Could Ohio suddenly have two major conference football programs in the near future?

The ins and outs of Big 12 expansion has been a crazy story, long on talking and deliberation, and short on hard and fast news over the last few years.

But after last night’s Big 12 conference call, it looks like there might actually invite somebody else to the party after all. They’re essentially holding open solicitations for bids now, and you can bet everybody and their brother will be working the phones now, hoping for one of the last lifeboats away from the Group of 5 life.

If you’re a Big Ten fan, this story might have been fun to follow as a curiosity. For all of the Big Ten’s faults, they’re unquestionably more stable than the Big 12, and a fan has every right to feel more confident in Jim Delany’s decision-making, even if you’re still kind of mad about Rutgers.

But now that expansion appears to be moving beyond just the realm of message board hypotheticals and into something approaching reality, Ohio State fans just might have a dog in this fight after all.

How should they feel about Cincinnati?

One of the reasons Ohio State has been a dominant program for nearly the last hundred years is geography. For much of the 20th century, Ohio was one of the biggest hotbeds of high school football talent in the country, and even as that reputation has taken a slight hit thanks to budget cuts and demographic shifts, Ohio still produces more blue-chip recruits than all but four other states in the country. And unlike the other power states like Texas and California, Ohio State hasn’t had to really share Ohio with anybody.

Sure, other programs, like Notre Dame, Michigan, and other Big Ten schools, would try to recruit Ohio, and will occasionally grab a kid that the Buckeyes want. But given the vast gap in resources, prestige and conference affiliation between Ohio State and the other universities in Ohio, no real threat could ever be raised by an in-state program, despite a proliferation of other universities. Only Louisiana can boast a similar dominance of their own borders, and it’s no accident the Tigers are a college football power either.

But that might change. Cincinnati has made absolutely no secret about their desire to join a Power 5 conference, specifically, the Big 12. I’ve even seen some of the promotional materials they’ve sent. And while we’re a ways from the Big 12 making any real decisions, virtually every national writer has the Bearcats as one of the favorites to grab a spot. For what it’s worth, I’ve heard the same thing.

Per the USA TODAY database, last year, Cincinnati had athletic department revenue of about $52.5 million, good for 54th in the country, and near the top of non-power conference schools. While the exact financials of what a Big 12 invite would entail are unclear, as Cincinnati would undoubtedly have to wait to get a full revenue share, an eventual increase of at least $20 million over the next few years certainly seems reasonable. That would put the Bearcats as a peer to programs like Purdue, Iowa State and Kansas State. That’s a far cry from the $167 million Ohio State took in.

Those programs aren’t beating Ohio State, or other big boys, for recruits very often, if at all. But Buckeye fans know all too well that a Purdue is still capable of beating Ohio State, if the Buckeyes are unlucky or play especially poorly.

Ohio State is 14-2 all time against Cincinnati, and those two losses took place in 1896 and 1897. The two teams have played five times since the 1940s, and while Ohio State has won all of them, they’ve still had to work. The Bearcats made Ohio State sweat for portions of the game in 2014, before eventually falling 50-28. In 2002, another year Ohio State won a national championship, the Buckeyes were fortunate to escape Paul Brown Stadium win a victory, squeaking by, 23-19. The two teams are scheduled to play one more in the future, in Columbus in 2019.

Even though the Cincinnati region is where Ohio State is probably the weakest when it comes to in-state recruiting, it seems unlikely that the Bearcats would pose too much of a head to head threat to Ohio State in recruiting battles. There’s Power 5 precedent for that sort of arrangement. Iowa State rarely beats Iowa for recruits. Georgia Tech seldom grabs kids the Bulldogs want. Tennessee typically beats Vanderbilt for kids. That’s probably not the concern.

But with extra money, visibility and prestige, there’s reason to think Cincinnati could start beating other Big Ten programs, like Michigan State, Nebraska, Wisconsin or Minnesota, for players in Ohio. It could also potentially give other Big 12 programs, like Iowa State, West Virginia, or even others, an excuse to try and recruit Ohio more. Both of those scenarios have the potential to have a roundabout negative impact on Ohio State.

Should the Big 12 decide to go elsewhere, perhaps by picking BYU, Houston, Memphis or a slew of other candidates, it’s difficult to see how it would impact Ohio State very much.

A Cincinnati Big 12 invite would mean more quality football games held in the state of Ohio, and would be nice for fans of both programs. But if you’re a Buckeye fan dead set on keeping every advantage the program has enjoyed over the years, maybe you’d actually want to root against the Big 12 adding the Bearcats.

Amir Riep will announce his college plans this weekend.

One of the most sought after class of 2017 prospects, and recruits left on the Ohio State big board will be off the market in a matter of days. Hours after attending the Friday Night Light camp at Ohio State, four-star defensive back Amir Riep (Cincinnati, OH / Colerain) will announce his college commitment on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in front of family, teammates, friends and others in the gym of Cincinnati Colerain, according to Adam Baum of Cincinnati.com.

Riep, who racked up nearly 50 full ride scholarship offers during the process from universities around the country is considered the 13th cornerback and 114th overall recruit in the senior class, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Even though powerhouse football programs such as Alabama, Michigan State and Notre Dame were among the schools to give the 5-foot-11, 185-pound standout a chance to suit up for their program, many around the recruiting scene currently believe the Riep will end up playing on the next level for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

Already blessed with the top recruiting class in the country, Riep’s pledge would add even more pressure on the chokehold Meyer has on the likes of Georgia, and Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide.

With 14 commitments at the moment, Riep would be the fifth defensive back to jump at the chance to play for the Buckeyes, joining Shaun Wade, Marcus Williamson, Isaiah Pryor and Brendon White in the class of 2017.

Will the rumors come true or will Amir Riep shock the world and decided to take his talents outside of Ohio? We won’t have to wait much longer to find out. Stay with the Land-Grant Hold Land for the latest.

Buckeyes offer 2018 lineman

Still looking for their first 2018 commitment, Ohio State dished out an offer to one of the classes top recruits.

On Tuesday afternoon, offensive tackle William Barnes (Apopka, FL / Apopka) went to his Twitter page to announce that the Buckeyes are the latest to give him a chance to continue his football career at the next level.

Truly blessed to say that I have received my 11th offer from the Ohio State! #Buckeyes ⚪pic.twitter.com/PmtX3FVHEA

⚡️William Barnes⚡️ (@barneswilliam7) July 19, 2016

A class of 2018 prospect by way of the Sunshine State, Ohio State isn’t the first power five conference program to give Barnes a scholarship. The Buckeyes find themselves up against southern schools such as Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Auburn for the 6’4, and 290-pounder.

Quick Hits

  • Class of 2017 five-star running back Cam Akers (Clinton, MS / Clinton) will not make it to Friday Night Lights on the campus of Ohio State this week, per Alex Gleitman of Bucknuts.
  • While Akers won’t be on hand for the camp, a 2019 standout will. Defensive tackle Jacob Lacey (Bowling Green, Ky. / South Warren) will be among the talent at Friday Night Lights. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound sophomore has yet to pick up an offer from the Buckeyes, but currently has scholarships on the table from Kentucky, Louisville, Notre Dame and others.

No so long after announcing his return to the New England Patriots in a two-year extension deal that lands him a million-plus each year Nate Ebner will be missing training camp this summer as he heads to Brazil as a member of the USA Rugby Team. Bill Belichick, Ebner recalls, was welcoming of his pursuit – with no qualms of his absence this summer. “I was a bit nervous in bringing it to him. But he was understanding, and great!”

On Monday, USA Rugby men’s sevens head coach Mike Friday named the squad that will represent our nation at the Olympics in Brazil, among the 12 men named is current New England Patriots safety/special teamer and former Buckeye Nate Ebner.

Rugby is returning to the Olympics’ scheduled events after nearly a 100-year absence. It was last played in Summer Games way back in 1924. The USA team won the gold medal back then (this is when 15-men to a side was played then).

Ebner was a standout rugby player throughout his childhood, learning the game from his father, Jeff, who had played college rugby at the University of Minnesota. As a teenager, Nate mostly played against grown men, all of which were his father’s age – thereabouts. He was so good that at the age of 17 he became the youngest to play for the USA Sevens team, named MVP of the under-19 Junior World Championships and MVP of the under-20 world championship a year later.

Ebner decided he wanted to try football too. He would successfully walk on for The Ohio State University in 2009. This was his first try at organized football. The Patriots’ liked what they saw in Ebner despite his slender experience. They used a sixth round in the 2012 draft to add him to their family.

He has played in 57 games over the last four seasons, primarily as a special-teamer while also seeing some action at safety.

The announcement has added a feather to Nate’s hat of dreams. When his father was murdered on November 13, 2008, in a robbery attempt at the auto salvage shop he owned at the age of 54, Nate was only a month away from his 20th birthday. He was now tasked with the eulogy of the person he loved so dearly. His dream was to reach one of the highest levels of the sport that his father taught him – which they both loved so much…

…The Olympics is indeed the highest level. Nate’s father is beaming with pride from above.

Congratulations Nate!

It seems like you need at least a Roku 3 for Vue, though, and I'd prefer to not spend $80+ on devices for each room.

For broadcast channels I thankfully live on a high point in the area, above the visible tree line to the horizon in all northward directions, which is where all the local stations are, so I don't expect any issues with an antenna for that purpose (if I even need to, might be able to just plug into the wall).

Another huge get for the famed Buckeye camp

Ohio State will host its prestigious Friday Night Lights camp this week. Since Urban Meyer has been with Ohio State, this annual camp has become a staple in the football program's recruiting efforts. Year after year, the list of visitors only gets better, with this year being no different. The group of recruits scheduled to attend the event this weekend could possibly be the best yet.

5-star WR Lindsey to FNL

On Twitter late Monday night, five-star wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey (Corona, CA / Centennial) made the announcement on his status for FNL.

***FINALIZED***
I WILL BE IN COLUMBUS FOR THEE OSU'S FNL FOOTBALL CAMP THIS WEEKEND JULY 22nd. #GoBucks‼️ . pic.twitter.com/UQILcDw9Dj

— Tyjon A. Lindsey ® (@tyjonlindsey) July 19, 2016

The 5-foot-9 speedster has been in the Buckeye radar for quite some time. Currently, he is projected by 247Sports crystal ball to be going to Ohio State. Having Lindsey appear at FNL (after visiting with Alabama earlier this week) looks to be good news for the scarlet and gray.

The better news is that the Tweet from Lindsey includes the famed “Zone 6”. Star receivers have been made from Ohio State under Zach Smith’s guidance in the zone. Could Lindsey be the next one?

A hometown kid to Friday Night Lights

This impressive list only got better Monday, when Columbus native, Jaelen Gill (Westerville, OH / Westerville South) confirmed with Bucknuts that he would be one of the many recruits at this year's event. Gill is a heavy Buckeye lean as it stands today, but the 2018 star recruit has received plenty of offers from some of the best institutions in the country.

Gill is a four-star prospect and is seen as the No. 2 recruit in the state of Ohio. The 6-foot, 172-pound all-purpose running back is seen as the No. 2 all-purpose back in his class and 247sports currently has him slotted as the No. 29 overall player. It is a no-brainer that getting Gill on the Ohio State campus will help solidify the Buckeyes as the favorites to land the hometown talent, but don't expect Gill to be on commitment watch this week. Gill told Bucknuts there is no chance he will commit this weekend.

Gill has offers from the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, Florida State, Penn State, Oregon and Wisconsin - just to name a few. Expect him to take his time in his recruitment process, as it seems he wants to make sure he seeks out every opportunity presented to him. It will be crucial to Ohio State's 2018 recruiting class to keep Gill in-state, keep up to date with Land-Grant Holy Land for any and all updates on his recruitment.

Elite 2018 talent working hard to attend FNL

Ohio State may have another elite recruit from the 2018 class attend Friday Night Lights this year. We already talked about how Jaiden Woodbey (Upland, CA / St. John Bosco) would like to attend the event this year, and despite all sorts of obstacles in his way, the California product is trying his best to find a way to get across-country to be in Columbus this weekend.

Woodbey is a four-star safety and is looked at as one of the top three at his position. He is current teammates with one of Ohio State's 2017 commits, Wyatt Davis, the No. 1 offensive guard in the country. Davis mentioned last week that Woodbey is the No. 1 guy he is recruiting to join him in Columbus, and the two were scheduled to attend the camp this weekend together.

Unfortunately, Davis will not be able to attend the event due to a family event, but that hasn't stopped Woodbey in his efforts to make the trek to Columbus. Woodbey told 247sports that he is now looking at one of his current coaches for a ride. If the coach is able to attend the event, look for Woodbey to impress at the camp. He will have plenty of opportunities to cover a great group of WR prospects attending this years camp.

Ohio State CB target will transfer to IMG Academy

IMG Academy has become one of the best football institutions in high school football, and Ohio State has had a lot of luck in recruiting elite talents from the academy as of late. The Buckeyes were able to secure commits from two members of the program in the 2016 recruiting class and already have commits from two others for 2017.

Houston Griffith (Bradenton, FL / IMG Academy) announced Monday that he would be transferring to the elite program for his final two years of high school. Griffith is on the Buckeyes radar and Urban Meyer's football program has already offered him a scholarship. However, the Buckeyes have some stiff competition with Notre Dame and Michigan State being the favorites to land his services.

The four-star cornerback has seen the activity in his recruitment process skyrocket this summer and now that he will be able to practice with an institution like IMG Academy, expect even more elite universities to join his list of suitors. The Buckeyes will have to continue to recruit Griffith if they are keen on him playing in Columbus, and will need to get him to visit the university at least once before he is even close to being ready to commit.

Ohio State running back Bri’onte Dunn has been dismissed from the football team, Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer announced in a statement released by the school on Monday.

The career that never was. Bri’onte seemed to live in coach Meyers doghouse early during his time at Ohio State. Coming to Columbus as the No. 8 ranked running back in the 2012 recruiting class there was high hope for him to produce. For his career in the Scarlet and Gray Dunn had 291 yards while scoring three touchdowns.

Dunn was coming into the 2016 season with hopes of competing against Mike Weber for the starting running back position.

OSU sends an upperclassman potential starter packing.

Widely expected to be either the starter or top backup to succeed Ezekiel Elliott at running back, Ohio State fifth year senior Bri’onte Dunn was dismissed by the football team Monday.

“Bri’onte Dunn has been dismissed from the Ohio State football program for a violation of team rules,” OSU head coach Urban Meyer said in a statement.

Dunn, a Canton, OH native, had one season of eligibility remaining.

The specifics that led to his dismissal were not made available by the team or otherwise.

Coming out of high school, Dunn has was a four-star hailing from GlenOak. The number eight running back in his class, Dunn never broke through the way many expected, struggling to seize the few limited opportunities he received throughout his time in Columbus.

Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer said as recently as this March he’d hoped Dunn would win the battle against sophomore running back Mike Weber to become the Buckeyes’ primary ballcarrier.

There’s a new, but familiar face coming back to Columbus.

There’s a new member of the Ohio State Buckeyes’ basketball staff as of Monday evening. Thad Matta has hired former Charlotte head coach Alan Major as Director of Player Development, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS.

This hire should not come as a surprise if you know the history between Matta and Major. The latter spent nine years with Matta as an assistant at Xavier from 2001-04, and from 2004-10 at Ohio State. Major’s last coaching stop in Charlotte resulted in a five year tenure, with one NIT appearance for the school.

Major’s hiring also comes less than a week after a video surfaced of Thad Matta speaking about his team and the transfers that left the program after a difficult 2015-16 season.

The familiarity between both Matta and Major should make for good compatibility, and hopefully provides better results for the Buckeyes moving forward. They’ve certainly had their successes together in the past.

In 1992 the Chicago Cubs were stuck in a quagmire despite what was supposed to be a homerun free agent class of slugger George Bell, ace Danny Jackson and closer Dave Smith.
Clubhouse attendant Yosh Kiwano saw the team brass moping around and told them sometimes you can add by subtracting. The Cubs traded Bell to the contending White Sox for a kid named Sosa and the rest is Slammin’ Sammy history.
I tell you this anecdote because it is remarkably similar to what is going on with the Ohio State men’s basketball team. Coach Thad Matta recently spoke at a golf outing and told the crowd that “we got rid of problems but we kept solutions.”
In other words, the Buckeyes got better by subtracting players. In total, since the end of the season, a total of four players have left the program.
Foul-prone center Daniel Giddens went to Alabama. Point guard A.J. Harris, who had one highlight-reel play and not much else, went to New Mexico State, and street baller Mickey Mitchell went to Cal-Santa Barbara. Austin Grandstaff was the first to leave, going to Oklahoma and then landing at DePaul without ever playing a game for the Sooners.
These players, had they returned, would not have been among the top six in returning scorers.

Goodbye.

See ya.

Adios.

Safe travels.

That’s how Matta feels too. In fact, based on his comments after the Florida game, where he admitted to saying “some of you are going to transfer. You don’t know it yet, but whatever you do — don’t come see me. Just shoot me a text, because I’m tired of looking at you,” a friendly “goodbye” was probably more than Matta wanted to offer.

The most telling comment Matta made throughout this whole thing was when he said “I’m tired of the B.S. I’m going back to coaching basketball. I’m going back to running this program the way we did when we got here.”
One only needs to look at the last three years to understand what he meant. OSU finished fifth in the B1G in 2013-14, sixth in 14-15 and seventh this past season in missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since winning the NIT after the 2007-08 season. The only highlight was keeping Matta’s 20-win string in tact.

This past year, with a lot of inexperience and youth, OSU had bad losses to Texas-Arlington, Louisiana Tech and Memphis and head-scratching wins over No. 4 Kentucky and No. 8 Iowa.

It was a bad combination of inexperience, and players who cared only about themselves and stats. Guys were erratic and took plays off. And quite frankly, I think Matta let the assistants do too much. He needs to jump back in and reclaim his team, which is what I think he will do.

These last three seasons the team has had no identity, no real go-to guy despite having a roster of players like LaQuinton Ross and Sam Thompson.

That was unheard of in his first few years. Players played hard, played gritty and played for each other. I expect to see a lot more of that as we move forward. And a return to hard-nosed defense, which was a staple of early Matta teams.

And let’s face it, OSU was not a good shooting team and was unable to close out close games, especially in 13-14, when it lost six games by six or less points during conference and NCAA tournament action.
With Chris Jent back as an assistant, I suspect OSU’s shooting will dramatically improve.
And with Matta committed to doing what they did when he first arrived, any decline in the program (and I don’t call missing the NCAA tournament once a decline) will be short-lived.

As I mentioned, the Buckeyes have their top six guys back plus some decent recruits. Marc Loving is the only senior on the roster and I really believe Keita Bates-Diop will start living up to his high school stud status while Jaquan Lyle will be a candidate for B1G player of the year.

Some are questioning Matta recruiting these players to begin with. But just like a head coach, players are on their best behavior during recruiting and sometimes a coach doesn’t see true colors until they hit the court. Recruiting is not a perfect science. There are more misses than hits. Look at all the No. 1 and 2 classes Kentucky has had and what’s that gotten the Wildcats? One title.

Duke always seems to have a top 5 or 10 class and has one title in the last six years and no other Final Four appearances during that time.

Remember way back during the Randy Ayers days when he recruited Indiana and Illinois studs Charles “Killer” Macon and Gerald Eaker to go with Mr. Ohio Greg Simpson. That didn’t work out too well either.

It happens.

Matta is ready to fix things and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

LGHL Braxton Miller's role cannot be defined by one position

Braxton Miller's role cannot be defined by one position

From outside receiver to running back, the former Buckeye can be a playmaker anywhere on the field.

"Playmaker. Just a playmaker. I’ll play slot. Outside. Inside. Running back. Whatever’s in the game plan, I’m capable of playing any position."

Ohio State fans know well the versatile playmaking prowess of former Buckeye Braxton Miller. Beyond the ability to switch from quarterback to receiver heading into his senior year, Miller has shown that he can play any number of roles on offense--from any receiver role to running back. Drafted for his ability to grow and develop, having only played as a receiver for one season, the Houston Texans took a bet on his outstanding athleticism, believing that he will be able to turn into a high-caliber receiver at the game’s highest level. The fact that Miller can play a multidimensional role for a team which finished No. 19 in the league in total offense last season certainly helps as well. Texans GM Rick Smith has previously described Miller as "a versatile, explosive player. Trying to impact our football team, adding players who can add dimension to our football team who can make plays with the ball in their hands, and certainly he can do that."

Wide receivers coach Sean Ryan acknowledged that Miller has a great skill set, and is able to change directions and catch the ball well. While Ryan did not describe Miller’s potential role as broadly as Miller himself did, he did say that Miller is succeeding in both inside and outside receiving roles.

A particular pain point for Miller, mostly a result of a lack of experience at his new position, is his ability to deal with press coverage on the outside--an issue that will only be amplified when facing top-tier defensive backs in the NFL. Miller said that, having played in the Senior Bowl against some of the better DBs in college, he was able to improve his playmaking ability on the outside against press coverage, and is continuing to work on learning techniques to improve as he prepares for the start of his rookie season.

"At the end of the day, they’re still my brothers. They just made the decision they felt was best for them. I’m going to support them, and I hope they will support us."

With four of five members of the 2015 recruiting class for the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team having departed the program in the last year, including three since the end of last season, JaQuan Lyle remains the only remaining player in what was once a top-five class nationally. Still, there do not seem to be any hard feelings between the departed players and Lyle--or any of the other remaining Buckeyes, for that matter. Lyle’s postgame comments following a season-ending loss to Florida in the second round of the NIT Tournament in March, however, would not have painted such a friendly picture. As several members of the squad acknowledged their frustration with how the season ended, and vowed to do better the following year, Lyle called out the "hunger" of a team which seemed to play with no emotion or drive in their final game of the season. The following nine days saw the departure of freshmen center Daniel Giddens, forward Mickey Mitchell and point guard A.J. Harris from the program. (The final member of the recruiting class, guard Austin Grandstaff, had transferred from Ohio State just ten games into the season). All four will have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Even so, Lyle says that he was surprised by his teammates’ decisions to transfer, but that he has remained close with them throughout the summer. Junior forward Jae’Sean Tate echoed Lyle’s sentiment, adding that the players who have remained at Ohio State are the ones who truly want to be there for the right reasons.

"These are the things I think we dream about as little kids. What third-grader, fourth-grader, fifth-grader isn’t running around saying ‘I want to be an Olympian someday?’ This guy is living the life to do that so I can’t wait to watch him."

With the Olympics just a few weeks away, the eyes of Buckeye nation rest on Kyle Snyder, who has won both an NCAA title at the 285-pound weight class and a world championship at 97-kilograms in the last year alone. A former junior world champion, Snyder has been preparing for the games in reality for life, but especially over the past few months since the conclusion of the NCAA wrestling tournament in March. He officially earned his spot on Team USA with a win over 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jake Varner in the Olympic Trials in April, and has been relentless in his workouts since, training at Ohio State’s facilities in preparation.

Initially taking a redshirt during the college wrestling season in order to prepare for the freestyle wrestling of the Olympics, Snyder returned to the Buckeyes following the start of Big Ten matches and went 11-0 overall for Ohio State. He ultimately earned his individual title to compliment his 2015 team championship with a win over two-time NCAA heavyweight champ Nick Gwiazdowski from NC State.

Despite heading to Rio with the rest of the US Olympians, where he will participate in the opening ceremonies August 5, Snyder will have to wait until the last day of competition--August 21--to compete for his medal.

Snyder is the first Ohio State wrestler to compete in the Olympics in 24 years, and the first that Ohio State head coach Tom Ryan has coached. While Snyder is excited to represent Ohio State on the international stage, he is also eager to compete for the U.S.: "Other than serving our country in the military, I feel like being an Olympian is the next best way to represent your country and I’m really excited to do it."

"Derek is one of those guys who is going to be able to play multiple positions at Ohio State. Who he works with is going to be dependent on what day it is.Obviously we’re excited about his versatility and that’s the biggest thing that he’s going to bring to the program."

-Ohio State associate head coach Dave Dickerson, via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

The highest-ranked member of this year’s incoming men’s basketball recruiting class, freshman Derek Funderburk from Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia, may be able to provide the versatility the Ohio State Buckeyes most desperately need on the court. Funderburk, who was the No. 66 recruit nationally, also received offers from Indiana, Iowa, Penn State and Xavier.

The six-foot-nine, 210-pound power forward, originally from Lakewood, Ohio, likely won’t be battling with big men Trevor Thompson and David Bell for the center spot, and should have ample opportunity for high percentage plays close to the basket. Funderburk won a national dunk contest earlier this year for prep school students, and has looked to diversify from the center position where he first began playing before moving to power forward. Ideally, he would like to move to shooting guard, though he is still listed as a forward on the Buckeyes’ roster.

Ohio State returns its six top scorers from last season, which could prove to be a good thing for Funderburk. Senior forward Marc Loving said that he could not pin a single position on the new freshman, indicating his versatility. Associate head coach Dave Dickerson says that Funderburk’s role could vary even from day-to-day based on the team’s needs. Especially given the loss of four members of the 2015 recruiting class, Funderburk has ample opportunity to fill any number of roles in the 2016-17 season. More than his position on the court, though, Funderburk says that he will bring an aggressive and confident mentality to a team that, in many ways, played without emotion for much of last season.

LGHL Ohio State men's lacrosse is building on a disappointing season

USA U19 MEN'S LAX TEAM WINS CHAMPIONSHIP
Buckeyes Matt Borges and Christian Feliziani represent Ohio State on the U19 USA Men's Lacrosse Team. Team USA is coached by none other than Ohio State head coach, Nick Myers. The team defeated Canada, which also housed Buckeye lacrosse players, to take home the gold in 13-12 comeback victory. Canada started off the game with a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Team USA trailed 8-2 at the end of the half. Team USA steadily made its comeback throughout the second half and scored the winning goal in the final eight seconds of the game. It was a finish to be remembered.
