Who Owes Who?

But seriously, I remember reading something about suicide statistics and I believe that the gist of it is that when most people are not able to commit suicide easily, they usually don't.

https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/means-matter/means-matter/survival/

reading through this a bit now. but i wonder if a slightly different possible theory is being missed here. when it comes to suicide i personally have always felt there are 2 core groups of persons who attempt suicide. people who legitimately want to die and people who are desperately seeking help but don't know how/where to get it. the first group is generally speaking pretty successful first time through. the second set never really wanted to die to begin with, rather they wanted help. in their "attempt" they either died, got the help/needed attention they were seeking, or realized how much this type of action wasn't going to help them get what they were seeking. so the likelihood of someone from group b repeating this type of action would almost certainly be extremely low. survivors from group a would likely be dictated by the severity of any injuries sustained in the attempt and or medical care provided as a result of the attempt.

The former teammates will take the court together one more time: #ThisOnesForThad

The first round for the Midwest and West regional brackets of The Basketball Tournament will tip-off Saturday, with some of Buckeye Nation’s favorite former players suiting for Team Scarlet & Gray at 3:15 p.m. EDT.

Despite a roller coaster of a year for Ohio State men’s basketball, things are starting to turn around as new head coach Chris Holtmann gets settled in and begins to bring in highly regarded recruits and staff. One of Holtmann’s most recent hires will be getting some early front office experience; alumnus Scoonie Penn is Ohio State’s newest Director of Player Development, but is also the General Manager for Team Scarlet & Gray.

“We think we’re a team that can win it. We look at the talent we've had here in the last 10 years or so, and we can match up with anybody. We want the state of Ohio supporting us. We're called Scarlet and Gray, but this team is a representation of the whole state."—Scoonie Penn

Penn will be joined by some of Thad Matta’s most notable alumni from 2011 to 2014, including Aaron Craft, Jon Diebler, David Lighty and Jared Sullinger. The team came together at the last minute, after Matta was relieved of his duties as head coach at Ohio State. Craft and co. were able to come up with the required numbers of votes to squeak into the tourney as a popular bid to honor their former coach.

TBT_Roster_with_Sully.jpg

What is The Basketball Tournament?

TBT is 5-on-5, single elimination annual basketball tournament, comprised of 64 teams — anyone 18 years or older can create a team -- competing for a winner-take-all prize of $2 million.

Teams are selected by region, with each of the four regions being comprised of 9 teams selected on popularity (number of online votes), 6 “at-large” selections (with at least 100 fans online), and one team that earns its place with a win in the TBT Jamboree (a set of games among 16 teams vying for 4 regional spots).

Game rules include: halves are 18 minutes, each team gets 4 timeouts per game, each player gets 6 fouls, the ball advances to half court on a dead ball timeout with less than one minute to play in the game, and international rules on basket interference (except on foul shots).

“To be able to play together again in something that honestly has a lot on the line I think is going to be a lot of fun,” Aaron Craft told Sports Illustrated. “It has an NCAA tournament feel, and that was always the best time of year when you have a good team.”

We're talking about practice

This group of Buckeyes didn’t find the success they did during and after their time at Ohio State by resting on their laurels. Despite being one of the most anticipated alumni teams to take the court for TBT, Thad Matta’s players visited Value City Arena several times in the week leading up to their Round 1 match-up to get in a little practice.

And some news that should make Buckeye Nation happy, the former standouts even took some time at the end of one of their practices to get some facetime with the young Bucks -- a group that could definitely use the wisdom from these legendary Ohio State names.

What’s next?

Should Scarlet & Gray come away with the — much anticipated — win, they will face-off in a second game Sunday.

Should they win that round, the Midwestern regional semi-final and final games will be played in Brooklyn, NY on July 22nd and 23rd; followed by the overall semi-finals in Baltimore, MD on August 1st, and the Championship Game August 3rd.

LGHL Ohio State has done an elite job of marketing Brutus Buckeye

Ohio State has done an elite job of marketing Brutus Buckeye

The anthropomorphic Buckeye has become one of the most marketable and profitable mascots in all of college sports.

“For his long service, Brutus has also been inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. Columbus Monthly reported in 2014 that Brutus appears at roughly 200 non-sporting events every year, and that he has three signature moves (the head bang, the Hulk Hogan, and the headstand while spelling O-H-I-O with his legs).”

Scot Chartrand on how Ohio State has made Brutus Buckeye profitable, Front Office Sports

Being marketable is one of the biggest things an athletic department can do if they want to make profit. For Ohio State, athletics—and their marketability— has been on the cutting edge. Even Brutus the Buckeye is marketed extremely well.

Front Office Sports wrote an article on Brutus’ marketability, and how OSU has created Brutus into this profitable component of the athletic department. Cutting through the clutter was one of the reasons Brutus has broken out into a mascot star in the college sports landscape; in fact, Brutus is in the mascot Hall of Fame.

Chartrand’s article reported that at a recent conference in Orlando, Pat Kindig, an assistant athletic director for digital, web and social at OSU, broke down that having a mascot presence on social media allows for flexibility in the marketing campaigns.

Recently, OSU has had campaigns that included buying ticket packages with the ability to collect commemorative Brutus bobble heads, as well as Brutus promoting OSU license plate purchases.

The article also mentioned another marketable mascot: Butler Blue. Between the two schools, they are leading the way in marketing mascots. It is definitely an interesting read if you want to see the marketing and communication ways of successful athletic departments.

“Do you like Michigan?” he was asked. Lawrence immediately pushed the “no” button. And then — just to make sure everyone had heard him the first time — he pushed it again.”

Jessica Wehrman on the recovery of Dublin, Ohio, native Zach Lawrence following a car crash, The Columbus Dispatch

Zach Lawrence suffered brain injuries in a car crash in the Republic of Georgia back in March. When he was brought back stateside in April, the Dublin, Ohio, native was taken to Ohio State for rehabilitation. There, he was given a button that allowed him to answer questions with either a “yes” or a “no.”

One question he was asked: Do you like Michigan? Lawrence pressed the “no” button, and then again for good measure.

In an article by Jessica Wehrman of The Columbus Dispatch, the recovery of the Ohio native is one that has taken time and patience—and there is still a long way to go. But to get to the point where Lawrence was able to press “no” when asked about his liking of the Michigan Wolverines, shows that progress is made when you have the time and patience to work through the problem.

When Lawrence arrived back in America on April 19, he was reportedly in a comatose state, and the chances of him waking up were not that good. However, he we are. Wehrman reported that with four months of progress, Lawrence has been able to keep his eyes open for extended amounts of time, and can hold a crayon to color when his children come to visit him.

There is still a long way for Zach to go, but at least he knows not to be in favor of the team up north. Here’s to a speedy recovery for Zach!

Chase Goodbread breaks down the 17 college football games this season with the most future NFL players. Ohio State shows up on the list three times.

-NFL.com

You know football is almost here when the top games to watch lists start seeing the light on the Internet. NFL.com broke out one of those lists, with this one featuring the 17 games of the season that will have the most future NFL players in the fold.

Ohio State found themselves on the list for three games. The first, showing up at No. 10 is The Game. At No. 7, the Buckeyes revenge game against Penn State, and the last of the trio of contest is Oklahoma at No. 4.

The top three games either include Alabama or Florida State—or both! The No. 1 game determined by Chase Goodbread to have the most NFL future power is the highly anticipated Crimson Tide-Seminoles contest on Sept. 2. The No. 2 game is Bama-LSU, and No. 3 is FSU-Clemson.

Only time will tell if these games actually hold the future professional stars as advertised, but we all know one thing: these will be some of the best games of the whole season.
