The Buckeyes will have a tough time ending the year on a positive note against the surging Hoosiers.

It’s funny how a baseball season can seem so unbelievably quick yet so interminably long at the same time. Ohio State has reached the end of its schedule, the final three games in what has been a disappointing season to say the very least. It feels as though opening day in Osceola, Florida was just last week, but a grueling 53 games that saw the Buckeyes on the wrong end of the score time and again, often from self-inflicted wounds, has also worn down even the most ardent supporters of the program.

There will be a time, after the season finale on Saturday, to evaluate what, exactly, the state of the program is; to dissect what went wrong, who underperformed, who surprised, and where things go from here. There will surely be a host of answers, details that in hindsight will help to explain how the club went into a tailspin, and, as always in baseball, reasons to be optimistic that 2017 was just a momentary glitch for the scarlet and gray, a bump along the road to bigger and better things.

But for now, we turn our attention to the games still left to be played. We turn to the five players (Shea Murray, Jake Post, Zach Ratcliff, Joe Stoll, and Jalen Washington) who will be donning the scarlet and gray for the last time, with Senior Day being held on Saturday. It goes without saying, that quintet would like the final act of their careers to be a mark in the win column.

Baseball is a sport beloved because of its promise of nearly infinite tomorrows, but those days are in short supply for this year’s Ohio State squad. With the postseason all but mathematically out of the question, this is one last chance for the Buckeyes to leave everyone involved - players, coaches, and fans alike - with something positive to hold onto once this season has receded deep into memory, and something to build off of moving forward into future seasons.

Indiana Hoosier (30-19-2, 12-8-1 in Big Ten play)

There is perhaps no hotter team in the Big Ten than Indiana, which comes to town winner of seven of its last 10, including a 4-3 victory over national No. 2 Louisville on Tuesday night, and consecutive conference series wins over Minnesota, Michigan Maryland, and Penn State. Though the two sides did not meet in 2016, the Hoosiers have won their last 10 games against the Buckeyes, dating back to 2013.

Head coach Chris Lemonis has a team that can mash the baseball and do enough on the mound to win ballgames. Indiana has a conference-leading 60 home runs and ranks third in slugging percentage and doubles. Against an Ohio State pitching staff depleted by injuries and ineffectiveness, the Hoosiers lineup will be licking its chops.

The 3-4-5 hitters for Indiana will give any staff nightmares. Sophomores Matt Lloyd and Luke Miller and senior Craig Dedelow all rank in the top eight in the Big Ten in home runs. Lloyd in particular has having an all-conference type of season, slashing .322/.429/.611 with 13 doubles, 10 homers, and 39 runs batted in. Dedelow’s 13 longballs and 42 RBIs lead the team.

The pitching staff has had its issues, though, and may explain why a club with such power potential sits in sixth place in the Big Ten standings. The Hoosiers’ hurlers yield a .280 opposition batting average and give up just under five runs per game.

The weekend rotation kicks off with sophomore right-hander Jonathan Stiever, who has gone 3-3 with a 3.90 earned run average in 11 starts covering 57.2 innings. Stiever has been hit at a .277 clip by opponents, but managed to walk just four batters all season.

Behind him is fellow sophomore Pauly Milto, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound righty who has split time between starting and relieving. In 17 appearances that includes 7 starts, he’s amassed a 5-3 record with a 3.54 ERA in 61 innings of work. With a .258 batting average against and 1.26 WHIP, Milto has been solid, if unspectacular.

The final arm of the weekend is freshman Cal Krueger, who like Milto has split time between the rotation and the pen. Going 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 19 appearances that includes four starts, the Jasper, Indiana native has been impressive in his first collegiate season. Opposing batters hit just .243 against him, and he possesses a strikeout-to-walk ratio better than 2-to-1.

What Lemonis has in spades is options in his bullpen. An additional eight arms on the roster have made at least 13 appearances in some capacity, with freshman lefty Cameron Beauchamp (2.89 ERA) and Lloyd, who pulls double duty as the club’s closer, saving seven games, being tough to scratch out runs against.

The rivalry with Indiana has not been kind to Ohio State in the recent past, and given that these are two teams having decidedly different seasons, the odds seemed stacked against the Buckeyes. But this is a squad that has shown fight even in tough circumstances, and with the year coming to a close, will want to send its seniors off on a positive note.

The Buckeyes have good history with guys named Miller at QB.

Miller gets early Buckeye offer

While their focus is primarily on the 2018 class, Ohio State never seems to leave any stone unturned. That proved to be the case on Wednesday when they went to the Grand Canyon State to offer ‘20 QB Jack Miller of Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Just received my 6th offer from Ohio State University pic.twitter.com/Daowh5C9uf

— Jack Miller (@1_jackmiller) May 17, 2017

Yeah, it’s a bit early to be speaking on current high school freshman. With that being said, it’s pretty much inevitable that Miller is going to be one of the more highly pursued players in his class. The current 6-foot-3, 197-pounder has already racked up offer a handful of offers. The latest offer from the Buckeyes put them in that group along with Arizona, Arizona State, Florida State and Louisiana Tech.

Obviously, there is a long way to go in this recruitment. But jumping in very early certainly won’t negatively impact Ohio State’s chances.

Ohio State trending for Campbell

Just two days after adding a commitment from ‘18 outside linebacker Dallas Gant, a four-star prospect from St. John’s Jesuit (OH), the Buckeyes look to be garnering some momentum in the recruitment of another blue-chipper in this year’s cycle.

On Wednesday, Ohio State acquired two 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for ‘18 cornerback Tyson Campbell of American Heritage (FL). Campbell, a 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, is one of the very best prospects in the class (currently 28th overall) and would be yet another exceptional pickup for head coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes. It’s safe to say that adding Campbell, the fourth best CB in the class, to a back end that already features ‘18 cornerback Sevyn Banks and safeties Josh Proctor and Jaiden Woodbey wouldn’t be a bad thing.

If the Scarlet and Gray do outlast programs like Clemson, LSU, Miami (FL) and many more in this race, it would be their second pull from the respected high school program residing in Fort Lauderdale. The first was highly touted five-star QB/ATH Torrance Gibson. Unfortunately, Gibson would go on to never play a regular season snap for the Buckeyes and is now off to Cincinnati to suit up for Luke Fickell and the Bearcats.

No changes for Tannor

About three weeks ago, ‘18 defensive end Caleb Tannor of Miller Grove (GA) revealed his top ten group that included Ohio State. On Wednesday, the three-star prospect revealed a picture on his Twitter account to, I guess you could say “remind” everyone who was in the group; the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder made no new changes to his top schools list.

pic.twitter.com/WZxZN2zzCt

— Caleb Tannor 2️⃣1️⃣® (@cvleb10) May 17, 2017

So, why is that news? It’s news because since initially dropping that list almost a month ago, Tannor has secured offers from Arkansas, Ole Miss, Purdue and UAB. The schools that still have yet to offer are Clemson, LSU, Ohio State and South Carolina.

The Buckeyes already have a commitment from defensive end Brenton Cox in the class and have their sights set on a few other guys like Micah Parsons and Tyreke Smith.

Who knows, maybe things change and Tannor picks up an OSU offer and comes to an already loaded Buckeye squad. But, seeing as the Scarlet and Gray have commitments as well as targets for a couple other top prospects, the odds that Tannor comes to Columbus is low.

Retracing the Paths of My Uncles 4

Patton is free and he romps around. He heads east towards Paris and then north. It's August, the weather is good, more troops are coming in across the artificial harbors at Omaha and Gold beaches. The Brits are finally through Caen and pushing north too. A Plan develops: It's now a war of movement. The Americans will keep pushing east and north, Montgomery will continue to push up the coast and sightly east.

As I drive around Normandy I see a beautiful part of the world. Orchards - hey, you gotta make the cider and the cavados - are in bloom. The small towns seem to be prospering. The French have kept the small store alive. Grocery shopping means separate shops for cheese, bread, meat, and wine. There are department stores for clothes, but no Walmart, get-it-all-here places. No malls.

I can only guess what Uncle Bobby was experiencing. It must have been exhilarating and frightening in near equal parts. I know from Uncle Ray and Uncle Cliff that at some point in this time frame Bobby was ordered to retrieve the evening meals for the rest of the men in his squad. When he came back to their position the men were all dead or wounded from counter-battery fire.

While Patton moves the German command becomes desperate and tries to force a narrow gap between the two forces. The attack is stopped at Mortain and now the Brits and the Americans begin to attack both sides. Soon the Germans are caught in a vice with only one exit point - straight down the Dive River valley to the town of Argentan.

Patton and Montgomery seize the high ground along the 15 mile area, tanks, heavy and light artillery pour fire down on the escaping force. Both the RAF and the Army Air Corps bomb and strafe all day long. Patton races to Argentan and is ordered to stop so that Montgomery's forces can meet him there and close the escape hatch. For whatever reasons, Montgomery's forces just can't make it in time. By the time the Polish First Armor Division meets up with the 90th division enough Germans have managed to escape to reorganize and fight a defensive retreat back to the safety of the Siegfried Line.

Accounts of what happened in the pocket from Falaise to Argentan are horrific. The smell of death was permeating everything. A pilot stated he could smell the rotting flesh in his cockpit. Shortly after the battle ended, Eisenhower flew in to inspect. "I could have walked on dead bodies from one end of that valley to the other and not step on ground."

Today I drove along two roads that run parallel to the valley - one on the east and one on the west - roads that were used by the Americans and the British forces and looked down into the valley. I could see why the allies won the battle. What's the expression, "Like shooting fish in a barrel?"

I drove through villages that had been obliterated in the fighting, now restored and going on as if nothing more significant than everyday life took place here. Here and there I spotted a memorial and at a wide spot in the road named Chambois I found the spot where the men of the 90th US Infantry Division met the men of the Polish 1st Armored Division.

If the Buckeyes make necessary adjustments and get production from certain players, 2017 should be fun.

“For Ohio State to reach its potential and be part of the CFP final four, these five things must happen.”

- Joey Johnston, FanRag Sports

We’re not talking the simple “win out” here. Johnston lists five things we must see out of the Buckeyes on the field for them to get back to the playoff. None of these factors are groundbreaking by any means, but are good reminders of what the Buckeyes have been, and what they need to be in 2017.

The five things are J.T. Barrett succeeding in the passing game, Mike Weber following up his freshman season, starting quickly, winning on the road, and retooling where necessary. The first two are things we can all assume off the top of our heads. The other three are where things are a little more complex.

The season opens at Indiana on a Thursday night. The past two seasons have proven that the Indiana game could be tricky for the Bucks. That could very well be different with Kevin Wilson on the Buckeyes sideline now. That also is in relation to winning on the road, where the Buckeyes have some challenging games at Nebraska, Iowa, and Michigan. Yet perhaps those games won’t be so tough, if they reload at defensive back to a similar if not equal level that Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker, and Gareon Conley played at in 2016.

“Here is a look at Ohio State’s 2017 schedule.”

- Tom Dienhart, BTN.com

We’re slowly but surely getting closer to the 2017 college football season. For now, we have time to look at, and over analyze everything. One thing that isn’t so tough to decipher is the schedule, and what it’s going to mean for Ohio State’s season. Dienhart broke it down for BTN, taking a look at the toughest non-conference game, the toughest conference game, the easiest game, and other items of note.

Of course, the toughest non-conference game and biggest opportunity for Ohio State to be upset comes when the Oklahoma Sooners make the trip to Columbus. We’ll all be hoping that one goes similarly to the one last year that produced Noah Brown’s breathtaking catch.

The Bucks’ visit to Michigan is unsurprisingly the toughest conference game. Ohio State will also have a pair of could-be tricky games at Nebraska and at Iowa. Luckily for the Buckeyes, they won’t play Wisconsin or Northwestern this season, who are expected to contend in the Big Ten West. Army’s visit to Columbus is expected to be the easiest things will get this fall.

“1. Oklahoma Sooners at Ohio State Buckeyes, Sept. 9”

- Chris Low and Adam Rittenberg, ESPN

ESPN ranked the 10 college football games with the highest stakes going into next season. The one most of us are looking forward to on the schedule just so happened to be No. 1 on their list — Oklahoma vs. Ohio State.

The game means a lot for both teams. Sure, a win would go a long way in helping that team make the College Football Playoff, but it’ll be an early test to help set the pace moving forward. Ohio State looked good in last season’s matchup offensively, but it didn’t resonate through the rest of the season. This time around, the game is at home, so a lesser performance might be a red flag for Ohio State, if it comes down to that.

The contract details for all of Ohio State’s new assistants are out.

Land-Grant Holy Land has obtained the details of new Ohio State football offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson’s two-year contract with the university.

The former Indiana head coach’s base salary will start at $650,000 for the 2017 season, and will then increase to $750,000 beginning on February 1st, 2018. Additionally, Wilson will receive an 8.5% bonus if the team wins a Big Ten East title, and another 4.25% bonus if they will the Big Ten championship game.

The contract also includes bonuses for College Football Playoff appearances and victories.

Following Wilson’s unceremonious firing at Indiana that involved accusations of player mistreatment, a stipulation of his agreement with Ohio State requires that he “shall perform his duties and personally comport himself at all times in a manner consistent with good sportsmanship and with the high moral, ethical and academic standards of Ohio State and its Department of Athletics.”

Cleveland.com obtained the contracts for Ohio State’s other new assistant coaches. New QB coach Ryan Day will make $1.2 million over a two year deal, ($400,000 to $800,000 in year two), and new LB coach Bill Davis will make $500,000 on a one yer contract, per Cleveland.com.

LGHL The wildly pessimistic case for Ohio State basketball next season

The wildly pessimistic case for Ohio State basketball next season
Matt Brown
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

usa_today_9926827.0.jpg

Here’s how everything could go wrong.

Earlier this week, we wrote the wildly optimistic case for Ohio State basketball this season. You might have to squint, especially during this run of bad news, but there is still a path for the Buckeyes to improve, make the NCAA Tournament, and turn the program back towards the regular Big Ten title contention we’ve come to expect. It’s a narrow path, but it does exist.

But this website is fair and balanced, and we have to admit, there’s also a path where the wheels absolutely fall off for the Buckeyes. And we should probably talk about that too.

This roster has zero depth right now

Thanks to attrition and transfers, right now, Ohio State has the roster of a basketball program under NCAA sanctions. There are exactly two centers on the roster for next season, a true sophomore and a true freshman, and the sophomore is probably a better fit as a stretch four anyway. There are two point guards, C.J. Jackson, and Braxton Beverly, a true freshman who the Buckeyes flipped from the MAC. Even the walk-ons are leaving. Right now, the Buckeyes have just 10 players on their roster. These are problems.

It’s possible Ohio State can patch some of these roster holes with graduate transfers, but the window to add players is closing, and the possibility that Ohio State will head into next season with a drastically thin roster is increasing. That might end up working out, but if players get injured, or even if they get into foul trouble (something that’s probably likely with a big man rotation of Micah Potter and Kaleb Wesson), the Buckeyes could really struggle. And if a point guard or big man gets injured and has to miss appreciable amounts of time, things could get even worse.

Ohio State’s best player is coming off a serious injury

To make matters worse, there is no way the Buckeyes make the NCAA Tournament, and probably not even the NIT, unless Keita Bates-Diop has a big season. KBD brings a ton of important skills to the table for the Buckeyes. He can shoot. He can defend multiple positions. He has experience, and is a team leader.

But he also missed almost all of last season with a stress fracture, and he struggled with other injuries even before that (he missed five games in November). Plus, when he was on the court, his shooting lagged (he hit only 20% from three), and other production dipped.

If he’s healthy, KBD is capable of performing at an All-Big Ten caliber. But he’ll need to do more than just lock up opposing wings. He’s going to need to shoot and score, and based on (admittedly small sample size of) last season, the extent that he’ll be able to do that over the course of an entire year just isn’t known. If he can to do it? Awesome. And if he can’t do it...well...

Just who is going to score, exactly?

Thad Matta’s best teams have thrived on a defense-first mindset, and Big Ten games often devolve into grindfests, but as Uncle Drew taught us, the game has always been about buckets. Ohio State won’t win games if they can’t get buckets, and without Thompson, Loving or Lyle, who exactly is getting those buckets is not clear.

C.J. Jackson’s three point shooting improved dramatically near the end of last season, but over the course of the season, he still only shot 32% from downtown, and he can’t get to the basket and create his own shot like Lyle. Jae’Sean Tate plays hard, is super fun, and has improved every year, and he’ll probably lead the team in scoring, but he also can’t space the flour, and hey, he’s still 6-4. Micah Potter can splash threes, but he’ll need to learn to defend well enough to stay on the court. Kam Williams is very streaky. Kaleb Wesson is a freshman.

When you don’t have clearly defined scorer roles, that means you’re relying on scoring by committee. That can work, but it means that you can’t afford an off-night by nearly anybody on the roster. And with the Buckeyes counting heavily on either role players with defined flaws, or underclassmen, that’s a very risky plan.

Oh yeah, this schedule is hard

We don’t know Ohio State’s full schedule yet, including the Big Ten slate, but we know enough to know it won’t be easy. The Buckeyes have to play the defending national champs (UNC) in New Orleans. They’ll play in a massive non-conference tournament that will feature at least two games against brand-name teams. They’ll face a Big Ten gauntlet with a vastly improved Illinois squad, a Penn State team that returns a ton of big name recruits, Minnesota and Northwestern squads that could compete for Big Ten titles, and oh yeah, the usual suspects like Michigan State, Wisconsin, Maryland, etc.

In mid-May, it’s hard to point to many teams in the Big Ten who project to be much worse than they were last year. Every game is going to be a battle.

Now, that means there’ll be plenty of RPI points to be had, but it also means that if there are injuries, or if the young players are not mentally strong, then little slumps can become big slumps in a hurry.

This is a pivotal season for Ohio State basketball. With a few roster additions, the future might look a little rosier, and it’s still possible for the Buckeyes to start their rebuilding effort in a big way. But that path is very narrow, and if just a few things go wrong, things could get ugly in a hurry.
