LGHL Billy Price could be the best center prospect of the last decade

Billy Price could be the best center prospect of the last decade

Not a lot of centers get taken in the first round. Price could be one of the rare ones.

“I recently studied Buckeyes senior Billy Price and he’s one of the best center prospects I’ve seen in the past decade.”

-NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah, via Stephen Pianovich, Land of 10

Ohio State fans are familiar with the skills of offensive lineman Billy Price, and now, after Price won the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center and was selected as a first-team All-American, the rest of the nation is as well. The fifth-year senior is preparing for his 55th-straight start as a Buckeye in the Cotton Bowl later this month, but soon after, Price will be a hot commodity at next spring’s NFL Draft as one of the top offensive linemen in the nation.

“He has tremendous upper body torque, quick feet and outstanding awareness,” said Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com of the Ohio State prospect, who he considers one of the best center prospects in recent years. Jeremiah went on to say that he gave Price the same rating he did for Nick Mangold prior to the 2006 draft when Mangold was selected in the first round by the New York Jets.

Price followed in the footsteps of Pat Elflein, who moved from guard to center prior to his senior season at Ohio State, won the Rimington Trophy and was ultimately selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Jeremiah acknowledged that Price looks better on his tape from Ohio State than Elflein did a year ago.

Ohio State currently has two starting centers in the NFL: Elflein and Corey Linsley of the Green Bay Packers. Elflein has had an outstanding rookie year with the Vikings, having earned the starting spot back in training camp.

While there is a lot of buzz surrounding Price, there have not been a lot of centers selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Just nine centers have gone in the first round since 2000, including Mangold in 2006. Most recently, the Indianapolis Colts selected Ryan Kelly from Alabama with the 18th-overall pick in 2016.

“Vince Lombardi said winning was the only thing, but that would mean defeat is nothing, which misses the point. Defeat ruins the lives of some coaches, who hate losing more than they enjoy winning.”

-Bill Livingston, The Plain Dealer

Somehow, the Ohio State Buckeyes’ loss to Oklahoma early on in the season doesn’t seem so bad. Urban Meyer and crew managed to put together enough solid wins to overcome it and claw their way back in the conversation for the College Football Playoff. What crushes the souls of Ohio State fans, instead, is the crippling loss to Iowa following the elation of a massive comeback against Penn State; a loss that came late enough in the season to where the Buckeyes could not make a full recovery in the eyes of the committee.

That type of loss--one which has far-reaching effects beyond the game itself--has been rare in its level of excruciation, both under Meyer and for Ohio State in general. Under Meyer, the loss to Iowa is akin to the 2015 defeat at the hands of Michigan State which proved to be a fatal blow to the Buckeyes’ playoff hopes. What is unique about these two losses is how they are singular and defining points in the season. Both were unexpected losses when Ohio State was favored and which single-handedly derailed hopes of a championship. It was just the sixth loss in the Meyer era at Ohio State.

Meyer, however, has worked to train his players not to dwell on these painful losses. “E+R=O,” or “Event + Response = Outcome” is a common mantra among the staff and players. That attitude was evident this season as J.T. Barrett and crew bounced back to defeat Michigan in Ann Arbor in a rivalry game and went on to win the Big Ten Championship against Wisconsin. Now, the team has the opportunity to play a “southwestern” Rose Bowl against the Pac-12 champion USC Trojans. While some of the wins this season have been ugly, and the losses even uglier, the Buckeyes have shown a lot of resilience in their ability to bounce back from defeat.

Congrats to all of the 3,721 graduates who received their degrees from The Ohio State University yesterday! Sunday’s autumn commencement was the largest ever at Ohio State as students from 65 different countries received bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Sen. Rob Portman and University President Michael Drake spoke to the graduating class during the more than two-hour ceremony.

Among the more than 3,400 students receiving undergraduate degrees were 49 current and former student-athletes. The most recognizable names came from frontrunners on the Ohio State football and men’s basketball teams, including defensive end Sam Hubbard, offensive tackle Jamarco Jones, forward Keita Bates-Diop and forward Jae’Sean Tate. In total, 11 members of the football team, including seven starters, graduated Sunday. Hubbard earned Academic All-American honors this season, and has been an OSU Scholar-Athlete throughout his time with the Buckeyes. Tate graduated with a sports industry degree, and Bates-Diop finished with an economics degree. While Tate has no more eligibility remaining after this season, Bates-Diop can return for one more year with the Buckeyes.

In addition to football and basketball, two members of the women’s tennis team graduated Sunday. This senior class was the winningest class in program history with 102 victories. The unit made the NCAA Tournament four-years running, including a berth in the semi-finals in 2017, and earned consecutive Big Ten titles. Miho Kowase, who won Ohio State’s first NCAA Championship in doubles last year, graduated with a marketing degree, while Fernie Angeles-Paz finished with a finance degree.

Finally, from the men’s volleyball team, Miles Johnson graduated with a degree in economy, development and sustainability. Johnson was the 2016 NCAA Tournament MVP and part of the two-time NCAA Champion men’s volleyball team at Ohio State.

Congrats to all of the graduates, student athlete or otherwise, and best of luck in the future!

Holiday Greetings, Big Ten Basketball fans. My Big Ten Power Rankings, presented by ArcelorMittal, get tougher and tougher every week, and this week is no exception. It is impossible to ignore the play of Nebraska and Rutgers anymore. A buddy of mine on Twitter asked a great, albeit likely condescending, question that I feel needs to be addressed. The answer is a simple yes. Every team in the Big Ten this year is capable of beating a Top-15 team, and that is going to lead to an interesting conference season and tournament. That being said, I still have to put

What, you thought this was going to be simple?

Typically, college football recruits can’t actually sign anything binding until National Signing Day in early February. But this year is different.

In case you missed this, there’s an Early Signing Period this week, from Wednesday to Friday. And just about every college program, including Ohio State, is looking to lock up as much of their 2018 recruiting class as possible.

Ohio State currently has 21 players verbally committed for 2018, and many of those appear to be very solid, leaving limited drama for this week, or later in February. But if you expected a completely smooth last few days leading up to signing day, you’re going to be left wanting.

Here are a few of the names to be on the lookout for, Ohio State commits or targets, who could be flipping in the next few days.

Emory Jones

Here’s the biggest name on the list. Jones has been a long-time Ohio State commit, and the blue-chip QB would be one of the highest rated that Ohio State has ever signed. But he’s also taken plenty of official visits elsewhere, from Alabama to Auburn, and most recently to Florida and Florida State. Plenty of Crystal Ball predictions have been coming in, pegging Jones to the Gators, where he might have an easier path to a starting job, and at this point, it’d probably be considered an upset if Jones ended up sticking with Ohio State. The Buckeyes did add a commitment from three-star QB Matthew Baldwin though, so they won’t be completely without a QB.

Jaiden Woodbey

The five-star safety is another long-time commit to the Buckeyes who is making things interesting. The California native recently visited USC, and a few predictions have come in for him to flip to the Trojans, although the Buckeyes may still be considered the favorite in this race. Losing Woodbey would be a bummer, given that he’s absolutely one of the best prospects in the country, but the Buckeyes have other elite defensive backs in this class, and from the 2017 class, so they wouldn’t be left without any options.

Tyreke Smith

One of the best players in the state of Ohio, Smith seemed to be trending to Penn State for months, but momentum appears to have recently shifted back to the Buckeyes. Given how many defensive ends are set to graduate or head to the NFL this year, and after the defection of five-star DE Brenton Cox, loading up on defensive ends will be a priority in this recruiting class. Smith, who is currently uncommitted, would be one of the best, and would help give the 2018 class more of a Buckeye-state flavor, as it’s currently quite heavy on national prospects.

Alex Williams

A three-star defensive end out of Pickerington, Williams is currently a West Virginia commit, but the Buckeyes are coming in hard, working for a flip. Williams, who also had offers from Virginia and Iowa State, would give Ohio State another local prospect with high upside, and more depth at a critical position of need.

Jackson Carman

This is another of the biggest names left on Ohio State’s board, and not just because he’s a huge dude. The five-star offensive lineman is the best player in the state of Ohio, but one that the Buckeyes have really had to work for, unlike most elite Buckeye State prospects. Carman is still favored to pick the Buckeyes via the Crystal Ball, but he’s also had some USC predictions come in lately.

Other big names, like four-star defensive tackle Tyler Friday and wideout (and current Nebraska commit) Cameron Brown may also end up Buckeyes, either this week, or later in the cycle.

It’s going to be a busy next few days, no matter what. But even if a few other names slip out of the proverbial boat, Ohio State looks primed to bring in yet another elite recruiting class.

Keep up with all the latest news from the Early Signing Period with our RSS feed.

From Eli Apple having a career day, to Michael Thomas passing 1,000 receiving yards, it was a good week for Buckeyes in the NFL.

As the postseason inches closer, former Ohio State players continued to impress and outdo themselves in Week 15 of the NFL. Specifically, second-year players had a hell of a week, and made lots of headlines, for more than just their on-field performances.

Michael Thomas hit a new career milestone, Eli Apple and Jeff Heuerman claimed new career-high stats, Ezekiel Elliott is more than ready for his return from suspension, and more. Plus, Ryan Shazier made his first public appearance, since his injury, at the Steelers-Patriots game Sunday afternoon, and was welcomed with thunderous applause.

Here’s how Buckeyes in the NFL fared in Week 15:

Thomas reaches another career benchmark

Second-year wideout Michael Thomas has been an instant success for the New Orleans Saints, and continues to set new personal, franchise and league bests.

.@Cantguardmike joins @OBJ_3 as the only players with 90+ catches in each of their first two seasons! pic.twitter.com/O0tILdzSNf

— NFL (@NFL) December 17, 2017

In Week 15, Thomas hauled in nine catches for 93 yards and a touchdown, good for his second 1,000-yard season. With two games still to play, the Buckeye receiver is well on his way to besting his 1,137-yard rookie season.

Bosa gets some tips from an NFL veteran

Following a Saturday night matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs, two of Ohio State coach Larry Johnson’s pupils met up, with the younger of the two, Joey Bosa, receiving some tips of the trade.

Tamba Hali of the Chiefs (and Penn State alum under Coach Johnson) took some time after the game to work on Bosa’s pass-rush technique. The Buckeye, in just his second year in the NFL, has 11.5 sacks so far in 2017 and claims 22 in his career. There aren’t many players out there who do things better than Bosa, but he was eager and all ears when a 12-year league vet took an interest in helping his game.

Apple active again for the Giants

After missing time to take care of his mom following brain surgery, Giants’ CB Eli Apple was then benched due to missed practices and a rumored attitude problem in the locker room. He was active in Week 15 for the first time in weeks, and had a career-high game finishing with seven solo tackles (nine total) against the Eagles.

It’s been a strange year, not just for the Buckeye CB, but for the New York Giants organization as a whole. From having one of the worst records in the NFL (2-12) to firing head coach Ben McAdoo a week after benching the longest tenured starter in franchise and league history, it’s been a bumpy road.

Following the Nov. 11 game against the 49ers, it was reported that Apple nearly walked out of the team facility after a position meeting that was particularly critical (read: honest) of the Buckeyes’ performance. Dealing with a struggling organization and a position group that has seen multiple conflicts, all in addition to the personal situation of caring for his mom, would be understandably overwhelming.

It wasn’t just his near walk-out that has kept Apple in the headlines. During last week’s NFC East matchup against the Cowboys — a game in which Apple was inactive — the Buckeye took to Twitter to show his former Ohio State teammate and now-Dallas rusher Rod Smith some love on a stellar performance.

Firing up more than just Giant fans, interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo remarked, “I told him I was disappointed. We’ll decide exactly what we do with it.”

Apple’s first performance back on the field should do enough to quell any questions people may have about his dedication and commitment to his craft — whether he’s all-in for the Giants is yet to be seen, but he’s at least making a case for a roster spot should the team make any changes in the offseason.

Elliott set to return next week

After finally serving his six-game suspension, Cowboys’ running back Ezekiel Elliott will be back in action for the team’s Week 16 game against the Seahawks. Following his suspension being upheld — and without additional options to appeal -- Elliott left the United State in an effort to refocus his energy and get away from the headlines.

(The move felt very Kayne West circa 2009 after the first Taylor Swift debacle. It worked for the rapper, who returned to a clean slate to build upon.)

It seems Elliott’s time away was well spent, with the running back looking to be in top shape ahead of his return. During the legal process, and the first half of the season, Elliott’s weight became a topic of discussion as the player known for rocking a crop top wasn’t leaving any gain to the imagination. In Ian Rapoport’s most recent update, you can see a picture of a shirt-less Zeke and some very chiseled abs.

#Cowboys RB Zeke Elliott returns from Cabo today after 6 weeks of intense training (pic included). A full-length documentary on his time away has been in the works, so you can see for yourself soon ... And that #Bengals coach Marvin Lewis update we promised, too. pic.twitter.com/uynGN4PGoB

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 17, 2017

Rapoport also noted that Zeke has been documenting his six weeks away from the league, and will release a full-length documentary about his journey.

Smith continues TD streak for the Cowboys

There is one guy who might not be so eager to see Zeke back at practice Monday morning, running back Rod Smith has seen a big increase in targets and carries in Elliott’s absence. This week in primetime against the Raiders, Smith claimed a short-yard trip to the endzone, marking his fourth game in a row with a rushing touchdown (for five total scores on the season).

Plays of the Week

Jeff Heuerman

The former Buckeye tight end had a career-high game coming off of just one catch on Thursday Night Football. Heuerman caught a big pass from Broncos (sometimes) QB Brock Osweiler for a 54-yard touchdown. It marked the longest catch and most yardage in a game in the TE’s two-year career, as well as only his second career TD.

Ryan Shazier

Before his back injury two weeks ago, Steelers’ LB Ryan Shazier was almost a weekly fixture among the Players of the Week, and even though he isn’t back on the field, he’s still making the list. With little news out of the Shazier camp since undergoing spine stabilization surgery last week, it was encouraging to see the Buckeye in a suite for the Steelers game. Even better, the incredible reaction from fans and teammates when they showed No. 50 on the big screen.

.@RyanShazier is here.

And this is what happened.#SHALIEVE pic.twitter.com/qnLvw7Foya

— Pittsburgh Steelers (@steelers) December 17, 2017

There still hasn’t been a definitive report as to the extent of his injury or recovery, or to the extent to which he can move his lower body, but attending a football game so soon after surgery is a good sign. Regardless of the prognosis, he seems to be in good spirits and surrounded by an excellent support system — from family, friends, and fans alike.

Other Notables

  • Despite finishing 2017 on IR, Colts OG Jack Mewhort will be looking for a new contract during the offseason. With his injury issues the past two years, a four-year or longer deal seems unlikely, but the Buckeye is being projected to land a 3-year deal with Indianapolis worth upward of $21 million.
  • It was a good week for some former Ohio State defenders, with several nearing career-high games, including Kurt Coleman (10 total tackles), Marshon Lattimore (5 total tackles) and Darron Lee (7 total tackles). Steelers’ DE Cameron Heyward also recorded a sack against Patriots’ QB Tom Brady in Week 15.

— Pro Football Focus (@PFF) December 17, 2017
  • Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins had a big game in a Week 15 win against the Giants with 9 total tackles and a blocked kick.

— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) December 17, 2017
  • Packers’ center Corey Linsley was snapping to a familiar face on Sunday, with Green Bay welcoming QB Aaron Rodgers back to the field after a broken collarbone sidelined him for a good portion of the season.
  • Despite nursing an injury, rookie Pat Elflein was still able to be a big contributor for the Vikings on Sunday in a win over the Bengals.

The Buckeyes are still trying to add pledges from a pair of standout pass rushers.

Every since the decommitment of five-star defensive end Brenton Cox, the Ohio State coaching staff has been on the recruiting trail trying secure pledges from outside pass rushers.

Hitting the road to watch a pair of big time targets play basketball, Urban Meyer and crew kicked off the weekend by watching four-star end Tyreke Smith and Cleveland Heights take the hardwood on Friday night.

24 hours after visiting with Smith, Urban Meyer, Larry Johnson, and Greg Schiano made the trek up to New Jersey to preach the Buckeye gospel to another four-star talent, Jayson Oweh.

Thank you @OSUCoachMeyer @OSUCoachSchiano and @R2X_Rushmen1 for coming to my game tonight. Enlightening talk!

— Jayson Oweh (@JaysonOweh) December 17, 2017

Smith was once thought of as a Penn State lean, but has many around the scene starting to believe that the Buckeyes are now in front for his services.

While Smith’s recruitment might be starting to lean in favor of OSU, Oweh still has scouts and reporters thinking there is a very good shot that he’ll end up in Happy Valley when it's all said and done.

Both Smith and Oweh will wait until after the early signing period to announce their college plans. Following in the footsteps of a long list of standout recruits, the pair will shut down their recruitment at the Under Armour All-American game on January 4, 2018.

Needing help on the edge, will the Buckeyes keep these talented defensive ends away from Penn State and others? We only have a few weeks left until we find out. Stick with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

Underclassmen check out OSU

While Urban Meyer, Larry Johnson, and others are still working their tail off to make sure the Ohio State class of 2018 finishes off strong, the Buckeyes are still keeping an eye out for top tier underclassmen.

Having the opportunity to show recruits around the Ohio State campus before the quiet period went into effect, the Buckeye staff played host to numerous prospects from the 2019 and 2020 classes.

Baldwin, Lake Travis to play for title

Recent Ohio State quarterback pledge Matthew Baldwin and his Lake Travis teammates will have a chance to win a Texas state championship after running away to a 28-14 win over previously-unbeaten Katy High on Saturday.

In the big win, Baldwin, a three-star prospect, connected on 22 of his 30 passing attempts for 225 yards through the air.

It wasn’t all smiles for Baldwin. Leading his squad down the field, the signal caller went down awkwardly after a quarterback keeper and left the ball game in the fourth quarter with a reported meniscus injury.

While it was definitely a scary situation, all signs point towards Baldwin suiting up for the Cavaliers and playing next week.

Trying to win the state championship for the second straight season, Lake Travis will take on class of 2019 Ohio State quarterback target Grant Tisdale and Allen High next Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

2018 TN OL Walker Culver (Virginia Tech Signee)

Whoa. Legit shocker there.

Hoping this is because we didn't accept a commitment from Walker at this time because we were feeling good about someone else...

I'm guessing the staff is unsure as to this point how many spots they'll have due to who's declaring and who's coming back so say they are set on 25 right now. We sit at 21 assuming Jones and Woodbury stay, with needs at DE and OT! I think that Brown, Carman and Smith are in. Leaving one spot, the need at DE on the roster is greater than OT! With no news on Rasheed Walker and then the Oweh comments circulating today about negative recruiting, maybe it's good news on his front (although no news on the crystal ball front). A higher need position DE with a projected higher projected ceiling in Oweh would essentially push Culver out of the class. But that's basically a stab in the dark at this point of maybe a domino effect of the final spot of the early signing period. We'll find out a lot of these answers soon though but it's fun guessing. Also the indecisiveness of Jones also may have pushed Culver out of this class because the staff was forced to fill a 2nd QB spot.
