Money was moving away from the Buckeyes throughout Monday.

After the Oklahoma Sooners rolled out of Columbus, Ohio with a win against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday night, Vegas took notice. Lincoln Riley’s OU squad moved up a tad in the recent batch of odds, while Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes took a small slip, according to the sports book Bovada.

The odds were shuffling around on Monday afternoon, as OSU went from 8/1 odds, to 9/1. Entering the contest with Oklahoma, the Scarlet & Gray held 6/1 odds of being the kings of college football again.

Oklahoma entered the Ohio State contest with 14/1 odds of winning the whole shebang, and with the 31-16 win, improved their odds to 8/1 early Monday. However, the money was moving toward the Sooners, as those odds closed in—and improved— to 7/1 by the late afternoon.

Both schools are still behind the reigning national champion runner-ups, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Leading the odds futures at 7/4 is warranted, as Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide defeated then-No.3 Florida State in Week 1.

USC has the second best title odds at 6/1. This week, the Trojans face Texas in a rematch of the 2006 Rose Bowl — the national championship that season.

With Alabama, USC, Oklahoma and Ohio State holding the top four odds, a couple Big Ten schools are knocking at the door. Penn State and Michigan, who are both on OSU’s schedule this season, and each hold 14/1 odds of regining supreme in college football.

Odds are a very fluid situation, and can change at a moment’s notice depending on the money that’s being put down/away from teams.

We run down all the best Buckeye action from the NFL’s opening weekend.

Saturday didn’t go exactly as Ohio State would have liked, but there were plenty of former players still representing the hard-hitting, championship-winning Buckeyes on the next level. Week 1 of the 2017 NFL season saw a mix of good and bad performances by former members of the Scarlet and Gray, including some first-year players getting their first taste of go time.

Rookie debuts

It didn’t take long for the Minnesota Vikings to hand the starting center job to Buckeye rookie Pat Elflein. Not only did he get the start -- the first rookie center to start opening night since 1962 — but he had a great performance, putting the fan base solely in his corner for years to come.

That was center Pat Elflein lead blocking 20 yards down the field in front of McKinnon.

The Colts were excited to debut their 2017 draft pick and interception magnet, Malik Hooker. The Buckeye saw some action with four total tackles (one solo) in Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Nice sudden change for the #Colts defense there.

Penalties aiding the D.

Seeing a lot of Malik Hooker so far, after Farley started.

— Kevin Bowen (@KBowenColts) September 10, 2017

The Saints didn’t look that great against the Vikings, but there was one positive note: rookie CB Marshon Lattimore. He didn’t see much playing time early in the Monday night contest, but did manage to make four solo tackles in his NFL debut.

On a positive #Saints note, rookie CB Marshon Lattimore has had solid coverage almost all night.

— Deuce Windham (@RevDeuceWindham) September 12, 2017

Curtis Samuel was on the field in Week 1 for the Panthers, but he didn’t record any stats on offense. He was open a few times, but fellow rookie Christian McCaffrey saw most of the focus in an evolving offense in Carolina.

Curtis Samuel was back deep to field the kick... but it's a touchback.

— Max Henson (@PanthersMax) September 10, 2017

Wideout Noah Brown was listed as inactive in Week 1 for the Dallas Cowboys, but with injuries, and various legal situations surrounding the Cowboys, the Buckeye should be getting his chance to shine any week now.

Pryor wasn’t exactly electric

There was a lot of chatter since the end of last season about Terrelle Pryor Sr. and his potential at the wide receiver position. After a rocky free agency with the Browns, he wound up signing with Washington and was expected to be the deep threat Kirk Cousins needed for both of them to get extended contracts following the season.

If Sunday’s debut of the duo was any indication, some of those expectations might have been a little bit premature. Pryor wound up with 66 yards on six receptions, keeping his yards per carry and first down stats consistent with last season, but failed to live up to the big-play hype people were expecting.

Heyward is back, baby

After missing most of the 2016 season, Cameron Heyward is back to bullying quarterbacks for the Steelers. The Buckeye snagged three tackles and this sack against the Browns on Sunday, on the way to a win for Pittsburgh.

Plays of the week

The Los Angeles Chargers made their way to Mile High Stadium to take on the Denver Broncos, and a pair of former Buckeyes made some big plays. It was the last game of the NFL’s opening weekend, kicking off late-night on Monday.

Chargers DE Joey Bosa picked up exactly where he left off in 2016 — obliterating quarterbacks. The second-year phenom recorded 1.5 sacks and six total tackles against the Broncos.

— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) September 12, 2017

Despite those heralding stats, everyone is talked about when Denver QB Trevor Siemian juked his way into the endzone Monday, leaving Bosa eating dirt.

On the other side of the ball, Broncos CB Bradley Roby snagged himself an interception in Week 1, along with two pass breakups and five total tackles.

Injury report and suspensions

  • Nate Ebner was sidelined with a shoulder injury during the “Thursday Night Football” kick-off to the 2017 season, featuring a New England loss to Kansas City.
  • Rookie CB Gareon Conley has been battling a shin injury since early in training camp, missing most of the preseason, and was once again relegated to the sideline for what would have been his first official NFL game.
  • Jaguars DT Michael Bennett has been battling injuries since he was drafted in 2015, and the streak continues, being sidelined in Week 1 with a groin injury.
  • Jalin Marshall may have seen the field for the Jets during the preseason, but Week 1 started his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

After promising to fix the passing offense for two years, it’s time for Meyer to finally replace the man throwing the ball

“I feel the same pressure as everyone here to get very good in the pass game,” said an irked Urban Meyer to the media, following Ohio State’s embarrassing 31-16 loss at the hands of Oklahoma in The Horseshoe Saturday night. “It wasn’t good tonight. We’ve got to get the damn thing fixed.”

If Meyer’s comments don’t sound familiar, then you probably haven’t been following this program closely for the past two years. Meyer promised that he would fix the passing game at the end of the 2015 season, when the team’s prehistoric-looking attack derailed what was likely the most talented team in the country that year. Twelve months later, Meyer found himself making the same promises, following a humbling beatdown at the hands of Clemson in the College Football Playoffs.

At this point, Meyer sounds like a broken record. Perhaps it’s time for the head coach to turn to a different conductor, in search for a different tune.

College football fans are a notoriously prickly lot, and there is likely not a fanbase that better resembles a cartoonish, pitchforks-and-torches mob than Buckeye Nation following a loss. We call for coaches to be fired when we understand less about football than they could ever forget. We spit vitriol at a quarterback who will graduate as one of the most decorated athletes in the program’s history. Dare I say, we can be spoiled.

With that in mind, J.T. Barrett deserves better than this. He’s been a divisive figure among Buckeye Nation for some time now; we debated his merits in comparison to Cardale Jones in 2015, and we debated his responsibility for the offense’s lack of cohesion a season ago. Over time his detractors have seemingly grown in volume, if not in sheer numbers. Even Corey Smith, a former teammate of Barrett’s, was calling for a quarterback change Saturday night.

To Barrett’s credit, many of his former teammates alternatively flocked to his defense. Jones himself defended the man that he once battled with for the starting quarterback job, as Buckeye fans collectively destroyed Barrett on Twitter Saturday night.

Win or lose, JT has done more than any player in OSU HISTORY. Best QB to ever play for the Bucks, so let's not forget & start point fingers

— Cardale Jones (@Cardale7_) September 10, 2017

J.T. Barrett is many things. He’s the only three-time captain in the history of the football program. He’s a fifth-year senior, a celebrated leader, and is 3-0 against rival Michigan. But he’s not the best quarterback to ever play for the Scarlet and Gray, far from it, if we’re being honest. And as Barrett continues to look disastrous as a quarterback against teams with comparative talent, it’s become increasingly apparent that he might not be the right quarterback to lead Ohio State to a championship.

Championship or bust might seem like an unrealistic notion, but this is what’s expected out of elite teams and programs. Much like the Cleveland Cavaliers are evaluated on the scale of “Does this move make them closer to beating the Golden State Warriors?”, Ohio State is evaluated by whether or not it’s competing at a national level. It’s the silent contract you agree to as an elite high school prospect when you sign with Urban Meyer and Ohio State.

It’s one thing to lose to Oklahoma at home or to Clemson in the College Football Playoffs. It’s another thing entirely to look like you simply don’t belong. For that reason, Ohio State deserves better than J.T. Barrett.

Supporters of Barrett will counter by placing at least a share of the blame at the hands of an offensive line that has struggled in pass protection for much of the past two seasons, and a receiving group that has been pedestrian on its best days. Meyer himself loves to say that the quarterback is simply the product of those around him. But at what point does the quarterback need to be held accountable for his inability to elevate everyone else’s play?

How can the offensive line reasonably thwart oncoming pass rushers, when defenses pack the box without any regard for a downfield passing threat? Are the receivers failing to find separation in the secondary, or are the coaches so hamstrung by Barrett’s inability to push the ball downfield that the pass catchers are only enabled to run a portion of the route tree?

It's been a rough start to the year for Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett.. really struggling on any throws beyond 15 yards pic.twitter.com/I7laZxeHXc

— CFB Film Room (@CFBFilmRoom) September 10, 2017

Through two games, Barrett is a paltry 3-for-20 on throws beyond 15 yards. Many hoped that new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson would usher in a dynamic passing attack, and restore Barrett to his efficient 2014 form. Wilson has unleashed some of the nation’s most potent offenses as a coordinator and head coach for more than two decades. Yet thus far, the heralded play caller’s system has largely resembled that of his maligned predecessors Ed Warinner and Tim Beck.

A core tenant of Meyer’s program is competitiveness; players are driven to fight for their jobs in every game and practice, or risk being passed up by a younger player on a roster dripping with former four and five-star recruits. Meyer has rotated coordinators, receivers and offensive linemen throughout the past two seasons, as he’s searched for a remedy for his failing passing game.

The Buckeyes have been derailed by disastrous quarterback play in each of their last four losses, and Barrett is the lone constant in all of those games. On Monday, Meyer stated that the player who gives the team the best chance to win will play, regardless of position. It’s become abundantly clear that Barrett is not the answer against championship-caliber competition. Whether or not Meyer takes action in light of this reality will likely determine the tone of Ohio State’s 2017 campaign.

If a change isn’t made, Meyer will likely be singing a familiar tune about the need for a more potent passing attack yet again next season.

Even though he watched the Buckeyes lose Saturday night, one of Ohio State’s top recruits still had a great visit.

It's always disappointing when Ohio State suffers a loss, but it's even more difficult to swallow when the loss occurs during one of the biggest recruiting weekends of the year. Unfortunately, this is the situation Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes coaching staff have found themselves in after losing to Oklahoma this past Saturday night.

With that being said, Ohio State is not like many other programs and one loss will not completely deter a top prospect from being interested in the school. Also, Meyer has been in this situation before and has come out of it just fine.

In the 2014 season, the Buckeyes lost a home night-game in shocking fashion when Virginia Tech came to Columbus and beat Ohio State 35-21. Despite the loss, the recruiting class for that year finished No. 7 overall and No. 1 in the Big Ten. The following year, Michigan State came to Columbus and stole a close one from the Buckeyes in what was another huge recruiting weekend for the Buckeyes. The recruiting class for that year finished No. 4 overall and again, was the top ranked class in the conference.

With Meyer at the helm of this program, recruiting will never be a problem for Ohio State.

Four-star DE “had a great official (visit)”

It appears that Ohio State is still sitting in good position for one of the country’s top defensive ends, as Jayson Oweh (Blairstown, NJ/Blair Academy) had only good things to say about Ohio State after his official visit last weekend.

Had a great official to OSU this weekend took in a lot and learned a lot⭕pic.twitter.com/6zEinBAumC

— Clout J (@JaysonOweh) September 11, 2017

Oweh is a four-star DE and is seen as the No. 7 DE in the country and the No. 158 overall prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The Buckeyes have been recruiting him heavily this year and he is one of the few remaining defensive line prospect the Buckeyes are still targeting in this class.

However, Ohio State is competing with some of the best programs in the country to earn his commitment. Oweh holds a reported 24 scholarship offers from schools like Penn State, Wisconsin, Maryland, Notre Dame, Florida, Georgia, Louisville, UNC, Miami, and Ohio State.

As it stands today, Ohio State and Penn State appear to be the two schools to beat in his recruitment. Oweh has visited these two schools more than any of the others that have expressed interest in him. His trip to Columbus was his first official visit and the only other official he has scheduled is Penn State. Currently, Penn State holds the majority of the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions with 62 percent of the votes. The remaining 38 percent belongs to Ohio State.

Ohio State will have to continue to increase their efforts in recruiting Oweh if they plan on adding him to this year’s class, but it appears the visit couldn’t have gone better, all things considered.

What’s the deal with Micah Parsons?

Five-star DE Micah Parsons (Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg) is one of the trickiest prospects in the 2018 class to peg and he is also one of the Buckeyes’ top remaining targets. The one time Penn State commit has been viewed as a heavy Ohio State lean since leaving the Nittany Lions' class, but it is far from being a done deal.

Parsons was in town for the Oklahoma game and many hoped the visit would have resulted in more clarity in his recruitment. However, this was not the case.

The No. 1 DE in the country initially seemed to enjoy his time on campus. He was spotted at ESPN’s College Game Day, where he was able to meet Ohio State legendary RB Eddie George and claimed he was having the time of his life.

5-star Micah Parsons getting a visit with #Buckeye great Eddie George during his #OhioState official visit https://t.co/V2mF4P55Bu pic.twitter.com/6fnYcKy9B9

— Adam Friedman (@RivalsFriedman) September 9, 2017

However, as the visit went on and Oklahoma cemented the victory over Ohio State, Parson’s attitude made a complete shift. To be fair, the same can be said for every other Ohio State fan.

Following the game, Parsons took an apparent shot at Ohio State’s QB situation, calling for Meyer to bench the Buckeyes' only three-time captain and starting QB J.T. Barrett in favor of redshirt freshman Dwayne Haskins. While this was obviously not a great look for Parsons, it must also be noted that many other Ohio State fans - and recruits - were thinking the same thing. On top of this, Parsons was quick to note that his emotions got the best of him that night.

Just one day later, there was another update in Parsons’ recruitment. Using Twitter, Parsons made it known that he was working on finalizing his top four schools and that he would be announcing the list soon.

Top 4 coming soon...

— BLESSEDMVP (@Micah_parsons23) September 10, 2017

Ohio State will likely be included in his list, and now that Parsons has confirmed that he will be in Happy Valley this weekend for his second official visit, Penn State will likely make the cut as well. As for the other two finalists, my personal bet is on Nebraska and Alabama, but Notre Dame is a solid contender to make the cut as well.

So what does all of this mean for his recruitment? Not much. Obviously, the loss was a damper on Parsons’ visit, but it was never expected that Parsons would commit last weekend either. Penn State and Ohio State are pretty much neck and neck at this point but that is about all we know.

Parsons’ recruitment will likely last until National Signing Day and until his name is on a dotted line, nothing is guaranteed.

Saturday was ugly. But that doesn’t mean the Buckeyes are done for the season.

“But if Ohio State is going to duplicate the bounce-back run to the national title of the 2014 squad, it will need to keep these lessons in mind as it regroups for a nonconference matchup with Army this week.”

-Austin Ward, Land of 10

As troubling as Ohio State’s loss to Oklahoma Saturday was, there is no reason to hit the panic button just yet. The Buckeyes still have every opportunity to win a Big Ten title, and the nonconference loss happened early enough in the season that Ohio State still has a chance to recover before the selection committee makes its initial picks for the College Football Playoff. However, in order to get to that point, the Buckeyes need to make some obvious improvements on both sides of the ball. Just as the 2014 squad came together following the loss to Virginia Tech in Week 2, so does this team need to mature and gel as a unit.

For starters, even with the renewed passing attack promised by Kevin Wilson’s new offense, the strength of Ohio State’s offense lies in its running game. With Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins at running back and J.T. Barrett at quarterback, opposing defenses have a tough time figuring out how to stop the Buckeyes’ three-headed running monster. Unfortunately, the trio didn’t get nearly as many touches as they probably should have in retrospect, with Weber and Dobbins combining for just 16 carries. While Barrett himself had 18 carries for 66 yards, better utilization of the tailbacks could have resulted in a stronger offensive performance overall for the Buckeyes.

On the defensive side, the defensive line showed why they are one of the elite units in college football, with Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and Nick Bosa combining to wreak havoc on Baker Mayfield. Hubbard and Bosa both got a sack on Saturday night.

In terms of specialists, kicker Sean Nuernberger and punter Drue Chrisman provided the efficiency and excellence that has come to be expected at Ohio State in terms of special teams. Nuernberger connected on all three of his field goal attempts while Chrisman averaged 46 yards per punt, landing all four attempts inside of Oklahoma’s 20 yard line.

“Ohio State fans need only to point to an opposing quarterback planting a crimson-and-cream flag at midfield in the Horseshoe. After two weeks of the 2017 season, Auburn, Notre Dame and Ohio State are among the biggest disappointments in college football.”

-Mark Schlabach, ESPN

The good news for Ohio State, after a more-than-disappointing loss to Oklahoma over the weekend, is that they are, at least, not alone. Auburn, who was taken down by Clemson Saturday, allowed 11 sacks on quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Stidham also recorded just 79 passing yards, which makes J.T. Barrett’s 183 seem perfectly reasonable. Notre Dame, meanwhile, suffered a one-point loss to Georgia Saturday, despite 12 penalties and two turnovers by the Bulldogs, who were also starting a freshman quarterback.

All three of these teams entered the 2017 season with high expectations, given massive changes for all three programs in the offseason. Adjustments to Ohio State’s coaching staff have been well-documented, especially Kevin Wilson’s arrival as offensive coordinator and Ryan Day’s appointment as quarterbacks coach. At Notre Dame, Brian Kelly completely overhauled the program, hiring 17 new assistants and coordinators to the coaching staff. Gus Malzahn, while less extreme, also facilitated serious adjustments in the offseason, bringing in a new offensive coordinator and gaining Stidham as a transfer from Baylor.

However, those high expectations were, perhaps, highest for Ohio State, who entered the season ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll. Despite an embarrassing, shutout loss in the Fiesta Bowl to Clemson, there was still an expectation that the Buckeyes would come back as a much-improved team in the fall. While those expectations may have been too high, given the youth of the secondary and the inexperience of many of the wide receivers, the team was supposed to show dominance in other position groups early. Barrett, for instance, was supposed to assert himself in Wilson’s new system, the veteran and three-time captain leading the charge.

Still, the season is young. The Buckeyes have a lot of adjustments to make, but given their next three matchups against Army, UNLV and Rutgers, they should have some space to make changes.

“While none of that is good, it obscures the other, equally glaring crisis on the other side of the ball: Ohio State’s pass defense has been a complete catastrophe through two games.”

-Zach Barnett, NBC Sports

While much of the criticism following Ohio State’s 31-16 loss to Oklahoma Saturday centered on a poor offensive attack plan, perhaps the greater crisis is one which has been lurking since the spring: the utter lack of reliability in the secondary. With the lure of new offensive weapons and a defensive line that can dismantle opposing offensive lines, the fact that the Buckeyes lost three first round picks at cornerback and safety, and that these players would need to be replaced by individuals with much less experience, seemed to go under the radar.

However, that fact has now become undeniable, as Ohio State has allowed more passing yards than literally every other team in the FBS through two weeks of play. What makes this drop particularly troubling is that the Buckeyes were seventh in the category last year, allowing just 172.2 passing yards per game. Overall defensive pass efficiency has dropped from No. 3 in the NCAA to No. 110 as the Buckeyes have allowed completions on 69 of 103 passes attempted against them for 806 yards, six touchdowns and two picks. They are the fourth-most passed against team in the country, and the six touchdowns given up through the air are more than all but six teams currently.

Even so, two games is a small sample size, especially when those two games come against two of the top passing teams in the country. Oklahoma did finish last season ranked 12th nationally in passing offense, averaging 318 yards per game through the air. Indiana, meanwhile, was 28th in the NCAA, with 273.8 passing yards per game. In many ways, this statistic is a reflection of the teams played so far this season, and there is still opportunity to improve for the young unit. The good news for the Buckeyes is that Army, their opponent this weekend, has just 17 passing yards on the season.

Podcasting about the Buckeyes’ latest dreadful performance in a big game.

It’s a minor miracle that Ohio State only lost to Oklahoma by 15 points. From the start, the Buckeyes were completely outplayed in all three facets of the game, and only a litany of first half mistakes from the Sooners kept the home team’s hopes alive.

After a quick Ohio State touchdown drive to start the second half, the Sooners played near-perfect football, scoring touchdowns on four of their next five drives, and holding the Buckeyes to just two field goals the rest of the way. While it’s easy to place all the blame on J.T. Barrett, the Buckeyes were lackluster across the board, and have a lot of questions to answer over the next couple of weeks before they begin Big Ten play.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holy Land, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn discuss everything Ohio State’s lopsided loss, and how almost everyone—from the coaches to the players—looked bad. The guys try to break down exactly what went wrong, including:

  • Barrett’s struggles, and what they think of his status as the starting quarterback.
  • The coaching staff’s questionable playcalling, and their decision to not feed the ball to J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber.
  • Another head-scratching game from #Zone6
  • Why the defense (including the vaunted Ohio State defensive line) looked so overmatched.
  • Concerns about poor play from the linebackers and secondary, and more.

To wrap it up, the guys give their thoughts about Baker Mayfield planting the OU flag at mid-field, fan support at the game and on Twitter, why the season isn’t lost, and their early impressions of this week’s game against Army.

BTN Week 3 primer: Wisconsin’s trip to BYU highlights slate

Week 3 primer: Wisconsin’s trip to BYU highlights slate
Tom Dienhart, BTN.com Senior Writer via Big Ten Network

The third and final week of full-blown non-conference games is here. And, after last week’s strong lineup of game, this week’s slate lacks much pizzazz. The best game looks like Wisconsin’s trip to BYU, but this isn’t a vintage Cougar squad as it is struggling on offense.
