We check in with four-star running back Jaelen Gill as he prepares for his senior season.

While four-star running back Jaelen Gill didn’t originally intend on committing to Ohio State, it was the Westerville native’s longtime love of his hometown Buckeyes that proved to be the ultimate deciding factor.

Gill received nearly 30 scholarship offers, choosing OSU over the likes of Michigan, Notre Dame, and USC.

Despite sustaining a fractured fibula last September near the beginning of his junior season, the 6-foot-1, 187-pound back is finally healthy. Taking a break from preparing for what he plans on being a special senior year, Gill spoke with us about his recruitment, why he chose OSU, and if Kevin Durant is really better than LeBron James.

(Note: Remarks lightly edited for clarity.)

Land-Grant Holy Land: You were recruited early and made your decision relatively late. What was the whole recruiting experience like for you?

Jaelen Gill: It started off really early. Ever since I got my first offer, it was just heavy. Around this time for a lot of people, there's nothing really happening, but I feel like it was just 24/7 with me. It's something you dream of growing up, just to have opportunities to go places and go where you want. I'm just blessed that I was able to do that.

LGHL: You had close to 30 scholarship offers and have said the Buckeyes weren’t in your original plans until last December. What changed your mind?

Gill: I grew up a Buckeye fan, so I was always going to have some sort of bias towards that school. Coach Meyer and Coach Alford started recruiting me real hard. I was talking to them every single day and I was seeing them a lot more. It's a great school, not only for sports, but academically. OSU is about 20 minutes away from my family and friends, so I just feel like I'd be missing out on a lot if I didn't stay home and play for the team I grew up watching.

LGHL: So what has you most exited to play for the team you grew up rooting for?

Gill: To be coached up and taught by some of the smartest people in the world. Coach Meyer is the best coach in college football, the people around him are great and I'm excited for them to help build me into a man.

LGHL: There’s been a fair amount of speculation as to what position you’ll actually play at OSU. Is it safe to say H-back?

Gill: I think I'll be an H-back. That'll probably be the best way for me to utilize all of my abilities. I'm versatile and that's the position for the kind of guys that can do it all, but I’ll still be getting carries out of the backfield. Who knows, maybe I'll split out wide, but I'm definitely an H-back.

LGHL: You fractured your fibula last September near the start of your junior season. Almost a year later, how are you feeling?

Gill: I feel great, I feel about 99.9% healthy. There are times when I'll cut a certain way and I'll feel it a little bit, but that'll just come with time. Running wise, I'm back to full speed and I think I'm actually faster now. Overall, I feel back to normal and I'm just blessed to be active again.

LGHL: You play baseball and run track on top of playing football. Is football going to be the only sport you play at OSU?

Gill: Coach Meyer and I have talked about playing baseball. I told him I might want to start that sophomore year so I can get a year of school and football under my belt. That's the plan so far and he's open to it. We’ll just see how my schedule is and that'll determine if I play or not.

LGHL: You were named the most valuable running back at Rivals' Five-Star Challenge. You were also invited back to Nike Football's The Opening Finals for the second-consecutive year. What does that say about you as a player?

Gill: It definitely shows that my hard work is paying off. My injury was just a minor setback for a major comeback. Hopefully, the people are seeing that I'm the same player and that I might even be better. There’s not too many players that are good year after year and get invited to these camps in consecutive years.

LGHL: The Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers to win the NBA Finals for the second time in three years. Ohioans obviously aren’t too pleased about it. What did you think of the Finals?

Gill: First off, I'm a Houston Rockets fan, but I’m a huge LeBron James fan, too, so I was disappointed. The Cavs should've won Game 3 and when they lost, I was heated. I can't stand all the fake Warriors fans.

LGHL: Kevin Durant was named the Most Valuable Player of the Finals. Some now believe he’s passed LeBron as the best basketball player in the world. Who’s the best in your mind?

Gill: Obviously, Kevin Durant is a great player, but he’s second behind LeBron. He averaged a triple-double the whole finals and would've up until Game 7 if the series continued. All he does is be great on and off the court. Durant's time will definitely come, though, it's just not now.

The Buckeyes hosted Johnson during a 1-day camp last week.

“Everything went well,” Johnson said. “I got a lot of feedback from the coaches on what I need to work on, such as footwork, hand movements, etc. It was a great camp altogether.”

Johnson enjoyed working with Larry Johnson.

“It was a great experience,” he said. “He taught me the ins and outs of becoming a great defensive lineman. The key is to have effort in everything.”

Johnson is hoping to see a few other big-time schools. He recently visited Alabama and will be at Notre Dame on Saturday. He says he’ll return to Ohio State in July for Friday Night Lights.

Even though he’s originally from Texas, the country’s 13th-ranked 2019 DT says a Buckeyes offer would be a game-changer.

LGHL Chris Holtmann may not add another player to the current Ohio State roster

There are still scholarship spots for the Buckeyes, but Holtmann may close the door.

"It's tempting to reach," Holtmann said Friday. "But I've been counseled by enough guys who've done this, who've reached and regretted it."

Bill Landis’ story on Chris Holtmann, and how reaching to fill roster spots may cause more harm than good. (cleveland.com)

Ohio State basketball has just 10 scholarship spots filled going into this season. While getting a more experienced basketballer, one that might be on the move from junior college or elsewhere, is an option, it doesn’t seem like a viable one for Holtmann.

In an article written by Bill Landis of cleveland.com, Holtmann knows the temptation to reach for a player that could help make the team better, but there is also a risk involved with doing that. Holtmann said he wanted “Ohio State guys” on the team, and by making a reach for another player, that ideology could be breached – with the potential for disfunction.

Currently on the team are two point guards with approximately one year of combined Division 1 experience, according to Landis. This seems like a problem, but Holtmann mentioned that Jae’Sean Tate might see some time at the PG position. The PG dilemma occurred when JaQuan Lyle reportedly quit the team back in April. In the Landis article, Holtmann mentioned that he hasn’t talked to Lyle – so it seems like Lyle’s career at OSU is over.

The fanbase around Ohio State basketball is eager to see the team rise to prominence once again. With Holtmann now in charge, he’s beginning to take the steps necessary to get the Buckeyes back to being competitive. Time will tell, but this season is shaping up to be a work in progress.

“Ohio State has also exponentially ramped up its creative department. This allows the program not only to produce a bulk of content — they do 500 graphics or videos a week — but to put out the right graphics.”

Zach Barnett on how Ohio State has become one of the elite recruiting programs, (Footballscoop.com)

Since taking over as head coach of the football program, Urban Meyer has brought the Buckeyes to the top of the recruiting rankings. The 2017 group finished with the No. 2 rating in the country; the 2018 class is currently sitting on top of the mountain at No. 1.

How does a program get to that level of recruiting? Zach Barnett of footballscoop.com wrote up a piece on just that, and looked into Ari Wasserman’s Cleveland Plain-Dealer profile of the recruiting department at OSU. The answer to why the Buckeyes are elite recruiters is simply one word: investment.

Investment of resources and time is how Ohio State was able to climb up the recruiting mountain – and now they stand as a Goliath. Mark Pantoni is the point-man in the recruiting department, and takes the time to review the recruit’s film and any information that’s available. Additionally, the social media graphics that get generated are personalized, and connect with the recruits.

Between Pantoni and the whole recruiting department, it’s no wonder that OSU has become the cream of the crop when it comes to recruiting.

2018 NBA Mock Draft

NBADraft.net

The 2017 NBA Draft has come and gone, and there wasn’t a basketball Buckeye drafted. One way-early NBA Draft preview for 2018 came out, and there is some belief that a Buckeye will hear their named called.

NBADraft.net were the ones to make their 2018 mock draft, and they have Keita Bates-Diop going at the No. 60 spot to Golden State. Eight freshman are projected to go in the first 10 picks of the draft, with Michael Porter, a Missouri Tiger, going as the overall No. 1 pick.

Granted, this is the way-to-early deep dive into next season, but if Bates-Diop is poking around the draft projections, that should make Buckeye fans feel good about this year.

The Buckeyes have gone two years without a pick. Who will end the skid?

This isn’t a surprise, but Ohio State didn’t have anybody picked in the NBA Draft last night. If your team isn’t awash in five-star talent, and you had a crummy season, it isn’t a surprise that NBA scouts weren’t making a beeline to Columbus.

That’s now two NBA Drafts in a row without a Buckeye getting picked, with D’Angelo Russell being Ohio State’s last drafted player. Now, Russell, even with his trade to the Nets, is still a big draft success story. But for a program used to sending kids to the NBA just about every season over most of the last decade, back-to-back empty drafts isn’t great.

Obviously, the NBA Draft isn’t the most important thing for Ohio State. The Buckeyes could, after all, win a bunch of games, and even compete for Big Ten titles, without getting players picked very often. But, being able to sell an NBA pipeline is a big deal for recruiting, an obvious priority for Ohio State, especially as they try to pull their program out of decline.

So getting some players picked would help change that conversation a bit. Will the streak break next season? Who could be Ohio State’s next draftee?

Keita Bates-Diop

KBD is probably the most draftable player on the roster who has actually played in a college basketball game. He has the recruiting pedigree (he was a high four-star player and a consensus top-100 recruit in his class), the size (he’s 6-7), and a specific skillset that can translate into what many NBA teams are looking for these days. An athletic player who can potentially guard multiple positions and hit a few threeballs is going to find himself in demand, after all.

There are questions, of course. KBD is an older prospect, he missed almost all of last season due to injuries, and he needs to demonstrate offensive consistency. But, with a big year at Ohio State, and if he can stay healthy, he may be able to play his way into the second round. One early mock 2018 mock draft has him penciled in as the 60th pick. There may be more.

Kaleb Wesson/Kyle Young

This is probably a stretch, but we can at least consider this possibility with a straight face. Neither player has played a college basketball game yet, and neither immediately project to be a one-and-done type of player, but with huge seasons at Ohio State, it’s at least possible.

Wesson and Young were the two top 2017 recruits in the state of Ohio, both high four-star players with interest from other major programs. Both should play real minutes for the Buckeyes next season, with Wesson having a clearer path to more playing time and touches.

Both will have plenty of questions to answer, not just about their NBA potential, but their ability to play big time Big Ten basketball. Namely, who are they going to defend? But, if not for next year’s NBA Draft, the raw potential is there for either of these young men to play professional basketball before their collegiate eligibility expires.

A player not currently on the roster

Other players on Ohio State’s roster right now would likely have to show some dramatic improvement to get on the NBA radar for the next season or two, and it is entirely possible that Ohio State’s next NBA draft pick isn’t even on the roster at the moment. The Buckeyes now have tons of 2018 scholarships to play with, and will pursue not only the top players in Ohio, but regionally and nationally. It might not be satisfying for Buckeye fans to hear, but it is entirely possible that Ohio State goes another year, or maybe even two, before their next pick.

With an entirely new coaching staff and relatively modest expectations for next basketball season, not having an NBA Draft pick in 2018 wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. But letting that streak get too much longer, especially as other Big Ten programs start sending more players to the NBA, could make the rebuilding project in Columbus even harder. Here’s hoping we hear some names called from the program relatively soon.

His talents will bolster a secondary that’s been among the best in college football of late.

What Jaiden Woodbey does on and off the football field has always been a little different than everyone else. It's why he calls himself a "certified weirdo" on Twitter and it's what earned the four-star safety a scholarship offer from Ohio State.

Regardless of any commitment, Woodbey is still working on his game in the hopes of making his mark as a Buckeye. The California native took some time out of his busy schedule to talk with us about why he picked OSU, his intense work ethic, and what he'll miss most about living out on the west coast.

(Note: Remarks lightly edited for clarity.)

Land-Grant Holy Land: Every player’s experience is different, so what was the recruiting experience like for you? Did you have a lot of people in your ear?

Jaiden Woodbey: It wasn’t hard, but it wasn’t easy at the same time. I did have a lot of people in my ear, like your parents, your coaches, your friends. I knew who to actually listen to and who to actually believe. I mean, it still goes on, I thought that it would change when I committed, but it actually has gotten a little bit more serious.

LGHL: With all the scholarship offers you received, why did you finally decide on OSU?

Woodbey: I picked Ohio State because I felt like the coaches were going to put me in the best opportunity to win. They had three defensive backs drafted in the first round this year, which is unheard of. So, you know, it’s like you want to go to a school that can actually say they can do that. I felt like OSU, they produce a lot of guys in the league, so you know it’ll be a great fit for me.

LGHL: Having committed, is it difficult to stay focused knowing that you’re already heading to OSU?

Woodbey: It’s the same schedule as if I had no offers. Just because I’m committed, it doesn’t mean anything. I still have to work until and after my signing date. That’s just always been my mindset. I’ve always grown up that way and my parents have always taught me to work hard no matter what, and that no matter what you’re going through, just know that you can persevere.

LGHL: You refer to yourself as a “certified weirdo” on Twitter. Why?

Woodbey: I just feel like what I do is a little bit different. Me driving an hour and a half every day to go to school, I feel like that’s different. I feel like my work ethic can take me to places I never would’ve imagined. I feel like I can outwork anybody and I know I will outwork anybody, as well. I’m cut from a different cloth.

LGHL: So, you’ll be living in Ohio for the foreseeable future. Being a California native, what will you miss most about living out on the west coast?

Woodbey: Waking up to some nice weather. The food, as well. They have some great Mexican food out here.

LGHL: There were more than just a few great hip-hop albums released in the past year. What are your top five?

Woodbey: My top five are Chance The Rapper’s album (Coloring Book), Kendrick Lamar’s album (DAMN.), those are my top two albums. I listen to those everyday. Culture by Migos is third, More Life by Drake is fourth, and I don’t know if I have a fifth.

The Buckeyes may be in a battle for one of the best prospects from the Great Lake State.

Today marks that we’re now 69 days away until Ohio State kickoffs against Indiana in the 2017 season opener. With time fleeting faster each day, the OSU football staff certainly has their work cut out for them in terms of getting another youthful roster ready to compete on the highest stage of college football. Poised to make another threat at a National Championship, Meyer knows just how critical the summer and fall camp is leading up to the season’s start. While getting the current roster ready for fall is one part of the job, another – equally important – part is recruiting.

Poaching season?

It’s been mentioned countless times, but recruiting for Ohio State is an endless business. One aspect that makes recruiting seemingly never-ending is when a rival state owns one of the nation’s top prospects. When it comes to Michigan, Devontae Dobbs (Belleville, MI / Belleville) is currently ranked as the No. 3 best offensive tackle in the country and the No. 2 overall player in the state of Michigan for the 2019 class.

A 6-foot-4, 270-pound monster, Dobbs is a prospect that can never get enough opportunities to develop his game. With how much Dobbs takes advantage of nearly every camp opportunity, it’s not hard to see why he owns nearly 40 scholarship offers and a five-star status. The Buckeyes will have to pay close attention to this stud, being that he’s behind enemy lines – and it would be huge to steal a prized recruit from Big Ten foes, but even more so because he’s easily one of the best players in the country.

Yesterday, the “Dean” of Ohio State recruiting, Bill Kurelic, took the time to write a piece on Dobbs, and to make known that Devontae certainly intends to visit Ohio State again this summer. While he’s certainly been no stranger around Columbus, Ohio, making several visits already, Dobbs has plans to visit Michigan today, but also Columbus once more proving this battle between rivals will only heat up even stronger.

As this race for Dobbs seems to be between Ohio State and Michigan, it’s important to realize Kerry Coombs has already gone into Michigan multiple times and poached a prize recruit under Michigan and Michigan State’s nose. Will it happen again in 2019? Time will only tell, but things certainly seem to be heading in the right direction.

Bucks still in it for 2018 OL

Oh look! Another day, another success story for Ohio State recruiting, as they find themselves yet again making the cut for a top prospect as he narrows his list of schools before making the final call. A trend that almost occurs daily, it’s hard to not take for granted the success Ohio State is having with their recruiting efforts nationwide.

Top 8 pic.twitter.com/iJ9TywexgI

— John Campbell (@_jcamp74) June 22, 2017

Yesterday, 2018 offensive tackle John Campbell (Orlando, FL / Dr. Phillips) cut his list to eight schools. Making the cut for Campbell were USC, UCLA, Miami, LSU, Florida, Auburn, Alabama and Ohio State.

The three-star, 6-foot-5, 285-pound stud is a top 40 tackle in the country and a top 100 prospect in the very talent-rich state of Florida. However, space in the class may be a problem, as the Buckeyes already have four-star tackle Max Wray in the fold, and are pursuing the top in-state OT in Jackson Carman.

As it stands now, the home-state Miami Hurricanes look like the ones to beat for his services, however, until pen hits paper, it’s anyone’s game.

Loving and Thompson now look to continue their careers elsewhere.

Now that all 60 names have been called in the 2017 NBA Draft, it is official that for the second year in a row, no former Ohio State players have been selected. This year, there were two Buckeyes eligible for the draft, senior forward Marc Loving and redshirt junior center Trevor Thompson. The pair must now likely need to look overseas or at the via the NBA G-League to continue their careers.

Loving finished his time in Columbus with 1,337 points, averaging 10 per game to go along with 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists. The Toledo-native entered his college career with sky-high expectations as a former Mr. Ohio Basketball. However, his perceived passive approach on and off the court led many Scarlet and Gray fans to view his time in Columbus as a bust. That being said, Loving leaves OSU as the seventh-highest scorer in the Thad Matta era.

Unlike Loving who had exhausted his collegiate eligibility, after transferring from Virginia Tech following his freshman year, Thompson could have returned to Columbus for one final season. However, the 6’11 big man finished his OSU career on a high note, averaging a career high 10.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game during his junior season.

With D’Angelo Russell remaining the last OSU player to be selected in the NBA Draft, this marks the first time since 2005-2006 that no Buckeyes were selected in consecutive years. That leaves the total players drafted from Matta’s tenure as coach at 10. The program had at least one player selected in every year from 2007 to 2013, before the Lakers selected Russell in 2015.

In addition to four former Buckeyes currently on NBA rosters (Mike Conley, Kosta Koufos, Russell, and Evan Turner), numerous players can be found in other professional leagues around the world, including the NBA’s recently renamed developmental G-League. While the option of being signed as an undrafted free-agent is a possibility, Loving and Thompson will more than likely have to look to begin their professional careers in a league other than the NBA.
