LGHL 3 Buckeyes among Bleacher Report’s top 25 NFL prospects for 2019

3 Buckeyes among Bleacher Report’s top 25 NFL prospects for 2019

The No. 1 name isn’t really all that surprising.

The 2018 NFL Draft already feels like months ago, but even just two weeks later, analysts and scouts are already turning their attention on the next group of guys to make the jump to the pros. Draft insider Matt Miller of Bleacher Report, already put out his 2019 big board, and three Buckeyes were named among the top 25 overall NFL prospects—with three more named among the top 10 at their positions.

Miller’s list of Buckeyes included: Nick Bosa (No. 1 overall), Dre’Mont Jones (No. 16 overall), Kendall Sheffield (No. 18 overall), Mike Weber (No. 7 among RBs), Isaiah Prince (No. 10 among OTs), and Michael Jordan (No. 9 among OGs).

Sure, it’s way too early to start thinking about the No. 1 overall draft pick in next year’s event, but it seems pretty unanimous that Nick Bosa is going to be a priority for several teams. The legacy Buckeye has a chance to not only equal his brother’s accomplishments in college and during his transition to the pros, but to ultimately best Joey’s collegiate production and be a higher draft pick is definitely in the realm of possibilities.

Bosa being atop Miller’s big board for next year isn’t really that surprising — just as it won’t be that surprising when Mike Mayock, ESPN, et al put out their big boards with the Bosa brother at No. 1. He was long considered to be a more natural talent than his brother Joey, even during his recruitment to Ohio State, and despite being among a pretty deep D-line rotation, has done enough to be the real standout among the group.

Since getting to Columbus in 2016—just months after Joey left, ruining my dream of calling them the `Bosa Bash Brothers`—the younger brother of the DE phenom got straight to work. In his two seasons at Ohio State, Nick has amassed 63 total tackles (23 for loss) and 13.5 sacks—coming off a career-high 8.5 sack season in 2017. He also got a little more handsy last season, recording two pass breakups and a forced fumble.

Bosa may be the biggest name at DE when talking about the 2019 draft class, but he certainly isn’t the only one. Aside from the Buckeye, Miller names Ed Oliver (Houston) and Rashan Gary (Michigan) as his top D-line prospects heading into next year’s draft.

Potentially having another draft with multiple first round picks is exciting. Aside from Bosa being a given, Miller also expects Dre’Mont Jones to be a Round 1 take and for CB Kendall Sheffield to continue the first-round tradition of defensive backs out of Ohio State.

Perhaps not as well-known as Bosa, Jones was a pivotal player for the Buckeyes the past two seasons. After taking a redshirt his freshman year, he went on to collect 71 total tackles (9 for loss) and one sack in his two years among the defensive line rotation. Jones isn’t really designated as an edge prospect, but should be able to find his niche at the next level.

Sheffield, on the other hand, has had a bit of a windy career before landing with the Buckeyes. Initially enrolled to play for Alabama, the cornerback moved to JUCO in 2016 before transferring to OSU in 2017. In his first season in Columbus, he became the heir apparent for a starting role in the secondary, having recorded 40 total tackles, nine pass breakups and a forced fumble. With Denzel Ward and Damon Webb no longer on the roster, Sheffield’s experience puts him among the top of the class.

Not all the top Buckeyes considered draft prospects in next year’s class were given a first-round grade, but were named among the top of their respective positions. Mike Weber was graded as the No. 7 running back prospect, Isaiah Prince at No. 10 among OTs and Michael Jordan coming in at No. 9 among interior offensive linemen.

Some takeaways from these rankings: 1) We’re in for another BIG draft for Buckeyes, 2) Miller isn’t expecting for J.K. Dobbins to declare early (yay!), and 3) Seriously, no wideouts?

Almost a year in advance of the 2019 NFL Draft, there are already six Buckeyes considered locks coming off the draft board. Whether they end up going in Round 1 or Round 6 is yet to be seen, but regardless, they are expected to hear their name called throughout the three-day event. The 2018 football seasons isn’t even among us, and some starters haven’t even been named yet, so it’s fairly safe to assume that the list of viable Ohio State prospects will continue to grow.

Mike Weber absolutely deserves to be ranked among the best of the rushers, but the omission of J.K. Dobbins means that Miller isn’t expecting the younger Buckeye to make the transition to the pros next season. Declaring early—especially for RBs—is commonplace, given the wear and tear these players put on their bodies. Dobbins being around for a year without Weber will really allow him to become the feature back that he is.

The biggest question mark of this entire big board is the lack of any OSU receivers. Look, I get it, the past few years have been rough for wideouts at Ohio State. Despite this, though, last year’s group was able to carve out individual niches throughout the offense to make it work—and if you don’t consider Parris Campbell a top prospect, then I don’t know what to tell you.

We are a long way from the 2019 NFL Draft, but there’s already a lot to be excited about with the potential for your favorite NFL team to add some Buckeye talent.

Illinois Series @ Champaign, IL

Baseball: OSU wins series over Illinois, claims 30th win of year
The Buckeyes are one of the surprise teams in the Big Ten this season
The Ohio State baseball team won a pivotal three-game series at Illinois this weekend.

The Buckeyes (30-15, 11-7) prevailed in two contests against the Fighting Illini (27-16, 11-7), including a 10-5 victory in the rubber game on Sunday.

Ohio State won the first game of the series on Friday 6-5, due in large part to a three-inning save from standout senior closer Seth Kinker.

Illinois game back on Saturday and beat OSU to the tune of 11-3.

But the Buckeyes jumped on the Illini on Sunday and never looked back. Ohio State led by as much as seven at one point (10-3 in the seventh).

Kinker once again pitched the final three innings of the win.

Ohio State's offensive attack was led by junior Kobie Foppe and sophomore Noah West who each collected two hits and four RBIs. Junior catcher Jacob Barnwell added two hits and a run knocked in for OSU.

The Buckeyes are now tied for fourth place in the Big Ten with their aforementioned 11-7 mark. Minnesota and Michigan are both 13-3 in conference play, while Purdue checks in at 12-4.

Ohio State has its final five home games of the season this week. The Buckeyes will host Campbell on Tuesday and Wednesday, and will begin a three-game series with Purdue on Friday in Columbus.

OSU will end the regular season with a game at Cincinnati on May 15, and then a three-game series at Michigan State beginning May 17.

It wasn’t a full three-game sweep, but the Buckeyes did pull off an impressive feat in the final matchup.

It’s been a wild ride for Ohio State softball this season. From record-breaking at-bats, to some pretty surprising series defeats, the 2018 campaign had a little bit of everything for the Buckeyes. After going 1-2 on the weekend — but winning the regular season finale in spectacular fashion — the ladies finished the regular season 34-13 (and 14-8 in Big Ten contents).

The team wrapped up their year with a run-rule win over Michigan on Sunday. It wasn’t a full series sweep of the rival Wolverines, but a 10-1 victory to end the season isn’t all that bad — especially against the No. 14 ranked team in the country. Embarrassing Michigan is always fun, and the Buckeyes did just that, handing TTUN their first run-rule loss at home since 2000.

— Ohio State on BTN (@OhioStateOnBTN) May 6, 2018

Ohio State was quick to get on the board, beginning with Lilli Piper’s 19th (!!!) home run of the season — tying the program’s single-season record. Emily Clark followed that up be being walked, with Niki Carver moving the runner to second base with a single. Ashley Goodwin brought the two home with a two-RBI single.

The Buckeyes didn’t slow down with quality at-bats throughout the next several innings. Piper wasn’t the only one with a home run on Sunday, Shelby McCombs was a big contributor at the plate with a three-run shot in the second inning — her 13th of the season.

This is the second-straight year that Ohio State has beat Michigan in their series finale, and the Buckeyes even forced TTUN to commit a season-high four errors.

The Buckeyes were able to bounce back for Sunday’s beatdown, after two tough losses earlier in the weekend. Their first contest was a close 2-3 loss to the Wolverines on Friday, followed by an 8-run shut-out loss on Saturday.

The regular season may be over, but there is still plenty of softball left to play, with the Big Ten Tournament getting underway on Thursday, May 10. The Buckeyes are the No. 5 seed, and will face Iowa at 8 p.m. ET.

Urban Meyer and crew had their hands full over the weekend.

The weekend might’ve not ended with any verbal commitments for Ohio State, but many potential Buckeyes still found their names in the headline over the last few days.

Did you miss out of your OSU recruiting fix? Don’t worry, Land-Grant Holy Land has your back.

Recruits flock to Columbus

With numerous camps being held in the area a pretty solid list of prospects made the trek to the Ohio State University campus over the weekend to mingle with the coaching staff, and get a better feel on what it would be like to play their college ball for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

Giving the Buckeyes a chance to show some of the top recruits in the Midwest what it would be like to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray, the Buckeyes had numerous prospects walk away from their time on campus highly impressed.

OSU recruits “Get Open”

Following in the footsteps of a long list of former, future, and potential Buckeyes, three class of 2019 prospects with Ohio State ties were selected to participate in “The Opening”, a best-of-the-best camp being held in Texas later this summer.

Shining against the stiff competition on hand in Massillon for the regional camp, key OSU targets Zach Harrison, a defensive end from Olentangy Orange, West Bloomfield (MI) linebacker Lance Dixon, and Chicago tight end Jahleel Billingsley were among those picked to attend the event this go around.

— The Opening (@TheOpening) May 5, 2018

Before they head to the longhorn state, all three of the aforementioned recruits will have tough decisions ahead of them.

A five-star prospect, the 6-foot-6, 240-pound Harrison is trying to set up visits, including one to Ohio State, after officially Penn State last month.

Dixon, who could also play safety on the next level, might be hard to pluck away from instate programs and OSU foes, Michigan, and Michigan State.

While it will be tough to add Dixon, Billingsley might be the Buckeyes best chance of landing a tight end. Al though it isn’t a position of much need in the 2019 class, Jahleel, a 6’-foot-5 standout is fresh off a visit to Columbus, where he walked away highly impressed with the coaching staff, and program as a whole.

All three recruits will be joined by current OSU pledges, offensive lineman Doug Nester, and wide receiver Garrett Wilson in Texas.

How does Joe Burrow’s graduation impact OSU’s 2018 quarterback decision?

On Sunday, over 11,900 Buckeyes graduated at Ohio Stadium, marking the largest graduating class in Ohio State history. Amongst the throng of grads were 189 OSU student-athletes, including “individual and team national champions, All-Americans, Olympians, conference leaders, outstanding students and Big Ten Medal of Honor finalists.”

HAPPY GRADUATION DAY‼️
⚽⚾
Grads from sports of all sorts turn the tassel today!#GoBucks pic.twitter.com/uPCzMOOFAR

— Brutus Buckeye (@Brutus_Buckeye) May 6, 2018

Included in the group of Buckeye athletes receiving diplomas today are football players Dante Booker, Joe Burrow, and Christian Bryant; men’s basketball player Kam Williams; women’s basketball standouts Kelsey Mitchell, Makayla Waterman, and Sierra Calhoun; and many more.

Some standout Buckeyes from less publicized sports receiving their degrees on Sunday include three-time All-American and two-time national champion, men’s volleyball star Nicolas Szerszen; two-time Big Ten Men’s Tennis Player of the Year Mikael Torpegaard; three-time women’s sport pistol national champion Irina Andrianova; national champion women’s foil fencer Eleanor Harvey; four-year All-American Bo Jordan; and more.

With all of the accolades accumulated by the 189 athletes earning their degrees, much of Buckeye Nation’s attention will be on one particular recent grad, quarterback Joe Burrow. Despite a strong showing in two-consecutive spring games, it appears that the competition to succeed J.T. Barrett as the Buckeyes’ starter is still neck-and-neck between Burrow and Dwayne Haskins; or at least that’s how it appears from the outside.

Unless head football coach Urban Meyer has provided his signal-callers with a more complete picture of the situation heading into the summer than he has the public, many are suspecting that Burrow— with diploma and two years of eligibility in hand— could transfer in an effort to guarantee himself a more secure starting job this fall. Burrow could play immediately thanks to the NCAA’s graduate-transfer rule.

Burrow has stated publicly that he would prefer to remain in Columbus, but, following last months’ spring game, Meyer said, “We’re going to have to make some decisions. The decisions have not been made.’’

That indecision could lead to Burrow— whose father is the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Ohio University— to transfer to maximize his opportunities to prove himself to NFL scouts down the road.

In two years as a Buckeye, in limited reserve duty behind Barrett, Burrow threw for 287 yards on 29-of-39 passing, and two touchdowns with no interceptions; he also rushed for a TD as well.
