usa_today_9926701.0.jpg

It’s not clear yet.

Washington D.C.—The Ohio State locker room was morose and quiet. That’s not a surprise, given that Ohio State’s run in the Big Ten Tournament came to an end even quicker than fans and players expected, as Rutgers knocked off the Buckeyes, 66-57.

With the loss, Ohio State’s record falls to 17-15. The NCAA Tournament is obviously out of the question, but heading into the Rutgers game, Ohio State was projected to make the NIT, anywhere from a three to a five seed. After a bad loss, that seed line is likely to take a hit.

Earlier this evening, Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch spoke with Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith about Smith’s vote of confidence in Thad Matta, stating he’d be coaching the Buckeyes again next season. During that conversation, Smith said the following:

"We've got some postseason opportunities for these young men and hope that they perform well and then we'll have the offseason for Thad to put in place the things he feels we need to have in place to be able to get back to where we want

When I asked Matta is Ohio State would accept an NIT bid if offered, he told me he didn’t know yet.

It very well may have been just the disappointment after losing a tough game, but the mood in the Ohio State locker room wasn’t one of a team that badly wanted another chance to play.

Trevor Thompson seemed lukewarm at best if he wanted to play in the NIT. “If we do, we do,” he said. C.J. Jackson told us, “I guess so” when asked if he’d want to play in another game, given that the season didn’t end the way he wanted. Other players like Buckeye point guard JaQuan Lyle pointed out that the decision would not be theirs. Nobody was particularly clamoring for another immediate shot at redemption.

On one hand, a trip to the NIT would give additional game time experience for Ohio State’s younger players, like Andre Wesson and Micah Potter, as well as a chance to end the season on a higher note than a brutal loss to Rutgers. But if the team is banged up and not mentally engaged, it’s also easy to understand why the team might elect to pass on the trip. The crowds would be sparse, the payoff perhaps limited, and if losing to Rutgers was bad, then losing an opening round game to New Mexico State or Richmond would be damaging as well.

Ohio State will need to determine if this team would benefit, emotionally, mentally, or otherwise from additional postseason basketball. If the Buckeyes want that opportunity, they will probably get another shot. But in the immediate aftermath of a tough loss, that wasn’t clear. It’s tough to make that evaluation right after a difficult loss.

After a tough loss, two OSU players spoke about the future.

Washington D.C.—Emotions were running high following a crushing Ohio State loss to the lowest seed in the 2017 Big Ten Tournament, Rutgers. As the players struggled to process what had just happened in the 40 minutes on the court prior, given the current climate of college basketball, the inevitable look towards next season became a recurring topic amongst those most discussed about possible pro jumps.

“Yeah, I’m coming back,” sophomore guard JaQuan Lyle said. When asked to confirm he was back next season, he nodded his head.

Some had speculated the one time Oregon signee could entertain options playing in the NBA’s developmental G-League or perhaps abroad given his age (21) being older than much of the rest of his eligibility class. Lyle struggled to find his shot — as did many of his teammates — during the 66-57 loss to Rutgers and while it’s possible the Buckeyes will still pursue a post season tournament, it’s a sure bet Lyle didn’t want his OSU career to end the way the game against the Scarlet Knights did.

One of the more visibly impacted players by the difficult loss, Buckeye big man Trevor Thompson, had previously tested the draft waters, taking advantage of a new NCAA rule which allows players to go through workouts if they pay their own way and pull themselves out of draft consideration after a month or two if they aren’t receiving the kind of feedback they were hoping for.

Improved overall considerably from even a season prior, Thompson struggled on the glass against Rutgers at times and also didn’t have the kind of game any Buckeye big would want to be their swan song. But while battling through the difficult aftermath of a challenging loss, he wasn’t ready to tip his hand definitively one way or the other.

“I’m not really sure right now,” Thompson said. “I’m just frustrated right now. That’s what my focus is on,” a visibly emotional Thompson echoed. “Only time will tell, I guess.”

While lost-for-the-season junior wingman Keita Bates-Diop arguably held the Buckeyes’ highest draft grade heading into this past season, he’s already stated in the wake of a year stolen by a leg injury that he’s planning to return to Ohio State. An already thin on the interior basketball Buckeyes would be even thinner if Thompson decides to go through the draft process for good this time.

The Buckeyes couldn’t rebound, and they couldn’t shoot free throws, and they paid for it.

WASHINGTON D.C—Well, this was definitely a 2016-2017 Ohio State basketball game.

It featured runs where Ohio State looked like a team capable of making a deep run in DC. It featured runs where Ohio State was outworked, out-hustled, and outplayed by a very bad Rutgers team. And it featured lots and lots of missed shots.

But in the end, thanks to an inability to convert at the stripe or pick up critical rebounds, Ohio State lost to Rutgers to open the Big Ten Tournament. And they’ll have to wait to see if their name is called during the NIT Selection Show on Sunday.

Ohio State jumped out to an early lead, leading 17-8 before a four minute scoring drought allowed Rutgers to come roaring back to take the lead, as the two teams would seesaw back and forth throughout the first half, with Ohio State taking a 32-29 lead into the break.

Rutgers only shot 34% from the floor, but were able to stay close thanks to a commanding edge on the glass (21-14), paced by C.J. Gettys, who flummoxed Trevor Thompson inside, grabbing seven boards himself.

But timely shooting from C.J Jackson and aggressive finishes inside by Jae’Sean Tate helped Ohio State build a slim margin that they’d maintain for a stretch in the game.

A familiar problem, free throw shooting, helped Rutgers continue to hang around, as the Buckeyes shot a woeful 15-28 from the stripe. A few quick threes after the break allowed Rutgers to build their biggest lead of the game, 39-33. The two sides would trade leads back and forth in the second half, but paced by a whopping 22 second chance points, the Scarlet Knights got just enough breathing room to hold off Ohio State, even though they went through long draughts without scoring themselves.

Though the Buckeyes had several chances to get the game within two or one, missed free throws continued to doom them and with little offensively to go around, the worst case scenario for the 2016-2017 Ohio State men’s basketball team came to fruition.

Three things we learned

  1. Maybe Ohio State shouldn’t take so many dang threes. Ohio State actually got a fair amount of decent looks from downtown, a product of strong ball movement, and defensive choices by Rutgers. But even though C.J Jackson has dramatically improved as a three point shooter over the last few games, the Buckeyes don’t have the personnel to really exploit this, leading to an inability to sustain leads. If the Buckeyes are left open from downtown again and again, it’s probably for a reason. Taking it inside may still be the best option.
  2. Maybe Ohio State should hit a free throw once in a while. The Buckeyes missed 13 free throws, and it’s not like Rutgers was constantly fouling Thompson and Bell. Poor free throw shooting has been a problem for the Buckeyes for years, and it has constantly hurt them in their ability to put squads away. Today, it cost them against an inferior team.
  3. Ohio State lost to Rutgers. In basketball. Let’s never speak of it again.

Urban Meyer is keeping the senior on his toes.

“Here's something that won't change: The offense belongs to Barrett.”

- Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

Spring football is here. J.T. Barrett is a senior this time around, and while many Ohio State fans have taken issue with whomever is under center the past two seasons, the reins still belong to Barrett. Urban Meyer told Landis something that will sit well with those uneasy fans. "I just want to see more accuracy," Meyer said. To be fair, it isn’t all on Barrett but most of the blame typically falls on the quarterback and head coach, regardless.

Meyer also said via Landis something that you may not expect to hear from a coach about his senior quarterback. "J.T. is gonna get a ton of reps because there are some new concepts we put in," Meyer said. "J.T. will be full speed ahead." You’d imagine that Barrett has everything figured out already, but that’s what makes Meyer one of the best. He’s always trying to improve, and get the most out of his players. It’s why Ohio State has been one of the best programs in college football since his arrival.

“Think about Virginia, Purdue, Michigan State and Wisconsin if you want to feel good about the journey Ohio State basketball hopes it's about to embark on.”

- Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

The Big Ten Tournament is this week, and not many of us are expecting too much to come out of the Buckeyes. A surprise run through the tournament would undoubtedly be wonderful, but we won’t be too disappointed if it doesn’t happen. Thad Matta, who got a vote of confidence from Gene Smith today, is still trying to decipher his team. "I've quit trying to figure this team out mentally, as you can imagine," Matta said via Landis.

At the same time, Matta seems to be taking a more lighthearted approach. "I hope they understand this is the funnest time in college basketball ... you gotta go out there and play. It's time to man up." But of course, the emotional leader of the Buckeyes, Jae’Sean Tate, believes that the Buckeyes can play with anybody. Which, they have shown that, but just not on a consistent basis. "We have to make sure we don't have those mental ups and downs this week,” he said. “We have to be solid the whole way through, on cruise control. In my opinion, there's not a team that we can't beat." Hopefully this turns out to be a memorable week for the Bucks.

“Now, the former Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year is an unrestricted free agent.”

- Aaron Wilson, Houston Chronicle

Former Ohio State linebacker John Simon has been a great contributor for the Houston Texans the past few seasons. While his role might not be the greatest, he’s been a piece of a defense that was the best in the NFL last season, and now, he’s set to hit the free agent market. In 2016, he finished with a career-high 51 tackles, four of those for loss, and 3.5 sacks. As Wilson points out, there’s no question that the Texans would like him back, but there should be a good market out there for Simon.

"He is kind of an unsung hero type of player," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said of Simon during the season. "He's a guy who personifies doing your job. He does a good job every week of going out and doing what he's coached to do.” O’Brien added another note all Buckeye fans would enjoy, “Vrabel does a good job of coaching him.” Of course, Vrabel himself was complimentary of Simon as well. “I see a tough, physical football player who the game and his teammates are important to him," Vrabel said. "He loves it. He studies hard. He tries to do it the way we coach him to do it." Whether or not he’s back with the Texans next season, we’ll all be hoping Simon has a great 2017 season.

Our newest podcast talks transfers, the big ten tournament, and more.

At a place as talent-rich as Ohio State, it stands to reason that there’s going to be attrition from time to time. Whether due to a lack of playing time or increased competition, even former blue-chip recruits can get lost in the shuffle. With Spring practice underway, the Buckeyes lost three such players this week, as offensive lineman Tyler Gerald, and wide receivers Alex Stump and James Clark all chose to leave the program.

On this week’s edition of The Hangout in the Holyland, Matt Brown and Colton Denning are back to discuss the transfers, whether they were a surprise, and just how big of an impact they’ll have on the depth of the roster. Ohio State currently stands at 87 scholarships —two more than the NCAA limit of 85— and the guys discuss how much more attrition to expect before the start of the season.

The winningest coach in school history will get a chance to right the ship.

If you’ve lost interest in Ohio State men’s basketball over the course of the past two seasons, it’d be hard to blame you.

The program’s missed the NCAA Tournament for what looks to be two straight seasons, suffering some of the worst losses in recent school history — hello, 10-19 Florida Atlantic — and an lost almost an entire Top five recruiting class after less than a calendar year.

Despite hardships (including some of the wildest negative recruiting you’ve ever heard of working against them), and an on the court product seldom palatable except by the most loyal of Buckeye faithful, Ohio State head coach Thad Matta will get at least one more season to attempt to sort things out.

“Recently, Thad and I had a great discussion regarding the future of our Men’s Basketball Program,” OSU athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement.

“Thad’s record at Ohio State is an outstanding 337-122; a winning percentage of .734. He is the all-time wins leader and owns the record for most games coached at Ohio State. His teams have won five Big Ten titles, and made nine NCAA postseason appearances. What Thad’s teams at Ohio State have accomplished – both on and off the court – is highly commendable.

“While we are not currently where we aspire to be with our performance on the court, Thad understands better than anyone that component has to improve. I am confident in his leadership to return the program to the winning ways that we have all enjoyed during his 13 year tenure,” Smith added.

“We have had tremendous success with Thad as our basketball coach. His commitment to developing young men in a holistic way and running our program with the highest of integrity continue to be hallmarks of his leadership.”

While Smith’s vote of confidence may not sit well with some, there’s a case to be made that Matta deserves the chance to fix what he started. There are some reinforcements coming via next year’s recruiting class, and if Matta makes it to the 2018-2019 season as OSU’s head basketball coach, there’s a super class waiting to potentially take the Buckeyes back to the level their fans desire.

Regardless of where you stand on Matta’s status as Buckeye basketball coach, the fact remains that he’ll be in that role for at least one more season. Whether or not OSU can return to its previous level or not with him remains to be seen.
