The Ohio State rushing attack made life easier for J.T. Barrett versus Michigan State

J.T. didn’t have to do it all on Saturday.

After not being able to get the ball into J.K. Dobbins’ or Mike Weber’s hands against Iowa, Kevin Wilson made it a point early and often to get the ball to his two playmaking running backs — and it won them the football game. Wilson was able to get Dobbins into space, while also pounding them in between the tackles.

The dominant running game took the ball out of J.T. Barrett’s hands for the first time in a few games, which will be a good thing moving forward. The running game has always opened up the passing game in Urban Meyer’s offense, and Wilson got back to those roots against the Spartans.

• The offensive line was dominant on Saturday. Three of the four pressures they allowed came on RPOs, while only one came on a true dropback. They also did not allow a true sack on Barrett — the only one came on a bad snap over Barrett’s head.
• After not throwing one wide receiver screen against Iowa, Wilson got Barrett going early with one to J.K. Dobbins — who was lined up in the inside slot in the trips formation. The horizontal pass game opens up the middle of the defense and especially the safeties, who have to be aware of the perimeter.
• The multiple handoffs to the running backs — including Weber’s first long touchdown run — opened up Barrett to keep the ball on zone-read plays. As shown below, the defensive end crashed hard on the running back, leaving Barrett with the obvious and easy decision to keep the football and walk into the end zone.

• Dobbins showed terrific balance and leg strength on this run. Almost every single freshman running back in the country would have been stopped for a three-yard gain. Not Dobbins.

• This was a designed screen play out of trips, where Dobbins was able to have three lead blockers in front of him. Keep an eye on Parris Campbell in the inside slot. Campbell engages onto the first defender then drives him into a second defender, opening up a cutback lane for Dobbins to find the end zone. The receivers did a great job of blocking downfield against the Spartans.

• This was an egregious interception by Barrett. He had K.J. Hill in single coverage with a free safety — which is a win for Hill just about every single time. Instead of leading Hill and putting some air under the throw, Barrett puts it on a rope and underthrows it into the safety’s arms. Instead of a pretty easy touchdown, it’s an interception for Sparty.

• Barrett’s second interception was also on a play that shouldn’t have occured. Binjimen Victor has a height and wingspan advantage on every corner in the country, yet Barrett didn’t get enough air under the throw, which led to his second interception. If you throw it high to Victor, only two things can happen: A touchdown or an incomplete pass.

Four-star CB Christian Tutt will decide between Ohio State and Auburn today.

Ohio State currently boasts the No. 1 recruiting class in the 2018 cycle and could soon be adding to it. Four-star cornerback Christian Tutt (Thomson, GA/Thomson) is scheduled to make his decision later today at his U.S. Army All-American Game jersey ceremony and will be deciding between Ohio State and Auburn.

Tutt is seen as one of the top CBs in the class, coming in at No. 25 at the position in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and the No. 221 overall prospect in the entire class. The blue-chip recruit recently confirmed with Benjamin Wolk of SEC Country that he has narrowed his decision down to the Buckeyes and Tigers.

The U.S. All American is coming off an official visit to Auburn where he was able to witness firsthand the Tigers’ most impressive victory of the season, blowing out No. 1 Georgia. Needless to say, the overwhelming feeling is the visit couldn’t have gone any better.

Tutt also officially visited both Ohio State for the Oklahoma game earlier in the season. While the game didn’t produce a favorable outcome, the atmosphere in The 'Shoe during a night game has been enough to sway recruits in years past, so the end result isn’t a deal breaker.

With his official visits out of the way, it was widely expected that Tutt would make his announcement during his jersey celebration and the four-star took to Twitter following the visit to confirm his decision time.


The timing of the commitment doesn’t favor Ohio State, as his Auburn visit is fresh in his mind, and it is expected that the Tigers will be his school of choice. If Tutt does in fact choose Auburn, he will be the second blue-chip CB to dog the Buckeyes in recent weeks as four-star CB Houston Griffith elected to pick Florida State over Ohio State last month.

But all is not lost.

The Buckeyes already hold verbal commitments from four-star CB Sevyn Banks and three-star CB Marcus Hooker and are among those leading the way in five-star CB Anthony Cook’s recruitment, who they prefer over Tutt.

We have talked about Cook plenty on this site and while he has been viewed as an Ohio State lean for the majority of his recruitment, home-state school Texas has recently gained a lot of ground on the Buckeyes and are now seen as the favorite to land him in the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions.

The Buckeyes have found themselves in an awkward spot as they have long favored Cook, and therefore have dedicated more time in effort in recruiting him over other CBs in the class. If the Buckeyes were to miss out on both Cook and Tutt, they may need to go back to the drawing board if they view adding another CB as a necessity.

Update on Jackson Carman


If you follow Ohio State recruiting even the slightest bit, offensive tackle Jackson Carman (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) is a name you will certainly recognize. The five-star Ohio native has long been associated with the program, but the excitement between him and the Buckeyes has seemed to fade in recent months.

Carman made his way back to Ohio State’s campus this past weekend for the Michigan State game, marking his second visit to the school in three weeks. Carman officially visited the Buckeyes Oct. 27 for the Penn State game, and while Carman stayed true to himself and didn’t say much following the visit, it was reported that it went extremely well.

Fast-forward to this week and we have another update in his recruitment. Carman was expected to use his final official visit on Wisconsin, but following the weekend visit to Columbus, we have learned that visit will no longer occur. Josh Helmholdt of Rivals.com spoke to Carman recently and he confirmed he will no longer visit the Badgers, seemingly knocking them out of contention.


However, this new development has little to do with his recent visit to Ohio State and more with the fact that Wisconsin is unable to accept him as a mid-year enrollee. The good news is that there is now one less team the Buckeyes are contending with for Carman’s pledge. Ohio State is still seen as the overwhelming favorite, with 88-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Rankings, but nothing is a done deal.

• The Buckeyes continued the 2018 QB recruiting carousel by offering three-star QB Matthew Baldwin (Austin, TX/Lake Travis) following a weekend visit to the program for the Michigan State game. Currently, Baldwin is committed to Colorado State, but if four-star QB Emory Jones flips his commitment to Alabama, the Buckeyes could look to Baldwin as a back-up plan.

• Four-star Ohio State outside linebacker commit Dallas Gant (Toledo, OH/St. John’s Jesuit) received his jersey for the U.S. All-American Game Monday.

The offensive line wasn’t re-born Saturday. It’s been good all season.

Despite two games this season where the Ohio State offense has been utterly inconsistent, the offensive line has remained a high-performing unit through 10 games. Saturday, that high level of performance was apparent against a Michigan State defensive line which, previously, had allowed just 87 yards rushing per game, and had not given up a single 100-yard rusher all season. The Buckeyes, led by Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins, dropped 335 yards rushing on the Spartans, scoring four touchdowns in the process, and much of the credit for that performance has to go to the offensive line opening up gaping holes for the running backs.

The line has also played a crucial role in protecting J.T. Barrett, allowing just 15 sacks this season. Last year, the Buckeyes gave up 28 sacks over 13 games. Saturday, the line didn’t give up a single sack, and allowed just two tackles for loss.

Michigan State entered the game as the nation’s third-best rushing defense, but was completely outwitted by the combination of Jamarco Jones, Michael Jordan, Billy Price, Demetrius Knox and Isaiah Prince. The unit paved the way for Dobbins, who went past the 1,000 yard mark Saturday, matching Weber’s status from last season as a 1,000-yard rusher as a freshman.

The offensive line returned four starters heading into the 2017 season, led by center Billy Price. Only Branden Bowen, who was injured against Maryland and who was replaced by Knox, came into the season without a start. Price set a program record with his 51st-straight start Saturday, having started every game since his first game at right guard as a redshirt freshman. Earning first team All-American honors last season, Price was named to the Rimington Award watch list this year as one of the nation’s top centers--an honor taken home by former Ohio State center Pat Elflein last season.


The idea of the Miami Hurricanes football team’s newly emblazoned turnover chain was born just weeks before this season began, when cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph reached out to a local jeweler to see if he could make a rope chain for when players on his defense forced a turnover. Vince Wilfork happened to intervene, and recommended a Cuban link with an enormous “U” pendant. The finished product weighs in at 2.5 kg and is emblazoned with no less than 900 sapphires which make up the pendant. And the chain seems to have worked. Through eight games, Miami has forced 23 turnovers, including four Saturday against Notre Dame.

As it turns out, the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s wrestling team, which kicked off its season last week, has some bling of its own which, in many ways, is akin to the Hurricanes’ turnover chain--at least according to senior wrestler Kyle Snyder. The “pin chain” was referenced by Snyder in a tweet Sunday following the Buckeyes’ home opener versus No. 11 Arizona State, and appears to be a thick chain with a large scarlet and grey “O” pendant at the end. Snyder had just pinned the Sun Devil’s Austyn Harris to win the heavyweight match and cap off Ohio State’s win when the chain was broken out. Like Miami’s chain, Ohio State’s pin chain was designed by an assistant coach as a motivational tool to encourage more pins in matches.

The Buckeyes, who entered the season ranked No. 2 nationally won the opener by a 31-12 overall mark, earning wins on seven of 10 matches. Snyder is widely considered the best pound-for-pound wrestler in the country, and is seeking a third-straight NCAA championship in his senior season in Columbus. The Maryland native made waves when he became the youngest World and Olympic champion in US wrestling history.

It seems that all the top teams in the Big Ten have had an inexplicable loss this season that they simply want to forget about: Iowa trampling Ohio State at Kinnick; Penn State collapsing against the Buckeyes; Michigan getting blown out by Penn State (okay, maybe not everyone wants to forget that one). Now, Michigan State can add their own blowout defeat to the list. After clawing their way back into relevancy after losses to Notre Dame and Northwestern, the Spartans found themselves in control of their own destiny in the Big Ten East. All they had to do was beat Ohio State in Columbus in November as heavy underdogs. As dire as the situation sounds, it was one Sparty had been in before, and, on several occasions, come out on top.

Saturday was a different story, though, and Michigan State wound up on the receiving end of a severe beat-down from Ohio State following the Buckeyes’ loss to Iowa the week prior. It was the worst loss of Dantonio’s career at Michigan State, as the Spartans gave up 524 yards of total offense while themselves not even hitting the 200 yard mark.

On offense, the Buckeyes did an outstanding job defensively of outmaneuvering the Michigan State offensive line, pressuring quarterback Brian Lewerke and forcing inaccurate passes while hindering the running game. On the other side of the ball, the Spartan defense couldn’t seem to get lined up against a fast-paced Buckeye offense.

The loss didn’t look any better on tape, according to Dantonio, acknowledging that it was “one you want to burn.” The coach said that “everything seems like a scramble” when things are going against you, but that the team has to be ready to move forward and control what they can control in order to get to eight wins.

Turns out Vegas may have been onto something with that point spread, huh?

A week after getting blown out at Iowa, Ohio State picked themselves up off the mat and demolished Michigan State 48-3 in one of the most impressive wins of the Urban Meyer era.

Where the Buckeyes really stood out was on the ground. After giving running backs Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins a combined 11 carries against the Hawkeyes, the two exploded for 286 yards on 27 carries, with the team rushing for 335 yards total. It was a performance befitting the best rushing offenses of the Urban Meyer era in Columbus.

The rollercoaster that is the Ohio State football season had another exhilarating high on Saturday as No. 13 Ohio State Buckeyes knocked off the No. 12 Michigan State Spartans 48-3, in a game that wasn’t really even that close.

Coupled with a rash of highly-rated teams falling, the Buckeyes are... somehow... maybe... kind of still in the discussion for the College Football Playoff. However, for those conversations to happen, OSU needs to play like they did against MSU for the rest of the season, starting with the Illinois Fighting Illini this Saturday. The game will also serve as Ohio State’s 2017 Senior Day.

On Monday, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met with the media to discuss Saturday’s blowout win and what it means for the rest of the season.

• There will be 19 seniors participating in this Saturday’s Senior Day.
• Urban Meyer also apologized that he didn’t mention Veterans Day after Saturday’s game, and thanked all who have served, including his father and sister.
• The head coach said that he doesn’t think that there need to be any changes to the targeting rule. If the replay official makes a mistake, he or she should be penalized, but otherwise, the players should know better.
• Meyer said that you have to have a quarterback in every recruiting class, and you almost have to have multiple options just in case something changes with commitments.
• He also said that this season could see two quarterbacks in the upcoming class, but those types of discussions are difficult because of the nature of the position.
• Meyer said that there will be “zero conversation” about the College Football Playoffs in the building.
• Meyer repeatedly refused to discuss much about past games, this team’s legacy, Big Ten championships, or potential playoff berths. Instead just saying that they needed to play well on Saturday.
• When asked about Saturday being J.T. Barrett’s final game at the Horseshoe, he said that the fifth-year QB is a member of the Meyer family and the Buckeye family for the rest of his life, and Urban just wants him to have a good game on Saturday.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will be back on the gridiron this Saturday, Nov. 18 at 3:30 p.m. ET against the Illinois Fighting Illini. The Battle for the IlliBuck will be broadcast on ABC.

On Saturday, running back Mike Weber collected an abundance of real estate against the Michigan State Spartans. On his first carry of the game, he went for a 47-yard touchdown, igniting the Ohio State Buckeyes’ permanent lead against Sparty. By the time all was said and done, Weber scored again—this time from 82 yards—and ended the afternoon with nine carries for 162 yards.

That performance was still in the minds of many on Monday, as it was announced that the Detroit native received Big Ten co-offensive player of the week honors.


It’s the fourth time this season that a Buckeye has earned a Big Ten offensive player of the week honor. The other three occurrences happened in Weeks 1, 7 and 9—with quarterback J.T. Barrett being the one to earn a share of the accolade.

The Buckeyes are back in action at home this Saturday against Illinois. It’ll be the last home game of the year for OSU, and will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET.
