If the Buckeyes could get Dobbs out (and away) from Michigan, it would be a huge get.

The college football recruiting world in now in the quiet period which greatly limits contact between coaches and the players they are recruiting. Though news was sparse yesterday, there was some things worth taking note of.

Dobbs to FNL

According to reports, 2019 offensive tackle Devontae Dobbs will be making a trip to Columbus for Friday Night Lights. Dobbs, from Michigan, is currently rated as the No. 1 tackle in the country and the No. 18 overall player. Dobbs has excelled on the camp scene this summer and continues to rise each time a rating update is released.

Country's No. 1 2019 offensive tackle @Devontae_Dobbs will return to #OhioState for Friday Night Lights FREE https://t.co/n1RbiQnK5m

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) July 11, 2017

Ohio State has done a good job putting themselves in a position in this one as there is big-time mutual interest between both parties. Dobbs last visited Columbus in April. Though Ohio State is near the top of his list, they will have their work cut out for them going up against the in-state Wolverines. Kerry Coombs has taken the lead in this recruitment and will be looking to pull in yet another elite out of state prospect.

Smith not making it to FNL

Class of 2018 defensive end Tyreke Smith tweeted that he will not be able to make it to Friday Night Lights, but will be working to be back on campus soon. Ohio State has emerged as the favorite for Smith after he has also had a good summer. Penn State looks to give the Buckeyes the most competition to land his services.

I will not be able to make Ohio states Friday Night Lights...But I will be back in Columbus soon ❗

— Tyreke Smith™ (@T_23_baller) July 11, 2017

Currently, on the 247sports crystal ball, Smith has an overwhelming 92 percent of recruiting analysts believing he’ll go to the Buckeyes, and 8 percent seeing him head off to University Park, Penn. and the Nittany Lions.

We’ll definitely keep you posted if anything changes in this race for one of the top prospects from Ohio’s 2018 recruiting cycle.

LGHL Former Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk is ready for life after football

The Buckeye legend had a great career at both the college and professional level but is ready to succeed in retirement.

“I’ll always miss playing the game and I’ll forever be grateful for all it has given me, and I’m pretty determined to not end up as a retirement horror story.”

- A.J. Hawk, The Players’ Tribune

A.J. Hawk is quite the legend around Columbus, Ohio for his dominance with Ohio State during his years with the Buckeyes. A fearsome linebacker that made quite the career for himself in the NFL, Hawk finished with 644 tackles during his tenure at the professional level and was a staple of the Green Bay Packers defense for much of his time there. Now, Hawk is headed for retirement after short stints with the Bengals and Falcons. But Hawk is aware of the problem many players who retire from the NFL face. Like he mentions in his article, there are a lot of players who simply don’t know what they can do as passionately as they played football and are stuck in sort of a limbo for the rest of their lives in some cases.

Hawk is determined to make the most of his retirement, though. He’s already planning on filling his schedule with plenty of appearances and wants to pursue a career in broadcasting - something that has become common among former players at the professional level of sports. Regardless of where he ends up or what he does, you can rest assured Hawk won’t be one of those retirement stories that people want to avoid.

“[Award Watch List] John Mackey Award: Marcus Baugh, Rimington Trophy: Billy Price.”

- Ohio State Buckeyes

It’s award season once again, and you know that means Ohio State will be involved. There have already been a few announcements as to who made the watch list for several other awards, but the John Mackey award (nation’s top tight end) and the Rimington Trophy (nation’s top center) announced their watch lists for the season. Marcus Baugh from Ohio State made the cut on the watch list after contributing 24 receptions for 269 yards in 2016. If he can replicate his success from last season this year, Baugh has a chance to finish into school history as a top 10 tight end in terms of receptions.

The other Buckeye to make a watch list was Billy Price. Another senior for Ohio State, Price has been a solid contributor on the offensive line his whole career and he is a returning first-team All-American and all-Big Ten Conference honoree. The past three seasons, Price hasn’t missed a game as a starter and will try to follow the footsteps that Pat Elflein left behind after winning the Rimington Trophy last season before jumping into the NFL.

Unlike last year, when Oklahoma had to open with a "neutral site" game against Houston (still in Houston by the way) before playing Ohio State, the Sooners have a much easier road to the Buckeyes this time around. Oklahoma opens at home against UTEP on Sept. 2 before traveling to Columbus.

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Bill Landis of Cleveland.com is going through each of the opponents Ohio State faces this season and giving a percentage chance of that team beating the Buckeyes. This season, when Ohio State hosts Oklahoma in Columbus, Landis gives the Buckeyes a 43 percent chance to lose to the Sooners. Last season, in the same sort of article, Landis gave Ohio State a 70 percent chance to lose when they traveled to Norman, Okla. After a big win over Oklahoma, the Buckeyes rolled their way to the College Football Playoff (after a road bump against Penn State) and the Sooners also finished strong, not losing another game.

This season, things are a little different for Ohio State. And a lot is different for the Sooners. To start off, they no longer have Bob Stoops at the helm after he announced his retirement. Baker Mayfield returns but does lose some weapons in the forms of Joe Mixon, Dede Westbrook and Samaje Perine. So the Sooners will have to find some new playmakers that Mayfield can work with. The good news, in addition to Mayfield, is that Oklahoma returns an experienced offensive line that should improve even more from last season. Either way, it’s sure to be a top game in the second week of college football that should bring plenty of eyes upon the Horseshoe.

We’re counting down the most important Buckeyes for the 2017 season.

When looking at the 2017 depth chart compared to the 2016 depth chart, there are noticeable holes, but the team is in a much better place now than it was entering the 2016 season after a mass exodus of NFL departures and graduation. Using key departures, spotlighting players at important positions, leadership qualities, and recognizing the depth at each position, we came up with the 10 most important players on the team. They may not be the most heralded players, or even the best players, but they will be vital to this team’s on-field success.

No. 9: Parris Campbell

Position: H-Back

2016 stats: 13 receptions, 121 yards; 4 carries, 54 yards, 1 TD; 21 kick returns, 584 yards

Why he’s No. 9: After spending the first two seasons of his career as an outside receiver in Ohio State’s sub-par aerial attack, the former St. Vincent- St. Mary standout officially made the switch to H-back, where he has gigantic shoes to fill—Curtis Samuel’s shoes, to be exact. Samuel gained 1,636 yards from scrimmage and was Urban Meyer’s do-everything guy and most electrifying player last season. But after underperforming as an outside receiver, yet making plays on special teams — especially as a kick returner — Campbell will have a chance to shine as the starter in the most creative role in Meyer’s offense.

Since we haven’t had many chances to see Campbell with the football in his hands, the best way to gauge his future success was in the spring game, where he flat out looked the part. What we learned from the spring game is that Kevin Wilson will make J.T. Barrett get the ball out of his hands much quicker than ever before, and he’s going to utilize Campbell on a bunch of quick hitters such as screens, shallow crossers and quick outs. Campbell will also be able to use his quickness on banana routes and corner patterns. If the spring game showed us anything, Campbell will be extremely busy under Wilson.

One could argue that Campbell could be in the top five on this list, but with playmakers such as K.J. Hill, Demario McCall and Eric Glover-Williams behind him, there is quality depth that could pick up the pieces if Campbell misses time. If there’s one thing that Urban Meyer does better than anyone, it’s finding elite athletes to fill the H-back position.

Entering camp, the H-back spot is Campbell’s to lose, and Meyer has high hopes for the 6’1, 208-lb receiver. “We moved Parris inside a little bit, and he’s dynamic,” Meyer said. “He was a running back in high school. Big dude that can run and catch — he’s that guy right now.”

Previous: No. 10, Sean Nuernberger

The Ohio State Athletics Hall of Famer is back in Columbus.

The Ohio State men’s basketball program is getting all the help they can ahead of Chris Holtmann’s inaugural season in Columbus, Ohio. With a shortened offseason, player departures and late-signees, the Buckeyes will have another bit of help in the front office with the addition of James (Scoonie) Penn as Ohio State’s Director of Player Development.

“We are really excited about Scoonie being a part of our staff,” Holtmann said. “All of Buckeye Nation will know that he is one of the all-time great players and ambassadors of our program. His connection to past and present players is impressive and something I was looking for in this position. He is such an accomplished player and I know his passion for Ohio State basketball is as strong as ever.”

Penn played for Ohio State from 1998-2000, earning Big Ten Player of the Year in 1999 and second team All-America honors in 2000–his last season rocking the Scarlet and Gray. Penn was a captain for the Buckeyes and was named team co-MVP in both of his years in Columbus. Before coming to OSU, Penn transferred from Boston College.

In two seasons, Penn averaged 16.3 points and 4.1 rebounds, along with 284 assists. He ranks No. 46 all-time in scoring at Ohio State (1,076 points) and sits at No. 7 in program history for points scored in NCAA Tournament play (123 points).

“I want to thank Coach Holtmann for giving me this opportunity,” Penn said. “I am very excited to be a part of the basketball staff at Ohio State. I've always felt like coaching was a calling of mine and there isn’t a better place to have a chance to learn than the university that I attended and care so much about. It's going to be fun to learn from Coach Holtmann and the rest of the staff.”

Since his time at Ohio State, he was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the 2000 NBA Draft, but ended up playing his entire career — 11 seasons — in Europe (for teams in Italy, Croatia and Greece). Penn was recently voted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame with the 2013 class.

Helping football players with head trauma is just one reason the Smith & Ginn Sr. are opening a dispensary.

Troy Smith already blazed Michigan on the field, now, he wants to help you get blazed. As Tom Knox of Columbus Business First reported, the Heisman Trophy winner is partnering with his former high school coach Ted Ginn Sr. and former Cleveland Brown running back Eric Metcalf in an effort to launch a chain of marijuana dispensaries in the Cleveland area.

— Tom Knox (@TomKnoxBiz1st) July 11, 2017

Following the passage of a medical marijuana law in 2016, the state of Ohio will be selecting 24 business owners to receive licenses to open the dispensaries from 185 applicants. The deadline to submit applications was June 30, and the selection process is now underway with hearings taking place in Reynoldsburg.

Knox reports that a Level I license, which allows proprietors to have up to 25,000 square feet of marijuana growing space, is extremely expensive, beginning with a $20,000 application fee.

Ohio patients with one of 20 different conditions can qualify to use the drug. Knox said that Smith told him that head trauma sustained during his playing career was one of the factors that interested him in the industry.

He went on to say on Twitter, “Troy Smith says marijuana can help college football players and players after their careers end. Dispensaries would be in Cleveland area.”

Research has ramped up over the past year with regard to how THC and medical marijuana can help former athletes overcome head trauma from concussions along with pain management. Instead of enabling an opioid treatment plan, some are looking at the potential benefits of weed.

Bad losses: Not advised.

The 2006 and 2007 seasons’ national championship games damaged Ohio State’s national reputation not just because they were consecutive BCS Championship losses, but because Ohio State wasn’t particularly competitive in either contest.

The 2006 season loss to Florida (I don’t think I need to remind you of that score) was undoubtedly the worse of the two. It also kicked off a series of high-profile losses where Ohio State could seemingly dominate a down Big Ten, but fall short on the national stage. For instance, in 2008, Ohio State was beaten 35-3 at USC. Then Ohio State lost the Fiesta Bowl against Texas in a heartbreaker. 2009 saw another loss at home to Matt Barkley’s USC, then the infamous Purdue loss (which, while not a nationally-ranked game, still put a big dent in the average sports fan’s opinion of OSU). The Rose Bowl win over Oregon was cathartic.

Urban Meyer hasn’t had losses like those at Ohio State. Since the team’s undefeated 2012 season, Urban Meyer has lost just six times as Ohio State’s head coach. Until last year’s Playoff Semifinals 31-0 loss to Clemson, his worst loss was in the same year he picked up his third national championship — a 21-35 loss to Virginia Tech. Overall, Urban’s Ohio State losses include:

That single blowout loss, especially compared to the 2006-2011 streak of bad losses, made me think about Ohio State’s two peers over the last four years — Alabama and Clemson. Did either of those teams have bad losses that compared to the 0-31?

To compare them, I looked only at 2012-present to account for the Urban Meyer era at all three schools. During that time, these three teams accounted for four of the five national championships. I also considered a blowout loss to be by three or more touchdowns:

Alabama has only lost seven times in that time span, but didn’t have one worse than their 14-point loss to Oklahoma in the 2013 Sugar Bowl. Besides that loss (where it was very clear Saban’s team wasn’t fully interested), their worst loss was by a touchdown to the Buckeyes in the 2014 Playoff Semifinal. Their lack of blowout losses is almost as impressive as their three national titles.

Clemson’s most recent two bad losses were during Deshaun Watson’s freshman season. The first, against Georgia, was the first game of the season and Watson only had four passing attempts as senior Cole Stoudt was the starter. The second bad loss of Watson’s freshman season, against Georgia Tech, was in his return to play after breaking his hand — but then he strained his LCL and only attempted six passes. So essentially, after Deshaun Watson took over as the starter and got healthy (and became a two-year national title contender), Clemson didn’t have any bad losses either.

That’s what makes Ohio State’s bad loss so surprising. It was a critically important game, no one was especially injured, and it wasn’t a case of the wrong guy starting — the Buckeyes just suffered a very bad loss at more-or-less full strength.

2017 will see a lot of changes for these three teams. You could argue that Alabama should be more or less where they were last year, but replacing Lane Kiffin as offensive coordinator is still a pretty big unknown. Clemson enters the post-Watson era, and it’s unclear if they will remain as one of the top three (really, top two) teams in college football, or slide back down to that second tier. And Ohio State replaced 3⁄4 of its secondary and its offensive coordinators. All of that is to say that while Ohio State showed it had the lowest floor out of the elite teams over the last two years, there’s been enough offseason change that the hierarchy could (and hopefully will) reset for 2017.

The visitor list for Ohio State’s Friday Night Lights camp continues to grow with the addition of WR Jahan Dotson.

With the college football recruiting world entering a quiet-period yesterday, it would be understandable if Ohio State’s head football coach Urban Meyer decided to celebrate his 53rd birthday in peace and quiet. However, Meyer doesn’t work that way and it is that kind of attitude and approach that has led him to be recognized as one of the top coaches in the country. Therefore it should come as no surprise that plenty of recruiting news relating to the Buckeyes broke yesterday.

Possibly the biggest news was that the visitor list for Ohio State’s annual Friday Night Lights camp continued to grow when wide receiver Jahan Dotson (Nazareth, PA / Nazareth) added his name to the list.

The four-star wideout confirmed with Tom VanHaaren of ESPN that he would be in attendance for what has become Ohio State’s biggest recruiting event, set to take place later this month on July 21.

ESPN 300 WR Jahan Dotson, ranked No. 138 overall, said he'll be at Ohio State's FNL on July 21.

— Tom VanHaaren (@TomVH) July 10, 2017

Dotson is seen as one of the top WRs in the country, ranked as the No. 93 overall recruit in the 2018 recruiting class and the No. 19 WR, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The blue-chip prospect is a speedy WR and is electric with the ball in his hands, also being used to return kicks on special teams for his high school team. Standing at 5-foot-11 and 165-pounds, the Buckeyes would love to earn his commitment as the team has yet to add a true WR prospect in this years recruiting class.

Despite Ohio State once being viewed as the favorite to land Dotson, The Buckeyes have their hands full in securing a commitment from him. Big Ten foe Penn State is now seen as the runaway favorite to land the hometown kid with Alabama, Clemson and Tennessee also in the mix.

However, FNL creates a powerful atmosphere in The Shoe and Dotson wouldn’t be the first surprise commit to take place during the event. Last year’s camp saw the Buckeyes earn commitments from three prospects, including former five-star standout and current Buckeye DE Chase Young.

Updated 247Sports 2018 recruiting class rankings

Multiple Buckeye commits and targets saw their recruiting rankings change yesterday when 247Sports updated its 2018 recruiting class rankings. Surprisingly, multiple Buckeye commits saw a decline in their star rankings, so much so, the recruiting database no longer views any member of the Buckeyes’ class as a five-star prospect.

However, not every Buckeye commit and target received bad news from the updates. Buckeye running back commit, Master Teague (Murfreesboro, TN / Blackman) earned a fourth star and saw his ranking jump up an incredible 152 spots, now being seen as the No. 50 overall prospect in the class.

Buckeye tight end target Jeremy Ruckert (Lindenhurst, NY / Lindenhurst) also saw his ranking rise jumping to No. 11 from No. 35. Ruckert, who will be deciding between Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Wisconsin on July 17, also earned a fifth star coming off an impressive showing at The Nike Opening Finals earlier this month.

The full breakdown of Ohio State’s 2018 commits were as followed:

  • No. 18 four-star DT Taron Vincent (-8)
  • No. 33 four-star S Josh Proctor (-9)
  • No. 42 four-star S Jaiden Woodbey (-11)
  • No. 45 four-star APB Jaelen Gill (-4)
  • No. 50 four-star RB Master Teague (+152)

While one top Buckeyes target moved up in the rankings, another — Jackson Carman — did not. Carman dropped from No. 13 in the 247Sports rankings to No. 15, but like Woodbey, Gill and a few others had a good showing at The Opening finals in Oregon.

Basketball BOOOOOOOM!

The future is definitely starting to look bright for the Ohio State basketball program.

Just days after landing a pledge from newly classified 2017 wing Musa Jallow, Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes coaching staff have now landed a verbal commitment from class of 2018 shooting guard Torrence Watson.

A four-star rated prospect from Whitfield School in St. Louis, Missouri, committed to Ohio State over scholarship offers from Missouri, Marquette, Kansas State, and others.

Like Jallow, the 6-foot-4 Watson first got on Holtmann’s radar during his time at Butler.

The first class of 2018 commitment for the Buckeyes, Waston is currently considered the 23rd shooting guard, and 100th overall prospect in the senior class, according to the 247Sports Compositing Rankings.

Guards are a major priority for Ohio State recruiting, as Kam Williams, CJ Jackson, and Jallow are the only scholarship guards on the roster, with Williams departing after this season. Look for the Buckeyes to continue to target guards, especially point guards, in the 2018 and 2019 classes, as they look to grow that depth even more.

You can check out highlights of Watson in action below.
