The Buckeyes look to rebound after their first conference loss of the season.

After dropping its first conference game of the season to Penn State, the No.17 Ohio State Buckeyes look to bounce back tonight against Indiana in Columbus in the third iteration of their four-game homestand before heading to West Lafayette, Ind., to face No. 3 Purdue.

The Buckeyes’ loss came in dramatic fashion after the Nittany Lions’ Tony Carr hit a three-pointer as time expired. It was Ohio State’s first loss in more than a month, snapping an eight-game win streak. Junior forward Keita Bates-Diop was questionable heading into the matchup, but played 32 minutes and had a team-high 25 points on the night. Senior forward Jae’Sean Tate added 17 of his own in the loss. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 18-5 on the season, including 9-1 in conference play.

The Hoosiers, meanwhile, are losers of two straight, having dropped their most recent game to third-ranked Purdue 74-67. However, Indiana gave Purdue one of its toughest tests of the season, playing the Boilermakers close well into the second half in a tightly contested match in Assembly Hall. IU is sitting at 12-10 overall, including 5-5 in conference play.

Indiana is in its first season under head coach Archie Miller, previously of Dayton fame and the man who many projected would replace Thad Matta before he accepted the IU role. Miller, like Chris Holtmann, has a lot to live up to as he fills the very large shoes of the departed Tom Crean. Crean was fired after nearly a decade in Bloomington after putting together an 18-16 season last year, which included a 7-11 conference mark.

Also like Holtmann, Miller came to Indiana with the purpose of rebuilding a program that had managed to erode despite past success of its head coach. A winning record overall and an even split in conference play, good for fifth-place in the Big Ten standings, is not terrible for a first-year coach, but certainly pales in comparison to what Holtmann has managed to achieve just a few hours away.

Miller had a lot to build off of heading into this season. While Indiana lost their top scorer from last season in guard James Blackmon, Jr. and center Thomas Bryant to the NBA, they return three starters from last season: Junior forward Juwan Morgan and senior guards Robert Johnson and Justin Newkirk. However, the Hoosiers lost starting sophomore forward De’Ron Davis due to an injury in practice earlier this month.

Ohio State is 77-105 against Indiana all-time. The Buckeyes hold an 811-714 overall record against current teams from the Big Ten. Tonight’s game won’t be the last time Ohio State faces Miller’s squad this season, as the Buckeyes are scheduled to face IU once again in their regular season finale.

Numbers to know

11

The number of days that Ohio State had to play five games. It was a grueling stretch, and there is little doubt that the team as a whole was already exhausted by the time it hit the floor against Penn State. The Nittany Lions, meanwhile, hadn’t played a game since falling to Northwestern on Jan. 20. Penn State did have to turn around, however, and play Rutgers Saturday with just one day of rest. This scheduling is the result of a condensed conference schedule to accommodate an earlier Big Ten Tournament in Madison Square Garden. The Big East Tournament was already scheduled in the same location during the Big Ten Tournament’s normal time, hence the adjustment to the schedule, and also the reasoning behind the Big Ten playing conference games the week after Thanksgiving. While proponents argue that the location helps extend the conference’s geographic footprint, the script of the Big Ten season has been inconsistent scheduling and reduced rest and practice time between games, which has been a reality for all of the teams in the conference. Now, the Buckeyes will have had four full days of rest before taking on Indiana.

5

Ohio State’s points off the bench Thursday against Penn State. Against Nebraska, they had just three, courtesy of Andre Wesson, and there were just eight versus Nebraska. In fact, it was against Northwestern nearly two weeks ago that there was any appreciable production by the bench as it totalled for 22 points, led by Micah Potter’s 13. While starters certainly need to lead in production, and Keita Bates-Diop, C.J. Jackson and Jae’Sean Tate have consistently answered to that calling throughout the season, it also helps to have a player who is able to get hot off the bench. Grad transfer Andrew Dakich has been able to come in and find a rhythm at points throughout the season, as has Potter. With starters playing so many minutes, especially with a compressed schedule, the bench needs to be more reliable to give the front five the relative rest they need to recover for the remainder of conference play.

3

Pretty much everything associated with three-pointers is terrible for Indiana. IU is 13th of 14 teams in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on just 30.5 percent of their shots, and dead last in defending the three, giving up nearly 38 percent of attempts from range. The Hoosiers connect on an average of just six threes per game. Robert Johnson is Indiana’s most consistent threat from range, averaging 1.9 three-pointers per outing. Ohio State is middle of the road when it comes to three-point attempts, and is seventh in the conference in both percentage made (36.3 percent) and defense (34.1 percent). Moreover, Kam Williams is one of the best shooters in the league from range, connecting on 47 percent of attempts. Keita Bates-Diop and C.J. Jackson also bring a strong game from behind the arc, hitting an average of two threes per game.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

Yes, again. The junior forward almost missed the Penn State game due to illness, but wound up leading his team in scoring once again in the Buckeyes’ loss. He still leads the Big Ten in scoring with 19.9 points per game and is third in rebounds, pulling down 8.6 boards per outing. The junior has improved his overall game, especially compared to his last complete season in 2015-16. His two-point, three-point, and free throw shooting percentages have all increased appreciably since 2016. On the other end of the court, Bates-Diop is the best shot blocker on the team (1.7 per game), one of the best defensive rebounders in the conference (7.1 per outing) and the team leader in steals (1.1 per game). He is well on his way to a legitimate shot at being Ohio State’s first Big Ten Player of the Year since Evan Turner in 2010.

Kam Williams

The senior guard has been somewhat in the shadows this season behind the likes of Bates-Diop, Jae’Sean Tate and C.J. Jackson, but that doesn’t make his contribution any less impactful. Williams is, and has always been, a strong three-point shooter, and this season is one of the top shooters from beyond the arc in the Big Ten. In fact, he is fifth in program history in career three-point field goals made with 160. This will be Williams’ 126th outing as a Buckeye. He is on his way to joining the 1,000 point club, having amassed 963 career points. Williams has started 15 of 23 games this season, including every Big Ten game, but has been rather inconsistent in his offensive production. Against Nebraska, he was 0-for-3 from the field and didn’t even have a three-point attempt in 20 minutes on the floor.

Indiana

Robert Johnson

The senior shooting guard has always been a very good player for Indiana but, in many ways like Marc Loving, not quite good enough to satiate his fan base. He started 33 games as a freshman and has continued to be a leader on the Hoosiers as a four-year player. This season, Johnson, a Richmond native, is averaging 14 points per game along with 4.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Against Purdue, the senior had 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting, six rebounds and three assists in 36 minutes of play. He was one of Indiana’s most aggressive defenders against one of the nation’s top shooting teams. Unfortunately for Johnson, two turnovers and two missed field goals in the final minutes against the Boilermakers proved costly mistakes that mirrored Indiana’s inability to close out games this season. While he has been a solid player throughout his career, Johnson has 57 turnovers this season to just 55 assists, and has been prone to making mistakes late in the game.

Juwan Morgan

Despite dropping two of their last three matchups, Morgan has had at least 20 points in each game. Morgan, a junior forward, led the Hoosiers against Purdue with 24 points and seven rebounds on the day as Purdue’s big men seemed unable to match up with him. He even earned the praise of Purdue head coach Matt Painter, who called the junior “a mismatch nightmare.” This surging performance, however, is something new for the third-year player. Last season, Morgan averaged under eight points per game. As a freshman, it was less than three. This year, he has increased his production to a team-high 16.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 60 percent from the field. While Keita Bates-Diop gets (deservedly) much of the credit as the most improved player in the Big Ten this year, Morgan is up there in the impact he has brought to his team, especially in conference play.

Also, the Buckeyes sent out six scholarship offers—and are trying to poach a three-star RB from Oklahoma.

With only eight days remaining until the 2018 National Signing Day, Urban Meyer is leading the charge for the Ohio State football program in an attempt to secure the No. 1 overall rated recruiting class in the country.

While focusing on finishing this year’s class strong, Meyer and the rest of the Ohio State coaching staff is also making sure to not forgot about the following years. Recruiting never ends, and because of that, the best recruiters in the country are always looking ahead.

Ohio State makes late push for Ohio RB

Early Monday morning, Tavion Thomas (Dayton, OH / Dunbar) announced that he was de-committing from the Oklahoma Sooners. The Ohio native committed to the Sooners in June over programs like Ohio State, Alabama, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, USC, LSU and Georgia. Ohio State had been targeting Thomas early in the recruiting cycle, but due to academic problems and limited space in the Buckeyes’ 2018 recruiting class, he fell off the radar.

Fast-forward to Monday and everything has changed. Thomas quietly visited the Ohio State campus this past weekend and it appears that he is almost a sure-lock to commit to the Buckeyes in the coming week.

Hardest decision ever . pic.twitter.com/UsOi3cRTI5

— lackofworries (@tavionthomas937) January 29, 2018

Following Monday’s announcement, it was reported by Rivals.com’s Marc Gilver that Ohio State’s running back coach Tony Alford traveled the short distance to Dayton to check in with Thomas. Thomas is also scheduled to officially visit the program this weekend.

While this was certainly a lot to happen in one day, it is easy to see where the tea leaves are falling. When Ohio State hosts recruits this late in the recruiting process, those recruits typically commit to the program, especially if they are Ohio natives.

If Thomas does commit to Ohio State, he will be the fourth RB to be a member of this year’s recruiting class for the Buckeyes, along with Brian Snead, Master Teague and Jaelen Gill, though Gill projects to have more of an H-back role in college.

With the aforementioned official visit coming this weekend, expect Thomas to wait until signing day to make his announcement.

Buckeyes make the cut for 5-star 2019 WR

Urban Meyer and his coaching staff have developed an incredible knack for noticing elite talent early in the recruiting process, allowing them to gain an edge in winning recruiting battles for some of the top prospects in the country.

Because of this, Ohio State is sitting pretty with one of the top talents in the 2019 recruiting class.

Early Monday afternoon, five-star wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. (Allen, TX / Allen) released his top seven schools and the Buckeyes made the cut.

Top 7....... pic.twitter.com/CPW9OOekmb

— Theo Wease Jr (@_TheoWeaseJr) January 29, 2018

Included alongside the Buckeyes’ in Wease’s list were LSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, TCU, UCLA and USC. He also stated that he will be “shutting down (his) recruiting process” to focus on theses seven schools.

Wease is one of the top talents in the 2019 recruiting class. The 6-foot-3, 194-pound WR holds a reported 37 offers from the best football programs in the country and the 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 28 overall recruit in his class and the No. 6 WR.

With a year left in his recruiting process, Texas A&M is the current favorite to land Wease, however Ohio State is close behind. This coming year will be the first where juniors can make official visits to programs in the spring, and Wease will likely take advantage of the opportunity with a trip to Columbus.

WR will be a big position of need in next year’s class as the Buckeyes could lose the majority of their receivers to the NFL after next season, along with the transfer of former five-star WR Trevon Grimes to Florida.

Ohio State set to receive visit from star 2020 OG Tuesday

As previously mentioned, Ohio State makes it a point to establish relationships with the best prospects in the country early in the recruiting process. The Buckeyes are doing just that with star 2020 offensive guard Justin Rodgers (Oak Park, MI / Oak Park.)

The No. 1 OG in his class, Rodgers announced Monday that he will be visiting the Ohio State campus today.

Coming to the ⭕️ Tuesday

— Justin Rogers (@AllAmerican52JR) January 27, 2018

The visit will be the third in the last five months for the Michigan native, as he is quickly becoming a familiar face in enemy territory. Rodgers first visited Ohio State in July for the programs annual Friday Night Lights camp and left the visit with an official scholarship offer from the program. After that, he was on the sidelines for both the Oklahoma and Penn State games.

Rodgers already holds an impressive 20 offers from some of the top programs in the country including Notre Dame, Florida State, Oregon, Michigan, Michigan State, Maryland and plenty more.

Currently, 100-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions favor Ohio State, and while a lot can happen between now and National Signing Day in 2020, the coaching staff seems to be building an extremely strong relationship with Rogers.

Ohio State dishes out scholarship offers

Following a busy weekend which saw Ohio State offer scholarships to five different recruits, Monday was expected to be slower for the Buckeyes’ coaching staff. This obviously was not the case as the coaching staff offered five more impressive recruits.

LGHL Larry Johnson’s defensive line is NFL caliber from top to bottom

And some of those players don’t get enough credit.

“We put the Ohio State brand on film. We were showing what Coach [Larry] Johnson helped us be and how we developed at Ohio State.”

-Ohio State defensive end Tyquan Lewis, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

Larry Johnson has done a tremendous job in his time in Columbus. The defensive line coach has sent three linemen to the NFL since joining the program in 2014, with several more projected to go in this spring’s draft.

Often discounted among those projected draftees are defensive ends Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes. On a line where Sam Hubbard and Nick Bosa have shined alongside Dre’Mont Jones and Tracy Sprinkle, and where freshman Chase Young and sophomore Robert Landers made impact plays of their own, it is certainly easy to overlook two more outstanding linemen. However, Lewis and Holmes are more than they have been made out to be by draft scouts, as exhibited by their respective performances at the Senior Bowl Saturday. Holmes had two sacks on the day, while Lewis recorded one of his own (he was in on another sack with Oklahoma’s Ogbonnia Okoronkwo), with the pair combining for eight total tackles.

Lewis accrued 23 sacks over his last three years at defensive end for the Buckeyes, while Holmes has earned five in four seasons. While Holmes is critiqued for his lack of production, Lewis is cited for a lack of athleticism. But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Holmes often played out of position on the line, often at defensive tackle or linebacker and thereby limiting production. Lewis, meanwhile, was a workhorse in his time with the Buckeyes and was athletic where it counted (he is sixth all-time in program history in sacks).

The cruel irony is that the true differentiator of the Ohio State defensive line is its depth. While players like Joey Bosa and Hubbard are widely regarded, the likes of Lewis and Holmes are not far behind. Each had games on par with their peers, and should be in contention for an NFL Draft pick come April.

“I understand competition at its deepest level. For me personally, I try to do things that look at every angle of it. I feel like an event like this should be showcased for everyone--their fans, our supporters, and wrestling fans in general.”

-Ohio State wrestling coach Tom Ryan, via Mark Podolski, The News Herald

No. 2 Ohio State is gearing up for the biggest showdown in college wrestling this season as they prepare to take on No. 1 Penn State next week. The dual match, which features 20 wrestlers from 10 weight classes, pits eight former national champions against one another, including two, two-time national champs. However, due to some conference-level scheduling conflicts, few will actually see it live, and the match is gearing up to be highly inaccessible for students. Standing room only tickets are going for $80, while matside tickets will set you back upwards of $500. Capacity for Penn State’s Rec Hall is just 6,502.

Ohio State wrestling coach Tom Ryan is not pleased with the arrangement, stating that he is “disappointed they are not having it in a bigger venue.” By comparison, more than 15,000 people attended Ohio State’s win over then-No. 4 Iowa in Columbus at the Schottenstein Center. Ohio State athletics moved the match from St. John’s Arena, wrestling’s normal home, to accommodate for the increased interest in the match.

Penn State responded that the Big Ten, not the university, was responsible for the scheduling. The Nittany Lions will also be hosting a men’s basketball game Feb. 3 at 6 p.m.--two hours ahead of the start time for the wrestling match--with timing determined by the conference. This scheduling prevents both events from being held in the Bryce Jordan Center, which has a capacity of 15,261.

Setting Ryan off even further is the fact that no student tickets were available for Ohio State fans willing to travel to the match. The Penn State athletic department responded that 75 tickets were made available to the Ohio State team, which the department said is standard for visiting opponents.

Both Penn State and Ohio State enter this dual undefeated and with strong resumes under their respective belts. Despite the capacity and scheduling issues surrounding the day, this match could be a preview of what is to come in March in the NCAA Championships in Cleveland.

“From a leadership standpoint, I just try to do everything right and be an example so far. Stuff hasn’t gotten too crazy yet. But when stuff starts getting crazy, I’m going to have to talk guys through stuff and just try to be that leader and that vocal leader.”

-Ohio State safety Jordan Fuller, via Tim Bielik, Cleveland.com

Junior safety Jordan Fuller has had no shortage of role models in his time at Ohio State. As a freshman, he played behind future first-round pick Malik Hooker and Damon Webb. Last season, Fuller played alongside Webb at safety, having beaten out redshirt senior Erik Smith for the starting spot. It was a big question heading into the 2017 season, given the loss of Hooker to the NFL, but Fuller did not disappoint.

Now, with Webb leaving for the NFL, Fuller is the veteran safety on the team and the leader of the young safety unit. The rest of the roster contains four sophomores and three incoming freshman, including one early enrollee. Isaiah Pryor, a sophomore from Georgia, is currently projected to be Fuller’s counterpart at safety, having played in 12 games last season and making an impact mainly on special teams.

The big stage did not seem to daunt Fuller, who recorded an interception in his first collegiate start against Indiana in the 2017 season opener. He continued to play strong throughout the season, leading Ohio State in solo tackles with 49 on the year, and showed up in big games--like when he tackled Penn State’s Saquon Barkley for a loss late in the comeback win.
