Two Buckeye rookies and a couple questionable additions could make the final rosters.

The NFL season is in Week 11, and the 2018 Pro Bowl ballot has been released and is now open for fan voting. Among some of the best players in the league, 20 former Ohio State stars were included on the ballot. There’s a large contingency of Buckeyes playing at the next level, and nearly half were at least acknowledged as options for the all-star game.

Of the 20, more than a handful are quite the stretch -- including one Buckeye who hasn’t even played in 2017 — but there are quite a few who could make the final roster. Granted, even those that are named to the 2018 Pro Bowl might not play depending on how playoff runs pan out, but it’s still an honor to get the roster spot.

You can VOTE for your favorite Buckeyes now through Dec. 14th.

Check out some noteworthy inclusions and the full list below:

Two Buckeye rookies

After seeing another impressive number of Buckeyes make their way to the NFL early in 2017, many went on to meet and/or exceed expectations. The two to have found the most established and prolonged success are Pat Elflein and Marshon Lattimore. Both made the Pro Bowl ballot in their first year in the league, and deservedly so.

The Vikings haven’t exactly had consistency at quarterback as of late, but center Pat Elflein is doing wonders in creating a cohesive offensive line. The Buckeye rookie hasn’t missed a single offensive snap during the 2017 regular season, which is not a stat that many players can (or will ever) tout.

Although he missed a couple games this season, Saints’ CB Marshon Lattimore is already in the running for Defensive Rookie of the Year. (Sound a little familiar? A la Bosa in 2016?) Through eight games played, he’s already claimed 36 total tackles (31 solo), 8 pass break-ups, 2 interceptions (including a 27-yard Pick-6) and a forced fumble. His coverage skills now speak for themselves, and quarterbacks are trying to avoid the Buckeye -- except for Jameis Winston that one time, and things got interesting.

Several rookies have been plagued by lingering injuries that would eventually sideline them for the remainder of the year, including: Raekwon McMillan (ACL), Malik Hooker (ACL/MCL), Gareon Conley (shin), and most recently, Curtis Samuel (ankle).

Linebackers and receivers

Six of the 20 Buckeyes on the Pro Bowl ballot stem from two position groups: linebacker (Darron Lee, Ryan Shazier, John Simon) and wide receiver. (Ted Ginn Jr., Terrelle Pryor Sr., Michael Thomas).

For the linebackers, Darron Lee has taken hold of the starting ILB position for the New York Jets in his second-year in the league. So far this season he’s tallied 67 total tackles, eight pass breakups, two sacks and two forced fumbles.

The do-it-all LB for the Steelers, Ryan Shazier, is on his way to having a career year in 2017. Finally healthy, the Buckeye has terrorized offenses to the tune of 69 total tackles, 10 pass breakups, three interceptions and two forced fumbles.

John Simon started the season as a bright spot for the Colts defense, but, as has been the luck with Buckeyes in Indianapolis, he suffered a neck stinger in Week 7 and has been a week-to-week decision ever since. Before his injury, Simon had 39 total tackles, 3.0 sacks and a Pick-6.

The Buckeyes have sent many wideouts to the NFL over the years, with one old and one young coming together on the Saints offense. Ted Ginn Jr. has found a late-career resurgence the past few seasons and it has continued that in New Orleans; he has 483 receiving yards and three touchdowns this year.

Michael Thomas, in only his second-year in the league, is already playing like a veteran, with 662 receiving yards and two scores thus far. He hasn’t made it into the endzone much this season, but he did record his first 100-plus yard game of 2017 in Week 10, and always finds a way to make a big play to extend the drive.

Things that make you go “Hmmm...”

Scrolling through the ballot, two names familiar to Buckeye Nation stood out in a rather surprising way. First was offensive tackle for the Detroit Lions, Taylor Decker. Don’t get me wrong, Decker had a great rookie season in 2016, but he was injured before the 2017 season even started — requiring surgery — and was only activated off the PUP list last week. I’m sure he would have made the ballot had he suited up this season, but he didn’t. So his inclusion is a bit odd.

Perhaps even moreso than Decker being a head-scratcher, was Washington wideout Terrelle Pryor Sr. being named on the ballot. Coming off his sole 1,000-yard receiving season (in Cleveland, mind you), Pryor has yet to find the same success by the hands of Kirk Cousins. He’s been seemingly phased out of the offense over the past few weeks, and has only claimed 240 receiving yards through Week 11.

Make sure your favorite Buckeye gets a spot on the final roster and VOTE.

Here’s the full list of Buckeyes on the Pro Bowl ballot.

Friday is considered the No. 3 DT in the 2018 class.

There’s only one more home game left in the 2017 season for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The time just flies by when you’re having fun.

Anyway, Urban Meyer has already had his weekly press conference, and we are now at the midway point of the workweek. That means OSU football is, once again, happening in just a few days. With Illinois coming to town, the Buckeyes will be playing more than just host to the football team from Champaign; they’ll be playing host to one of the country's best defensive recruits.

Friday visits on a Saturday

Defensive tackle Tyler Friday (Ramsey, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) will be coming to town this week to visit Ohio State. Midmorning Tuesday, he made the announcement on Twitter.

OSU official visit this weekend ‼️ #GoBuckeyes

— Big Smooth (@almighty_ty5) November 14, 2017

Friday is a member of the 2018 recruiting class, and is one of the more highly sought DTs. According to the 247sports composite, the New Jersey native is considered the No. 3 prospect at his position, the No. 2 talent in the Garden State, and the No. 64 prospect in the entire class.

Since joining the Big Ten, the New York area has become not only a big TV market, but a recruiting destination. Recently, the Buckeyes have gone to NJ to find their next star; back in 2013, Eli Apple committed to Ohio State after being a star at Voorhees (NJ).

But if the Bucks are going to get Friday, they’ll have to wrestle him away from other top programs. Currently, Michigan is seen as the real candidate to land the stud DT. Looking at the 247sports Crystal Ball, four of the six predictions point to Ann Arbor being the place Friday spends his college days. However, the latest prediction (added on Nov. 7) has been submitted as “foggy.” Could the upcoming trip to Columbus be a reason for that prediction?

Schools like Alabama, Penn State, UCLA, and Miami (FL) have already made offers to Friday. In total, 20 schools have put in the offer in hopes of getting the Don Bosco Prep prospect.

What would a program be getting in Friday? Well, there are video highlights of him posted to Hudl—and he looks like the real deal.

We’ll see what all happens on this visit, and we’ll keep you posted if any more news breaks.

Wray transferring to new high school

Max Wray (Franklin, TN/Franklin) already signed his letter of intent to be a Buckeye, and will be an early enrollee come January. His brother, Jake Wray, a member of the 2020 class, is seen a possible candidate to become a Buckeye—but that possibility may have gotten just a little bit tougher to fathom.

An article by Barton Simmons of 247sports stated that Jake Wray would be transferring from Franklin high school at the end of the semester. The new landing spot for Jake will be just outside of Atlanta at Marietta HS.

2020 four-star OT Jake Wray is leaving the state of Tennessee to play at Marietta HS next semester. He joins three other Top100 prospects out of the 2020 class on that roster: https://t.co/n88jFyrnZ3

— Barton Simmons (@bartonsimmons) November 14, 2017

The younger Wray brother won’t be the only star on the new team. Already a few other top-100 prospects are on the Marietta squad, according to 247sports. In addition to Ohio State, SEC programs Alabama and Georgia have already made offers to Jake. Of those future teammates who hold top-100 status, two of them are projected to go to Georgia, while the other one has Florida as a favorite.

Right now, the 247sports Crystal Ball has five votes in for the younger Wray—and all of them support the idea of him going to Ohio State. But those predictions were cast before this change of high schools.

Quick hits

• It was mentioned yesterday that the Buckeyes could be picking up a four-star cornerback in Christian Tutt. However, that didn’t happen; it was the Auburn Tigers who came out victorious in the recruitment of Tutt.

• Former Buckeye basketball forward Derek Funderburk has committed to NC State. Funderburk, who was dismissed from OSU in June by Chris Holtmann, is currently at a junior college, and will be eligible to compete with the Wolfpack in the 2018-19 season.

But, will it be enough to get them back in playoff contention?

Oh how the tangled web of college football rankings has changed since last the playoff committee met. Since then, three of the top-six teams lost (including Nos. 1 and 3), and the previously No. 13 Ohio State, whose playoff chances had been left for dead, suddenly has a pulse (albeit a faint one), after their 48-3 drubbing of formerly No. 12 Michigan State.

Now, having moved up a few spots, the Buckeyes sit at No. 9.

If the Buckeyes are to have any chance of booking a return trip to the College Football Playoff, they are going to need two things; 1) to win out against Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin (and preferably in impressive fashion), and 2) lots of chaos above them.

However, the third CFP rankings of the season should provide a glimpse as to what must happen for OSU to have a shot at the title.

The Buckeyes would need a lot of help to make their third appearance in the playoff.

“[The long shots] Ohio State [Current projection: No. 9. Playoff chance: 25 percent].”

- Cade Massey and Rufus Peabody, The Washington Post

As everyone pretty much knows by now, there’s little chance of Ohio State being able to make the College Football Playoff this season. That doesn’t mean that the possibility is completely out of the question, though. The Buckeyes simply need a lot of help to get there, including top teams in front of them in the rankings to lose. Some of it also comes down to where teams are ranked in tonight’s College Football Playoff rankings. And of course, at the end of the day, the best thing the Buckeyes can do after they smashed Michigan State is to keep winning and doing it in impressive fashion.

Urban Meyer’s squad faces Illinois and Michigan in the final two games of the season, the former coming at home in J.T. Barrett’s last home game with Ohio State. Then the team travels to Ann Arbor for The Game against arch-rival Michigan. All the Buckeyes need to do to clinch the East division is to beat the Illini and they’ll secure themselves a spot against currently-undefeated Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game.

“What’s better than beating your rivals and claiming a conference championship? There’s obviously one thing that tops it, of course, but there’s also a reason it’s not the primary objective for the Buckeyes when they show up for offseason workouts with a “Get to Indy” — and to the Big Ten Championship Game — message hanging in the weight room.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

Even with all of the hype surrounding the very outside chance that Ohio State can get into the playoff, Urban Meyer and his team aren’t having any of it - at least, not publicly. That’s because the goal has been the same all season: Win a Big Ten championship. The rest would theoretically take care of itself. Of course, the team is aware that fans expect national championships every season, and that expectations are always going to be high with Urban Meyer at the helm, but sometimes it’s about the way that they get the job done, and unfortunately, they haven’t been very consistent in that regard this season.

But even after losses to Oklahoma and Iowa, the Buckeyes still control their destiny in the Big Ten race, and have a comfortable hold on being the East representative in the Big Ten championship game against Wisconsin. If everything goes according to plan over the next two weeks, Ohio State will face off against the Badgers in Indianapolis, just like in 2014. And even if no playoff comes from it, they’ll have the chance to call themselves Big Ten champions - something that hasn’t happened often in recent years.

“And yet since 1988, Illinois has beaten Ohio State more times (nine) than anyone but Michigan (12).”

- Marcus Hartman, Dayton Daily News

Heading into the rivalry game against Illinois, Marcus Hartman of Dayton Daily News took a deeper dive into the series with the Fighting Illini and found a couple of interesting tidbits. The first, as seen above, was that other than Michigan, Illinois has beaten the Buckeyes more times than any other team since 1988. That alone is quite surprising on the surface, but they have historically always played Ohio State tough and obviously taken the win nine times since that mark.

The second stat is that the last five of those nine wins against the Buckeyes came on the road, meaning the Illini came to Columbus in 1992, 1994, 1999, 2001, and 2007 and stole a win from the Buckeyes. The 2007 loss is an easy one to remember for Ohio State fans, as the tandem of Juice Williams and Rashard Mendenhall was a nightmare for the defense that night and the Buckeyes were seemingly out of the national championship race after that (until they weren’t) and bumped from the top spot in the polls.

From Senior Day to Tuf Borland, Meyer talked about a lot leading into the Buckeyes’ penultimate regular season game

We’re coming down the homestretch of the Ohio State Buckeyes’ regular season. After flattening Michigan State on Saturday, Urban Meyer spoke to the media on Monday, as the Scarlet and Gray prepare for their final home game of the season.

Illinois is the focus on the gridiron, but Meyer spoke about a wide range of topics—ranging from the pitfalls of not recruiting quarterbacks every year, to the senior class, to personnel stepping up and making plays.

Let’s look back and breakdown the four biggest points from that Monday presser.

“You have to have one every year. That's setting yourself up for disaster if something goes on down the road. So you always have plan A, B, C and D. And we do.”

Recruiting is a wild ride. At one moment you have a recruit, the next, you don’t. With top-tier schools chasing top-tier talent, you need to have a backup plan just in case.

Meyer never came out and said names, but he made the point clear: you need to have a quarterback in every recruiting class.

Right now, Ohio State has a commit in four-star QB Emory Jones. However, the recruitment of Jones has been a wild one, as Alabama has a real shot at flipping the commit from the Buckeyes. As rumors picked up of a potential flip to Tuscaloosa, Ala., Ohio State recently offered another top QB in the 2018 recruiting cycle.

With what Meyer said on Monday, it appears that OSU will in some form or fashion have a QB in their ‘18 class. Who that QB will be remains to be seen. On the bright side, though, Ohio State will have one of the top classes in next year’s recruiting class, regardless of who comes into Columbus as the pass-slinger.

“We're very close to this group of seniors...it's very well documented the respect and love we have for these guys because it's the first time we've had a couple of fifth-year seniors who have decided to stay throughout their journey, and we're going to treat them right. And best way to treat them right is go win this game”

On Saturday, 19 members of this Buckeye team will be recognized on Senior Day. It’s hard to believe, but guys like Jamarco Jones and Tyquan Lewis will be playing in The Shoe for the last time.

J.T. Barrett is also on the Senior Day recognition list—even though I’m pretty sure he’s been the OSU quarterback since like 1998. In his span as Buckeye QB, he broke many records, and guided OSU into the position to be in two College Football Playoffs.

Additionally, there are some members of the team that have a classification of being fifth year members. Marcus Baugh, Michael Hill, Billy Price, Tracy Sprinkle, and Chris Worley are those guys—and it’s not too often you have this many players staying with the program for so long.

Ohio State is on the warpath, searching for their third trip to the playoffs. To get there, winning out is now a necessity, and they’ll need some help along the way. Meyer shouldn’t have too much trouble pulling out a win against Illinois, especially after seeing what this squad did to Michigan State a couple days ago.

Those seniors don’t get Michigan at home this season, but winning (and keeping) the Illibuck in Columbus isn’t too bad of a way to end a career at home.

“Their defensive line is really good.”

...but, even though Ohio State is the heavy favorite at home—they are a 30-plus point favorite—they still have to play the game. Remember, a few weeks back, OSU was favored over Iowa, and that didn’t really end well for the Buckeyes.

Illinois is a weird team. Their defense can hold their own, however, the team hasn’t won any games in the conference this season, and haven’t won a game since Week 2. In the last four losses, though, the winning team didn’t break 30 points. When the Wisconsin Badgers went up against Illinois on Oct. 28, they struggled to breakaway from the Illini, and managed to only win 24-10.

Historically, Illinois has given Ohio State some real scares. In the 2002 championship season, the Buckeyes were dragged into overtime against Illinois; in 2007, the Illini beat the Buckeyes in Columbus, sending the college football season into a deeper tailspin.

This season, the team from Champaign, Illi., has forced 16 turnovers, and recovered nine of them. They are one of the best fumble recovery teams in the Big Ten—so don’t be surprised if they get a recovery against OSU courtesy of a bad read-option.

“He's one of our most productive players on the team. Even when you see him not making a tackle he's usually creating enough chaos that someone else makes it. He's a stud. I love that kid.”

Tuf Borland has the name of an elite linebacker. Against MSU, his 11 recorded tackles backed that hypothesis.

Meyer mentioned how productive the redshirt freshman has been for this team. Last week, the linebacker duo of Dante Booker and Jerome Baker were out with injuries, but Borland stepped up and made plays. Depth was a real concern on this OSU defense entering last Saturday’s game, but Borland and Malik Harrison filled the voids.

Meyer said that he wanted to give the seniors a win in their last game inside Ohio Stadium. The play of Borland, if everyone else is still hurt in the land of LBs, may be a big factor to OSU getting that win. Illinois’ offense has had trouble moving the ball down field—and they haven’t gone up against a team like the Buckeyes.

But, back to Borland: If he’s been creating chaos for opposing offenses this early in his career, just imagine what he’ll be able to do at this point next season. He’s a name Buckeye nation should remember.
