Tate Martell isn’t the only quarterback in the Buckeyes class of 2017.
U.S. Army All-American and Ohio State early enrollee Tate Martell isn’t the only quarterback in the Buckeyes class of 2017. While the Bishop Gorman (NV) standout might be on scholarship it looks like another signal caller will get a chance to wear the Scarlet and Grey as a preferred walk-on.
Announcing his plans on national signing day, Kory Curtis of Island Coast High School in Cape Coral, Florida, accepted his walk-on opportunity at Ohio State after recently visiting the Columbus campus.

“I talked to Erin Hodges and the recruiting coordinator Katie (Plageman). They were excited to have me and they treated me very well and made me feel like I was at home on my visit this past weekend” said the 6’4 225-pound Curtis , who chose Ohio State over options at Southeastern, Ava Maria, Hutchinson Community College, Colorado, and Florida Atlantic University.
Curtis had the chance to play closer to his home in the sunshine state, but felt in the end the blend of athletics and academics at the Ohio State University was just entirely too much to pass up on.
“I think it's the best football and academic combination school in the nation. I love the football program and the education Ohio State has to offer. The connections you would make there is better than any other school in the nation.”
While its definitely a lot easier said than done, over the last few years a number of current and former Ohio State walk-on athletes have seen game action during their career with the Buckeyes. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of players such as Nate Ebner, Craig Fada and Joe Burger, Curtis would like to keep that tradition alive and well.
“What made it right with me is that the coaches will treat every one the same no matter if you are a scholarship kid or not. They will push you to be your best everyday.” He said.
“I am ready to be able to make my mark on the best football program in the nation and try to work for a scholarship because I feel that I'm more than capable of earning one.”
Although playing time at Ohio State isn’t guaranteed, Curtis, who plans to study neuroscience while at OSU, has shown he can make plays with the ball in his hands. During his four seasons on the high school level at Island Coast, he accounted for over 5,400 total passing yards and 59 touchdowns through the air for the Gators.
