The Buckeyes assistant coaching staff is starting to take shape.

With a new head coach in place, the assistant coaching lineup for Ohio State basketball is in flux. During his presser today, Chris Holtmann said not to expect anything official immediately, but that doesn’t mean news isn’t starting to trickle out.

According to Jon Rothstein, two more Butler assistants are likely to join Holtmann in Columbus, including a very key name.

Terry Johnson & Ryan Pedon are expected to join Chris Holtmann's staff at OSU as long as BU finalizes deal with LaVall Jordan, per a source.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) June 12, 2017

Buckeye fans might recognize Ryan Pedon at this point. Thought to be the architect behind the highest ranked Butler recruiting class ever, Pedon is also very much a Columbus guy (he’s from Bexley and played basketball at Wooster). Pedon has also coached all over the state, including jobs at Toledo, Miami (OH) and Kent State, along with a stint at Illinois under John Groce.

Pedon was also thought to be a candidate to be Butler’s new head coach, a position now filled by Milwaukee head coach LaVall Jordan.

Johnson had coached at Auburn and IPFW (his alma mater), and also served as a director of basketball operations at Butler.

If both coaches are coming, it’s clear that Holtmann plans to double down on an Ohio and Indiana-centric recruiting strategy, while continuing the brain-trust that was so successful at Butler.

If the Buckeyes are serious about “closing the borders” of Ohio, this is probably a good start.

LGHL Joey Bosa and Ezekiel Elliott are already among the NFL’s best players

Joey Bosa and Ezekiel Elliott are already among the NFL’s best players

They may have just finished their rookie seasons, but their impact is here to stay.

“Bosa was utterly dominant in two seasons of PFF college grading, so nobody was less surprised than we were when he hit the ground running in the NFL in exactly the same way.”

-Sam Monson, Pro Football Focus

Football analysis site Pro Football Focus recently had high praise for two former Buckeyes in its ranking of the league’s 50 best overall players heading into the preseason. The ratings use advanced stats to compare an individual player against others at his particular position group. Chief among them were two rookies in running back Ezekiel Elliott and defensive end Joey Bosa, both of whom came off monster seasons in 2016. Wide receiver Michael Thomas, who earned a spot as a rookie on PFF’s “Top 101 players from 2016” list, was not included in the top-50 list.

Bosa earned the No. 13 spot on the list, despite missing the first four games of the season, and is the highest-rated rookie of the group. Bosa recorded 59 pressures in 12 games for the Chargers--the most by any player over a 12-game span. In addition to playing on both the right and left sides as a defensive end, Bosa showed his versatility lining up at outside linebacker as well, and PFF praised him as “one of the league’s most dominant defenders.” While he came in behind other top edge defenders like Khalil Mack (No. 6) and Vonn Miller (No. 7), Bosa can continue to improve by playing a full season in his second year in the league.

Elliott came in at the No. 45 spot in the rankings--the third running back behind Le'Veon Bell (No. 11) and David Johnson (N0. 15). While Elliott had one of the league’s best offensive lines blocking for him, including three linemen who made the top-50 list ahead of him, there is no doubting his dominance in running the ball (something Ohio State fans are already familiar with). Elliott’s 1,631 rushing yards totaled more than any other running back in the league--by at least 300 yards. He also averaged just under three yards after contact, which is a testament to his power-running ability.

“I had a passion for football, but it wasn’t meant to be. Now, acting feels like what I’m supposed to be doing. I’ve been blessed, but it took awhile.”

-Former Ohio State running back Maurice Hall, via Ken Gordon, The Columbus Dispatch

By this point, Buckeye Nation is familiar with former running back Eddie George’s stage-acting career--quite the successful post-football occupation for the former pro. Now, another former running back is finding success in his own acting career. Maurice Hall, who played at Ohio State from 2001-04 and who was a key part of the 2002 national championship team, is returning to Columbus this weekend for a screening of his film “Baker’s Man,” which he wrote, co-directed and starred in.

Hall began work on Baker’s Man in 2014, raising money through crowd-funding. The film is a romantic comedy that tells the tale of a wealthy philanthropist who provides grants to struggling businesses. The protagonist ultimately falls for the owner of a bakery who had been seeking a grant. The movie screened at the Gateway Film Center over the weekend, but can also be purchased through iTunes prior to the DVD release later this month.

After football (Hall was waived by the San Diego Chargers shortly after the 2005 NFL Draft), Hall worked in broadcasting in Columbus, sparking his interest in acting as it enabled him to be creative and “create something out of nothing.” While things got off to a slow start after his move to Los Angeles, Hall’s acting career finally broke through when he got a role on the Mindy Project in 2013. Since then, he has appeared in shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds and NCIS: New Orleans. Also in 2013, Hall married Jeanine Jennings, an emergency medicine physician in L.A., and the pair have two young daughters.

Those around Hall credit his work ethic for creating his success--the same work ethic that guided him on the football field. He still takes acting lessons and “works tirelessly at his craft,” according to a former teammate.

“You always have to practice,” said Hall.

“The Buckeye passing game seemed to make some strides in the spring game, but it’s hard to gauge real progress on a single intersquad scrimmage.”

-Dan Murphy, ESPN

The often-dismal passing attack of Ohio State last year was a key driver in the offseason moves that saw Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day join the Ohio State coaching staff as co-offensive coordinators. Now, the question remains if quarterback J.T. Barrett and his corps of young receivers will be able to live up to much higher expectations heading into the fall. The group showed promise in the spring game, but with fall camp starting soon, coaches will be able to better identify the issues that need to be worked on before the start of the season.

This season, Barrett has the likes of Johnnie Dixon, K.J. Hill. Terry McLaurin and Binjimen Victor. The crew collectively had some exciting moments last season, but accounted for few yards and just four touchdowns. With the loss of Curtis Samuel and Noah Brown, last season’s top receivers, to the NFL Draft, the younger receivers already had a tall order just to replace them. Barrett, the constant on offense for the past three seasons, has the rest of the summer to improve his passing game and to get in sync with his receivers.

On the other side of the ball, the secondary boasts a number of new starters who look to replace Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker and Gareon Conley, all of whom were taken in the first round of April’s draft. Damon Webb is the lone returning starter heading into the fall. However, this situation is nothing new for the Buckeyes, who just last year lost Eli Apple, Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell, leaving Conley as the sole returning starter in 2016. Given new talent like Denzel Ward and Damon Arnette, the Buckeyes should be able to have time to get experience in the secondary given the support from the loaded defensive front-seven.

GENE SMITH DISPELS RUMORS SURROUNDING OHIO STATE'S BASKETBALL COACHING SEARCH

That search pointed them to Chris Holtmann, who Smith says was his No. 1 target from the beginning. He didn't get him at first, though.

"He was my target. He was my target from the very beginning from Monday night. Then we offered him a job on Tuesday. He had trepidation."

The hesitancy caused Smith to up the ante.

"It was initially a seven-year contract [offer]. I did go to eight hopefully to push his wife over the edge.

"I didn't care about him. I cared about Lori," Smith joked. "I was trying to push her over the edge. [A six-year contract offer] was never on the table at all."

While Holtmann pondered his future, Smith checked over some other candidates.

The Columbus Dispatch reported Smith targeted Virginia Tech's Buzz Williams, West Virginia's Bob Huggins, and Providence's Ed Cooley after Arizona's Sean Miller and Xavier's Chris Mack rejected overtures. In a follow-up, it said Smith flew to Roanoke, Virginia to do so.

Though Smith didn't contend talks with other candidates, he denied flying to Roanoke—with a noted caveat.

"I was not in Roanoke. The plane was in Roanoke, but I wasn't on it. The reality is Tuesday and Wednesday I was traveling a lot. I spoke to a number of people. I met with a few people. But fortunately [Holtmann] and I agreed to meet Thursday morning."

That meeting occurred at an "unbelievable place" in Dayton.

"I was able to wake up and get my wife up after three hours of sleep to drive with me to Dayton. He did the same thing. He and Lori met me in Dayton. It was an unbelievable place. We sat and had a great conversation and got to know one another. He accepted the job. I called Eddie and said, 'We're done. Release everybody else. We got our guy.'"

The new Buckeye is excited to get things started in Columbus.

Ohio State men’s basketball has dominated sports headlines over the past week, beginning with the swift dismissal of head coach Thad Matta. It was an emotional week for current and former players, along with local high schools coaches -- but Athletic Director Gene Smith assured Buckeye fans they’d have a new leader in place by the end of the week.

With rumors abound, the team ultimately announced the hiring of Butler head coach Chris Holtmann. The new Buckeye coach took to the podium Monday to speak to the media after being formally introduced as the newest head coach.

Holtmann opened by expressing gratitude to all of the people he’s come across in his career that lead him to this opportunity. He thanked several of his mentors and former coaches who have helped him throughout his career. He went on to thank the fans, players and staff at Butler.

Holtmann also spoke about Thad Matta, and the importance of that relationship, which helped to bring the Butler coach to Ohio State. Holtmann went on to say that Matta is a man of great character and that he loves Ohio State, noting that it was very important to him that he had Matta’s blessing to take the job.

What are the plans for the current roster?

  • Holtmann specifically pointed out the current Buckeye players who were attending his press conference, and thanked them for being there to support him and this transition. The new coach said it was important to him to see them there and to begin establishing a strong relationship with them.
  • The new coach said that one of the things that he loved most about his initial meeting with the players was their connection to the Buckeye players who have come before them. The players emphasized how much they loved when former players come around, which will be a big focus and priority for Holtmann at Ohio State.
  • When asked about the current state of the program, Holtmann said it’s good, but obviously needs a bit of work. He again pointed out the current players, saying the reason that he is excited about the potential in Columbus is because of the guys in the locker room.
  • He said that he knows that when taking a position at a university like this, a program like Ohio State, you know that the expectations are high, but Holtmann isn’t going to shy away from that.
What will recruiting look like?

  • Holtmann is dedicated to closing the borders and keeping Ohio talent at Ohio State. He and his staff will work everyday to get the best talent from around the state and country to play for the Buckeyes.
  • He was asked when he planned on getting started with recruiting. Holtmann claimed that within the first hour of being eligible to reach out to recruits, he was on the phones. He wouldn’t mention who those calls went out to, but did reaffirm his focus on Ohio.
  • When asked about how he will handle one-and-done type players — something he hasn’t faced too much of at Butler — he said he’s still working through what that looks like. Ultimately, he is looking for Ohio State guys. He doesn’t want to put parameters on what that looks like just yet, but his priority is getting Ohio State guys.
  • “This place is incredible,” Holtmann repeated. He went on to talk about how people understand what this place is about, and thinks they’re going to have a great opportunity with recruits.
How will Holtmann fit in with Ohio State?

  • The new head coach said that this was a decision that he had to “work through”, but said that Gene Smith was “aggressive and persistent” to get him in the door. He knows that there is some work ahead of him, but that the combination of the university, passionate fanbase, athletic resources and recruiting territory was too hard to pass up.
  • Holtmann said, “I have a pretty good feel for our rival here”. He went on to say that he loves this school and the Big Ten, and feels comfortable with his history and experience with the program.
  • He’s embracing Buckeye fans off the bat, saying he’d love for people to say “Hi” if they see him out at the grocery store. He’s embracing every part of the Ohio State program, including the fans.
What happens to Jent, Paulus, etc...?

  • Holtmann said that the assistant hires will be coming in days or weeks, but it will be done quickly. He didn’t get into specifics, but he noted, “We’re going to build an incredible staff. I’m extremely excited about that”.

What led the Tennessee native to commit to the Buckeyes? We found out.

Well that didn’t take long.

As expected Ohio State locked up their 13th verbal commitment of the 2018 cycle on Sunday afternoon. Picking the Buckeyes over the likes of Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee, three-star rated running back Master Teague knew Columbus, Ohio was the right spot for him as soon as he earned his scholarship during Friday’s summer camp.

“There were several things that caused me to like OSU., the Murfreesboro, Tenn. native stated to Land-Grant Holy Land.

“I really liked their culture. I liked what they do with Real Life Wednesdays. I like the internships I saw their guys go on. I like the Athletes in Action opportunities. I like that Coach Meyer is not only feel responsible for helping his guys get an education but also getting a job. I like that we will be able to win a national championship. I am a very motivated person but the coaches at OSU added more motivation in me that was unique,” The 5-foot-10, 210-pound standout added on his decision to commit to OSU.

Committing to OSU before he left campus, Urban Meyer and crew shared his excitement to join the Buckeyes.

“During the camp we were invited into Coach Meyer's office and he said before we could sit down that he wasn't going to beat around the bush and said that I had an offer. My parents and I told him and Coach Wilson that we had look at all the schools closely and that we were ready to choose OSU. Coach Meyer said he was excited to take my commitment and gave me a hug.”

With Teague now in the class, he’s ready to get to work. Not just looking to help the Buckeyes on the field, he’s ready to help them off the field. Even though he doesn’t have any prospects pinpointed, he plans to try to convince others to call the 614 their future home.

“I will help with recruiting anyway that I can,” said Teague, who rushed for over 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns last season as a junior at Blackman High School.

Want to know what Master Teague will add to the Buckeyes offense? Land-Grant Holy Land has your back.

Buckeyes dish out offers

Teague wasn’t the only prospect to pick up an offer from the Buckeyes. While Master might’ve been the only the only one to jump on his chance to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray, a number of other highly sought after recruits reportedly earned an opportunity to play at Ohio State during summer camps this weekend.

Below are just some of the talented prospects to catch Ohio State coaches eyes during the last few days:

3-star WR Cameron Brown

Class: 2018

Town: Saint Louis,MO/Christian Brothers College

Size: 6’1/175

Offers: OSU Nebraska, Alabama, Georgia, Wisconsin, etc

Notes: Committed to Nebraska until he received his offer from the Buckeyes, Brown decommitted from the Cornhuskers just one day later. A teammate of key OSU target Kamryn Babb, could the show-me-state standouts head to Columbus together? I guess we’ll find out?

3-star CB John Dixon

Class: 2019

Town: Tampa,FL/Wharton

Size: 5’10/170

Offers: OSU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Maryland, Oregon, etc

Notes: The Buckeyes might have a Johnnie Dixon on the roster, but not their looking to add another Sunshine native Dixon to the roster. No relation to the wide out, John isn’t the biggest defensive back, but has shown big play ability, accounting for over 40 total tackles and two interceptions last season as sophomore for the Wildcats.

Very blessed and honored to receive an offer from THE Ohio State Buckeyes ⚪#buckeyes #brutus @Corey_Bender pic.twitter.com/rEguB0r4tw

4-star ATH Bryan Addison

Class: 2018

Town: Gardena,CA/Junipero Serra

Size: 6’3/160

Offers: OSU, Michigan, Arizona State, Oregon, USC, UCLA, etc

Notes: Probably pegged to play defensive back on the next level, Addison has shut down big time west coast players on the high school level. Just growing into his body, he showed he isn’t shy to come up and lay the wood too. Last season at Serra, he racked up 52 total tackles and three interceptions.

BOSTON, MA – APRIL 17: Dion Phaneuf #2 of the Ottawa Senators prepares for a faceoff in overtime against the Boston Bruins in Game Three of the Eastern Conference First Round during the 2017 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at TD Garden on April 17, 2017 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

I’ll get around to posting the 2016-17 Ottawa Senators eulogy someday, but in the meantime, there were some pretty interesting Sens-related thoughts in Elliotte Friedman’s latest ’30 Thoughts’ article.

With the conclusion of the NHL season being just hours or days away, the rumour mill and discussion leading up to the NHL expansion draft will heat up.

In Ottawa, we already knew that the conditions of Bobby Ryan’s contract do not preclude the Senators from automatically having to protect Ryan, but there has been quite a bit of speculation regarding the status of Dion Phaneuf.

Unlike Ryan, Phaneuf would have to agree to waive his no-movement clause (NMC) in order for the Senators to leave him unprotected for the expansion draft.

Thanks to the four years and $25.5-million that is remaining on Phaneuf’s contract, the prevailing sentiment is that the terms of Phaneuf’s deal should deter Las Vegas from ever putting in a claim.

Under the expansion draft guidelines, teams can protect eight skaters or seven defencemen and three forwards. By asking Phaneuf to waive his NMC operating under the belief that Vegas will not touch him, the Senators can essentially protect an extra defenceman.

In theory, it’s a no-brainer, but no one was really sure if the Senators would go down this path with Phaneuf.

Through the years, the hockey operations department has often handled its business by doing right by its veteran players. (Read: I’m just going to ignore that whole Daniel Alfredsson leaving for Detroit thing.)

According to Friedman however, it is believed that the Senators have asked Phaneuf to waive his NMC.

9. At his season-ending media conference, Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion said the Senators “would discuss internally” the possibility of asking Dion Phaneuf to waive his no-move, adding, “If ever we were to go that direction, I think I should let Dion know first.”

Dorion isn’t commenting, but word is Phaneuf was indeed asked to waive. That would allow Ottawa to protect Cody Ceci, Erik Karlsson and Marc Methot. I think the Senators have been asked a lot about Ceci over the past year, but they wisely held on. We’ll see what Phaneuf decides. I think Ottawa is sensitive to this one, because they feel Phaneuf has been a terrific teammate since he got there.

There’s a lot to digest here.

The Senators could placate whatever concerns Dion has by agreeing to trade a draft pick, prospect or player to Las Vegas to ensure that they don’t select him, but ideally the Senators don’t waste an asset protecting a player that Vegas should have little interest in. (And if the Golden Knights actually threaten to pick Phaneuf in an effort to extract a draft pick from the Senators, Dorion should tell George McPhee to put his money where his mouth is.)

In the worst-case scenario, Phaneuf could simply refuse to waive his NMC, meaning that the Senators are faced with the possibility of losing one of Marc Methot, Cody Ceci or Chris Wideman. The Senators would trade Methot or Ceci before losing them for nothing to expansion, but I don’t know if that sentiment would hold true for Wideman.

Although I really like Wideman’s ability to transition the play and move the puck up ice, the offensive production that he demonstrated in the AHL has not really manifested during his time in the NHL. In other words, without those sexy numbers that you find on the back of a hockey card, almost all of Wideman’s value is tied to his possession numbers and underlying metrics. The same metrics that made general manager Pierre Dorion want to punch his analytic people in the face whenever they suggest that Mark Borowiecki is not an effective player.

Friedman’s note on Ceci is interesting for a few reasons. On one hand, the Senators have a tendency to use the media and NHL insiders like Friedman to disseminate information about the availability of their players. They do it all the time to let teams know of perceived interest which helps pump up player’s value. I don’t know whether this is the case here with Friedman indicating that Ceci’s a player who has garnered a lot of attention over the year and that the Senators were wise to hang onto him, but it’s something to be mindful of.

On another note, Cody Ceci is a player that the Senators would be wise to flip and cash in on. The market for 23-year old right-shot defencemen is ridiculous right now and the Senators would be wise to cash in. His blend of age, handedness and pedigree will still enticing some general managers to overpay for him, but under the hood, he is a player that the Senators should not have a difficult time finding an upgrade or a replacement-level alternative. Relative to his on-ice contributions, he’s a player who undeniably brings more value to the organization as a trade chip.

Whether the Senators go down that route remains to be seen, but depending on how the market is, this may be the last chance for the organization to sell high.

The Buckeyes stayed hot on the recruiting trail, and once again they pulled another talented prospect out of the prized SEC territories to bolster their ranks. Teague is a Running Back out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and he stands at 5’11”, 214 lbs. He is 4-star prospect on 24/7 and a 3-star on the Rivals and Scout services, but he earned his way onto this class with a stellar camp performance in front of the Buckeye Coaches that earned him an offer. Teague finished his day with a logged 42.5 vertical, 10.8 for the broad jump and a blazing 4.31 on the 40-yard dash, which all but secured the coveted offer from the Buckeyes.

Teague is a load at his position and he brings a lot of tools to the Buckeyes backfield. He has the vision that the position requires and he is not afraid of seeking out contact from the defenders. He has the ability to break away with his blazing speed, but could also break tackles and bull over defenders. He runs with power, purpose and aggressively, which is like a throwback back, and it will fit nicely for the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes are reaping the benefits of having another talented member of the 2018, who is from nearby Franklin, Tennessee in Max Wray, which helped Teague because they are from the same state. As the Buckeyes build toward the future, the future is looking brighter.
