With the loss, the Buckeyes fall under .500 for the first time this season.

In yet another narrow loss, the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team continued its skid, falling 13-10 to No. 5 Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 5-6, including 0-2 in Big Ten play.

Things remained close throughout the first half, with the Blue Jays biggest lead coming in the opening minutes as they pulled ahead 2-0. A goal by freshman midfielder Jackson Reid, on a feed from fellow freshman Justin Inacio, narrowed the gap to just one with 10 minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Another unassisted goal put the Blue Jays back up two, but the Buckeyes closed the first with two straight scores from sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire, assisted by sophomore defenseman Jeff Henrick, and freshman attackman Colby Smith, assisted by Reid on a man-up opportunity.

With the score tied at three-all entering the second, Johns Hopkins pulled ahead with two goals early in the quarter--including one on a man-up opportunity. Not to be outdone, freshman midfielder Omari DeBerry scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from senior midfielder Austin Seiple. DeBerry then returned the favor, feeding to Reid for Reid’s second goal of the day to send the teams to the break tied five-all.

The Buckeyes stayed close through most of the third. After a Blue Jays goal to open the quarter, Seiple found the back of the net himself for his second goal of the season, assisted by freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi. Johns Hopkins bounced back with a goal on a man-up opportunity before tacking on one more score with 6:58 left in the quarter. Less than a minute later, Leclaire scored unassisted to close Hopkins’ lead to one.

Unfortunately, that was when things fell apart for the Buckeyes, as the Blue Jays scored three unanswered goals on a streak that went into the fourth quarter. The four-goal deficit was the greatest that Ohio State faced all day. Finally, junior attackman Jack Jasinski slowed things down with an unassisted goal to put the Buckeyes back in it with 8:30 remaining in regulation. Another goal by Hopkins extended the lead, but a score from sophomore midfielder Ryan Terefenko and one more from Leclaire pulled the game seemingly within reach with 2:23 remaining. However, the Buckeyes couldn’t find the back of the net again, and one last Blue Jays goal proved to be the nail in the coffin for Ohio State.

Leclaire’s three goals led the Buckeyes, with seven players scoring in all. Johns Hopkins held a 35-30 advantage in overall shots on the day, but the Buckeyes outlasted on faceoffs, winning 19-of-27, and collecting 31 ground balls to the Blue Jays’ 26. Sophomore goalie Josh Kirson had six saves for Ohio State, while Hopkins stopped 11.

Next up, the Buckeyes head back to Columbus for a Saturday match against Michigan.

Also, Buckeye men’s lacrosse looks to bounce back from their 0-1 Big Ten start

“I thought somebody was chasing him with a knife or something,” Johnson said. “Yeah, I heard he was fast, but then I actually went and watched him.”

-Ohio State secondary coach Taver Johnson, via Austin Ward, Land of 10

It’s not really surprising to hear a football player is fast, but the visual you get from Taver Johnson’s quote in Ward’s article is certainly something. So, who is this player with outstanding speed? Cornerback Kendall Sheffield.

The junior spent his offseason competing for the men’s track & field team, and not only had a solid season on the way to a team Big Ten Championship, but also set a new school record for the 60-yard dash, at 6.63 seconds — besting a record that stood for 23 years. Despite training for track being a completely different monster than prepping for football, the dual-effort has already seemed to impress during spring practices, where he’s back in the cornerback room and making receivers pay.

“I definitely think he’s able to show how much of a freak athlete he is with the track times and then coming back and having a really good performance this spring,” fellow cornerback Jeffrey Okudah said, according to Ward’s article. “He’s had about 10 forced fumbles. When the receivers see him coming around, they all brace for impact.”

Sheffield seems like he’s always been a Buckeye, but he didn’t get to Columbus until after a short stint at Alabama and then a stop at the JUCO level. He took a bit to get into a rhythm during the 2017 season — his first as a Buckeye — but he could end up being the next Ohio State DB taken in the first round of the NFL Draft, if this spring is any indication of what he’ll bring to the field this fall.

“After Saturday’s result, the Buckeyes (5-5, 0-1 Big Ten) will look to put an end to their losing streak of four games and must now make their way to Baltimore to confront No. 5 Johns Hopkins (7-2, 1-0 Big Ten).”

-Joe Thompson, The Lantern

Ohio State men’s lacrosse opened Big Ten play last weekend against Penn State, and lost in an astounding 12-4 defeat. The Buckeyes are hoping to have more success Saturday against John’s Hopkins, when the team hits the road for their first Big Ten away game of the year.

After starting the season 5-4 in non-conference play, the Buckeyes need to bounce back quickly if they plan on making a run in the conference or to even get into the postseason. It’ll be a tough matchup for the Buckeyes, but if they are able to best the Blue Jays, the team should have a good amount of confidence and momentum to continue their conference run.

“I think we’ve always matched up well with Hopkins. We’ve always given each other trouble, I’d say,” redshirt senior midfielder John Kelly said, according to Thompson’s article in The Lantern. “I feel good about how we match up with them this year and we’re going to have to sit down and play good defense. We’re going to have to make sure we control the ball on offense, take good opportunities — not just any opportunities we see.”

Kelly also noted that the team would need to play tougher than they had been, and more specifically to give every play their total effort — a tough lesson learned in the eight-goal beating by the Nittany Lions. It certainly won’t be an easy win, but it’s a very important one as Ohio State gets into the meat of their schedule.

Ohio State vs. John’s Hopkins will get underway on Saturday, April 7 at Noon ET on ESPNU.

“Coming off a pair of Big Ten victories last weekend, No. 23/24 Ohio State is back on the road to face Rutgers in a three-game series at the RU Softball Complex...”

-Ohio State Athletics

After spending most of the early part of the season on the road, the Buckeyes are away from home again after claiming their first Big Ten series of the season last weekend against Wisconsin. The softball team has so far struggled in conference play, sitting at 2-4 as they get ready to face Rutgers, but continue to inch up the national rankings with their 21-8 overall record.

Ohio State is 11-1 all-time against Rutgers, and last season in particular really demolished the Scarlet Knights. Not only did the Buckeyes claim all three wins of the series, but each game was also called by run-rule — Ohio State outscored Rutgers, 32-3. (Yikes.) The Scarlet Knights haven’t quite elevated their game that much since last season, and currently hold a 17-16 record (2-2 in Big Ten play), but they did claim their series over Penn State last weekend, 2-1.

On the season, the Scarlet Knights are hitting .256 with 20 home runs and 25 doubles. The lead batter for Rutgers is Rebecca Hall, who currently holds a .385 batting average, along with 45 hits, 32 RBIs, 23 runs and six home runs. By comparison, the Buckeyes have a clear offensive advantage, ranking No. 2 in the Big Ten in home runs (33), No. 3 in earned run average (2.40), and No. 4 in slugging percentage (.446).

The Buckeyes shouldn’t have too much trouble coming out of this weekend’s slate of games 3-0 against the Scarlet Knights, but they’ll face Penn State shortly thereafter (Wednesday, April 11) which could be a bit more challenging.

“It’s not floating,” Schiano said with a smile. “That just kind of sounds like you just walk around. … I can go help whatever position is needed. I’m kind of the roamer. Whatever is needed, I’m kind of the spare.”

-Ohio State DC Greg Schiano, via Austin Ward, Land of 10

Things have been anything but quiet for Greg Schiano since the end of the 2017 season. From taking (then losing) a new head coaching gig, to passing on another shot on an NFL coaching staff, nothing really panned out and — thankfully for the Buckeyes — Schiano is staying in Columbus at least through 2018.

Players have listed a host of different benefits to working with Schiano, be it having a better understanding of what it takes to transition to the NFL, or adopting a better tackling technique. But another perk to Schiano being on staff is his versatility in being able to jump into different position group drills and help where he can.

“There are always repercussions that you don’t see, and the other thing it allows me to do is I get to jump around from meeting room to meeting room. I like to be able to see everything.”

As Ward notes in his article, the former NFL head coach didn’t want to be called a “floater” with the implication being that he’s just wandering around the facility, but rather be known as the “roamer”. Not that the title matters in any capacity, but Schiano being able to fill in certain pieces throughout Ohio State’s defense is one of the reasons that he was so highly coveted following last season — and why he’ll be another hot commodity on the coaching carousel next offseason.

See what the South Carolina native has to say about the Buckeyes, and much more.

Just a few months removed from signing one of the top overall 2018 classes in the country, and well on their way to doing the same in 2019, Urban Meyer and crew are still finding time to keep their eyes on some of the most talented prospects the class of 2020 has to offer.

Playing host to many highly sought after sophomore prospects on campus this spring, one of the recruits to grace the Ohio State Buckeyes with his presence was four-star defensive tackle Alex Huntley.

“The OSU visit was awesome. I saw practice, got to meet some coaches, toured the school, stadium and did the photo shoot. What really stood out was the traditions and history at OSU. It’s really special. Also meeting coach Meyer and coach Johnson was was huge. I really like Coach Johnson and think there’s so much I can learn from him,” said the 6-foot-4, 295-pound standout from Columbia, South Carolina to Land-Grant Holy Land soon after ending his trip to Columbus earlier this week.

Had an amazing time at Ohio State Thanks for an awesome visit @markpantoni @R2X_Rushmen1 @OhioStateFB @OSUCoachMeyer pic.twitter.com/R50gTQfrVD

— Alex Huntley (@alexhuntley_) April 4, 2018

Having a chance to sit down and talk with coach Meyer and Johnson, Huntley walked away from the Ohio State campus highly impressed with what the staff had to say about his potential to be a leader on the defensive front for the Buckeyes.

“Coach Johnson said he likes the havoc I wreak up front and sees me as a 3Tech. He knows so much about defense and I know I would learn a lot and grow tremendously as a player under him. Of course meeting Coach Meyer was incredible. He’s a legend. I’m coming back in the summer for camp and will be able to put some work in with Coach Johnson.”

Currently holding scholarships from the likes of South Carolina, Arkansas, Georgia, Georgia State and Michigan, Huntley has yet to earn a chance to suit up for Ohio State, but holds the Buckeyes in very high regards when it comes to his recruitment.

“When I think of Ohio State, I think of tradition, honor and quality,” said Huntley. “They’re a powerhouse. Also now I think about the rivalry with the “team up north”. OSU is definitely up there on my list for sure.”

Ohio State isn’t the only program sticking out for the Hammond School sophomore standout. His hometown Gamecocks, and Bulldogs of Georgia also have Huntley’s attention before he heads out on the camp circuit to impress other top notch schools with his talents.

“South Carolina stands out. Coach Muschamp is great and he and coach Thompson know so much about a strong defense. They’ve really made me feel like if I work hard, I’d have a chance to play early. Georgia is also standing out and I really respect Coach Scott and the Georgia d-line. Georgia is also a camp I will attend this Summer. I’m going to check out a few other schools over the summer.”

Summer camps aren’t the only thing on his mind. While he still has quite a bit of time before he signs on the dotted line, Alex is also starting to give thought into what he’s looking for in program on and off the football field.

“Some of the things that are important to me are the relationships with the coaches and teammates, the facilities and fan base. I’m not sure about a major yet but I’m interested in economics and maybe sports management.”

A stud on the line for Hammond all season long, Huntley, the fourth defensive tackle and 100th overall prospect in the class of 2020, per 247Sports, finished his sophomore campaign for the SkyHawks with over 60 total tackles, and seven quarterback sacks to help pace his squad to an undefeated 12-0 season, and a SCISA Class 3A championship title.

Will Huntley end up lining up for the Buckeyes in the future? Only time will tell, but from the sound of things he should definitely be one class of 2020 prospect all Buckeye fans should keep an eye on going forward.

Is the tide turning in the Buckeyes’ direction?

When Urban Meyer was hired as the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2012, he was very open about the fact that not only would his new team need to compete with the likes of Penn State, Wisconsin, and The Team Up North, but they would also need to take on the biggest dog in the college football yard, the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Since then, Meyer’s Buckeyes have become one of the dominant forces in the country, but in many ways are still nipping at ‘Bama’s heels. While OSU won the inaugural College Football Playoff— beating the Tide in the semifinals— Nick Saban and company have won two of the three titles since.

That being typed, this past February, the Buckeyes bested the Tide in the composite recruiting rankings for the first time in Meyer’s tenure, and now, thanks to a tip from Ohio State’s Sports Information Director, there is another feather for the Buckeyes to stick in the cap of this intra-conference rivalry.

Ohio State has the best conference record of any team in the nation over the last six years:

Best Conference Records – 2012-17
1. 47-3 - Ohio State
2. 43-5 - Alabama
3. 42-6 - Clemson
4. 45-9 - Oklahoma
5. 39-11 - Wisconsin

— Jerry Emig (@BuckeyeNotes) April 6, 2018

Meyer’s Buckeyes have the best conference record of any team in in the country during his time leading the Buckeyes. Saban’s Crimson Tide come in second, followed by Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.

In the six seasons that Meyer has been at the helm in Columbus, he has a 73-8 overall record, including a 47-3 mark in the Big Ten Conference. His three B1G losses came to No. 9 Michigan State in 2015, Penn State in 2016, and Iowa last year. In his first three years back at Ohio State, Meyer did not lose in conference, and his teams have claimed at least a share of their division title every year he’s been on the job. (RIP Leaders Division.)

Saban, however, has only had one undefeated conference season since 2012— the Tide went 8-0 in the SEC in 2016. Now, I know that some of you will argue that the Southeastern Conference is a better league than the B1G, and that might well be the case, at least over the past decade or so. But, in recent years, the Big Ten has been just as good, if not better than, any conference in the country at the top and in terms of depth; a fact that is due in no small part to Meyer’s arrival in Columbus.

So, between the recent head-to-head recruiting victory, and this impressive conference mark, could the tide be turning in OSU’s favor? We’ll find out when the teams get back on the gridiron this September.

It's another award for the Buckeye legend.

Despite ending her Ohio State career just shy of an NCAA Tournament Championship game, Kelsey Mitchell will still go down as a Buckeye, Big Ten, and overall collegiate basketball legend. Her trophy case is already getting pretty full, but Mitchell will add at least one more as the winner of the 2018 Dawn Staley Award.

The Dawn Staley Award is given to the most outstanding collegiate guard in college basketball, and exemplifies certain skills, like ball handling, scoring and distributing the ball to teammates. Mitchell certainly fits all those requirements, and then some, including her career-high 148 assists this season, adding to an already insane stat sheet.

In addition to her penchant for getting her teammates plenty of touches, the four-time All-American also finished the year ranked third in the NCAA in scoring (24.3 ppg), shot 44.8 percent from the floor, 40.2 percent from the arc, and had a career-low in turnovers (78) during her senior season. Her effort wasn’t overlooked either, as she was named the Big Ten’s Player of the Year for her third time.

Mitchell is the kind of player you wish would never leave Ohio State, but she’s stayed as long as she could -- and we should all be honored she did. She’s set all sorts of new benchmarks for elite basketball players throughout the Big Ten conference and NCAA — for both men’s and women’s basketball — including finishing her career as the NCAA’s second all-time leading scorer with 3,402 career points. Combined, Mitchell owns 30 school, conference, and national records, and among only three other players to exceed 3,000 points and 500 assists.

(Please don’t go, Kelsey. Please don’t go.)

Based on spring practice, is Ohio State’s defense more talented than the offense?
Chad Peltier

Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

usa_today_10309719.0.jpg

The defense has reportedly gotten the better of the offense early in spring practice. Is this due to better average talent levels?

According to Urban Meyer (via Cleveland.com), “I think the defense is way ahead of the offense... There are so many strengths on defense right now. Offensively you’re trying to find the right five up front, and that’s hard with Michael Jordan who is not practicing.” In the last scrimmage of spring practice, the offense didn’t feature any champion disignations, while Urban Meyer rattled off a number of champion defensive players.

But how much of that imbalance is due to a new quarterback and offensive linemen, and how much of the defense’s superiority is based on an overall higher talent level?

I dug into the last four recruiting classes on 247Sports to see.

Based solely on the overall offensive and defensive players, the last four recruiting classes have been astonishingly similar talent-wise. Both average roughly .93 in the 247 Composite.

Further, while all of the last four classes have been great, the last two classes saw a noticeable rise in average talent ratings. On offense, the 2015 and 2016 classes averaged a solid .919, but in 2017 and 2018 they averaged .945. On defense, the first two classes averaged .914, but rose to .948 during the last two classes.

This table organizes the annual average recruiting ratings by position in ascending order -- so tight ends and defensive backs have had the lowest four-year average ratings, while H-backs and running backs have had the highest ratings.

Not only does this show overall recruiting and talent strengths and weaknesses, but it also shows which positions are prioritized by the offensive and defensive staffs, as well as which positions can accept more developmental players (which lower the positional averages).

For example, the staff generally only takes a few total running backs and H-backs in any recruiting class, so they have to be top-notch recruits. There’s much less room scholarship-wise for developmental players for only two starting spots. In contrast, the team takes a large number of defensive backs and offensive linemen in every class (an average of 5 DBs and 4.5 offensive linemen), so the team can get top-end players and also accept commitments from lower-rated developmental players (for instance, Jahsen Wint, Rodjay Burns, Damon Arnette, Josh Alabi, and Branden Bowen are all ten of the lowest-rated recruits in the last four classes).

Another interesting note — maybe the most improved position group, at least talent-wise, is on offensive line. The defensive line actually improved significantly as well.

While it’s hardly definitive, it’s interesting that the defensive line and linebackers are the third- and fourth-most talented position groups, which could explain some of the defense’s dominance in spring practice. Even though running backs and H-backs may be more talented overall, those are still just two of the players on the offense, while the defensive line and linebackers include six or seven starters.

Finally, if you only look at Ohio State’s top ten overall recruits in the last four classes, you can see just how well-represented the defense is. Eight of the top 10 overall recruits are defenders, with just Wyatt Davis and Nicholas Petit-Frere, offensive linemen from the last two classes, as the only offensive players in the top 10.

What’s crazy is that nearly all of these players haven’t had a chance to make an impact on the field yet. Eight of those top 10 are from the last two recruiting classes, leaving just Nick Bosa and Justin Hilliard from the 2015 and 2016 classes. Bosa is the only returning starter in the top 10 talent-wise.
