There is strong indications that the best guard from the 2018 class will visit the Buckeyes.

Buckeyes in pursuit of top OG

According to a report by 247Sports’ Bill Kurelic, top offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer (Atlanta, GA / Pace Academy) will definitely be making an official visit to Ohio State. Salyer is rated as the No. 9 overall player in the country as well as the top offensive guard in the 2018 class.

Ohio State has kept a strong relationship with Salyer over the last couple years and sit near the top of his list as we head to the second half of the summer. Though the Buckeyes have done an excellent job in this recruitment, it still looks as if the home-state Bulldogs will be tough to beat. Nevertheless, the interest remains high and a good official visit could shake some things up for the 300-pound road-grader.

Over 25 offers have come Salyer’s way, including the likes of Clemson, Stanford and Alabama to go along with Bulldog and Buckeye offers. According to the 247sports crystal ball, Georgia holds 69 percent of the predictions, while Clemson holds the remaining 31 percent. Even though 13 predictions were cast, the Buckeyes will have an upfield battle if they were looking to get a commitment from the five-star prospect.

Peters commits to Kentucky

Ohio outside linebacker Xavier Peters made a commitment to Kentucky on Tuesday evening. Peters is a top 300 player, according to 247Sports, and the No. 8 player in the Buckeye State for the 2018 recruiting cycle. The Scarlet and Gray last had a visit with Peters back on April 14, according to 247sports.

Peters has elite size at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds. Ohio State has not extended an offer to Peters as of right now, but you have to think that as we get closer to signing day, and if there’s an open spot, Ohio State could make a move and become a legitimate player in this recruitment.

MotS&G Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Defensive Line

Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Defensive Line
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

The biggest strength of the Ohio State defense, the Rushmen, will wreak havoc this season. After losing multiple starters to the NFL Draft over the past two years, Ohio State managed to return their key D-Linemen for at least one more season in the Scarlet and Gray.

At Defensive End, both starters from last year, Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis have returned and the will lock down the two starting positions for the Buckeyes. Behind them, Nick Bosa, Jalyn Holmes and Dre’Mont Jones wait patiently to spell the aforementioned starters or during the Rushmen Package.

Defensive Tackle is the most open out of all the positions with Dre’Mont Jones returning and Tracy Sprinkle returning from injury from a season ago. Michael Hill also has spent some time as a starter, and he will look to build further because his eligibility is running out. Sprinkle was supposed to be the starter coming into last season, but an injury prevented him from starting.

Jones, Sprinkle and Hill will be fighting for the starting spot, while trying to stave off Landers who shined during spot duty. Davon Hamilton will be nursing his broken foot and is this years Sprinkle, with an unfortunate injury.

The depth at Defensive Linemen is similar to what Coach Meyer had at Florida and the talent is in place. Year after year, they team adds a couple of highly touted and quality recruits, and all of them train to make each other better.

A few names to watch for are Robert Landers, Jashon Cornell, Haskell Garrett, Jerron Cage and Chase Young. They add to the depth of the team and they all will be looking for a more permanent role on the team. The biggest advantage is that they could all play and most of the DL are versatile and could play multiple positions. It will be up to Coach Johnson to decide, but this will be an exciting group of players to watch for years to come.

LGHL Ohio State’s Jamarco Jones hoping to make leap in 2017

Ohio State’s Jamarco Jones hoping to make leap in 2017
Ian Cuevas

usa_today_9544363.0.jpg

Jones has been with the Buckeyes for four seasons and is looking to improve upon his game.

“It has been his approach to the game, specifically to his technique and knowledge of the offense — he spends more time preparing each day and is one of the most intelligent guys I have been around. That preparation has led to him becoming a better player, and that has spread to the rest of the offensive line.”

- Greg Studrawa via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Senior offensive tackle Jamarco Jones has been somewhat of a staple of the offensive line for the Buckeyes these past few seasons, and 2017 will be no different. Protecting J.T. Barrett’s blindside will continue to be Jones’ role on the team, but he’s still looking to improve his game to help Ohio State reach another College Football Playoff. Jones is in the best shape of his life, according to him, sitting at 310 pounds, which is the same weight he had when he first joined the Buckeyes. The difference now is that most of the 310 pounds is muscle.

Jones has also been working on his technique (as much as you can without pads, at least) and his foot speed has been improving as well. Jones knows if he can make himself the best player he can be, then the offensive line will have a much easier time than in recent years. With the disappointment from the loss to Clemson in the national semifinal game still lingering in the minds of the Buckeyes, they’re eager to put the pads back on and continuing to strive to be ready for the season opener against Indiana.

“There are some holes on the depth chart, but this is the biggest and most pressing. Fifteen months ago, C.J. Jackson was still at Eastern Florida State. Now, he’s the only true point guard on Ohio State’s roster after the departures of JaQuan Lyle and Braxton Beverly.”

- Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

The recent departures from the Ohio State basketball team are a little worrisome as Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch pointed out. The most significant hole on the Buckeyes right now is at the point guard position, where Ohio State has only one true point guard on the roster. C.J. Jackson transferred from Eastern Florida State and just like that, he may end up playing heavy minutes or perhaps even starting depending on how the rest of the team shapes up.

Derek Funderburk and Braxton Beverly leaving the program came at a time of transition, as Chris Holtmann is entering his first season as head coach of Ohio State. Losing two players from the start doesn’t help his hopes for an improved season, but he also has helped bring in some talent from his recruiting class at Butler. It will be up to him and the rest of his coaching staff to make sure the Buckeyes come out well prepared for the season.

“27. Dallas Cowboys (13-3): Tyquan Lewis, DE, Ohio State. 30. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5): Jerome Baker, OLB, Ohio State.”

- Jared Dubin, CBS Sports

Mock draft season is year-long, and CBS Sports has released its 2018 NFL mock draft. The first round includes two members of Ohio State: Tyquan Lewis and Jerome Baker. Lewis is perhaps the most obvious choice for the Buckeyes, as he’s dominated at defensive end for the past couple of seasons alongside Sam Hubbard and Joey Bosa. Lewis, with a strong 2017 campaign, could solidify himself as a top choice at defensive end and ensure himself a spot in the first round of the NFL draft.

Baker, meanwhile, had a breakout season in 2016, when he filled in for the injured Dante Booker. He really made a splash against Oklahoma on a national stage and hasn’t really looked back since. With his performances over the course of the year, his stock has surely risen and if he continues to be successful on the field, there’s no reason he can’t improve further and get himself up to that first round status.

Elite tight end included Ohio State in his top four schools.

With the country’s most prestigious camp, The Opening, coming to an end yesterday, Ohio State related recruiting news continued to break.

The biggest news broke following the end of the first 7-vs-7 semifinals when one of the country’s top tight ends in the 2018 recruiting class released his top four schools via Twitter.

Jeremy Ruckert (Lindenhurst, NY / Lindenhurst) has received a reported 30 scholarship offers throughout his recruitment and officially narrowed his list down to four schools Monday: Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Wisconsin.

Final 4 it's official!! I'll be committing to one of these 4 schools in the next few weeks. Stay tuned‼️ #Blessed pic.twitter.com/SGdD6h9WuD

— Jeremy Ruckert (@Jeremy_Ruckert1) July 3, 2017

Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes have been heavily recruiting the four-star TE from practically the beginning of his recruitment and have made it well known he is a priority for them. After closing up its 2017 recruiting class void of a TE commitment, the position was one of the biggest needs going into the recruiting season this year.

Ohio State has its hands full in securing a commitment from Ruckert though. While he visited Columbus back in January for Ohio State’s junior day, he has since taken unofficial visits to both Michigan and Notre Dame and walked away impressed with both schools.

However, despite the increase in attention from the other schools, Ohio State is still viewed as the runaway favorite to land Ruckert when it is all said and done. The program holds 100% of the 247Sports Crystall Ball Predictions and the Buckeyes coaching staff has made sure to keep good communication with him as well.

Ruckert also mentioned in his tweet that he plans to announce his decisions in the next few weeks, so expect a commitment announcement before the end of July.

4-star LB could commit to OSU this week

Ohio State has already earned commitments from two blue-chip linebacker recruits in its 2018 class and it appears as if another elite LB talent will join them sooner rather than later.

K’Vaughan Pope (Dinwiddie, VA / Dinwiddie) has been on Ohio State’s radar for a long time now and the early work the Buckeyes coaching staff put in will likely be paying off very soon. The four-star ILB has been on Ohio State’s campus twice since April, most recently attending a camp in June when some thought he could be on commitment watch. However, following the camp Pope left Columbus without doing so.

It seems that was not due to a lack of interest in the school because during The Opening, he spoke with Jeremy Birmingham of Landof10.com and said that he wants to commit to Ohio State this week, more than likely Friday.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound backer is currently ranked as the No. 8 ILB in the 2018 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and is one of the top 150 recruits in the class overall.

Adding Pope to Teradja Mitchell and Dallas Gant would make the linebacker position one of the strongest group halls in Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class. All three are top 150 players and are seen as some of their best at their respected positions.

Make sure to keep with Land-Grant Holy Land this week as we will be following Pope’s commitment closely.

Although any of the five are really great options...

“Under Meyer, the Buckeyes have one perfect season, a national title, a Big Ten Championship and two College Football Playoff appearances. It truly is a golden era of Ohio State football.”

-Tim Shoemaker, Eleven Warriors

Urban Meyer’s tenure at Ohio State has brought unprecedented success in his five seasons. With a 61-6 record, no team has had fewer losses and only Alabama has more wins in the same time frame.

Of the five teams fielded, there is little doubt that the 2014 College Football Playoff victors have been the best group under Meyer. Ending the season ranked No. 1, the Buckeyes defeated Alabama and Oregon in the first playoff. But what makes the team even more remarkable is the extremely low expectations heading into the season. With Braxton Miller sidelined with a shoulder injury, a virtually unknown J.T. Barrett, coming off his redshirt season after being sidelined with an ACL injury, earned the starting spot. Things did not improve as the Buckeyes lost to Virginia Tech at home week two. But then the young team kicked it into gear as Barrett settled into his starting role and Ezekiel Elliott began running all over opponents behind a much-improved offensive line. Even Barrett’s season-ending injury against Michigan didn’t slow Ohio State’s momentum, as Cardale Jones stepped in to give the Buckeyes a 59-0 win against Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game and, ultimately, a national title.

The 2015 squad is likely the next-best team of the Meyer era, especially given the amount of NFL talent on the roster, including Elliott, Joey Bosa, Michael Thomas, Eli Apple and Darron Lee. However, the unlikely loss to Michigan State at home ruined hopes of a repeat title. Still, the team ended the season on a high note, routing Notre Dame 44-28 in the Fiesta Bowl.

The 2013 team, which lost to Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship Game, then fell to Clemson in the Orange Bowl, is next on the list. Last year’s team, with a regular season loss to Penn State before a horrifying shutout defeat against Clemson, is fourth. Finally, and somewhat surprisingly, Meyer’s only undefeated team at Ohio State--the 2012 Buckeyes--is last. Despire going 12-0, Ohio State was not eligible for postseason play. If they were, they likely would have faced Notre Dame for a shot at a national title.

“If Jones’ poor showing in minicamp is a foreshadow to training camp, Jones could be looking for a new team, and soon.”

-Robert Quinn, Bills Wire

Former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones is just two seasons removed from winning a national title at Ohio State, and one year removed from being taken in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, foregoing his final year of eligibility with the Buckeyes. But after just one season as a rookie with the Bills, Jones is fighting an uphill battle just to remain on the team.

Jones was drafted for his unique set of physical abilities. He is a massive presence in the pocket, standing at 6-foot-5, 249 pounds, but is still mobile. And he has a cannon for an arm. But issues with his accuracy have plagued him in his short time in Buffalo. After failing to impress in the preseason, Jones didn’t see much playing time until the end of the season last year, seeing the field only for the Bills’ regular season finale against the New York Jets. He completed 6-of-11 passes for 96 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in the 30-10 loss.

After ending the season with a 7-9 record, Buffalo was eliminated from playoff contention for the 17th-straight year--the longest active drought among the four major sports (yes, even longer than the Browns’ drought). The Bills then cleaned house, firing head coach Rex Ryan after just two seasons and general manager Doug Whaley, who had been one of Jones’ biggest backers during his rookie season. Even worse for jones, the Bills brought in 30-year-old veteran T.J. Yates from Miami, who played under newly-named offensive coordinator Rick Dennison while they both were in Houston. Yates is an inch shorter and more than a few pounds lighter than Jones, and his arm isn’t nearly as strong. But he knows that Dennison’s schemes require a more finesse game than Jones has proven himself able to perform. With the Bills also drafting Nathan Peterman from Pittsburgh who, like Yates, fits better in a scheme which emphasizes accuracy, and Tyrod Taylor still the projected starter, Jones is starting from the bottom of a four quarterback mix to make the roster in Buffalo.

An Aaron Craft Update

Le meneur de jeu américain Aaron Craft est Monégasque ! #DagheMunegu https://t.co/M3iuc3lvSi pic.twitter.com/S9qWOzNB0i

— AS Monaco Basket (@ASMonaco_Basket) July 2, 2017

Former Ohio State point guard Aaron Craft has signed with French basketball team AS Monaco, just days after celebrating with his college head coach Thad Matta and a number of other former Buckeyes. The 6-foot-2 guard had an incredibly successful career at Ohio State from 2010-2014, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors in both 2012 and 2014 for the Big Ten. He was also named the conference’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2011 after leading the Buckeyes in both assists and steals. But perhaps Craft’s best moment at Ohio State came in 2013, when he hit a three-point game winner with half a second left to defeat Iowa State and earn a Sweet 16 bid.

After graduating, Craft, who was also a three-time, first-team academic All-American, went undrafted, but was picked up by the summer league teams for both the Orlando Magic and Golden State Warriors. Craft did eventually earn a contract to play with Golden State, but was ultimately waived. In the fall, the Santa Cruz Warriors, affiliate of Golden State, picked up Craft for the season. While in Santa Cruz, Craft earned a D-League Championship and was named the D-League Defensive Player of the Year. For the last couple years, Craft has been playing overseas, first in Hungary with Szolnoki Olaj, then in Italy with Aquila Basket Trento. Last season, Craft was a key leader in Trento’s postseason run.

Craft is already listed as a starter for AS Monaco. He is one of two Americans on the French squad, which went 31-6 last season in French League play. The team is in the top-tier French basketball league, and participates in the newly-established Basketball Champions League, a group established by FIBA for European leagues.
