The Buckeyes’ lone senior this past season is headed to the next level.

For the second consecutive year, the Ohio State women’s basketball team watched as one of its members had her name called on draft night. Shayla Cooper, who just completed her senior season for the Buckeyes, was selected by the Connecticut Sun with the No. 13 pick in the WNBA draft on Thursday night.

Cooper, a native of Norcross, GA who transferred to Ohio State from Georgetown, was the lone senior for the 2016-17 squad. She ranked third on the team in scoring at 10.5 points per game, second in rebounding at 6.7 per game, and dished out 2.1 assists per game while shooting 47.5 percent from the floor and notching six double-doubles.

The Buckeyes, who went 28-7 on the year, won a share of the Big Ten regular season title, tying atop the standings with Maryland, and went into the conference tournament with the top seed. The team received a bid to the NCAA tournament as a five seed, and progressed to the Sweet 16 before being knocked off by Notre Dame, the No. 1 seed in the Lexington Region.

For her career in scarlet and gray, Cooper appeared in 90 games, including 44 starts. She scored over 1,000 career points, averaging 11.5 per game while pulling down 7.5 boards, and made a reputation for herself as a player who could score on the perimeter, in the paint, or off the dribble.

What Cooper will perhaps be best remembered for, though, was her toughness and versatility. At 6’2, she had no problems mixing it up down low and gave Ohio State an edge to its personality. Cooper could defend all five positions on the court, and her all-around game led to second-team All-Big selections as both a junior and senior.

The top pick in this year’s WNBA draft was Kelsey Plum of Washington, who coincidentally was recruited to the Huskies by current Buckeye head coach Kevin McGuff during his tenure there. Plum, who broke the NCAA’s all-time career scoring record this past season, was selected by San Antonio. The Stars received the top pick after amassing a 7-27 record in 2016.

A year ago, Ohio State’s Ameryst Alston was selected 24th overall by the New York Liberty. Cooper will now join her among the ranks of professional Buckeyes.

The 21st season of the WNBA will get underway on Saturday, May 13th. Cooper and Connecticut will host Atlanta on that night in the Mohegan Sun Arena.

The likely 1st-rounders will be on hand in Philly to hear their names called.

Ohio State is going to be pouring some high-round picks into this year’s NFL Draft, and a few of them will be on hand when their names are called. Per NFL Director of Football Communications Randall Liu, cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley will both attend the draft festivities in Philadelphia.

Lattimore and Conley played key roles in Ohio State’s lockdown secondary in 2016, combining for eight interceptions, 17 pass breakups, and 59 total tackles. Alongside other soon-to-be draftee Malik Hooker, Lattimore and Conley carried the Buckeyes to a No. 8 overall ranking in pass defense.

SB Nation’s draft rankings have Lattimore as the top corner available in this year’s class, with Conley as a respectable No. 3. Both have the skills, physicality, and football smarts to start very quickly at the next level—particularly for a team like the Tennessee Titans, who grabbed Lattimore at No. 5 in SB Nation’s mock draft.

Ohio State produced two of the most impactful rookies in the NFL last season in Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott and Chargers DE Joey Bosa. With the monstrous talent coming out of Columbus this season—from the lockdown corners to do-it-all LB Raekwon McMillan to stud punter Cameron Johnston—there’s no reason to think former Buckeyes can’t repeat the feat this year.

Plenty of other big names will be in Philadelphia with the top Buckeye corners. Clemson QB Deshaun Watson will be there—remember what he did the last time they were all in a room together?—as well as other College Football Playoff standouts Jonathan Allen (DT, Alabama) and John Ross (WR, Washington). The most notable exception is likely No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett, who will watch the event from home, presumably so his family is on hand to console him if he’s taken by Cleveland.

See the full list of 22 attendees below.

The spectacle of the Ohio State Spring Game is upon us. This is one of the biggest offseason events that the Buckeyes host and this year will be no different. With many blue-chip recruits of all ranks, the Buckeyes will look to rise up in the rankings with a great showing, that is looking like it won’t disappoint.

*** The storylines will feature a brand new Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach in Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day, it will return a good amount of starters from last season with J.T. Barrett on offense and the majority of the Defensive Lineman. The inexperience and the lack of creativity and variety was a problem, but with a few old pieces in places and some new faces on the coaching staff, this makes for another intriguing storyline to follow. Look for a more improved offense that will tire out the defense with their upgraded tempo. Will they find their next version of Curtis Samuel? Will they find their next Devin Smith, Braxton Miller or Mike Thomas?

*** Zach Smith and Tony Alford will be tasked with providing playmakers and balance for the Buckeyes offense with members of their respective units. Will Coach Smith find the next stars for his unit? He needs Zone 6 to produce another playmaker and establish his role in the offense. The Buckeyes will have the talent, but can they find the playmakers to follow what Mike Thomas, Devin Smith, and Braxton Miller have built? Will Coach Alford they find their next version of Curtis Samuel or the next Ezekiel Elliott? He has Mike Weber, who acted as their workhorse, but will Antonio Williams and J.K Dobbins step up? Or can walk-on Jerimiah Knight carve out a steady role for himself?

*** Look for new Linebackers Coach Bill Davis to find his niche from within the Schiano captained defense. He took over for Luke Fickell and he looks to use his extensive NFL coaching experiences to bridge the gap left by Fickell. He lost Raekwon McMillan, but he retained Chris Worley, who is now the starter at the Mike spot, Dante Booker, who is coming off of an injury-plagued season and Jerome Baker, who had a coming out party last season. He also has a lot of talented personnel waiting for their chance to reload the Buckeyes.

*** Coach Schiano and Coach Coombs will have the task of rebuilding the Scarlet Curtain or B.I.A., the Best In America. Three of their starters, Malik Hooker, Garon Conley and Marshon Lattimore left for the NFL, leaving only Damon Webb as the only returning starter. The Buckeyes signed five talented DB’s during NSD and they will look to make an immediate impact or contribution to the lack of established starters.

*** Last, but not least, the recruiting aspect for this game will be one of great importance. Many blue-chippers will come to see if their prospective unit succeeds or what improvements have been made. The potential of someone pledging their allegiance to the Buckeyes are good, but only time will tell. Both the offense and the defense need to put on a show, and with a few Buckeye commits present, you really never know what could occur.

*** P.S. The BTN chose to air the Ohio State Spring Game over TTUN’s. Lol!

LGHL New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to speak at Ohio State coaches clinic

The five-time Super Bowl champion head coach will address Ohio high school football coaches tonight.

“How does Bill Belichick just continue to move the right pieces in, the right people in and be so professional about what they do? I admire that ... I’m so infatuated with that and I thought it would be great for our Ohio high school coaches to hear that.”

Tim Hinton, Ohio State Executive Director for Football Operations via Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

When Ohio State’s annual coaches clinic kicks off tonight, the first speaker will be New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Even though Belichick has long relationships with Urban Meyer and Greg Schiano, getting Belichick to come and speak at the event is a bit of a surprise. Belichick is a couple months removed from winning his fifth Super Bowl as New England’s head coach, and the NFL Draft is just a couple weeks away. This will be Belichick’s second visit to Columbus in a month, as he attended Ohio State’s Pro Day in March.

Tim Hinton, who puts the coaches clinic together, wanted to get Belichick as the featured speaker as he was watching the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl in February. With the consistency and professionalism the Patriots always seem to display, Hinton thought that bringing in Belichick to speak would greatly benefit some of Ohio’s high school football coaches. While the event is technically for the high school football coaches, it could also help some of the coaches on Ohio State’s staff to hear some words of wisdom from one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. Boston College head coach Steve Addazio and College Football Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz will also be speaking, as well as a number of Ohio State assistant coaches.

“Some of the biggest components of the defense now gone, and a bad taste in the mouths of the fans after the last lackluster performance, but there is still hope for the Buckeyes. A bevy of young talent is emerging during spring practice, and will soon be on display in Ohio Stadium.”

Nicholas McWilliams, The Lantern

When Ohio State takes the field in 2017, gone will be defenders Marshon Lattimore, Gareon Conley, Malik Hooker, and Raekwon McMillan. It’s never easy to replace talent like those four players, but it is something that Urban Meyer has become quite familiar with. Prior to last season, Ohio State had to replace even more starters on defense, and all the Buckeyes did was field one of the best defenses in the country. Now a new crop of stars must step up to fill the voids and help the Buckeyes make another run at the College Football Playoff.

Who might some of the players to ease the departures on defense? The first name that comes to mind is Dante Booker. The linebacker was a starter at linebacker last year, but suffered a knee injury in the season opener. After missing pretty much the whole year, Booker is itching to get back on the field and make up for lost time.

Tracy Sprinkle is another Buckeye who was showing some promise on the field, but saw his season cut short in the season opener. While Sprinkle might not be a starter at defensive tackle, he certainly will be a key piece on the interior of the line with the talent that is already in place on the defensive line, and with the way Ohio State substitutes players in to keep players fresh.

The third Buckeye defender who could make some noise this year actually started last year opposite Malik Hooker at safety. Damon Webb picked off a pass and recorded 57 tackles, and Ohio State is going to need even more from him this year. With Ohio State needing to replace three starters in the secondary, Webb’s veteran presence will be relied on heavily as the new starters find their legs.

“The objective for 2017-18 is to become a dominant player, not just a player that can be a second option. If he’s in college basketball, he wants to be a first option. He’s got to be a flat-out dominant player across the board, no question. If he’s at the pro level, that’s a different story. He’ll have to accept his role.”

Ryan Thompson, father of Trevor Thompson via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

Many thought Trevor Thompson was a little crazy when he declared for the NBA Draft last year after averaging 6.5 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game in 17.9 minutes on the floor. Thompson didn’t hire an agent, and returned to Ohio State, where he averaged nearly a double-double in 23 minutes per game. Thompson improved his game considerably as a redshirt junior in Columbus, and now is again exploring his professional options.

Much like last year, Thompson isn’t hiring an agent, and can decide to return to school up until 10 days following the NBA Draft Combine, which is held May 9-14. With the strides Thompson made this year, as well as the lack of depth Ohio State has at the center position, it might be possible to see Thompson return to Ohio State for his senior season. The choice might not be quite as easy as last year though, since Thompson has improved his game. Even though he currently doesn’t appear in any NBA mock drafts, a strong combine showing could generate some interest and make Thompson think a little longer about his decision than he had to last season, when returning to school was by far the best option.

Just following God's blueprint! Thankful! pic.twitter.com/uZf7mHuyhs

— 1000 #RNF (@db_trey5) April 13, 2017

After three years at Ohio State, center David Bell has announced he will be transferring to Jacksonville University. The Cleveland native was redshirted in the 2014-15 season, and played in 38 games over the past two years. Bell struggled to get time on the floor, averaging just 5.7 minutes per game in 2015-16 and 6.1 minutes per game this season. Bell’s best game came early on in the 2015-16 season when he scored seven points in 19 minutes against Air Force. With Bell transferring and Trevor Thompson declaring for the NBA Draft, Ohio State could be thin at center next year if Thompson decides not to return to school.

After a lengthy free agency, the Buckeye has finally found a longterm deal.

One of the League’s most dynamic interior defensive duos is no longer, thanks to lineman Johnathan Hankins foregoing a deal with the New York Giants. Instead, the Indianapolis Colts are expected to sign the former Buckeye to a 3-year deal worth $30 million, according to NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Hankins was among the top free agents at his position heading into the offseason, but once the Giants used the franchise tag on Jason Pierre-Paul, the writing was on the wall. It was reported that his asking price was ultimately what kept him on the market for so long; as well as team’s trending toward short one-year, prove-it deals and Hankins looking for a longterm solution.

Having just finished his fourth year in the league, the defensive lineman had a career-best season, seeing 764 total snaps. The 2016 regular season also marked a big return for Hankins, who spent half of the 2015 season on injured reserve. He finished the year with 43 combined total tackles, three sacks, seven stuffs, one forced fumble, and his first career blocked kick. In addition to his impressive regular season, he had a big solo sack against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers during the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

The Giants defense was tough on rushers last season in large part to Hankins and Damon Harrison on the interior of the defensive line. Hankins may not be the most elusive pass-rusher, standing at 6’2, 320 pounds, but his ability to fill a gap in the run lane makes up for it. At only 24 years old, there is a lot of production left in the Buckeye, and he’ll continue to aggravate offenses for years to come.

tBBC Annotated Box Score: Game One Bruins vs Senators

Annotated Box Score: Game One Bruins vs Senators
T6S
via our good friends at Buckeye Battle Cry
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

gameoneannotatedbox1.jpg

It’s been quite some time since I’ve used this format, but with last night’s frustrating 2-1 loss to the Boston Bruins, I’m bringing back the annotated box score.

The format is straightforward and borrowed from Baseball Prospectus‘ Sam Miller. Select items from last night’s game summary and box score and add some of my own observations.

A.

Considering the Senators entered the game with the league’s 22nd-ranked penalty kill unit, disciplined play and staying out of the box was something that the Senators should emphasize.

So naturally, the team took three penalties in the first period and helped skew everyone’s ice time while killing whatever momentum they were generating at even strength.

Although though the Bruins were buzzing on the power play, the Senators successfully killed every second of the five minutes and 19 seconds that the Bruins enjoyed with the man advantage. Thank Craig Anderson and his trusty goal post for that.

B.

After scoring just one goal in the 21 games that led up to Ottawa’s regular season finale in Brooklyn versus the New York Islanders, Bobby Ryan has goals in back-to-back games for the first time since December.

His six shots on goal were a team high, but his possession numbers were equally fantastic.

He looked energized and engaged with the game and hopefully that’s a sign of more production to come. With the Jean-Gabriel Pageau line matching up against Patrice Bergeron’s, it’s imperative for Ottawa’s other lines to create and produce away from what’s arguably the league’s most dominant possession line.

C.

The goal by Frank Vatrano was a microcosm of what’s ailed the Senators all season long: the blue line’s struggles to move the puck led to an extended shift within the defensive zone and culminated with the game-tying goal.

The goal was inevitable with the way that the Senators were sitting on their lead.

After taking the play to Boston in the second period and putting 12 shots on goal to the Bruins’ none, the Senators played passively in the third period. Rather than take the attack to the Bruins and their already thin blue line that was missing Torey Krug and Brandon Carlo before Colin Miller left the game with an apparent knee injury, the Senators looked like a team in the regular season that was content taking the point and then rolling the dice on overtime or the shootout.

It didn’t help this shift was exacerbated by Craig Anderson’s inability to glove and freeze a puck that deflected off of his trapper, trickled down the back of the net and allowed the shift to extend. I don’t blame Anderson for the goal, but it was a fluky play that fans can curse if the rest of the series does not go Ottawa’s way.
D.

David Pastrnak was all over the ice last night.

The game summary doesn’t do his play justice. Although he wound up grabbing a secondary assist on Brad Marchand’s game-winning goal, first period, Pastrnak could have had three goals by the end of the first period.

The Senators struggled to contain the Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak line all night and although Boucher used the Hoffman-Pageau-Pyatt line as their preferred match up, the coach might want to shake up his lines or reassess whether that’s the trio that he wants to keep going back to.

At five-on-five last night, the Bergeron line generated more than 70-percent of the Corsi events.

I don’t want to take anything away from this Bruins’ line, but when the Senators are starved for goals, it doesn’t make sense to have Mike Hoffman’s skill set be marginalized when his line continually gets buried within the defensive zone. The problem is only compounded that much more when the Phaneuf-Ceci pairing was out there with them.

It might make more sense to use Alexandre Burrows or Viktor Stalberg on Pageau’s wings or just go strength on strength and have Stone replace Pyatt on that line.

E.

I mentioned earlier that the penalties in the first period may have skewed everyone’s allotted ice time, but it’s weird that six other forwards had more ice time than someone who the Senators’ analytics department rated as the Senators’ best forward.

F.

One of the things that I completely overlooked in my first round preview of this Senators/Bruins series was the health of Erik Karlsson.

I presumed that Karlsson was healthy and that his return to the lineup would have a bigger impact.

It’s not like Karlsson was bad last night mind you, but he wasn’t his noticeable self either. I guess that’s the problem with generational players, you can them for granted and just expect them to be at their best all the time. Considering how the other defensive pairings leave something to be desired, the Senators need more from Karlsson.

If last night’s all he is capable of providing given his health situation, the Senators will be in tough to advance. If there is a silver lining however, his ice-time increased with each period the Senators played (7:02, 8:02 and 9:00).
G.

Although the Phaneuf-Ceci duo has been rightfully panned for their performance as a pairing this season, it’s interesting to note that their ice time diminished as the game progressed.

Maybe that’s a function of the shorthanded ice time in the first period or the coaching staff’s recognition that they spend a disproportionate amount of time getting trapped in their own end.

Having spent the better part of the season playing together, I don’t anticipate the coaching staff shaking things up now, but I wonder at some point when the media will rightfully question the coaching staff about splitting them up. It’s not working. It hasn’t worked. The trade to bring Phaneuf into the fold hasn’t helped Ceci’s development at all, so when does the experiment end?
