Ohio State had a host of highly touted prospects on campus this weekend who were able to take in their thrilling comeback victory over Penn State. One of those standouts came in the form of '20 QB Jack Miller, a pro-style passer that attends Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Arizona.

All indications are that the 6-foot-4, 210-pounder enjoyed the trip to Columbus and that shouldn't be a surprise. In fact, according to Jeremy Birmingham of LandOf10.com, there was talk of Miller possibly shutting things down. Obviously, that ended up not being the case at Miller held off on making a pledge to the Buckeyes and will instead make more visits in the coming months.

However, what Miller did reveal to Birmingham in the brief chat was that Ohio State was indeed the leader in his recruitment. The Grand Canyon State prospect also stated that he will be back on campus in the spring or the summer. After that trip, Miller said he will then announce his commitment afterwards.

So, all-in-all, the Buckeyes are in a very good position for what looks to be one of the very best signal callers in the 2020 recruiting class — despite it being very early. Miller is currently penciled in as the 47th overall player in his class by 247Sports. Furthermore, the Firebirds leader also is slotted as the very best pro-style QB and the second highest graded player from the state of Arizona.

Gordon one to watch


Another prospect that was on campus this weekend to see the Buckeyes nail-biting victory over the Nittany Lions was '19 QB Andre Gordon of Sidney (OH).

The thing is, he's not JUST a quarterback, he's much more, and that's why Ohio State and other programs across the country are treating him accordingly. Gordon, a 6-foot-2, 185-pounder, is also a combo guard on the basketball floor that has even acquired offers to go that route at the next level.

As expected, Ohio State has both Urban Meyer and Chris Holtmann targeting the two-sport star and this past weekend. Gordon got an opportunity to see both sides of the program despite coming as a basketball visitor and he revealed to Alex Gleitman of 247Sports that "it was great."

"I got to meet the staff and the game was pretty fun. It was a successful weekend!," the Ohio prospect told Gleitman.

Despite getting looks from plenty of programs on both the gridiron and hardwood, Gordon isn't sure which path he is going to take yet. Gordon told Gleitman that his options are open and he isn't set on what he is doing yet.

The CFB Playoffs debuted this week and the Buckeyes remained and was slotted at the #6 spot in the initial rankings. This is the perfect spot for the Buckeyes as they continue to play at a higher level as they continue to build their resume after the heartbreaker against Oklahoma. Their offense has gelled together and they continue to scorch opposing defenses to earn style points to place them into further consideration for another CFB Playoff berth.

This week, the Buckeyes travel to Kinnick Stadium as they look to continue their hot streak after their miracle comeback by J.T. Barrett and his brothers on defense. They erased an 18-point deficit and beat the then #2 Nittany Lions in one of the wildest games of the season, and most likely the best game of the year so far.

Blackout at Kinnick Stadium

This game will pit #6 against an unranked Iowa team that could catch the Buckeyes sleeping after their dramatic win at home. A potential hangover after battling to survive is possible when away from the confines of Columbus, and I am positive that the coaches have drilled that into their heads as they prepare to face another scrappy Iowa defense. This is one of three of the trap games the Buckeyes will have.

This uniform choice will ignite this crowd and give the team added motivation to the fire. It would be a major letdown if the Buckeyes fall in this contest and it would all but ruin their chances of making the CFB Playoffs.

If Urban Meyer and company wants another shot at redemption, he must get 110% from every unit, especially for his Special Teams unit who have been the Achilles heel so far this season.

Not so Special Teams

In what has been the most unfortunate surprises for the team this season, Special teams has been flat-out bad this season. This is Coach Meyer’s unit and they have not been playing to his or the Ohio State standard and other teams have been taking advantage of this weakness and they have been making them pay for 8 consecutive games.

Per Ohiostatebuckeyes.com, Ohio State has been decent on kick and punt returns so far this season. They have 19 for 535 yards and 15 for 73, both without any TD’s. Their only potential TD was turned away after another constant theme, penalties negated and wiped it away.

Opponents have scorched the Buckeyes unit in kick returns. They have 52 total kick returns for 988 yards and I believe 2 TD’s, a 100-yarder to Nebraska and the 97-yarder on the opening kickoff captured above. On punt returns, this unit is flawless giving up zero yardage on returns. One was blocked and Chrisman has shanked a couple, but they are not as bad as the kickoff unit.

If they want to win and win comfortably, they need to improve as a whole unit. The angled kickoffs seem to be putting them out of position, but we will see what improvements will be made.

The Barrett Gang

The J.T. Barrett show will continue to be the primary show followed closely by the Silver Bullets. Barrett has showed his resolve by performing against Penn State. This game will not have the flash, but it will be another hard fought contest against Josey Jewell, who has been the heart and soul of the Hawkeyes defense.

Barrett will be challenged offensively while facing the #12 scoring defense in the country after facing the top-ranked defense. Ohio State ranks 18th in the nation, so the drop off isn’t that severe, but it should be another good, hard-fought contest. The margin in PPG is small with Iowa holding the edge giving up 17.4 PPG while Ohio State is giving up 18.3 PPG. Iowa has surrendered 15 TD’s and 11 FG’s to Ohio State’s 20 TD’s and 2 FG’s.

Both teams are active in the sack department with the Buckeyes holding the small edge with their 20 sacks to Iowa’s 19. Ohio State’s defense is disruptive and is #2 in the nation in TFL’s and 12th in total defense.

Iowa’s offense will need to scheme against the Silver Bullets in order to prevent another Buckeye blowout. The same goes for their defense. They need to play disciplined in order to stop Barrett and his playmakers. The Buckeyes will look to establish balance into their gameplan to confuse Jewell.

Prediction:

I feel like the momentum will be too much to handle for the Hawkeyes and that they run into a buzzsaw even though they are at home. Ranked 6th in the CFB Playoffs, the Buckeye will take it as a slight, but they are in the correct place, but that won’t stop them from coming into this game angry and motivated. Barrett will continue his hot streak, but the RB’s will shine the most to prove a point.

Let’s face it, expectations aren’t super high for the Buckeye basketball team coming into the 2017-2018 season. However, as the team preps for their exhibition game on Sunday versus Wooster, and their official season opener against Robert Morris on Nov. 10, there are bright spots for new head coach Chris Holtmann’s young squad.

One of those bright spots is apparently true-freshman Musa Jallow. Over the summer, Jallow reclassified from a 2018 prospect to a 2017 prospect so that he could be a part of Holtmann’s first class in Columbus. The 6’5 guard might not yet be able to vote, but reports are that he is already more than capable of holding his own physically with more seasoned college players.

So much so, that Holtmann had to convince a recruit’s parent watching practice recently that Jallow actually was only 17. The head coach credit’s Jallow’s dedication, especially to his diet, for allowing him to compete at the collegiate level so quickly.

At Big Ten Media Days, senior forward Jae’Sean Tate also talked up the 17-year-old. “He’s the best rebounder we have at this point,” Tate said. “He crashes the glass like nobody I’ve ever seen and he always gets his hands on it.”

So, while this might not be the most successful season in terms of wins and losses for Holtmann and his team, it should be successful in getting the talented group ready to compete in future seasons. However, when you consider that last year’s Buckeye team lost eight games by two possessions or less, this year’s iteration might not be as far off as we are all projecting.

As is always the case under Kirk Ferentz, the Iowa Hawkeyes are a “pro-style,” hard-nosed football team that will look to grind out long drives on the ground, dominate time of possession, and keep the score as low as possible. For this strategy to be successful, the Hawkeyes must be able to control the line of scrimmage, whether they have the ball or not.

Based off of what we have seen thus far this season, that will likely be a tall order against both Buckeye fronts. While quarterback J.T. Barrett deservedly got most of the headlines following Saturday’s historic victory (including from us here, here, here, here, here, and here), the OSU defense, and specifically the defensive line, were just as instrumental in the comeback as the fifth-year senior signal-caller.

Despite the kick-coverage team and an untimely turnover putting the Buckeyes in a quick 14-point hole, the Silver Bullets held the Nittany Lions to just 2.6 yards per rush on the game, including 14 tackles for loss.

Conversely, despite odd spells of absence from leading rusher J.K. Dobbins, the OSU rushing attack more than doubled the vaunted Penn State ground game (201-91), even though the Buckeyes trailed until the last 1:48 in the game. In fact, Dobbins was just three yards away from equaling PSU’s team output, and Barrett actually bested the Nittany Lions by four yards.

If Iowa is going to use its traditional strategy of keeping games close and playing “smash-mouth football,” they are going to need either an extraordinary effort to beat the Buckeyes at their own game, or for the Buckeyes to come into Kinnick Stadium on a post-comeback high, unprepared for the task at hand.

At this point, neither seems likely.

When Urban Meyer got to Columbus, he quickly began molding the Buckeye program in his own image, and one of those changes was to try to get as much attention on his program as possible. One of the ways that he did that was to embrace primetime games, breaking the long held OSU tradition of noon kickoffs.

However, as the status of Ohio State’s program has continued to climb, they are a coveted draw for whatever television network has the rights to their games, meaning that more and more, the Buckeyes are playing under the lights.

While undoubtedly Meyer enjoys the exposure and recruiting advantage that primetime games allow, the coach has been vocal lately about the strains that the games, especially increasingly on the road, put on student athletes. It’s all about the brotherhood.

Another week, another hype trailer released. This time, the creative minds at Ohio State gave us a refresher of Saturday’s big win against Penn State.

Highlights of fans storming onto the field, as well as the locker room speech from coach Mick Marotti on how the team will prevail against the Nittany Lions made the final cut for the trailer.

Additionally, this week’s trailer focused on the game-changing plays against PSU. Denzel Ward’s blocked punt, J.T. Barrett’s touchdown passes in the closing minutes of the game, and Sam Hubbard’s double tackle of Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley and running back Saquon Barkley were shown, before the phrase “This is Ohio State” splashes onto the screen in-between more highlight clips.

Ohio State takes on Iowa at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.

The Hawkeyes star tailback is headed for another career year.

Little has gone right for Iowa this season.

The 5-3 Hawkeyes are fourth in the Big Ten West and have already dropped three conference matchups. They had a chance to make an early statement against Penn State in Week 4, but lost on the final play. Since then, the floodgates have opened up.

Three years after appearing in the Big Ten title game, Iowa’s now in danger of missing postseason action entirely.

But for all that’s gone wrong, it’s star running back Akrum Wadley that continues to be the Hawkeyes consummate bright spot.

The senior out of New Jersey is coming off a breakout year that saw him compile nearly 1,400 total yards of offense and 13 touchdowns. While he probably won’t surpass those numbers at his current pace, that says more about the team than it does of his abilities.

Take a look at how Wadley’s fared thus far.



The production of a year ago may not be there, but Wadley’s impact is still felt.

Iowa’s offensive line hasn’t been able to get a consistent push this season. They’re routinely beat off the ball and it’s affected their standout tailback’s play. It’s why he’ll likely set a career-high in receiving yardage in his final go ‘round in college.

Regardless, Wadley’s averaged a solid four yards per carry, has found the end zone almost 10 times, and comes up big when Iowa needs him to.

With Penn State in town, Wadley put on a show alongside fellow stud back Saquon Barkley. He racked up 155 yards and a pair of scores, not to mention a jaw-dropping catch-and-run that kept the Hawkeyes in the game.

Part of what makes No. 25 so special is his versatility.

Similarly to Barkley, Wadley can be the workhorse or he can split out of the backfield as a receiver. His size and innate ability to make something out of nothing are why he’s indispensable in Iowa City.

And Wadley proved as much during his best outing of the year to date, courtesy of in-state rival Iowa State.

Not only did Wadley turn into a video game single-handedly tie things up in the waning moments, he literally ran over or around half of Iowa State’s defense.

This has been the theme throughout Iowa’s up-and-down season.

Wadley can’t always rescue the Hawkeyes, and that’s the main problem. They’re just not a well-rounded group and a porous offensive line doesn’t do them any favors.

So count on Wadley making more plays on Saturday. It’s what he does and it’s what he’ll continue to do.

How much will he impact the final score? That’s a different story.

The good news? The Buckeye offense has a lot of other ways to hurt teams.

Lost in the Ohio State football team's skyward trajectory these last six weeks, between J.T. Barrett's hero-ball performances and the defensive line's ability to destroy opposing teams' will to carry on, is that the Buckeyes haven't been a particularly explosive offensive team in 2017. That might seem surprising, given a) the highlight reels of players like J.K. Dobbins and Parris Campbell and b) the sheer amount of points Ohio State has generated since the Oklahoma game, but it's true.

They're better than average, certainly; the Buckeyes rank 39th nationally in explosive pass plays and 48th in explosive run plays. But how can a team this good rip off such a pedestrian number of huge gains, relative to the rest of college football?

The answer, as usual, comes from the brain of SB Nation advanced stats wizard Bill Connelly: despite its popular acceptance as the best measure of how good an offense is, "explosive plays" is a thorny thing to parse out, and one as susceptible as anything to the ways that average can bury the real truth.


Simply looking at explosiveness, however you care to define it, misses this key step. Take the yardage of 20 plays from two (completely unrealistic) data sets, for instance:

Set No. 1: 80, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1

Set No. 2: 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5

In both sets, the offense gained 100 yards in 20 plays. In the first set, those 20 plays resulted in an almost certain touchdown (the 80-yard gain) and about six three-and-outs. In the second set, the offense converted on second-and-5 every single time and moved the ball at will. The median gain in Set No. 1 was one yard; in Set No. 2: five yards.

Need proof? Your three most explosive FBS offenses, through nine weeks: Mizzou, Oklahoma, Ole Miss.

So if the popular consensus for what makes an offense extraordinary is wrong, how do we figure out what makes it so? The truth, as usual, is way less sexy than the fiction: efficiency, baby.

The stats

Ripping off explosive plays is great, but unless that tendency is partnered with the ability to operate efficiently (and a defense that can ever get off the field), well, you're 3-5 Mizzou.

The good news for the Buckeyes is that they have been ruthlessly efficient with the ball since the sputtering disaster that was the Oklahoma game. Sophomore RB Mike Weber has been the paragon of efficiency minus explosion for the Ohio State offense: he's churning out 4.5 steady yards per carry, reliably moving the chains for Urban Meyer's offense in between J.K. Dobbins' home run attempts. (Dobbins, for his part, is up at 7.6 yards per carry—even when he's not ripping opposing defenses open, he's still getting chunk yardage.)

The Weber and Dobbins duo has its own sort of analogue in the passing game, where Parris Campbell (39 targets, 14.1 yards/catch, 410 rec. yards, 2 TDs) has functioned as the Buckeyes' rocket-boosted full-field threat, and K.J. Hill (53 targets, 9.4 yards/catch, 376 rec. yards, 3 TDs) has been the steady mover of chains that the Buckeyes can count on play after play.

Opposition research


Kirk Ferentz' Iowa team (5-3) has made its bones this year by choking the life out of other teams with the 16th-best defense in all of football. Their specialty has been—you guessed it—limiting the explosive potential of their opponents, a category where they rank ninth overall. All three of their losses, including to Saquon Barkley and co., have been by a touchdown or less; they held Penn State (No. 17 in explosive plays) to just 21 points in one of the season's most exciting games to date.

Middle linebacker Josey Jewell is the clear star of the Iowa defense, racking up 61.5 tackles (the best on his team by a full 22), including an astonishing 9.5 TFLs, 14 run stuffs, and four pass breakups. He's exactly the kind of do-it-all player than can shut down an opposing team's ability to break big plays. He's got help from defensive end Anthony Nelson, who boasts eight TFLs, six sacks, and four run stuffs to go with his outstanding 13.8 percent success rate (the percentage of successful plays the opposing offense gets when a given player is the one making the tackle).

What to watch for


Where the Hawkeyes fall short is exactly where the Buckeyes excel, though: efficiency. Iowa is a pedestrian 71st in defensive efficiency, while Ohio State is the 2nd-most efficient offense in all of college football. That's bad news for Kirk Ferentz and great news for Buckeye fans. It might take the Buckeyes a little longer to get going than in the other games where they were the clear favorites, but at the end of the day Iowa doesn't have the horses to get Ohio State's offense off the field quickly or painlessly.

J.T. Barrett has been shredding defenses with his arm and his legs of late, and there's no reason to think that won't continue against the Hawkeyes. Between Weber, Dobbins, and Hill, there are plenty of top-tier weapons to get the ball to and keep the chains moving. While Jewell and Nelson are talented enough that one or two ugly early turnovers wouldn't be surprising, the Buckeyes will more likely than not leave Iowa City with a three-score win.

The Buckeyes were named No. 6 in the first edition of the playoff rankings, but their title odds remain second best behind Alabama.

On Tuesday night, the first batch of College Football Playoff rankings were released. Compared to the AP Poll, there was a considerable amount of movement. But rankings weren’t the only big mover; the betting odds for some of the top teams changed, too.

On Wednesday, Bovada, one of the bigger sportsbooks on the Internet, listed new odds for a handful of the top teams in the country. Compared to Monday, there was a lot of fluidity.

After a big win against then-No.2 Penn State, the Ohio State Buckeyes had 3-to-1 odds of winning the title on Monday. However, their odds dipped a smidge after the releasing of the CFP rankings. Now, as of Wednesday afternoon, the Buckeyes hold 7-to-2 odds of winning the championship.

Even though Alabama isn’t the No. 1 team in the new rankings, they still own the top spot in the eyes of the oddsmakers. The Crimson Tide saw their odds move from from 5-to-7 on Monday, to 6-to-5 on Wednesday.

Georgia, the new No. 1 in the eyes of the playoff committee, saw the largest odds jump. Entering the week, the Bulldogs had an 11-to-1 booking for the championship; now, those odds are much shorter at 5-to-1.
