Maryland Terrapins extend basketball coach Mark Turgeon through 2025-26 season

Maryland agreed with basketball coach Mark Turgeon on a contract extension through the 2025-26 season on Wednesday.

Turgeon has led the Terrapins to five NCAA tournament appearances during his decade at the school. Most recently, Maryland reached the second round this season before losing to Alabama.

"We believe in Coach Turgeon and are excited about what the future holds for Maryland basketball," athletic director Damon Evans said. "Coach is fully committed to Maryland, and we are in agreement of the expectations for our program as we move forward. Coach and the staff have already been at work recruiting and building on our recent success."

Turgeon's deal includes what the university calls "revised financial terms." He was previously extended through 2023 in 2016 when Maryland made it to the Sweet 16.

"I would not have moved my family and left a place that I loved very dearly if I did not think this was a place that we should be winning national championships as a top-10 job, and that's what I believe this is, and that was the vision that (athletic director) Damon (Evans) gave to me from the start, which was this is the University of Maryland — this is an unbelievable job in an unbelievable area," Willard told reporters. "And as I've very quickly and my family have very quickly found out, with unbelievable people. We've been so welcomed in just the two days that we've been working together. I would just like to say, Damon, thank you so much for the tremendous opportunity that you have given my family and I, and we will work every day to make sure that we are competing for national championships every day. I have to say — I would like to thank my Seton Hall family. I was there for 12 years, and it was home. I get emotional talking about Seton Hall. It was hard to leave."

Willard then revealed he was offered other positions, but wanted the right fit.

"This year, it had to be for the right job," Willard said. "I got offered four other jobs this year. I was very blessed. Nothing was the University of Maryland, and I really believe and mean this (when) I say this — this is a top-10 college basketball program."

Maryland's Kevin Willard hired as Villanova head coach

Maryland's Kevin Willard has been hired as Villanova's new coach, ending more than a week of speculation.

Maryland just completed one of its best seasons in the past 20 years, earning a 4-seed in the NCAA tournament and making a run to the Sweet 16 before falling to top-seeded Florida. The Terrapins finished 27-9 overall and 14-6 in the Big Ten and were ranked in the top 10 in most predictive metrics. After a 1-3 start to Big Ten play, Maryland lost just four games to Big Ten opponents the rest of the season by a combined nine points.

Willard spent three seasons in College Park, going 65-39 with two NCAA tournament appearances.

He made headlines before Maryland's first-round NCAA tournament game against Grand Canyon when he essentially broke the news of Maryland athletic director Damon Evans leaving for SMU and explained why he hasn't signed a new contract in College Park.

"I need to make fundamental changes to the program," Willard said. "That's what I'm focused on right now. That's why probably a deal hasn't got done because I want to see -- I need to see fundamental changes done. I want this program to be great. I want it to be the best in the country, I want to win a national championship, but there's things that need to change.

"I need to make sure that we are where we are with NIL, and rev share is not where we've been with NIL over the past two years. We've been one of the worst, if not lowest, in the NIL in the last two years. So, that's first and foremost. I also have to make a fundamental change where I can do the things that I want to do with my program. I wanted to spend an extra night in New York this year to celebrate Christmas with my team and I was told that we can't do that because it's too expensive. So, I don't know how we can be a top-tier program and I can't spend one extra night in New York because it's too expensive."

As Maryland knocked off Grand Canyon and Colorado State to advance to Willard's first Sweet 16 and the first for the Terps since 2016, the head coach's message didn't change. He acknowledged after Maryland's Sweet 16 loss to Florida on Thursday that he didn't know his next step.

"I don't know what I'm doing," Willard said. "I'll be honest with you. I haven't talked to my agent. I haven't talked to my wife."

Maryland is hiring Texas A&M coach Buzz Williams to succeed Kevin Willard, the school announced Tuesday. The Aggies coach will take over a program without a sitting athletic director after Maryland AD Damon Evans left for the same job at SMU last month.

"In leading this program, I promise to uphold the history of Maryland basketball and make Terp Nation proud with the men who represent this institution," Williams said in a press release from the school.

The former Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and Marquette coach has a 373-228 career record. Williams spent the last six seasons in College Station and guided the Texas A&M program to three consecutive berths in the NCAA Tournament. Texas A&M lost to No. 5 seed Michigan in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament last month.

"We are thrilled to bring a coach of the caliber of Buzz Williams to the University of Maryland," Maryland interim athletic director Colleen Sorem said in the school's press release. "His incredible record of success at three prominent basketball programs speaks for itself, but we were equally impressed with his tireless work ethic and his dedication to building a program the right way. He embraces the high expectations here at Maryland and we are all excited to get started on this new era in Maryland basketball."
