The Buckeyes struggled after a long layoff, but had enough to handle the Hilltoppers.

After a thirteen-day layoff, the Ohio State women’s basketball team was finally back on the court on Friday afternoon, taking on Western Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Lexington. The Buckeyes looked out of sync after that time off, but had just enough to hold on for a 70-63 win.

Ohio State, which had a 12-game winning streak snapped by Purdue in the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament on February 3rd, improved to 27-6 and moves on to play host Kentucky, which scraped by Belmont in the early game at Memorial Coliseum, in the second round.

Kelsey Mitchell, coming off arguably the worst performance of her career in the loss to the Boilermakers, a game in which she scored just nine points on 3-for-22 shooting, saw her struggles continue. The Big Ten Player of the Year scored a tough 15 points on 5-for-15 shooting.

The Buckeyes would have been completely lost if not for Asia Doss, who scored a season-high 15 points. Doss, who moved to the bench midway through the season after starting her first two years, hit 3-for-4 from three-point range and contributed six assists, a steal, and a block.

Tori McCoy was also in double figures, scoring 12 points, pulling down three rebounds, and blocking four shots.

Ohio State turned the ball over 17 times in the game, and had trouble with its spacing offensively. But holding WKU to 29 percent shooting was just enough to survive and advance.

The rust for both sides was apparent early on, as they combined to make just two of the first 11 shot attempts and turned the ball over five times through two and a half minutes of play. Three-point shooting began to kick in, though, as Doss hit a pair for the Buckeyes and Goodin-Rogers matched her. By the midway point in the first quarter the score was tied 8-8.

Nearly two minutes went by after that without either team scoring, but then a flurry of points ensued. WKU got threes from Micah Jones and Sidnee Bopp, while Ohio State had Shayla Cooper hit a layup and Kiara Lewis connect from deep. Kendall Noble followed with a jumper for the Hilltoppers, but Lewis completed an and-one, Doss stole the ball for an easy layup, and Tori McCoy got a bucket in the paint after another turnover to finish the frame on a 7-0 run for a 21-18 lead.

The Buckeyes started slowly in the second quarter as well, managing just one point on a McCoy free throw in the first nearly five minutes. But the Western Kentucky managed to score just three points in that time, and the score sat at 22-21 for nearly three whole minutes. After a pair of free throw makes by Tashia Brown gave the Hilltoppers the momentary lead, Doss scored her 10th point of the half on a layup, giving Ohio State a one-point lead at the media timeout.

The remainder of the quarter was similarly ugly, with neither team able to find any rhythm or flow offensively. The Buckeyes turned the ball over five times in the period, giving them 11 in the opening twenty minutes, and were it not for Doss and Alexa Hart, who scored four points and played physical, rim-protecting defense, WKU would’ve had a chance of running away with things.

Mitchell got her first field goal of the half, a deep triple from the top of the key, with under a minute to go, and a steal by Doss off the full-court press led to an easy layup for Linnae Harper gave Ohio State a 37-30 lead heading into the locker room.

The Hilltoppers were led by Goodin-Rogers’ eight points, while Noble added seven, but turned it over 10 times themselves and shot a paltry 29 percent from the floor. Lewis, with six points, and McCoy, with five, were the only Buckeyes outside of Doss and Hart to make more than one shot.

The theme of ice-cold starts continued for Ohio State after halftime, as the team went scoreless for the first 3:15 of the third quarter. Once again, though WKU couldn’t capitalize, getting just two buckets from Noble in that time. A McCoy layup ended the drought, a putback on an offensive rebound by Hart, and another three-pointer from Doss gave the Buckeyes their largest lead, 44-34, at the media timeout.

After a second three-point make of the game by Bopp, another two minutes elapsed without any points. Mitchell ended that with a tough leaner in the lane on which she was fouled, and after completing the traditional three-point play, Ohio State was up 47-37. To close out the quarter, she splashed her second from long range, but Noble answered right back with one of her own, making it a seven-point game, 50-43, headed to the final ten minutes.

A nice dime by Doss to Hart for a layup got the fourth quarter started, but it would be another two minutes before the Buckeyes scored again. When they did, though, they went on an 8-1 run, spurred by two Cooper jumpers and a Mitchell driving layup, taking a 60-46 lead with just under six minutes to play.

Mitchell found herself wide open on the right elbow with four and half to play, keeping the lead comfortable, and a McCoy layup kept it there with three minutes left. The Hilltoppers wouldn’t go away, scoring six straight to trim the lead back to nine, but Sierra Calhoun knocked a three-pointer, her first made shot of the game, to all but seal the victory.

Brown hit a three with 25 seconds remaining that made it a 69-63 game, but Western Kentucky’s comeback attempt fell just short. A Doss free throw pushed things back out to a three-possession lead with under 20 seconds, and Ohio State held on.

Up next is a matchup with Kentucky on Sunday with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen on the line. The game is scheduled to be broadcast live on ESPN2, though a tip-off time has yet to be determined.

It won’t be easy, but it can be done.

“With Ohio State basketball coming off of the worst season of the Thad Matta era, and its first season under 20 wins since 2003-04, some things need to change.”

- Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

Landis lists accountability, defending, floor balance, social media, and recruiting the five changes that Ohio State should make moving forward in order to fix the basketball program. Some of these might sound a little surprising like social media, but there’s a method to the madness. As far as accountability, Landis would like a better balance between, “Yanking a guy quickly at the risk of losing that player's trust, and leaving him in so long on a day that he just doesn't have it to the point that it's detrimental to the team.” Defending is self explanatory. They have to be better, and more consistent there.

As far as floor balance, he feels that Trevor Thompson skipping his senior season to be a plus, to unclog the middle of the floor. His reasoning is that he and Jae’Sean Tate like to score from the same part of the floor, which makes sense. I would argue that varying point guard play also played a role there, though. For social media, it combines with recruiting. The football program does great with this, and it’s made a difference in helping bring players to Ohio State. Basketball can improve there, which would help recruiting some. At the end of the day, better recruits will be needed.

“There's one team out there that should serve as the ideal example for what Ohio State can still be under Thad Matta.”

- Doug Lesmerises, Northeast Ohio Media Group

The 2012-13 Ohio State team is that team. They won the Big Ten Tournament that season, and were 2nd in the regular season. That team was highlighted by Aaron Craft, DeShaun Thomas, Lenzelle Smith, and LaQuinton Ross. It was an exciting group that had a perfect splash of talent, none of which turned out to be NBA players.

That team lost in the Elite Eight to Wichita State, but were a great group to watch. Thomas, who was one of the best scorers in Indiana high school basketball history at third all-time, was able to get the Buckeyes points when they need them. Aaron Craft could dish the pill and defend, and the rest of the cast was able to hold their own, and even step up at times when they needed it most. While it wasn’t the most talented Buckeye team we’ve seen, they meshed well together. If the Buckeyes can get similar pieces, it could help lead the turnaround.

“The NCAA tournament has been held annually since 1939, but there was very little madness in that first March.”

- The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State helped create what has become the favorite time of the year for many in sports. The NCAA Tournament has been held every year since 1939, and Ohio State basketball coach Harold Olsen helped create what was then an eight-team tournament. Olsen felt the NIT had an arbitrary selection process, so this was his, and others answer.

Ohio State made the first tournament field and knocked off Wake Forest and Villanova. They would eventually be knocked off by Oregon in the first championship game, which was played at Northwestern. Over the years, the Buckeyes have 31 NCAA Tournament appearances, which is up there with programs like Michigan State, UConn, and Arizona.

Social media is helping Buckeye recruiting efforts.

Ohio State really doesn’t need a lot of help when it comes to recruiting. With a more recent National Championship, record amount of players heading to the NFL, top academics, state of the art facilities and a coaching staff that speaks for itself, it’s not hard to see why the Buckeyes have continuous success on the recruiting front. However, in today’s world with prep aged players, social media is a huge outlet and graphics, videos and other types of media are a major aspect in recruiting. Fortunately for Ohio State, their graphic design and creative content team is off the charts as well. To put it simply, it’s a great time to be a Buckeye football fan.

Jones coming to OSU this spring

The long line of talent in the Ohio State quarterback room is enough to have every program in the country jealous of what Urban Meyer and Kevin Wilson have at their disposal. However, it’s only going to get better and deeper when current 2018 quarterback commit Emory Jones (Franklin, GA Heard County) heads to Columbus to start his collegiate career.

The five-star is exactly what Urban Meyer wants in his future quarterback. At nearly 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, Jones has the ability to spin it, but also take off and go for the distance at any moment he touches the ball. That’s easy to see as he is currently ranked by 247sports as the top overall prospect at his position, third best player in Georgia and to top it all off a top 25 player at any position in the country. Needless to say, the Buckeyes love what they’re getting in Jones.

Yesterday, Jones took to twitter to express the love he has been receiving from the Ohio State creative content media team. What was meant for his account actually did wonders for the Buckeyes recruiting efforts as many other top prep players in the state and around the country loved what Jones “posted” to his twitter feed.

Knowing that they have struck proverbial gold in Georgia with recent stars such as Raekwon McMillan, Bradley Roby and beyond, the Buckeyes are certainly using that to their advantage as they look for more of the nation’s best for the 2018-2019 classes. As for Jones, he made sure to include other top in-state guys such as Keiondre Jones, Kearis Jackson and Jaycee Horn. While Jones plans to help out recruiting efforts himself, he will also be heading to his future home this spring for the Buckeye spring football game on April 15.

Number one down to two?

Yesterday, in an article via elevenwarriors.com, the infamous defensive tackle position was talked about once again. A position the Buckeyes have had some success in for sure, but to nobody’s pleasure have also “missed” on their top targets at the oh so critical spot. With key misses in 2016 and now 2017 with top southern prospects, Ohio State is doing everything they can to change their fate in the 2018 recruiting class.

The prospect the Buckeyes are hoping to change their luck is none other than IMG Academy’s Taron Vincent. Not only ranked as Florida’s top prospect, but he currently holds the top spot for the nation’s best defensive tackle as well, according to 247sports. If Urban Meyer and Ohio State are going to land a top defensive tackle, they would love for it to be Vincent.

When his recruitment started seriously taking off, the Buckeyes were in the driver’s seat. However, as things have been progressing, there’s another program on their heels or may have passed them a bit. Unfortunately, this same Florida State program is what hurt them this past recruiting class when they landed top defensive tackle, Marvin Wilson, another one of the Buckeyes “misses”. A battle that is sure to heat up in the coming weeks, Vincent is scheduled to visit Ohio State in the coming weeks and a decision is thought to follow shortly after. If the Bucks want to end their streak, this upcoming visit has to be a home run for Urban Meyer and the rest of his coaching staff. Fortunately, the red carpet treatment in Columbus for recruiting visits has rarely ever let down.

Safety likes OSU but is it enough?

It’s been said countless times, but the success that Ohio State is having with their defensive backs is truly something incredible. Between sending record amounts of guys to the NFL and then landing top prospects to replace them, the cycle of success isn’t going to stop rolling any time soon.

Yesterday, Bucknuts.com’s Bill Kurelic wrote a piece including Clearwater, Fla. prospect Amari Burney. In the piece Bill goes in depth at what is currently happening in the mind of Burney. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound defensive back is currently ranked as the ninth best safety in the country and the 25th best player in the talent-rich state of Florida.

Among the happenings with Burney, it looks as if there are two schools that are at the top for the four-star safety. The two in the running are Florida and Ohio State. Two programs closely related to each other, Meyer knows the ins and outs of Florida and if any out of state coach has an edge in the Sunshine State, it’s Urban Meyer. With 21 total offers, to be down to two speaks highly of the Buckeye football program. Florida may have a slight edge in this one, but if Ohio State is in the running, anything can happen.

Quick Hits:

  • A top 2019 LB, Georgia’s Owen Pappoe visits Ohio State next weekend for his first trip to see the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes won their Big Ten conference tournament opener with three goals in the third period

Two years ago, coming into the Big Ten Tournament, David Gust was a little known sophomore with eight total points on the season. But he came in like a (heh) tornado and blew away Minnesota despite OSU’s loss, looking like the best forward Ohio State had that night. This afternoon, in the Big Ten Tournament, Gust didn’t want his college career to end.

Ohio State went into the third period this afternoon at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit looking like the team expected to lose, not 7-24-4 Michigan State. Shots were even despite Ohio State trailing for much of the late first and early second period. OSU is the more talented (and ranked) team and should have beat this team down. But they weren’t.

The third period started as a 3-3 game, looking like it could knock Ohio State from the NCAA Tournament at large bid conversation. A minute and 38 seconds later, you knew it was over. Thanks to Gust.

He scored twice in the first 1:38 of the third period, with the goals coming within 1:13 of each other. Leading the team in shots in the game with five, Gust made sure his collegiate career didn’t end with a horrific upset that would’ve effectively neutralized any goodwill the hockey team bought this season playing the likes of Denver and Minnesota tough.

But now they get a chance to, in all likelihood, stamp their ticket to the NCAA Tournament if they can beat number two seeded Wisconsin tomorrow in Detroit in the second round of the tournament. The Buckeyes just swept the Badgers in Madison, so there’s no excuse, but after today, anything is possible. And it’s only possible thanks to Gust.

Matt Tomkins, as expected with his recent run of strong play, got the nod in net over (somehow) Second Team All-Big Ten goalie Christian Frey, and put up a performance that’ll probably be good enough on most nights behind a team that can score as effectively and quickly as this one.

He allowed three goals, all in the first period, on 29 shots. Not a terrific save percentage by any means, but when your team is capable of scoring five or six goals on anyone, you’ll take it.

The key, though, as it’s been throughout this entire season, has been attacking and staying attacking. Ohio State went up early in this one, with goals from Mason Jobst and Nick Schilkey (of course) but then found a way to allow three consecutive MSU goals in a span of 5:22. That should not be possible if you’re this much more talented and not sitting back.

Nine minutes into a game, even with a multiple goal lead, is no time to sit back and protect, especially when your goaltending is shaky and defense is nothing to write home about. Depend on the forwards and scoring that got you here. Jobst has broekn 50 points this year! Schilkey came in shooting nearly 30%! Let them go!

Villiam Haag, Dylan Pavelek and Sam Saliba, in order, were the goal scorers for MSU in the first period, with the first coming at 8:58 and the last at 14:20. They wouldn’t score again, but they held onto that lead for 18:34 when Brendon Kearney, he of two goals on the year, scored the tying goal after a litany of weird offensive zone ricochets and rebounds eventually landed right on Kearney’s stick in the slot, letting him rip one past Ed Minney.

The game would go into the second intermission tied at three with shots 19 apiece. That set the stage for Gust.

His first goal, on the powerplay, came off a pass from Jobst on the sidewall. Gust tried to hit Dakota Joshua in front of the net, but the pass wouldn’t get there and somehow ended up back on Gust’s stick in front of the net. He buried it and scored what would ultimately be the game winner.

He wasn’t done though, obviously. He scored again just 1:13 later, this time with Janik Moser of all people recording the lone assist. Gust buried the Spartans a lot more efficiently than the Persians, in just one minute and thirteen seconds.

Tanner Laczynski showed signs of a late season rebound, scoring the insurance goal at 3:51, with assists from Tommy Parran and Matthew Weis, to make it 6-3 and that was all she wrote.

OSU poured it on in the third, outshooting MSU, 15-7. Ohio State, and Gust especially, basically decided this was over when the third started and enforced their will. And that was that.

The Buckeyes will take on Wisconsin tomorrow at 4:30pm ET in Detroit and if they win, there’s almost no chance they won’t make the NCAA Tournament. Get excited.
