The quarterback was excellent against the ‘Huskers.

2014 J.T. Barrett is back.

It’s not about the [lack of] competition anymore when talking about Barrett’s recent success. It’s his poise, decision making and confidence that will allow him to do what he did against Nebraska, against anyone. He has full confidence in his offensive line, his pass catchers and his arm, which will cause defensive coordinators to lose sleep at night.

We haven’t seen this J.T. Barrett since the 2014 season, but get used to it, because this type of play is here to stay.

  • Quickly looking at the chart outside of Barrett, the one major thing that stands out is the offensive line. They haven’t been talked about much this season — which is typically good for an offensive line -- but they’ve been playing extremely well. Against Nebraska, Barrett was only pressured three times, hit twice and sacked once. That’s an incredible number for 38 dropbacks. In fact, the first pressure they allowed came at the 2:24 mark of the third quarter. They’re keeping him upright and opening throwing windows for Barrett.
DMTlvkmX0AAf8Lq.jpg

  • Barrett’s lone poor throw of the day occurred when he almost got Parris Campbell killed on a screen. The defensive back quickly diagnosed the screen (Ohio State didn’t have the numbers) and popped Campbell right away, ending his night prematurely. Barrett has to make sure he has the numbers advantage before throwing the screen pass to the perimeter.
  • For the first time in a long time, it looked like Barrett was told to hand the ball off on the zone read, rather than making the correct read throughout the night. On a number of instances, Barrett just handed the ball off to J.K. Dobbins or Mike Weber, rather than making the read. The staff most likely wanted to save the quarterback from contact with Penn State on the horizon — they also only called four designed runs.
  • If you were watching the broadcast, you most likely heard the color announcer talking about Kevin Wilson’s “Mesh Concept.” Here’s a great view from behind the quarterback that shows this concept and how confused it makes the middle of the opposing defense. As we’ve seen through the first half of the season, Johnnie Dixon continues to be open in the middle of the field when the linebackers continue follow the crossers out of the middle of the field.

Rushing 3 and dropping 8 is not the way to beat the Buckeyes. Barrett works through his reads with plenty of time in the pocket. pic.twitter.com/s8hErV7Y7a

— Kyle Morgan (@NoHuddleScouts) October 16, 2017
  • It’s more than just the quarterback who’s improved; it’s also the receivers. They’re gaining separation on the perimeter, making tough catches in traffic and winning their one-on-one battles. Here’s a terrific route by Austin Mack — who has improved every single week — to move the chains. For as much garbage as we’ve given Zach Smith in the past, he’s done a tremendous job since the Oklahoma game. The whole core of receivers are dependable and consistent — something we’ve been unable to say since 2014.
  • What’s been so impressive about Barrett has been his poise in the pocket and his knack to keep his eyes downfield. Here, he looked like vintage Johnny Manziel in the pocket by buying time in the pocket and finding Dobbins for the first down.

J.T. Manziel keeping his eyes downfield while making a Houdini act in the pocket. pic.twitter.com/tRDmV803um

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) October 17, 2017
  • A few weeks ago, Barrett would have quickly checked down to Dobbins here. Now, Barrett trusts his eyes, his arm and his receiver to rifle a pass into an area where four defenders are present. His confidence is soaring right now.

A few weeks ago, Barrett dumps this off to the RB. Now he's comfortable going through his progressions and trusting his arm. pic.twitter.com/8hcO9AWCGf

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) October 17, 2017
  • Barrett’s perfectly thrown pass to Terry McLaurin is the deep ball connection we’ve all been waiting for. He could have thrown it a second earlier, but it still had great placement where only McLaurin could make a play on the ball.

Beautiful throw by Barrett on Terry McLaurin's corner route. pic.twitter.com/D8Ws3FV7uV

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) October 17, 2017
  • The best part of all of this is the confidence that Barrett has in every single pass catcher on the field right now. Eight players have double digit receptions and 10 different receivers have reached the end zone. Barrett is throwing to the open guy whether it’s Campbell, Dobbins, Rashod Berry, Binjimen Victor or Weber. This is the first time since 2014 where Barrett feels comfortable with every player on the field and it’s showing on the scoreboard.

One turnover? One tackle for a loss? No sacks? No problem!

Another week, another conference win. Nobody expected the Nebraska Cornhuskers to be a pushover when they were accepted to the Big Ten in 2010, but it turns out that J.T. Barrett guy is pretty special and it’s hard to rebound from 35-0 halftime deficits. Some notes from Ohio State’s fifth-consecutive win:

  • We knew the secondary’s ability to limit big plays would be a huge factor going into this game — and it was. Ohio State allowed just one pass over 20 yards before climbing to an insurmountable 42-0 lead. Cornhuskers quarterback Tanner Lee rebounded in the third quarter and ended up with 303 yards and two touchdowns, but it was the Silver Bulletts’ ability to limit chunk plays in the first half that helped put this one away early.
  • Once again, the Buckeyes forced their opponent to become one dimensional. Nebraska totaled just 44 rushing yards on 16 attempts, an average of just 2.8 yards per attempt. The Cornhuskers didn’t break a run longer than 11 yards, and their low average is even more absurd after considering the Buckeyes didn’t register any sacks.
  • A typical Buckeye beat down, has usually consisted of numerous defensive splash plays, but Ohio State only registered one tackle for a loss, no sacks, and just one interception (on the last play of the game). A defense as talented as Ohio State’s is always capable of creating a game-changing play, but their ability to play sound football and hold an opponent to just 14 points without the benefit of numerous turnovers points to the improvement in tackling and steady play from the secondary.

Even without the benefit of negative plays and turnovers, there were plenty of stars on the defensive side of the ball for the Buckeyes. Here are a few notable standouts.

Damon Arnette continues to blanket the opposition

Arnette was suspended for the first half of the game due to a targeting penalty during the second half of the Maryland game, but continued to make his presence felt once on the field. Overall, he led the team with two pass deflections and showed why he’s joined Denzel Ward and Kendall Sheffield as the defense’s top-three corners:

Arnette demonstrates both his ability to play outside corner and get his head around when the ball is under thrown on the first play in the above video; while he blankets the slot receiver on following snaps to help force a fourth down after. Slot corners aren’t afforded a sideline for assistance and it’s been an exploitable position on recent Buckeye defenses. Still, Arnette has displayed sticky-coverage technique and is helping make the middle of the field just as dangerous as the the outside.

Nick Bosa: Still very good

Bosa has established himself as the most-feared edge rusher on a defense with plenty to spare. He didn’t add to his team-high 4.0 sacks Saturday night, but this didn’t stop him from reminding the Cornhuskers linemen they didn’t have a chance at stopping him:

Bosa is humiliating tackles on a weekly basis, but there’s simply too much talent across the defensive line to routinely double him. Remember: he is just a true sophomore. We likely haven’t even seen the best version of Bosa yet, but the current state is already pretty damn frightening.

Jerome Baker continues to make plays

MOUTH PIECES WERE FLYING IN LINCOLN, NEBRASKA LAST SATURDAY NIGHT:

Baker demonstrates his insane versatility during two huge plays in the second quarter. First, he set the edge on a 3rd-and-1 run directly at him before sifting his way through traffic and ultimately standing the running back up for no gain at the line of scrimmage. Having fast linebackers that can cover are great, but they’re useless without the ability to hold up against the run. Later, Baker shoots past the over-matched receiver assigned to block him and makes the second-best hit of the season. Chris Worley and Dante Booker had nice days at the office as well, and this Buckeyes front seven is all that much scarier when both levels of the interior are clicking.

After losing to Virginia Tech in 2014, nobody took Ohio State seriously until they took down then-eighth-ranked Michigan State in East Lansing. With a bye week to prepare, the Buckeyes will have a chance to again stake their claim as the Big Ten’s premier contender on October 28th against the Penn State Nittany Lions.

The final: 56-14, Ohio State

Defensive player of the game: Jerome Baker (3 tackles, 1 TFLs, 1 QB hurry)

Defensive play of the game: Jerome Baker briefly ending a Nebraska running back’s life.

Next Victim: Penn State. Keep it classy, Columbus.

The Hangout in the Holyland recaps the win over Nebraska and looks back at the Buckeyes’ dominant month.

Ohio State has been on a tear since losing to Oklahoma.

Since that loss, the Buckeyes are 5-0, have outscored their opponents by an average of 53-11, and own the nation’s most efficient offense in the country. Oh, the defense also hasn’t given up a single point in a non-garbage time situation since the 2nd quarter of the Army game, too. Their opponents haven’t been great by any measure, but the Buckeyes are playing as well as any team in the country right now, and that was on full display in their 56-14 over Nebraska on Saturday.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holy Land, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn break down Ohio State’s latest blowout, and look back at everything that’s stood out to them about the team over the last month, including:

  • The players finally looking comfortable in Kevin Wilson’s offense, and J.T. Barrett putting up more big numbers.
  • Whether this is the most diverse offense we’ve seen under Urban Meyer.
  • Giving props to the defensive line (again) for not allowing Nebraska to have any success running the ball.
  • The improving linebacker play, what they thought about the secondary’s performance, and Jordan Fuller’s impressive game.

The guys also talk about who they’re rooting for in the Michigan/Penn State game this weekend, look ahead to the bye, and more!

The Ohio State coaching staff visited Anthony Cook Monday in hopes of securing a commitment.

The Ohio State football program is entering its bye week, giving both players and coaches an extra week to watch game tape and practice in preparation for their matchup versus Penn State. And while players will likely have some extra free time this week, the Ohio State coaching staff isn’t taking a break, as both Urban Meyer and Greg Schiano traveled to Houston, Texas Monday to watch and talk with Anthony Cook.

Cook has been a priority for Ohio State since the program offered him in July of 2016, and the wait is finally over. The five-star cornerback is scheduled to announce his collegiate decision on October 30 and wrapped up his final official visit last weekend at LSU.

Cook is down to a final three of Texas, LSU, and Ohio State, with the Buckeyes long being seen as the favorite to land his services. However, after visiting Austin twice this fall, the Longhorns have appeared to have narrowed that gap and it looks to be more of a two-horse race with LSU on the outside looking in.

Because of the recent development, the Ohio State coaching staff felt it necessary to visit Cook during the bye week to ensure they have done all they can do to earn a commitment from him. According to Andrew Lind of Eleven Warriors, Ohio State sent the house, as both Meyer and Schiano visited Cook Monday.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano are in Houston today to see five-star cornerback Anthony Cook.

— Andrew Lind (@AndrewMLind) October 16, 2017

Cook is seen as one of the top players in the entire 2018 recruiting class. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have the 6'0, 168-pound CB listed as the No. 2 CB in the class and the No. 14 overall recruit, regardless of position.

The Ohio State coaching staff has been all-in on Cook while finalizing their recruiting class this year. The program likely could have landed four-star CB Houston Griffith, who committed to Florida State last week, but communication between the two dwindled as Ohio State shifted its focus directly on Cook.

This will likely be the last time the coaching staff and Cook will have time to talk before his commitment date later this month. While he is still expected to commit to the Buckeyes, nothing is certain because Cook himself has still yet to come to a decision. Ohio State has done all it can to land Cook and now all the coaches can do is play the waiting game.

2019 4-star OT lists Ohio State in top 4

With Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class filling up quickly, the Buckeyes’ coaching staff has begun shifting its focus towards next year’s class. Urban Meyer and the rest of his staff are among the best at scouting young talent, which gives the program an incredible head start at building relationships with elite level recruits early on in the recruiting cycle.

The Ohio State coaches have started to see their work pay off as the program learned they made the cut for one of 2019’s best offensive tackles. Four-star OT Harry Miller (Buford, GA/Buford) spoke with Chad Simmons of Rivals.com and confirmed the Buckeyes are one of his top four schools right now.

Along with Ohio State, Miller listed Clemson, Georgia, and Michigan as his top four schools. He has unofficially visited all four schools, meaning it will be important to get him back on campus a few more times in order to secure a commitment.

Miller has shown enough in just two and a half seasons of high school football to be seen as the No. 14 OT in the class and the No. 110 overall recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Alongside this, Rivals.com has him slated as their No. 13 OT and No. 84 overall recruit, and if Miller continues to play at a high level through his senior season, he will only continue to receive more accolades.

Ohio State views the offensive line as the highest of priorities and Miller would make an excellent addition to four-star OT Doug Nester, the Buckeyes' lone commitment in the 2019 class.

Quick Hit:

Ohio State four-star DE target and Cleveland native Tyreke Smith visited Alabama this past weekend and appeared to enjoy it. The Buckeyes are still the favorite to land Smith, but both Alabama and Penn State are working on getting a commitment from him as well.

The senior quarterback has been on-point for the past five games, and looks to keep rolling.

“I just feel like there’s a good chemistry on offense. The receivers and quarterback are playing at a very high level. Very efficient. J.T.’s efficiency was elite.”

-Urban Meyer, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

After yet another explosive performance against Nebraska on Saturday, it seems that senior quarterback J.T. Barrett is playing the best football of his career at Ohio State--and that includes that time he led the Buckeyes to a berth in the College Football Playoff and finished fifth in the Heisman voting as a redshirt freshman.

There is no denying that Barrett had a rough patch that stretched from the conclusion of last season to this year’s Week 2 matchup with Oklahoma. Things began to unravel against Michigan, and flaws were fully exposed versus Clemson as the Buckeyes looked utterly ineffective on offense. This season, fans did not see the downfield passing against Indiana which was promised under the regime of Kevin Wilson, and problems finally culminated as Barrett went 19-for-35 for no touchdowns and a pick against Oklahoma.

But, like in 2014 after the Buckeyes’ loss to Virginia Tech, Barrett has rebounded in a big way. While it is apparent that the five opponents faced since Oklahoma have been varying degrees of inferior competition, what cannot be dismissed is the fact that Barrett has thrown for more than 1,300 yards, 18 touchdowns and no--as in zero--interceptions. Tack on four more rushing touchdowns, and Barrett looks like one of the best quarterbacks in the NCAA. In fact, he leads the country in total passing touchdowns with 21 on the season.

Still, doubters remain, pointing out that the sub-par competition cannot be denied, and that Barrett can’t perform when it counts against some of the best teams in the country. Now, after a bye week, however, the senior quarterback has a chance to right these wrongs as the second-ranked Nittany Lions come to Columbus. It will be the staunchest defense Ohio State has faced all season, and will give the revamped offense the spotlight they have been looking for to show just how far they have come since Oklahoma.

“Practice has been very competitive. That is how we have been able to put together performances like this.”

-Defensive end Tyquan Lewis, via James Grega, Eleven Warriors

Like the offense, the Ohio State defense has made significant strides since its somewhat abysmal start to the season. Entering the year with a highly-touted defensive line, the loss of three starters in the secondary to the first round of the NFL Draft seemed something of an afterthought. However, after two games allowing more than 800 total yards passing, the Buckeyes’ defense found itself ranked dead last in the NCAA in passing yards allowed.

The only way to go was up at that point and, fortunately for the Buckeyes, they faced Army the following week. The Black Knights have now won two games this season without completing a single pass. Against the Buckeyes, Army had a relative passing frenzy, completing two passes for 19 yards. Still, it was better than what Ohio State had been allowing, and helped to improve the confidence of the young secondary. The Buckeyes continued to get better in this area, allowing 88 yards against UNLV, 92 against Rutgers and 16 against Maryland. The unit regressed against the Huskers Saturday, giving up 303 yards through the air, including two big passing plays, but the defense has found itself ranked 30th in the country in passing yards allowed--a huge improvement over just a few weeks ago. Credit not only good practice habits, but leaders on the units taking ownership for their improvement as a defense.

The Buckeyes are now set to face their most worthy adversary since Oklahoma in Penn State. With Heisman frontrunner Saquon Barkley at running back, and Trace McSorley at the helm, it will be a tough test for an improving defense. But with an experienced unit up front and a consistently-improving secondary, the Penn State offense itself may be facing its most staunch opponent of the season.

“We reflect back to 2014 quite a bit. But I think we’re getting our own identity, something that’s different than 2014. You hear Coach talking about great practices. I think that’s building our confidence to go out here on Saturday and play well.”

-Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

The Ohio State Buckeyes have experienced a very perceptible shift in their offensive performance over the past five games. While it is easy to believe that this team is the same one that lost to Oklahoma just a few short weeks ago, the players and coaches on offense think differently. This change is not simply the result of playing lesser opponents, nor is it something transient that can evaporate on a whim.

No, the changes that have occurred on the offensive side of the ball are the result of a shift in responsibility among the play callers. With Urban Meyer, Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day sharing responsibility in a coherent and methodical way. This structure is in sharp contrast to the 2015 and 2016 structures in which it often was not apparent who was actually in charge of calling plays on the field. The result was an offense that never really got off the ground, and a quarterback whose considerable skills were masked by a total lack of flow consistency coming from the coaching staff.

Now, Wilson and Day have revitalized the offense with new packages that fans haven’t seen before. Barrett does look different, and he is using his personnel much more wisely than he has in the past. The offensive line is dominating the front-seven of opposing defenses. Receivers have finally found a rhythm with their quarterback. The whole unit has upped its tempo, making it difficult for opposing defenses to get set with the right personnel on the field. And practices have become much smoother, contributing more and more to solid and consistent play on game day.

This type of sustained dominance looks a lot like the offense of 2014, which, even with the loss of Barrett to injury against Michigan, never stopped rolling behind Ezekiel Elliott and Cardale Jones. The team seems to grow stronger each week and, with a balanced run-pass threat, could be one of the best offenses at Ohio State in recent memory.
