LGHL Ohio State freshman Jaelen Gill is looking to make an impact at H-back

Ohio State freshman Jaelen Gill is looking to make an impact at H-back

4665345.0.jpg

Also, who you got in the CFP this year? Yea, I’ve probably got the same thing.

“The H-back position at Ohio State is deep, with Parris Campbell and K.J. Hill coming back as key contributors and Demario McCall fighting for reps. But [Jaelen] Gill will be a factor at some point because this position perfectly suits his skill set.”

-Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

For all of the talk since Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus about developing the “next Percy Harvin,” the Buckeyes have only had one dominant H-back, and that was Curtis Samuel. Coming into 2018, there are three players that should see touches from the position; converted wide receiver Parris Campbell will again be the starter, K.J. Hill— another former WR— will likely be his back-up, with running back turned special teams ace Demario McCall fighting for time as well.

However, there is another name that Buckeye fans should get used to “Ewwwing” and “Ahhhing” over that might see time at H-back depending on how things shake out this season: Jaelen Gill.

The Westerville product was the 30th-ranked player in the 2018 recruiting class, and had offers from dozens of major programs around the country. But, now that he’s on campus and preparing for his first season of collegiate football, Gill is doing everything that he can to improve himself.

“I watch my own film almost every day, not to glorify myself or anything,” the freshman told Ginn. “I just try to watch the smallest things. Even if it’s a good play or whatever, I’ll see if I could have done anything better and just look at footwork and all that stuff.”

The 6-foot-1, lightning-footed athlete says that Meyer has told him that he can be “as good or better than Harvin and Samuel.” Of course two factors for Gill (and all of the potential H-backs) when it comes to the position’s productivity this year will be how new quarterback Dwayne Haskins steps in to replace J.T. Barrett and how Ryan Day’s play-calling takes advantage of all of the Buckeyes’ weapons.

If the rotation seen last year is any indication, Meyer and company will likely feel free to rotate their cavalcade of skill position players into games, especially when the outcome is no longer in doubt. And, with the recent rule change allowing players to retain their redshirts even if they’ve played in four games, the options for how Gill could be used are many. Either way, if and when he does see the field for the Buckeyes, the impact could be electric.

“So, who makes the 2018 College Football Playoff? The safest bet involves some combination of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Clemson, Oklahoma or Washington.”

-Bill Bender, The Sporting News

Look, when it comes to predictions— whether its March Madness, the Oscars, or the College Football Playoff— it’s always smartest to go with chalk if you want to have the best outcome, but come on, Bender (I swear I won’t make a “Futurama” joke), have some guts here.

Of those seven legitimate options and Michigan, Bender went with Oklahoma, Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State for the CFP. That’s the ultimate “sticking with chalk” move, because those are the only four schools to have ever made the CFP multiple times. Bender then really rolls the dice and goes with ‘Bama and Clemson to meet in the playoffs for the fourth year in a row (does that make Clemson the Cavs?); this time in the Championship game for the third time in four years.

Now, of course this all makes logical sense, and he did stipulate that these picks were the “safest bet,” but where’s the fun in that? It’s not like pundits (sports, politics, weather, or whatever) are ever held accountable for their failed predictions, so you might as well go buck wild.

Call for UCF to win its second-straight national title, this time legitimately. Call for the Big Ten to have two teams make the CFP for the first time ever. Call for Bill Snyder to take Kansas State to a Big XII title and then the playoffs. We are six and a half months away from crowning a new college football champ, and more than a month away from programs opening up fall camp; there’s no need to be logical with your predictions. No one will remember who you picked in a couple of weeks anyway, so go crazy!

Oh, me? You’d like to know who I’m picking to go to the CFP this season? Hmmmmm, let me think. I’m gonna go with... Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Clemson. You’re welcome.

“TREE: HELLO SIR OR MA’AM GOOD MORNING OR EVENING I WOULD LIKE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT OHIO STATE FOOTBALL”

-ActionCookbook, Every Day Should be Saturday

Like I mentioned above, we’ve still got some time before the college football season kicks off. In fact, it is just under 59 days until the first game of the season. So, it looks like our SBNation friends over at Every Day Should Be Saturday have decided to spend some of their slower summer days trolling Ohio State fans; as one apparently does.

“ActionCookbook” posted a satirical article today that implied that Ohio State fandom was something akin to a religious order that requires door-to-door evangelism. While I have been known to say, “From your mouth to Woody’s ears,” I do think that the characterization is a bit extreme, especially considering all of the loyal, level-headed Buckeye fans that frequent the pages of Land-Grant Holy Land, whom would never behave in a manner that would embarrass or tarnish the reputation of the fine institution that we all support.

So, on behalf of all Ohio State fans (alumni or otherwise), I take personal offense to the representation in the article, and hereby bite my thumb in its general direction. That being formally entered into the official record, I am all for every single joke at the expense of appropriately nicknamed “Dry Rot,” “Beaver,” and “Dutch Elm Disease.”

Anyone else surprised the B1G is 1..2..3 on football and basketball (combined) win percentage over the past 10 years? Anyone surprised that the OSU Beavers are #4?

Meh. If it's just straight-up win percentage, I'm not thrilled. Sure, it's cool to be #1 and all, but they play about 35 games in basketball? And 12-15 in football. When it's weighted 2-3 times in favor of one, the teams that are good in the other aren't going to have much of a shot.

Now, if they took the win percentage in football and the win percentage in basketball, and averaged those puppies out, and Ohio State is still #1, I'd think that's a little neater. That could only help Ohio State, since I'd imagine that Ohio State's win percentage in football is better than their win percentage in basketball. But it would also help out the SEC teams (and others) that don't like sports that don't require a helmet.

The Buckeyes 2020 class is off to an excellent start

Sometimes in college football recruiting, there are schools and recruits that just fit each other perfectly. These matches are rare, but they do happen, and just minutes ago, Ohio State added a commitment from what I would consider to be one of those “perfect fit” kids. 2020 safety Lejond Cavazos is officially a Buckeye commit, more than a year after picking up a scholarship offer.

This news isn’t very surprising, but it’s still a huge deal for Ohio State to get this pledge locked up. Cavazos has been one of Ohio State’s top 2020 defensive targets for nearly two years now, when they found him as a freshman. Since then, he’s visited campus four times, and spent a ton of time around the coaching staff.

His most recent visit, two weeks ago for a camp, was the one that sealed the deal. He saw everything he needed to see from Ohio State, Ohio State saw everything they needed to see from Lejond, and honestly, it’s surprising that he didn’t commit on the spot, because he was close.

Instead, he held off a bit, to think over the decision. Nothing changed, Ohio State remained the pick, and that held true today when he announced his pledge on Twitter. Obviously, because he won’t be an official Buckeye until 2020, we’re quite a ways out from seeing this commitment pay off on the field. However, when Lejond does suit up in Columbus, what can Buckeye fans expect to see?

On the field.

The first thing to consider about Lejond’s game is that he saw significant playing time at IMG Academy, the best high school football program in America, as a sophomore. At 15 and 16 years old, Lejond was good enough to play over older safeties, and when he did play, he shined.

A lot of what Cavazos showed when he played last season was athletic potential, a willingness to hit, and physical traits that can be built on by Alex Grinch and Greg Schiano. At 6-foot, 186 pounds, Cavazos has prototypical safety size, and fantastic speed. He’s a great athlete, and shows flashes of greatness as a pure coverage safety.

He doesn’t have a ton of the technique down yet, and the game hasn’t seemed to slow down for him consistently quite yet, but when it does, he could be a star. He has great range, and because of his speed and natural instincts, he’s able to cover a ton of ground, even when he has to survey the entire field.

His coverage skills, while not perfect yet, are pretty solid. He has fluid hips, and can usually keep up with receivers. He has the body control to make plays in the air, and his hands are very good, especially for a defender. With more experience and coaching, especially at the next level, Cavazos could look a lot like former Buckeye Malik Hooker in a couple of years.

When it comes to tackling, it’s the same story. Cavazos is strong, and willing to tackle, but his technique needs some help. He tends to hit a bit high, and takes very aggressive angles that can sometimes get him in trouble. I don’t think that he’s ever going to be a devastating hitter, but when he learns the rugby style tackling that Ohio State runs, he’ll be as solid as a safety needs to be.

In the class

There’s a ton of excitement around the 2020 class at Ohio State, and for good reason. it kicked off in April with a commitment from offensive tackle Jake Wray, and some of the best players in America seem to be Buckeye-leans right now. With that being said, Lejond is just the second member of the group, though that’ll almost certainly change this weekend.

Defensive back will be a big position of need in 2020, as Jeffrey Okudah, Shaun Wade, Marcus Williamson and Brendon White could all be off to the NFL draft by then. The class is obviously a long way from being done, but right now, R.J. Mickens and Miles Brooks are both worth watching as cornerbacks that could eventually join Lejond in the backfield.

Cavazos’ commitment moves Ohio State to 11th in the country, and first in the Big Ten, as they jump over Michigan. Cavazos picked the Buckeyes over 20 other offers, from some of the best programs in the country, including USC, Wisconsin, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas A&M and UCLA.

You can view Lejond’s highlights below, and read the commitment piece on him here.

The Buckeyes 2018 class may be down a man.

The 2018 class has yet to play a snap at Ohio State, but it may have already lost a member from the 26-man, second-ranked recruiting class. Per reports from the New Castle News, New Castle, Pennsylvania safety Marcus Hooker was arrested on June 16 for driving under the influence, careless driving, underage drinking, and five other related charges.

Hooker, of course is the brother of former Buckeye safety and current Indianapolis Colts player Malik Hooker. Marcus arrived on campus just a few weeks ago, along with all of the other freshmen that didn’t enroll early, and all things indicate that he had been going through summer workouts like the rest of the team up to this point. However, Hooker was not on campus this past weekend, as the reports indicate that he was arrested in Pennsylvania.

It’s unclear right now if Hooker will remain on the team, or what the punishment is going to be from urban Meyer and the program. It’s well known that Urban has had a very low tolerance for arrests while at Ohio State, and if the cases of Tracy Sprinkle, Carlos Hyde, or J.T. Barrett are an indication, Hooker will likely be suspended indefinitely, until more information becomes available.

Land Grant Holy-Land will have more information on this developing situation as it becomes available to us.

BOOOOOOM!! The Buckeyes land their second pledge for the class of 2020.

Still locking in 2019 pledges, Ohio State isn’t taking any time away from tracking down talented class of 2020 prospects.

Previously sitting at a single commitment, Ohio State’s junior class is now at two thanks for the Wednesday pledge of four-star safety Lejond Cavazos.

While most around the recruiting scene thought he would end up in the Scarlet and Gray when it was all said done, Urban Meyer and crew had to fight off a long list of solid college football programs to make it happen.

A Texas native who attends IMG Academy in Florida, the 6-foot, 186-pound Cavazos held over 20 scholarship offers from the likes of Georgia, Alabama and Oregon before deciding to call Columbus his future stomping grounds.

Mostly coming off the bench for the talent rich IMG Academy Ascenders last season, Cavazos might’ve only finished his sophomore campaign with less than 10 total tackles, and one interception, but should see his time on the field expand as a junior with the graduation of prospects such as now Oklahoma true freshman Brendan Radley-Hiles, and others.

Currently considered the 10th safety and 201st overall prospect in the entire class of 2020, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Cavazos, who also ran track on the high school level, will reportedly first get his shot to crack the Buckeyes depth chart at cornerback when he arrives in the 614.

Still nearly two years away from signing on the dotted line, Cavazos, and four-star offensive lineman Jake Wray, the younger brother of current OSU true freshman lineman Max Wray, have the Buckeyes currently pegged as the 11th 2020 class in the country.

Want to know more about the newest Buckeye pledge? The Land-Grant Holy Land recruiting team will have much more on Lejond Cavazos and what his commitment means for Ohio State coming soon.

Comets and Asteroids and Meteors, Oh My!

'Monster' asteroid 4 times than the UK is so close to Earth you can see it - and here's how

1530116717908.jpg

An enormous asteroid has come so close to Earth that it is visible to the naked eye.

The space rock, known as 4 Vesta is four times the size of the UK and so bright that it can be spotted from 106 million miles away.

It is visible in both hemispheres, where it can be seen in the night sky near Mars, Saturn and the Sagittarius constellation.

The asteroid measures more than 326 miles in diameter, 50 times wider than the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs, will be visible in the night sky until July 16.

Vesta was first discovered in 1807 and was named after the Roman goddess of the hearth and home, who is sister to Ceres – the name of the largest asteroid in the belt, which measures 587 miles in diameter.

Ceres was recently reclassified as a dwarf planet.

The rock resides in the asteroid belt and is one of the largest known to man.

From Earth, the immense stone appears as a dim yellow dot.

...but that’s a historically-elite standard to live up to.

The Ohio State Buckeyes finished the 2017 and 2018 recruiting classes ranked No. 2 in the country. Last year’s team was also the second-most talented team in the country top to bottom, by both total talent and average player ranking.

Those past two classes were historically great. In fact, they rank 6th and 9th for all-time recruiting classes.

So how does Ohio State’s current 2019 class compare to that ridiculous standard?

The Buckeyes have accepted commitments from four players with a 247 Composite rating lower than .9 — Noah Potter, Steele Chambers, Craig Young, and Bryson Shaw. Is that more than usual for this point in the recruiting cycle?

The numbers

I looked at the last two recruiting classes at this point in their cycles compared to the 2019 class. However, this year’s Friday Night Lights was about a month earlier than in previous years, and since the Buckeyes can usually count on a few commits following that event, I also included those FNL-related commitments from 2017 and 2018 (Jeremy Ruckert and Marcus Hooker committed in the week following FNL last year, and Chase Young and Amir Riep committed in the week following the 2016 FNL).

Here’s the same recruiting data in box-and-whisker plot form (the whiskers are the highest- and lowest-rated recruits, the box shows the upper and lower quartiles, and the line in the box shows the median rating):

OSU_3yrrecruiting.JPG

Some notes:

  • The 2019 class has roughly five fewer commits than at the same point in the previous two recruiting classes.
  • The 2019 class also has the lowest mean rating — .9255 compared to .9527 and .9382. However, the 2019 class currently has the same blue chip percentage as the 2017 class (83%).
  • The 2018 and 2017 classes would eventually have 4 and 5 decommits, respectively, that were committed at this point in the year. Last year’s decommits were especially highly rated, including Emory Jones, Jaiden Woodbey and Brenton Cox. The 2019 class hasn’t seen any decommits yet, but it’s interesting to think that some percentage of the current class may not stick.
  • 2019’s median rating (.92) is roughly the same as 2018’s bottom quartile (.9212), while 2019’s upper quartile (.96) is a little lower than 2018’s median (.9624).
  • 2019’s interquartile range (the middle 50% of player ratings) .0645, between the much smaller 2018 class IQR (.0598) and 2017’s large one (.0777). So, the 2018 class was both higher rated on average and had less variability than 2019’s, while the 2017 class had more variability than either class, but was also higher-rated on average (both mean and median) than the 2019 class too.
  • If you take out the 2018 and 2017 FNL commits, the mean averages change to: 2019 (same, .925), 2018 (.957), and 2017 (.936) — so not much different, but with two more commits in each class.

All in all, not only is the 2019 class smaller at this point than in the previous two classes, but it is also ranked a little lower on average — whether you look at the mean, median, or the interquartile range of commit ratings.

But Ohio State’s class is still ranked No. 10 overall and has the third-highest average rating in the country (behind Alabama and Georgia). Also, the Buckeyes could get more commits in the next month (if you didn’t care about Friday Night Lights). In fact, IMG Academy safety Lejond Cavazos (.9199) is set to announce on the June 27, with 100 percent of the crystal ball votes for Ohio State.

Also, we’re comparing player ratings from before the 2019 class plays their senior seasons. Ratings will change. So it’s entirely possible that some of the lower-rated 2019 commits get ratings bumps by the time the 2019 class 247 Composite scores are finalized.
