The Colts defense just got a whole lot more exciting.

“Head coach Chuck Pagano should be able to rely on free agent defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins and outside linebacker Jabaal Sheard to play major snaps, and can probably slot in first-round pick Malik Hooker at free safety.”

-Danny Kelly, The Ringer

The Indianapolis Colts saw most of their heavy-snap count defenders either retire or head to another team this offseason. As Kelly mentions in his breakdown of the most noteworthy training camp battles, the Colts needed to replace over half of their defensive snaps (5,100-of-11,834) -- they accomplished this, in part, by bringing in all the Buckeyes that they could.

Jack Mewhort is the sole OSU alum returning to the team, with offseason additions, including Johnathan Hankins, John Simon, Tyvis Powell and rookie Malik Hooker. With five former Ohio State stars on the Colts defense, it may currently seem a bit curious, but the unit could be among the best in the league before too long.

The Silver Bullets are back, and considering the Colts defense ranked No. 27 in the NFL last season, there’s nowhere to go but up for a group that has more history together than most at that level.

“In his rookie season, Thomas went on to lead the team and set rookie franchise records with 92 catches for 1,137 yards receiving and nine touchdowns.”

-Louis Puissegur IV, via the New Orleans Saints

He didn’t earn post-season honors following his rookie year, but former Ohio State wideout Michael Thomas became one of the league’s up and comers.

Thomas finished his inaugural season in the league having played in all but one of the Saints’ games, and setting franchise records along the way. In addition to being 1-for-1 in 1,000-plus yard seasons, he also proved that he can be a deep threat snagging a first down on 62 of his 92 receptions.

“I think one of his great strengths is his ability to work and focus. He truly loves playing and so, gamedays are that much more important. He’s very competitive,” Saints head coach Sean Payton said, according to the team site. “I think he’s tough when he catches the ball in space for any defender.”

Thomas will have another Buckeye on offense with the offseason addition of receiver Ted Ginn Jr, combined with the talent of Willie Snead IV, the Saints could have one of the better receiving corps in the NFL.

“At 21 years old, the odometer reading is still relatively low even if he did carry the ball a total of 559 times over his last two seasons at Ohio State.”

-Tim McManus on Ezekiel Elliott’s workload, ESPN

Running backs take a notorious workload early on in their NFL careers, with team’s looking to add the next three-down back whenever possible. The problem with three-down backs is the punishment that their bodies face week-after-week, which turns out to affect their production sooner, rather than later.

Ezekiel Elliott was the only running back in the NFL during the 2016 season to net over 300 carries (322). The 300-carry back is becoming less and less popular with teams. Between 2001-10, there were 8.5 players per season on average taking on that kind of load. In the six years since, the average is now just two players a year coming away with that number of carries.

One reason teams have been pivoting toward a running-back-by-committee approach, is the significant drop-off in production that was seen by 300-carry backs. As detailed in McManus’ ESPN piece, nine of the 10 players in the past five years to have a 300-carry season, saw their production reduced by an average of 739 yards the next season. The one exception is Marshawn Lynch — but, he’s Beast Mode, and doesn’t count.

Elliott could get close to another 300-carry season in 2017, but it will depend on if the league brings down any form of punishment for his off-field behavior. Should that happen, he’ll have more to worry about than just his number of snaps or carries, but rather the big hit that his wallet will take in the process.

Any suspension by the Cowboys or NFL will void $8,156,274 of salary guarantees in Ezekiel Elliott's 2017 through 2019 contract years.

And, they might not be in the league just yet, but Nick Bosa and Tracy Sprinkle are spending time interning with NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell this summer.

A win here, and the Scarlet & Gray are in the semifinals.

The Basketball Tournament is starting to heat up, as we head into the regional final portion of the bracket. Still in the running for the $2 million prize: Scarlet & Gray, a team comprised mostly of former Ohio State basketball stars.

This collection of past Buckeye talent has shined through The Basketball Tournament, especially in Saturday’s contest against Always A Brave, a team built around former standouts from Bradley University. In their 81-72 victory, Scarlet & Gray had breakout performances from Jared Sullinger and Aaron Craft. Both Buckeyes scored 21 points and collected 9 rebounds apiece, propelling the Scarlet & Gray to the next round.

Here are those highlights from the Scarlet & Gray’s Super 16 win:

Ohio State’s new Director of Player Development Scoonie Penn is the GM of this squad, and a win in the Midwest Region Final would send Scarlet & Gray to the Semifinals in Baltimore, Md. on Aug. 1.

Who is Team Scarlet & Gray playing against for the Midwest Region crown?

This regional final will be a showdown between the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded teams. Scarlet & Gray comes in as the region’s No. 2 seed, and the Golden Eagles come in as the region’s No. 1 seed.

Team Golden Eagles is comprised of Marquette University alums, and they have been a force in the tournament so far. In Round 1 of the tournament, the Golden Eagles knocked off Midwest Dream Squad, 103-89. In Round 2, the team comprised of Saint Louis University alums fell to the Golden Eagles, as did Purple and Black (the Kansas State alum team) in the Super 16.

In their Super 16 win, the Golden Eagles had four players reach double-digit scoring outputs. Forward Davante Gardner led the squad in both points and rebounding, picking up 20 points and 9 rebounds. As a team, the Golden Eagles secured 9 steals, and shot 45.8 percent from the field.

If you want to see what Team Scarlet & Gray is going up against, here’s the highlight clip of Team Golden Eagles’ Super 16 victory:

What’s next?

If Scarlet & Gray pull off the upset, then they would move on to the semifinals in Baltimore on Aug. 1. The semifinal contests will be aired on ESPN.

One semifinal will start at 7 p.m. and the other semifinal will tip-off at 9 p.m. The winners from those games will advance to the championship game—with the $2 million dollar prize on the line. The championship game will be in Baltimore and will take place on Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. Like the semifinals, ESPN will be the station that broadcasts the game.

SG Connor Fulton (Official Thread)

He's listed at 6-2 and at 6-4; I'm guessing more like 6-2, since it seems like he would have some offers with a little height. The only DI offer I can find listed from the links is North Dakota. Semi-decent ball-handler and lots of three-balls in the clip. I hope he turns into a solid role-player at Ohio State, probably not going to do much this year other than in an emergency.

Jared Sullinger turns in an impressive effort in front of NBA scouts.

As of Saturday, The Basketball Tournament’s team Scarlet & Gray is now halfway to claiming a $2 million prize, as they defeated Always a Brave, 81-72.

The Basketball Tournament might not have the “best” players in the world, but that hasn’t made the action any less enjoyable. In the Ohio State alumni’s Super 16 matchup against a formidable team of Bradly alums, team Scarlet & Gray benefited from an up-tempo, free-flowing game not hampered by constant whistles or endless trips to the free-throw line.

In the early going, newly signed AS Monaco guard Aaron Craft led the way, showing that he still has the ability to contribute in all facets of the game. After hitting a corner three, he also drove to the rim and finished with an underhanded scoop. Then on defense, he dove over an Always a Brave player to pick up a turnover before being fouled.

— TBT (@thetournament) July 22, 2017

Also contributing early was current Turkish League star Jon Diebler. While in the early going we didn’t see one of his patented threes, he was consistently connecting on deep-twos.

In the second half, after a driving layup to give the Scarlet & Gray a 54-43 lead, Diebler seemed to sprain his right ankle. He did not return to the game, and his status for Sunday’s game is not known.

— TBT (@thetournament) July 22, 2017

As the first half progressed, Team Scarlet & Gray used incredibly balanced scoring to maintain a lead over the Bradley alums, in part because of the deep shooting stroke of an unlikely source. On back-to-back possessions, Jared Sullinger hit a two from just inside the arc, and then a three from way downtown.

With NBA scouts in the building, the free agent ended the first half with 11 points, six rebounds, and two assists.

.@Jared_Sully0's got the RANGE: he's 2-of-3 from three point land! @ScarletGrayTBT leads 32-26 at the 3:21 timeout. #TBT2017 #Super16 pic.twitter.com/lcVJhMj3aP

— TBT (@thetournament) July 22, 2017

In the first half, Scarlet & Gray hit 10 of their 18 shots from inside the arc, and were an impressive 5-9 from downtown. Conversely, Always a Brave was 8-13 from two, but only 2-14 for distance. As was a problem in their first two games, the former Buckeyes were hampered by turnovers, committing nine in the first half. The Bradley crew was buoyed in the first 18 minutes by 11 points from their bench.

As the second half opened, Always a Brave raced out to cut the S&G lead to just 40-38, helped in part by an oddly-called technical foul on Craft. However, from that point, the Buckeye alums rebounded to go on an eight-point run to take a 48-38 lead into a timeout.

Despite the fact that the team was only recently, officially put together, many members of the Scarlet & Gray benefit from having already played together. Six of the team’s players were significant contributors to OSU’s great 2010-2011 squad. That familiarity leads to an understanding on the floor that a lot of the other teams just don’t have the opportunity to have.

— TBT (@thetournament) July 22, 2017

Halfway through the second half, Always a Brave’s Jerome Randle went on a one-man run, scoring nine-straight points to bring the score to 60-54 in favor of the former Buckeyes with 7:30 left in the game. The run gave Randle 16 points at that point.

However, coming out of a break, William Buford hit a corner three to move the S&G advantage back up to nine points. On the very next offensive possession, Sullinger completed an old-fashioned three-point play to extend the advantage to 66-54.

After @OnceABrave cut the lead to 6, @ScarletGrayTBT have gone on an 11-0 run to push the lead to 71-54. Under 5 to play. #TBT2017 pic.twitter.com/FkUPH24Pew

— TBT (@thetournament) July 22, 2017

The Bradley alums continued to apply pressure to the Scarlet & Gray, thanks to an 11-2 run that cut the gap to 73-67, before Craft hit a pair of free-throws, aided by a lane violation.

Always a Brave’s Tony Bennett, Randle’s cousin, immediately responded, hitting a three of his own to keep the game at two possessions as it moved under two minutes. However, it was not enough to ultimately close the gap on the Scarlet & Gray.

The Ohio State alums will play in the Regional Finals tomorrow at 12:00pm ET on the ESPN family of networks. Scarlet & Gray will face either the No. 1 seeded Marquette alums, Golden Eagles or Kansas State’s No. 4 Purple and Black Attack.

The winner of that game will advance to Baltimore next weekend for TBT’s semifinals.

The St. Louis native can get buckets for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State has been lacking in players that can get buckets. It’s essentially the reason the team has fallen off in recent years.

Enter future Buckeye, four-star shooting guard Torrence Watson.

A St. Louis native, Watson is a true scorer and averaged nearly 29 points per game for the Whitfield Warriors as a junior. He’s rated as the No. 100 overall prospect in the 2018 class and is the No. 23-ranked shooting guard.

Watson decided to follow coach Chris Holtmann to Columbus when he left Butler, and likely wouldn’t have committed to OSU had it not been for Holtmann. In preparation for his senior season, Watson spoke with us about his innate scoring ability, Holtmann’s influence, and more.

(Note: Remarks lightly edited for clarity.)

Land-Grant Holy Land: You’re known as a scorer and averaged almost 29 points per game, earning All-Metro honors. How would you describe your game?

Torrence Watson: I can score the ball, whether than means getting to the basket, pulling up for a jump shot, or shooting from long range. I bring versatility and am able to score on all three levels.

LGHL: You can get buckets, but your handles are another one of your strengths. Would you be comfortable playing point guard at OSU?

Watson: Yes, I definitely would be. My last high school season, I took on a more dominant role handling the ball. It wouldn’t be much of a problem at OSU. In high school and AAU, I moved to the three a lot. I’m comfortable playing the one, two and three.

LGHL: You’re the No. 23-ranked shooting guard in the nation and had quite a few offers before deciding on OSU. Did you have a tough time making a final decision?

Watson: I think everything was fairly enjoyable. It’s just a blessing to have schools and coaches want you, call you, text your phone all of the time. At the same time, towards the end, it definitely became a hard decision. I had built so many great relationships with so many coaches and programs, so it was hard to choose just one.

LGHL: Coach Holtmann was heavily involved in your recruitment while he was at Butler, and that continued when he came to OSU. How did his involvement impact your commitment?

Watson: He was very heavily involved. Ever since Butler, I think he’s been recruiting me for about two years now. Him and coach [Mike] Schrage have been dedicated to recruiting me and building a relationship with me. So I definitely felt comfortable choosing OSU.

LGHL: How’s your relationship with the Buckeyes coaching staff?

Watson: We have a great relationship. I’ve talked with Coach Holtmann and Coach Schrage just about everyday for the past two weeks. Before my commitment, I’d talk with them every other day. Our relationship is really strong. I also talk weekly with some of the assistants.

LGHL: You made a few visits to OSU and they were enough to sell you on the school and the basketball program. What were those visits like?

Watson: My first visit, we went to a football game. Any 17-year-old kid that goes to an OSU football game is going to love it. My second visit, I really got to see the school and meet the athletic director, all the coaches, managers and players. It just felt like the place that I should be.

LGHL: I spoke with Musa Jallow recently and he decided to reclassify for the 2017 class. Is that something you’ve thought about doing?

Watson: That’s not something I’ve thought about. In high school, we went to the Final Four the past two years and haven’t won yet, so I was planning on this being the year.

LGHL: What does your preparation schedule look like as you head into your final year in high school?

Watson: One thing I’ve been working on a lot is making my three-point shot more consistent. I’m building my body up right now and I’m also working on my footwork.

LGHL: Top 3 albums of the year?

Watson: I’m a really big Lil Yachty fan, so his latest album, Teenage Emotions. Then I’d probably go with Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv is Rage 2 and Migos’ Culture. Oh, and “XO TOUR Llif3,” I think it’s the greatest song ever made. It’s by Uzi.

Craft, Sullinger, and Diebler continue quest for $2 million.

Now it’s starting to get serious for the band of former Ohio State basketball players coming together to compete in the fourth annual The Basketball Tournament. This 64-team bracket features squads consisting of former college and NBA players, as well as players currently continuing their professional careers overseas. The winner-take-all tourney has a grand prize of $2 million dollars, and the former Buckeyes are just four wins away from taking it home.

While the team is not made up exclusively of Ohio State alums, they have branded their run in TBT with the hashtag #ThisOnesForThad, in honor of recently fired OSU head coach Thad Matta.

Ohio State’s new Director of Player Development Scoonie Penn is serving as the team’s GM, and his squad includes former Ohio State standouts, Aaron Craft, Jared Sullinger, David Lighty, Jon Diebler, Evan Ravenel, William Buford, and Dallas Lauderdale.

First Weekend Recap

During the first weekend of this unique tournament, the former Buckeyes eliminated The Region, a team based in Chicago, by a score of 78-63. Then in Round 2, they knocked off former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee players the Banner Boys 72-58.

In the first game, the squad was led by Sullinger, who turned in an 18 point, 11 rebound double-double. Also contributing were Ravenel and Lighty with 13, and Craft with 10.

The two biggest weak spots for the Scarlet & Gray in the opening round were a disappointing 5-20 showing behind the arc and their inability to hold onto the ball, committing 13 turnovers. Fortunately for the former Buckeyes, one of those concerns was remedied the following day.

Against the Banner Boys, Diebler, one of OSU’s all-time great deep threats, took over, connecting on five of his eight attempts from distance. His 21 points were a game high. Buford also had a nice game turning in 14 points in just 16 minutes of action.

Craft also turned in a very Craftian performance, especially considering that all games are played with two 18-minute halves, going for seven points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

Despite the improvement from three-point land, the Scarlet & Gray still committed 12 turnovers in Round 2. As they get deeper in the tournament, and face more formidable opponents, the ability of this team, who has still enjoyed minimal playing and practice time together, to maintain possession will be important.

Who is Team Scarlet & Gray playing?

As the former Buckeyes move into the regional semifinals, they will face off against No. 6 Always a Brave, a team primarily comprised of former Bradley University players. In their first two games, the Braves were led by guard Jerome Randle, who put up 21 points in the team’s 92-81 victory over the Fort Wayne Champs.

While Craft will need to lock down Randle, Jared Sullinger and the rest of the Scarlet & Gray front-court will have their hands full with former Celtic and Raptor Patrick O’Bryant and 35-year-old Bradley alum Marcellus Sommerville.

Sommerville averaged 19 points per game in TBT’s opening two rounds, while O’Bryant turned in 7.5. Both big men accounted for 4.5 rebounds per game.

What’s next?

If Team Scarlet & Gray is able to overcome the sixth-seeded Always a Brave team, they would next take to the court against either the top-seeded Golden Eagles (a team of Marquette alums) or the No. 4 Purple and Black Attack (Kansas State alumni).

The regional finals will take place Sunday on the ESPN family of networks with the winner advancing to the tournament’s semifinal round in Baltimore next weekend, with a top $2 million prize just two victories away.

Also, 13 different Buckeyes show up on preseason award watchlists.

“The poll also had voters break down how teams would finish in their respective divisions. Ohio State received 34 of the 38 first-place votes in the East, while Wisconsin had 31 first-place votes in the West.”

Stephen Pianovich breaks down the cleveland.com media poll that determined who the favorite was to win the Big Ten | Landof10.com

Since Urban Meyer took over as head coach of the OSU football team, the Buckeyes have been a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten. This season, it seems that the trend will continue, as cleveland.com conducted a poll amongst media members to find out who would be the favorites to win the conference.

With 34 of the 38 first-place votes, Ohio State was selected by the media to be the eventual winners of the East Division of the Big Ten Conference; for the West Division, Wisconsin received 31 of the first-place votes.

The poll also favored the Buckeyes against the Badgers in the Big Ten Championship Game.

While OSU was the runaway favorite in the East Division, two other programs received first-place votes. Penn State received seven first-place votes; Michigan also received one vote for first-place in the East. On the other side of the table, Northwestern received five votes for first-place in the West Division. The other team to receive votes at the top of the West was Nebraska. While the Cornhuskers only had two votes for first, it’s still one more vote than what Michigan had in the East.

“Three Ohio State Buckeyes and all graduates of the university...have been named to Walter Camp player of the year watch list for 2017.”

Ohio State spokesperson

Award watchlist season is well underway. Again, Ohio State football is dominating the lists on both the offensive and defensive sides. In a press release by an OSU spokesperson, three Buckeyes (J.T. Barrett, Billy Price and Tyquan Lewis) were named to the preseason list for the Walter Camp player of the year. This award is the fourth oldest award in college football, and is one of the most prestigious awards as well.

Last season, Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson took home the award. The last Buckeye to win the award was Troy Smith in 2006. Both Jackson and Smith won the Heisman Trophy in addition to the Walter Camp player of the year award.

Thirteen Buckeyes show up on preseason watchlists. Below is a table that shows each award and the Scarlet and Gray representative in the running:

There is still time for more Buckeyes to be named to watchlists. We’ll keep you posted when that information breaks.

“With Ohio State competing with Miami for the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for the 2018 cycle, there promises to be plenty of talent on display.”

The time has come for Ohio State’s epic Friday Night Lights football camp. Some of the top talent on the high school circuit will descend upon Columbus, Ohio, and will show why they are considered one of the best athletes on the high school gridiron.

In the past, Buckeye targets have made a commitment at the event, so don’t be surprised if history repeats itself over the weekend. If a commitment does end up happening in Columbus, we’ll have you covered.

If you want to know who all is making the trek to Ohio Stadium, we’ve compiled a list in our Friday Night Lights primer.
