to offer. According to the 247sports composite, the four-star is the No. 2 rated player out of the Sooner State. A combination of athletic ability and long arms has propelled Proctor to not only being one of the best in his home state, but a top-10 safety in the 2018 class. He helped bring Owasso High School a state title after stuffing the stat box; Proctor nabbed four interceptions and 35-plus tackles, while also seeing time on the offensive side of the ball, too.

He’s dynamic, and has the potential to be a star at the next level.

Less than a week after committing to the Buckeyes, the wideout has made it official.

It was a bit of an odd recruiting cycle for Ohio State. Not in the way that the Buckeyes were missing on talent (they certainly weren’t), but rather that a large number of Ohio State’s late commits had been targets for years, and took all the time they could exploring their options, rather than committing early.

MO➡️OH

Welcome to #Zone6, @kamm_o! #GoBucks #Supreme18 #NSD18 pic.twitter.com/l0JDyuLyrH

L’Christian “Blue” Smith, K’Vaughan Pope, Jaelen Gill and Jeremy Ruckert all took at least a year after receiving an offer to commit to Ohio State, though not many took their time like the newest Ohio State signee, Kamryn Babb did.

Babb, who committed just over a week ago, December 12th, received his offer back in June of 2016, and accumulated more than 20 offers in the year and a half since, though Ohio State never left the driver’s seat. Despite a season ending injury, the Buckeyes’ interest in Babb persisted, and after multiple visits to campus, Babb finally pulled the trigger and joined the class.

When he committed, Babb was the 20th member of the 2018 class, and the second receiver, alongside L’Christian Smith. The Christian Brothers College (St Louis, MO) product is ranked by 247Sports as the 65th best player nationally, 12th best receiver, and number two in the state of Missouri.

Scouting Report

Babb doesn’t fit the Buckeyes’ recent infatuation with freak-sized receivers, but the 6’1, 189-pound athlete is about as shifty as they come. Babb regularly made something out of nothing on the very same flash screens that offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson made a staple of the Buckeyes offense this season. He was also regularly deployed in the wild cat, although we haven’t seen the Buckeyes consistently return to that package since Braxton Miller graduated.

Babb offers the right combination of explosiveness and route-running ability to thrive as an H-back on offense, and the nation’s No. 5 receiver has more than enough ability to make an impact from Day 1 on offense. Still — don’t be surprised if Babb earns some early-career special teams reps due to his combination of speed and physicality that he displayed on the defensive side of the ball in high school.

The Florida-to-Ohio recruiting pipeline is alive and well.

Ohio State went into Florida yet again to grab a skilled player, as 4-star Orlando CB Sevyn Banks signed his National Letter of Intent, and is now a Buckeye.

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

Banks initially committed to Ohio State in April, and a torn ACL that cost him his entire junior season wasn’t enough to stop programs like Florida, Tennessee, LSU, and Florida State from also offering the 6’1, 180-pound corner.

Banks is rated as the No. 235 overall player, and No. 26 CB in the class of 2018 by the 247Sports Composite. He joins DT Taron Vincent, S Tyreke Johnson, and RB Brian Snead as the four Floridians expected to sign with the Buckeyes so far in this year’s class.

Scouting Report

The biggest thing that pops on Sevyn’s film is his sheer athleticism. He plays both ways in high school, and handled kickoff returns, and dominates in all facets of the game because of that athleticism. At 6-foot-1, his versatility and experience at receiver help him greatly at his true position, cornerback, where he’ll suit up for Ohio State.

He has outstanding ball skills, and plays with aggression and confidence, two things Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano values. He’s a surprisingly willing tackler, and knows how to use his frame to make plays in run support.

Technically speaking, he’s still pretty raw, and will need work, both in the weight room and with defensive backs coach Kerry Coombs before he’s ready to play significant time in Columbus. However, with his height, athleticism, work ethic, and pure speed, the ceiling is extremely high for Banks.

The four-star standout has signed his letter of intent with the Buckeyes.

When four-star rated tight end Jeremy Ruckert received his scholarship offer from Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer in May of 2016, the New York native shared the following with Land-Grant Holy Land.

“We were on the phone for a while and had a great conversation about football and my family and he ended the conversation by saying I have an offer to play football at the Ohio State University. It felt so surreal and it was an honor to get it from him.”

Well over a year later, the 6’5, 240-pound U.S. Army All-American can now be considered an Ohio State student athlete after inking his national letter of intent with the Buckeyes during the early signing period.

Verbally committed to the Buckeyes since July, the wait is finally over for Ruckert and the Ohio State coaching staff.

With numerous tight ends returning to the program in the fall such as Rashod Berry, Luke Farrell, and Jake Hausmann, Ruckert will add another quality option for the Buckeyes, who look to replace longtime starter Marcus Baugh.

A big time athlete with soft hands, Ruckert, the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of New York, proved he can make things happen on both sides of the ball as a senior for Lindenhurst High School.

Leading the Bulldogs to an undefeated 12-0 season and a state championship, Ruckert, the top overall tight end, and 29th overall prospect in the entire class of 2018, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, accounted for nearly 1,100 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns, while also securing 61 tackles and 13 sacks as a senior.

Scouting Report

As blue chip prospects go, Jeremy Ruckert had somewhat flown under the radar up until late-June in his recruitment. He holds 30 offers from some of the nation’s elite programs, but it wasn’t until Nike’s The Opening event two weeks ago that the recruiting world was truly introduced to Jeremy Ruckert. Ruckert put on a show, both in drills and in 7-on-7 for team Alpha Menace. He was named 1st team offense following the conclusion of The Opening, along with fellow Buckeye commit Jaelen Gill. Catches like this one are a big cause for Ruckert gaining his fifth star in the newest 247sports player rankings.

Ruckert’s newfound attention has been well-deserved for a while. He’s been the top tight end in the 2018 class for months now, and it’s great to see him finally getting recognized. He’s the complete package as a tight end, and plays a very similar game to former four-time NFL pro-bowler and all-pro Jeremy Shockey. He has the athleticism of a wide receiver, despite his larger frame (6’6, 240 lbs), and is a matchup nightmare for corners and linebackers alike. He plays almost exclusively as a wide receiver for his high school, and is the first tight end recruit we’ve seen under Urban Meyer that could truly play the “Jordan Reed position” we saw him deploy at Florida.

Because of his time spent at receiver in high school, his need for development in his blocking skills could keep him off the field as a freshman (similarly to what we saw with Binjimin Victor or Austin Mack last season), but his strength and athleticism will likely make for an easy transition at the next level, especially with Kevin Wilson leading his development. Ohio State hasn’t seen this athletically gifted of a tight end since Dr. John Frank, who was arguably the best tight end in Buckeye history.

The Tennessee native puts pen to paper and is now officially a Buckeye.

The long wait to officially sign his letter of intent with the Ohio State University is now over for four-star class of 2018 running back Master Teague.

Committing to Ohio State over the likes of Georgia, Auburn, and others after having the chance to sit down with Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff during a visit to the Columbus campus for a summer camp, Teague puts pen to paper nearly seven months after giving OSU his verbal pledge.

TN➡️OH @MasterTeagueIII is officially a member of @ToteNation! Welcome to the family!#GoBucks #Supreme18 #NSD18 pic.twitter.com/jhXm5uzK5W

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

Teague spoke to Land-Grant Holy Land back in the fall about what led him to end his recruitment in favor of the Buckeyes soon after announcing his commitment.

“There were several things that caused me to like OSU. I really liked their culture. I liked what they do with Real Life Wednesdays. I like the internships I saw their guys go on. I like the Athletes in Action opportunities. I like that Coach Meyer is not only feel responsible for helping his guys get an education but also getting a job. I like that we will be able to win a national championship. I am a very motivated person but the coaches at OSU added more motivation in me that was unique.”

While he didn’t earn his scholarship offer from the Buckeye coaching staff as an underclassman like many others, Teague has proven that he has what it takes to lead an offense down the field time and time again as a member of the Blackman Blaze (TN).

Rushing for over 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns as a junior, Teague was well on his way to another excellent season before sustaining an ankle injury that cut his senior campaign short. Although things didn’t end the way he would’ve liked, the 5’11, 210-pounder accounted for around 725 yards and 11 scores on the ground during his final year with the Blaze.

Joining a stacked Ohio State backfield that will consist of players such as Mike Weber, J.K. Dobbins, Antonio Williams, Demario McCall, and fellow 2018 commit Brian Snead, Teague, the 12th running back, and 259th overall prospect in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, might end up behind the eight ball when it comes to early playing time during his first season with the Buckeyes.

Needing bodies on special teams, Teague, like other true freshman, could see the field next year, but most likely will be inline for a redshirt season. Sitting out next season to bounce back fully from the left ankle injury and learn the playbook might be in his best interest, as it has worked out for many Buckeyes including current Ohio State standout Mike Weber, who wasn’t 100% early on at OSU.

Scouting Report

Teague’s skill set on the football field is extremely rare. At 5-foot-11, 210 pounds, Teague runs a 4.31 40 time(!!!!!). For comparison, Ohio State running back Mike Weber is 5-foot-10, 214 pounds, and runs a 4.52 40 time. That’s not saying that Weber is slow, it’s just saying that Teague is a freak athlete.

With Teague, as is usually the case with freak high school athletes, he’s pretty raw, and has some developing to do on the technical side of the running back position. He’ll need to learn the nuances of the position before he sees the field in Columbus, and thankfully for him, Tony Alford is one of the best running back coaches in the business.

With the sheer amount of raw talent and athleticism that Teague possesses, if he continues to work at honing his craft at Ohio State, he could be in the NFL a few years from now. As a runner, Teague is already very skilled. He has very solid footwork, cuts up the field with purpose, hits holes quickly, runs downhill, and plays with a lot of power. His ability to cut, paired with his strength, is a very dangerous, and very rare combination.

He still needs to work on the things a lot of young running backs need to work on. His patience is good, but it could be better. He has a tendency to get tunnel vision, he needs to survey the entire field so he doesn’t miss open holes, opting instead for more contact, and usually, less yardage. He also needs a lot of help in the passing game, both blocking and receiving, though there’s another back in this class that will likely do a lot of the receiving out of the backfield in place of Teague.

Could the Lake Travis star be the future for Ohio State?

If you’re looking for a high school to call a quarterback factory, look no further than Lake Travis, in Austin, Texas. The Cavaliers have produced an incredible eight straight D1 quarterbacks, and Ohio State signee Matthew Baldwin is the latest in that incredible line.

The streak reaches back to 2006, with Todd Reesing, and went through Garrett Gilbert, Michael Brewer, Colin Lagasse, Baker Mayfield, Dominic DeLira and Charlie Brewer. While the bar set by Baker Mayfield is very high, Baldwin could ultimately be one of the best of the bunch, especially if Ohio State lets him play his game.

Baldwin committed to Ohio State just under two weeks ago, on December 7th. Baldwin had been committed to Colorado State for months, but decommitted on November 30th, mainly because Ohio State had offered in early November.

While the three-star title and former pledge to a G5 school may scare some, Baldwin is a legitimate Ohio State caliber quarterback. He had a monster senior season, and has picked up a ton of major offers over the past four months, as he’s led his team to the Texas division 6A state title game.

Baldwin is ranked by 247Sports as the 442nd best player, the 18th best pro style quarterback, and number 58 in the state of Texas.

Scouting Report

Baldwin is relatively new on the scene of Ohio State recruiting. He’d flown under the radar for much of his recruitment, as he had been committed to Colorado State since July. However, in the past two months, he’s absolutely blown up, picking up six offers since November, after an outstanding senior season that saw him throw for 3397 yards and 41 touchdowns to only six interceptions.

Baldwin may not be the prototypical Urban Meyer quarterback, but in a Kevin Wilson system, he fits extremely well. He’s a capable runner, but his greatest strength is certainly his throwing ability, specifically his accuracy. He’s a smart player, and reminds this blogger a lot of Andrew Luck.

The latest addition to the 2018 recruiting class could begin a new family legacy of Buckeyes.

Four-star offensive tackle Max Wray couldn’t deny the opportunities playing at Ohio State would create, and after flipping to Ohio State from Georgia earlier in the year, he made things official during the Early Signing Period and faxed in his National Letter of Intent.

The 6’6, 289-pound OT out of Franklin, Tennessee is the No. 9 ranked player at his position, and No. 3 overall player out of the state, according to the 247Sports Composite. He held offers from most of the top programs in the country, including Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and even his home-state team, Tennessee.

His decision to change his commitment from the Bulldogs did not come lightly, and once he made that decision, he was all-in for the Buckeyes. He told Land-Grant Holy Land that he was taking online courses to be able to enroll at Ohio State early — all part of his plan to contribute right away.

Well, me and Coach Studrawa are really tight. He’s an awesome guy and a really good coach. I’m really excited to work with him in the future. They basically told me, though, that they want me to come in and participate and compete as early as I can. They gave me an opportunity and it’s up to me to work for it.

The newly minted Buckeye could also be the first of two Wray brothers to end up playing football at Ohio State. Max’s younger brother Jake also plays OT, and despite only being a sophomore, is a beast at 6’5, 290 pounds. Never too early to look at the 2020 recruiting class, the Buckeyes hosted Jake during Max’s visit for the Oklahoma game, and could add another set of brothers to the Scarlet and Gray legacy soon enough.

Scouting Report

Wray likely didn’t face many players that could match up to his 6’6, 289-pound frame in high school, but Ohio State’s NFL-sized line could require him to redshirt and bulk up as a freshman before vying for playing time. Wray played right tackle in high school and displayed uncanny athleticism and flexibility for a player his size. He routinely won at the line of scrimmage with hand placement and strength.

Wray’s devastating ability to block down and create gaps in the run game will fit right in with the Buckeyes’ power-spread run scheme. His frame and ability to move in space could prove to be scary after a few off-seasons in the Buckeyes’ strength and conditioning program.

Another Trinity Christian Academy defensive back is headed to Columbus

Ohio State’s defensive back pipeline isn’t ending anytime soon. It’s hard to argue that any position group has been as consistently excellent under Urban Meyer as the defensive backs, as evidenced by seven draft picks from the group since Meyer’s arrival, including five first rounders. Another first rounder is likely on the way this season as well, with Denzel Ward expected to declare for the draft.

Aside from great coaching, be it from Chris Ash, Greg Schiano, or Kerry Coombs, the main cause of that DB dominance is excellent recruiting, and the 2018 class is no different. After landing six top 200 defensive backs in 2017, Ohio State added five more in 2018, and one of the best of the group is Tyreke Johnson (Jacksonville, FL)

FL➡️OH #BIA gets better! Welcome to the Buckeye family, @Im_showtime_!#GoBucks #Supreme18 #NSD18 pic.twitter.com/Vd6PKBQBwh

Johnson committed just a few weeks ago, on December 5th, shortly after an official viait to Columbus. He was the 21st commit to join the class.

247 Sports has Johnson ranked as the nation’s 38th best prospect, the seventh from the sunshine state, and the fifth best safety in the 2018 class.

In terms of first year impact, the safety position opposite of Jordan Fuller is pretty much open next season, with Damon Webb and Erick Smith both set to graduate following the season. However, with Isaiah Pryor, Kendall Sheffield, Jaiden Woodbey, Josh Proctor, and Wayne Davis all set to battle for the spot next year as well, it would be surprising to see Johnson anywhere but special teams as a freshman.

Scouting Report

The Buckeyes’ never-ending thirst for long defensive backs continues with Johnson’s commitment. Standing 6’1, 190-pounds, Johnson possesses ideal size, athleticism, and ball skills that he routinely demonstrated on both sides of the ball at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida.

Johnson’s willingness to come up and tackle in the run game, combined with enough speed and aggressiveness to lock down his side of the field, makes him an ideal outside corner in Greg Schiano’s press-man scheme. Ohio State doesn’t recruit corners who can’t play man coverage, and Johnson stands out in his ability to also get his head around to ultimately make plays on the ball downfield.

A crowded defensive backs room full of four- and five-star corners could delay Johnson’s arrival on the defensive side of the ball, but his physical mentality and straight-line speed makes him an early candidate to join the piranhas on the kickoff unit.

Following in his brother’s footsteps, the papers are in for the next great legacy at cornerback.

Ohio State football is a brotherhood, and never more so than when the program becomes a landing spot for more than one player in a family. Like Joey and Nick Bosa before them, Marcus Hooker is looking to follow his older brother Malik’s path to the NFL by way of Ohio State. Marcus has made his commitment to the Buckeyes official during the Early Signing Period and faxed in his National Letter of Intent.

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

The three-star CB out of New Castle, Pennsylvania is the No. 57 ranked cornerback in the 2018 recruiting class, and No. 21 ranked player in his football-proud home state, according to the 247Sports Composite. Hooker held offers from multiple Big Ten schools, including Penn State and Rutgers, as well as WVU, Cincinnati and others.

Ultimately, the 6’0, 185-pound legacy is looking to follow in his brother’s footsteps, and then some. Older brother Malik Hooker ended up being featured in just one season in Columbus before becoming a first round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts.

It’s rare to enter the NFL with just one year of film, let alone to get drafted at No. 15, but if that’s what Malik Hooker was able to pull off, then his brother’s ceiling could end up being even higher with more time to develop.

Scouting Report

Marcus is built a bit differently than his brother is. He’s two or three inches shorter, and not as freakish of an athlete as Malik is, although not many people are. Despite a bit of an athletic gap, Marcus is still an extremely long, athletic defensive back that catches the ball very well, just like most Greg Schiano defensive backs. He’s listed as a cornerback right now, but will shift to safety at the next level, as his skill-set dictates.

He may not be the Olympic level athlete that his brother is, but at least according to his high school coach, Marcus may be a better player than Malik was, at least coming out of high school. His game is a bit more refined than Malik’s was, in terms of his coverage skills, tackling ability, and overall technique. He doesn’t have the center fielder-like speed of his brother, but he more than makes up for it with great anticipation skills, and long strides that allow him to cover a large amount of space.

However, that doesn’t mean that he won’t have a lot to learn once he arrives in Columbus. Most of Marcus’ high school success has come on the offensive side of the ball at wide receiver, due to his athleticism. The foundation is there, but as I said, he’ll need to spend a year or two developing his game, especially when it comes to tackling, and the nuances of the safety position in Ohio State’s defense.

Ohio State wouldn’t have offered him if they didn’t think that he had the ability to play at the Big Ten level, and both Greg Schiano and Kerry Coombs are confident that they can mold Marcus into the second Hooker brother to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Buckeyes dip back into Wayne (Huber Heights) High School for another talented athlete.

#Zone6 just got a massive (literally) addition to its ranks today, as 4-star Dayton (OH), WR L’Christian “Blue” Smith signed his LOI and is now an Ohio State Buckeye.

One of the most unique athletes in the country, the 6’6, 200-pound Smith is a top-five player in the state of Ohio, and is rated as the nation’s 5th best ATH, and 120th overall prospect, per the 247Sports Composite.

Hailing from the same high school as Buckeye great Braxton Miller, the Wayne (Huber Heights) product committed to Ohio State in August over offers from Kentucky, Cincinnati, and others.

Here’s what he brings to the field:

Scouting Report

When it comes to wide receiver skills, there are two main things that can turn a good receiver into a great one, and neither of those skills can be taught: height, and speed. L’Christian Smith has both, in excess. Despite being one of the tallest receivers in the country, Smith isn’t very bulky (sub 200 pounds), and runs an incredible 4.4 40-time. That number may be a bit generous, but his speed is not in question, especially with the ball in his hands.

You won’t see Smith running at full speed very often, because for the most part his job at receiver is to track down the often underthrown deep-balls, which he has become very good at over the years. He’s not the most fluid route runner in the world, but his long strides and massive frame allow his to essentially box defensive backs out on inside routes, much like Bengals receiver A.J. Green does.

Smith will never be a huge run after the catch guy, but he’s unlike anyone currently on the roster, and will serve as a great target for whoever is playing quarterback in Columbus a few years down the road.

One of the best players in the state of Florida is now a Buckeye.

The Florida-to-Columbus pipeline is alive and well, as 4-star RB Brian Snead made it official today and became an Ohio State Buckeye.

The 5-11, 200 pound Seffner (FL), product is rated as the fourth best RB in the country, and the 82nd overall prospect in the 2018 class, per the 247Sports Composite. Snead committed to play for the Buckeyes in July, and chose Ohio State over Michigan, Florida, and others.

Here’s what the Sunshine State running back brings to the table:

Scouting Report

The Buckeyes hit another home run out of the Sunshine State. Brian Snead is electrifying with the football in his hands and definitely has the size (5’11, 200 lbs) and running style to be an every-down back. Tony Alford will have to work with him on being patient and not trying to bounce everything outside or reverse the field, but his athleticism and elusiveness is off the charts. Snead is excellent in making defenders miss and possesses breakaway speed. Snead and Jaelen Gill will be a lethal 1-2 punch in the future.

The Columbus, Ohio native has been looking forward to officially being a Buckeye for a long time.

Ohio State has added a local native to the 2018 recruiting class, with five-star all-purpose back Jaelen Gill officially signing his National Letter of Intent. The most recent player to fax in his LOI, Gill is the No. 1 APB in the country, according to the 247 Composite, and is the overall No. 2 player out of the state of Ohio — No. 23 overall throughout the country.

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) December 20, 2017

While signing Ohio talent has always been important for the Buckeyes, there’s been a surprising dip in commits from the Buckeye State under Urban Meyer. Losing Gill would’ve been a huge blow to a program that not only boasts about being a draw for local prospects, but also as a team with a stellar run game.

Hailing from just north of campus, in Westerville, Ohio, Gill has bled Scarlet and Gray his whole life, and looks forward to continuing the long standing tradition of excellence and success.

The incoming freshman spoke with Land-Grant Holy Land in late-June, and noted the benefits to playing so close to home.

I grew up a Buckeye fan, so I was always going to have some sort of bias towards that school. Coach Meyer and Coach Alford started recruiting me real hard. I was talking to them every single day and I was seeing them a lot more. It's a great school, not only for sports, but academically. OSU is about 20 minutes away from my family and friends, so I just feel like I'd be missing out on a lot if I didn't stay home and play for the team I grew up watching.

Despite giving Ohio State fans a bit of a heart attack during his commitment announcement, Gill ultimately ended up choosing his home team.

Scouting Report

Gill was constructed for the H-back position in Urban Meyer’s offense. Standing at 6’1, 182 pounds with blazing speed, Gill will be next in line behind Parris Campbell and K.J. Hill in the slot. He was used more as a running back in high school, but did play some slot, where he showed off his terrific hands and route running.

The Westerville, OH product is the type who will be their lead playmaker for years to come. With Hill and Campbell likely returning, it’ll be tough for Gill to see the field as a freshman, but it’ll be worth the wait.

The newest addition to the Silver Bullets will be a great addition to keep the #LBU reputation alive.

Ohio State added yet another talented out-of-state player to its defense today, as 4-star Dinwiddie County (VA.) LB K’Vaughan Pope signed his letter of intent to become a Buckeye.

The 6’2, 210-pound Pope is rated as the No. 212 overall prospect, and No. 8 best ILB in the class of 2018 by the 247Sports Composite, and had offers from other national powerhouses such as Georgia and Florida. Pope is the second Virginian in Ohio State’s 2018 class, joining fellow linebacker Teradja Mitchell for the trip from the Old Dominion State to Columbus.

Here’s what the versatile Pope brings to the Silver Bullets:

Scouting Report

Pope’s ability on the field is undeniable. He’s got prototypical linebacker size, albeit with a little more weight to add, and a massive ceiling because of his athleticism. He doesn’t have fantastic speed, and will certainly end up as an inside linebacker at Ohio State because of his lack of elite top-end speed, but he’s absurdly strong, and plays with more power than just about any other linebacker in the country.

He plays on both sides of the ball for his high school team, and essentially just serves as a tank on offense, which he carries over to his defensive style as well. He lines up as a running back, tight end, wide receiver, pretty much anywhere you can imagine, and just destroys defenses with his strength and power.

That hard-hitting, physically imposing style transitions extremely well to the defense, as he frequently blows up the run with his hitting ability, while his natural athleticism lets him run with backs and tight ends in coverage. He’s never going to a quarterback-seeking missile like Darron Lee was, but he’s the linebacker equivalent of a sledgehammer in run coverage, and his tape reminds me a lot of former Buckeye and current Dolphin Raekwon McMillan.

The Buckeyes look to continue their tradition of great linebacker play by adding the Ohio native.

Ohio State didn’t have to venture too far for one of the best defenders in the country, as Toledo, (OH) outside linebacker Dallas Gant signed his LOI today, and is now officially a Buckeye.

Listed at 6’3, 225 pounds, Gant is the fifth rated player in the state of Ohio per the 247Sports Composite, and is rated as the ninth-best outside linebacker and 157th overall prospect in the class of 2018.

Dallas_Gant.gif

Gant committed to Ohio State this past May, and chose the Buckeyes over the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Penn State.

Here’s what else Gant brings:

Scouting Report

Dallas Gant is a freak athlete playing linebacker. The 6’3, 225-pound outside linebacker is just the type of defender who shines in today’s college football. He makes plays sideline-to-sideline with ease and often uses his athleticism as a blitzer. He’s quick to sniff out perimeter runs and makes a ton of plays in the backfield. Gant has the athleticism to play some special teams as a freshman and will eventually see his way onto the field as he gains more experience.

The best defensive tackle in the country is officially a Buckeye.

The Ohio State defensive line just got even scarier, as 5-star Bradenton, (FL) defensive tackle Taron Vincent signed his LOI, and is now officially a Buckeye.

The 6’2, 285-pound IMG Academy product is the No. 1 rated DT in the country, and the No. 13 overall prospect nationally, per the 247Sports Composite. Originally committing to Ohio State in April, Vincent had offers from nearly every big-time program in the country, and ultimately chose the Buckeyes over Florida State.

Vincent was able to lean on his dad —5-time NFL Pro Bowler and current NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Troy Vincent— for advice and support throughout his recruitment. “He helped me look at all the schools and figure out Florida State and Ohio State,” Vincent told Land-Grant Holy Land in August. “He helped me just sit down and see the pros and cons about each. He just let me decide from there. He was my guiding hand through the whole process and would give me advice.”

Here’s what Ohio State’s newest defensive lineman brings to the field:

Scouting Report

Meyer and the Buckeyes have landed one of their long-elusive recruiting prizes: an elite defensive tackle. Vincent already knows how to use his 6’2, 285-pound frame to his advantage, as the nation’s No. 1 defensive tackle routinely showed the ability to destroy any and all double-teams in his path. He combines this consistent push and ability to bull rush with a lethal spin move, and Vincent’s ability to free his teammates on stunts could be utilized by the Buckeyes sooner rather than later.

Ohio State is always looking for capable defenders to add depth on the defensive line, and Vincent’s motor and ability to shed blocks makes him a candidate to avoid a redshirt.

Mitchell brings some serious pop to the Silver Bullets.

Ohio State just added another top flight linebacker, as class of 2018 ILB Teradja Mitchell signed his LOI today, and is now a Buckeye.

Mitchell is the 2nd Virginian in Ohio State’s 2018 class —joining fellow LB K’Vaughan Pope— and is rated as the No. 2 ILB prospect nationally, and 39th overall prospect in this year’s class by the 247Sports Composite. The 6-2, 232 pound Mitchell committed to the Buckeyes in June, and held offers from LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and others.

Here’s what Ohio State is getting in the talented Virginian:

Scouting Report

Mitchell is the prototypical, hard-hitting inside linebacker who excels against the run. On tape, Mitchell resembles a previous five-star inside linebacker recruit under Urban Meyer: Raekwon McMillan. Like McMillan, Mitchell possesses great instincts in the run game, and hits like a Mack Truck. He has the football IQ to recognize the play, fight through the rubbish and meet the ball carrier right away. When he meets the ball carrier, he wraps up and drives through the body. Mitchell is an extremely violent tackler who makes his presence felt in the run game.

Like McMillan coming out of high school, Mitchell does not have a ton of experience in the passing game, which makes it look like he’s vulnerable in that area. In regards to Raekwon, contrary to popular belief, the former Buckeye excelled on all three downs and the superb Ohio State defensive coaching staff put him in the right place to succeed. The passing game will be a knock on Mitchell when he arrives on campus, but as an underclassmen, Greg Schiano will utilize his plus-instincts to blitz and rush the passer. Right now it’s tough to see how he would matchup one-on-one with an elite college running back or tight end, but he does possess sideline-to-sideline speed which would indicate an ability to cover at this level. If there was an area to keep an eye on during Mitchell’s senior year, it would be his pass coverage against backs and tight ends.

Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes have the potential to walk away with the No. 1 ranked class.

We have finally reached the early signing period in college football. It’s uncharted territory, as something like this hasn’t been done before.

On the bright side, though, it seems like the Ohio State Buckeyes have a handle on things. Going into the the signing period, the Bucks are projected to have the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. According to 247sports, Urban Meyer’s squad is projected to get 17 recruits to submit their Letter of Intent over the course of the next few days.

We know some of the best will be coming to Columbus, however, there are still storylines unfolding. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

The Cali Kid

Five-star safety Jaiden Woodbey has the makings of an elite college football player to be. The question is simply: what program will he be playing for. Over the last few days, roughly nine Crystal Ball picks on 247sports have pointed to the five-star being part of either USC or Florida State.

Back on Sept. 8, Woodbey made his official visit to Ohio State. However, recents visits with the Trojans and Seminoles have put them at the forefront of the race for the defensive back. In his senior campaign on the high school circuit, the California native had 57 tackles, a fumble recovery, and two interceptions.

Woodbey was an Ohio State verbal commit, but now it looks like the tide has turned against the Buckeyes. If there is a silver lining, it’s that the Buckeyes would still have the No. 1 class if Woodbey in fact didn’t sign to be a Buckeye. USC and FSU have top-50 recruiting classes, but neither are in the top-25 right now.

Keeping talent in the state

With Woodbey being a West Coast kid, it wouldn’t be a shock if he stayed close to home for college. If we’re using that logic, then it wouldn’t be a surprise if the No. 1 prospect in Ohio, Jackson Carman, signed on to be a Buckeye.

USC is in the running for the five-star offensive tackle, too, and we’ll find out at 10 a.m. ET whether or not he will make the trek out west, or if he chooses Ohio State. (There’s also a slim chance he goes somewhere else).

Unlike Woodbey, a miss on Carman would be a huge blow to Ohio State, as they would’ve failed to keep the best player in the state. Meyer has made it a point to get Ohio prospects, and a potential miss on the best OT in the class would be a huge setback.

But let’s look on the positive. If Carman does come to OSU, he would be the highest graded prospect in the class, according to 247sports. If Woodbey does commit to another school, a Carman commitment to the Bucks would basically offset that from a class rankings standpoint.

A crowded QB room

At 11:30 a.m., we’ll also find out where four-star Emory Jones will be signing his Letter of Intent. Like Woodbey, he’s verbally committed to the Buckeyes, but recent developments have shifted toward the Georgia native staying in SEC territory.

Florida is seen as a very real landing spot for the dual threat QB. The overwhelming majority of Crystal Ball predictions for Jones have him headed to the Gators—with the latest of those predictions coming on Dec.18.

The saga of whether or not Jones was actually going to stay with the Buckeyes has been going on for quite some time. He’s been verbally committed to the program since Sept. 30, but his visit to Alabama back in October sparked a belief that he was looking to go elsewhere when the signing day actually arrived.

The quarterback room at OSU is already packed. Joe Burrow, Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell already occupy room, with Haskins looking to be the starter heading into next season.

If Jones does in fact sign somewhere else, how bad does this affect OSU’s ranking in the recruiting race? According to the 247sports calculator, it’ll have a small effect, considering Jones was a top-6 commit for Ohio State. But, if Woodbey, Carman and Jones all decide to not become Buckeyes and all things stay equal with the other schools, then it appears that Ohio State would have a slim lead for the best recruiting class through the early signing period.

Recruiting is a very fluid situation. We’ll see how it all breaks down over the next 72 hours.

Chris Holtmann has the Buckeyes on a 5-game winning streak following their Tuesday night victory.

The Ohio State Buckeyes (10-3, 2-0) kept up with their winning ways on Tuesday night, as they defeated The Citadel Bulldogs, 94-65, inside the friendly confines of Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Keita Bates-Diop has been on a tear this season for the Scarlet and Gray, and he kept that up in their latest victory. He scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shots, with nine of his points coming in the second half. In addition to the points, the forward pulled down four rebounds and four assists.

Another Buckeye that sparked the huge win was C.J. Jackson. The junior poured in 13 points, hitting five shots from beyond the arc. While Bates-Diop was the leader in scoring, Jackson led the team with seven assists.

Kam Williams also got into the scoring party against the Bulldogs, too. He put up 17 on the stat sheet—including a nice jumper from the baseline in the second half. For Williams he had a 10-point second half on 4-of-8 shooting. That second half surge propelled him to having a team-high in scoring for the evening.

For the game, OSU shot 50 percent of the field, making 37 of their 74 (yes, 74) shots. From beyond the arc, they were 13-of-35. Not too far behind them were the Bulldogs, who put up 71 shots. However, the visitors made only 32 percent of the attempts. From the land of three, The Citadel made the same amount of shots as Ohio State, but they did it on 43 attempts, not 35.

All those missed shots from the Citadel cost them on the other end, as Ohio State converted those misses into the (very) occasional fast break. On the night, the Scarlet and Grey secured 22 points of the fast break variety, while the Bulldogs had just two.

Even though the Buckeyes ran away with the win, they committed 12 turnovers—four less than their counterparts. Those Scarlet and Grey giveaways cost them 19 points, but they compensated that by cashing the 16 Bulldog turnovers into 24 points.

A big area where the Buckeyes outgained the Bulldogs was in the paint points. Forty of Ohio State’s points came in under the basket, while The Citadel didn’t even score half that; they put 18 points up on the inside.

Since the loss to Clemson on Nov. 29, the Buckeyes have been on a hot streak. They’ve won five games in a row, including a blowout win over Wisconsin on the road, and a come-from-behind win against rival Michigan.

The next time OSU comes back to The Schottenstein Center for a game will be on Dec. 30. Before that, they’ll be in New Orleans on Dec. 23 for a contest against North Carolina.

Here’s how this all went down.

Twelve seconds into the game, Bates-Diop hit a jumper to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead. Not long after that, though, Tate turned the ball over—leading to an equalizer by forward Zane Najdawi. Tate would atone for his turnover by making a layup on the next possession.

A coupled missed shots by the Bulldogs (and a couple makes by the Buckeyes) would take us to a 9-4 score at the 17:11 mark of the half. Jackson and Matt Frierson traded three-point shots, and not long after that, the score was 14-9 in favor of the Buckeyes as the first media timeout arrived.

So far in the month of December, OSU was shooting 58 percent from the field. In the first six minutes against The Citadel, they connected on 78 percent of their shots. Behind a Kam Williams layup via half-court pass from Jackson, and a Bates-Diop mid-range basket, the home team was putting on a shooting clinic—holding an 18-9 lead with 12:21 left.

On the other end, The Citadel was having a not-so-good half. Open looks from the corner clanked off the rim, as did three pointers from the wing. At the next media timeout, the Bulldogs were in the midst of a 3:34 scoring slump which included five-straight missed shots.

However, this game was about to get out of hand. The Citadel broke the scoring slump, but hitting a stretch of 1-for-11 from the field, combined with the Buckeyes dunking and making threes, pulled the Scarlet and Gray up 40-20 with 3:00 left in the first half.

Ohio State forced four turnovers in the final few minutes, and hit outlet passes for quick points. Kaiden Rice heaved up a corner three to pull within 19. With 29 seconds left, Andrew Dakich was fouled—sending him to the line for a couple free throws. He would connect on both, and OSU went into the intermission with a 44-23 lead.

Even though the Bucks cooled off from the field, they shot just a touch better than their December average. They hit 19-of-32 from the field, good enough for a 59 percent mark. Their counterparts had a vastly different percentage; Citadel connected on just 23 percent, and carried a 5-for-25 mark from the land of three.

Stat wise, the Bulldogs were carried by Tariq Simmons and Rice. Simmons had seven points, while Rice led the team with nine. Outside of those two, only two other Bulldog members scored points. In comparison, OSU had five players break the 7-point mark in the first 20 minutes. Tate and Bates-Diop both had eight points, while Dakich, Williams and Kaleb Wesson had 7-point totals.

Coming back from the break, both teams missed shots and turned the rock over. After a few minutes, though, order was restored on the floor—as shots began to find the bottom of the net. Bates-Diop, for example, knocked down a pair of three-pointers, helping OSU to a 54-31 lead with 16:01 left.

As it seemed like the Bulldogs were about to complete a quality possession (i.e. a highlight reel worthy series of events) the Buckeyes stepped up to deny them. Quayson Williams stole the ball, and passed it to a streaking Rice. Rice had a prime layup opportunity, however, Wesson came flying in behind him and swatted the ball off the rim—crushing The Citadel’s chance of a highlight reel possession.

The first media timeout of the second half arrived not too long after that, and presented a 56-33 lead for the Scarlet and Gray.

Continuing on, the Buckeyes kept the status quo, and held onto a lead of around 20 points as the clock reached the under-10 minute mark for the game. The Citadel still managed to fight for quality looks, but misses led to quick points on the other end. Compounding the issues in the waning portion of the half was when Quayson Williams left the floor after sustaining an apparent leg injury.

By the time the under-8 minute timeout came, the Bulldogs hit a silver-lining mark. They cranked 33 three-point attempts, which was the most the Buckeyes have allowed all season. Unfortunately for them, they only made 10 of those triples. At the same point, Ohio State had 11 three-point makes on 25 attempts.

Turnovers and missed baskets put the visitors in an even deeper hole. After a timeout with 5:08 left in regulation, Ohio State had a commanding 49-88 lead.

With most of the starters on the bench, the Buckeyes still worked the ball inside with success. Kyle Young put home a basket underneath, and powered his way above the Citadel defense.

Since Bates-Diop and the starters sat down, OSU went on five-shot miss streak. On the bright side: Joey Lane came in and knocked down a couple free throws. (He even launched up a three-pointer, much to the delight of the crowd.) Ohio State may have ended the game on a cold streak, but they still picked up the win.

Ohio State is back in action on Dec. 23 against North Carolina. This game is part of the CBS Sports Classic, and will take place from the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. Tipoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. ET with CBS broadcasting the game.

There were 20 Buckeyes on the ballot, accounting for nearly half of the Ohio State alumni in the NFL.

There are only two weeks left in the 2017 NFL regular season, and with the playoff picture getting clearer by the day, the 2018 Pro Bowl rosters were announced Tuesday night. With 20 former Ohio State players making the initial Pro Bowl ballot, five were honored with roster spots in the annual contest.

Joey Bosa was the only former Ohio State player voted to be a starter, with the other four designated as second-team players or alternates. Those alternate roster spots often wind up in a starting role as some players decline the invitation due to an extended postseason run or injuries.

Notably, this would have been the case for Steelers LB (and Buckeye legend) Ryan Shazier, who two weeks ago went down with a serious back injury. In the time since, he’s flown from the hospital in Cincinnati to Pittsburgh, underwent spinal stabilization surgery, and yet was still able to attend — from a suite — last weekend’s Steelers-Patriots matchup. Shazier was on pace for a career-best season in 2017, and being voted to the Pro Bowl is absolutely deserved — it’s just a shame he wont be able to participate.

This year’s Pro Bowl will keep with tradition (despite the few-year hiatus) of an AFC vs. NFC matchup, with each team featuring 44 of the best (or in some case most popular) players from their division. Rosters are filled by consensus voting by fans, players, and coaches throughout the league.

Chargers’ DE Joey Bosa was the only Buckeye to land in the top 20 among fan votes (406,873 votes), and Saints CB Marshon Lattimore is the only Buckeye rookie to make the cut.

Here’s the full list of the Ohio State alumni on the Pro Bowl rosters:

The NFL will host an entire week of activities in the Orlando area leading up to the big game, including the Pro Bowl Skills Challenge and NFL Pro Bowl Experience (a free football festival). The 2018 Pro Bowl game will kick-off on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. ET, and will be televised on ESPN.
