Fighting for a ring, who did enough to pick up your vote this time around?

Another week, another Land-Grant Holy Land MVP for future Buckeye quarterback Tate Martell.

Leading his Bishop Gorman (NV) squad past Arbor View last Saturday evening, Martell accounted for 268 passing yards and five touchdowns to once again get the Gaels in the State title game.

Picking up 49% of your votes last week, Martell walked away with the MVP award over his soon-to-be Buckeye teammates Brendon White (17%), Wyatt Davis (16%), Shaun Wade (13%), and Haskell Garrett (5%).

Martell wasn’t the only Ohio State commit to help his team earn a shot a championship. Back at it this weekend, which Buckeye pledge did enough to grab your MVP vote?

The poll is now open. Let your voice be heard and vote:

Tate Martell

In the Nevada State Championship, Martell and Bishop Gorman rolled over a very solid Liberty High team.

In the 84-8 blowout win, Martell wasn’t needed much in the second half, but still put together some very solid numbers to lead the Gaels to their 54th straight win and eighth consecutive state title. Completing 7 of 8 passing attempts, the U.S. Army All-American accounted for 139 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for another 81 yards and three scores on the ground in the big win.

Haskell Garrett

Like Martell, the Gaels defense played a massive part in Bishop Gorman picking up another state title victory on Saturday.

Up front, the future Buckeye defensive tackle showed why he’s considered one of the top lineman in 2017 class. Fighting off double teams most of the night, Garrett ended the game against Liberty with 5 total tackles including two for a loss.

Wyatt Davis

Davis and St. John Bosco (CA) came to play on Friday night.

After falling to Mater Dei (CA) in championship game the last two season, St. John Bosco bounced back to get the win over the Monarchs, 42-28.

Playing guard instead of tackle for Bosco, Davis helped block the Braves offense to around 300 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground in the runaway victory.

Baron Browning

Nearly 24 hours after announcing his verbal commitment to Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes, five-star outside linebacker Baron Browning was back on the field trying to get his Kennedale (TX) squad one step closer to a ring.

Taking on Van High, Browning and Kennedale battled back from down 14 to pick up the win over the Vandals, 34-28 for a trip to the state semifinals.

Picking off a Van High pass in the first half, Browning rumbled 25 yards to the endzone for a Kennedale score to only have the touchdown neglected due to a clip in the back during the return.

After his near touchdown, the latest Buckeye pledge took a little time out to show some love to members of Buckeye Nation.

1st time seeing @baronbrwnng play. He's 4real! Yesterday, he commits to @Buckeyes today he gets a #Pick6 and shows OSU love. @11W @ihss_dfw pic.twitter.com/whv1tLInQW

— David Watkins (@dwatkinsNBC5) December 3, 2016
Blake Haubeil

The future Buckeye kicker didn’t score a touchdown, but still put some points up on the board for Canisius (NY) on Sunday afternoon against Cardinal Hayes.

One of the senior leaders for Canisius, Haubeil didn’t have his best game of the season. The three-star prospect connected on all six of his extra points, but missed a 48 yard field goal, and had 47 yarder blocked to help switch the momentum to Cardinal Hayes.

While the block led to a Cardinal Hayes scoring drive that pushed them in front, the Crusaders bounced back in the final minutes of the game to win the New York State Catholic Final, 50-44.

Poll
Which future Buckeye is your MVP of the week?

  • Tate Martell
  • Haskell Garrett
  • Wyatt Davis
  • Baron Browning

The Bearcats didn’t make a field goal in the fourth quarter, and only three in the entire second half, as the Buckeyes’ defense dominated.

For the first 17 minutes, the Ohio State women’s basketball team appeared to be in danger of dropping its third straight game. After trailing visiting Cincinnati by 11 points with three minutes remaining in the first half, the Buckeyes surged on both ends of the floor, and cruised to an 80-38 win.

Ohio State shot 65.6 percent in the second half, while suffocating the Bearcats’ offense to the tune of just three made field goals, none in the fourth quarter, and 10 points after halftime.

Kelsey Mitchell led the Buckeyes with 23 points, and now sits just 23 away from eclipsing the 2,000-point mark in her career. Every player that saw action scored at least three points for head coach Kevin MCGuff.

For Cincinnati, Shanice Johnson had a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 17 rebounds in the losing effort.

Ohio State started the game off listless and sloppy, missing its first seven shots from the field and eight of its first ten. Cincinnati wasn’t much better, though, going 3-for-12 in the early going, and at the midway point in the first quarter, the Bearcats held an 8-5 lead.

Three-pointers from Cincinnati’s Johnson and Maya Benham extended the lead, and after one the Bearcats were ahead 18-12. Ohio State shot just 4-for-17 (23.5 percent).

The poor shooting by both sides continued into the second quarter, and Cincinnati stretched the lead out to 24-17 halfway through. The Buckeyes went 5-for-17 in the frame, and had a scoring drought of just under four minutes, but rebounded to finish on a 10-0 run as the Bearcats failed to score for the final 3:11.

Cincinnati’s lead was just 28-27 heading into the locker room.

For the half, Ohio State was 9-for-34 (26.5 percent) shooting, with Mitchell’s 11 points pacing the scoring. Cincinnati’s 11-for-35 (31.4 percent) was only slightly better, with Johnson’s nine points leading the way.

The Buckeyes kept the momentum going in the third quarter, starting with a 12-0 run to claim its first lead of the game at 39-28. The Bearcats missed their first 11 shots, with their scoreless drought expanding to over nine minutes of game time.

Mitchell capped an eight-point quarter with a head-on three-point make from about five feet behind the arc to give Ohio State a 51-37 advantage heading to the final quarter. Cincinnati hit just three field goals in the third, and was outscored 24-9.

Another scoring drought for the Bearcats blew things open, as the Buckeyes dominated the fourth quarter with a 29-1.

Three-pointers by Mitchell, Asia Doss, Sierra Calhoun, and Jensen Caretti had the home crowd getting loud, as Ohio State cruised the rest of the way.

The Buckeyes will be back in action on Wednesday in Columbus, as they host Southern University. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. and can be streamed live on BTN Plus.

usa_today_9713660.0.jpeg

The Buckeyes’ unforeseen bye week paid off, too.

So, No. 3 Ohio State will play No. 2 Clemson in one of the College Football Playoff semifinals. This accomplishment reinforces what all of us who follow the Buckeyes closely already knew: they can really coach, and they can really recruit. Who would have thought that after jettisoning one of the most impressive NFL draft classes ever that Ohio State would simply reload, navigate the program’s most arduous schedule in years, and qualify for the playoff.

And who woulda thunk that the 2016 Buckeyes would make the playoff, but the 2015 squad that had 10 players selected in the first 100 selections of draft and enjoyed a much easier schedule would miss out on college football’s final four?

Life’s a trip, man.

The Buckeyes now turn their attention to Clemson, who racked up 576 yards of offense in their 40-35 victory over the Scarlet and Gray in the 2014 Orange Bowl. That game doubled as the final game in for Ohio State’s pre-Chris Ash era pass defense, which surrendered 378 passing yards and five touchdowns to Tajh Boyd and 227 receiving yards to Sammy Watkins. Dark times, indeed.

On to the rankings!

1. Unexpected bye weeks

Instead of playing in Indianapolis following back-to-back sledgehammer games against Michigan State and Michigan, the Buckeyes were able to able rest their players and send their coaches out recruiting, all the while still making the playoff. Not a bad gig if you can have it.

On a strange-but-true note that was recently pointed out by Cleveland.com, Ohio State has lost two regular-season conference games over the past five seasons—and both of the defeats have resulted in the Buckeyes missing the Big Ten Championship Game despite 39 victories over that same span. Ohio State also went 8-0 in Big Ten play in 2012 but missed out on a trip to Indianapolis because of NCAA sanctions.

Again, life’s a trip, man.

2. The Big Ten East

The 2016 college football season will be remembered for a lot of things—with today’s semi-controversial selection of the latest iteration of the College Football Playoff likely earning the No. 1 slot on a such a list—but high upon that same register should be that 2016 was also the year that the Big Ten’s East division wrestled away the title of the sport’s best division from the SEC West, even if history may reveal that to be a one-year anomaly. (I wouldn’t bet on that, but we’ll see.) The Big Ten East sported half of the committee’s top six teams, meaning that in a hypothetical world where an 8-team playoff existed, the East would easily have had three teams in the playoff.

Narrowing the scope to the Big Ten itself, the East further increased its dominance over the West by claiming the conference’s inter-conference crown for the third year running, with Penn State following Ohio State in 2014 and Michigan State in 2015. With Penn State’s rise and Michigan State’s sustained run of excellence prior to this year, the gap between the two divisions is only getting wider. Sure, the East has Rutgers, the conference laughingstock—let us not forget that the West has a pair of court jesters in Purdue and Illinois, though—but Indiana has gained respectability in recent years (the mess surrounding Kevin Wilson’s dismissal notwithstanding) and Maryland remains an Under Armour-backed semi-sleeping giant that improved in 2016 and could sniff eight and nine-win seasons soon if D.J. Durkin keeps reeling in top-20 recruiting classes.

3. Penn State’s present and future

The Nittany Lions’ dud of a first half on Saturday night removed any possibility that they could submit any sort of ‘wow’ win that may have altered its perception among the minds that be in the committee room, but outscoring Wisconsin 24-3 in the final two quarters and lighting up the Indianapolis night sky with McSorley bombs wasn’t a bad alternative.

In the end, Penn State’s loss to Pitt and the severe nature of its road defeat to Michigan proved to be too much to overcome in the eyes of the committee despite its status as a conference champion and its head-to-head triumph over Ohio State.

Once the sting of missing out on a Cinderella playoff run washes away, Nittany Lions fans should take great solace in knowing that this team probably hit its stride a year early. The current squad has just four senior starters, and the crux of the squad’s big play offense—Trace McSorley, Saquon Barkley, Chris Godwin, Mike Gesicki, and DaeSean Hamilton—all have eligibility remaining. Thus, Penn State—which has also recruited very well under James Franklin—should be able to sustain this positive momentum in 2017, though the schedule gets far more difficult with a September road game at Iowa and a brutal post-bye week stretch: a home game vs. Michigan, then back-to-back road contests at revenge-minded Ohio State (a surefire night game) and Michigan State.

4. Washington’s friskiness

Of all the realistic playoff contenders, Washington was the team in most need of a ‘statement win’ over the weekend, if only to make sure that its Baylor-esque non-conference slate (Rutgers, Idaho, Portland State) would not totally undermine its near-evisceration of the Pac-12, where the Huskies boasted a scoring margin of plus-205 in conference play.

And while most will provide Washington nary a chance to survive Alabama—early Vegas lines have installed defending champs as two-touchdown favorites—I’m not willing to do the same.

Though Alabama will boast a massive talent advantage, the lone time this season the Tide faced an offense with the sort of quarterback play and skill position player talent the Huskies harbor, they yielded 421 passing yards (and 522 total yards) to Chad Kelly and Ole Miss. Washington also sports a bonafide giant-slaying coach in Chris Petersen, whose Boise State squad felled Adrian Peterson and Oklahoma in the unforgettable 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Petersen’s Broncos also beat TCU, Virginia Tech, Georgia, and Oregon (twice). Dude can coach.

Do I expect Washington to win? No. But as long as the Huskies, tops in the country in turnover margin, keep Bama’s defense and special teams from scoring—easier said than done given that the Tide have 14 (!!!) combined defensive and special teams touchdowns—they will be in the game.

5. Wisconsin’s missed opportunities

Up 21 with just over two minutes left in the first half of Saturday night’s game in Indy, the Badgers had the Nittany Lions pinned on their own 10-yard-line. Even if Wisconsin limited Penn State to three points, it would have preserved its three-score advantage. Instead, McSorley found Saeed Blacknall for 12 yards on a 3rd-and-10 from midfield. On the next play, McSorley hit Blacknall again for a 40-yard touchdown.

Still, Wisconsin got the first crack at scoring after intermission and drove to Penn State’s 27. Facing a 3rd-and-3, the Badgers lost three yards and then missed a field goal. On the next play, McSorley bombed away to Blacknall again, this time from 70 yards away, and Wisconsin had officially ceded control of the game. The Nittany Lions scored on their next three possessions, while Wisconsin logged two punts, a field goal, and a turnover on downs.

However, looking at the Badgers from a glass half-full sense, Paul Chryst’s team (like Penn State) was probably a year ahead of schedule. Wisconsin has only five non-special teams senior starters, and stands to return its entire offensive line in 2017. Freshman quarterback Alex Hornibrook, who was more than serviceable in his first taste of action this fall, will also be back. The Badgers will have tough road games at BYU and Nebraska next fall, but get Iowa and Michigan at home and avoid inter-division games with Ohio State and Penn State.

All hail the kings of the West.

Ohio State will play in the late game.

Earlier today, we learned that you don’t need to win a conference championship to make the College Football Playoff, as the Buckeyes grabbed the No. 3 seed, and will face the Clemson Tigers in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl. The winner will face the winner of the Alabama/Washington game in the Peach Bowl ... so basically, Alabama.

Now, we know when Ohio State will kick off, so you can figure out your New Year’s Eve plans now.

Ohio State and Clemson will kickoff at 7 p.m. ET on December 31. Alabama and Washington will kickoff at 3:00 p.m. ET.

One one hand, that might be tougher for Ohio State fans, with that night being New Year’s Eve and all, but if the game isn’t going to be on at the party you’re attending, why are you even going? At least this way, the Buckeyes will get that prime-time focus on themselves.

No matter what time the game kicks off though, this should be an excellent battle.

Now the head coach looks towards Clemson.

Less than an hour after the College Football Playoff committee announced that Ohio State will be one of the four teams fighting for a national championship, Urban Meyer took to the podium to talk to the media about the next step for his team. The Buckeyes finished the regular season ranked No. 3 and will begin preparations to face No. 2 Clemson on New Years Eve.

  • Meyer said he texted his players and coaches during the announcement telling them “we are going to handle this with humility and class” noting how many different teams deserved a spot in the playoff.
  • Having the week of to stay healthy and to have some additional time to recruit was a bit different than years past. He quipped that several coaches got sick afterward because they won the rivalry game and were out on the recruiting trail the next day.
  • On what the month of December looks like in terms of preparation, Meyer said he is meeting with the operations guy right after the press conference to set up the practice schedule. They are going to mirror what they did to prepare in 2014, but with some adjustments with so many young players.
  • The head coach knows Clemson very well. He’s friendly with the coaching staff and recruited several of their players -- including quarterback Deshaun Watson.
  • Meyer couldn’t be goaded into defending why Ohio State deserves a Top 4 spot out of respect for the other coaches and players who played their hearts out this season and into the conference championships. He admitted he didn’t realize the level of disrespect a few years ago from those calling the Big Ten the worst conference in the country. This is one of the reasons he’d rather not defend the decision.
  • Meyer admits the win in Oklahoma was not just important in them getting to the CFP, but it was a big game for the young guys and seeing how far they’ve come and could go. He wasn’t “jacked up” to take a group of guys who had yet to play a road game at Ohio State all the way to face the Sooners, but he doesn’t control the schedule.
  • On how much Meyer values conference championship, he said, “that’s why I go to work everyday”. He also noted that he wished he was in the Big Ten Championship when he was at home watching it.
  • The head coach was asked if the College Football Playoff was fun. Meyer wouldn’t go as far as calling it fun, but did say he’s compared it to March Madness being 365 days a year — you can’t lose.

Just before he spoke to reporters, Meyer talked to ESPN about Ohio State being in the College Football Playoff. On his reaction, he opened with, “Very appreciative of the committee, and with it comes a lot of responsibility”.

  • He lauded the players and coaches across the Big Ten conference who have helped change the conversation from worst conference to the best.
  • Meyer said he plans on having a conversation with Athletic Director Gene Smith about out-of-conference scheduling now that it’s evident how important it is -- citing Oklahoma being left out thanks to their two non-conference losses.
  • The head coach also spoke about knowing Clemson’s players very well, having recruited several of them.

Tom Rinaldi announced on ESPN’s pre-selection show that Meyer became a grandfather on Sunday as well; his daughter Nikki gave birth to a healthy baby boy, named Troy. Meyer later said that he watched the selection show from the fifth floor of the maternity ward.

Ready to run through a wall? You will be.

The Ohio State Buckeyes’ elite level video team would be in a College Football Playoff if one such existed for athletic department’s video production corps. With the OSU football team living up to their end of the bargain, David Trichel and co. elected to break out the big guns with one of their realest hype videos of the season.

The only real upset would’ve been had OSU somehow fallen out of the Top 4 altogether and the world had been deprived of the video team’s latest masterwork. Instead, be sure to take a minute out of your day, turn your volume up loud, and get ready for J.T. and co. to do it up against the champions of the ACC, the Clemson Tigers, on New Year’s Eve.

With a possible Clemson hype video still in store as kickoff gets closer, the scary part is the best may be yet to come.

For the Buckeyes, the jerseys appear to be very similar to the ones that the team wore in their win over Michigan. Time will tell if Ohio State will bring back the black matte helmets as well.

No. 1 Alabama will be the home-team against No. 4 Washington in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta, while No. 2 Clemson will square off against No. 3 Ohio State in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl from Glendale, AZ. Both games will take place on Saturday, December 31st, with official game times being announced shortly.

Las Vegas has installed the Buckeyes as a 3 to 3.5-point favorite over Clemson, while Alabama is favored by 14-points over Washington.

The Buckeyes are favored in a rematch of the 2014 Orange Bowl.

Just minutes after the official College Football Playoff selections had been announced, Las Vegas odds-makers began taking bets on the two semifinal games. No. 1 Alabama will take on No. 4 Washington in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and No. 3 Ohio State will take on No. 2 Clemson in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.

Despite being the lower-seeded team, the early odds from a number of sports books have installed Ohio State as either a 3 or 3.5-point favorite over the Tigers.
