Ohio State has landed their best recruit in years.

To say it was a great day for Ohio State basketball would be a pretty massive understatement. For the first time since 2014, Ohio State has landed a five-star prospect, and for the first time since 2010, that five-star hails from the Buckeye State. Garfield Heights star Alonzo Gaffney is Ohio State’s next star, and another massive win for a coaching staff rapidly picking up Ws.

Gaffney, a 6’9, 190 pound power forward is ranked as the 18th best player in the country for 2019, the third best power forward, and the best player in Ohio, and while the rankings are great, he’s even better than they say. Gaffney is Ohio State’s highest ranked commit since D’Angelo Russell, and when you look at his film, it’s easy to see why.

It’s not bold at all to say that Gaffney will have just as big of an impact as a freshman as star rookies like Russell or Jared Sullinger, in fact, it may be fair to assume that he could be even better. Let’s take a look at why that is, and what he brings to Columbus.

On the court

The first thing that shows up on Gaffney’s film is just how long he is. He’s a legitimate 6-foot-9, and may be closer to 6-foot-10; and, with a wingspan easily longer than 7 feet, he’ll be one of the biggest players in the Big Ten as soon as he steps on campus. Gaffney certainly doesn’t just thrive because of his size however, and he has learned how to use his length as a bonus, rather than as his whole game.

That size is extremely beneficial to him defensively, where he spends entire games terrorizing opponents inside. When he’s on the floor, there are absolutely no easy layups, and while he isn’t a great perimeter defender, he’s as skilled of a shot-blocker as anyone in the class of 2019.

While his defense is solid, if not a bit one-dimensional, his offense is where Gaffney really shines. There’s not a shot past half court that Alonzo doesn’t like, and more often than not, he’ll knock those shots down. He’s great at getting to the hoop because of his solid dribbling and fantastic athleticism, and will almost never struggle to finish at the basket.

Shockingly enough, finishing at the hoop may not even be his best offensive asset by the time he’s done in Columbus. Gaffney has a beautiful shooting stroke from outside, and when he’s shooting with confidence, he’s extremely capable of being a sharpshooter. He’ll have to work through inconsistency issues shooting the ball, as many freshmen do, but when he’s on, he’s just as good at shooting as another former Buckeye wing: Keita Bates-Diop.

Gaffney has said that a big reason for his decision was the job that Chris Holtmann and his staff did in developing KBD, and if Gaffney becomes a more athletic version of the Big Ten Player of the Year, you won’t find an upset Buckeye fan in the country.

On the roster

Gaffney’s presence in 2019 will give Ohio State a ton of flexibility. Barring any unforeseen changes, Ohio State should have CJ Walker, Luther Muhammad, Justin Ahrens, Alonzo Gaffney, Kaleb Wesson, Andre Wesson, Musa Jallow, Kyle Young, Duane Washington, Jaedon Ledee, and Micah Potter all ready to play, along with at least one or two more 2019 recruits.

It’s not hard to envision a team with that much talent contending for a national title, especially if the classes of 2017 and 2018 can develop during the 2018-19 season, which many see as a rebuilding year. If that happens, and the Buckeyes come into the 2019 season fully loaded, the addition of Gaffney allows the coaching staff to deploy numerous situational lineups. Let’s take a look at what those could look like.

Starters: CJ Walker, Luther Muhammad, Musa Jallow, Alonzo Gaffney, Kaleb Wesson

I don’t expect to see Kaleb Wesson and Alonzo Gaffney of the floor together very often. That much size in the front court would be balanced out by a fairly small backcourt, but ultimately, Wesson’s inside the paint, interior-centered game takes away spacing from Gaffney that he needs to get to the hoop. This is probably the most talented lineup, but I don’t expect to see it a ton.

Small Ball: Duane Washington, Musa Jallow, Luther Muhammad, Jaedon LeDee, Alonzo Gaffney

Gaffney and LeDee are good enough interior defenders and and rebounders for this small lineup to work, specifically when Ohio State is looking to spread the floor. Good shooters in the backcourt make for a very dangerous group that could create comebacks.

Defense: Luther Muhammad, Musa Jallow, Andre Wesson, Jaedon LeDee, Alonzo Gaffney

Another smaller lineup, but this group has a ton of athleticism, length, and defensive ability. Three great wing defenders, a dominant inside presence, and a lockdown guard defender in Muhammad makes this a great lineup against dangerous offenses.

Shooting: Duane Washington, Luther Muhammad, Justin Ahrens, Alonzo Gaffney, Micah Potter

All five players on the floor can shoot the ball from outside, and while they may struggle on defense, it’s almost impossible to guard five great shooters like this.

Bully ball: Luther Muhhamad, Andre Wesson, Alonzo Gaffney, Kyle Young, Kaleb Wesson

Not very practical, but against a team without much shooting, but a ton of size (think Kentucky 2017), this lineup can do some serious damage inside. All five players are very capable at getting to the hoop and playing physically, and could serve as a steadying force if the outside shots aren’t falling.

With all of these possibilities, and many more, it’s hard to not be excited about what Ohio State will look like in 2019. No matter what Chris Holtmann and his staff decide to do, now is the time to jump on the Buckeye bandwagon, because it’s about to leave the station.

Iowa Series @ Iowa City, IA

6 unearned runs in the two losses. 46 unearned runs in 30 games. Too many freebies to trust these guys to win many close games. It’s not just errors...HBP and WP have been costly as well in tight games. Add in the fact that we K so much it doesn’t put much pressure on opposing defenses and you’ve got a team that really needs to hit to win. Hopefully things can turn around but I’ve been telling myself that for years.
All about discipline. FIRE BEALS!!!

Why is Johnathan Hankins still a free agent?

usa_today_10414706.0.jpg

The Buckeye DT is still young enough to garner a long-term deal. But will he get the kind of money he thinks he deserves?

In 2016, former Ohio State DT Johnathan Hankins was one-half of the NFL’s fiercest interior lineman duos, alongside Damon Harrison. With the New York Giants — the team that drafted Hankins in 2013 — having already opened their wallets to retain Harrison in 2016, the team had to choose between a big-money deal for Jason Pierre-Paul or Hankins. They chose JPP, and Hankins was on his way out in early-2017.

Every year, there are a handful of storylines and players that make up most of the free agency frenzy, and following the 2016 season, Hankins was that guy. A top defensive tackle, and young enough to still garner a big-money, long-term deal, he ended up signing with the Indianapolis Colts on a three-year contract, worth $27 million. Hankins had a decent first season in Indy, notching 44 total tackles and 2.0 sacks in his 15 games played.

The team surprisingly released the Buckeye during free agency in 2018, after playing just one year on his new deal. With a new head coach taking over the team, and a new defensive scheme being implemented, Hankins was no longer the hot commodity that he was just a year prior. Since his release, Hankins hasn’t really drummed up the same kind of interest that he did during last year’s offseason.

Why isn’t Hankins as highly sought after in 2018?

Part of the concern with signing Hankins last offseason was his price tag. Originally asking for more than $10 million per year, the DT settled for just shy of that when he signed with the Colts. Just a year later, his asking price is just a little lower, around $8 million per season. That’s still a hefty cost for someone who finished the 2015 season on IR and has battled injuries throughout his career.

Since his release, he’s taken a visit with the New York Jets, but some argue that isn’t a good scheme fit for Hankins and isn’t a likely destination for the Buckeye. Some teams that would provide a better schematic landing have already brought in guys, lessening their need for a big-money player — like the Tennessee Titans, who signed Bennie Logan on Monday.

The Colts certainly didn’t do Hankins any favors either, releasing him a couple days after the opening of free agency. Teams didn’t know he’d be available and some had already moved forward with signing other high-demand players. Once cap space becomes a concern, teams start tightening their wallets, meaning a tougher time for Hankins as he looks for a new roster spot.

The Buckeye has met with Washington as well, but is rumored to want a multi-year deal, which the NFC East team may not be willing to offer. There’s also been some buzz that the Detroit Lions could be an interesting landing spot for the lineman.

The Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team just received the biggest commitment of the young Chris Holtmann-era, as Ohio’s top-rated player Alonzo Gaffney has officially decided to stay in-state for his collegiate career.

— (@alonzo_gaffney) April 10, 2018

The physically imposing 6’9 power forward is currently wrapping up his junior year at Cleveland’s Garfield Heights High School. 247 Sports has him as the 18th best player in the 2019 class, and the third-best power forward nationally.

Before choosing to stay at home with the Buckeyes, he had offers from Michigan State, North Carolina, Louisville, Georgetown, Kansas, and many others.

Gaffney is a long wing, with a fantastic ability to get to the rim and score. His size also allows him to be a lockdown defender, making him a valuable addition to the roster on both ends of the floor.

Weighing in at just 190 pounds, he has some room to bulk up, and he will want to continue working on his outside shot in order to round out his game, but this is a major addition to the OSU program.

With the recent commitment of Florida State transfer, CJ Walker, Holtmann is well on his way to remaking the Ohio State roster to fit his vision of the program.

The Buckeyes once again opened the week hosting multiple recruits on campus—and one walked away with a scholarship offer.

Ohio State offers blue-chip 2020 TE

The Ohio State Buckeyes football team is gearing up for the biggest week of the Spring season with the annual Scarlet and Grey game set to take place this Saturday. The game will take place Saturday at noon and—just like in years past—a hefty list of recruits are scheduled to attend the game.

However, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes’ coaching staff aren’t waiting until Saturday to get recruits on campus. Like seemingly every week this spring, Ohio State has hosted multiple recruits during practices and Monday was no different.

One of the recruits to attend practice yesterday was 2020 tight end recruit Michael Mayer (Alexandria, KY / Covington Catholic) who ended his visit receiving that coveted Ohio State scholarship offer.

Very excited and grateful to say I have received an offer from THE Ohio State University!‼️ ‼️ #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/RrKxOdwIV3

— Michael Mayer (@MMayer1001) April 9, 2018

The four-star TE has received plenty of attention from elite level college football programs already in his recruitment despite only having two seasons of high school football under his belt. Following the Ohio State offer on Monday, Mayer now has 12 scholarship offers from schools like Notre Dame, Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Louisville, Michigan, Penn State, Purdue and Cincinnati.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Mayer is viewed as the No. 5 TE in his class by 247Sports and is the No. 226 prospect overall.

Ohio State makes the cut for 4-star ATH

Four-star athlete Ronnie Hickman (Wayne, NJ / DePaul Catholic) holds a reported 19 scholarship offers, but he announced a top group of Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Notre Dame, Florida and Virginia Tech via his Twitter account Monday night.

Extremely Blessed and Thankful #TopSix pic.twitter.com/pe1a2C4V4p

— Ronnie Hickman (@asvprocket_) April 10, 2018

Hickman is the No. 13 ATH in the 2019 recruiting class and is the No. 122 overall recruit in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is also the No. 2 recruit from the state of New Jersey.

Standing at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, Hickman plays both wide receiver and safety for DePaul Catholic. It is uncertain as to which position Ohio State is looking at him for, given that both Urban Meyer and Greg Schiano are both heavily involved in his recruitment. It is probably safe to assume they are looking at him to play defense.

Hickman last visited Ohio State in February but now that he has narrowed down his list of schools to six, expect him to begin scheduling official visits starting as early as this spring.

Currently, Ohio State hold 100-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions but both Rutgers and Penn State are thought to be gaining ground.

4-star Safety reps Ohio State

Ohio State has made four-star safety prospect Nick Cross (Hyattsville, MD / DeMatha Catholic) a priority this recruiting cycle and it appears the dedication is paying off.

Cross was one of a few prospects with an Ohio State offer to be invited to The Opening Finals after an impressive showing in the New Jersey regional camp on Sunday. But outside of his talent and instincts on the gridiron, what stood out most about his performance was his Ohio State Block “O” gloves.

#GOTOPEN✅ All Glory to God DM✈️Dallas. pic.twitter.com/ovgQmCnpsA

— Nick Cross (@Nick_Cross26) April 9, 2018

The 6-foot-1, 207-pound Cross is viewed as the No. 10 safety by the 247Sports Composite Rankings and is the No. 184 overall prospect in his class. However, if he continues to dominate his competition at national recruiting camps, those numbers could climb even higher.

Luke Stampini of 247Sports, attended the weekend’s event and listed Cross as the ‘alpha dog.’ According to Stampini, Cross recorded an insane 40-yard dash time of under 4.50 seconds and outshined all the other participants in one-on-one’s.

When speaking on Cross’ level of play, Stampini said, ‘‘The movement skills that Cross possesses helps in man coverage and the ability to make plays along the sideline when lining up as a free safety. From start to finish, Cross was the camp’s top overall performer.”

While Ohio State has to like where it stands in his recruitment, they aren’t the lone contender. Cross holds more than 30 offers from programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State, Michigan and Michigan State

Helping in Ohio State’s efforts to pursue Cross is his relationship with his former teammate and current Buckeye defensive end Chase Young. If Ohio State is able to get Cross to commit, who reportedly wants to come to a decision before the start of his senior season, the DeMatha Catholic pipeline will be one of Ohio State’s strongest.

Need more proof that Cross is having one of the best offseasons in the 2019 recruiting class? He was also offered a chance to partake in this year’s U.S. Army All-American Game.

Look for the Buckeyes to zone in on four-star QB Grant Gunnell to close out the 2019 cycle.

No one knows what the cornerback is actually capable of.

“I think it’ll definitely give me confidence. You can go out there and play knowing your body feels good. I’m really interested to see how everything will pan out.”

-Ohio State cornerback Jeffrey Okudah, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

One of five, five-star recruits in the 2017 class at Ohio State, expectations were already high coming in for cornerback Jeffrey Okudah. Somehow, he managed to meet them and raise the bar even further for 2018. As a true freshman, he played in nine games for the Buckeyes, accumulating 17 tackles on the season. While the overall numbers aren’t extraordinary, consider that, by the end of the season, he played more snaps than starter Damon Arnette in the Cotton Bowl.

His breakout game came late in the regular season as Ohio State faced Illinois, when Okudah recorded four tackles in the Buckeyes’ blowout win. In the Cotton Bowl, he added four more solo tackles. Widely regarded as one of the most impressive newcomers on the team, players and coaches alike praised the freshman for his on-field contributions, which were impressive for a freshman who was learning a new system while getting up to speed on the college game.

However, what players and coaches saw last season could be just a fraction of what Okudah is capable of. Somehow, the cornerback managed to play two full seasons of high school football--seasons which earned him his five-star recruiting ranking and status as the nation’s top cornerback--as well as his freshman season in Columbus with a labrum injury. While it was a minor enough injury that Okudah was able to play through it, the Buckeyes decided that offseason surgery was the best option for their future star corner. Come September, Taver Johnson, who replaced Kerry Coombs as cornerbacks coach, plans on rotating a healthy Okudah with Arnette and Kendall Sheffield to keep his secondary fresh.

Though Okudah is sitting out spring practice, the high expectations that he has faced in his year in Columbus continue to increase. Now, however, he will be fully healthy as he takes them on.

“With Mitchell’s incredible three-point range (she shoots 40 percent from the field on nine attempts per game), handles and court awareness, she seems too good to pass up here.”

-Matt Ellentuck and Whitney Medworth, SBNation

With the WNBA Draft scheduled for this Thursday in New York City, all eyes are on the No. 2 overall pick. There is little doubt that the Las Vegas Aces, formerly the San Antonio Stars, will select South Carolina center/forward A’ja Wilson. Standing at 6-foot-5, Wilson will likely join last season’s No. 1 overall selection in Kelsey Plum, who was selected by the Stars in the 2017 draft. However, the drama will come with the second pick, held by the Indiana Fever. Most analysts figured that former Ohio State point guard Chelsea Mitchell was a lock on the spot--that is, until UConn’s Azura Stevens opted to forego her final season of eligibility with the Huskies and enter the draft. The 6-foot-6 forward transferred to UConn from Duke, playing just one season under Geno Auriemma.

Mitchell is still seen by many as the obvious choice. In four seasons in Columbus, she became one of the most highly-decorated Buckeyes in program history. She was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in each of her four years playing, as well as a three-time Big Ten Player of the Year. She holds 17 program records at Ohio State, eight conference records and four NCAA records, including most career three-point field goals (497). As a senior, she led the country in total points scored with 849, and ended her final season ranked second nationally in career points.

From the Fever’s perspective, Mitchell checks a lot of boxes for a team which has a lot of needs this offseason. Indiana traded away Briann January, considered the team’s best player, just a year after Tamika Catchings, who had been the Fever’s leading scorer, retired. Indiana also holds the No. 8 pick in the draft as a result of the January trade, with analysts projecting a selection of forward Monique Billings from UCLA. At forward, Billings could help to give the Fever the best of both worlds if they also nab Mitchell, but the appeal of a former UConn and Duke star certainly boosts the intrigue of how the first round will play out Thursday.

“As for how he fits into Ohio State’s plans moving forward, Walker will likely step in as the starting point guard in 2019-2020 with two years of eligibility remaining.”

-James Grega, Eleven Warriors

Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann managed to do a lot with a little in his first season at the helm in Columbus. After a good portion of his roster transferred in the transition surrounding Thad Matta’s departure, Holtmann leveraged a corps of veteran talent, along with a few crucial newcomers, to put together an unexpected NCAA Tournament run. However, Holtmann is steadily building his own recruitment machine that will help to “reload” his team in the future, especially with losses like forwards Keita Bates-Diop and Jae’Sean Tate. Though many of the benefits of this pipeline won’t be seen for years to come, the head coach is setting Ohio State basketball up for long-term success.

One of these pieces is Florida State transfer C.J. Walker, who could ultimately fill the true point guard spot which has been lacking in recent seasons at Ohio State. Walker won’t be eligible until the 2019-2020 season, but he will bring a level of veteran experience to a team which will feature many young players. Moreover, Walker was part of an Elite Eight team this season, and brings knowledge of what it is like to have a run in the NCAA Tournament. Walker, who averaged eight points per game as a sophomore with the Seminoles, has shown improvement in his game from year one to year two. His free throw shooting improved markedly, jumping to 73.2 percent from just 65.5 a year before, and bettered his defense on the other side of the court.

The transfer provides a good start to Holtmann’s 2019 recruiting class. Coincidentally, Walker, a former four-star recruit, was initially wooed by Holtmann while the latter was still at Butler. The incoming 2018 group is currently ranked No. 23 nationally, featuring two four-star recruits. By the time Walker sees the court, just two former Matta players--Andre Wesson and Micah Potter--will still be on the roster, and Walker will play a crucial veteran role on an overall young team.
