MotS&G Preview: #7 Oklahoma vs #2 Ohio State

Preview: #7 Oklahoma vs #2 Ohio State

With the first week of the young CFB season behind us, we look forward to another contest that has once again garnered another College Gameday appearance. The featured matchup will place two Top 10 teams against each other, and with two big-time and experienced leaders at the Quarterback position, there will be no shortage of big plays and drama.

What To Watch For:

J.T. Barrett versus Baker Mayfield:

download-10.jpg

In a game filled with great matchups, Barrett versus Mayfield takes the front seat in this contest. Mayfield led the offense to an impressive win over UTEP, while Barrett took some time to get his offense going. Although it was not entirely his fault, the WR’s failed to break away from the opposing DB’s.

Mayfield looked sharp against inferior and outclassed competition. He finished 19 for 20 for 329 yards and 3 scores, in a 56-7 drubbing of UTEP. This week he will face a newly pieced together set of DB’s and he will be looking to test them early and often with his crop of receivers.

Barrett was efficient during his showing and he showed some improvement balancing the running and passing. He finished with 4 total TD’s and 365 yards, 301 of which were through the air and he also had 64 on the ground. This balance was needed and he will need to stay focused and sharp against a mostly experienced secondary that has three Seniors to lean on.

This game will most likely fall on the shoulders of both men with ball security, balance and turnovers will be the deciding factor. There will be no shortage of big plays and offensive fireworks, this is what makes this so exciting.

Trench Wars, Best D-Line versus Best O-Line:

images-1-19.jpg

In what is almost another given, the battle in the trenches between Oklahoma and Ohio State is another key matchup to watch in this battle of two Top 10 teams.

Oklahoma has one of the best Offensive Lines in the nation led by LT Orlando Brown and they average out to about 304.4 lbs of humanity tasked to protect Mayfield.

On the other side of the line will be one of the best Defensive Lines in the nation led by Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis. Behind them, the depth at Ohio State, particularly on the Defensive Line, they are two or three deep at each position.

This matchup will determine the success of either team. The Sooner line is talented and will be a major test for the Buckeyes line.

Buckeye DB’s versus Sooner WR’s:

download-2-2.jpg
I remember people saying that Ohio State will not face another crop of big, physical receivers again this season. Guess what? They were wrong. The Sooners top 3 receivers are 6’3″, 6’5″ and 6’5″. Ceedee Lamb, Mark

The Sooners top 3 receivers are 6’3″, 6’5″ and 6’5″. Ceedee Lamb, Mark Andrews, and Jeffery Mead are massive, with Andrews, a former Buckeye target being the heaviest at 253 lbs. Kendall Sheffield, Damon Arnette, and Denzel Ward need to be sharp. Jordan Fuller and Damon Webb need to stay disciplined as well.

Kendall Sheffield, Damon Arnette, and Denzel Ward need to be sharp. Jordan Fuller and Damon Webb need to stay disciplined as well.

This could be another shootout, but can the Buckeye secondary cover and force a few turnovers for the defense? Can the Sooner Wideouts out-muscle their smaller opponents?

Sooner Front 7 versus Dobbins/Weber:

True Freshman J.K. Dobbins received his first start and he surely did not disappoint. He finished the game with 29 carries for 181 yards and 2 catches for 24 yards. This week he will share the load with Mike Weber.

Together they face a stout front 7 led by 3 seniors. They will be tasked to stop the ground game and get to the QB. It won’t be easy, but they gave them fits a season ago, so it’ll be interesting.

The Ohio State line isn’t sorry either, as they average 310.8 lbs as a whole. Three of the five a 6’7″, with Jones being 6’5″ and Price being 6’4″. With a major chip on their shoulders, particularly with the right side of the line, Bowen and Prince will be looking to establish themselves.

Can WR’s break open:

images-2-12.jpg
Finally, can the Buckeye WR’s break open consistently enough to and make plays? This will be hard due to the experience opposing them.

They are all talented, but they need to outwork the DB’s to give Barrett a chance to win the game for them. Barrett wasn’t perfect, and he did miss a few of his guys on errant passes, but the WR’s had a few drops during the game too.

Will they be reliable threats for Barrett? Will they be able to break free from the coverage and make plays? Can Zone 6 make the Buckeye Offense, particularly the deep ball sizzle again?

Prediction:

This will be another hard fought game with the Sooners keeping it close in the first half. Their WR’s will out muscle the DB’s early before halftime. This game will be a back and forth affair until the Buckeye Defense takes over and forces a few turnovers.

With a combination of second half adjustments and the Buckeye front seven’s relentlessness, the Buckeyes pull away in the second half for a close win at home.

This game will showcase many NFL hopefuls and it will be filled with team scouts. This game will also feature the next wave of talent, as many Buckeye commits and targets will be present for the show.

Final Score: 41-31 Buckeyes

Last Thursday we spelled redemption O-S-U

Ohio State’s Week 1 victory over Indiana wasn’t the start-to-finish slaughter that some (including this guy) predicted, but we still saw plenty of the firepower that earned the Buckeyes a No. 2 preseason ranking:

  • The Hoosiers ran for just 17 yards and zero touchdowns on their 27 carries. Five sacks (which count as negative rushing yards for the quarterback in college) are the cause of horrendous average of 0.63 yards per attempt, but the Indiana non-quarterbacks’ 37 yards on 17 carries wasn’t much better.
  • Entering this season, Denzel Ward had not allowed a touchdown in his 44 total targets in coverage, per CFBFilmRoom. This streak ended Saturday, as Ward was mossed by 6'4" 220 pound Simmie Cobbs. Still, he looked like a No. 1 corner for most of the game, recording four solo tackles, five pass break ups, and an interception.
  • If you thought this defensive line could be a bit unfair for the opposition, you were proven correct last Thursday. Sam Hubbard and Dre’Mont Jones were particularly disruptive, combining for one sack, four hits, and nine hurries.

Despite a seemingly limitless amount of perfect back-shoulder throws from Indiana quarterback Richard Lagow, the Buckeyes defense largely dominated for 60 minutes. Let’s take a look at a few of the highlights.

It took awhile, but Ohio State’s secondary started to make plays

Down 7-3 in the second quarter, Indiana had driven all the way to the Buckeyes’ 14-yard and were threatening to take a double-digit lead on the Silver Bullets. Luckily, a well-timed zone call, combined with athletic plays by cornerback Kendall Sheffield and safety Jordan Fuller, led to the Silver Bullets’ first takeaway of the season:

Fuller earned some time on special teams last season, but both of the former four-star defensive backs made their real debut Thursday. Lagow may have thrown for 410 yards, but it took him 65 passes to get there, and the Buckeyes secondary flashed some of the potential that could help them grow up sooner rather than later this season.

Under Pressure

The Buckeyes defensive line reached Lagow at will Thursday, as he was routinely taken to the ground the second he moved on from his first read. Four separate Buckeyes managed to tally a sack, with reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the year TyGod Lewis collecting two:

Lewis has enough bend to capture the corner against most offensive tackles, as he demonstrates in the first clip, but he’s also able to bump inside as a defensive tackle which allows the Buckeyes the chance to get all four of their freak ends on the field at the same time. Lewis may not have the pedigree of Nick Bosa, or the god-given talent of Hubbard, but he sure looked like the class of the group last Thursday night.

It’s not the worst thing when Ohio State starts their season with a 28 point win in Big Ten play that also gives the coaches plenty of film to critique. The Buckeyes will need to play better in all three phases of the game to achieve their goals this season, but last Thursday night demonstrated the reason for the high expectations for this group. In a game where Meyer didn’t even feel the need to put his No. 1 running back in harms way, the Buckeyes physically dominated and took care of business. Hopefully this time around the performance wasn’t too “basic” for any Oklahoma quarterbacks.

The final: 49-21, Ohio State

Defensive player of the game: Tyquan Lewis (2 sacks)

Defensive play of the game: Jordan Fuller interception deep in Buckeye territory.

Next Victim: Oklahoma. Till next week, Columbus.

Breaking down the 4 biggest points from Urban Meyer’s press conference heading into the showdown with Oklahoma

The Buckeyes’ head coach talked to the media on Monday, and divulged some tidbits ahead of Saturday’s primetime contest.

As the football season glides into Week 2, more showdowns between top ranked teams are on the slate this Saturday. The big one: Ohio State vs. Oklahoma.

With the Urban Meyer Monday press conference in the books, let’s break down the four biggest points the Buckeye coach made as his squad prepares for the primetime meeting with the Sooners.

1. “[J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber] will both play. We haven't figured the exact rotation. Mike had a good practice today. He went full speed today.”

After the first game of the season—or more specifically, first game of his OSU career— J.K. Dobbins has bursted onto the college football scene. Dobbins shattered the freshman debut rushing record for a Buckeye by amassing 181 yards in the Thursday night win against the Indiana Hoosiers.

While Dobbins was the sensation of the night, he was in the starting running back role due to Mike Weber recovering from a hamstring injury. In the press conference, Meyer said that Weber is ready to play in the Saturday meeting against OU.

This is good news if you are a fan of the Buckeye rushing game.

Last season, Weber rushed for 1,096 yards and started in 13 games for the Buckeyes. A powerful redshirt-freshman campaign made Weber the No. 1 guy in the RB department entering the 2017 season. However, with the emergence of Dobbins, a dilemma now must find a solution as the Scarlet and Gray take on the Crimson and Cream.

usa_today_9640137.jpg
Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports
A Web You Weave: Mike Weber found the endzone nine times in 2016.

For opposing defenses, the suggestion of a rotation at RB would be a nightmare scenario. Dobbins proved that he can wear down defenses with his speed and carries. Against IU, Dobbins was handed the rock an impressive 29 times and averaged 6.2 yards per pop.

If Dobbins is used as the main guy for the Oklahoma game, then having Weber as the bruising, smash-right-into-you rusher will wear down the Sooner defense by the fourth quarter. Some programs are lucky to have one rusher that can make plays; Ohio State has two—and that’s not counting the playmaking ability of J.T. Barrett on the ground, when it’s needed.

Another primetime contest may bring out another prime performance from the Buckeye backfield.

2. “The obvious is we have to knock some balls down. The one thing about IU, that quarterback is extremely accurate. I said after the game, that's one of the most accurate games I've ever seen a quarterback play.”

The Buckeye pass defense got tested against Hoosier quarterback Richard Lagow. While Ohio State got the win, Lagow was still able to pick apart the OSU secondary. The final stats from Lagow: 410 yards on 40-of-65 passing, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Granted, Lagow threw an absurd amount of passes. On the other hand, that meant the passing game was working. Oklahoma has a QB that, arguably, is one of the best in the country. In the Sooners first game of the season against UTEP, Baker Mayfield completed his first 16 passes (an OU record), and ended the first half going 19-of-20 for 329 yards and three scores.

The deep ball also worked, as Mayfield connected on a 51-yard pass, and had nine other passes go for chunk yardage—a play that picks up more than 15 yards. From an accuracy standpoint, Mayfield has completed 74.4 percent of his throws over the last 11 games. To get that kind of completion percentage, it helps when you have receivers that can make plays, and against UTEP, they did just that.

OSU’s secondary will need to get some pass breakups against Mayfield and his receiving corps. The skill is there in the Buckeye defense, and flashes of it were shown last week. A goal line interception by Jordan Fuller and a late game pick by Denzel Ward shows that Defensive Back University still has a campus in Columbus, Ohio. However, giving up 400+ yard pass performances is not a good way to ensure wins in big games.

3. “Receiver's got to make plays for [Barrett], as well.”

Dropped passes and miscues on the receiving side of OSU’s offense popped up in the Week 1 win in Bloomington, Ind. The most notable of the drops was by Parris Campbell in the endzone. All teams face some kind of problem in the early stages of the season. For the elite programs, wrinkles tend to be ironed out as the season progresses, but these problems get amplified for the Buckeyes because they were problems that creeped up last season.

While Barrett shoulders some of the blame, you start to wonder that maybe he isn’t the one that should be deserving of the blame. Just this past week, Barrett took home one of the Big Ten Weekly Awards for his performance against the Hoosiers, and has constantly put up big numbers in big games. In last season’s meeting with Oklahoma, the Buckeye QB electrified the statbox with a four touchdown night, including a contender for catch of the year by Noah Brown.

The quarterback can only do so much. Barrett is an immensely talented college QB—and his trophy case proves that. But, for good passing performances, you need receivers that can catch the ball and make some plays. Against Indiana, that was on display as Johnnie Dixon and Parris Campbell broke off huge chunk plays for touchdowns in the third quarter. Both of them courtesy of Barrett’s arm.

This week, the Zone 6 rotation needs to keep mistakes to a minimum. Equally important, someone will have to make a big play. If both don’t happen, then the reliance to move the ball comes down on the rushing game. That’s not a bad thing, but the uneven approach (having a rushing attack with an ineffective passing attack) makes the Buckeyes too predictable.

4. “I know Coach Bob Stoops very well.. Yeah, it's going to be the same Oklahoma team.”

Bob Stoops is no longer on the sidelines for Oklahoma. While the visor may be in retirement, the spirit is still there. Lincoln Riley, the new OU coach, was promoted from within the Sooners’ coaching staff. Even though there’s a new coach, the culture and mechanics of operation stays the same.

In Monday’s presser, Meyer was asked if the preparation becomes harder because the coaching situation changed. His response was that it doesn’t. The coordinators are the same (Mike Stoops on defense, Bill Bedenbaugh on offense) for the Sooners, so don’t expect the game plan to change drastically.

The more things change, the more they stay same. That seems to be what’s happening with Oklahoma. If that statement does ring true, then expect the Buckeyes to rack up points on the scoreboard this Saturday night.

One of the top 2018 prospects plans to attend the Ohio State vs Oklahoma game.

With week one in the books, Urban Meyer and the Ohio State football team will now be switching their focus towards defending their home turf when the Oklahoma Sooners come to town this Saturday.

Not only will the coaches be focusing on making adjustments after watching tape from the Indiana game, but they will also have to prepare the monstrous list of expected recruits to visit for the game. A list that will likely continue to grow leading up to the game will now include one of the top prospects in the 2018 class, someone Ohio State has atop their big board.

5-star defensive end Micah Parsons (Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg) was initially slated to visit Ohio State October 28, when the Buckeyes are scheduled to welcome Penn State into Columbus. However, Parsons has reportedly changed this date so he can attend the much-anticipated showdown between the Buckeyes and the Sooners.

5-star DE Parsons Reveals Where He'll Take First Official Visit https://t.co/nx3Cnt58BR via @scoutmedia

— Coach Cleezy (@EdOBrienScout) September 4, 2017

Parsons is one of a few defensive line recruits the Buckeyes have decided to focus on in this year’s class, and for good reason. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 1 DE in the country and the No. 5 overall recruit in the class.

The one-time Penn State commit has been favored to select Ohio State ever since he left the Nittany Lions' class, and the Buckeyes hold 70 percent of the 247Crystall Ball predictions, with Penn State having the remaining 30 percent.

After losing four-star DE Andrew Chatfield last month, Ohio State has just two defensive line commits in this class, but they are two of the best ones to have. However, adding Parsons to a group consisting of five-star DE Brenton Cox and five-star DT Taron Vincent would push this group over the top. Additionally, the Buckeyes are the favorites to land four-star DE Tyreke Smith and are legitimate contenders to land four-star DT Tommy Togiai and four-star DE Jayson Oweh.

Parsons will likely visit other schools following his trip to Columbus this week to ensure he makes the best decision for him, but the Ohio State coaching staff has to love where they are at in his recruitment.

Ohio State offers 2019 4-star Safety

We briefly touched on this yesterday, but this weekend Ohio State once again showed why they have been able to dominate the college football recruiting world when they entered the race for 2019 safety prospect Joseph Charleston (Alpharetta, GA/Milton).

I am extremely honored and blessed to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University!! #gobucks pic.twitter.com/Mc3QmkTyYg

— Joseph Charleston (@jcharleston28) September 4, 2017

Ohio State has become exceptionally good at recognizing talent early on which gives them a head start in establishing relationships with blue-chip prospects. The most recent case of this comes with the offer to Charleston, who has seen his recruitment explode this summer.

Currently, Charleston has a reported eight scholarship offers, but the schools that are taking notice in his talent are some of the best in the country. If Ohio State is going to pry the four-star safety away from SEC country, they will have to compete with schools like Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. Currently, Tennessee is seen as having a leg up on the field, but it is still very early.

While entering his junior season of high school football, Charleston has already shown enough to be viewed as the No. 10 safety in next year's class, as well as being the No. 148 overall recruit.

With the amount of talent Ohio State has lost to the NFL in its secondary over the past two seasons, cornerback and safety will be two positions the Buckeyes will have to focus on in 2019.

Even with all of the emphasis this off-season, the senior QB attempted just three long passes Thursday.

“We made such an emphasis on the deep ball that it’s somewhat disappointing that we didn’t hit a couple of them.”

-Urban Meyer, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

On paper, J.T. Barrett had a highly-successful game versus the Indiana Hoosiers, especially considering the fact he was breaking in new receivers on the road in the team’s opener. Barrett finished the game Thursday with 20 completions on 35 attempts for 304 yards, three touchdowns and no picks. He also rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown in the Buckeyes’ 49-21 win. Still, what remains somewhat disturbing given all of the offseason hype is the fact that Barrett never managed to complete a long pass. Even more disconcerting, Barrett attempted just three such passes. One, targeted to tight end Marcus Baugh, was overthrown. The other two, however, showed that Barrett is actually capable of completing such passes. Wide receiver Parris Campbell dropped a touchdown pass in the endzone; the final pass, an attempt to WR Binjimen Victor, drew a pass interference penalty which, while not padding Barrett’s stats, kept the offense moving downfield.

Urban Meyer acknowledged that it was disappointing that there were no deep balls caught in the game. Given the troubles last year in making the big play, the need for a vertical passing game was a key driver in bringing Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day onto the staff in the offseason. With so few attempts in this first outing after all of these changes, fans are left to wonder if the root cause is a lack of confidence in Barrett, failure of the receivers to get open in space or a desire by Wilson to limit downfield passes.

The latter option may be one of the most viable. Barrett was able to effectively pick apart the Indiana defense from close range. Especially as freshman running back J.K. Dobbins managed to effectively run through the defense, Indiana was on their heels for many of these short-yardage plays.

“The Ohio State sophomore defensive end has grown accustom to the speed of the college game, gotten stronger and added moves to his arsenal--a breakout season, he felt, was coming.”

-Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

It came as no surprise that the Ohio State defensive line was more than stellar in their opener against Indiana Thursday, carrying the rest of the defensive units as they got up to speed. The Buckeyes even showed from the start what Ohio State fans have been dreaming of all offseason, lining up in a five-man defensive front in their first play on defense. What is perhaps more surprising on the loaded line is that sophomore defensive end Nick Bosa played more snaps than any of the other noted players on the line, including Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard and Jalyn Holmes.

While his stat line is not that impressive in itself (he did record a sack in the first half), Bosa was quick off the edge in his snaps, forcing Indiana quarterback Richard Lagow to get off quick throws throughout the game and often allowing one of the other linemen to make a play. That sort of pressure, even if it did not result in a sack, altered Indiana’s gameplan on offense, and is a strength to the defensive line as a whole.

Last season, Bosa tended to play more inside the line as part of the Buckeyes’ “Rushmen” package, which was used for 17 snaps Thursday. This season, however, it is likely that he will line up on the edge more often, as he did Thursday. Even so, he still demonstrated his ability to stuff the run up the middle in his season debut.

One of the benefits of having such a loaded defense is that players can rotate and play fewer snaps in a given game, reducing fatigue and allowing for more explosive plays against a progressively more worn-down offensive line. Thursday, a total of 12 defensive linemen saw the field, with snap counts ranging from six to Bosa’s 62. This group was used in 24 different arrangements.

“ESPN GameDay has been good to Ohio State. The Buckeyes hold a 26-12 record in games played following a GameDay appearance, and are 11-4 in those games played in Columbus.”

-Jason Priestas, Eleven Warriors

For the second week in a row, ESPN’s College GameDay will be on-site for an Ohio State game. While it was a crazy opening weekend for the pre-game show, which traveled from Bloomington on Thursday to Atlanta on Saturday ahead of the Alabama-Florida State game, the crew will settle into its usual schedule of one site per week starting this weekend.

Columbus has been a favorite spot to host the show, with Lee Corso and team visiting Ohio State a whopping 15 times. With this weekend’s scheduled appearance added to the mix, that number is tied (technically) with Alabama, who played three of their games off-campus in Birmingham. This weekend will also mark the fourth-straight time that the Buckeyes have had GameDay on-site for their matchups, dating back to last season’s final two games against Michigan and Clemson.

Of course, it makes sense that the show would visit the Buckeyes so often. Since GameDay began touring campuses in 1993, Ohio State has been one of the winningest programs in college football, and they have won more games than anyone over the last two decades. Especially as Urban Meyer joined the program, the Buckeyes gained additional prestige, producing monster numbers of draft picks each year who simply have to be watched in person before they head to the NFL. Still, GameDay didn’t cover an Ohio State game until 1996, when they had three matchups in five weeks (at No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 3 Penn State at home, and at No. 20 Iowa). The Buckeyes won all three games during that stretch, finishing ranked second nationally. And the matchup against Penn State marked that historic moment when, for the first time, Corso donned headgear to declare his pick for the game. He chose Brutus, and he chose wisely.

Overall, Corso is 20-10 when picking Brutus.
