Before heading out to Portland for the PK80 Invitational, Ohio State look to stay undefeated, as they’ll host Northeastern this afternoon at Value City Arena.

After beating Texas Southern 82-64 on Thursday night, Ohio State looks to stay unbeaten before they hit the road for the first time this year. This afternoon’s contest against Northeastern is one of the non-bracketed games of the PK80 Invitational. Following today’s game against the Huskies, Ohio State will head to Portland for three games in four days starting on Thursday.

While Ohio State was in control for most of Thursday night’s game against Texas Southern, the Buckeyes did have to fend off a charge from the Tigers in the second half. Early in the second half, Ohio State was ahead by 18 points following a Keita Bates-Diop layup, but Mike Davis’ squad started to chip away at the lead after that bucket. Eventually Texas Southern was trailing by just two points with under seven minutes to go, but that was as close as the Tigers would get, as Ohio State rattled off 13-straight points to erase any doubt in the result.

Keita Bates-Diop continued his torrid start to the season, recording his third-straight double-double. The last Buckeye to start the season with three straight double-doubles was Evan Turner in 2009. Ohio State needed everything they got from Bates-Diop on Thursday, as freshman Kaleb Wesson was suspended due to failure to meet team expectations.

Ohio State has posted a 9-2 record against teams currently in the Colonial Athletic Association, but one of those losses did come to Northeastern. In 1985, the Buckeyes and Huskies met in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with Northeastern squeaking out a 76-74 win. The Buckeyes last played a team from the CAA back in 2014, when they beat James Madison 73-56 in the Buckeye Classic in Columbus.

It would be hard to blame the Huskies if they came into this afternoon’s game a little bit sluggish. On Friday night, Northeastern suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Stanford 73-59 in Palo Alto. The Huskies trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half, but an 11-0 run slashed the deficit to just two with five minutes to go, but that was as close as Northeastern would get. Sophomore Donnell Greshman Jr. came off the bench and scored a team-high 15 points in the loss.

Head coach Bill Coen is in his 12th year as Northeastern’s head coach, but during his time with the school the Huskies have only made the NCAA Tournament once. In 2015, Northeastern won the CAA Tournament, and put a scare into Notre Dame before the Fighting Irish eventually prevailed 69-65 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. During the 2014-15 season, Northeastern won 23 games, which is the most they’ve won under Coen. Since the tournament appearance, Northeastern posted an 18-15 record during the 2015-16 season, and a 15-16 record last year.

Numbers to know

9

There are a couple reasons why nine was such an important number for Ohio State in their last game. Not only did C.J. Jackson tie his career-high by dishing out nine assists in the win over Texas Southern, but the Buckeyes hit a season-high nine three-pointers on Thursday night. Ohio State’s previous season-high from behind the arc came last Sunday when the Buckeyes hit eight three-pointers against Radford.

16.7

Ohio State is finding success because of the way that they are rebounding the basketball so far this season. The Buckeyes are 14th in the country with a +16.7 rebounding margin. A big chunk of that average rebounding margin came in the season opener against Robert Morris when the Buckeyes out-rebounded the Colonials by 29. Since then Ohio State recorded 12 more rebounds than Radford last Sunday, and nine more rebounds than Texas Southern on Thursday night. Keita Bates-Diop is leading Ohio State with 11 rebounds per game.

10

Northeastern comes into this afternoon’s game with no players averaging 10 points per game. Instead of having a couple players who can fill it up on the score sheet, the Huskies spread the wealth, with seven players averaging at least seven points per game. The highest point total a Northeastern player has had during a game this season has been 15 points, which Tomas Murphy scored in the season-opening win against Boston University, and Donnell Greshman Jr. matched in the loss to Stanford on Friday.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

The senior continued his rise up the Ohio State all-time scoring list on Thursday night, with his 17 points moving Tate up to 40th place with 1,131 points. If Tate is able to match the 17 points he scored against Texas Southern, he’ll pass not only the 1,139 career points that Jamaal Brown scored, but also the 1,147 points Frank Howard scored during his Buckeye career. Tate also added seven rebounds against the Tigers, and is just 16 rebounds away from 600 boards for his career.

Micah Potter

The Buckeyes got a boost down low with the performance from Micah Potter on Thursday night. The sophomore bested his previous career high of 13 points, which he posted last season against N.C. Central, by scoring 17 points against Texas Southern. Potter could be in store for another big game today, as Northeastern had some trouble dealing with the size Stanford threw at them on Friday night.

Northeastern

Devon Begley

The guard is the lone senior on Northeastern’s roster. Last year Begley was named to the CAA All-Defensive Team after leading the conference with 48 steals. The senior is currently Northeastern’s leading scorer, averaging 9.3 points per game. Begley will be looking to rebound after hitting just two of his 11 field goal attempts against Stanford.

Tomas Murphy

The freshman forward from Rhode Island is already putting up strong numbers in his first year on campus. Murphy’s brother is Alex Murphy, a transfer from Duke and Florida, who averaged 14 points per game last year for the Huskies before graduating. Following his first two games of the year, Murphy was named CAA Rookie of the Week for his performances against Boston and Wentworth.

It’s not been a good season for the Fighting Illini.

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Okay, to be fair, this was never expected to be close.

Before kickoff, the line for the Ohio State-Illinois game had crept north of 40 points, a staggering number for any regular season contest, let alone an actual Big Ten game. S&P+ gave Illinois just a 3 percent chance of winning.

And just a few minutes after the opening kickoff, it wasn’t hard to see why.

The Buckeyes clobbered Illinois on Saturday. If it wasn’t for horrible weather, the margin probably would have been much worse. All of that isn’t particularly noteworthy.

But how Ohio State did it, and exactly where Illinois is right now, is interesting.

The Big Ten has some lousy teams in it this year, but if you squint, you can talk yourself into a potential pathway for improvement. Maryland has been recruiting better than nearly anybody in the Big Ten West, and if they can keep a quarterback upright for an entire season, it’s not hard to imagine them being solid. Rutgers and Indiana both have boasted above average defensive play at times this season. Purdue has a new coach, an exciting offense, and quickly rose to respectability.

But it’s really hard to talk yourself into anything with Illinois right now.

There’s no sugarcoating it. This Illinois team is really, really bad. Heading into yesterday’s game, Illinois’ S&P+ ranking (112) was worse than any other team on Ohio State’s schedule, and that includes UNLV, a historically hapless program that lost to Howard (!) earlier in the year.

They weren’t really even above average in any meaningful statistical category, and that lack of identity showed against Ohio State. Chance Crouch, a central Ohio kid himself, was 4-of-14 for a paltry 16 yards, never looking close to comfortable, as the Illini offensive line was overwhelmed almost from go. Almost every meaningful offensive play, and there weren’t many, came from underclassmen. Illinois couldn’t muster a single first down until late in the second quarter, after six consecutive three and outs.

The defense, which had managed to hold four teams in a row under 30 points, was overwhelmed at the point of attack as well, allowing the Buckeyes to gobble up 7 yards a carry basically whenever they wanted, and where one mistimed tackle would lead to a 30 yard gain. With an offense that wasn’t able to provide any support, any defensive gains quickly wilted. It was 28-0 after the first quarter, and honestly, it really could have been worse.

Look, when you’re on the road against a team with powerhouse talent, and you’re young and inconsistent, hey, sometimes you take your licks. And that’s basically how this series has gone recently, trophy game and all. Illinois hasn’t beaten Ohio State since 2007, and they’ve only kept the margin to 10 points or less just once over the last decade. It’s arguably been the least competitive series in recent memory among original Big Ten members.

At first glance, it seems like that shouldn’t be the case, no? But since that Rose Bowl bid in 2007, Illinois hasn’t won more than seven games in a season. They’ve made only three bowl games, none of any real import, and have struggled with development, leadership, and a real offensive identity.

It seemed like the entire department may have turned a corner with the hire of new athletic director Josh Whitman last year, but his major bet, the hire of Lovie Smith, hasn’t come close to paying dividends, and because of the financial risk, it’s not like they can cut bait this year, even though recruiting reinforcements aren’t exactly coming, at least in this class.

Maybe the Smith hire will somehow work out in the end. I still think, in retrospect, it was a very defensible move, and coming in and immediately dismissing Bill Cubit was, in my humble opinion, a good and bold decision, showing that Illinois had higher ambitions than the Heart of Dallas Bowl...maybe, if they got the right divisional crossover games.

But for programs that haven’t enjoyed any real football consistency since I was born, that margin of error is very small.

Illinois isn’t on Ohio State’s schedule again until 2020, much to the chagrin of anybody who is emotionally invested in the Illibuck, so maybe they can get things turned around before the next meeting. Even with their administrative and recruiting challenges, there’s not really a good reason why Minnesota or Northwestern should just expect to wake up and automatically have better talent than the Illini. The team should not be *this* bad.

One of the really positive developments in the conference over the last few seasons has been the growth in coaching staffs, and with the significant improvement at the bottom end of the league. The worst teams in the Big Ten aren’t nearly as bad as they were earlier. That helps Ohio State, and anybody else that has playoff or New Year’s Six aspirations. Having a team like a Northwestern hang around the periphery of the Top 25 actually matters for the purposes of the selection committee, after all.

But man, Illinois is...not close to that level right now. I’m not sure if what I saw last night would have been a bowl team in Conference USA. And if the Big Ten wants to continue to take another step. it’ll need all schools to achieve a base level of competence and quality that Illinois isn’t reaching right now.

Hopefully they get things turned around, especially in time for the next meeting. That goofy turtle trophy would be more interesting if these games were more compelling.

We’ve seen Illinois occasionally be great. We know it’s possible. Can they become consistently okay? It’s been a while since we’ve seen that.

The postseason rematch with the Badgers is set.

Just in case this fact got lost in all the hubbub of last night: Ohio State’s season, officially, got one game longer.

No matter what happens against Michigan, Ohio State will win the Big Ten East division and will head to the Big Ten Championship Game in Indianapolis against the West division champs, the undefeated Wisconsin Badgers.

Kickoff is currently set for 8:17 PM on Saturday, Dec. 2.

It seems a little strange, given the level that Ohio State has dominated the conference over the last few seasons, but this will just be Ohio State’s third appearance in the title game. The Buckeyes lost to Michigan State in 2013, and memorably demolished Wisconsin in 2014. The Badgers have been a mainstay in the event, as this will be their fifth appearance.

A win would tie Ohio State with Wisconsin and Michigan State for the most Big Ten Championship wins with two. But far more importantly, it could vault them right back into the College Football Playoff, depending on whatever else happens in the sport.

Ohio State has a big game that you might have heard about this coming Saturday, and they’ll need to win that one to remain in the Playoff chase, and also because that’s the Michigan game, but all indicators right now point to Ohio State/Wisconsin being a classic as well.

It’s been a bit of a roller coaster season, but despite a few hiccups along the way, Ohio State has put themselves in position to take home some big trophies if they can take care of business against some very talented teams.

For more information on the Big Ten Football Championship Game, including travel arrangements, you can go here.

The Buckeyes were projected to win big. They delivered.

The rain couldn't stop Ohio State's offense, and neither could Illinois.

In the last game at Ohio Stadium for 19 Buckeye seniors (and potentially another handful of underclassmen), Urban Meyer's squad cruised to a 52-14 victory over Lovie Smith's Fighting Illini. It was as businesslike a win as you could ask for—at no point did the Buckeyes really struggle, trail, or look out of sorts—and Ohio State locked up a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game with the W.

Let's break down some of the top performances from Saturday's win, the ninth straight for the Buckeyes over the Illini.

Blue chip stocks

Mike Weber, RB: Is the redshirt sophomore trying to show NFL scouts a little something? It's sure felt that way these last two weeks, as Weber has chewed up consecutive defenses to the tune of 270 yards and four TDs total. He got 108 of those and a pair of scores against the Illini on Saturday, including a 43-yard sprint to pay-dirt late in the first quarter.

Great to see Weber finally looking healthy. That's his 3rd 40-plus yard touchdown run in the last two weeks. pic.twitter.com/Cs3FssfKld

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) November 18, 2017

There's a decent chance Weber decides to test the waters of the NFL Draft this spring rather than face another season's risks for injury and split carries. We'd be sad to see him leave, but the way he's playing since returning to full strength would make him a hard guy to pass up if you're an NFL owner.

Binjimen Victor, WR: Earlier this week, we wrote about the matchup nightmare that Victor poses for just about every team, including Illinois. He made us look smart on Saturday. The sophomore wideout found the end zone twice, somehow reaching the ball across the goal line while being tackled by the neck in the opposite direction toward the end of the first quarter, and connecting with Dwayne Haskins for a pretty score in the fourth.

J.T. Barrett connects with Ben Victor for career TD pass pic.twitter.com/tXA8HQswlj

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) November 18, 2017

The two scores—a career high for Victor—were part of an overall three catch, 39-yard day. He's got at least another year left in the Scarlet and Gray, and a few more games in 2017 to wreak havoc on opposing secondaries. If that doesn't brighten your day, I'm not sure what can.

Solid investments

J.T. Barrett, QB: Barrett didn't get to spend much time padding his stats on Saturday, since the team played so well that he got yanked before halftime. (He later returned for a single series in the third.) But it was time well-spent nonetheless, as it saw Barrett throw for his 100th and 101st career touchdowns. The greatest QB in program history got to walk off in the rain a winner. For all his struggles, it's heartbreaking to know that we'll never again see this guy take the field at Ohio Stadium.

Thanks for the memories, J.T.! pic.twitter.com/nccDHvAncp

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) November 18, 2017

Jonathon Cooper, DL: Cooper is considered one of the future stars on a Buckeye defensive line that's made a habit of churning them out. He had a decent day in relief on Saturday, coming up with a pair of sacks all on his own. This is what the next few years might look like for opposing QBs with Cooper lining up against them; we're honestly pretty okay with that. Check out the dang wrestling move here:

Going to see a lot of this from Jonathon Cooper next season pic.twitter.com/POVmn8NKxG

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) November 18, 2017
Junk bonds

Michigan. Y'all get a load of the Wolverines on Saturday? Woof.

Buy/Sell

BUY: J.T. Barrett's large wooden son.

And the Turtle stays in Columbus pic.twitter.com/FIafLUTSiT

— Matt Brown (@MattSBN) November 19, 2017

BUY: Next week's game's coast potential. We know, we know: when you face off against a rival, you're supposed to throw the records out. But as mentioned above, Ohio State's Hate Week opponent is, uhhh, not very good. They're a mess at QB, they've lost to teams they were supposed to handle, and they just can't seem to stay ranked. Even in Ann Arbor's Big House, this one might be over by halftime.

MotS&G Illibuck stays in Columbus

In Columbus, on their last home game for the season, J.T. Barrett and the other seniors on the roster looked for a perfect send-off from friends, families, and coaches before heading to Ann Arbor to cap off their rollercoaster regular season.

The game began with Ohio State taking the first possession of the game and it really did not take long for the Buckeyes to impose their will against the Illini. Their main objective was to run into the defenses teeth and they definitely made that happen. By the time the game ended, after all the smoke, the Buckeyes ran all over the defense and registered 325 rushing yards for 4 TDs.

Mike Weber proved that he is healthy once again and for the second consecutive game, he went over the 100-yard mark again after busting through for a 43-yarder to essentially put the game further out of reach. Weber also notched another game where he scored multiple times.

Dobbins and Barrett combined for 84 yards, with a TD a piece. After their day was done Antonio Williams came in for relief duty and he ran with determination and power before finishing the game with 19 carries and 74 yards.

Barrett did not have a turnover this game, but he was an effective passer as he reached 101 total passing TDs in his career. He was 11 for 19 with 2 TDs hitting Victor and Baugh for touchdowns. Once the game had been decided, the backups Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow got their chance for a few reps, and Buckeye nation got a snapshot at what should be one hell of a QB battle next season along with Tate Martell for the starting QB spot.

On the initial Haskins drive, he tried to take it past the first down marker, but he was hit hard and he fumbled the football and it was returned for Illinois’ first score of the game, effectively breaking the shutout. He was quickly benched in favor of Barrett for one last drive and after he finished the drive, Burrow was put in and he also fumbled but was able to recover before punting the ball.

Illinois score with a younger QB after Crouch went down with an injury and he made the most of his shot because, on the first play, he rushed for a 9-yard score. The backups got a lot of work, but they showed a lot of promise.

With the Buckeyes rolling, the game ended with a 52-14 victory as they have retained the trophy for another year. Another bit of good news is with TTUN losing to Wisconsin, Ohio State have secured the BIG 10 East division spot for the Conference Championship Game, but the next opponent on the docket is TTUN, which should be interesting, to say the least. For now, enjoy the win. Go Bucks.

Perhaps the greatest QB in Ohio State history has played his last game in Columbus. How will you remember him?

COLUMBUS—The stadium was mostly empty at this point. Ohio State’s showdown with Illinois ceased being competitive around the ten minute mark, and a windy downpour drove most of the fans to warmer, drier climates.

But those who were smart enough to bring ponchos were rewarded, as the seconds ticked down on Ohio State’s 52-14 win. J.T. Barrett, with his teammates, triumphantly hoisted one of the more ridiculous of the Big Ten rivalry trophies, and then plunged towards the crowd for high fives and hugs.

One of the greatest quarterbacks in Ohio State, heck, Big Ten history, then headed off the field, never to play in his home stadium again.

Barrett’s final legacy still has room for a few more chapters. After all, there’s another game against Michigan, another opportunity for a Big Ten title, and perhaps, despite those two losses, a trip to the College Football Playoff.

But there’s enough there to still tell a good story, no matter what happens the rest of this season.

During the game, Barrett threw his 100th, and then 101st, touchdown pass. He’s the proud holder of 35 different Ohio State and Big Ten records. He cracked the top five in Heisman voting as a freshman, and could crack at least the top ten this season. He’s won every meaningful award that the Big Ten gives. A decade from now, when somebody logs on to Sports-Reference.com, they’re going to see eye-popping numbers, a slew of records, and likely conclude that Barrett is one of the most celebrated players in Ohio State history. And hey, maybe he will be.

But we also can’t forget that Barrett is one of the only college football players to approach such rarified feats while also facing skepticism from his fanbase, from the national press, even to the point where credible people, not just shrieking message board posters, could call for his benching. You can even find some of those words on this website.

After all, Barrett had to battle to even secure his starting job the year after he laid the groundwork for a national title run. His flaws, perhaps due to his health, or coaching, or the composition of the roster around him, and yes, even his own execution, were often laid out front and center to the sporting world in a different way from a lot of other players.

Being a 5th year senior college QB is a bit of a weird position. You need to be good enough to continue to hold on to a starting job and perform at a high level, but you either need to have health concerns, or have just enough flaws where bolting early for the NFL wouldn’t make sense.

If one was say, a Barrett skeptic — a group that does still exist on the internet — you could point to the struggles with throwing deep passes or the occasional departures from perfect velocity. You could point out that Barrett’s gaudy rushing numbers were more a product of repeated carries, perhaps occasionally to the detriment of the rest of the offense, rather than the game-breaking athleticism of say, a Braxton Miller or a Terrelle Pryor. You could say that the success of Ohio State’s offense was more a reflection of the playmakers around him, rather than the QB himself.

And to be totally frank with you, I don’t think all of those arguments are wrong. And if that is how you want to remember Barrett, that’s your choice.

A more pro-Barrett perspective would be to recognize his excellent ability to make the right read from read option plays, or his awareness and body control allowing him to be a fearsome short yardage runner. You could remember his decisionmaking and distributing ability at his best, limiting turnovers and making the efficient decision, time and time again. And, that while there wasn’t the eye-popping WHOA moments of maybe other QBs, he is above average in nearly every on-field component of being QB. If he was a basketball player, maybe he’d be a white shooting guard at Duke that played lockdown defense that everybody hated. That is a complement.

You could remember him for his leadership, a trait that’s hard to really evaluate as an outsider. But we do have clues. After all, he’s the first three-time Ohio State captain ever. Urban Meyer and his teammates repeatedly gush over him.

And Ohio State wins under him. This recent run is one of the best in Ohio State history, with a national title, another playoff bid, a demolishing of a good Notre Dame squad in a big bowl game, and a mastery of the Big Ten. As of right this second, they have a chance to win the conference and perhaps make another playoff.

I can’t speak for anybody else. I can’t sit here and tell you how to fan. But for me, I can say that I’m happy that I got a chance to see him play. I’ll remember all the wins, the explosive offenses — which I’ll never take for granted after the Tressel era. I’ll remember how people whose opinions about football I respect praised him constantly. And yeah, I’ll remember stuff like this too, which was exciting and goofy and everything all at once.

There will be other good quarterbacks at Ohio State. There will be many other highly recruited ones, ones with physical gifts that may exceed Barrett’s. There may be players that will produce more SportsCenter highlights. There might even be players that win almost as much.

But J.T. Barrett’s don’t walk through the door very often. I can’t speak for anybody else, but once the years pass, and the memories of the less-than-perfect deep balls fade, I’ll remember the accomplishments, which are legion. And I’ll remember standing on the sideline, freezing my ass off because I didn’t bring a proper raincoat, while Barrett, snug in his Ohio State rain jacket, shook his head and judged me for my poor sartorial choices.

I’ll remember him as one of the best.

What about you?
