C Jerry Lucas (National Champ, CBB HOF, NBA HOF)

THAT'S A LOT OF MOOLAH. In 1962, Jerry Lucas signed his first professional contract with the ABL's Cleveland Pipers, featuring $10,000 of compensation per season and an additional $40,000 in stock options – a pretty lucrative deal then. However, the Pipers later disbanded after an ABL league merger with the NBA, sending Lucas to play his official rookie season for the Cincinnati Royals.

Over 60 years later, another lucrative deal involving Lucas has occurred, as The Columbus Dispatch's Rob Oller reported the Ohio State men's basketball legend had his Topps NBA “rookie” card sell for $24,000 more than Lucas' contract with the Pipers/Royals: $84,000 at the PWCC Marketplace Weekly Auction on June 4.

Cincinnati Royals forward Jerry Lucas (16) in action during his rookie year against the Los Angeles Lakers at the Cincinnati Gardens.

After the sale, a PWCC press release stated, "This auction sale shatters Lucas’ previous record, which was set at $8,511 in May. The reason for the record here is in large part due to scarcity in the quality of the card. This is one of only two examples of Lucas’ Topps rookie card to earn PSA’s Gem Mint 10 designation.”

I won't pretend to understand what PSA's Gem Mint 10 designation means, but that card must be rare and in fantastic condition for someone to bid $84,000 to win an auction. For comparison, most of Lucas' rookie cards cost between $11 and $4,000, depending on their condition. Congratulations to the winner for having more disposable income than I could ever hope to have. You are winning at life.

Romanowski admits using steroids

Soooo let me get this straight. The IRS can only complain that a guy " neglected, refused or failed" to pay his taxes to the tune of $15MM going back over 25 years?

What the fuck are the rest of us doing paying taxes then? I mean, if they aren't going to seize everything you own, throw you out into the street and go after you for criminal tax evasion, why fear them? Was it a strenuous complaint? Strongly worded? Make someone feel bad?

I'm at a loss here.
They reported their income correctly, so it will be up to negotiation or the courts to decide if the deductions were legitimate. So, no, they can't seize anything based on the allegations.

Why I'm Leave-ing Buckeye Planet (Hiking, Gardening, Nature Stuff Discussion)

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, Texas (KVIA) - A father and his two stepsons were hiking in the Marufo Vega Trail on June 23 in the extreme heat with temperatures of 119 degrees.

The Big Bend National Park's Communications Center staff says they received a emergency assistance call after the youngest teen fell ill and lost consciousness at 6 p.m.

According to a release from the national park, the father left the trail heading towards their vehicle to try to find help. The older brother tried to carry his brother back to the trailhead.

Park Rangers and U.S. Border Patrol Agents were able to reach the area at 7:30 p.m. and found the 14 year old boy dead.

The rescue team searched for the father and found that his vehicle had crashed over an embankment at the Boquillas Overlook with no signs of life.

University Athletic Departments Revenue & Spending

Call me crazy, but is #1 in expenses really a bragging right.
I guess orgs like this have a mandate to spend what they bring in, but it just seems counterintuitive to my small blue collar brain.
This is for all sports so given the number of sports and the fact only 1-2 of them are profitable the math checks out.

They also kick some back to the school after servicing all debt (facilities) if I am not mistaken

St. John Arena (Official Thread)

That was the school’s fault. They did not include the St John game in the season tickets or scarlet&gray pass, but never bothered to mention it. It was the day before the game when we realized we didn’t actually have tickets to the game and had to go buy them. The year before when the Cleveland State game was played there and they included the game with the season tickets, the place was rocking all night.
Sounds like maybe they wanted to make sure they had a reason to stop playing in St. Johns.
