Plot twist.

Ohio State fans’ relationship with Tim Beck has been a complicated one.

Nebraska partisans were seemingly happy to see him go. Beck’s own place in the college football pantheon was such then that multiple Getty image photos of him were actually mislabeled ones of other Cornhusker assistants.

While Beck’s had his fair share of big wins on the recruiting trail — particularly in the state of Texas, where Beck was an accomplished high school head coach — OSU’s offensive regression post Tom Herman and the failure of J.T. Barrett’s development as a passer had caused, fairly or unfairly, Beck to be in many a fans’ collective crosshairs.

Now the desire for new ideas and input into the Buckeye offense will be coming to fruition next season as the Ohio State co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach is leaving OSU to join Herman at the University of Texas as co-offensive coordinator.

Beck will perhaps be most remembered at OSU for the contentious quarterback competition of 2015 which eventually culminated in a stillborn offensive showing against Michigan State, effectively ending the Buckeyes’ title defense hopes. While long time collaborator Ed Warinner was actually the principle play caller for the Buckeyes, the offense’s inability to live up to the high standard established by their predecessor will likely forever color perception of Beck’s time in Columbus.

Here’s wishing the soon to be former assistant the best in Austin. If Tom Herman ultimately calls his own plays with Beck focused on recruitment, the situation might prove best for everyone involved.

Quite a few Buckeye commits, targets will be taking part in the Army All-American Game.

As the festivities surrounding the Under Armour All-American game come to a close, the remaining high school all-stars will participate in the Army All-American week, leading up the the game this Saturday. The game this week will be more intriguing for Buckeye fans as three times as many future Buckeyes chose to play in this week’s game over last weeks.

A total of nine Buckeye commits will be in attendance for the game. The majority of the future Buckeyes will be suiting up for the West team, including Baron Browning (Kennedale, TX / Kennedale), Wyatt Davis (Bellflower, CA / St. John Bosco), J.K. Dobbins (La Grange, TX / La Grange) and Las Vegas (Bishop Gorman high school) teammates Tyjon Lindsey, Tate Martell and Haskell Garrett.

The remaining three commits that will play for the East team include, Josh Myers (Miamisburg, OH / Miamisburg), Shaun Wade (Jacksonville, FL / Trinity Christian Academy) and Chase Young (Hyattsville, MD / DeMatha Catholic).

Despite a large list of commits attending the game, the Buckeyes also have multiple targets participating in this year’s game and the program is hopeful to end the week with more commits than it entered with.

The two biggest names for Buckeye Nation to follow are five-star defensive backs Darnay Holmes (Calabasas, CA / Calabasas) and Jeffrey Okudah (Grand Prairie, TX / South Grand Prairie). Seen as the top two DBs in the 2017 class, both are scheduled to announce their schools of choice during Saturday’s broadcast and there is a good chance the Buckeyes could land both.

Okudah has long been associated with the Buckeyes program and is considered a heavy lean to choose Ohio State. Okudah practiced on Monday and his play once again received plenty of recognition. Barton Simmons of 247Sports.com included Okudah as one of his top-ten performers, and called him “one of the most unique specimens at the corner position in this class.”

Okudah received plenty of attention from Ohio State as the regular season came to an end. He was in attendance for the Buckeyes double overtime victory over Michigan and received an in-home visit from Meyer just four days after the game.

Holmes is the other five-star DB the Buckeyes are in play for that is set to announce his collegiate decision this week. A one-time UCLA lean, the Buckeyes have emerged as a legit contender for Holmes after his official visit during the Ohio State-Michigan game.

Bill Kurelic of 247Sports caught up with Holmes after Monday’s practice and he continued to list Ohio State and UCLA among the top teams he is interested in. While the recruitment of Holmes is much less certain than that of Okudah’s, the Buckeyes have to like where they stand with him.

With three DBs already committed to this class, if Ohio State were to add even just one of either Okudah or Holmes, the haul at the position would set the Buckeyes up in the secondary for years to come.

The Ohio State standout is expected to be a high first round draft pick.

Virtually no one outside of the Ohio State locker room foresaw Malik Hooker’s meteoric rise.

Kerry Coombs, Buckeye special teams and cornerbacks coach, likes to say that the entire secondary aims to be first round draft picks. And after a year that should’ve garnered him a hat tip from the Thorpe Award, the annual trophy that goes to the nation’s best defensive back, one member of Greg Schiano and co.’s core will get to fulfill that dream.

Announcing the decision on Twitter Monday, OSU safety Malik Hooker made his plans official that he’s foregoing his remaining eligibility and entering the 2017 NFL Draft. Hooker was barely more than a fringe candidate to start heading into last offseason but emerged into an interception machine for the Buckeyes this past fall.

While the decision to head to the next level is hardly a surprise (and one OSU coaches have undoubtedly been preparing for for several months now), losing a player of Hooker’s caliber is always bittersweet. Here’s wishing him all the best at the next level.

A pair of future Buckeyes lined up against some of the best on the high school level.

Some of the top talent on the high school level had a chance to strut their stuff on live national television over the weekend. Five-star wide out Trevon Grimes had to sit out due to his knee injury, but a pair of his future Ohio State teammates participated in the Under Armour All-America game on Sunday afternoon.

Playing alongside many other highly sought after prospects, OSU commits Marcus Williamson and Isaiah Pryor were among the list of standout recruits to take the field during the ESPN televised event.

Seeing time in the secondary, Williamson finished the game with one tackle while his IMG Academy (FL) partner in crime Pryor had two total tackles to help their Team Armour squad pick up the win over Team Highlight, 24-21.

Former Ohio State turned Pittsburgh commit Todd Sibley of Akron Archbishop Hoban accounted for 12 total yards of offense and a rushing touchdown in the Team Armour victory.

Smith announces plans

Even though L’Christian “Blue” Smith has offers to suit up on the hardwood at the next level, the Huber Heights Wayne product won’t take that route.

At what shouldn’t come to much of a surprise, the four-star wide receiver took to his Twitter page over the Holiday weekend to let the world know of his plans of strictly playing college football.

The time has come...!! #Decisions pic.twitter.com/1DOJjxt0kC

— BLUE SMITH (@bluesmith_) January 1, 2017

Considered the third athlete and 101st overall prospect in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Smith has earned scholarships from programs across the country. One of the top 2018 recruiting targets for the Buckeyes and many others, Michigan State, Michigan, Alabama and Penn State are just a few of the schools currently pursuing the 6-foot-6 205-pound All-Ohio selection.

Quick Hits

  • Class of 2018 five-star defensive end Micah Parsons might be verbally committed to Penn State at the moment, but that doesn’t mean he’s done with the recruiting process. On Saturday, the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native named a top six of PSU, Ohio State, Michigan, Florida State, Georgia and USC.
  • Parsons wasn’t the only soon-to-be senior to release his leaders on New Year’s Eve. Four-star tight end Jeremy Ruckert also let the cat out of the bag. While a March visit to Notre Dame could switch things up, Ruckert, who’s locked in over 25 scholarships so far, is currently considering taking his talents to either Ohio State, Alabama, Florida State, Michigan, or Wisconsin.
