LGHL Tracy Sprinkle brings even more depth to Ohio State’s loaded defensive line

After making an early exit last season, Sprinkle is expected back as a contributor at defensive tackle.

“He is going to be a bonus for us coming back. I actually think he is pretty close. We are still monitoring him a little bit. He got some work right down at the end of spring ball but now we will go full speed and see what happens.”

-Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson, via Tim Shoemaker, Eleven Warriors

The terror that is the Ohio State defensive line just got a whole lot more frightening--at least for opposing offenses. With four of the nation’s elite defensive ends in a rotation on the line, the interior members of the line haven’t been getting quite as much attention. In fact, the return of a breakout star coming back from injury simply adds fuel to an already raging fire of excitement surrounding the big guys up front on defense.

Fifth-year senior Tracy Sprinkle was injured in just the first few minutes of the 2016 season in Ohio State’s opener against Bowling Green, tearing his right patellar tendon and missing the rest of the season after surgery in the fall. To make matters worse, it was Sprinkle’s first start at Ohio State, after earning playing time in all 13 games as a redshirt sophomore in 2015.

After Sprinkle’s injury, then-redshirt freshman Dre’Mont Jones stepped up and became a breakout star himself, recording 52 tackles on the season and cementing his role on the defensive line heading into 2017, even with Sprinkle’s return. Urban Meyer called Jones “a really fine player” during spring practice, even on the level of the likes of Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard, Jalyn Holmes and Nick Bosa.

Though Sprinkle was still limited throughout spring practice, he has shown promise to make a full comeback by the fall as he continues to get healthy. He will then likely fall into an already-deep rotation on the line. Larry Johnson, the defensive line coach, favors such rotations of up to 10 linemen, keeping players fresh throughout a game. He certainly seems to have many of the pieces already in place heading into fall camp, and the addition of Sprinkle can only help to provide added speed and depth to the line.

“And although the buckeyes already have games scheduled against the likes of Texas, Notre Dame, TCU and Oregon in the coming years, several potential dream matchups still loom.”

-Ben Axelrod, Land of 10

Ohio State has never been a program to shy away from premiere matchups. This year’s Week 2 matchup against Oklahoma is a case in point. The departure of deputy athletic director Martin Jarmond, who was the mastermind behind Ohio State’s scheduling for the last eight years, means that the Buckeyes will need to find some new blood to orchestrate the same high-profile scheduling, but the next 10 seasons have already been pretty well thought out. For instance, Ohio State had TCU slated for next September in Arlington, Texas, Oregon in 2020 and 2021 and Notre Dame and Texas in 2022 and 2023.

Even so, there is always room for more. Top matchups against powerhouses mean a better strength of schedule heading into conference play, and a better shot of earning a berth in the College Football Playoff.

Georgia presents an obvious opportunity. It has become a recruiting hotbed for Urban Meyer and company, with Vonn Bell and Raekwon McMillan hailing from Rossville and Hinesville, respectively. Similarly, Florida State could be a likely opponent, given Meyer’s penchant for heading down south for the best players in Florida. With the Seminole’s liking for scheduling similarly tough opponents (they open against Alabama this fall), it would be a perfect fit for the Buckeyes in coming years. Out west, UCLA represents a solid target in the Pac-12 to boost recruiting while avoiding USC, who the Buckeyes faced in a home-and-home in 2008-09.

Beyond recruiting, facing foes like Clemson and Alabama would lend credence to Ohio State’s status as a consistent top-five program by facing other similar heavyweights. Especially with Clemson’s blanking of Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl this past season, revenge would be quite a motivating factor to schedule the Tigers. And Meyer’s rivalry with Nick Saban in terms of recruiting could help to fuel the unlikely out-of-conference matchup of Ohio State and Alabama.

“The cutthroat East Division has plenty of high-powered matchups slated for the coming fall both in league play and in nonconference games earlier in the season.”

-Dan Murphy, ESPN

Once again, the Big Ten East looks to be the powerhouse division in the conference heading into the fall, with Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan all projected to be in the top-10. Wisconsin, the highest-rated representative from the Big Ten West, is lower in ranking projections than all three of the East’s giants.

As a result, most of the circled games in the Big Ten season are matchups involving Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan. For starters, the Buckeyes’ October 28 matchup against Penn State in Columbus is possibly the most important matchup in the conference heading into the season, pitting last year’s Big Ten champion against the conference’s representative in the College Football Playoff. To heighten the intrigue, Penn State will be coming off of its own meeting with Michigan in Happy Valley the week before. Obviously, with Ohio State playing Michigan in Ann Arbor in the final week of the season, whoever comes out on top of the three teams will likely have an impressive resume and a probable shot at a spot in the College Football Playoff.

However, the top matchups aren’t limited solely to conference games. Ohio State’s September 9 date with Oklahoma in Columbus will be a top-10 rematch after the Buckeyes’ three-touchdown victory last season. While the passing attack which was so impressive against the Sooners waned as the Buckeyes headed into conference play, a revised offense, led by co-offensive coordinators Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day, will be of interest in game two.

Penn State has an early non-conference test of its own the same the afternoon of September 9, just ahead of Ohio State’s night game, when it faces Pittsburgh at home. Last season, the Nittany Lions lost by three to the Panthers in game two after quarterback Trace McSorley threw a pick late in the fourth quarter. An impressive performance against Pitt could help to give some early credibility to a team which was so impressive at the close of 2016.

Craft, the Sullingers, Diebler, Scoonie and more share their thoughts.

With Monday’s surprise announcement that Thad Matta would no longer be Ohio State’s basketball coach, many former Buckeyes took to social media to share their thoughts about the winningest coach in program history.

Matta took over as Ohio State’s coach in 2004, and has won five Big Ten regular season titles, four Big Ten tournament championships, and played in two NCAA Championship games. He was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year three times, most recently in 2010.

His roster of former players have gone on to become stars in the NBA and in professional leagues around the world, and his coaching tree is one of the most prolific in college basketball.

Ohio State will be looking for a new basketball coach even earlier than expected.

Earlier today, it was reported that Thad Matta would get one more season as Ohio State’s basketball coach before retiring. But it looks like Ohio State will actually need to find a new basketball coach sooner. Much sooner, in fact.

“Thad Matta will no longer be the head men’s basketball coach,” per the university. A national search for the next Buckeye head coach will begin immediately. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said, “Thad and I came to a mutual understanding that a leadership change was needed.”

Matta coached for 13 years at Ohio State, an amassed a 337-123 (.733) record. He won 20 games a season for 12 consecutive years, made two Final Fours, three Elite Eights, and won the Big Ten five times. He’ll leave Columbus as Ohio State’s all time winningest coach.

But the program had declined over the last several seasons, missing the NCAA Tournament the last two years, and missing the NIT entirely last season. Given Ohio State’s decline in recruiting, roster losses from transfers, it was clear that some sort of change was needed.

Matta was visibly emotional during the press conference, and thanked everyone involved with the Ohio State program for the opportunity to coach at the school for nearly a decade and a half. He also specifically thanked his doctors, who helped manage regular back issues to stay on the sideline.

When asked what his future held, Matta said, “Never say never,” but that he is focused foremost on getting healthy, and get his body “back where I can be serviceable.”

We’ll have more on this search as it develops.

This may be the last year of the Thad Matta era.

If a recent report is correct, Ohio State fans won’t have to do any speculating this offseason. The Buckeyes will have a new basketball coach after the 2017-2018 campaign.

According to Bucknuts, multiple sources have said that Thad Matta is expected to retire after the 2017-2018 basketball season. The Buckeyes have scheduled a press conference at 2 PM ET with Matta and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith.

Ohio State has hit a rough patch over the last few seasons, missing the NCAA Tournament two years in a row, and last year, missing the NIT after an embarrassing first round loss in the Big Ten Tournament to Rutgers.

Matta has an outstanding 439-154 overall coaching record at Butler, Xavier and Ohio State, where he has coached since 2004. No matter what happens this season, he’ll leave Ohio State as one of the best, if not the best, coach in Buckeye history. Hopefully the next coach of the program can build off what Matta started.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops.

Is a Buckeye pledge close to flipping to the Tide?

Recruiting is always changing, and things aren’t over until a prospect signs a national letter of intent with a school.

Verbally committed to Ohio State since late April, news broke over the weekend that newly ranked five-star prospect Brenton Cox would take a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. and check out what Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide have to offer n and off the football field.

When a recruit is pledged to attend a program and makes plans to visit another school, of course fans are going to freak out a bit. Before Buckeye Nation could make too much an uproar, Ari Wasserman of Cleveland.com caught up with the Georgia native to get his view on the situation.

"I mean, it doesn't matter because I'm done with recruiting, I'm straight. I was just going just to go. ... I'm not looking to decommit or go to Alabama. I'm going to Ohio State," Cox stated to Wasserman.

Cox isn’t the first OSU commit to ever take a visit. While it’s becoming a very common thing in new age recruiting, and some players end up having a change of heart, all signs look to currently point towards Brenton staying with the Buckeyes, who he spurned his home-state and one time favorite Georgia Bulldogs for.

Although things could always switch up, remember these are just kids with a once in a lifetime opportunity. When you were a teenager, wouldn’t you want to mingle with some of the best in the business? I for one know I would’ve, and I think you would’ve too.

Gill shows off his speed

After an injury, some athletes lose a step. From the looks of things, that’s not the case for Ohio State class of 2018 verbal commit Jaelen Gill of Westerville South.

Gill, a four-star running back, who could slide perfectly into the H-Back role for the Buckeyes, showed that he’s put his broken leg he sustained last season in the rearview mirror at the Under Armour illSpeed Final in Baltimore, Md. on Sunday afternoon.

A camp that puts some of the fastest, most athletic players in the country up against each other in a matter of different drills, Gill, who has also been invited to participate in Nike’s The Opening and the Rivals 5-star Challenge this summer, proved he’s back to full-health once again by winning the whole event.

The depth at Linebacker at Ohio State is a very talented group, but with three consecutive hauls at that very position, Ohio State is stocked full of potential starters and impact players at every position. Teradja Mitchell, prospect out of Virginia pulled the trigger for Coach Davis’ position group and joins another stellar Ohio State recruiting class that is only trailing Miami. Mitchell is an aggressive, hard-hitting Linebacker with the ability to play zone coverage. Mitchell excels at diagnosing the play and sticking his nose into the backfield. He plays with anger and hits so hard, the ball carrier is usually fumbling after contact. He is a throwback Linebacker that can plug-and-play if needed, but if he needs to redshirt, he will if it helps the team and Mitchell grow as a player.

Mitchell is supposedly 110% committed at this time and he will most likely be the one to start a chain reaction to get other blue-chippers to join the Ohio State class of 2018. He is already starting on social media in conversations with notable recruits like Micah Parsons and Carman Jackson, who Ohio State really want. We will have to see, but for now, we should enjoy this win over Florida State. It is likely others will come between now and National Signing Day, but we will see.

Johnny Carson (R.I.P.)

Ever see the show with the talking dog? Sadly, cannot find a video clip of it, though I did find this post. Not sure it's about the same dog, as I remember the owner being an older woman.

Answer by PoodlePup

OK I'm going to sound like I'm crazy, but YES! When I was 13 I lived near a man with Samoyeds who talked. He had these dogs on the Johnny Carson Show. You know, the one Jay Leno just gave up and Conan took over. LOL..Yep I'm old. The dogs name were Bing Crosby and Yukon Cornelius. I used to groom these dogs for him and take them for walks. he explained that all dogs could learn to do it and some did it naturally. Yukon did not inherit the ability from his father Bing, but he did learn and they understood questions. Mr Percle said that Bing was able to do more and that his ability was like throwing your voice. I know he wasn't doing it because when Bing was bathed once he looked at me and a friend and said "good bye" and went home! When I first told my mother about these dogs I was grounded for 2 weeks for lying!Mr Percle was an appliance repair man. When my mom's washer broke, she went to Mr. Percle. When she came out of the shop she apologized to me and said she had talk to the dogs and they answered her. I STILL remind her of being grounded about that.

http://www.answers.com/Q/Are_talking_dogs_real

Anyway, they had a dog on, and everybody was laughing it up because this silly person was crazy enough to think her dog could talk. Then the little mutt looked up and said "hello" as clearly as any human. The way I remember it, Carson's jaw dropped, he threw his arms in the air and swirled backwards around on his chair while the audience screamed. Best. Reaction. Ever.

Spoiler: the passing game has been an issue.

I’ve had the pleasure of tackling some incredibly important Ohio State coaching questions over the past two years. Does Urban Meyer typically blow teams out more than Jim Tressel did (kind of)? Who has had the best five-year start among Meyer, Tressel, and Woody Hayes (King Urban)? Today, we tackle another question only reserved for the slowest periods of the off-season: how has the look and efficiency of Ohio State’s offense changed from Tressel to Meyer?

With the help of Sports-Reference.com, I compiled the Ohio State offense’s per game averages from 2001 through 2016. The worst figures are in red and the best are in green. Without further ado, Ohio State’s offensive production from the last 16 seasons:

Ohio State Per Game Offensive Statistics 2001 - 2016

Bellisari.jpg

Let’s establish some takeaways...

Ohio State threw the ball more last season than ever before. In fact, it really wasn’t close. Ohio State averaged 31.5 pass attempts per game in 2016 and the next closest year was 2003 (28.2 pass attempts per game).

2014 marked the most productive passing season in recent Buckeyes history. That season saw 16-year highs in: passing yards per game, passing touchdowns per game, and yards per attempt.

Incredibly, 2014 was also nearly the most productive rushing season in recent Buckeyes history. The Zeke-led ground attack averaged 264.5 rushing yards per game along with 2.7 touchdowns on an average of 5.7 yards per carry. Still, this wasn’t enough to top the 2013 Buckeyes, who averaged an absurd 308.6 rushing yards per game with 3.2 touchdowns on an average of 6.8 (!!!) yards per carry.

Ohio State’s passing efficiency last season was their second-worst performance of the past 16 years. Only (gulp) the Luke Fickell-led 2011 Buckeyes averaged fewer yards per pass attempt. That’s right, Ohio State just made the final four with an offense that was barely more adept at throwing the ball than a Buckeyes team that once threw four total passes in an entire game against Illinois. At just 6.79 yards per attempt, Barrett and the Buckeyes failed to consistently pick up big yardage through the air. Perhaps this inability to control the air spilled over to the rush game, where the Buckeyes averaged 5.5 yards per rush — their lowest total since 2012.

The 2005 Troy Smith/Ted Ginn Jr./Santonio Holmes passing attack was lethal. Aside from averaging just 1.5 passing touchdowns per game, this group posted top-three marks in yards per game, completion percentage, and yards per attempt.

The worst rushing offense of Urban Meyer’s tenure was still better than Jim Tressel’s best rushing offense. The 2012 Buckeyes couldn’t make much happen through the air, and their ground game was fairly underwhelming as well compared to later years. Still, they gained 242 rushing yards per game with 3.1 touchdowns on an average of 5.2 yards per attempt — marks that would all be highs during Tressel’s 10 seasons.

Terrelle Pryor was really good in 2010. Not only did he post the highest completion percentage in the sample, but Pryor’s average of 8.53 yards per attempt was good for the fourth-highest mark. Meaning: Pryor was accurately shredding defenses down the field. It’s not a coincidence that Pryor had his lowest quarterback rating of the season during Ohio State’s lone loss to Wisconsin in 2010.

Let’s take another look at this data, but this time we’ll sort by who was coaching. I left Fickell out of this exercise since we’ve already spent too much time revisiting the (mostly) living hell that was the 2011 football season.

Urban Meyer/Jim Tressel Per Game Offensive Statistics 2001 - 2016

More takeaways...

Urban-led offenses have run more plays, picked up more yards, and scored more points than Tressel-led offenses. Who would’ve thought! Still, the disparity between the play count wasn't always so lopsided, as the Pryor-led offenses in 2009 and 2010 ran a similar amount of plays as some of Meyer's slower offenses.

Tressel surprisingly led a more explosive passing offense. It’s very close, but Tressel-led offenses averaged slightly more yards per attempt than Meyer-led offenses. Meyer’s teams have completed passes at a higher rate and scored more touchdowns, but the idea that Tressel never pushed the ball down the field clearly isn’t true.

Urban knows how to run the football. We discussed earlier how Meyer's worst rush offense was better than Tressel's best rush offense, but there's reason to believe this was due more to scheme than anything. Meyer has always utilized a quarterback that is a threat on the ground, while Tressel often leaned on running backs and seldom designed runs for his quarterback ... until 2010. After unleashing Pryor against the Oregon Ducks in the 2010 Rose Bowl, Tressel went all in with a spread offense designed around Pryor’s strengths for ensuing season. The result was Tressel's best rushing attack yet, as Pryor, Dan Herron, and Brandon Saine spearheaded an attack that averaged 220.1 rushing yards with 2.1 touchdowns per game on an average of 5.2 yards per carry.

During the course of a football season fans will often overreact to an issue that really isn’t as bad as it seems. Yes, Ohio State's rushing attack wasn't as good in 2014 as it was in 2013. As it turned out, the Barrett-Zeke attack was still the second-best rushing offense of the last 16 years.

With that said, sometimes fans hit the nail on the head. Watching Ohio State’s passing offense over the past two seasons has been an emotional roller coaster. There’s no denying that Barrett is among the best quarterbacks to ever play for Ohio State, but there’s also no denying that the Buckeyes’ pass offense has hit rock bottom in the Meyer era. We’ve seen the heights the offense can sore with an explosive passing offense, here’s to hoping Kevin Wilson and company can restore the Buckeyes’ aerial attack.
