BTN Ohio State picked to win Big Ten in 2016 media preseason poll

Ohio State picked to win Big Ten in 2016 media preseason poll
Sean Merriman, BTN.com web editor via Big Ten Network

Cleveland.com released its sixth annual Big Ten preseason football poll Friday, and Ohio State was chosen as the Big Ten favorites in 2016. In a survey of 39 writers who cover Big Ten football, 27 predicted Ohio State as the Big Ten champ. Michigan received 11 votes, while Iowa, the favorite to win the West Division, received just one vote to win the Big Ten. Since 2011, when the Big Ten stopped publishing official preseason picks from journalists, cleveland.com has conducted the most official preseason Big Ten poll. What to make of this poll? We figured Ohio State would be

It’s gonna be a rockin’ time in Norman, Okla. on Sept. 17.

As the days of summer begin to wear away, that means one thing: football Saturdays are around the corner. While Ohio State’s landmark football camp happens tonight, there was some other noteworthy events surrounding the scarlet and gray.

“The Ohio State game will attract the largest crowd ever to see a football game in our state,”

– Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione in release by Mike Houck (Soonersports.com)

The University of Oklahoma made the announcement that their game on Sept. 17 featuring Ohio State is, indeed, a sellout.

It isn’t a surprise that this game, arguably the best of the non-conference matchups, is sold out so soon. Both programs have a track record of being the crème de la crèmes of the college football world, and this matchup pits the Sooners, who were in the College Football Playoff last season, against the Buckeyes, who won the national championship two seasons ago.

This battle of the titans in Norman, Okla. will feature the third meeting between the two schools – and first since 1983. The two prior games were top 10 showdowns, with the Sooners and Buckeyes winning one apiece.

The all-time winning percentages between the Buckeyes and Sooners are within thousandths of a point. Currently, Ohio State sits with a .722 percentage while Oklahoma holds a .720 percentage – good enough for third and fourth, respectively.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. Eastern (6:30 p.m. Central).

“[Corey] Smith is fully healthy and has been training hard to make a big impact on this year's Ohio State offense, but is hoping a change in his look helps him as well.”

– Alex Gleitman (Bucknuts)

With another year of eligibility granted, wide receiver Corey Smith is going to spice things up by changing his jersey to No. 5.

usa-today-8818237.jpg
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports
New Season, New Number: Corey Smith (84) will be rocking a new number when he’s sprinting down the field this season

Smith wore No.84 last season, before suffering a season ending leg injury at Indiana. Recently, the No.5 jersey has been donned by Braxton Miller – who missed the Ohio State national championship season after injuring his throwing shoulder.

According to Gleitman, the reason for Smith’s jersey switch was to go back to the number he wore at Buchtel High School.

Here’s hoping to a great season of pass catching for the Akron, Ohio native – and new wearer of the No.5 jersey.

“The Ohio State Swim Club women had their strongest showing of the night in the women’s 400 meter IM with Lindsey Clary and Meg Bailey dominating the final heat by over 11 seconds.”

– Ashleigh Shanley (Swimming World)

As temperatures pass the 100 mark in some parts of the country, the Ohio State club swim team is staying cool under pressure in the Speedo Central Zone Sectional Championships held in Columbus, Ohio.

On Wednesday, the first day of the event, Lindsey Clary had the best time in the women’s 800m freestyle, and was a key component in the Buckeyes’ 800m freestyle relay victory.

Yesterday, the Buckeyes continued their winning ways by grabbing the top two spots in the women’s 400m individual medley prelims. Clary had the best time in the event, clocking in at 4:51.51. In second place was fellow Buckeye club member Meg Bailey, who finished with a time of 4:54.86. The third place finisher of the preims had a final time greater than 4:57 – showing how good the Buckeye swim club were in the pool.

The events carry on for another day. If you’re interested in seeing how the swim club does, you can check the latest results at http://results.teamunify.com/ohossc/ .

540924420.0.jpg

After a few weeks of relative quiet on the recruiting news front, things could heat up again in a hurry for Ohio State, as tonight marks their biggest recruiting event of the offseason, Friday Night Lights.

Starting at 6 p.m. tonight, some of Ohio State’s biggest recruiting targets of the 2017, 2018 and 2019 classes, along with scores of others, will make their way to the Horseshoe for a huge camp extravaganza under the lights, and in front of Buckeye fans.

Will Ohio State add to their already historically strong 2017 class this weekend? What should fans expect? Anything can happen in the crazy world of recruiting, but here’s some of the big storylines to watch.

Will Amir Riep pick the Buckeyes?

Don’t expect a flurry of 2017 commitments, given the lack of many available spots, and the tough competition for those few openings. But we could still see a commitment on Saturday, the day after Friday Night Lights. 2017 defensive back Amir Riep, a four-star recruit and the third ranked player in the state of Ohio, will make his college decision at 1 p.m. at Colerain High School.

Riep’s Crystal Ball is nearly all Buckeyes right now, with Michigan State thought to be the closest competitor for his services, but given Ohio State’s numerous other blue chip defensive back recruits, this might not quite be the slam dunk it appears on paper. The fact that Riep is attending Friday Night Lights is considered a promising sign, and Ohio State would certainly be considered the favorite here, it might not be considered a lock. It may be interesting to see how Riep performs, and responds to fellow Buckeye targets and commitments, tonight.

Could Ohio State pick up any other 2017 commitments?

Ohio State will have no shortage of major 2017 targets in attendance. Five-star DE Chase Young, from my new hometown of Hyattsville, MD, will be there, along with a highly regarded trio of elite WR targets, WR Trevon Grimes, Tyjon Lindsey and Jaylen Harris.

Anything can happen in recruiting, especially in higher-profile event like Friday Night Lights, but many of Ohio State’s other big targets have commitment dates set for later in this year, and another 2017 commitment would be a mild surprise. Not to say that it can’t happen, but that it would be somewhat unexpected.

What about 2018?

This late in the summer, most of the heavy lifting for the 2017 class is already done. A major focus for these events is to get future recruits on campus, and get them thinking more about Ohio State.

The Buckeyes don’t have a commitment for the 2018 class yet, which seems a teensy bit unusual, but that might change tonight or tomorrow. Top QB target, and blue-chipper Emory Jones will be there, and he was previously thought to be close to pulling the trigger for the Buckeyes. Elite QBs tend to commit a little earlier than other positions, and if the Buckeyes need a centerpiece for the 2018 class, they could do a lot worse than landing an excellent QB.

Other big names to watch could be high profile in-state linebackers Christopher Oats and Dallas Gant. Both are already getting four-star buzz in the recruiting rankings and are slotted near the top of what should be another solid Ohio class of prospects.

There are two other local, elite prospects that Ohio State has made major priorities that should be at the event. RB Jaelen Gill, a Columbus kid that has already risen to one of the top recruits in the country for 2018, and Jackson Carman, a five-star offensive lineman from Fairfield, OH. Either pulling the trigger today would be a little surprising, but getting them on campus again couldn’t hurt.

Watch for Ohio State to make some offers too

Short of commitments, don’t be surprised if Ohio State offers more, perhaps many more players in the 2018 and 2019 classes, now that they get another chance at evaluation and coaching.

1956-150x150.jpg

In our pursuit to bring to focus some of the great past names of athletics from The Ohio State University in Making the List, often names are missed – even intended to bring out at another time … but the grand tool of forgetfulness arrives and good intent vanishes as it arrives to another worthy name.

This week’s choice is one of those names.

Peter George was a weightlifter born in Akron, Ohio back when the Market crashed – 1929. He had always been a strong kid. At the tender age of 15 he would be the first of that age to clean and jerk 300 lbs. He would also be the youngest senior state (Ohio) champion at the tender age of 14 & ½. By the time he was 17 he won the World Championship.

Weightlifting simply never caught on as a varsity sport in college, which includes our lovely corner of Heaven – The Ohio State University. Club sports though have a tendency to gather a following too though. Pete began to participate through intramurals and the weightlifting club while in Columbus. As a Dental Student in 1952-56 Pete managed to make a notable name for himself in this highly competitive, yet unnoticed sport.
Pete would go on to compete further into world competition before and after arriving in Columbus by making Team USA and representing America in the 1948 Summer Olympics in London in the Men’s middleweight where he’d win silver. In 1952’s Summer Olympics in Helsinki he would win Gold – also in the Men’s middleweight. And in 1956 in Melbourne – Men’s middleweight – he would take home the silver again.

Pete’s world achievements did not yield in those frames of time. He won five World Championships in 1947, 1951, 1953, 1954, and 1955. He placed second at the World Championships in 1949, and 1950 – this made for a total of 10 medals in World and Olympic competition. He would also be the proud owner of four world records, three of which were in the clean and jerk, and one in the total.

Pete would graduate from The Ohio State University and move to Hawaii where he would have a successful dental practice for many years.

Peter George is a member of a sport that we often recognize but hardly think of. Weightlifting is a good and clean sport. I recall watching Olympic events back when I was a child and being tremendously impressed. It even made me use some of my paper route money to buy weights, along with a bench – that, of course, ended up being a perfect clothes hanger. It is a tough sport and dedication is completely essential – as it is in anything worth its value.

Pete George is more than deserving to be recognized as a Great Buckeye. In the time-frame allotted his prime – in a sport that we all watch in awe, he was absolutely dominant. After these years we would learn of a humble man from Ohio now in Hawaii with a huge list of patients – all wanting the Gentle Giant to fix their dental issues. I am pleased that I came across Pete George’s name and accomplishments. I am even more pleased to add him to our wall of the greats of Making the List.

Cleveland.com’s poll likes the Buckeyes. Is that a good thing, though?

If you’re unacquainted, the Big Ten doesn’t do a preseason media poll like most of the other conferences in college football. For each of the past six years, Cleveland.com, led by the inimitable Doug Lesmerises, have filled that void by commissioning one of their own.

Despite Michigan being the most heavily bet team to win the national championship in the country, Big Ten scribes like Urban Meyer’s young Ohio State Buckeyes to hold up the trophy when everything’s said and done in Indianapolis the first Saturday in December. The Bucks are expected to edge Michigan to win the East then prevail over last year’s West champions, Iowa.

While this would ordinarily be reason for excitement for OSU fans, to loosely paraphrase Ohio State grad R.L. Stein, readers beware: the Cleveland.com poll has never correctly predicted the Big Ten champions even one time in its six years of existence.

As Cavs fans found out this past summer though, all streaks are made to end eventually, right?

You can see the full voting breakdown at Cleveland.com

2016 Friday Night Lights Preview

riep-150x150.jpg

Friday Night Lights has become an annual staple since Urban Meyer came to Columbus, and the Buckeyes will once again host a slew of top talent from across the nation at the Horseshoe tonight. Let’s take a look at who will be there and if we can expect any commitments out of the group.

Tate Martell, Josh Myers, Brendon White, Jerron Cage, Danny Clark, and Antjuan Simmons are among the currently-committed Buckeyes who will be in attendance. These guys will certainly have their recruiting hats on trying to sway guys to pick the Scarlet and Grey.

Martell will especially be in the ear of his former high school teammate Tyjon Lindsey to convince him to join the top class in the nation with him. Martell and Lindsey played at Bishop-Gorman High School together before Lindsey left for Calabasas this year. They remain close friends, and I’m sure playing together again has crossed their minds. Lindsey still seems torn between Ohio State and Nebraska – he’s made multiple unofficial visits to the Cornhuskers – so Martell might be key to getting him to Columbus.

Trevon Grimes will also be in town this weekend. Though he won’t officially decide until August, most experts have him pegged as a done deal to Ohio State. I expect Martell to try to form a connection with Grimes – if he hasn’t already – and more or less lock up Grimes’ decision before he leaves Friday Night Lights.

Jaylen Harris, from Cleveland Heights, will also participate on Friday night. He has an offer from Ohio State, but with the number situation as tight as it is, the possibility of the Buckeyes landing Lindsey and Grimes, and an outside shot at Donovan Peoples-Jones, it’s unlikely Harris will be a part of the 2017 recruiting class.

Like their offensive teammates, the defensive commitments will be buttering up the uncommitted prospects on their side of the ball. Amir Riep will make his decision on Saturday after camping Friday night. Most have him pegged to pick the Buckeyes – 96% of the crystal balls point towards Columbus. He canceled his visits to Alabama and Michigan State this week, so all signs point to him picking the Buckeyes Saturday at 1pm. He would be commitment #15 in the class of 2017 unless someone else beats him to the punch.

Chase Young, the highly touted defensive end out of Maryland, is another five-star prospect who is high on the Buckeyes. Right now it looks to be a choice between the Buckeyes and the Terrapins, and having him on campus again around many future and past Buckeyes will surely help our case. Although I think his recruitment drags out a bit longer, I do see him being a part of this Ohio State class in the end.

Lamont Wade and Darnay Holmes are two guys who might’ve been Buckeyes if there were more scholarships to go around. Wade considered committing a while back, but he held off due to the uncertainty surrounding his ability to enroll early. Now it looks like he’s probably off to Happy Valley. Holmes plays with Tyjon Lindsey at Calabasas, and while he likes Ohio State, I think he stays out west and picks UCLA or Stanford. There’s an outside chance, however, that Lindsay and Holmes are a package deal to Nebraska, since they’ve both visited there quite a few times and have the Huskers high on their lists. There is also the possibility that Shaun Wade, a current commit at defensive back, ends up not being a part of this class. Then Holmes and Lindsay could be a package deal to Ohio State.

With the 2017 getting full, let’s turn our attention to the kids from 2018 and beyond who will be at Friday Night Lights.

The main story line for me is the quarterback for the 2018 class. Emory Jones is the guy. He knows it, and I expect him to pick the Buckeyes any minute. He could commit this weekend while at Friday Night Lights, but I expect this to drag out a bit longer. Once that’s a done deal, I believe the Buckeyes will be done at quarterback for 2018. If Jones decides to go to Tennessee instead, then Ohio State will have to look elsewhere for a quarterback.

Quite a few running backs from the class of 2018 will be on hand, and the one to keep an eye on is Jaelen Gill. He hails from Westerville, Ohio, and most believe he will end up in Scarlet and Grey. Brian Snead and T.J. Pledger are two more backs who will be on hand; both have offers from Ohio State, but Snead is the most likely to end up at Ohio State. Pledger is making it interesting, however, because he just visited last week, and now he’s back again to camp. Visiting a school twice on your own dime indicates some serious interest in the program. I don’t think any of these three will commit this weekend, but I do expect Gill to be a part of this class down the road.

There will also be a lot of talented wide receivers in the ‘Shoe Friday. Jermaine Eskridge, L’Christian Smith, Joseph Scates, and Paul Woods are some of the names expected to be in attendance. Eskridge is from Tampa, Florida, and right now his crystal ball predictions have him 50/50 to Kentucky and Florida. Smith, from Dayton, holds 11 offers currently, and most expect him to end up at Ohio State. The bigger question, however, is what position he’ll play in college. Bill Greene over at Scout sees him more as a tight end at the collegiate level, but Smith might want to stay at receiver. That could complicate his recruitment if the Buckeyes see him as a tight end. Scates and Woods don’t hold offers from Ohio State yet, so both will be trying to prove they deserve one.

Two of the highest-rated tight ends of the class of 2018 will be in attendance in Zack Kuntz and Jeremy Ruckert. Recently, they’ve both been busy visiting programs like Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida State. After probably skipping a tight end in 2017, Ohio State will be going hard to land a top flight athlete in this class. I’m not sure the Buckeyes will land Kuntz or Ruckert, but if they convince L’ Christian Smith to be a tight end at the college level, they may have their guy.

The biggest offensive lineman who’s committed to Friday Night Lights is Jack Carman, and he’s a big one at that. Carman is a consensus five-star player, and the Buckeyes currently lead in his recruitment. It’s certainly possible he decides to become a Buckeye this weekend, as all the crystal ball predictions line up with Ohio State so far. I don’t see him making the pledge this weekend, however, but I think a decision for the Buckeyes is probably in the cards. Blaine Scott another 2018 offensive lineman has committed to attending Friday Night Lights, but will not be participating. He does not hold an Ohio State offer yet, but I do expect that to change, and it could happen tonight.

On the defensive line, the Buckeyes will see Leonard Taylor for the second time since he committed to the Wolverines. Taylor hasn’t been back to Michigan since he committed, and visiting Ohio State twice shows he’s probably got some interest left in the Buckeyes. I don’t think he’d be wearing Ohio State clothes and visiting multiple times if there wasn’t some legitimate interest, and I think this one could end up in Ohio State’s favor down the line.

Matthew Jones, the big defensive tackle from New York, will also be camping this weekend. He’s high on the Buckeyes, and 100% of the crystal ball predictions have him coming to Ohio State right now. Alex Reigelsperger and Aeneas Hawkins are two Ohio kids who will be in attendance looking to receive an offer. Dallas Gant and Christopher Oats, two huge in-state targets, will be in camp as well. Both have Ohio State offers, and both are projected to be in the Buckeye class of 2018. Oats is one to watch this weekend for a possible early commitment.

At defensive back, the Buckeyes will see Big Ten legacy prospect Houston Griffith, the son of Big Ten analyst and former Illinois star Howard Griffith. Griffith has been on a bit of a recruiting hot streak lately. He’s picked up a lot of offers recently, and he’s crystal-balled to Notre Dame; however, he’s transferring to the IMG Academy this fall for football, and Ohio State has quite a presence down there.

Xavier Henderson, out of Pickerington, is a defensive back who will be working hard to convince the Buckeyes he is offer worthy. I believe he’ll snag an offer from the Buckeyes, and they’ll battle Michigan State and Kentucky for his services.

Some 2019 and 2020 kids will also be in attendance. Xavier Goldsmith plays at Cass Tech in Michigan, and Ohio State is really familiar with that program. Expect some interest from the Buckeyes once the focus turns toward 2019. Antonio Alfano is from New Jersey, and, like Goldsmith, does not hold an offer from the Buckeyes yet. Miquan Grace is 14-year-old freshman cornerback who already has offers from Kentucky and Cincinnati. He’s already started making trips to colleges and is expected to be one of the top athletes in the class of 2020. All three of these guys will be looking to earn offers this weekend while camping at OSU.

Friday Night lights is always a big deal for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes, and this year is no different. Ohio State is recruiting on a level unseen in Columbus, and the Buckeyes will have some of the top prospects in the nation attending this camp to build relationships and see what the Ohio State brand is all about. We’ve seen some commitments out of this camp before, and I expect to see some this weekend as well. Not counting Amir Riep, who I think will select the Buckeyes on Saturday, I see at least two other kids publically committing this weekend. A few more will probably issue their silent pledges and wait for their announcement date. As always, Friday Night Lights will be enjoyable and exciting if you are a fan of Ohio State football and recruiting.

The marquee Buckeye camp happens tonight

Grimes makes it to Columbus

When it comes to pass catchers in this years recruiting class, one of the top targets at the position for the Buckeyes is undoubtedly 2017 wide receiver Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas). Grimes has been a prospect that Ohio State has pursued for quiet some time and this weekend, the opportunity has arrived for Head Coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes to make a big impression on the 6-foot-3, 202-pounder.

#BuckeyeNation I will be in Columbus at 4:30 ✈️ #FridayNightLights pic.twitter.com/2LWJdcLB4k

— GrimeTime™ (@TrevonGrimes7) July 21, 2016

On Thursday afternoon, the Fort Lauderdale native posted a picture on Twitter of his plane ticket to The Buckeye State; he eventually arrived in Columbus on Thursday evening – as Friday Night Lights happens tonight.

Grimes, currently graded as the fourth best wide receiver in the class, will be making his first visit to the campus since he was a freshman. Right now, all signs point to Ohio State being in great position with the 20th overall player in this 2017 class and tonight, they have a chance to put themselves in a better spot for Grimes.

Grimes currently intends to make his collegiate decision in just over one month on August 24. Schools also in the mix for The Sunshine State standout include Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Miami (FL).

Bell coming for FNL

A surprise addition to the always loaded Friday Night Lights visitor list came about on Thursday morning. Athlete of the 2017 class, Markquese Bell (Bridgeton, NJ / Bridgeton) announced his presence at the event just before noon.

Will be attending FNL at Ohio state tomorrow #GoBucks⭕⭕

— I C E ❄️ (@MarkqueseB) July 21, 2016

Bell is currently graded as the 178th overall prospect in the class and is pegged as a four-star recruit. Additionally, he stands at 6-foot-3 and 194 pounds while holding the title as the third best player from the state of New Jersey – and is slotted as the sixth best athlete for 2017.

We’ll see if the Buckeyes can make a move for Bell. As of now, Clemson, Michigan and Rutgers are the three schools that have had predictions casted in their favor for Bell.

Munford excited for FNL

Sticking to this years recruiting class, Ohio State currently hold pledges from 2017 offensive tackle Jake Moretti (Arvada, CO /Pomona) and Josh Myers (Miamisburg, OH / Miamisburg).

However, that’s not stopping one in-state prospect from coming to Ohio Stadium with a chip on his shoulder in hopes to impress the Buckeyes coaching staff.

2017 OT Thayer Munford (Massillon, OH / Washington), a massive 6-foot-5, 339-pounder, has yet to receive an offer from Ohio State, but he is still excited about tonight’s Friday Night Lights challenge in which he will surely compete.

I cant wait to do this Friday Night Camp at Ohio State tomorrow #BuckeyeNation

— Thayer Munford6️⃣4️⃣ (@Big_Grizze62) July 21, 2016

Would it be all that surprising if the three-star prospect landed an offer with a good performance at the camp? Not really. However, with two tackles already in the fold and 2017 offensive guard Wyatt Davis (Bellflower, CA /St. John Bosco), who can probably play anywhere along the offensive line, the likelihood of Munford ultimately becoming a Buckeye seems slim.

For now, it’s Pittsburgh who is favored on the 247Sports Crystal Ball to land the mammoth quarterback protector.

The former Ohio State quarterback has to report to Buffalo Bills training camp next Thursday.

Cardale Jones may have to report with the rest of the Buffalo Bills rookies to training camp in a week, but the former Ohio State quarterback took some time on Wednesday night to help the Make-A-Wish foundation. Rob Wells of WSYX ABC 6 in Columbus was at L.E.P.D Firearms and Range last night as Cardale Jones met with Austin Smith. The 18-year old from Grove City is battling Hodgkin's lymphoma and his wish through the Make-A-Wish foundation was go to the shooting range with Jones.

When asked by doctors what his wish through the foundation would be, Smith was hesitant to ask for anything, feeling there were others out there who deserved it more. While Jones may have been nicknamed "12 Gauge" for his arm, he met his match in the shooting range with Smith. Even though the two had only limited time to spend together last night, Jones says the friendship between the two will stretch long into the future.

When @NFL rookies see their #Madden17 ratings for the first time

— EA SPORTS Madden NFL (@EAMaddenNFL) July 20, 2016

While over the past few months not only have a lot of rookies in the NFL realized their dream of being drafted along with signing their first NFL contract, finding out their Madden ratings might be the highlight of their time in the professional ranks so far. Ohio State is well represented in this year's rookie rankings, with Ezekiel Elliott and Joey Bosa being included in EA Sports' rankings of the top-five rookies in Madden this year. Elliott, who was given an 80 overall rating, is ranked second, just behind Jacksonville cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Defensive end Joey Bosa was given the fifth best rating amongst rookies, with Baltimore offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley and Tampa Bay kicker Roberto Aguayo in between Elliott and Bosa.

Even though most players are elated that it's their first time officially being in the popular football game, many weren't quite happy with their rating. Buffalo Bills quarterback Cardale Jones was expecting his throwing power to be rated at 103, and upon finding out he was only given a 96 rating he said the game must have a glitch. Houston Texans wide receiver Braxton Miller was also asked to predict his juke rating in the video game, and after guessing he'd be given a 99, he was told he was only rated at 88. For some the lower than expected ratings can give them a little extra juice on the field to try and saw the Madden developers to up their ratings throughout the season.

"These past couple of weeks have been really special because it's starting to sink in a little bit when you start preparing for the speech. But just the reaction of my teammates, everywhere you go you're known as a Hall of Famer now."

- Former Ohio State offensive tackle Orlando Pace via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

After a 13-year NFL career, in which he was named to the Pro Bowl seven times, it wasn't a question as to if former Ohio State offensive tackle Orlando Pace would be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but when. Last year Pace missed out on being a first-ballot Hall of Famer, but the night before this year's Super Bowl he was selected to take his place amongst pro football's greatest players. On August 6th, Pace will be inducted in Canton to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, along with Brett Favre, Tony Dungy, the late Ken Stabler, and four others.

It seemed early on that Pace was destined for greatness, as he became just the second true freshman ever to start for the Buckeyes. Along with being named a two-time consensus first-team All-American at Ohio State, Pace also won the Lombardi Award in 1995 and 1996, along with the Outland Trophy in 1996. After being taken with the first overall pick in the 1997 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, Pace continued his dominant play at the professional level. Pace's work on the offensive line is a big reason why the Rams were able to win Super Bowl XXXIV. Now in just a few short weeks "The Pancake Man" will be inducted by his son to take his place amongst the elites of pro football.

"We are very excited about the incoming class of players who we feel will address the positional needs required for the 2016 team. This is a very talented group of players, but also young men who will represent Ohio State in the highest standard possible in the classroom and community."

- Ohio State men's soccer head coach John Bluem via Edward Sutelan, The Lantern

It has been nearly a decade since the Ohio State men's soccer team narrowly lost out on winning a NCAA Championship, losing to Wake Forest in the title game in 2007. Since then the Buckeyes have made it to the NCAA Tournament five times, but have failed to advance beyond the third round. Last year saw the Buckeyes take home the Big Ten regular season title before they fell to Stanford 3-1 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. This year Ohio State could be primed for a deeper run in the tournament, as they have brought in the highest ranked recruiting class in school history.

The star of this year's recruiting class is defenseman Andrew Lombard, who transferred from Northeastern University. In 2015 Lombard was named to the under-20 U.S. National Team, and should help to bring some strength and stability to the Ohio State backline. Midfielder Leo Kossaka previously played for Canada's under-17 National Team, and was offered a contract to join the Montreal Impact of the MLS before deciding to come to Ohio State. Players from Ohio will make up five spots of this year's recruiting class, with three of them hailing from the Dublin area. Ohio State's recruiting class has been ranked fourth best in the country according to College Soccer News, giving the Buckeyes a top-10 ranked class for the second consecutive year.

Numbers, they are everywhere.

Here we are counting down the days until college football returns to Columbus – 43. How many wins does Urban Meyer have in his first four years at the helm of Ohio State? 50.

But, at the time Meyer jumped into the role as the man roaming the sidelines on Saturdays, one number casted a dark cloud over the entire Buckeye nation: the one year bowl ban.

With no chance of a postseason, the 2012 campaign would consist of 12 games. No more, no less.

When No. 18 Ohio State took the field against Miami (OH), nobody realized what was about to manifest in just four years time: the winningest senior class in Ohio State history.

And all jump started by the 24th man to be named head coach of the Buckeyes.

Let’s start off chronicling the most interest and important wins of Meyer’s time at Ohio State, leading up to this year’s kickoff against Bowling Green.

Ryder, Party of One

In Ohio State’s history, only one coach began his tenure at Ohio State taking an ‘L’. To find that one lone coach, the football almanac has to be flipped all the way to the year 1892, where Jack Ryder holds the unfortunate honor. It wasn’t even a close defeat – the Buckeyes lost to Oberlin, 40-4. According to the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia, here are the results from each head coach's first game.

Year Coach First team faced as OSU coach Result
1890 Alexander S. Lilley at Ohio Wesleyan W, 20-14
1892 Jack Ryder at Oberlin L, 40-4
1896 Charles A. Hickey Ohio Medical W, 24-0
1897 David F.Edwards Ohio Medical W, 6-0
1899 John B. Eckstorm Otterbein W, 30-0
1902 Perry Hale Otterbein W, 5-0
1904 E.R. Sweetland Otterbein W, 34-0
1906 A.E. Herrnstein Otterbein W, 41-0
1910 Howard Jones Otterbein W, 14-5
1911 Harry Vaughn Otterbein W, 6-0
1912 John R. Richards at Otterbein W, 55-0
1913 John Wilce Ohio Wesleyan W, 58-0
1929 Sam S. Willaman Wittenberg W, 19-0
1934 Francis Schmidt Indiana W, 33-0
1941 Paul Brown Missouri W, 12-7
1944 Carroll Widdoes Missouri W, 54-0
1946 Paul O. Bixler Missouri T, 13-13
1947 Wesley E. Fesler Missouri W, 13-7
1951 Woody Hayes SMU W, 7-0
1979 Earle Bruce Syracuse W, 31-8
1988 John Cooper Syracuse W, 26-9
2001 Jim Tressel Akron W, 28-14
2011 Luke Fickell Akron W, 42-0
With Meyer starting off with an in-state opponent, history, though over 100 years apart, couldn’t be repeated.
Make The Great State of Ohio Proud

Ahh, the slogan that defined Meyer’s return to Ohio. That seven word phrase carried weight, as eight assistant coaches had some sort of tie to the Buckeye State.

Name Location in Ohio
Kerry Coombs Colerain
Stan Drayton Cleveland
Luke Fickell Columbus
Tom Herman Cincinnati
Tim Hinton Amanda
Zach Smith Columbus
Mike Vrabel Akron
Ed Warinner Strasburg

The Buckeye ties were even stronger with Fickell and Vrabel, as they both played for the scarlet and gray in the 1990s.

The Program Cover

It seemed natural that Meyer would be on the front cover of the souvenir gameday program.

While also on the gameday poster (included with the program), Urban Meyer was joined by a few other notable Buckeyes from the 2012 team. Joel Hale, Verlon Reed, Doran Grant and Devin Smith found their way onto the poster.

Remember these faces?

The Game Against Miami (OH) [aka The One With the Catch]

The Urban Meyer tenure at Ohio State officially began at noon on Sept. 1, 2012. However, the Buckeyes weren’t the first team on the board; an uneventful first quarter ended with the Redhawks up 3-0.

Curmudgeons of the world (probably) believed that this would be the demise of Ohio State football. A 6-7 campaign in 2011 was being met with a sluggish first quarter start against a MAC opponent to open the 2012 season.

At the time of this game, the Buckeyes hadn’t lost a home game to start the season since 1978, they haven’t lost an opening game since Miami (FL) in 1999 and survived the first game post Tressel in 2011 with a win. Things would eventually click.

The click came with highlight reel play from none other than sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller.

Miller and Devin Smith were going to ensure that the season was going to be just fine – while creating one of the best catch sequences of recent memory

And just like that, order was restored. Remember how glorious it was when Braxton was throwing deep balls into Devin-Smith-only-territory?

The Buckeyes wouldn’t look back, as they piled on 21 second quarter points en route to a 56-21 victory to start the Urban Meyer reign in the right direction.

Here are some of the stats from the first Meyer win at Ohio State

Name Passing Yards Completion-Attempts TD/INT
Miller, Braxton 207 14-24 2/0
Guiton, Kenny 37 5-9 0/0

Name Rushing Yards Attempts TDs
Miller, Braxton 161 17 1
Hyde, Carlos 82 17 2
Dunn, Bri'onte 31 7 1

It seemed so long ago, but Carlos Hyde was part of the Urban Renewal process in Columbus, OH. In the 2011 campaign, Hyde rushed for 566 yards and six touchdowns; he also averaged 43.5 yards per contest. Those numbers would be increased in the two years Hyde spent with Meyer.

What was happening in the college football world

  • This was the week where the Big Ten had a near identity crisis. First, Iowa defeated MAC member Northern Illinois , 18-17, behind a nine point surge in the fourth quarter. Moving on, No. 12 Wisconsin escaped with a 26-21 win against... Northern Iowa. Montee Ball carried the rock 32 times, en route to carrying the Badgers to victory. Michigan State held of Boise State, 17-13, while brother No. 8 Michigan got thumped by No. 2 Alabama, 41-14.
  • Marcus Lattimore took home SEC Player of the Week honors for his valiant performance against Vanderbilt. Due to the 110 yards and two touchdowns, No. 9 South Carolina opened up their season with a win, 17-13.
  • Matt Barkley was launching rainbow touchdowns to Marquise Lee, as No. 1 USC took down Hawai’i, 49-10. Barkley ended up collecting 372 yards of real estate through passing, while Silas Redd – a transfer from Penn State – put 56 yards on the ground while collecting a touchdown. This USC team was looking for a national championship. Was this the end of the Pete Carroll Era, or was it the start of Sarks? Well, it was neither. Lane Kiffin was the coach.
Current Events during Sept. 1, 2012

  • Famed actor Michael Clarke Duncan passed away. Duncan was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role of John Coffey in The Green Mile. Also, Duncan played one year of basketball at Alcorn State before making the jump to Hollywood.
  • The No. 1 song in America was ‘We Are Never Getting Back Together’ by Taylor Swift. While her Red album boasted huge sales, the next album on the horizon (1989) was about to sweep the country by storm.
  • Scientists in Australia perform the first implementation of a bionic eye on a patient. The eye contained 24 electrodes, an enabled the patient to once again have some ability at sight.
