Elite recruiting has a set up fierce positional battles.

Last season, the Buckeyes were able to make the College Football Playoff as the youngest team in a power five conference — returning only six starters from their immensely talented 2015 squad. With only a handful (elite) players moving on to the NFL, Ohio State will be in a different spot than they were last season. This year, they’re returning eight starters on offense and seven starters on defense — tied for the second most returning starters in the Big Ten.

With spring practice kicking off last week, there aren’t as many positional battles for starting jobs, but rather to crack the two-deep. Let’s check out the biggest positional battles as we get deeper into spring practice.

Offense

Quarterback

Joe Burrow vs. Dwayne Haskins

With J.T. Barrett returning for his final season, the backup job will come down to Burrow and Haskins. With a mobile quarterback who runs the ball as much as Barrett does (much to the chagrin of Buckeye fans), the backup is one play away from stepping behind center.

Last season, Joe Burrow won the job over true freshman Dwayne Haskins but Urban Meyer repeatedly praised Haskins throughout his first season, even labeling him as the “best QB at his age I’ve ever seen.” High praise for the Maryland native.

Not only is this spot important for 2017, but it’s even bigger for 2018. With Tate Martell set to redshirt in 2017 and 5-star dual-threat Emory Jones arriving in 2018, there will be a logjam at this position next season. If Burrow loses the job to Haskins this season, will he transfer after the season? This is a huge spring for both signal callers, both on the field for 2017 and for their respective futures in 2018.

Running back

Antonio Williams vs. JK Dobbins

Here’s another battle to crack the two-deep. We all know Mike Weber had a tremendous first season where he showed power and some quickness (a surprising attribute we didn’t know about). Ultimately though, Weber is a two-down back who excels as north-south ball carrier, rather than a guy who can get to the edge.

This is where true freshman JK Dobbins comes in. Dobbins is a true tailback, rather than a H-back, who brings more speed and quickness than Weber or Antonio Williams. Williams is a big-bodied back who will bring the hammer to opposing defenses. With Dobbins already on campus as an early enrollee, he will be able to show off his catching ability and different skillset to running backs coach Tony Alford.

X-receiver

Binjimen Victor vs. Austin Mack

Austin Mack got all the headlines last spring when he was the first freshman to get his black stripe taken off, but it looked like he hit the freshman wall as the season progressed as he never got on the field as a main member of the wide receiver rotation. On the other hand, Binjimen Victor was noticed as a long, very skinny true freshman who looked like he would definitely redshirt to bulk up, but ended up seeing time late in the season — and against Clemson — which has most fans and writers penciling him in for a starting job in 2018.

Not so fast my friend. Mack is Meyer’s most talented receiver recruit since he’s been at Ohio State and is a better route runner than Victor. But on the other hand, Victor brings something that no other Buckeye wideout possesses: height. Sure, both will definitely see the field and Kevin Wilson will find a way to get both on the field at the same time, but it will be an interesting battle between two stud sophomores.

Right guard

Demetrius Knox vs. Matthew Burrell vs. Josh Myers vs. Malcolm Pridgeon

With Billy Price kicking over to center to replace Rimington Award winner Pat Elflein, the right guard spot is the lone opening on the offensive line. Demetrius Knox looks like he has the inside track from Meyer, but he hardly looked like he belonged when he subbed in for Michael Jordan in the Fiesta Bowl.

C1C4h5yUAAAb4y6.jpg

Knox has a handful of talented guys behind him, with Matthew Burrell, the highly touted Josh Myers and Malcolm Pridgeon, who was a highly touted JUCO player who was expected to be the starter at right tackle before suffering a season ending injury. With the amount of pulling that Meyer’s guards do throughout the game, athleticism may win this battle.

Defense

Defensive end

Tyquan Lewis and Sam Hubbard

Nick Bosa vs. Jalyn Holmes vs. Jonathon Cooper vs. Rashod Berry vs. Chase Young (not on campus yet)

This isn’t as much of a battle as the other positions because Larry Johnson does a great job of mixing and matching, creating sub-packages and rotating players throughout the game. Luckily for Johnson, he has arguably the most talented positional group on the team with an abundance of talented vets, mixed with a barrage of highly touted youngsters. Get this: Nick Bosa was the lone Buckeye to crack Pro Football Focus’ “Top 25 Returning Players in College Football” list... and he doesn’t even start.

Cornerback

Denzel Ward vs. Kendall Sheffield vs. Jeffrey Okudah vs. Shaun Wade

Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley are both headed to the NFL as projected first round picks, so this will be the first time that Meyer and Kerry Coombs will have to start two new corners since Meyer has been at Ohio State. Luckily for them, they arguably have the most talented defensive back recruiting class already on campus, competing for two starting jobs.

Denzel Ward is the elder in this group and should solidify one corner spot, while 5-stars Jeffrey Okudah and Shaun Wade, and former Alabama corner Kendall Sheffield will be battling it out for the other spot. This should be the fiercest positional battle of them all.

Free safety

Erick Smith vs. Jordan Fuller

There are some pretty big shoes to fill at the free safety spot. Malik Hooker came out of nowhere to win last year’s opening left by Vonn Bell, and all he did was make himself into a future top-10 pick in this year’s draft and draw comparisons to future NFL Hall of Famer Ed Reed.

Erick Smith came to Ohio State way back in 2014 as a high 4-star U.S. Army All-American, but injuries have kept him off the field. Jordan Fuller arrived on campus last season and surprisingly cracked the two-deep and got time as a true freshman. As we saw with Bell and Hooker, the free safety position in this position is designed for players with range, ball skills and elite instincts, so may the better athlete win this one.

The Buckeyes avenge their sweep by the Badgers earlier in the season

No. 16 Wisconsin might be Ohio State’s biggest competition for an at large NCAA tournament spot. If Friday night was any indication, No. 15 Ohio State has the upper hand in that race.

The No. 15 Buckeyes blew by the No. 16 Badgers by a score of 5-1 in Madison. The Bucks are coming off a split with Michigan State that hurt their at large chances, but a multiple goal win over your chief competition for one of the last at large spots in the tournament sure helps some of those wounds heal.

The Badgers beat OSU 3-1 in Columbus and 3-2 in overtime in Madison Square Garden back in January to give them the season series lead but Ohio State came up with the key win on Friday night when they needed it most and gained a little momentum heading into the conference tournament next week in Detroit.

OSU came out flying in this one and didn’t look back, scoring twice in the first to go into intermission up 2-0. Drew Brevig started out the scoring with just his second of the year at 8:54 of the first. It came unassisted on a redirected shot from the point. David Gust would double the lead with his 16th of the year at 11:31, from Brevig and Sasha Larocque.

In the second, Wisconsin would finally score one. But Ohio State did them one better and scored twice. Dakota Joshua scored his 11th of the year at 7:04 of the second. Gust had the lone assist. Matt Ustaski’s fifth of the year cut the OSU lead to 3-1, but the Buckeyes gained their three goal cushion back just under five minutes later as Miguel Fidler scored his fourth of the year from Mason Jobst at 14:22. It was Jobst’s 32nd assist of the year.

Jobst added an insurance goal in the third on the powerplay to fully make sure Wisconsin was dead and buried. His 17th came from Matthew Weis and gave Jobst his second point on the night. He’s up to 49 on the season. R.J. Umberger was the last Ohio State skater to have more, with 53 way back in 2003.

Ohio State came into the game the nation’s leader in powerplay percentage at 31.9%, but only went 1-for-5 in this one, with Jobst’s late insurance goal being the lone marker. The penalty kill killed off five of six Wisconsin opportunities.

Matt Tomkins got the start in goal and continued to make his case to start in the Big Ten Tournament next week as he stopped all but one shot even as Ohio State was outshot 29-18 on the night. That’s about as much as you can ask for from your goalie and with Ohio State’s high scoring offense, they’ll win pretty much any game their goalie plays like that.

You’d still like OSU to attack at even strength more even up four goals, as their goaltending has been anything but consistent this season, but it’s hard to argue when your team wins 5-1. There could be a bigger danger of a team coming back when it’s Minnesota you’re facing instead of Wisconsin, but you can’t argue with the results in this one.

The Buckeyes will take a result like this any night they can get it and they’ll look to double the pleasure in a rematch with Wisconsin on Saturday night in Madison at 8pm.

The Buckeyes imploded just three outs away from an upset victory.

Ohio State baseball snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on Friday night, giving up six runs in the bottom of the ninth to Florida Gulf Coast to lose 10-9. Management of the bullpen in the ballgame by Buckeye head coach Greg Beals is going to be questioned for a long time to come.

Needing just three outs to secure an upset of the No. 24 team in the country, Beals elected to send junior right-hander Seth Kinker out to the mound for his fourth inning of relief. Kinker has been Ohio State’s most reliable reliever since he set foot on campus, but he ran out of gas, giving up four runs without recording an out in the final frame. Closer Yianni Pavlopoulos couldn’t stop the bleeding after entering the game, and a double play that couldn’t be completed allowed the winning run to score.

The Eagles now own a nine-game winning streak, while the Buckeyes fell to 5-7 on the season. The loss overshadowed an excellent offensive performance for the scarlet and gray.

Tyler Cowles led the offensive charge for Ohio State, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and three runs batted in. Noah McGowan homered and scored a pair of runs and Bo Coolen had a 2-for-3 night with an RBI and two runs scored, as the Buckeyes rapped out 13 hits and saw five players have multi-hit games.

Also of note was a 3-for-4 performance with a pair of runs scored by sophomore Jacob Barnwell and a pair of RBI doubles from senior co-captain Jalen Washington. The scarlet and gray went 7-for-17 in the ballgame with runners in scoring position, and 7-for-15 with two outs, putting together the quality clutch at-bats that Beals has been preaching.

Redshirt senior Jake Post was on the bump for Ohio State after looking extremely sharp in his first three starts of the season. The right-hander, who has issued just four walks in his first 16 innings pitched in 2017, yielded four in this one, driving his pitch count up and limiting his length. Still, Post left the game with a lead, having tossed four innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits.

Post’s counterpart for FGCU, senior Garrett Anderson, had his difficulties as well. The righty gave up five runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work, striking out four and walking one. Reliever Christian Townsend also got tagged for three runs in his 1.2 innings on the hill.

Trouble found Post almost immediately, when after striking out FGCU’s leadoff man Matt Reardon, he gave up a single to Julio Gonzalez and a walk to Nick Levine. Jake Smith followed with a chopper to Coolen, and the Ohio State first baseman made an errant throw to second trying to get the runner, allowing Gonzalez to score and Levine to advance to third. Eli Lovell then singled home Levine for a 2-0 lead.

After a lineout and a walk, the Eagles had the bases loaded with two outs, threatening to blow things open. But Post hung tough and struck out Alex Brait to escape with no further damage.

The Buckeyes managed to get one back in the second. Coolen worked a one-out walk against Anderson, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Brady Cherry sent a hard grounder to Reardon at second, Coolen was standing on third. That’s when Cowles got jammed on an inside fastball and fought off the most improbable infield bloop single this writer has ever seen. It goes down as a liner in the scorebook, though, and made it a 2-1 game.

The two pitchers kept things quiet the next couple of innings until Florida Gulf Coast’s No. 9 hitter, center fielder Gage Morey, sent a Post offering over the wall in right field, his first home run of the season. A solo shot, it pushed the Eagles’ advantage to 3-1.

Once again, Ohio State came right back to score. Barnwell collected his second hit of the night with one down in the top of the fifth, and moved up to second when a pickoff attempt from Anderson got a away. The Buckeye catcher advanced to third on a groundout by Tre’ Gantt and came home to score when Washington delivered an RBI double off the wall in right field.

Ohio State wasn’t done, either. After McGowan was hit by a pitch, Zach Ratcliff did what he’s been doing since game one: driving in runs. A single to left brought Washington plateward to tie the game at three, Ratcliff’s team-leading 10th run batted in on the year. Coolen followed that up by ripping a single to right to score McGowan, giving the Buckeyes the lead and ending Anderson’s night.

Townsend relieved for FGCU and couldn’t hold the deficit to one. Cherry hit a rope that was knocked down by Smith at third base, but the throw to first wasn’t in time, allowing Ratcliff to score the fourth run of the inning and give Ohio State a 5-3 lead.

The Eagles trimmed that lead to one in the bottom half of the frame. Post walked Smith to lead things off, at which point his pitch count had reached 87. The Buckeyes called on Curtiss Irving out of the bullpen, and after a walk and a sacrifice bunt, FGCU had a pair of runners in scoring position with just one out. Spencer Levine then brought Smith home with a groundout to McGowan at second.

After a scoreless sixth for both teams, Ohio State tacked on another run. With one down in the seventh, McGowan crushed his second longball of the season, a deep shot to left-center that was never in doubt off Townsend.

Ratcliff followed with a walk and Coolen singled, forcing the Eagles to go to the pen once again. Parker Hamilton took the ball and once again, an FGCU reliever couldn’t stop the bleeding. Hamilton struck out Cherry, but Cowles scorched a ball to the gap in left-center to plate both runners and give the Buckeyes an 8-4 advantage.

Barnwell picked up his third single of the game in the eighth, and Washington struck again, doubling down the right field line to extend the lead to 9-4. But the implosion was coming, and all Ohio State could do was endure it.

A schedule change has moved up game two of the three-game set on Saturday. Originally scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET, first pitch will now take place at 1:00 p.m. ET in Fort Myers.

The 19 year old forward should come in to help the Buckeyes next season

Nick Schilkey and David Gust graduating, along with a few other potential forward departures, could leave Ohio State hockey thin upfront next year. But they look to have added another reinforcement for next season today, as Quinn Preston has committed to Ohio State’s mens hockey team.

Preston will be a 20 year old forward when he officially joins Ohio State this fall, and has put up 31 points in 47 games in his first USHL season for the Dubuque Fighting Saints. OSU already has three other Fighting Saints on their roster currently, Wyatt Ege, Christian Frey and Sasha Larocque, so it looks like the Buckeyes are further strengthening a pipeline that’s brought them a number of current contributors.

Prior to his time in Dubuque, Preston put up 34 points in 59 games in the NAHL, and 128 in 85 games in the USHS system. He seems to have finally blossomed at a later age for Dubuque, as he currently ranks fifth on his team in scoring and is shooting only 13.5%, lower than all but one player who has scored more points on the Fighting Saints, leading one to believe his production isn’t a fluke.

He checks in at only 5’11, 170lbs according to EliteProspects, so there’s still some room to grow for Preston. He doesn’t have NHL size or anything close to it currently, and doesn’t seem to have the skill to make up for that lack of size fully, but what Ohio State might have here is a late bloomer who is unheralded and comes into college more physically strong than younger players even with a slighter frame.

It’s worked for the Mason Jobst and Luke Storks of the world, and Quinn is no smaller than either of them. There will be ample forward opportunities next season in Columbus with two top six forwards graduating, so there’s no reason someone who’s shown the late scoring blossoming of Preston can’t come in and be an overage middle six contributor and potential top six forward by the time he graduates from OSU.

The Trenton, Michigan native won’t be far from home, and I’m sure he’s going to love sticking it to Michigan and Michigan State and make them wonder why they didn’t go after him.

Another member of the Elliott family will dawn the Scarlet and Gray.

“However, Urban Meyer swayed Ezekiel Elliott to leave home behind... with the addition of Lailah, it appears the entire family’s conversion is complete.”

Chris Bils on Ezekiel Elliott’s sister, Lailah, signing with Ohio State’s track and field team, Landof10.com

First, it was Ezekiel Elliott leaving behind his Missouri roots in favor of becoming a Buckeye. Now, it appears that his sister, Lailah, will be doing the same. Lailah Elliott made the decision to commit to the Ohio State track and field team after making a visit to see the campus earlier in the week.

Excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at THE Ohio State University! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/urrmhkPnN9

The Elliott family has had success on the athletic platform. Lailah earned all-state honors in track and field, and was a top three finisher in the long jump, triple jump and high jump, according to stlhighschoolsports.com.

Lailah’s parents were athletes at Missouri; her dad played football for the Tigers in the late 1980s, and her mom was a track star — racing to all-conference honors, according to ESPN.

Then you have Zeke, who torched defenses en route to the Buckeyes winning the inaugural College Football Playoff in 2015 before becoming a rookie sensation with ‘America’s Team’, the Dallas Cowboys.

Here’s to continued success for Lailah as she represents the Scarlet and Gray in both athletics and academics.

Ohio State baseball has second hardest strength of schedule

Early Friday morning, a new batch of baseball rankings came out via Boyd’s World. While the Buckeyes hold a 5-6 record to begin the season, it should also be noted that they have the second hardest strength of schedule on the field. The hardest strength of schedule belongs to fellow Big Ten conference member Nebraska, who also boasts a 5-6 overall record.

In terms of overall rankings, the highest rated Big Ten squad belongs to the Michigan State Spartans — who come in at No. 16. The second highest ranked squad in the B1G is Michigan, slipping into the top 25 at the 23rd spot. Ohio State shows up at No. 57 on the overall ranking list.

There is some good news, though: The Buckeyes can improve their ranking this weekend. OSU goes on the road to take on Florida Gulf Coast for a three-game series. Coming into the game, FGCU is 12-2 overall and holds is ranked No. 20.

If Florida Gulf Coast sounds familiar, it’s because their basketball team made a deep run in the NCAA Tournament a few years ago.

The first of the games takes place on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET. You can catch video of the game at this link. Saturday’s contest is slated for 6 p.m. ET, and Sunday’s matinee starts at 1 p.m. ET.

“The Buckeyes head into the weekend riding a 41-match win streak. UC San Diego and UC Irvine come out of one of the most competitive volleyball conferences in the country,”

Aliyyah Jackson, The Lantern

Transitioning to the volleyball circuit, the Buckeyes are the top ranked team in the country with a record of 18-0.

This weekend, two more opponents from the West Coast come to Columbus, Ohio to try and snap the Buckeyes win streak that has now hit a remarkable 41 matches. On Friday, UC San Diego makes the trip to St. John Arena to face the Bucks at 7 p.m. ET; on Saturday, UC Irvine tries their hand against OSU — that game also has a start time of 7 p.m. ET.

San Diego’s squad hasn’t faced Ohio State since 2011, but the last time both squads met, the Buckeyes came out on the losing end. There is some good news, though, on the Buckeyes facing UC San Diego at St. John Arena: OSU hasn’t lost to them at home. Winning the prior two home meetings, the Buckeyes have a chance for a trifecta on Friday night.

Last season was the last meeting between UC Irvine and the Buckeyes -- which resulted in an Ohio State win, 3-1. Overall, however, UC Irvine owns a slightly better record than the Bucks (6-4). According to an Ohio State press release, the Anteaters have never trekked to the Midwest to face OSU. So, it should be an interesting matchup that unfolds at SJA on Saturday night.

Ohio State’s win streak has already claimed the honor of being the longest in MIVA (conference) history. The previous longest win streak belonged to Loyola, who won 40 matches during the 2014-2015 seasons. Winning sets have been the name-of-the-game for the Bucks, who have taken 83 percent of them (123-of-149) during this magical run. Two wins this weekend would push the Buckeyes closer to UCLA’s record of a 47-match win streak, which was set on two occasions between the late-1970s and mid-1980s.

Both matches can be viewed on BTN Plus ($).

Don’t miss where your favorite Buckeye lands this offseason.

The 2016 NFL season was huge for former Ohio State stars, with the league featuring up to 53 Buckeyes at any given time. Throughout the year, players were released, traded and injured — A.J. Hawk even retired -- all while the rookie class broke franchise and league records and earned postseason honors.

Now that the season is over, moves are being made. Those players that were released are hoping for a chance with a new team, and others could be subject to trade. There are plenty of Buckeyes who are looking for new contracts during free agency, including two restricted and six unrestricted free agent.

This is also the last chance for several prominent Buckeyes to snag a roster spot before having to accept their career ended early. Players like Boom Herron and DeVier Posey have bounced from team-to-team during their time in the league, and others like James Laurinaitis and Mike Nugent might consider filing retirement papers should interest from teams be lower than expected.

Here at Land-Grant Holy Land, we’ll keep you updated on all the latest moves:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the former OSU QB is headed to the nation’s capital.

Former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor entered the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, and the Cleveland Browns didn’t re-sign the wide receiver in a surprising move. The market was hot for the 1,000-plus yard wideout, and ended up signing a new one-year deal with Washington, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Washington needed to lock in some reliable targets for quarterback Kirk Cousins, and having lost both of the team’s 1,000-yard receivers — Desean Jackson and Pierre Garcon — they set their eyes on Pryor. He was seen boarding Washington’s private jet Thursday evening just hours before they fired their general manager.

The MMQB’s Albert Breer reported that the deal was worth $8 million, the total that the Browns had reportedly wanted to pay to bring Pryor back to Cleveland.

Redskins get Terrelle Pryor in the fold at 1 year, $8 million. Shows Browns were right not to tag him. But still ...

— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) March 10, 2017

Ahead of negotiations, Pryor reportedly informed his agents that he wanted to stay in Cleveland, but the Browns wanted to keep him at $8 million a year, and the Buckeye was reportedly looking for $10 million-plus. Instead, the team signed Rams receiver Kenny Britt at the opening of free agency, leaving Pryor free to hit the market.

Despite the Browns losing in historical fashion last season, their one bright spot on offense was with the quarterback-turned-wideout. In his second season at his new position, Pryor finally saw consistent targets on 900 snaps. The team could’ve probably used him under center — with a quarterback crisis that kept replaying itself every other week — but were happy to have the 6’4, 223-pound player on the receiving end of things.

Pryor finished the 2016 season with 1,007 yards on 77 receptions — out of 140 targets -- and four touchdowns. This past season was also the first in which the wideout played in all 16 regular season games — including his time as a quarterback in Oakland.

The season was bound to include several firsts for the wideout, when as early as Week 3, he was sending a shipment of game-worn items to Canton for enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During the third game of the season against the Dolphins, Pryor became the first player to have at least 120 receiving yards, 30 passing yards, and 20 rushing yards in a single game since Frank Gifford in 1959.

Even though Pryor’s NFL career has been anything but ordinary, it’s also been far from extraordinary, which makes the fact that he now claims TWO exhibits in the Hall of Fame a bit surprising. His first feature was thanks to his record-breaking 93-yard quarterback run, during his time as an Oakland Raider — meaning he has now made the Hall of Fame as both a quarterback and wide receiver.

Pryor’s early NFL career came off the heels of a quick departure from Ohio State — tattoogate, anyone? -- and a five game suspension to start his rookie season. He was forced to enter the supplemental draft due to the strange conditions, and ended up with the Oakland Raiders for two seasons. He was briefly traded to the Seahawks, before ultimately missing the entire 2014 season -- he then went on to short stints in Kansas City and Cincinnati.

His reemergence as a receiver resuscitated Pryor’s failing football career, and the results won’t have anyone questioning whether the position change was worth it.

Kevin Wilson is going to bring a variety of formations with a high-tempo to Columbus.

From 2006-2010, new Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson was the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma. During that time period at Oklahoma he orchestrated one of the most explosive offenses in the country, including the 2008 team that scored over 48 points 10 times and put up over 60 points in succession over their final five regular season games. With an uptempo spread offense, Wilson knows how to put points on the scoreboard.

When watching the 2010 Red River Shootout between Wilson’s Sooners and the Texas Longhorns, Oklahoma’s opening drive was a scripted thing of beauty. He put the quarterback under center, in shotgun and the Pistol formation, and kept his foot on the pedal throughout the drive, which kept the Longhorn defense on their heels.

Here are the multiple wrinkles on the 13 play, 83-yard drive that took only 4:09 off the clock before Demarco Murray reached the end zone. Tempo. Tempo. Tempo.

Quarterback under center

under_the_center.jpg

With the Sooners’ coming up short on second down, they came out under center in 22 personnel (2 RB, 2 TE, 1 WR) and handed the ball off to the fullback on a dive to move the chains. With the fullback position basically extinct in college football, this would be unlikely to see — especially at Ohio State — but it shows that Wilson is not against playing under center in short yardage situations. It gets the snap to the quarterback much quicker and the ball carrier gets going downhill. They could utilize a tight end such as AJ Alexander at fullback and have him lead the way for Mike Weber in short yardage situations.

After picking up the first down on the play above, the offense hurried up to the line of scrimmage — in only 12 seconds from when the fullback handed the ball to the referee — and hiked the ball. Landry Jones (quarterback) was still under center and ran play action to Murray -- completely fooling the defense — which got the inside linebacker on Murray in man coverage. Murray feasted on this mismatch to move the chains on back-to-back plays. It was an easy throw for Landry, which would be a high-percentage throw for J.T. Barrett.

Make things simpler for Barrett

3_7_2017_3_43_18_PM.jpg

Speaking of Barrett, here’s an example of Wilson making things easy for his quarterback. First, the motion from the tailback holds the backside coverage guys, which limits the defense from flowing towards the quarterback’s eyes. Second, the route concept on the right side forces the zone defender into making a decision: does he sit down in the zone and play the running back who’s coming at him? Or does he fall further into the zone and play the receiver? The corner chooses the running back, which leaves the receiver on the hitch pattern for a nice gain on first down. This is an easy read and throw for Barrett to make on a consistent basis.

WR Screen(!)

Here’s a play that Ohio State fans have been looking for since Tom Herman left the team: the wide receiver screen. Wilson made a living off of perimeter screens at Oklahoma, most notably to Ryan Broyles — who shattered the FBS career reception record. Under Wilson from 2008 to 2010, Broyles secured 266 receptions for 3,429 yards and 35 touchdowns. With the abundance of quick receivers who may not be the best or most precise route runners, expect screens on the perimeter to be back under Kevin Wilson.

Pistol Formation

Here’ the Oklahoma offense in the Pistol formation with a second back flanked to the right of Jones. Wilson is a huge proponent of the Diamond formation (which we will eventually introduce) and this version of the Pistol is very similar. Out of the Pistol and the Diamond formations, the possibilities are endless. In fact, one would recognize the Pistol as a common formation that the Buckeyes run a good amount of their offense out of. With this wrinkle, Wilson can get Weber and Demario McCall in the backfield at the same time, giving the defense multiple options respect, along with one of the backs likely blocking for the ball carrier. The possibilities are endless here.

Consistent Tempo

Even with the variety of formations and play calls throughout the 13 plays on the opening drive, the tempo that the offense played with is the best sign for the future of the Ohio State offense. Wilson was able to confuse the defense and get the ball to multiple players, all while keeping the pedal down. After the run out of Pistol, Jones got the offense on the ball and the ball hiked with the play clock still at 27 seconds. Murray got to the edge and the Sooners were up 6-0 at the end of the 13-play, 4:09 drive that drove 83-yards down the field. Wilson was able to wear down the defense by throwing the kitchen sink at them on the first possession and they were able to take home the Red River Shootout.

***

“There’s just things that we have to work on and [Wilson's] the perfect guy, him and Ryan Day and our offense staff to get them fixed.” Urban Meyer knows he picked the right guy to fix the offense, almost the same offense that was shutout by Clemson on New Year’s Eve.

With an experienced quarterback behind center and an array of elite skill players for Wilson put in a place to succeed, expect the Ohio State offense to look like a well-oiled machine in 2017 — something they hasn’t been seen since Tom Herman was sitting in the coaches booth.

What better way to celebrate National Mario Day?

In limited action last fall, Ohio State freshman running back Demario McCall excited Buckeye fans with his speed, agility, and video game-like moves. So it seems only fitting that to honor every Gen-Xer’s favorite holiday, National Mario Day, the Ohio State Football program released a video of McCall running through Mushroom Kingdom.

National Mario Day is celebrated every year on March 10th, because the day can be abbreviated “Mar10.” Clever, huh?

With Curtis Samuel now NFL-bound, many fans are looking to McCall to supply the excitement and quick-scoring ability to the offense. On 49 carries in 2016, the Ridgfield, OH native rushed for 270 yards and scored three touchdowns. He also had four receptions for 84 yards and returned three punts for 14.

McCall is expected to be the Buckeyes’ number one H-back when they open the season in Bloomington, IN on August 31.
