After a long holiday break, the Buckeyes open conference play against the Fighting Illini.

For Thad Matta’s team, a long holiday break may be just what the doctor ordered. After playing three games in six days, culminating in a squeaker of a win against UNC-Asheville, the Buckeyes looked to be in need of a little rest before the start of conference play.

It’s been a Jekyll-and-Hyde start to the season for Ohio State. Two of their three losses, to Virginia and UCLA, were perfectly understandable; the other defeat, at the hands of lowly Florida Atlantic, was not. FAU is (as of press time) 300th in the country in points scored.

Following a blowout win against the Youngstown State Penguins (<3 u, Coach Tressel), Ohio State edged UNC-Asheville, 79-77. A pair of 17-point efforts from Jae’Sean Tate and Jaquan Lyle led the way, and Kam Williams slammed the door shut by hitting a pair of free throws with four seconds to go to hand the Buckeyes their 10th win of the season.

Now Matta’s squad will be tasked with shutting down an Illinois team with its own share of ups and downs in the season’s early going. The Illini will be playing on shorter rest than the Buckeyes, thanks to an 84-59 drubbing at the hands of Maryland a few days after Christmas. It was their second loss of more than 25 points this season.

The Big Ten—which features just three AP top 25 teams—feels wide open. A solid win for the Buckeyes here would be a great way to kick off conference play and set the tone for a tough stretch against the midwest’s traditional powers.

Numbers to know

75

So far, it’s been an uninspiring season for the Buckeyes offensively. Their 75 points per game average puts them at just 160th nationally (out of 351), and they’ve struggled to find the kind of rhythm that drove the team in years past. They’ve cleared 80 points just once in 13 games, during a 111-70 thrashing of Marshall, and have failed to hit 70 four times.

Ohio State’s defense has been excellent all year, dragging good teams like Virginia into rock fights and keeping games close late. But that won’t matter if they can’t start lighting up the scoreboard with more consistency. Illinois, 173rd nationally in points allowed (71.3/game), might give them a chance to do that.

1-2

Out of 13 games, the Buckeyes have played just three on the road. They opened the season with a solid 10-point win over a feisty Navy team, then lost to Virginia and UCLA away from Columbus. Thad Matta’s team travels to Champaign for their Big Ten opener, putting the Buckeyes in hostile territory—an environment they’ve rarely experienced in this young season.

Ohio State is just 7-13 on the road in the last two years (8-15 if you count the start of this one). Beating Illinois on their own court isn’t anybody’s definition of a signature win, but it could help staunch the bleeding away from home.

300

Opposing teams have turned Illinois over 199 times in their 14 games this year. That’s good for a robust No. 300 ranking nationally, per Sports Reference. The Buckeyes haven’t lacked for defenders with quick hands and a willingness to scrap in recent years, and this year is no exception. If Jaquan Lyle and Kam Williams do the dirty work on defense, we’ve seen that they can force players like Malcolm Hill and Jaylon Tate (who lead the Illini in turnovers) into costly mistakes. Since this game doesn’t seem likely to be a barn-burner, every possession is going to matter; the Buckeyes are well equipped to end a few of Illinois’ attempts early by forcing turnovers.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Kam Williams

One of the Buckeyes’ longest-tenured players, Williams shares the team lead for steals per game and is Ohio State’s best three-point shooter. He is also one of the streakiest offensive players on the roster: he’s turned in lights-out performances (5-6 from deep and 23 total points against Navy) and unwatchable ones (1-7 from deep and 3 total points against UConn). He couldn’t hit the three ball against UCLA, either, but seems to have regained a bit of his mojo in the team’s last two contests.

We’ve mentioned Illinois’ generous defense; that stat also applies to their three-point defense, which ranks just 123rd nationally (by percentage). This game seems as good a time as any for Killa Kam to get back into the groove he found early in the year against the likes of Navy.

Jae’Sean Tate

Ohio State’s leading scorer is nothing if not consistent. He’s reached double digits in all but one game this season, and his 17 points against UNC-Asheville allowed the Buckeyes to escape without another ugly black mark on their record. It’ll be on Tate to drive Thad Matta’s offense and secure a victory in what looks like a very winnable game against John Groce’s Illini. He’s struggled from the free throw line—he’s no Williams in that respect—but has otherwise turned in solid performances (if not explosive ones) all season.

Illinois

Malcolm Hill

Illinois’ senior shooting guard, Malcolm Hill, is far and away the most complete player on the team. He leads all Illini in scoring with 18.6 points per game, and is among the team leaders in steals, assists, and free throw shooting. Hill is coming off of back-to-back 21-point performances, including his showing as the lone bright spot for the Illini against Maryland earlier this week. He’ll be the focal point for John Groce’s offensive game plan when the Buckeyes come to Champaign, and odds are he’ll find a way to put points on the scoreboard—inside, outside, or from the line.

Tracy Abrams

Hill might be the most complete scorer on the Illini, but point guard Tracy Abrams is even better than him from deep. Besides being able to hit threes, “Old Man” Abrams—who missed two full seasons with injury—is a capable distributor whose production doesn’t seemed to have suffered despite all his time away from basketball. Since making his comeback, he’s been able to up his scoring output and cut down on his turnovers, making him a worthy opponent for this stingy Buckeye defense.

This is huge.

You know he played lacrosse in high school. You know he was at one time committed to Notre Dame. Now we know he’s coming back to Ohio State for another year to wreak havoc on opposing defenses:

#BuckeyeNation I'm not going anywhere. Time to get to work for next season .. Thank you seniors, it was a pleasure. Love you all

— Samwise (@Sam_Hubbard_) January 1, 2017

The defensive end started all 13 games for Ohio State in 2016.

Hubbard recorded 46 total tackles on the season. He added 3.5 sacks along with 8 tackles for a loss.

The redshirt sophomore would’ve been able to make himself eligible for the NFL Draft as he’s three years from having graduated high school.

A freakish athlete, Hubbard could've gone as high as the second or third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Greg Schiano’s next Buckeye defense will be that much better with Hubbard around anchoring the defensive line another season. Hubbard will be back with a slew of other playmakers on Ohio State’s defensive line, including Nick Bosa, to help anchor what could be another very good unit.

Price is on the Elflein path.

Two seasons ago, guard Pat Elflein helped anchor an outstanding line which played a part in turning four-star recruit Ezekiel Elliott from developing running back into a superstar.

After returning for his final season in scarlet and gray, Elflein moved to center, a position he’d never started at prior, and evolved into the Rimington Trophy winner, which goes annually to the nation’s best center.

While much speculation had circled fellow lineman Billy Price, who some felt had nothing left to accomplish in Columbus and were expecting to go pro, in the wake of a gutwrenching loss to Clemson, Price announced he too would be returning to Columbus for his final year of eligibility.

To add to the intrigue, Price says he too will move to center, which all but guarantees we know Elflein’s replacement next season:

Billy Price has said he will come back next year for OSU to play center.

— James Grega Jr. (@JGrega11) January 1, 2017

There aren’t a lot of lemons to make lemonade with for many Buckeye faithful after a night like the one against Clemson, but if there’s one silver lining, Price’s announcement could be one we’re looking back on fondly at this time next season.

usa_today_9780701.0.jpeg

The rest of the year still happened, after all.

It’s hard to keep perspective when you’re getting your ass kicked.

This is probably a stretch, but keep with me here.

I remember a game back in my high school indoor soccer days. We were getting clobbered, something like 14-3. I was a goalie, and had a ball, or a cleated foot, flying towards my face every few seconds, completely powerless to stop it. Near the end of the game, to add insult to injury, the opposing team’s goalie decided to dribble from his own goal, through our hapless and hungover lines of defense, and then blasted it in the right corner of the net I was trying to defend.

Right then, I had no perspective. I, a 130 pound, Eagle Scout, churchgoing dork, sprinted up to the other goalie, challenged him to fight right then and there, and screamed every curse word I knew, and some I probably didn’t know either. I didn’t really learn to cuss properly until I started working in a newsroom.

My teammates peeled me away, saving me from a certain stomping, and I didn’t talk to any of them for two days. I had just had my ass kicked, and I had no time to think.

Given the benefit of time, I could have remembered that our team actually was slightly above .500, a major accomplishment given we were made up of soccer team rejects, band nerds who wanted exercise, non-athletes who just had crushes on the girls on our team, and like, two people who were actually good at soccer. We were coached by my dad, when he remembered to show up, a man whose only qualification was that he married a Brazilian woman.

The fact that we got crushed, badly, by a very good team shouldn’t have erased all the positive developments we made, and eventually, it didn’t. Other than my getting mad, I’ll remember that season with a lot of positivity. It was fun, and sometimes we were even good.

I know this is a stretch, but Ohio State is in a similar situation. They just got their ass kicked by Clemson, 31-0, in the Fiesta Bowl. Their season is now over.

It is very rare that Ohio State gets their ass kicked. I can’t even remember the last time Ohio State was shutout — a 28-0 loss to Michigan in 1993 — because I was just six years old. I can count the number of times in my own personal memory that Ohio State was well and truly clobbered on one hand. It’s a very rare thing in Columbus, and in the institutional memory of Ohio State fans, which makes dealing with it even harder.

There’s no way to get around it for this game. The Buckeyes lost to a superior team. Clemson’s defensive line crushed Ohio State at the point of attack for the entire game, and the Tigers, paced by perhaps the best group of wideouts in college football, an elite quarterback, and a nasty defensive line, probably would have won even if Ohio State’s offensive skill players had performed well, instead of having their worst game of the season. All you can do is congratulate the Tigers, and wish them the best against Alabama.

The question, at this point, is whether you let this loss, a horrible ending to the 2016 season, color the rest of the year. That’s up to you. I can’t tell you how to be a fan.

But I can at least go over some facts. Like the fact that Notre Dame finished 4-8, or that the spot was good. But here are some others:

Fact: Ohio State entered the 2016 campaign with the youngest roster amongst Power 5 teams. They replaced virtually their entire secondary. They replaced almost every single player who caught a pass. They brought in a new running back, started a true freshman along the offensive line, and used a walk-on at kicker. Even for a team that recruits as well as Ohio State does, that is an enormous amount of youth.

Fact: Ohio State played a challenging schedule, and cleared nearly every hurdle. They dumptrucked the best team in the Big 12, Oklahoma, on the road. They beat Wisconsin, a top-10 squad, on the road. They crushed a nine-win Tulsa team. They obliterated a nine-win Nebraska team. They came within two blocked kicks of finishing undefeated. Even with an experienced, veteran squad, which Ohio State did not have, that would be a season of merit.

Fact: Ohio State beat Michigan, perhaps the best Michigan team in a decade. Plus, they did it in a way that proved to be extra rewarding to Buckeye faithful.

Fact: Ohio State’s defense, and especially their secondary, was elite, exciting, and will send even more players to the NFL.

Fact: Notre Dame finished 4-8. Just case you missed that earlier. Want to make sure we’re all on the same page.

Is everything perfect with Ohio State? No. I think it’s clear that despite Ohio State’s elite recruiting, multiple prospects at WR and OL have not worked out, either due to misevaluation, injury, poor development and more, robbing the Buckeyes of important depth at those positions. Playing all season with a walk-on at kicker is not ideal. J.T. Barrett has clearly regressed, perhaps a combination of poor pass-catching targets, blocking, injury, coaching, himself and more. And Ohio State’s playcalling and offensive imagination is very clearly not at the standard it was under Tom Herman.

They were bailed out by an excellent defense multiple times this season, and that defense will need to replace some major parts.

The good news is that Ohio State is bringing in perhaps their best recruiting class ever in 2017. Freshman become sophomores. Sophomores become juniors. As many of us heard on High Street many years ago, “Help is on the way.”

If you think this stink bomb of a finale sullies the rest of the season, that’s up to you. If you want to believe that Ohio State’s program is going off the rails, subject to slide into further mediocrity unless major coaching or other structural changes are made, that’s your call. I imagine we’ll be talking about that all offseason.

But for me, I think the 2016 champaign was a success. It didn’t end quite how we’d like. But the rest of those games count too, even if they weren’t always fun to watch. Given what Ohio State was up against, what they accomplished this football season is something to be praised and enjoyed.

And they’re likely to start the preseason in the top five, if not higher. More good times are likely on the horizon.

Maybe you disagree. Maybe you’ll feel that way more in a few days. That’s up to you. Things certainly are not crystal clear right now. After all, we all just witnessed an ass-kicking.

Game Day is here, and so are the nerves and the paranoia. The angst and the dread are there too. I have this knot in my stomach as we are minutes away from the opening kickoff. Clemson is ready. Ohio State is ready, and as both teams take the field, the anticipation kicks in and I am ready. This is what Ohio State and Clemson is here for a spot in the College Football Championship Game. All of the players are ready to unleash a whooping on each other. As a College Football fan, no matter what the end result is, we had a hell of a season. A rollercoaster ride of ups and downs. And Clemson has gone through the same ride. This is a successful season for both of their standards, but a win would be ideal. We will see how it goes.

On the opening possession, J.T. Barrett begins the game with a pop pass to Samuel to ensure he gets his quota for touches per game. The drive then stalled as on 3rd and 8, Barrett finds an open Mike Weber out of the backfield for an easy first down catch. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, Weber dropped the pass and the Buckeyes punt the ball back to Clemson. Clemson began past the 15-yard line, but their first drive only lasted two plays. A receiver slipped on the turf and Gareon Conley undercut the route for the games first turnover. With decent field position, the Buckeyes drive ended on a sack after Michael Jordan went down after with a key injury. Demetrius Knox was inserted into the game and gave up the first sack of the game after failing to get off the line to block and Tyler Durbin pushed the field goal a smidge to the right. Clemson took over and drove into Ohio State territory for a field goal and currently lead the Buckeyes 3-0. The Buckeyes got the ensuing kickoff and Parris Campbell returned it to the Clemson 46-yard line. After another missed field goal, the Buckeyes leave more points on the field. Clemson takes over at their own 30-yard line. The Tigers take the ball 67 yards on 9 plays and Deshaun Watson takes it in to extend their lead 10-0. Ohio State get the ball back on their 23-yard line and reach Clemson territory and end the 1st Quarter on a 1-yard gain. The predictability of the play calling and the inability to block and get open in space, coupled with the nerves that has shaken Tyler Durbin to the core have cost the Buckeyes as it should be a 10-6 game, but things happen. Here is to another quarter.

After receiving the Buckeye punt, Clemson begins their next drive at their 11-yard line. The Silver Bullets makes the stop as Jalyn Holmes and Raekwon McMillan stop Watson short of the line to gain. The Tigers punt and the ball takes a Clemson roll to the Buckeyes 11, pinning them deep in their territory. Ohio State was once again plagued by drops and untimely penalties and it results in another Buckeye punt. The Clemson Tigers began their next drive with the lead at their 26-yard line. The Clemson Offense looked to tack on another score to pad their lead, but Malik Hooker added to his interception statistics as the most of the Buckeye crowd burst into excitement. Hopefully, this will bring energy to the offense because they are struggling to make plays and the play calling is predictable at best. Mike Weber needs to be fed like Zeke was because he still has no carries for the game. Long behold, Weber on the first play of this drive received his first carry of the game for a gain of 5 yards. The interception was all for nothing as the Buckeyes punt once again bringing up his total to 189 yards for the game compared to the entire offenses 76 yards. This is not looking too good, but I will keep the faith. The Clemson offense received and took the ball in the end zone on another wheel route to a leaking Running Back. Baker was left in coverage and Holmes had a roughing the passer penalty to guarantee a touchback. The Buckeyes end the half with a 17-0 deficit. They all look defeated as their punter doubles the offensive output with 240 yards to the offenses 88. Things need to change or they will get blown out. See you after halftime.

On Clemson’s first drive of the second half, the Buckeyes look to stop the bleeding. Three plays later, the Buckeyes come up big on defense to force a Clemson punt. The possession did not last long as Weber fumbled the ball, putting the Buckeyes in a bad spot. This is probably what happens when you don’t feed him enough. Anyway, the Clemson Tigers raced into Ohio State territory once again and that is when the Buckeyes made three huge defensive plays in a row. Three big tackles for loss and one, a sack from McMillan is a welcome sign for the way the game has been for us fans. A near offsides penalty by Dre’mont Jones cost the Buckeyes the stop, but Huegel missed the field goal wide left to keep the score at 17-0. It is within reach to creep back into this game, but it’ll take some imagination with the playcalling. The Tigers force another punt as they continue to shut down the Ohio State Offense. On their drive, they reach the Ohio State territory, but the defense comes up with their second sack of the game forcing a rare Clemson punt. Ohio State comes back with another punt on their own after another sack of Barrett. Well, the end is here. Watson scored once again to push the lead to 24-0. It is now over with Beck and Warriner’s inability to call anything but swing passes. After back to back deep shots and two penalties on Clemson, Weber runs the ball, then runs over the defender and fumbles. Next play, Barrett throws a pick. I am ready for this game to be over because I am sick to my stomach at what I am seeing. The players are getting a bit chippy as Weber pushes Tankersley after the interception and Watkins comes to his rescue. The end of the 4th Quarter as the Tigers look to salt away the game. They get into Ohio State territory once again, but they end up punting the ball. Samuel earned some yardage as he gained 64-yards on a counter play. The Buckeyes line immediately gathers more negative yardage on a false start and it set them back 5 yards and a sack on the next play. On 3rd and 17 the Buckeyes turn it over with a pick that nearly went for six points. Gallman punches it in for another score. Clemson up 31-0. At this point, I just want some points to cap a terrible showing. On 4th and short Weber gets stuffed and the shut-out is still there. The Clemson Tigers win 31-0 and blank the Buckeyes for their first shutout since 1993 to TTUN. This has been one hell of a ride and you can only grow from this, no matter how bad it tastes at this moment. Life will go on and this will certainly be a long cold offseason for all of us. Good job team and it has been a great season and good work Clemson, you deserve it. Goodnight folks.

The Tigers were too much for the Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff.

To get to the College Football Playoff, Ohio State had to pull off a double overtime win against arch rival Michigan after losing to Penn State weeks before the game. After some tough goings against lesser opponents the Buckeyes bounced back just in time and found themselves face to face with Deshaun Watson and the second-ranked Clemson Tigers. Alabama awaited the winner between Ohio State and the Tigers, after taking care of business against Washington in the Peach Bowl semifinal. In somewhat of a “rebuilding” year, the Buckeyes proved they continued to reload despite losing so many starters to the NFL, but ran into a talented Tigers team to which they fell 31-0.

Ohio State and J.T. Barrett would start the game with the ball, after Clemson deferred on the coin toss. Curtis Samuel would be involved right from the start, with two quick receptions. A dropped pass by a wide open Mike Weber would lead to the Buckeyes going three and out on the first drive. Deshaun Watson and the Tigers would start deep in their own territory but on the second play of the drive, Watson would throw in Gareon Conley’s direction, who would step up and make a big interception.

The Buckeyes started the next drive on Clemson’s 33-yard line thanks to Conley’s pick. On second down Barrett would find Terry McLaurin for a short gain but the next play, the Tigers got to Barrett behind the line of scrimmage setting up fourth and long. Tyler Durbin would come in for a 47-yard field goal attempt, which sailed right, keeping the game scoreless. On Clemson’s next drive, Deshaun Watson would find Mike Williams for a big play over the middle on third down to push the Tigers into Ohio State territory. After an Ohio State stop, Clemson would knock in a 45-yard field goal to take an early 3-0 lead over the Buckeyes.

A long kick return by Parris Campbell would again set up Ohio State in Clemson territory. A nice Barrett run would set up third down and would then find Curtis Samuel for a first down. Three plays later, the Buckeyes would have to set up a field goal. Durbin would again miss, this time missing on the left side of the uprights. The Tigers would take advantage on the following drive, throwing all over Ohio State’s secondary into the redzone with plenty of passes thrown Mike Williams way. On third and short, Hunter Renfrow would come close to the goal line, setting up a Deshaun Watson run for a touchdown, upping the Tigers lead to 10-0.

Looking for some momentum offensively, J.T. Barrett would find Binjimin Victor over the middle for a 21-yard reception. A couple of plays later, the Buckeyes would punt and Clemson would start its own drive deep in its territory. The Tigers would find it tough to run the ball against Ohio State and Raekwon McMillan would meet Watson head on for a third down stop. A booming Clemson punt would give Barrett and the offense tough field position on their next drive.

After a handful of plays and an unfortunate drop from Curtis Samuel, Ohio State would once again have to punt. Artavis Scott would field the punt and Clemson took over on offense. A designed quarterback run from Watson moved the chains on second and short. Wayne Gallman would add another first down with a tough reception and run dragging defenders with him. Malik Hooker would come up with some heroics once again as Watson fired a bomb to the right side of the field, while Hooker got his hands on the football for the interception.

Mike Weber would get his first carry in the middle of the second quarter, followed by a Curtis Samuel reception, who was able to convert the first down. Noah Brown would get a catch of his own on the next play. A couple plays later, Cameron Johnston once again would punt the ball away, pinning Clemson inside its own 20-yard line. Deshaun Watson would come out running right away with a 33-yard burst, dodging defenders every which way. A couple plays later, C.J. Fuller would stretch out for an excellent diving catch for a Clemson touchdown, putting the Tigers up to a comfortable 17-0 lead near the end of the first half.

Clemson, holding a nice lead to start the second half, would start with the ball. Facing an early third down, the Tigers would be held off on a deep throw and forced to punt. A nice pass to Noah Brown from J.T. Barrett would be followed up by a carry from Weber who would proceed to fumble the ball after a solid run, setting up Clemson with great field position. A few plays later and the Tigers were knocking on the door of the endzone. Jerome Baker would come up with a big tackle on the goal line to set up third and goal. On fourth and goal, Clemson’s field goal would shank to the left and the score stayed at 17-0.

On the next Ohio State possession, a quick three and out would result in another punt. The Tigers wouldn’t take long to reach Buckeyes territory but after a stop, J.T. Barrett would have another chance to get things going. Facing a third and 13, Barrett would get sacked back near his own endzone and another punt would ensue. On Clemson’s next drive, Deshaun Watson would add to the lead, sprinting through the defense into the endzone for a 24-0 lead late in the third quarter.

Two pass interference calls would help move the chains several times on Ohio State’s next possession, but a poorly thrown ball from J.T. Barrett would be intercepted at the goal line by Clemson’s defense. To start the fourth quarter, Wayne Gallman would gash the Buckeyes defense for a first down on third and 19. Eventually the Buckeyes would get the ball back and Curtis Samuel would make an electrifying 64-yard run, finally breaking free. But a couple of plays later the Buckeyes would face fourth down and forever and essentially toss a Hail Mary that was intercepted and returned nearly all the way.

After the interception return, Wayne Gallman would add to his terrific night with a touchdown of his own to put Clemson up 31-0 with about nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. Ohio State would have another possession and a chance to push for a score, but a fourth and short run by Mike Weber would be stopped short of the first down for a turnover on downs. The Buckeyes would not get another chance to have the ball.

Here are three things we learned from Ohio State's 31-0 loss.

3 things we learned:

1. The offense goes as the offensive line goes. With all of the ups and downs that Ohio State’s offensive line has faced all season and the true lack of depth, the last thing the Buckeyes needed early in the game was for an injury to occur. That’s exactly what happened as left guard Michael Jordan suffered an injury forcing Demetrius Knox into starting action. And the struggles across the line showed as the Buckeyes offense only managed 88 yards of total offense in the first half. J.T. Barrett was 12-of-19 passing with 80 of those yards, but it was a quiet showing for the run game, with no rusher with more than five yards. Mike Weber only carried the ball once while Samuel was a near non-factor for much of the first half. It didn’t get better in the second half, either as the pressure got to Barrett more times than not.

Going against a defensive line and especially a pass rush as lethal as Clemson’s was no doubt one of the toughest challenges the offensive line has faced up to this point, and much like the in the Michigan game, it showed in the play. Though the Buckeyes finished strong against the Wolverines, they had their struggles for three of the four quarters (and overtimes) in that game.

2. Ohio State’s defense came up clutch, but wasn’t enough. There really wasn’t much else the Ohio State defense could do in the first half. The secondary, especially, came up in a big way forcing two interceptions. One, early on from Gareon Conley, only resulted in a missed field goal. Malik Hooker’s interception later in the second quarter didn’t result in any points either. The Tigers had plenty of issues when trying to run the ball and though Clemson scored 17 points in the first half, it’s hard to blame the defense, facing such a potent offensive attack. Deshaun Watson had his moments, including a first half touchdown coming late in the second quarter, and a 33-yard rush before that.

Raekwon McMillan and the rest of the defense did what was mostly asked of them, and though it’s likely they weren’t happy with the end result, it’s not as if they didn’t provide Ohio State’s offense chances to score, especially in great field position. The second half was another strong showing for the defense but Clemson was just too much to shut down completely.

3. Clemson will face Alabama in the College Football Playoff national championship, and that’s okay. At the end of the day, it’s easy to look at Ohio State and understand why they struggled so much against a really good Clemson team. After all, this is essentially the same team that went to the national championship and narrowly lost to Alabama. Deshaun Watson is a true Heisman Trophy finalist (and could have won the award had it not been for the brilliance of Lamar Jackson) and showed his skills throughout much of the evening. When Tyler Durbin missed two early field goals, it sort of showed the writing on the wall for the Buckeyes, and after not scoring the rest of the first half, they built themselves quite the hole.

Ohio State’s offensive line didn’t play well and the play calling wasn’t going to be able to do much to change that. In a supposed rebuilding year, this was still quite the impressive run for the Buckeyes and it should be thought of as much despite the loss. J.T. Barrett will no likely be disappointed with the loss, but should he come back next season, he should have a more experienced team built around him that should be ready to make another run to the College Football Playoff.

The Buckeyes still had a very good season, finishing 11-2, and though they didn’t finish as the Big Ten champions, they did beat Michigan (because the spot was good).
