Longtime Buckeye commit Shaun Wade penciled in his visit dates for Ohio State

Shaun Wade (Jacksonville, FL / Trinity Christian Academy) has been committed to Ohio State for the majority of his recruiting process. He committed to the Buckeyes in January of 2015 but that hasn't stopped him from seeing what other top programs have to offer.

Wade made it known soon after his commitment that he still wanted to see what other schools had to offer – and to reaffirm he makes the best decision. Bill Kurelic of 247Sports spoke with the five-star CB's father on Monday and he confirmed his son's official visit dates.

Wade's father said his son will be visiting Ohio State the weekend of Oct. 8 and will also visit Notre Dame and Michigan. His father also mentioned he wants his son to take advantage of the two remaining official visits allocated to Wade. Kurelic listed Alabama, Florida, USC and Florida State as the most likely candidates if he is able to do so.

The five-star CB is one of the top-ranked commits of Urban Meyer's tremendous 2017 recruiting class and it is essential they keep him. It appears Meyer and the Buckeyes will get an additional chance to persuade Wade, as Kurelic confirmed the elite prospect will also take an unofficial visit to Ohio State on Nov. 26, when Buckeyes arch-rival Michigan comes to Columbus.

Recent Buckeye QB commit earns 5th star

Emory Jones (Franklin, GA / Heard County) is the newest Buckeye pledge and is already the second commitment Urban Meyer has for his 2018 class, joining RB Brian Snead (Seffner, FL / Armwood). Many have lauded Jones' talents and on Monday, Rivals.com awarded him a fifth star in their updated Rivals100 for the 2018 class.

The now five-star QB is also listed as the No. 5 overall player of the entire class in the state of Georgia. Jones will be joining a crowded and talented group of QB's Ohio State has accumulated the last few years. While this year's team has two viable back up QB's in Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins. Urban Meyer has also been able accrue two more QB commits for the 2017 class in four-star Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV Bishop Gorman) and three-star Danny Clark (Akron, OH / Archbishop Hoban). Despite the talented group, many have claimed Jones has the talent to be the best of the them all.

There were also multiple Buckeye 2018 recruiting targets joining Jones in the new Rivals100. Five-star DE Xavier Thomas (Florence, SC / Wilson) was listed at No. 3 overall and four-star Columbus native Jaelen Gill (Westerville, OH / Westerville South) was ranked at No. 28. Another in-state prospect, four-star WR L'Christian (Blue) Smith (Dayton, OH / Wayne,) was listed at No. 33 and right behind him was four-star CB Houston Griffith (Bradenton, FL / IMG Academy) at No. 34.

Rounding out the list was four-star S Jaiden Woodbey (Upland, CA / St. John Bosco) who is currently teammates with 2017 Buckeye commit and a five-star OG, Wyatt Davis. Davis has mentioned he is heavily recruiting Woodbey to join him at Ohio State.

Pryor’s earning the praise of his coaches and teammates as he tries to stick in Cleveland as a wide receiver.

"But on Sunday afternoon, the Buckeyes upperclassmen took the field for their first practice of training camp. That’s where you get a better idea of where the depth chart stands"

-Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

With so many vacant starting spots to fill for the Ohio State Buckeyes prior to the start of the 2016 season, the start of fall camp will play a crucial part in determining the much-anticipated depth chart. The upperclassmen took the field for the first time yesterday for the start of fall training camp, with incoming freshmen joining tomorrow. Even so, very few of these newcomers have a realistic shot at earning a starting role before the Buckeyes take on Bowling Green Sept. 3 (offensive lineman Malcolm Pridgeon, a junior college transfer, is perhaps one of the exceptions).

While J.T. Barrett has the starting quarterback job on lockdown, he, along with linemen Pat Elflein and Billy Price, are the only returning starters on offense. Urban Meyer named junior Jamarco Jones, who played in all 13 games last season, as the starting left tackle in April. Other potential starters received playing time last year and, with a solid start to training camp, could secure a starting role early on. Curtis Samuel and Dontre Wilson, for instance, are two of the most experienced players remaining on offense from last season, and are shoo-ins for H-back and receiver spots, respectively. Redshirt freshman Mike Weber is the leader for the starting running back role, while sophomore Noah Brown is the frontrunner for the other receiver spot.

On the defensive side, defensive ends Tyquan Lewis and Sam Hubbard bring back significant playing experience alongside tackles Tracy Sprinkle and Michael Hill. Incoming freshman Nick Bosa could shake things up as the season progresses in either role on the defensive line. Junior Raekwon McMillan anchors the linebackers, alongside potential starters Dante Booker and Chris Worley. The secondary is less certain, as cornerback Gareon Conley is the only player with a clear starting role. Safeties Damon Webb, Cam Burrows, Malik Hooker, Erick Smith and Eric Glover-Williams are all vying for spots alongside Marshon Lattimore and Denzel Ward at the other corner spot.

"He’s done a tremendous job. There’s a lot of guys I can say that about, but he’s taken this opportunity and is trying to make the most of it. He’s worked extremely hard."

-Browns head coach Hue Jackson, via Mitch Stacy, Associated Press

After a five-year ban from playing on-campus at Ohio State, former Buckeye quarterback Terrelle Pryor made his return to the Horseshoe--this time as a receiver for the Cleveland Browns as part of the Orange and Brown scrimmage played at Ohio State prior to the start of the NFL preseason. More than 43,000 people attended the second edition of the scrimmage Saturday as part of the Browns’ training camp.

While official records were not kept in the no-pads scrimmage, Pryor ended the day with six receptions, including one touchdown each from quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown. Pryor celebrated the second touchdown--a 75-yard haul from McCown which concluded the scrimmage--with an "O-H-I-O" cheer in the endzone, much to the delight of the dual Ohio State/Cleveland fans there. Pryor is the only remaining former Buckeye on the Browns’ roster, which last year included former Ohio State standouts Brian Hartline and Donte Whitner.

Pryor did not compete in last year’s Orange and Brown scrimmage at the Horseshoe, owing to a hamstring injury which kept him sidelined, but it was unclear if he would have been able to compete anyway, as he was still serving an Ohio State-imposed suspension for his role in the 2011 scandal which ultimately cost Jim Tressel his job as head coach. The university only lifted the ban this past month. Still, some of Pryor’s former teammates, such as his former guard, Alex Boone, have not been as forgiving of Pryor’s behavior.

“There are Ohio State fans and graduates in the military over there (in Japan). There were a couple people that came to every game and after every game they would look at me and do ‘O-H’ and I’d do ‘I-O’ back. It was crazy."

-Thad Matta, via Adam Jardy, Columbus Dispatch

Not all former Thad Matta pupils get to chase their NBA dreams, but that doesn't mean the window is completely closed on their playing basketball professionally.

See former Buckeye big man Evan Ravenel.

The one time Boston College transfer has been a bit of an international man of mystery, playing everywhere abroad from Bulgaria to Japan -- and seemingly everywhere in between.

But with a two-year deal to head to Israel, where former Buckeye LaQuinton Ross recently honed his craft, Ravenel seems set to keep his dreams alive, while laying the groundwork for a fulfilling life after basketball.

If his former college coach is any indicator, Ravenel may well have the ability to transition into coaching when everything's said and done on the court. Either way, he's had quite the career arc, letting basketball take him all around the world. And the best may be yet to come.

Ohio State and Urban Meyer face some big challenges as they try to reclaim the Big Ten title with 12 NFL draft picks gone and just eight starters back. Meyer has lived a charmed life since taking over Ohio State in 2012, posting a 50-4 overall record and a 31-1 Big Ten mark. His crowning feat was winning the 2014 national championship, and last year’s team looked poised to repeat before a late-season stumble at home vs. Michigan State. The goal is to get back to summit. The Bucks are loaded at quarterback once again.

One of the most respected reporters and analysts in the game, Fox’s Bruce Feldman, has been ranking different position groups across the country this offseason. Earlier today, he got to the quarterbacks, singling out not just the programs with the best QBs for the 2016 season, but the best QB position groups, which would include backups.

It isn’t a surprise that Feldman thinks highly of Ohio State’s outfit, naming it the seventh best in the country.

A major part of that is because of the man leading the show, J.T. Barrett. Barrett’s 2015 statline was relatively modest, thanks to splitting time with Cardale Jones, and with the coaching learning curve in the wake of Tom Herman’s departure (992 yards passing with a 63.3% completion rate, 11 TDs and 4 INTs). But the last time he had the bulk of the season to himself, all Barrett did was finish fifth in Heisman voting, throwing 34 TD passes.

Barrett will be throwing to some relatively inexperienced wideouts and handing off to a relatively inexperienced running back, but given his strengths, how he fits with Urban Meyer’s scheme, and the continuity in the coaching staff, there’s a lot of optimism about how he’ll perform this season, and with good reason. Barrett will enter the season as the best quarterback in the Big Ten, and is a perfectly legitimate Heisman candidate, and one of the better quarterbacks in the country.

But it isn’t just Barrett that sets Ohio State up as one of the best QB rooms in the country. And if current trends hold, the Buckeyes should be on similar lists for the next several years.

It all comes down to recruiting, and few have recruited the quarterback position as well as Ohio State over the last few years. After Barrett, the Buckeyes boast two blue-chip options in redshirt freshman Joe Burrow, and true freshman Dwayne Haskins. Per Feldman, Meyer gushed about Haskins last winter, calling him “the best QB recruit I’ve ever seen”. He’s certainly one of the highest rated recruits the Buckeyes have picked up at QB, with a 247Sports Composite ranking over over .9500.

Not very many programs can point to QB recruiting like that. Penn State only has one blue-chip player currently in their QB room. Same with Nebraska. Wisconsin doesn’t have any. A few other programs in the Big Ten can claim two, but even fewer can claim a pedigree comparable to Haskins. In the conference, perhaps only Michigan can, and they are preparing to pick between two three-star recruits for their QB job this year.

Ohio State’s QB room is about to become even more stacked. The Buckeyes currently have two QBs committed in the class of 2017, including four-star Tate Martell, a high four-star prospect rated as the second best dual-threat QB in the country right now, along with Danny Clark, a high three-star commit. The Buckeyes also have Emory Jones committed for 2018, who just earned five-star status from Rivals, and projects to be in the four/five-star conversation across other services.

It’s tough to keep that many quarterbacks committed over multiple years. After all, you can generally only play one, and kids with elite offer sheets and recruiting profiles don’t typically want to wait three or four years. And while recruiting rankings are generally predictive of success, they’re a long way from foolproof, especially for quarterbacks. Not every high level recruit will be successful in college, and multiple mid-level three star types will have very solid college careers.

But even if Ohio State can’t quite keep everybody in the fold for the entirety of their college careers, having that many options speaks well for Ohio State’s chances of consistently fielding high level quarterback play, a key for competing for Big Ten championships and playoff births. The more elite recruits you have, the better chances you have of fielding elite players, and the Buckeyes will have a loaded room of potential elite QBs not just this season, but potentially for the next several seasons.

Given Urban Meyer’s track record with college quarterbacks, and the level of offensive line and skill talent that’s being assembled in Columbus, that could be bad news for the Big Ten for years to come.

Last week, the Associated Press released their Top 100 college football teams of the past 80 years. A total of seven Big Ten teams landed on the list, highlighted by Ohio State at No. 1 overall. The Buckeyes have ranked in the AP Poll for more weeks than any other team (852) during that span, including the most at No. 1 (105). This got me thinking, who are the best Big Ten teams in recent memory? Obviously, the 2014 Ohio State Buckeyes come to mind in recent memory, but what about before that? Welcome to your tri-weekly look at all things Ohio State recruiting. Let’s get started!

Trevon Grimes Update:

While all things continue to point toward Ohio State signing Grimes come February of next year, Grimes is still not showing his hand as to where he is going. He has set up a visit to Miami this week, and continues to keep things interesting. While I don’t expect that visit to do anything to sway the Buckeyes chances, it still gives Mark Richt and company a chance to put the full court press on Grimes and try and keep him in state. Grimes is set to make his college decision on August 24th and still all signs point to the Buckeyes.

Another 2019 Offer Out in Florida:

The Buckeyes continue to search the country for top end talent, and it seems that Florida is the top spot for Urban Meyer and company to go. The Buckeyes offered defensive back Patrick Surtain Jr., who is the son of former All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain Sr. Surtain lists 30 offers already as a sophomore, and is high on LSU, Florida State, Alabama, Clemson and Florida. The Buckeyes offered Surtain’s teammate Tyson Campbell last week.

Leonard Taylor Flip?

Many were surprised when Springfield, OH’s Leonard Taylor committed to Michigan earlier this year. I would venture to guess that his commitment is far from over, as he has been attending quite a few Buckeye events and has more scheduled in the future. According to Bill Kurlic at 247, Taylor is planning on coming to the Buckeyes games against Indiana (Oct. 8th) and again against Michigan (Nov 26th). He is also scheduled to be at Penn State when the Buckeyes travel there on October 22nd. Sounds like Taylor will be getting a lot of face time with the Buckeyes and their coaching staff. Taylor did not make the trip up north for the much talked about Michigan BBQ, and the tea leaves seem to point toward Taylor flipping at some point to the Buckeyes.

Speaking of the Michigan BBQ:

Michigan’s much talked about BBQ took place over the weekend and many Buckeye targets were in attendance. Darnay Holmes, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Jaylen Kelly-Powell and Markquese Bell all attended the event, and none of them committed while there.

Darnay Holmes still plans on visiting Ohio State for a game this season, and UCLA and Nebraska still remain the leaders for his services.

The Buckeyes should be set at WR if Tyjon Lindsey and Trevon Grimes come on board the 2017 class, but would they turn down Peoples-Jones if he wanted in? I don’t think they would, but I also don’t think he will end up in Columbus. I think he stays at home and attends Michigan along with Jaylen Kelly-Powell.

We talked a bit about Markquese Bell last week, and while he is planning on visiting the Buckeyes later this year, I don’t really see room for him in this class, and expect him to stay on the east coast at Rutgers.

Perhaps the biggest news coming out the the BBQ was that Michigan did not receive one verbal commit during the whole weekend. The one prospect that was projected to commit possibly was defensive lineman James Hudson. He will be announcing his commitment today, and per sources it looks like he will pick the Michigan State Spartans.

Another son of a NFL veteran could be coming to Columbus.

Sometimes athleticism just runs in the family. That is certainly the case for the latest class of 2018 prospect to receive an offer from the Ohio State Buckeyes coaching staff.

On Friday afternoon five-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. (Fort Lauderdale, FL / American Heritage), the son of former Miami Dolphin and Kansas City Chief Patrick Surtain, earned a chance to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray.

Very Honored and Blessed To Receive An Offer from The Ohio State University.... pic.twitter.com/JJFIqhTYQt

— PS2 (@SurtainJr) August 5, 2016

A junior at Fort Lauderdale’s American Heritage, the same program that produced current Buckeye wide receiver Torrance Gibson, Surtain Jr. has picked up over 30 scholarship offers to date. Other than OSU, LSU, Alabama, Clemson, Florida and Florida State are just some of the many programs pursuing the 6-foot-2, 180-pound defensive back at the moment.

When it comes to rankings, Patrick finds his name among the best in the junior class. Per the 247Sports Composite, Surtain Jr. is considered the top cornerback, and 13th overall prospect in the class of 2018.

The Buckeyes have had success in Florida as of late. Will Surtain Jr. end up in Columbus or will he stay closer to his home in the Sunshine State? Only time will tell. Stay with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

Brown sets Ohio State visit

Thad Matta and the Buckeyes basketball program will soon have one of their top remaining class of 2017 targets on campus for a visit.

Announcing his official visit plans via his Twitter page, five-star small forward Troy Brown (Las Vegas, NV / Centennial) will take a trip to OSU on Sept. 2 through Sept. 4. While in Columbus, the 6-foot-6, 215-pound Brown will have the chance to not only spend time with Matta and company, but watch J.T. Barrett, Sam Hubbard and the rest of the Ohio State football squad take on the Falcons of Bowling Green in front of over 100,000 screaming fans in the The ‘Shoe’.

Official Visits:

Ohio St: Sept 2 - 4 ‼️
Alabama: Sept 9 - 10
Oregon: Sept 23 - 25✅
Kansas: Sept 30 - Oct 2
Georgetown: Oct 5 - 7 ❕

— TroyBrownJr (@Troy_Brown33) August 6, 2016

Brown’s Ohio State trip will be followed up by campus visits to Alabama, Oregon, Kansas and Georgetown. Recently releasing a top eight, Arizona, UNLV and California, where many pegged as a possible landing spot for Brown throughout the process, look to now be on the outside looking in when it comes to Troy’s commitment.

Westerville South big man Kaleb Wesson is the Buckeyes loan class of 2017 pledge. Wanting to bring a wing into the fold, Brown’s game definitely fits what Ohio State is trying to put together on the court, but he isn’t the only small forward that has the Buckeyes attention. Massillon Jackson star senior Kyle Young is also considering Matta’s crew.

2019 PG wants OSU offer

After recently locking in offers from UMass and Rhode Island, a class of 2019 point guard has his eye on adding Ohio State to his growing list of scholarships.

“That’s my dream school. I grew up watching Ohio State football. My uncle was a big football fan and he used to force me to watch when he came over to the house. Also, D’Angelo Russell, just how he impacted that school,” sophomore standout Taelon Martin (Springfield, MA /Putnam Tech) told Josh Newman of SNYtv.

The Buckeyes aren’t the only program the 6-foot-1 guard, who suits up for Mass Rivals on the AAU circuit, hopes dishes him an offer soon. Like many basketball recruits, Martin would like Duke and Kentucky to give him a chance to play on the next level.

“It’s pretty impressive how they just send so many one-and-done guys to the league like that,” Martin shared with Newman on the Blue Devil and Wildcat programs.
