Quite a few former Ohio State standouts could be on their way out of the pros.

Every player in the NFL has to come to grips with their football mortality at some point.

Former Ohio State Buckeyes are no different.

The Scarlet and Gray’s presence in the pros has never been greater, but that doesn’t mean they’re meant to last. According to The Wall Street Journal, the average length of an NFL career is now less than three years.

With more than a handful of OSU alumni having reached a career crossroads, it might not be long before their time in the league is over.

Is it curtains for these former Buckeyes? Let’s take a look.

Tyvis Powell

An undrafted free agent in 2015, Tyvis Powell has been with three teams as a pro.

Powell’s only ever made one official 53-man roster and is still in search of a long-term home in the NFL. While it’s taken the ball-hawking safety some time to adjust, it seems like his patience is finally paying off.

He’s enjoying a solid training camp with the Indianapolis Colts and has been making plays at both safety and cornerback.

Should Powell make the final cut, he’ll join former OSU standouts Johnathan Hankins, John Simon, Jack Mewhort, and rookie Malik Hooker.

And who wouldn’t love to see that? You go, Tyvis.

Doran Grant

He might’ve been selected in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, but Doran Grant hasn’t come close to meeting those expectations.

Like Powell, Grant has had a difficult time transitioning to the next level and has made one lone final roster. He bounced around a couple practice squads before landing with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

— SteelCityUnderground (@steelcityundrgr) August 14, 2016

The 24-year-old cornerback has turned heads in training camp, though, and has noticeably improved in coverage.

Grant needs to consistently prove himself as a reliable cover man if he wants to continue his NFL career.

Michael Bennett

If you thought Michael Bennett was going be a star in the pros, you’re not alone.

Bennett was a dominant force in the trenches for the Buckeyes and has looked anything but in the league.

He probably won’t ever duplicate his collegiate production. His smaller size and lack of a three-down skillset make him an ideal career backup . Considering the depth of the Jaguars defensive line, Bennett should fit in nicely behind Malik Jackson and Sheldon Day.

I’m not sure how much longer he has left in the NFL. Although Bennett has reportedly been impressive in training camp, he’ll really have to battle every year to make an active roster.

No player can sustain that.

Jeff Heuerman

Denver Broncos President of Football Operations and general manager John Elway said it best when describing how important this year is to Jeff Heuerman.

“This is the year,” Elway said via Broncos PR. “Jeff had a good year. We’re waiting for him to take that big step because we drafted him third round a couple years ago, and obviously he tore the ACL in minicamp the first year. We’re looking at this year as Jeff’s coming out year. Like I said, he had a good spring. Hopefully he makes that big jump.”

The ACL injury the former Buckeye tight end was dealt with as a rookie clearly set him back, but it sounds like he’s turning a corner.

Heuerman was a quietly athletic, reliable pass-catcher at OSU and it’ll take more of the same if he is to remain a Bronco, let alone a pro football player.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Jalin Marshall

Coming off a mediocre rookie campaign, Jalin Marshall was already was on thin ice with the New York Jets.

A four-game suspension for PED use to start the 2017 season made things even worse.

Marshall, who went undrafted, showed flashes in Year 1 for the Jets. As the team’s fourth wideout in rotation and return specialist, he compiled 748 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.

— tOSURecruiting (@tOSURecruiting) January 1, 2017

New York is longing for guys to step up at receiver, so it’s entirely possible for Marshall to become a legit contributor on a talent-stricken offense.

But I can say with full confidence that he would’ve been cut had the Jets’ top wideout Quincy Enunwa not suffered a season-ending neck injury this week.

What a difference another year in school could’ve made.

Curtis Grant

Remember this guy?

An unsung leader of OSU’s national championship run in 2015, Curtis Grant has yet to establish any footing in the NFL. He’s been with five different teams and is now a member of the New York Giants, hoping to appear in his first ever regular season game in 2017.

Grant is a linebacker by trade, but his only path to making the Giants active roster is through special teams.

It’s crowded, but the Buckeyes are in the fight against the Tar Heels, Jayhawks, and Hoosiers for Darius Days.

On Monday, the story broke that former Ohio State basketball commit and 2018 Ohio star Justin Ahrens included the Buckeyes in his list of top schools. Yesterday, more good news came to Chris Holtmann's program, as OSU made the cut for four-star 2018 power forward Darius Days.

pic.twitter.com/JlXtNnnRDC

— Almighty-Double_00 (@Almighty_Doubl3) August 8, 2017

Days, who has shined at The Rock School in Gainesville, Fla., has collected over 26 offers from some of the top schools in the country. When Days trimmed his list down to 11, some of those top schools still were in the running, including defending national champions North Carolina.

Kansas, Xavier, and Indiana are just a few of the other schools that Ohio State has to compete against for Days’ commitment. Where Days will end up is shaping up to be a mystery. The 247Sports Crystal Ball had nine entries for Days, and a majority of the votes went with Days choosing the hometown Florida Gators. However, the Gators are not in the final group of schools to win his services.

LSU holds the second highest amount of predictions on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for Days, but those predictions were filed before Roy Williams and his Tar Heels made the offer to the star PF on Aug. 5.

Right now, OSU has only one commitment in the 2018 recruiting class in four-star shooting guard Torrence Watson. Will Days be joining Watson in OSU’s 2018 class? Time will tell.

2019 Ohio football prospect making another visit to OSU?

Pivoting to the gridiron, Ohio State football is taking the necessary steps to creating a relationship with a wide receiving prospect. 2019 athlete Mershawn Rice (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) talked to 247Sports and Ohio State recruiting guru Bill Kurelic about making another visit—a fourth.

Already, Rice has been to two OSU camps: one on June 13, and Friday Night Lights. However, Rice doesn’t hold an offer from Urban Meyer and the Scarlet and Gray; Rice does, however, hold scholarships from five programs. Two Ohio schools, Toledo and Cincinnati, have made offers to Rice, in addition to Kentucky, Syracuse, and Pittsburgh. Rice doesn’t have a recruiting grade yet, but Ohio State isn’t the college football force to show interest in the Reynoldsburg native.

In October 2016, Rice made an unofficial visit to Notre Dame, according to an entry in his 247Sports profile. Additionally, Rice’s 247Sports profile only has two entries for school camps attended—with both being at Ohio State.

If the Buckeyes were making a play for Rice, the roots to a great relationship have been established. He has made contact with OSU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and wide receivers coach Zach Smith, according to Kurelic. If Rice schedules a fourth visit, we'll keep you posted.

The young wide receivers share some similarities and can learn from each other.

“It's not that you'd better be able to make plays or you shouldn't be here. It's more like, ‘Can you make plays consistently, and can you -- when tired -- make plays?’ If you're fresh and you can make a play, cool, we recruited you and I hope so. It's not that impressive.”

- Zach Smith via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

No matter which team you root for in college football, each season there’s always a couple of incoming freshman that people get excited about. For Ohio State, some of the young receivers in previous seasons have been a lot of the focus. Last season, Austin Mack made quite a bit of noise in spring and fall camp only to not make much of an impact during the season. Now, another freshman receiver coming in, Jaylen Harris, is being praised by the coaching staff as someone who has tremendous talent and could make a difference as early as this season. But what happened to Mack?

Simply put, Mack knew he wasn’t ready. The article goes more in depth, but if you read it, it seems like Harris could potentially learn from a player like Mack who had just as much hype coming out of camp despite not actually being prepared for a starting spot. Still, Mack is now ready to contribute and will look to help replace some of the talent gone from the wide receiving core this season. Whether Harris follows the same path as Mack last season remains to be seen, there’s still several more weeks of fall camp to be played out before the season opener against Indiana.

“He is the most twitched-up dude I have ever played against. And I played against Alabama when I was 20 years old, and those are some monsters down there. He is the most twitched-up dude, and watching him play this year compared to last year, last year he was just kind of running around being a young guy, hey let's flip my hips and go hit somebody. Now he's able to read an offensive lineman and read what an offense is doing and he's so explosive, if you are a half-step behind, he beats you every time.”

- Billy Price via Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

If you’re looking for a player to claim they’re going to have a breakout year, a good bet would be Ohio State defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones. Having played defensive end for the majority of his high school career, he has the speed of an end with the size of a tackle and could end up being a nightmare for opposing offensive lines. Just ask current Buckeye center Billy Price, who had possibly the highest praise for the defensive tackle, as seen above. Price compares Jones to players from Alabama and still considers him the most ‘twitched up dude’ that he’s faced off against. Price is on a track to following in the footsteps of Pat Elflein who switched positions to center to help his draft stock and is looking to have similar success.

Even Jamarco Jones got in on the praise of Dre’Mont Jones, saying he reminded him of former defensive tackle Adolphus Washington, but much quicker. It seems like the plan of moving Jones to defensive tackle is starting to work out as the offensive linemen are having trouble keeping him at bay. And with the recent comments from Greg Schiano about Ohio State’s defensive line, it’s hard to contain the excitement for this group.

“[Heisman odds] J.T. Barrett 10-1, Mike Weber 50-1”

- Ben Fawkes, ESPN

The latest batch of Heisman Trophy odds have been released by Westgate Las Vegas Superbook, and it features two members of Ohio State on the list. Senior quarterback J.T. Barrett has the fourth-best odds in the country to win the award, at 10-1. The other Buckeye was running back Mike Weber who currently sits at 50-1 odds which is good for 18th-best in the nation. Among running backs, Weber is sixth in the odds to win.

The last time Barrett was involved in Heisman talks was his freshman year in 2014 when he took over for the injured Braxton Miller and finished fifth in the voting that season. The last member of Ohio State to win the award came in 2006, when quarterback Troy Smith took home the hardware on his way to a national championship appearance.

Another sportsbook, Bovada, released their Heisman odds, as well as national champion odds. You can read those odds here.

Ohio State researchers develop regenerative medicine breakthrough
Technology has potential for use in repairing organs, blood vessels and nerve cells

https://news.osu.edu/news/2017/08/07/regenerative-med-study/

Researchers at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Ohio State’s College of Engineering have developed a new technology, Tissue Nanotransfection (TNT), that can generate any cell type of interest for treatment within the patient’s own body. This technology may be used to repair injured tissue or restore function of aging tissue, including organs, blood vessels and nerve cells.

Results of the regenerative medicine study published today in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

“By using our novel nanochip technology, injured or compromised organs can be replaced. We have shown that skin is a fertile land where we can grow the elements of any organ that is declining,” said Dr. Chandan Sen, director of Ohio State’s Center for Regenerative Medicine & Cell Based Therapies, who co-led the study with L. James Lee, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering with Ohio State’s College of Engineering in collaboration with Ohio State’s Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center.

Researchers studied mice and pigs in these experiments. In the study, researchers were able to reprogram skin cells to become vascular cells in badly injured legs that lacked blood flow. Within one week, active blood vessels appeared in the injured leg, and by the second week, the leg was saved. In lab tests, this technology was also shown to reprogram skin cells in the live body into nerve cells that were injected into brain-injured mice to help them recover from stroke.

“This is difficult to imagine, but it is achievable, successfully working about 98 percent of the time. With this technology, we can convert skin cells into elements of any organ with just one touch. This process only takes less than a second and is non-invasive, and then you're off. The chip does not stay with you, and the reprogramming of the cell starts. Our technology keeps the cells in the body under immune surveillance, so immune suppression is not necessary,” said Sen, who also is executive director of Ohio State’s Comprehensive Wound Center.

TNT technology has two major components: First is a nanotechnology-based chip designed to deliver cargo to adult cells in the live body. Second is the design of specific biological cargo for cell conversion. This cargo, when delivered using the chip, converts an adult cell from one type to another, said first author Daniel Gallego-Perez, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering and general surgery who also was a postdoctoral researcher in both Sen’s and Lee’s laboratories.

TNT doesn’t require any laboratory-based procedures and may be implemented at the point of care. The procedure is also non-invasive. The cargo is delivered by zapping the device with a small electrical charge that’s barely felt by the patient.

“The concept is very simple,” Lee said. “As a matter of fact, we were even surprised how it worked so well. In my lab, we have ongoing research trying to understand the mechanism and do even better. So, this is the beginning, more to come.”

Researchers plan to start clinical trials next year to test this technology in humans, Sen said.

Funding for this research was provided by Ohio State’s Center for Regenerative Medicine and Cell-Based Therapies, Ohio State’s Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center and Leslie and Abigail Wexner.
